Mica plate is broadly used in electric industry, production of man-made mica paper plate is in-creasing. The problem coming with is that large quantities of leftover materials unable to be re-cycled are produced during cutting and molding of mica plate productions. The leftover materials are always abandoned as crabs, which not only pollute the environment but also waste our resources. The study intends to find a new measure to decompose and to reuse the mica plate leftover materials so as to create a new production process of mica plate, which is clean and does not produce crabs.

Yunnan mineral is a kind of containing Ta-Nb rare earth deposit, the most potential economic valuable element in it is Sc, and raw mineral has 17.0 g/t Sc. Take the character of Sc into account, the key problem in producing scandium chloride molten salt by adaptive technology is how to man-ufacturer anhydrous scandium chloride molten salt. During the course above, the key problem is that preventing Scandium chloride from being hy-drolyzed into ScOCl. The ScOCl content of molten salt not only affect purifying scandium but al-so do harm to the production of Mg-Al alloy. In order to restrain the creation of ScOCl, add ammo-nium chloride into molten salt. As long as ScOCl is created, it would be chloridized. Thus, during the course of dehydrating anhydrous chloride molten salt this method prevents scandium from hydrolyzing. Accordingly, the key phase of this producing course is eliminate ammonium chloride and the surplus crystal water, and the most crucial of it is restrain scandium chloride from being hydrolyzed into ScOCl. This research analyzed the theory that ammonium chloride is trend to be hydrolyzed into ammo-nium chloride, and propose the research scheme of restraining this process from creating ScOCl. The new process of restraining the generating of ScOCl and dehydration for crystal water rare earth chloride is adopted: Inert gas temperature increases rapidly to a certain degree to eliminate ammonium chloride and crystal water. The experimental research were done such as : the temperature of eliminating ammonium chloride and crystal water, amount of ammonium chloride, time, temperature growth speed, influence of inert gas flow toward to scandium percent hydrolysis, whereby, we conclude the optimal process condition in this period: Temperature: 400°C, proportion of oxidized scandium and ammonium chloride is 1:1.5(Proportion of oxidized scandium and additional salt is 1:5.4), time is 120minute, temperature growth speed is 10?/min inert gas flow is 5L/min.

To obtain the rock type-I crack propagation process accurately, a novel fixture is used to make the prefabricated crack of rock propagation along the predetermined direction. In this study, the crack propagation process of rock is monitored with the digital image correlation method (DICM), and a mechanical model of crack directional propagation was established. The results show that the simple crack directional propagation device can effectively realise the stable propagation of type-I crack along the predetermined direction, the crack initiation angle is less than 10°, and the deviation between the peak strength of crack propagation calculated by a simplified mechanical model and the tensile strength of Brazilian splitting is 22.76 per cent and 7.53 per cent, respectively. According to the deformation field evolution law, crack propagation can be divided into three stages: microcrack development, main crack propagation, and main crack propagation. As for the rock type-I crack initiation and propagation mechanism, before reaching the peak strength, the prefabricated crack tip is subjected to maximum tensile stress; the elastic energy increases rapidly, and the dissipation energy increases slowly; after the peak strength, elastic energy exceeds its energy storage limit and released rapidly, and most of the input energy is converted into dissipation energy, which makes the crack propagation rapidly. The crack directional propagation device will be further optimised and improved, and it is expected to provide a new method for the study of crack propagation mechanism, rock failure precursor information and crack arrest principle, etc. It will also provide theoretical references for the optimisation of coal strata directional blasting, fracturing, fracture arrest, and other related technologies in geotechnical engineering.

The advances in computerised processors and digital microscopic imaging have enabled more studies that attempt to quantify textural information from rock images. However, a texture classification system designed for geometallurgy has always been challenging, as it combines general image analysis techniques and specific texture classifications in terms of the size, shape and orientation of mineral particles. In this paper, a novel texture analysis technique using grey level radial shell association (GLRSA) and spectral angle mapper (SAM) to discriminate between different geological images is outlined. The technique can be applied in routine analysis and characterisation of mineralogical and textural attributes which may correlate with variability in mineral processing behaviours. Using this texture analysis technique, a set of small texture reference images, a texturelet reference library, has been identified from a suite of drill core images. Rock types are classified according to the proportion of each texturelet type recognised. The library is site specific.CITATION:Nguyen, K, 2013. (communication to the Secretary *):-Mr. Chance's suggestions that the brown hematite ores of the Potsdam formation are due to the alteration in place of iron sulphide, and that their extension may reasonably be expected to contain valuable deposits of unaltered sulphide, are interesting; but the facts marshaled by him are too limited to justify more than the hope that they may serve as a commercial source of sulphur. It is true that these deposits have been the source of large amounts of iron-ore; and it. is common, as stated by him, for the mining operations to extend to a shallow depth only; but this is largely due to the fact that the surface-material represents an accumulation from the breaking down and collection of the ore which formerly reached a much higher level. With, increasing depth comes a decreasing thickness of valuable material. This is especially appreciated by a glance at Mr. Chance's drawings. This is the reason why so many disappointments have resulted when these ores have been followed to greater depths. Even if the ore is largely derived from oxidation in place, it is impossible to ignore the great number of concretionary forms, as well as those showing the evidence of secondary solution and deposition now taking place, such, for instance, as the part replacements of fragments of quartzite derived from the underlying beds. Concretionary form does not necessarily mean long transportation, and may be a variation of material in place; but commonly it is an evidence of collection, and tends to imply that more or less concentration has taken place. STRETCHING from New York southwestwardly to Georgia is a great range of hills and mountains consisting of pre-Palaeozic schists, slates, and gneissic and granitoid rocks, known locally by many different names; in Pennsylvaniaa as the South mountains, the Berkshire or Durham and Reading hills, and in Virginia and farther south as the Blue ridge. To the northwest of this range lies the " Great Valley," underlain by Lower Silurian limestones, and known as the Lehigh valley, Cumberland valley, Shenandoah valley, valley of Eastern Tennessee and Georgia and by other local names, but all these are parts of one valley, geologically and geographically continuous from New Jersey to Georgia. Lying upon and along the northern flank of this range of mountains, and dipping northwestwardly under the limestone of the valley, is the Potsdam formation (Primal or No. 1 of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey), which consists of sandstone or conglomerate overlain by slates. The latter are sometimes arenaceous and occasionally are replaced in part by sandstone. This formation varies from a few feet to several hundred feet in thickness. At the outcrop the slates are completely decomposed, oxidized or disintegrated, forming a belt of clay several hundred feet wide occupying the interval between the outcroppings of the sandstone and limestone. This clay-belt includes a more or less continuous series of iron-ore (brown hematite) deposits, which have been, and still are, extensively worked. The belt is more or less continuously mineralized with iron throughout its length, and hundreds of large deposits of ore have been developed and worked, producing many millions of tons of ore.

Centennial Coal operates the Springvale and Angus Place longwall mining operations that extract coal beneath the Newnes Plateau in the Western Coalfields of New South Wales. Springvale and Angus Place mines have a history of difficult geotechnical conditions, where mining operations are conducted with a thick coal roof interbedded with numerous claystone units and relatively high levels of vertical and horizontal stress. The combination of a relatively high stress regime and weak laminated roof has led to numerous roof failures throughout the mine’s life.Following underground roadway development, the mine roadways can experience high levels of roof movement that can lead to roof falls. Two-point wire extensometers (known as ‘telltales’) are extensively used for roadway condition monitoring. Along with extensive other geological and geotechnical data, monitoring data is used to prepare geotechnical hazard plans that are then used in all areas of mine planning to allow for safe and efficient operation of the mine.This paper presents a case study of the use of a new software tool that allows time-scaled visualisation of monitoring data in the context of longwall and development face positions and installed strata support. It can be used in the identification of geotechnical risk factors and their interaction with the mining process to allow a more robust geotechnical hazard process. This paper describes the development and methodology of the Institute of Makers of Explosives’ Safety Analysis for Risk (IMESAFR), a risk analysis software program for commercial explosives operations. IME is a nonprofit safety and security association devoted to the safe and secure manufacture, transportation, storage, and use or disposal of commercial explosives in the US and Canada since 1913. The software methodology’s basis is the U.S. Department of Defense Risk Based Explosives Safety Criteria Team’s Safety Assessment for Explosives Risk (SAFER) software. A diverse group of industry and government experts contributed to modifications to SAFER that reflect commercial operations. IMESAFR is intended to supplement the American Table of Distances (ATD) and offer standardized methods of managing risk from a wide variety of commercial explosives operations where the ATD does not apply. The modifications made to SAFER primarily involved the addition of commercial activities and potential explosives sites (PES). A review of commercial explosives accidents and operations over the last 20 years served as the basis for establishing probability of event values. An industry survey of commercial PES types in the U.S. and Canada was conducted to identify and address critical differences in commercial structures as compared to the military structures in SAFER. Mine waste rock is unavoidable in the recovery of ore by open pit mining methods. Effective management of waste rock movement covers the removal and placement of the waste rock, generally in a surface dump in the most cost-effective way while satisfying the long-term environmental expectations. Since the 1960s, there has been significant research carried out into planning of ore movement from open pit mines such that the overall net present value (NPV) of the project can be maximised. Currently, several software packages are available to achieve this task as a common practice within the mining industry. However, planning of mine waste rock movement is still achieved manually, as the available software does not consider optimal waste rock movement and dump design. This paper describes a tool to optimise waste rock placement, which minimises the haulage cost while creating environmentally friendly waste rock dumps through selective placement and encapsulation of the reactive waste rock in the dump. The embedded methodology in this tool has been developed based on the mixed integer programming (MIP) modelling technique to optimise the waste rock movement. The methodology provides an easily-manipulated and fully-automatic tool for professionals to complete waste rock dump scheduling in four main steps: data input, model construction, model computation and solution retrieval. "A practical new test has been developed for SAG hardness determination. Using two kilogram samples of minus one inch diamond drill core or crushed muck samples, the Starkey SAG Test has been shown to give accurate predictive information which directly relates to on-stream SAG mill performance. Typical results and test criteria are discussed in the paperAchievements to date include:• Identification of hardness profiles and the location of hard and soft zones in a large ore body.• Accurate prediction of the hardness of a bulk sample by using an adjacent diamond drill hole.• Derivation of a plotted curve relating pilot plant power to laboratory relative hardness.• Demonstration that for every test done to date, the Starkey SAG Test produced a product size distribution identical to that produced in a pilot plant or full scale plant SAG operation.This test can now be used for blast hardness monitoring and short term control of mine production in existing plants and for identifying the proper locations for bulk samples in new projects. In addition, new SAG mill design can now be rationalized in a low cost way to eliminate unforeseen production shortfalls.IntroductionThis paper is presented to introduce the Starkey SAG Test, a practical new laboratory tool for measuring the relative hardness of small ore samples in a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) environment. Asian steel mills are demanding iron ore with specific chemical, mineralogical, metallurgical and environmental properties to warrant that the ore is of the greatest quality. As a result, a toolkit of analytical techniques becomes important. Hyperspectral analyses of iron ore cores and chips using a HyLogging™ system are now routinely undertaken by BHP Billiton Iron Ore in Western Australia for banded iron formation-hosted iron ores and channel iron deposits to better characterise their iron ores. Objective information can now be expanded by adding new sensors. The current HyLogging™ system provides point analysis reflectance spectra and a red–green–blue high-resolution image, while recent developments, such as hyperspectral imaging using the Corescan system, now provide full spectral image and surface topography. The addition of Raman spectroscopy provides the ability to detect and quantify quartz and magnetite (or maghemite) and cross validate hyperspectral information on hematite and goethite and aluminium substitution in the iron oxides. Micro-X-ray fluorescence mapping also adds chemical information appropriate for cross validation with the aforementioned methods. "This paper describes a new type of bell-less top installed on two relined blast furnaces at Tianjin Iron Works and another new-built at Echeng Steel Works in China. A compact installation was presented for existing furnace top innovation with the least reformation of existing top structure. A water cooling and sealing gearbox used for driving the chute discards completely the traditional idea about necessity of continuous supply of cooling gas for the gearbox. A multiring spreader and its dozens of selectable charging patterns enables an operator to achieve optimal burden distribution easily under the condition of a minimum investment of control equipment. Some useful conclusions have been made through a small-size model and a full-scale model tests. The excellent characteristics and the superiority of the new top have been fully proved at both works.IntroductionIt is known that there are some advantages with the bell-less top of a blast furnace: suitable for furnace to operate at high top pressure, capable of realizing optimal burden distribution, less investment and maintenance costs, etc. But why do most of blast furnaces in the world still remain using conventional bell top. One of the concerns is that current bell-less tops still have some shortcomings:1) The height of a current bell-less top might be lower than three or four-bell top or two-bell plus valve seal top, but still much higher than an ordinary two-bell top.2) The gearbox for driving the rotating chute is positioned onto the lip of the furnace. It is subject to attack by crude hot bf gas. Continuously pumping cooling gas (pressurized nitrogen or clean bf gas) into the gearbox is indispensable to withstand such a harsh working environment. Therefore, a plant furnished with blower8 and its ancillaries has to be built, It involves a large sum of investment and much expense in its annual running costs.3) Although the current bell-less charging device as a means of controlling burden distribution possesses a wide range of freedom, it is difficult to realize optimal burden distribution. There are some large blast furnaces realized better burden distribution, but sophisticated control means is indispensable so that the investment of control means is much higher."

The dry coal preparation technology based on air dense medium fluidized bed is an innovative dry highly efficient technology of coal by introducing fluidization technology into beneficiation.. A modularized 40-60 tones/hr system (KZX-40) with an air dense medium fluidized bed separator was established. The construction cost of the modularized system is only 1/3 of the traditional wet heavy-medium coal preparation plant construction cost with the same capacity, and the consumption of dense medium can be reduced by 50%-60%. The footprint and volume of the system are decreased by 75% and by 89.81%, respectively. These facts show the improved intensity, efficiency and economy of modularized coal preparation technique. The modularized KZX-40 system can be used to separated 50-6 mm coal over a separation density range of 1.3-2.2g/cm3 depending on the variation of <1mm fine coal content. The separation efficiency of the system was investigated at low and high separation densities by float-sink experiments. The partition curve of the products at low separation density shows that the separation density (d) is 1.33g/cm3, and the probable error (E) value is 0.05g/cm3. Using 50-6mm coal with an ash content of 55.35% as feedstock, at a high separation density of 1.61g/cm3, the clean coal with an ash content of 14.67% and the tailing with an ash content of 71.26% are produced with an E value of 0.06g/cm3. It is clear that the modularized KZX-40 system is suitable for separating 50-6mm coal effectively. During the dry coal preparation process, the dust is removed by the bag collector and recycled back into the separator. So the system has the advantages to work without environmental pollution and water. The modularized system greatly reduces the construction and operating costs and decreases the area and volume required, compared with wet dense medium system. New operating conditions and process parameters are often necessary in today&apos;s industrial practice of non-ferrous smelting and converting in order to accommodate various new chemical compositions of mineral charges and environmental requirements or to conceive new and more efficient industrial technologies. An important parameter in non-ferrous smelting and converting is the liquidus surface of multicomponent slags. This surface is affected by multiple factors such as temperature, gaseous potentials, the content of each component in the slag, etc., and cannot be quantified by the existing ternary liquidus diagrams. In this work a new type of representation of the liquidus surface of multi component systems has been presented by means of a thermodynamic model. This representation waives the need of the multidimensional representation of multi component systems and yields practical two-dimensional diagrams, which can be easily used in the industrial practice.

This paper describes the research and development programme to develop a prototype underground auger mining system aimed at developing and demonstrating an underground auger mining system able to provide economic access to thinner (<1.8 m) coal reserves of South Africa. Data concerning the performance of modern coal augers under South African coal mining conditions were gained from a proven surface auger which operated across a range of coal types. These data were analysed and considered in conjunction with historical information regarding previous attempts at building underground augers dating back to the 1950s. Drawing on these data a prototype underground auger mining system, the BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger, was designed and manufactured by the BryDet Development Corporation in collaboration with Eskom and Cutting Edge Technology Pty Ltd with support from Anglo Coal and the Ingwe Coal Corporation Ltd. The prototype BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger commenced trials in March 2000 at the Matla Mine near Witbank in South Africa. The initial trials were undertaken in an open cut to facilitate the commissioning and training associated with a prototype mining machine. A total of 30 holes was augered in the box cut before the machine moved underground. The prototype BUA 600 first achieved the target penetration depth of 80 m in its third hole. The prototype BUA 600 is a new underground mining system which has passed early testing with ?flying colours? and could provide access to extensive underground coal reserves unmineable by conventional mining techniques both in South Africa and elsewhere around the world.

The Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME) and A-P-T Research, Inc. (APT) have developed a quantitative risk assessment tool called IMESAFR (IME Safety Analysis for Risk) for managing risk from various activities undertaken in the commercial explosives industry. The first version was completed in 2006 and Version 2.0 of the software was completed in 2012, incorporating several major new features. The platform is now based on a Geographic Information System (GIS), providing a bird’s-eye-view to help visualize facility layouts and risk. Spatial data on potential explosion sites and exposed sites can now be automatically transferred from the images to ease users’ data input. Use of GIS data provides the ability to check facility compliance with quantity-distance (QD) standards such as the American Table of Distances (used by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, ATF), the NATO standard (used by Natural Resources Canada and other nations), or a user-defined table. Research conducted and knowledge gained over the last 10 years enabled changes in the algorithms and models that provide greater fidelity and reduce conservatism. Expert users can change global settings to more accurately match actual site conditions and the program runs using either Imperial (English) or SI (metric) units of measure. These changes and other new features are discussed and demonstrated.

X-ray computed tomography (CT) images of rock specimens often contain artifacts which must be corrected before scientific analyses are performed. This paper presents a new workflow of automated image processing to utilize poor-quality X-ray CT scan images. The workflow runs on the open-source image analysis software and efficiently separates desired features from low-contrast scanned images. The new workflow is a two-step technique using contrast enhancement and automated feature segmentation to generate noise-free binary images. The results of binary images using the proposed workflow and using a conventional thresholding technique are analyzed to show the quality of the proposed method. The paper also presents a workflow of estimating the structural geometries of features in two and three dimensions. The results of the structural feature analyses and computational time were compared between the open-source (ImageJ) and commercial image analysis software (Bruker Computed Tomography Analyzer). The commercial software was more computationally efficient, but the task-specific macros in open-source software enabled the user-desired automation in image processing and data extraction of desired structural features of comparable quality.
