The Upper Silesian Coal Basin is located in the area of the Upper Silesian Syncline and belongs to one of the most complex tectonic units in Europe. It occupies 5,650 km2. In 2020, there were 20 hard coal mines operating in the area. Seismological research in this area consists of observation of precursors/symptoms of shock generation and understanding of their effects. Studies (Teisseyre R. 1972, Mutke G. & Stec K. 1997, Stec K. 2007, Dubiński J. & other 2010, Idziak A. 2010) of complex impacts of rock mass provided a background for determining the conditions for the formation of exploitation and regional seismic shocks. Issues related to tectonic and exploitation stresses, successive extraction of coal seams at higher depths, operation in the vicinity of fault zones, often complex geological and organic conditions result in the activation of a discontinuity surface due to stress caused by deformation of rock layers, which, as a result, causes the emergence of strong shocks above 107 J. The article was based on analyses of extraction value, high-energy shocks, both of mining and tectonic-mining (so-called regional shocks) origin, against the background of changing operating conditions, which, as a result, creates an image of periodically changing seismic activity and location of strong shocks. Observation results show that, with an increase in exploitation depth and declining extraction, the number of strong shocks caused by tectonic stress (107 - 109 J) and exploitation stress (≥105 J) has been steadily increasing over the last 25 years.

Published information discussing uranium mine radon daughter controls and related costs was examined and used to develop an estimated (projected) cost per ton for any level of control. Results show a clear power function increase of cost for conventional dilution ventilation as the annual exposure limit is lowered. Projections can be made using any assumed changes in consumer price index (CPI) and radon daughter working level months exposure limit. Bounds on the estimated costs are provided, and applicability of the final equation is discussed.

"An investigation of protocols for research performed from 1953 to 1988 on pneumoconioses (with emphasis on diseases related to coal and silica) was conducted in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust. In addition, interviews were conducted with prominent U.S. medical researchers, aerosol scientists and engineers in government, industry, and universities to determine dust sources, dust preparation methods, laboratory protocols, and determinant variables related to in vitro and in vivo research and assess the comparability of results.Since the original report on the protocol project, additional research regarding free radical existence in freshly produced dust particles and the shape and contamination of particles generated for research purposes has further heightened scientists' concerns. As indicated by current research, fresher dust particles and those with more angular shapes may have a different level of reactivity in biological systems than do older or more rounded particles. Therefore, research on dust preparation methods for biomedical studies was undertaken and will be outlined here.Results of protocol review and interviews are summarized. Research on size reduction methods and their particle characteristics plus some recommendations concerning dust preparation methods and reporting in biomedical publications are also presented. Recent evidence indicates that these recommendations may be of importance in comparing and interpreting research results."

THROUGH the use of pressure and production records, formation properties and bottom-hole sample data, the performance of an oil reservoir may be studied analytically to define and evaluate the natural forces acting on and within the reservoir. Use is made of material-balance methods and the equations for natural water encroachment to estimate reserves. Methods for calculation of pressures are given. A study of the Jones sand, Schuler field, Arkansas, has been made and is given here to illustrate the value of the methods discussed.

"In 1999, PFC measurements were carried out at Alcan smelters as part of a large measurement campaign led by the Canadian Aluminium Association. Side worked prebake (SWPB) and horizontal stud Söderberg (HSS) plants in Arvida were the selected sites. CF4 and C2F6 emissions were measured continuously in the exhaust duct and at the roof vents for a week. In parallel, voltages from four designated cells were recorded at a high scan rate. Results were analyzed and correlations between voltage, anode effect duration and PFC emissions were tested. Some fundamental anode effect mechanisms were proposed and validated with the observations. IntroductionFollowing the international agreement reached within the scope of the Kyoto protocol, voluntary partnerships have been established in many countries especially for the aluminum industry. It is well known that the PFCs that are periodically emitted during aluminum production are the major source of fluorocarbon emissions. The latter are part of the greenhouse gases. In the fall of 1999, Alcan announced that it will adopt, promote and regularly renew a long-term greenhouse gas management commitment at all of its facilities within the framework of the so-called TARGET program that was implemented during 2001. The program is intended to produce on-going reductions, which will be reported publicly on an annual basis.Improvements in the understanding of the mechanisms leading to PFC emissions will contribute to targeting the most appropriate reduction actions. PFC measurement campaigns have been driven toward this end. The first measurement campaign was conducted in 1993 in order to get a picture of the emissions and a base line. The last measurement campaign was conducted in 1999 and its main objective was to compare current emissions with those measured in 1993 and to confirm the accuracy of the predictive equations for the calculation of PFC emissions. This campaign has been conducted by the Canadian Aluminium Association and measurements were made in plants using different technologies. Results of this campaign have already been reported by Bouchard et al. (2001)."

Preventing pillar squeezes, massive pillar collapses, and bumps is critical to the safe and efficient recovery of coal during room-and-pillar retreat mining. To help prevent these problems, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) computer program. ARMPS calculates stability factors (SF) based on estimates of the loads applied to and the load-bearing capacities of, pillars during retreat mining operations. The program can model the significant features of most retreat mining layouts, including angled crosscuts, varied spacings between entries, barrier pillars between the active section and old (side) gobs, and slab cuts in the barriers on retreat. It also features a pillar strength formula that considers the greater strength of rectangular pillars. The program may be used to evaluate bleeder designs as well as active workings. A data base of 110 pillar retreat mining case histories has been collected across the United States to verify the program. It was found that satisfactory conditions were very rare when the ARMPS SF was less than 0.75. Conversely, very few unsatisfactory designs were found where the ARMPS SF was greater than 1. 5.

Many concepts for the commercial production of deep-seabed manganese nodules have been studied since the 1970s. However, the bearing capacity of the deep seabed is not strong because it is composed of fine particles with high moisture content. So it is impossible to carry manganese nodules in the collection system. Therefore, the validity of continuous mining by riser pipe from the seabed to the vessel is highly appreciated. A continuous mining system is composed of mining vessel, lifting pipe, buffer system, transport tube (flexible pipe), and self-propelled mining robot. A conceptual diagram of this system is shown in Fig. 1(a). Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) developed a deep-seabed self-propelled mining robot called "MineRo" to collect manganese nodules in 2012 (as shown in Fig. 1(b)). In 2013, real sea experiments at around 1380 m depth were carried out to evaluate the collecting and driving performance of MineRo. However, we found that the roller in MineRo did not work well at times. To elucidate the problem, we analyzed the rheological characteristics between the bushing and drive shaft under deep-water conditions.

Rib control is a critical component of underground coal mining operations, and comprehensive rib support design is essential for ensuring the safety of miners. However, there is currently no standardized approach for rib support design in the United States. To tackle this issue, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a standalone application, Design of Rib Support (DORS), for rib stability assessment and rib support design under development load. The rib support design in DORS starts with the rib support density, which is determined from the unsupported rib factor of safety (RibFOS). The relationship between rib support density and unsupported RibFOS was obtained from the collected field data. The objective of this research is to validate DORS rib support design by analyzing the extent to which the proposed design capability was utilized to support the coal ribs using numerical simulations. A series of numerical models with varying overburden depth and rib height were built and the ribs were supported with the DORS-recommended rib support design. The bolt load was analyzed under different conditions and the results show that bolt load varies with the overburden depth, the location of the bolt and bolt length. The load in the bolt(s) increases with the reduction in unsupported RibFOS. The bolt(s) start to yield when the unsupported RibFOS falls below a threshold value of 0.8 and secondary support is necessary.

INTRODUCTION The economic analysis (Chapter 3), the engineering studies (Chapter 10), the credit structure (and the consequential funding sources) - Chapter 11, and the overall feasibility structure for any venture are all directed to determining one major decision element: How much and how certain is the reward for taking these risks? Risk assessment is a surprisingly weak area of analysis and is usually addressed in a checklist fashion. It is much preferable to deal within a risk system so that the inevitable tradeoffs among risks are correctly made. DEFINITION The first step toward risk definition must be to ascertain all of the risks to which a project or a company is exposed; otherwise one will remain ignorant of the possibility of a financially crippling loss until it occurs. (Carter and Crockford, 1974). However, simply stating what "risk" is can lead to debate. For example, risk could be (adapted from Vaughan, 1982): -the chance of a loss - uncertainty of loss -possibility of loss - uncertainty -dispersion of actual from expected results - probability of an outcome different from the one expected - possibility of an occurrence of an undesirable contingency -a condition in which a possibility of a loss exists. For the minerals industry financier, the last definition is probably the most appropriate. However, from a mineral company's point of view the definition might well include the possibility of not achieving the expected financial return. RISK CLASSIFICATION Risk identification will be readily agreed as the all-important first step. There are five major "branches" of risk classification. These are: -Statistical -Modellers -Checklist -Project Financing -Insurance The Statistical set discovered probability theory and any risk discussion soon deteriorates into a mathematical jungle (Megill, 1977; Hartman, 1976; Reutlinger, 1970; and Pouliquen, 1970).Their use of terminology tells its own story: coin toss (binomial distribution), gamblers' ruin, delphi (oracle) techniques, monte-carlo simulations, random walks, etcetera. These techniques inadequately represent the judgements necessary in an increasingly complicated and interrelated world. The risk Modellers have turned to the computer to handle these inter-relationships but soon find barriers because of "simultaneity". Certainly the computer has its uses to conduct various analyses (marketed as "sensitivity" analyses) but very often one finds that this involves changing one or two variables at a time, all other things being equal. The runout of dry blocky rock avalanches produced by planar rockslides affecting a limestone formation with clayey interbeds is analysed by means of distinct element modelling. Numerical analyses are validated by means of the back analysis of a historical rockslide occurred in the investigated area and physical aspects of the phenomenon evidenced by modelling are discussed. Die Steinlawinen werden erzeugt von Rutschungen in einer Kalkstein-Formation mit tonhaltige Schichten betreffen. Die numerischen Berechnungen wurden anhand einer Simulation einer historischen Bergsturzen verifiziert, der sich auf den untersuchten Gebiet ereignete. Auf der Basis der erhaltenen Ergebnisse wurden die physikalischen Aspekte der untersuchten Steinlawinen analysiert.

Fragmentation in sublevel caving (SLC) is vitally important. Both gravity flow and any downstream processes are affected. Reasonably coarse fragmentation may lead to larger draw bodies (isolated extraction zones) and hence potentially higher primary ore recovery and depressed/delayed waste rock inflow from above. Fewer flow disturbances are expected by mitigating oversize. In addition, it requires less boulder handling and reduces wear and possible hang-up problems in orepasses. To assess the present-day functionality of large-scale SLC, a multiyear, comprehensive measurement program was initiated. It covers the main elements for SLC, namely blast function, fragmentation and gravity flow. The present paper focuses on fragmentation measurements. An image acquisition system was used to document the drawpoint and the load-haul-dump (LHD) bucket for each mucking cycle. At the beginning, four buckets (about 70 t total) were sieved to validate the results of both 2D and 3D image analysis techniques. The fundamental and specific problems are discussed herein. At the moment, fragmentation of the SLC rings is evaluated using a quick rating system and a 2D fragment delineation software. The results enable a description of fragmentation and its variation during mucking but also – combined with the gravity flow measurements – conclusions on the fragmentation for different parts of the SLC ring. Possible influences on flow disturbances and ore recovery/dilution are investigated. Drilling and blasting stages are considered factors that impact downstream processes significantly and over all the mining business value chain. Adequate control of these processes may represent energy savings in comminution processes. There has historically been a resistance to design change as this implies more drilling and implementation costs due to new technologies in explosives, which added value is difficult to quantify.

Block caving, unlike most other conventional forms of mining relies principally on the natural forces within the rock mass to fragment and transport the ore. Obviously, not every orebody can be satisfactorily mined by block caving. In the early stages of mine planning an attempt should be made to assess the benefits of the block caving system relative to others, and develop a reasonable mining concept that may be used to provide preliminary information to mine planners and financial specialists. It is the intention of this paper to outline some basic geotechnical parameters that are essential to: 1) Assessing the feasibility of block caving an orebody and 2) Providing semidetailed information relative to mine design based on drill hole and other data.

Limit Analysis Theorems has revealed to be a powerful tool for the development of numerical models aiming the determination of the load bearing capacity of structures reached by plastic collapse. This work presents a numerical formulation for the computation of strict upper bounds of the collapse loads of rigid-perfectly plastic mechanical systems, derived within the kinematical theorem framework. A key advance of this present method is that the problem is described only in terms of nodes and discontinuities connecting those nodes rather than element or bodies. The alternative approximation procedure to the traditional finite element method might involve discretization of a given body using a suitably large number of nodes laid out on a grid, with the failure mechanism comprising the most critical subset of potential discontinuities interconnecting these nodes. Potential discontinuities which interlink nodes laid out across the problem domain are permitted to crossover one another, giving a much wider search space than when such discontinuities are located only at the edges of finite elements of fixed topology. Highly efficient interior point method solvers can be employed when certain popular failure criteria are specified (e.g. Mohr-Coulomb). By adopting this processing approach it is possible to solve very large problems which normally exceed the memory capacities of a single computer. The developed numerical tool reveals to be robust and versatile, able to solve a wide range of 2D problems. Velocity singularities are automatically identified and visual interpretation of the output is straightforward. Several numerical examples including rock slope are studied by the new method, and the results are very close to those calculated by using analytical method and FEM.

Rockbolt failures at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant have been recorded since 1990 and are categorized in terms of mode of failure. The failures are evaluated in terms of physical location of installation within the mine, local excavation geometry and stratigraphy, proximity to other excavations or shafts, and excavation age. The database of failures has revealed discrete areas of the mine containing relatively large numbers of failures. The results of metallurgical analyses and standard rockbolt load testing have generally been in agreement with the in situ evaluations.

"A limestone mine in Ohio has had instability problems that have led to massive roof falls extending to the surface. This study focuses on the role that weak, moisture-sensitive floor has in the instability issues. Previous NIOSH research related to this subject did not include analysis for weak floor or weak bands and recommended that when such issues arise they should be investigated further using a more advanced analysis. Therefore, to further investigate the observed instability occurring on a large scale at the Ohio mine, FLAC3D numerical models were employed to demonstrate the effect that a weak floor has on roof and pillar stability. This case study will provide important information to limestone mine operators regarding the impact of weak floor causing the potential for roof collapse, pillar failure, and subsequent subsidence of the ground surface.IntroductionMassive roof falls extending to the surface at a limestone mine in Ohio have been studied collaboratively by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the mine owners. This paper provides a summary of the sequence of events leading to observed instability and presents a numerical modeling analysis that investigates the role a weak floor can have on roof and pillar stability.This study builds upon previous NIOSH research in underground limestone mines undertaken by way of a survey that analyzed performance of pillars in 34 different stone mines in the Eastern and Midwestern United States between 2005 and 2009 (Esterhuizen et al., 2011). This survey led to the development of underground stone mine pillar design guidelines based upon a “stability factor” for the pillar system. The factor is compared to operational experience to determine ranges of values that are typical of stable pillar systems. A software package titled Stone Mine Pillar Design (S-Pillar) was developed for easy application of these guidelines (Esterhuizen and Murphy, 2011).Weak floor in the present case study departs significantly from cases included in the previous NIOSH research, in that none of the 34 study mines had weak floor issues. Moreover, this case study is the first in which a weak floor has been monitored routinely as roof falls are occurring. A detailed report on the observations and measurements taken at the mine has been published (Murphy et al., 2015). The previous observations led to the conclusion that although there were weak bands in the pillar, the weak floor was the significant defect that led to the instability issues. The pillars were initially mined in 2004, approximately 10 years before the instability issues began to occur. The objective of this study is to use numerical models to analyze a variety of floor strengths and the impact of moisture content to find the critical point at which the floor becomes unstable, leading to long-term instability issues."

Despite more than half a century of experience with roof bolting, no design method has received wide acceptance. To begin to improve this situation, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a statistical study of roof bolt performance at a number of mines throughout the U.S. Case histories were collected from 37 mines with a variety of roof bolt types and patterns in a wide range of geologic environments. Performance was measured in terms of the number of roof falls that occurred per10,000 ft of drivage. The study found that roof falls are rare when the roof is strong and the stress is low, even with light roof bolting patterns. The focus of this paper is on the more difficult conditions, where the roof is weaker and/or the stress is higher. Analysis of the results led to guidelines that can be used to make preliminary estimates of the required bolt length, capacity, and pattern. The guidelines are based on the depth of cover (which correlates with stress) and the roof quality (measured by the Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR), and the intersection span. Another contribution is a formula for estimating the horizontal stress level in the eastern U.S. coalfields as a function of the depth of cover. The design guidelines are currently being implemented into a computer program called Analysis of Roof Bolt Systems (ARBS).

It is doubtful if anyone knows precisely how many U.S. coal miners have been killed by roof falls. In 1931, 51 miners were killed by falls or rock in every 10-day period (Paul, 1). Roley (2) indicated that from 1882 to 1945, over 3,700 men were killed by roof falls in Illinois alone. During this 63-year period, roof falls accounted for 47.6 percent of the coal mine accident fatalities. Similarly, Price and Nolting (3) reported that during the 10-year period beginning in 1937, roof falls claimed over 50 percent of the lives lost in West Virginia coal mines. Over 150 miners died under fallen rock in West Virginia alone, in each of those years. Certainly, the statistics have improved over the years. The Theodore Barry Report of 1971 (4) indicated that during, the previous 4 years, fewer than 100 miners per year lost their lives to roof falls--in the entire United States. The improvement is less remarkable when it is realized that the accident rate has declined only as the number of miners employed underground has declined. The TRW Report (4) pointed out that although the number of fatalities in underground coal mining (from all causes) had been cut in half from 1956 to 1965, the fatality rate per thousand miners had remained virtually constant. The decreased accident rate was due not to a reduction in hazards but to a reduction in work force. Roof falls still claim approximately 50 percent of the lives lost in underground coal mines. Considering the increased underground production of coal which must result from our energy crisis, the environmentalists' pressure against strip mining, and our inevitably diminishing supply of strippable coal, it is apparent that some means must be found to reduce the number of lives claimed by coal mine roof falls.

For underground openings, many factors can cause roof failure and thus roof falls. The most common factors related to Mother Nature are weak roof lithology, geological structures, and an abnormal in-situ stress field. Theoretically, any underground opening can be successfully supported under any geological and mining conditions if the opening width is limited and the roof supporting system is well designed. However, roof control cost must be taken into account. In practice, to minimize the roof control cost, different roof control plans have to be considered to take care of the uncertainty or variation in geological and mining conditions. For most underground mines, it is unsafe or economically unrealistic to use one fixed roof control plan for the entire mine. Therefore, local, abnormal geological and mining conditions must be identified and a site- or area-specific roof control plan must be employed. This study tries to identify the major factors that have significant impact on entry roof stability by analyzing the historical roof fall data at Rofomex mine. Finally, the appropriate roof control plans or roof bolting systems for different geological and mining conditions are recommended.
