"A colorimetric technique, originally developed for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC) based on the Komarowsky reaction, has been extended to a wide range of common mineral flotation frothers. The procedure, which is briefly described, is shown suited to on-site determination in a series of industrial campaigns. Some frother observations are described, including: concentration evolution down a bank, distribution between pulp and froth phases, and a mass balance around a circuit. Minute amounts of frother in recycle water were also measured.The contribution of frother and alcohol by-products in the analysis was generally additive for plants using aliphatic alcohol type frothers and decoupled for systems using glycols. Typically, U250C (polyglycol) was used at higher concentration (>10 ppm) than MIBC (aliphatic alcohol) (<10 ppm) or F-150 (polyglycol) (<3ppm).The ability to monitor frother easily will help interpret gas dispersion behaviour and should permit further optimization of flotation cell hydrodynamics and chemistry. The capability to directly measure should help optimize the type, amount and location of frother addition, and to assess frother recycled with reclaim process water.INTRODUCTIONOwing to the lack of analytical methods, the task of determining frother concentration in plant flotation circuits is not routinely performed. Industrial sites seldom outsource analyses that are both costly and inconvenient, due to the necessity of shipping freeze-dried samples to remote testing facilities. A more direct colorimetric method has recently been demonstrated for the laboratory characterization of common industrial frothers (Gélinas and Finch, 2004). The approach, based on the Komarowsky reaction (Penniman et al., 1936; Coles et al., 1942; Duke, 1947), was previously described by Parkhomovski et al. (1976) for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC). The reaction involves the interaction of the OH group of a higher alcohol, concentrated sulphuric acid, and salicylaldehyde, to yield coloured solutions with intensities that can be analyzed by UV-visible spectrophotometry."

"This paper describes the design of a molybdenite flotation circuit using FLEET technology applied to kinetics data produced from laboratory flotation testing and distributed across the blocks of a mine plan using a geostatistical approach. The geostatistics assigned the statistical error that arises from having a limited amount of sample testing data to the kinetics estimates of each block of ore in the mine plan. The final design then included a quantification of risk based on the accuracy of the block flotation kinetics and model fitting. The design made reference to the extensive technical reports describing earlier metallurgical test work including some pilot plant work over thirty years ago.The testing involved conducting MinnovEX Flotation Tests (MFT) to determine the rougher flotation kinetics at the specified reagent conditions and rougher-cleaner tests to determine the change in kinetics resulting from regrind. These flotation kinetics were used within FLEET simulations to create a full-scale flowsheet and plant design including recommended equipment sizes and the forecast of operating results. Measurement of detailed flotation kinetics for a wide range of samples allowed the effect of size of grind and efficiency of classification (i.e. width of size distribution) to be predicted for the whole ore body.INTRODUCTIONAdanac Moly Corp. proposed to develop a 20,000 ton per day mill to produce high quality molybdenite concentrate from its Ruby Creek resource in north-western British Columbia. It is a relatively clean low grade porphyry-monzonite occurrence containing minimal quantities of other sulphides such as chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite and galena. Molybdenite occurs mainly as coarse flakes with lesser amounts of finer sized values. An optimum plant design was required to can achieve the predicted operating results, at a known level of risk, while treating the variability inherent in the ore body."

People are migrating because of economic, social, natural and political reasons. These natural and humane factors effects the distribution of populations. The need for tunnels has grown in order to provide a comfortable life and reduce losses such as waste of time, labor, energy, efficiency and so on. It is inevitable to carry out excavations in rock tunnels (shears, platforms, lines, connections, wastewater, distribution, energy, transportation etc.), that will be built by excavating with conventional method, by controlled blasting regarding with constrains. In this study of applied explosives engineering the blasting applications are evaluated, which were carried out for research and development purposes at Yenisahra Station tunnels in Kartal Formation which was built with the aim of solving İstanbul's transportation problem within the framework of the Kadıköy-Kartal Metro Project. Twenty-four shots were made by using explosives in 60 blastholes that were drilled in the tunnel faces, which were located between and outside of two different faults. Six microphones were used to measure the air shock and eight geophones were used to measure the parameter values of the vibrations (particle velocity, frequency, displacement, acceleration, amplitude, wavelength etc.), which were placed at predetermined points of the surface, occurred during the blasting applications. Data from the geophone and microphones were recorded on six seismographs. The coordinates and the distances between the shot points and the measurement stations are determined by an electronic theodolite. The total number of seismic records, recorded in seismographs, is 118. The number of records of vibrations that crossed the faults is 42 and the number of records of vibrations that did not cross the fault is 76. The particle velocity, frequency, amplitude, acceleration, displacement and wavelength were measured in transverse, longitudinal and vertical directions. The total number of measurements is 354. By evaluating all seismic records, the effect of delay intervals, faults and scaled distances on the particle velocity, frequency, amplitude, displacement, acceleration, wavelength and air shock were investigated. When the vibrations formed during the Research & Development (R&D) blasts were examined, it was determined that the parameter values of vibrations that crossed the faults are lower than the ones that did not cross the faults. In addition, when the particle velocity values of all vibrations are examined according to the present circumstances, it is determined that the waves did not cross the fault in all delay intervals are superposed in all directions, and that the least superposing occurred in the 50 ms delay range.

A matrix analysis of the differences between the camps and communities associated with the Britannia Mine is used to develop an analytical tool. The tool is intended to assist the mining industry as it embraces the many facets of sustainable development. A case study is used to support the identification of key factors that may predict the sustainability of a new mine town. Sustainable communities, like Britannia Beach, are discussed in the context of three pillars of sustainability: value of mining products to society; creating wealth; and, environmental integrity. A sustainable mine town may be viewed as a socio-economic asset as well as an asset to the mining industry.

Abandoned coal mines cause subsidence and structural damages. Shallow abandoned mines induce the most severe and harmful damages. In addition, they produce time-dependent subsidence which is difficult to predict. Backfilling of underground cavities with waste materials have been used to prevent the time-dependent subsidence or to mitigate its effect. However, this procedure is expensive. A new drill and blast technique has recently been proposed to prevent surface damage from time¬dependent subsidence over abandoned mines. It utilizes the principle that blasting in the caved rock and roof in the vicinity of a cavity will dilate the ground and create a self-supporting effect owing to increase in the volume. Physical modeling has demonstrated that artificial dilation of caved rock using the drill & blast technique creates positive effects due to the following sequence of events: the dilated rock creates a supporting effect for the suspended rock strata and reduces its span which decelerates 3.4 times the process of caving. The roof span is reduced by the next caved layer, which causes the hole boundaries to incline to each other. This effect converts the process of caving from a developing mode to a reduction mode. Finally, the sinkhole zone assumes a triangular shape with a negative angle of draw 64-700 in contrast to a rectangular shape of the chimney zone for natural caving. Vertical dimension of the triangular zone is 3.87 times of the room height. Final surface subsidence decreases at least 2.09 times; displacement 1.31 times, slope 2 27 times; curvature 3.42 times, horizontal strain 1 21 times in comparison to natural caving of the ground over an abandoned mine.

This paper is directed at interested parties outside the Beach Sand Industry : the scope is quite broad. The geomorphology described is a successful working hypothesis which guided the author during prospecting and pegging campaigns : the author is not an expert in this field. The test data used in the text, for illustrative purposes, is original and may constitute a contribution to the state of the art. The operation- al and design philosophy embodied in the text is personal and describes the author&apos;s methods : all practising exponents would differ in some degree amongst themselves on these subjects. In this paper, no criticism of any existing operation or brand of equipment is intended and names are used to maintain a real contact with the subject matter. The author believes that the operational and design techniques evolved in the Beach Sand Industry under continual duress, have a wider application in the mining industry. This glimpse of the Industry is intended to enhance the respect for the present and past members. Space does not permit individual acknowledgements.

In the iron ore industry significant emphasis is placed throughout the mining process on meeting chemical composition specifications for the export of fine ores, however, little has been published on the implications of ore chemical composition for iron ore sinter and pellet product quality. The ore bulk composition, together with the nature of the minerals in the fine ore both play a critical role in determining the type of high temperature bonding phases that form during sintering and pelletising. This paper uses the experimental determination of phase relations in model sinter and pellet systems such as Fe2O3-CaO-SiO2 (FCS) and Fe2O3-Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 (FACS) to examine the links between iron ore chemical composition and the temperatures used during sintering and pellet firing. The phase relations help to establish the critical thermal and compositional parameters that control the bonding phase chemistry which in turn influences the physical characteristics of the sinter or pellet matrix. Underground mine designs typically try to avoid extraction beneath streams and rivers of any significant size, especially when the overburden rock thickness between the stream bed and the mine is thin. Potential issues with mining beneath streams include excessive groundwater inflow to the mine; weak ground (roof, floor, and pillar) conditions; horizontal stress effects; as well as stream loss and other potential adverse environmental effects. However, there are times when crossing beneath a stream or river is necessary to move into a new area of mineral reserve without creating additional mine access points from the ground surface. Often, stream crossings are completed without thorough assessment, potentially resulting in increased costs, decreased safety, and, in some cases, failure to advance the mine. Selection of the most favorable location(s) to cross the stream must account for numerous factors and the associated assessment often requires a multidisciplinary approach. Stream crossing investigations often require geological, hydrogeological, geotechnical, and geophysical expertise. Phases of stream crossing investigations include desktop evaluation of maps and aerial photography, stream bed observations, drilling, detailed rock core logging, downhole geophysical surveying, hydraulic conductivity testing (packer testing), geotechnical laboratory testing, assessment, and reporting. The deliverables from a stream crossing assessment typically include geological, geotechnical, and hydrogeological characterization of potential stream crossing locations; classification of favorable and unfavorable crossing locations; recommendations for entry design and pillar sizing; and recommendations for if, and how, to conduct pre-grouting activities. Examples of technical aspects of data collection and assessment are provided based on decades of industry experience conducting stream crossing assessments in various underground mining scenarios.

Severe dynamic multiple seam interactions can occur when active mine workings are subsided by underlying mining activity. The most dramatic events are usually caused by longwall mining or pillar recovery beneath open, overlying entries. But pillars in abandoned workings can also fail and cause subsidence and damage an overlying mine. This paper describes a case history in which an apparent ?pillar squeeze? in the abandoned workings of a lower seam was initiated during retreat mining in an upper seam. The event subsequently extended more than 1,500 ft and ultimately closed the upper seam mine. Analysis indicated that the pillars in the lower mine were adequately sized for the lower seam mining and were not affected by the initial development above them. When retreat mining in the upper seam had progressed several hundred feet, however, the pillars located directly beneath the pillar line were overloaded, and an extensive squeeze initiated in the underlying workings. The squeeze, in turn, subsided the overlying workings, causing widespread rib falls and roof instability. Previous examples of dynamic multiple seam interactions resulting from delayed subsidence of underlying workings have been reported in the literature. This is, apparently, the first recorded incident in which pillar recovery in an active mine triggered pillar failure in an underlying mine, which then triggered a dynamic interaction that impacted the active overlying seam.

"VIBRONICS, INC. instrumented and monitored a residential structure for response to,blasting at aMidwestern surface coal operation. The residence was owned by the mining company and was extremely close to the operation. Blasting was conducted within 120 feet (36.5 meters) of the test structure. Up to seventeen (17), four (4)-channel seismographs were used during the monitoring period. The basement walls and floor were monitored. VIBRONICS, INC. also monitored a brick chimney in the basement and attic. Structural responses were then compared to outside vibration measurements taken in the soil near the foundation."

"It has long been recognized that mining workers subjected to high levels of hand-transmitted vibration may suffer from vibration-related complaints. Prolonged exposure to whole-body vibration may also result in adverse effects. In this study, the effects of vibration on mining workers are examined. Previous work documenting the occurrence of vibration-related disease is reviewed. From this work, it is apparent that operators of hand-held pneumatic rock drills are exposed to a significant risk of developing vibration disease. Vibration levels recorded on the rock drills now in use are presented and shown to exceed levels recommended by a proposed ISO standard.IntroductionThe possible harmful effects of exposure to excessive vibration levels have long been recognized, particularly among operators of hand-held tools. Numerous cases have been reported of a vasospastic disorder commonly known as vibration white finger disease (VWFD), which was a term coined by the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council in Scotland in 1970(1 ), Those suffering with the disorder have frequent vasospastic attacks in which the fingers, hand and, in advanced cases, the lower arm turn white and numb, usually after a cold stimulus. Advanced stages of VWFD have been reported in which the skin becomes ulcerated and gangrenousm. The incidence of the disease has been particularly serious in the forest industry due to the extensive use of chain saws. However, in recent years, the introduction of antivibration saws has resulted in a significant reduction in the occurrence of the disease.In a recent report for the Canadian Department of Supply and Services - Energy, Mines and Resources, Hutton & Brubaker considered the effects of vibration on workers in the mining industry. In this report, the physiological and medical effects of vibration were considered, relevant vibration standards were discussed, previous vibration measurements were documented and field measurements carried out. In the present paper, the results recorded in this study will be summarized, together with results that have been previously published relating to vibration levels existing in the mining industry."

INTRODUCTION The Transbay-Caltrain Downtown Extension (DTX) Project involves the construction of an approximately 1.5-mile rail line that will extend Caltrain commuter service and the future California High Speed Rail system into downtown San Francisco. The underground rail extension will be constructed by mined tunnel and cut-and-cover methods. Tunneling challenges include difficult ground conditions, low rock cover, the presence of historic buildings along the alignment, and the large tunnel span, ranging from approximately 50 to 65 feet. Three mined tunnel construction methods were evaluated: the Stacked Drift Method, the New Austrian Tunneling Method/Sequential Excavation Method (NATM/SEM), and Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). This paper describes the challenges presented within the mined tunnel section, and summarizes the evaluation of tunneling methods that led to the selection of NATM/SEM. PROJECT OVERVIEW The existing Transbay Terminal opened in downtown San Francisco in 1939. This facility is antiquated, and does not meet current building seismic safety standards or the transportation needs of the Bay Area. For these reasons, San Francisco voters approved Proposition H in 1999, which proposed to construct a new or rebuilt regional transit center at the site of the existing terminal and extend Caltrain commuter rail ser-vice to the new transit center. The new transit center is the hub of the Transbay Transit Center (TTC) Program, which will greatly enhance regional transit service by providing connectivity for six Bay Area transit providers at one facility. Optimising the throughput of a mining network comprising all equipment from shovels to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills is a complicated task, yet the potential benefits can be significant. Key modelling challenges stem from the sheer number of possible routes which material can travel, different equipment operating under different constraints, and the rate of SAG mills being calculated through a nonlinear function of the blended materials’ rock attributes. Nevertheless, this is an ideal onapplication area of mathematical programming, a branch of operations research. This paper describes an application of mixed integer linear programming (MILP) to optimise the mining equipment network of one of the world’s largest copper mines.The model takes as input a year-long monthly mine schedule of shovels in different pits, pushbacks, sequences and faces which produce material to be moved through a network of crushers, conveyors, silos, distributors, stockpiles and SAG mills, ultimately outputting a daily operational plan for all equipment that maximises the throughput of the network. All operational constraints and business rules are considered, including three quality attributes of copper ore. Comparing model results with actual data shows an improvement of 4.47% in network throughput tonnage. Additionally, although the model is solved using a free, open-source solver, optimal solutions are still achieved within a practical timeframe.

Equilibrium relation between B2O3 slag, RExOy-B2O3 (RE = rare earths) slag and Fe-C alloy formed by melting treatment of neodymium magnet and B2O3 was investigated. When neodymium magnet was melted together with B2O3 and Fe-C alloy in carbon crucible, 3 liquid phases of B2O3 slag, RExOy-B2O3 slag and molten Fe-C alloy formed and clearly separated by the difference of the specific gravities. In the case that excess amount of Cu was also introduced in that system, molten Cu phase additionally formed. Almost all amount of RE were concentrated in RExOy-B2O3 slag. The concentration of RE in RExOy-B2O3 slag increased with the decrease of the melting temperature. While chromium, phosphorous, nickel, cobalt, and copper were concentrated in molten Fe-C alloy, silicon and aluminum were distributed in B2O3 slag and RE2O3-B2O3 slag.

A system of steel sheeting and multiple levels of high capacity double corrosion protected soil anchors were used to restrain a major slope failure that occurred at the base of the Watchung Mountains mid-way through construction of a 650,000 SF retail center along Route 22 in Watchung, New Jersey. The implementation of a design-build earth retaining structure was necessary to stabilize and repair the disturbed mountainside in a timely fashion to permit completion of the retail center on a fast track schedule. The tied back steel sheetpile wall was approximately 2,000 feet long and varied in height from 12 to 25 feet. The hillside extended approximately 350 feet above and 600 feet beyond the wall with the main failure scarp extending 50 feet above and 90 feet beyond. The wall was constructed in a top-down manner and required the installation of 475 anchors to resist loads of up to 70 kips/ft produced by the creeping hillside and groundwater flows from both a series of springs and steady state seepage through an inclined zone of fine sand. Incorporation of a unique tie point connection eliminated the need for a waler, facilitating and simplifying modifications to anchor locations based on anchor load test results and conditions encountered during construction. Post grouting also proved to be an essential element in the successful construction. This paper presents the design and the construction methods used to restrain the significant earth lateral loads produced by a slope failure using steel sheeting tied back with high capacity soil anchors with anchor loads distributed to the sheeting through a unique tie point connection on a fast track schedule. Installation techniques, testing programs, and construction quality control are also discussed.

Foreword Following the explosion in the Hillcrest mine, which occurred in the evening of Sunday, September 19th, 1926, and in which two men lost their lives, the writer was invited by the Hon. J.E. Brownlee, Premier of Alberta, to conduct an investigation into the causes of the disaster, and to make such recommendations as seemed advisable with a view to minimizing as far as possible the chance of future explosions in this and similar Alberta coal mines. Accordingly, the mine was visited, and extensive investigations were made underground on October 21st, 2.2.nd, and 25th, in company with Mr. John T. Stirling, Chief Inspector of Mines for Alberta, Mr. Moses Johnson, District Inspector for the Crowsnest Pass District, Mr. J as. A. Richards, Inspector of Mines, Edmonton, and also Mr. Thomas Davies, manager, and other officials of the Hillcrest mine. Hearings of the coroner&apos;s inquest were also attended on October 20th and 23rd, when testimony regarding the explosion was given by various witnesses. The following paper summarizes my general observations in tracing the place of origin of the explosion, and my efforts to determine the cause of ignition. Certain recommendations arc also made, and the writer invites discussion on these and the other matters dealt with in the paper.

Thank you Dr Barcza, President of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, for inviting me to share our experiences in Australia as regards the competency movement and my Association?s experience in assisting engineers become managers. This is my second visit to South Africa, and I am struck by the similarities between our countries. This extends to the professional issues associated with engineering and competencies in particular. I propose to outline two exciting stories today. ? Development of competency standards for professional engineers in Australia. ? Development of a management programme which has assisted professional engineers regain positions of leadership in Australian industry and government. First of all I would like to outline the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers, Australia(APESMA).
