In recent years, research in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) has had many important successes. Among the most significant of these has been the development of powerful new computer software known as the "expert systems". Expert system programs designed to provide expert-level consultative advice in mineral exploration (Duda et al, 1981), scientific (Feigenbaum, Buchanan and Lederburg, 1971) and medical (Shortliffe, 1976) problem solving are generally acknowledged to be among the forerunners of this research. As the decision makers virtually in all fields face a more complex and involved world within which to operate, the need for some decision support is also becoming urgent. Thus applications of expert systems continue to spread out reaching problems that, because of their dimensions or particular aspects, set more demand on the decision methodologies. To meet these new requirements, many activities which were performed in the past by the domain expert or engineer must become automated. Furthermore, previous research (Dawes and Corrigan, 1974; Dawes, 1979) has shown that automating an expert's decision rules often provide better decision than the expert does. For large systems it would be very useful (or even necessary) to have formal tools, allowing one for example, to automatically discover inconsistencies, contradictions or redundancies, or to identify the possibilities of wrong lines of reasoning in the decision process.

STRIPPED of its romantic possibilities, mining is a commercial business, carried on for the profit there is in it, and the business of the manager, in its ultimate analysis, is to make the profit as large as possible. The general manager of a mining company should keep himself personally familiar with all the details of its operations. If be fails to do so, chaos results, labor becomes inefficient, costs go up, and profits go down. Nowhere is this emphasized more than in Mexico. If the mining operations are extensive and complex, involving, besides the work of mining the ore, its transportation and treatment by various milling operations, and the marketing of the products, the business, to be carried on properly, must be divided into a number of main departments, which are subdivided into minor departments. Each main department should be under the immediate charge of a superintendent, or a foreman, and each minor department under a shift-boss. Organized in this way, and with all the principal centers of activity connected by telephone, the manager can keep in touch at all times with the details of every branch of the business, and be in a position to perform effectively the full duty of manager. The ?total cost of mining operations may be broadly divided under the heads of Labor, Supplies, and Marketing. Of these, it will be found, on averaging a number of cases, that the cost of labor will be about two-thirds of the total cost. The importance, therefore, of an efficient labor-department will be apparent. A major investigative' program was conducted on the development of an acceptable substitute organic binder for bentonite for the pelletizing of the Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol concentrate. The first phase of the program covered an evaluation of several organic binders in laboratory tire balling in order to identify the most promising potential organic binders. Based on the green ball quality obtained, Peridur C-10, Alchem 8C26 and peat moss were selected for full scale pot-grate testwork. The selected binders were tested with various pelletizing mixes (acid, dolomite, limestone and fully fluxed). The pot-grate test results showed that an acceptable pellet quality can be produced with the use of Peridur C-10.

"This paper presents a laboratory simulation of regrinding and resulting dust generation. An Automated Rotary Coal Cutting Simulator (ARCCS) was modified to conduct regrinding experiment. In order to estimate the effects of coal properties and operating parameters on regrinding and dust generation, an orthogonal fractional factorial experimental design was implemented in regrinding experiment. Marple personal cascade impactors, Series 290, were used to measure dust concentration during experiment. Three types of coal seams, namely, Waynesburg, Pittsburgh, and Lower Kittanning, were used to represent different coal properties. Experimental results and complete parametric analysis were presented.In a rotary cutting system, all the broken coal and part of the remaining coal from previous cutting cycles must be transported through part or entire circumference of the cutting drum. This transportation of already recovered coal through the cutting zone of rotary head makes it a rotary grinder. Some of the coal particles will be subjected to secondary fragmentation or regrinding in the process. The potential effect on dust generation by regrinding is significant because the cutting head utilizes kinetic energy to comminute recov¬ered coal material. The moving bits and bit blocks on the cutting head impact coal particles and transfer some of their kinetic energy to the particles. After obtaining kinetic energy, coal particles are free to impact one another and they also impact the coal seam or cutting head. During impact, high impact force and high internal stress concentration are created in the particles. Kinetic energy is transformed into strain energy. When stored strain energy exceeds allowable strain energy, the particles will break. A great amount of respirable dust will be generated due to impact failure. In reality, regrinding occurs at the same time as primary cutting. The particles to be ground are the result of primary cutting. Both primary cutting and regrinding produce dust. Therefore, it is impossible to separate regrinding from primary cutting. In order to study respirable dust generation by regrinding and analyze the influencing parameters, a laboratory approach was adopted. In this approach, it is possible to study the regrinding separating from primary cutting."

An experimental investigation of the hydraulic cuttability of coal from the Theiss Dampier Mitsui mine near Moura, Central Queen land illustrated the ability of established cutting equations to describe the behaviour of the coal during cutting. The experimental equipment developed for the work proved reliable. The results of the experimental programme are consistent with accumulated experience from overseas.

"Carbon which was used as heating and reducing agent in traditional iron and steel making process at present brought us large amounts of greenhouse gas harmful gases and dust seriously leading to the fog and haze condition. With the commercialization of hydrogen energy, the world energy structure will be changed greatly. Although many scholars have done a lot of researches and long-term exploration on hydrogen metallurgy, researches on the formation of metal iron phase in the process of hydrogen reduction of iron oxides in slag was rarely reported, which had important theoretical significance on the development of hydrogen smelting reduction process. Based on the thermodynamics and kinetics calculation, A laboratory experiment has been designed to research the iron phase formation during hydrogen reduction of iron oxides in the molten slag in this paper. SEM and EDS techniques were also used to observe and analyze the iron morphology. "Process automation as an engineering discipline is more than control systems since it includes industrial instrumentation, such as sensors, transmitters and actuators, as well as control and supervision systems, collection and transmission of data and real-time software applications to supervise and control the operation of plants or industrial processes. In the last several decades, accelerated technological development has provided a variety of software and hardware tools to aid development, maintenance and continuous improvement of automated systems. These developments however seldom reach their full potential in real plants. There are many factors to be considered, among them human capital specific training and the organization model. In this paper, a methodology for training engineers in advanced control and supervision of flotation plants is presented based on study of the application of these technologies in hybrid pilot plants. Since experimentation in real plants may present undesirable risks and costs, and simulation studies are usually limited to some unrealistic conditions, a laboratory where on-line measurements of the hydrodynamic behaviour of a pilot plant is mixed with phenomenological models has been created. In this form, an environment as close as possible to a real plant can be recreated. A flotation column and a circuit of three pneumatic cells are fully instrumented and connected to a PLC and PC network. In the control room, students learn applications of classical PID control in a DCS environment, advanced predictive control, on-line process operation diagnosis, fault analysis, virtual sensors and expert-fuzzy systems. Several undergraduate and graduate courses and theses are supported by this Process Control Laboratory infrastructure. Examples of these applications are discussed."

The results of over 900 coal strength tests done during the period 1993?1994 for the SIMRAC project COL021A were re-analysed with a view to find a method to delineate areas or seams that can be grouped together for analyses of coal strength and strength decay characteristics. It was confirmed that the strength of a coal specimen increases linearly with increasing diameter-to-length ratio and decreases exponentially with increasing size of specimen. However, by extrapolation of the data, it was shown that beyond a diameter of approximately 2 m, the size effect is insignificant. For larger specimens, the diameter-to-length ratio (referred to as the width-to-height ratio for full scale mine pillars) alone continues to influence the strength. The slope of the linear strength vs. diameter-to-length ratio relationship is independent of the size of the specimen and is not unique for coals from different mines. However, the intercept of that relationship is unique and is a function of specimen size. This offers a previously unknown method to distinguish between the coals from different mining areas and coal seams. The Bakal (South Ural, Russia) deposit of iron ore bearing iron carbonate (siderite) with the capacity of more than 1 billion tones belongs to the MMK. This ore cannot be fully processed via blast furnace technology because of high content of MgO. According to the investigations carried out in the USA and Japan in 1999-2004 the ITmk3 (Ironmaking Technology mark three) RHF technology is a breakthrough in Ironmaking. Four iron ore types (hematite, magnetite, high and low Al2O3/SiO2) were tested. Reduction, melting and slag removal can be achieved in just 10 min. The main objective of the investigation is to establish optimum operation conditions for the production of iron nuggets from iron carbonate bearing ore via the ITmk3 by means of the lab scale testing. Samples of iron ore and carbon reductant were chemically and physically analyzed. Green pellets were processed via a lab tube furnace to simulate RHF conditions. The nuggets and slag were chemically analyzed. This preliminary test work provides valuable information which may be used for large-scale testing in a commercially sized RHF.

Only 4 iron ore types (hematite, magnetite, high Al2O3/SiO2 and low Al2O3/SiO2), as well as 4 coal types with range of volatility, ash and fixed carbon were tested. Results were consistent with nugget characteristics confirming ITmk3’s flexibility with respect to raw material inputs. At the same time, no research in the field of nugget from iron carbonate bearing ore with high content of MgO has been done. Such kind of iron ore is restricted for charging into the blast furnace due to contamination of MgO. The reason for restriction is the limitation of load of MgO in the blast furnace. If a lot of MgO enters the blast furnace, slag becomes viscous. The viscous slag is obstacle for stable operation of the blast furnace."

A test to determine the amount of gravity recoverable gold (GRG) in an ore is described. Typical GRG results are given; an error analysis is detailed; possible uses are discussed. Of the 38 samples tested, the lowest GRG content was found to be 25% (most below 25 11m, or 600 mesh), and the highest 94% (most above 300 11m, or 50 mesh). The average GRG content was 63%, with a standard deviation of 19%. Error analysis shows the test to be reproducible within 5 to 10%, depending on the size distribution and grade of GRG, and the sample extraction protocol. When using the same primary sample, reproducibility improves, 2 to 5%, depending on the amount of gold coarser than 850 11m (20 mesh) and sample weight. The test has been applied to greenfield project and retrofit applications, to determine the suitability of gravity recovery. For existing circuits, it has been coupled with a model of gravity recovery for optimization studies.

Since dosage levels are generally not high, a standard laboratory float test may not be able to determine the effect of a specific chemical on the productivity of the flotation circuit. This paper presents a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5–100 g/t). Results indicate that this protocol helps to predict potential interference by a particular chemistry on the flotation circuit.RÉSUMÉ Certains produits chimiques ne servant pas à la flottation sont ajoutés directement et indirectement aux circuits de flottation afin de contrôler des problèmes tels que l’entartage et la poussière dans d’autres secteurs des opérations. Étant donné que les niveaux de dosage sont généralement faibles, un essai standard de flottation en laboratoire pourrait ne pas être en mesure de déterminer l’effet d’un produit chimique spécifique sur la productivité du circuit de flottation. Le présent article définit une procédure d’essai en laboratoire qui utilise des études cinétiques de flottation pour vérifier l’effet de doses normales à extrêmes de produits chimiques antitartre et anti-poussière (5 à 100 g/t). Hudbay and Ashland Water Technologies developed a laboratory testing protocol that uses kinetic float studies to test the effect of normal to extreme doses of antiscalant and dust chemistries (5 ppm to 500 ppm). Laboratory results indicate that this protocol helps to predict the potential interference that a particular chemistry will have on the flotation circuit.INTRODUCTIONFrom a chemical perspective, flotation is a very complex system involving more than the reagents used for flotation. Along with collectors, frothers, modifiers, suppressants and activators, there can be antiscalants for water treatment, dust suppressants used in the mining process, residual flocculants from recycled thickener overflows, grinding aids, and many other types of chemicals that are added upstream of a flotation circuit. Although these other chemicals are usually used at very low doses, it is important to know if they affect the flotation process detrimentally in the event of a spill or a build up from recycled water.Laboratory flotation testing of these chemicals characterizes their effects, but testing at expected doses in the float can mask the effects of the chemicals in the plant. Also, simple tests that do not measure the kinetics of flotation do not reveal the effects the other chemicals have on the flotation circuit. Thus, a new flotation protocol was needed to expose the full effects of chemical additives and to assist in choosing the chemical with the lowest potential for a negative effect.FLOTATION KINETICSMeasuring recovery kinetics in a laboratory flotation cell is a well-established procedure: analyzing concentrates taken in a timed sequence to determine the recovery rate of individual cells in a flotation circuit. A number of granitic rock specimens have been studied from the Stripa mine site in connection with a large-scale geomechanics research program. The purpose of the program was to evaluate and develop field and laboratory techniques for rock mass characterization and to determine design parameters for storage of nuclear waste. In this paper a minicomputer-based technique for studying dynamic rock properties in the laboratory is described, together with results from the tests. The specimens were tested under different uniaxial and saturation conditions. Specimens from a field-heated rock mass were also tested to determine if temperatures typical of those encountered with nuclear waste would introduce additional fracturing. Both Vp and Vs increased with stress for both saturated and dry specimens. Both Vp and Vs were higher for saturated specimens at all stress levels compared with the dry. The velocities increased linearly or near linearly with saturation. The test results on the previously heated samples indicate that attenuation is more sensitive to thermally-induced microfracturing than velocities. Analysis of the attenuation values with stress show that rock heated to 200°C is damaged, and that the damage is in form of low-aspect ratio fractures.

Respirable coal dust has been long recognized as a leading cause of multiple lung diseases. Efforts aimed at reducing dust concentration in underground mines have been made, but increases in coal workers’ pneumoconiosis incidence rates over the last 20 years among U.S. miners are concerning. Dust deposition and water spray suppression are two types of dust removal mechanisms in underground mining activities. In this study, laboratory tests were conducted to investigate the respirable dust decay characteristics during deposition and suppression processes in a confined dust chamber. Dust concentration and size distribution were monitored continuously throughout each 60-minute test. A number-basis particle size distribution was used for analysis to capture the changes of smaller size fractions within the investigated dust sample. This study found that around 62.1% of respirable dust particles were deposited at the end of the deposition test. In addition, the final deposition rate for very fine particles can be less than 20%. The results from the suppression test indicate that larger particles were removed quickly; however, sub-micron particles remain suspended through the 60- minute water spray, and particles under 0.5 µm can be considered irremovable dust under single-spray operation conditions. This study also observed the resuspension of a significant amount of sub-micron particles by the water spray. The results of this study provide basic information for improving dust control strategies and can be utilized to improve the water spray performance for reducing airborne dust levels.

As with most rheologically defined materials, rocks react differently in different environments to similar forces. Physical changes and deformations depend as much on the rate of change of stress as the magnitude of stress. In many instances the rate of change is more important. Under load, all real materials will flow if given time. If there is no time for flow, materials tend to react in a brittle manner. Particular characteristics are developed in rocks during their periods of formation and postformative geologic history. Whatever their mode of occurrence, rocks are a record of their formation and changes. Where analyses are possible, advantage should be taken of the natural inherent characteristics to help design economical functional structures. A number of techniques of measurement and analysis have been developed. The fracturing of rock by hydraulic pressure has been examined by many authorities but few within the scope of available published literature have used the actual rocks concerned in tests to examine directional characteristics or preferred strain propagation rates and directions. In a number of investigations of the properties of rocks for mine design purposes and stress analysis problems in which the writer has been associated, it has been demonstrated that there are definable preferred shear planes in most rocks. Preferred shear planes can be identified by a photoelastic method of analysis, and the information can be used to improve design of optimum drilling and breaking directions for mining purposes. Definable principal strain directions can be determined to facilitate design directions of optimum stability for permanent mine openings. In field fracturing operations the same directional characteristics as outlined above should be used to define preferred fracturing directions as in the laboratory from oriented samples. The sulphide samples showed a strong polarization effect, the magmtude of whIch depended directly on the conductivity of tlIe pore electrolyte.
