ALTHOUGH nickel was in use in alloys long before the Christian era, the metal was not discovered until 1751, when Cronstedt recognized it in niccolite from Sweden. The Chinese apparently used a nickel alloy, known as "pahfong" thousands of years ago and Persian coins dating farther back than 200 B.C. consist of a copper-nickel alloy similar to some of those now in use in coins. The pure metal was first prepared about 1775 and the metal was refined for commercial purposes some years later. The nickel industry did not attain much prominence until the ores in New Caledonia were discovered. Exports of ore from that country began in 1875 and since that date there has been an ever-increasing world output of nickel and a great expansion in the uses of the metal except during short periods of commercial and industrial depression. Previous to 1875, for a number of years, Norway was the chief producer, although the metal was mined also in Sweden, Finland, Italy, Germany, Austria, France, China, the United States and other countries. With the dis-covery of nickel deposits in the Sudbury district, Ontario, a new factor was introduced into the nickel industry and Sudbury has since become the overwhelmingly dominant feature in the world's nickel markets. Although nickel was first discovered in Canada as early as 1848 near the north shore of Lake Huron and nickel-copper sulfides were found in 1856 by surveyors working close to the present location of the important mine at Creighton, in the Sudbury field, it was not until 188.3 that any importance was attached to this field. In that year copper sulfide attracted attention where the main line of the Canadian Pacific railroad was being projected across Canada to the Pacific coast. Mining began near this discovery in 1889 but in the meantime operations had begun in 1886 in other parts of the field and by 1890 about 100,000 tons of ore had been raised. In the Sudbury field, as in Norway and at the old Lancaster Gap mine in Pennsylvania, the ore was first mined for its copper content and difficulty in the refining of the copper led to the discovery of the important proportions of nickel in the ore. "Data will be produced from two uranium feasibility studies that were conducted in 2008, both involving uranium recovery from leached slurry by resin-in-pulp (RIP) with strong base resins. Excellent metallurgical results were produced in RIP pilot plants in both studies, and the loaded resins were eluted with strong sulphuric acid and recycled to RIP in an integrated process. Resin losses by either abrasion or mechanical breakage were immeasurably low.Metallurgical results from these two campaigns will be presented, along with an economic analysis of RIP versus the alternative process of CCD or filtration and solvent extraction.INTRODUCTIONThe recovery of uranium directly from pulp with strong base resins in RIP contactors was practiced commercially in the USA in the 1960s, but the process never established itself as a viable alternative to solid/liquid separation and solvent extraction. This was due mainly to the necessity to do a sand-slime separation partially resulting from the unavailability of coarse resin beads, inadequacies in the design of the RIP contactors and screens to separate resin from pulp, as well as problems with the strength and durability of resins in agitated pulps.There have been significant advances in the last 30 years in each of these areas. All the commercial resin manufacturers are now producing very tough, durable, strong base resins, and are manufacturing them in a large bead size that is better suited to RIP applications. In addition, with the emergence and wide spread implementation of the carbon in pulp process in the gold industry in the 1980s, many innovative techniques for preparing leached slurries and separating carbon from pulp have become firmly established. These techniques have proven to be equally applicable to resin separation from pulps in RIP contactors."

"The Aqqaluk deposit is a lead-zinc ore body that lies immediately north of the Main Pit at Teck Cominco’s Red Dog Mine in Alaska. It is scheduled to begin production in 2011 or 2012. A project team was formed in late 2004 to plan and implement an ore characterisation and metallurgical evaluation on the Aqqaluk ore. The main objective of this program was to facilitate the transition from Main Pit to Aqqaluk ore in the Red Dog concentrator. The program will develop a detailed, spatially-oriented characterisation of the Aqqaluk deposit attributes including lithology, ore geochemistry, bulk mineralogy, ore texture, as well as evaluating the metallurgical characteristics of ore hardness, process water geochemistry, bench-scale floatability and mineral liberation in ground feed, concentrate and tails. Developing correlations between the metallurgical response and the ore characterisation data is key to the emerging science of geometallurgy. This on-going program is a technical due diligence study that aims to reduce the risk associated with processing a new ore and to provide predictive information for mining and stockpile preparation.The test work to date has focused on characterising the five ore zones currently identified in the Aqqaluk deposit, namely: Siliceous (sub-divided to High Zn:Fe and Low Zn:Fe), Vein, Median Plate and Baritic ores. It identified a number of challenges associated with surface oxidation, or weathering, of the core samples and outlined a program for future sample collection and storage. Metallurgical testing evaluated ore hardness by a variety of methods. Preliminary floatability studies have been completed and some initial links have been established between the ore characteristics and the flotation response. Soluble mineral weathering products, the relative abundance of pyrite and marcasite and the iron content in the sphalerite grains have all shown a correlation to mineral recovery.As new core is received, both the ore characterisation and the metallurgical testing will be continued with a view to strengthen the existing correlations and develop new links."

"The danger of autoclaves lies in the high temperatures and pressures that exist in autoclave vessels. The usage of autoclaves will continue to expand in the mining industry because of their efficiency and environmental friendliness. But increasing attention must be paid to ensuring their safety. Safety Instrumented Systems (SISs) play a critical role in autoclave plants by detecting potentially dangerous conditions, taking the plant to a safe state, informing the operator about the plant status and the cause of the trip and expediting safe plant restart. The SIS should ideally be fully integrated with but functionally independent of the Basic Process Control System (BPCS) and provide redundant logic solvers to increase safety and plant availability while reducing spurious trips.INTRODUCTIONWikipedia defines an autoclave as follows: “An autoclave is a pressurized device invented by Charles Chamberland in 1879 designed to heat aqueous solutions above their boiling point to process materials.” A typical autoclave system used in the metallurgical industry includes, besides the autoclave vessel, heat recovery (heater) vessels, high pressure positive displacement (HPPD) feed pumps, vessel lining systems, specialized internals and components, agitators, pressure letdown or flash vessels, isolation and control valves, over 2,000 I/O points and related instrumentation, and emergency relief systems."

Coal mine bursts have represented a major hazard for U.S. mining operations for more than 90 years. During this time, many prevention controls have been developed and tested. This paper reviews 11 prevention control techniques. Although coal mine bursts are not common events in most underground coal mines, their occurrence almost always requires a change in mining practice. Over the many years of dealing with these hazards, specialized requirements for layouts and novel extraction sequences have been developed on a site specific basis. The keys to mitigating risks are to properly assess the coal burst hazards and to possess the knowledge and skills to prevent or remediate their occurrence.

WHEN the writer resided at Zeehan, qn the West Coast of Tasmania, some years ago, he took a keen interest in the geology of the district and availed himself of the opportunity to investigate occurrences, of the varied minerals in which the field abounds. The following notes were compiled as a result of one of his periodical visits to the outlying mining districts, when an examination was made of the bindsay Reward tin mining property, which has an area of 140 acres. This is most easily reached from Renison Bell, the centre of the North Dundas tin-fields, on the Emu Bay railway, 'about' eight miles north east of Zeehan. Thence a pack track some 14 -miles long connects with the mine, crossing the Piemah River by a fine suspension bridge.The mine itself is situated on the main south leading spot of the Parson's Hood Range, at an altitude of some 1600 ft. above sea level. The Parson's Hood Range is composed of granite and is an extension of the rugged Meredith Range. A remarkable feature is the uniform topography of the surrounding country when viewed from the peaks. Except where dissected by the rivers and creeks, the surface is practically level and, indeed, affords a striking illustration of an ancient uplifted peneplain.The mine has been opened by means of trenches and adits, and the ore-body proved to extend for a length of 30 chains, with an average width of about 100 ft. Its general trend is west-north-west, and its dip, which is steep, corresponds to that of the country-rocks. These latter, which are of sedimentary origin and generally regarded as of pre-Silurian age, have been tilted at high angles, consequent, no doubt, on the crustal movements produced by the intrusion of the huge granitic masses which now form the high ranges in the vicinity.It may be here remarked that it is not Within the scope of this paper to deal with the sequence of events leading to the geological structure...

Weightings and water inflows into longwall workings often occur together, giving rise to discussions on their relative genesis. Case histories are introduced which indicate that most water inflows are associated with heavy weightings. Resultant large releases of energy can lead to extensive vertical fractures, which can drain water from aquifers or other sources, such as separation accumulations, onto the face. Effectively control of water inflows in these cases depends on face support and weighting control.

"The South American mining community leads the world in recognition and adoption of the latest grinding mill relining technologies. Clearly this region has recognised the benefits of improved relining performance.Six of the seven RUSSELL TWIN 8 Mill Relining Systems, ordered to date, are either operating or being manufactured for South American mine sites.This paradigm shift, towards very short relining times, aims at displacing mill relining activities from the critical path of concentrator maintenance shutdown schedules.The first uses of the RUSSELL TWIN 8 Mill Relining System have seen some of the highest SAG mill new liner placement rates ever observed by RME, as would be expected with two, independent Machines working simultaneously in the one mill.The liner-replacement-rate, averaged over the whole reline, is good (27% improvement over single Machine System in the same mill) but short of full potential. This modest result can be attributed to reline crews unfamiliarity with RUSSELL TWIN 8 System operation.This paper compares a sample of conventional (single machine) RME Mill Relining System performance data with one ‘double head’ mill liner handler by others. Early performance of Escondida’s new RUSSELL TWIN 8 System performance is then compared with recent single Machine data from Escondida, immediately prior to RUSSELL TWIN 8 commissioning. RME and Escondida look to constantly improving RUSSELL TWIN 8 System performance as full operational familiarity is achieved.Also, the preparation of this paper revealed a need to develop a global industry standard for mill relining data collection. A web based platform, to develop and then distribute standardised data collection templates, is discussed in Annexure 1."

"Northern Minerals Limited’s (ASX: NTU) flagship project is the Browns Range Rare Earth Project (the Project) located in Western Australia, consisting of a number of deposits with high value, heavy rare earth elements, in particular yttrium, terbium, and dysprosium. The deposits are dominated by xenotime mineralisation, which occurs within hydrothermal silicified and hematitic breccias. The Company delivered an initial JORC compliant resource estimate for the Project at the end of 2012 of 10,500 t of contained total rare earth oxides (TREO), which was increased to 28,084t of contained TREO in October 2013 and further enlarged to 47,997 t of contained TREO in February 2014. Concurrent with the growth of the Project resource base, significant progress has been made in developing the metallurgical process for the beneficiation and extraction of rare earth elements (REE’s) from the xenotime mineralisation. Development of the beneficiation circuit evaluated several process options and selected whole-ore flotation and magnetic separation, followed by flotation (hybrid circuit) as the two preferred flowsheets to pilot, following encouraging results on the bench of 83% and 86% recovery to a 20% TREO mineral concentrate respectively. Several downstream hydrometallurgical extraction flowsheets were evaluated. However, the following two preferred process flowsheets were ultimately selected for further detailed investigation during the prefeasibility study: 1. Sulphation bake, water leach, purification, oxalate precipitation, and/or calcination to produce a mixed RE oxide; 2. Sulphation bake, water leach, phosphate precipitation, caustic conversion, HCl leach, and oxalate precipitation to produce a mixed RE oxalate. Excellent heavy rare earth oxide (HREO) extractions (~ 90%) from beneficiation concentrates were achieved on the bench for both circuits, however flowsheet 1 was ultimately selected as the preferred flowsheet to pilot due to lower capital and operating cost. A mixed rare earth oxalate (42% TREO) or oxide (92% TREO) can be produced with low levels of Th and U of 3 ppm and 6 ppm respectively."

The Heavy Media Separation plant operated at Lidsdale siding, eight miles from Lithgow, by the N.S.W. Mining Co. is a product of the Western Machinery Company, of D.S.A.This mill, designed to use finely ground magnetite as the heavy medium, was prefabricated in America and shipped to Australia for erection.First operated early in December, 1951 it has worked on a two-shift basis since. Designed for an input rate of 330 tons per hour, this mill is capable of washing 4 in. x /u in. coal down to its inherent ash by removing all heavy material, including high-ash coal.The principle is quite simple. A stream of raw coal is fed into the separatory vessel which contains a liquid medium, the density of which is adjusted to produce the desired split between coal and refuse. In this bath the lightest coal floats, and all material heavier than the specific gravity of the medium sinks, and is removed separately. Such a system is,. ideally suited to Western coal, as there is no definite splitting point between coal and refuse. Inherent ash of the coal fed to the plant ranges from 8 to 25%, the corresponding density range being from 1.28 up to 1.8.Generally speaking, the higher the density the higher the ash content of the coal.The density in the separatory vessel (hereafter called the cone) can be quickly and easily adjusted throughout the above range to any desired value. Analyses of scheelite from all the known scheelite fields in the South Island of New Zealand have shown that the scheelites are essentially molybdenum-free. The scheelites are almost stoichiometric CaWO4, except for some strontium replacing the calcium, with a maximum of 0·92 per cent SrO. Variation in strontium content appears to be' related to the metamorphic grade of the enclosing rocks.

"A new device has been developed to directly measure the bubble loading of particle-bubble aggregates in industrial flotation machines, both mechanical flotation cells as well as flotation column cells. The bubble loading of aggregates allows for in-depth analysis of the operating performance of a flotation machine in terms of both pulp/collection zone and froth zone performance. This paper presents the methodology along with an example showing the excellent reproducibility of the device and an analysis of different operating conditions of the device itself.The device has been used to investigate the froth selectivity of attached particles. Simultaneous measurements were made using a different froth recovery measurement technique in the same flotation cell. A comparison of these techniques shows that in this case, particles are selectively detached from bubbles at or near the pulp-froth interface.INTRODUCTIONA flotation cell can be considered to operate in two distinct phases or zones; namely the pulp or collection phase and the froth phase. The pulp zone is responsible for the formation of hydrophobic particle-bubble aggregates, whilst the froth phase is responsible for the separation of these aggregates from surrounding suspended hydrophobic and hydrophilic particles. Thus, the froth phase is the grade determining phase in flotation. A measurement of the bubble load (the mass of particles attached to air bubbles in units of mass/volume) will enable the analysis of the performance of both the collection zone at creating bubble-particle aggregates and also the froth zone at separating these aggregates from surrounding pulp.A measure of froth zone performance that has been used extensively in flotation research is the Froth Recovery, Rf, of a particular system. Froth recovery is defined as the mass of particles collected in the concentrate launder by true flotation as a fraction of the mass of particles entering the froth phase. The measurement of bubble load allows for this term to be calculated easily, rather than having to go through the laborious task of, for example, changing froth depths to determine this performance criterion (Contini et al., 1988; Vera et al., 1999b; Feteris et al., 1987)."

Tremendous improvements in mining technology have been witnessed during the past 100 years. For example, before 1860 all blastholes were drilled manually and blasting was done with low-energy black-powder. During the 1860's both the pneumatic rock drill and high-energy dynamite were introduced, ushering in an era of mining mechanization that has steadily progressed since that time. Today, with the rapid implementation of the latest advances in communication science, mining technology is moving into a new era that goes beyond mechanization as such. Transistors, transducers, scanners, telemetry, and the like, all terms largely derived from the new communication sciences, add up to what is popularly know as automation-the communication of machine with machine. Automation is now playing an important role in selected parts of the mining process, such as hoisting, hydraulic roof supports, and underground surface locomotive haulage and belt conveyor systems. But this year marked the first attempt to auto-mate the total mining process with the commencement of production at the British National Coal Boards Bevercotes mine. If this full-scale experiment proves successful, it could lead towards other fully automated mines in both Britain and other parts of the world. This decade, there-fore, could be considered the one that provided the foundation for the mines of the future.

"Summary: Fibroblast proliferation and enhancement of collagen synthesis are key steps in the development and progression of pulmonary fibrosis. The current investigation presents a fibroblast proliferation assay to detect the release of competence factors from pneumocytes. The specific objective of this study was to define cell culture conditions for fibroblasts that would allow selective detection of competence factors in test media. The results indicate the following: (a) fibroblasts should be cultured for 2 days in plasma-free medium rather than 2% plasma to assure complete quiescence; (b) 1% plasma was optimum for producing progression activity for the bioassay of a competence factor, while 0.5% plasma did not produce sufficient progression activity (yielding false negatives) and 2% plasma often contained significant competence activity (yielding false positives); and (c) fresh plasma should be used since the progression activity of plasma was adversely affected by freezing and thawing. Under these conditions, this bioassay can be employed with either rat or human lung fibroblasts to detect competence factors such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), at levels as low as 25 ng/ml.Fibrotic lung disease, as a consequence of occupational exposure to silica dust. is characterized by the development of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions in the lung and the progressive loss of pulmonary diffusion capacity. Proliferation of pulmonary fibroblasts and enhanced synthesis of collagen by these pneumocytes have been shown to be key steps in the development of chronic silicosis ( 1 ). The regulation of lung fibroblast proliferation by cytokines released from alveolar macrophages may be an important pathogenetic mechanism in the development of the fibrotic process (2). Some cytokines stimulate fibroblast proliferation by activating specific phases of the cell cycle (3,4). In particular, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) promotes fibroblast proliferation by inducing the movement of quiescent (G0 ) cells into the G1 phase of the cell cycle (5). Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) and transforming growth factor-P (TGF-P). on the other hand, regulate the rate of transition of fibroblasts from G 1 into the S phase (5,6). These two classes of cytokines have been termed competence and progression factors, respectively. One approach used to examine the release of cytokines from macrophages is the fibroblast proliferation assay in which quiescent fibroblasts are exposed to culture supematants from macrophages exposed to various stimuli. In most of these assays, the supernatant contains fetal calf serum (FCS), which provides the competence factor(s) necessary to facilitate the proliferation of fibroblasts (7-9). Recently, a fibroblast proliferation assay using platelet-poor .plasma [lacking competence factor(s)] as a substitute for FCS bas been described (I 0, 11 ). In this assay, the release of a competence-inducing PDGF-like growth factor from rat and human macrophages can be distinguished from other cytokines that act as progression factors."

SO much has been written recently about the use of silver to replace scarce metals that certain facts about silver and its uses should be of interest. Figures for the production and use of silver, taken from the Handy & Harman annual reviews of the silver market, are given in Table 1. It will be seen that the rate of production has remained fairly constant and has been affected in recent years by the production of base metals, of which silver is a by-product. In each of the years 1937, 1938, and 1939, the U.S. Government acquisitions alone exceeded the entire world production, the difference, of course, being made up by imports of previously accumulated stocks. In 1940 and 1941 the U. S. Government acquisitions plus the United States and Canadian uses in the arts and industries exceeded the Western Hemisphere production. The U.S. Government pays a premium price for silver newly mined in the United States, at present 71.11c. compared with the price of 35'/8c. for foreign silver, with the result that the current U. S. production is not used commercially for the arts and industries. At the time this is written (June 1942) there is much uncertainty as to the future effect of this situation.

"Tulawaka Mine is a joint venture between Pangea Minerals Limited 70% (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation) and Northern Mining 30%. Tulawaka Mine is located in North West of Tanzania in the Lake Victoria Goldfields. Tulawaka Mine is scheduled to process 360,000 tonnes per year at an average 11.5 g/t head grade over a 4 year mine life.The Tulawaka Process Plant uses single stage crushing, single stage SAG milling, gravity, intensive leach of gravity concentrates, CIL, Zadra desorption and cyanide detoxification to process the ore. Gold recovery exceeds (or is expected to) 95%.The Process Plant was designed and constructed under the supervision of Ausenco Engineering of Australia. Site works commenced in January 2004, Process Plant construction commenced in July 2004 and the first ore was presented to the Process Plant 26th February 2005. The first gold was poured on 15th March 2005. All construction contractors were demobilized from site 7th April 2005. Major achievements have been 3.4 million hrs LTI free during construction and operation to date, training of the Tanzanian workforce at Bulyanhulu Mine prior to commissioning, a succession plan to replace expatriate personnel with Tanzanian staff and significant over performance of the Process Plant against design.INTRODUCTIONTulawaka Mine is situated approximately 160 km south west of Mwanza in the western Lake Victoria Goldfields District of north western Tanzania. The property is held under a joint venture between Pangea Goldfields Inc (70%), a wholly owned subsidiary of Barrick Gold Corporation, and Explorations Minieres Du Nord Ltée (30%). A location map showing the position of the operation in Tanzania is shown in Figure 1.Mine site staff at Tulawaka comprises a combination of Tanzanian and Expatriate personnel. All Pangea personnel live on site and commute to their place of residence for their R&R on a 9 weeks on 4 weeks off roster."

"Metix has introduced a three-piece ’deep-cooled’ copper slag tapblock into a six in-line copper matte settling electric furnace. The tapblock was designed without any internal refractory; it relies purely on the development and maintenance of a freeze lining on its hot face and within the tapping channel to protect the copper and promote the integrity of the surrounding endwall refractory lining. In addition, the geometry of the tapblock further supports the sidewall refractories, reduces the impact of funnelling and, therefore, the need for premature rebuilding of the furnace endwall, and facilitates easy removal and replacement of the wear components even under ’hot’ furnace conditions. Eighteen thermocouples embedded in the copper components ensure full resolution of the copper condition, enabling plant personnel to identify wear rates, estimate freeze lining thickness and stability, and schedule replacement of spares and wear components well in advance.At the time of writing the tapblock had been in operation for 6 months with approximately 350 000 t of slag having been tapped through it. Every indication is that the design will limit the need for premature relining of the furnace endwall due to rapid deterioration of the tapblock and its surrounding refractories. IntroductionNonferrous furnaces rely heavily on the maximization of refractory campaign life to increase profitability and reduce planned downtime. In large electric copper slag-cleaning furnaces utilizing insulating linings, campaign lives of six or more years are realistic if consideration is given to each aspect that can degrade the refractory lining during the campaign. An area that is particularly vulnerable is the slag tap-hole and the local surrounding refractory. To avoid premature relining of the furnace walls, every effort should be made to consider not only the tap-hole design itself, but also the selection of the sidewall refractory material and its construction immediately adjacent to the tap-hole, and furthermore the interplay between the tapblock and this adjacent refractory. A holistic approach to the design that considers these interdependent features in the slag tapping area can reduce the incidence of accelerated refractory wear (‘funnelling’), support the surrounding refractories to prevent their collapse, introduce easily replaceable wear components that can be exchanged with the furnace still ‘hot’, and encourage and maintain a stable freeze lining at the refractory hot face that maximizes the tapblock and refractory lifetime."
