This investigation was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines to determine if high-purity ductile molybdenum of uniform quality can be prepared by bomb reduction techniques. Molybdenum trioxide (Mo03) and mixtures of molybdenum dioxide (Mo02) and trioxide were reduced by magnesium in closed steel bomb reactors. Very high pressures in excess of 5,000 p.s.i. developed during magnesium reductions of Mo03. The addition of calcium oxide to the bomb charges caused a significant reduction in pressure. Reaction efficiencies higher than 95 percent were obtained during magnesium reductions of either Mo03 or mixtures of Mo02 and Mo03, but high pressures were encountered when the charges contained from 30 to 60 percent Mo02. Reaction efficiencies were usually low (less than 80 percent) when the bomb charges contained more than 40 percent Mo02. The charges with the best composition considering operating pressure, yield, and purity contained from 10 to 30 percent Mo02. The addition of small amounts of carbon to the reaction charges was helpful because some deoxidation occurred during the reduction and also during subsequent arc-melting of the regulus metal. The purity of the bomb-reduced, arc-cast molybdenum metal ranged from 99.2 to 99.8 percent and in some instances the metal contained as little as 5 parts per million oxygen.

Threshold blasting involves the use of small amounts of high explosive to break and fragment hard rock without having to evacuate mining personnel. The method is easily assimilated and effective in rockbreaking, but requires rigid control on drilling, charging and timing. Current underground trials are aimed at fine-tuning the amount of explosive energy and blast hole geometry to allow the firing of multiple sets of shot holes in a continuous manner. Through correct procedures, the after-blast fumes, dust and fly rock can be contained so as to provide a safe working environment. Threshold blasting hugely reduces the volumes of explosives used in mining and brings to maturity the potential of the process begun by Alfred Nobel when he introduced nitroglycerine, and later dynamite, to mining. Its key contribution is its enabling of continuous mining operations with well understood and relatively low cost technologies. The use of batch blasting, employing large burdens holds the greatest potential for delivering high flow rates of ore at minimal cost. There is good potential for rapid evolution of the concept.

This paper describes an apparatus which was developed to study solid-vapour equilibria and presents results which were obtained during a study of the FeCI3-AlCI3-CI2 system. Analysis of the results showsthat fractional desublimation might offer a means of achieving a useful separation of the iron and aluminium chlorides produced by the chlorination of bauxite. The results, presented in the form of isothermal vapour pressure curves covering the range of temperature 160-200°C, support the earlier findings of Semenenko et al (Dokl Akad Nauk SSSR, 154: 42-43 (1964)) that the solid phase contains two terminal solid solutions.The equilibrium constant for the formation of the mixed dimer, FeAICI6, was approximately 4. The latent heat of sublimation of aluminium chloride varied from 18 to 26 kcal/mole AI2CI6 for solid compositionsfrom 0.9 to 0·5 mole fraction FeCls3.

Lead smelter slags, produced during the last century in quantities ofmillions of tonnes at Lavrion, Greece, have recently been used in theconstruction of Lavrion harbour. In order to evaluate the geochemicalstability of slags and assess their environmental impact on the aquatic environment, a detailed study on lead leachability under conditions that simulate subsea environments was carried out. Leaching experiments using magnesium chloride solutions under mild temperature conditions were conducted and the effect of main parameters on lead solubility was examined. Furthermore, kinetic analysis on the experimental results was performed. Based on the results, lead dissolution increases by increasing the reaction time, magnesium chloride concentration in the bulk solution and temperature, whereas it decreases by increasing the slags particle size. The reaction order was found to be approximately 0.5 at the initial extraction stages and the activation energy value from the Arrhenius plot was estimated to 29.8 KJ/mole. Diagnostic equations applied to all the experimental data reveal that lead dissolution is mainly controlled by diffusion through the ferrosilicate matrix of the slag particles, which is in accordance with the low activation energy value. The JanderÆs diffusion equation [1-(1-a)1/3]2=kt was proposed as the equation representing the reaction of lead dissolution from slags using magnesium chloride solutions.

In an attempt to develop technology to use domestic resources in place of imported bauxita, the Bureau of Mines investigated sulfurous acid leaching to extract alumina from kaolin. The process consists of leaching the calcined kaolin with a 30 wt-pct S02 solution at 60° C and 160 psig for 17 hours, fil¬tering the leach slurry, precipitating monobasic aluminum sulfite from the filtrate at 110° C and 60 psig, a& decomposing the sulfite in the spent liq¬uor at 150° C and 55 psig to produce crude alumina. Purification of the crude alumina was accomplished using a modified Bayer process. Results from closed-circuit tests employing the sulfurous acid process showed that overall extraction of alumina from kaolin was 67 pct. Production of 1 ton of alumina would require 3.6 tons of calcined kaolin, 0.7 ton of sul¬fur dioxide, and 8.4 tons of water. After purification by a modified Bayer process, the alumina product contained the following; impurities, expressed in weight-percent: Fa203, 0.009; S, 3.6; Si02, 0.07; Ti02, 0.002; K20, 0.017; and P205, 0.03.

Public-private partnership efforts are working to create green landscapes from abandoned industrial sites. Fabricated soils, potentially an essential element of such landscapes, are designed to substitute for topsoil on the areas free from ground cover and plant community. The aluminosilicate matrix and humus form the soil micelle - the primary unit of any soil complex. Humus formation is a process based on carbon-nitrogen interaction. Sources of carbon can be materials rich in easily composted products like cellulose and polyphenols (plant leaves) or aged lignin polymers (saw dust from different woody plants). The pathways of carbon-nitrogen complexes are discussed. Properties of the fabricated soil components were examined by bio-tests and plant models.

"A number of high wall failures have occurred in some of the Alberta coal strip mines of a type called by the authors ""Multiple block plane shear slope failure "". They cause rapid deterioration of the dragline bench, reduced productivity and maintenance costs.The failures are invariably associated with the presence of almost horizontal (± 5 degrees) bentonitic clay bands in the overburden, often immediately above the coal seam, and regress behind the slope as a series of tension cracks which isolate detached blocks. As many as 17 sets of cracks have been observed, at lateral distances in excess of five times the slope height from the toe.The theory of this mode of failure is presented and a limiting equilibrium computer program which will produce deterministic or probabilistic (Monte Carlo) solutions is briefly described. A case history of one such failure is documented. It is shown that the extent of the regressive failure is exceedingly sensitive to the water table elevation, leading to the conclusion that drainage, if practical, represents the best control strategy. "Using hyperbolic relationships for the non-linear responses of shaft and base resistances, a method is proposed for estimating initial shaft and base stiffnesses and ultimate shaft and base resistances of a pile from pile load test results. An iterative procedure is used to arrive at the values of shaft-soil and base stiffnesses and the ultimate shaft and base resistances. The method is applied to load - displacement data available from pile load test results to illustrate its efficacy.INTRODUCTIONA pile foundation is the most effective and economical solution in transferring large vertical loads to deeper depths. As the pile is subjected to axial load, the soil mass surrounding the pile is vital in providing vertical support for the pile. The nature of pile–soil interaction is three dimensional and to complicate the problem further, response of soil is nonlinear. Finding a closed form solution to such problem is extremely difficult. Several methods were developed to study and predict the response of the composite pile–soil system. Faruque and Desai (1982) implemented both numerical and geometric non-linearities in their three dimensional finite element model. Rajashree and Sitharam (2001) developed a nonlinear finite element model of batter piles under lateral loading using a hyperbolic relation for static load condition and modified hyperbolic relation, including degradation and gap for cyclic load condition.The ultimate capacity of the pile is estimated considering the strengths and unit weights of soil layers with depth, overburden pressure and other relevant parameters. The estimated capacities always need to be validated by conducting initial maintained load test. The estimated capacity may differ with the actual at site since the values of strength, stiffness, interface resistance between pile and soil, lateral earth pressure coefficient with depth and soil stratification, etc., differ from the design parameters considered for estimating the ultimate capacity of pile. The estimation of axial capacity of piles involves considerable uncertainties in selection of appropriate design parameters and the design rules are not always consistent with the installation procedures/processes involved."

A short account is given of the theory and practice of determining the true U3O8 content of ore samples by the determination of the beta and gamma activities separately, using the method of Eichholz and his associates.It is shown that, despite the variation of sample activity without change in U3O8 content, the true U3O8 value can still be found.Thorium can be determined simultaneously if this element is also present.

Increased consumption of concrete in the Pacific Northwest has pushed aggregate resource development pressure from urban areas west of the Cascade Range to rural areas east of the Cascades. Some recent development has focused on barge and rail accessible off-reservation Indian allotments that are exempt from state and county regulations. These lands have their own unique set of challenges, especially when Federal and Tribal governments have conflicting goals and attitudes pertaining to resource development. This paper discusses issues of leasing, reclamation, Federal vs. Tribal authority, cultural resources, and the history of allotment.

"In the ten years from 2003 to 2013 global mine production of copper has increased by over 23% to meet demand while the weighted average head grade has dropped from 0.9 to 0.7% Cu. These divergent trends of increasing demand and declining economic grades will extend the life of many existing mines and improve the viability of marginal and/or complex copper deposits. Against that context this paper outlines hydrometallurgical copper sulphide leaching options as alternatives to the more conventional pyrometallurgical processing route of copper sulphides. Three copper sulphide leaching and refining processes are discussed: total pressure oxidation, ferric sulphate leaching and copper chloride leaching. The effect of mineralogy on the choice of processing technology is discussed as well as some of the unit processes used. Additionally, possible benefits that a hydrometallurgical process may offer over an existing pyrometallurgical route are discussed. Subsequently, two very important aspects to the development of projects involving the leaching of copper sulphides are discussed. Finally, a number of conclusions are presented that will be useful to keep in mind when considering projects involving the leaching of copper sulphides. A problem has always existed in deep and fast drilling situations such as coal overburden drilling, or when drilling with a tight annulus, such as 9 7/8" bits and 8 5/8" pipe. This problem is the difficulty experienced by blasthole bit and blasthole drill rig manufacturers to attain large jumps in bit and drill rig productivity through bit and rig design, when drilling in these specific situations. In other drilling situations, these large jumps in productivity have been easily attained.

"Landslide activity along U.S. 50 in Cincinnati, Ohio (USA) has caused roadway damage for decades. After a necessary closure of three lanes due to slope movements, emergency stabilization measures were undertaken to protect the roadway by providing a short-term solution necessitated by The Ohio Department of Transportation budget constraints. The landslide shear plane occurred on a sloping bedrock surface as much as 50 feet below grade. Drilled shafts were installed 40 feet downslope of the roadway shoulder and were heavily reinforced across the shear plane but steel reinforcing did not extend the full length of the shafts and was stopped well short of the ground surface. Instrumentation data has been collected for 11 years after construction has shown these “Stub Piers” have provided much more than a short-term solution and have provided an attractive alternate to conventional deep shafts or tieback drilled shaft options.INTRODUCTIONLandslide activity has occurred along U.S. Route 50 in western Cincinnati, Ohio for many decades. The site is located between North Bend and Addyston, Ohio on the right descending (cutting) bank of the Ohio River. Road distress caused by slope movements required periodic repairs over recent decades. Railroad tracks downslope of the roadway also showed signs of horizontal displacement and periodic repair. Visual evidence in 2005 suggested the shear plane extended below the US 50 roadway and extended out into the Ohio River.A weed and brush-covered slope extended down slope from the roadway at about 3H:1V for a vertical distance of about 20 feet. Above US 50, the hillside continued to rise more than 100 feet. There is a railroad right-of-way at the toe of the slope with the Ohio River bank just downslope of the railroad.In 2005, Terracon Consultants was retained by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) to perform a geotechnical study that included 17 test borings and inclinometer monitoring at 4 locations. Roadway damage was occurring (see Figure 1). After only a few weeks of monitoring, the inclinometer casings sheared off about 50 feet below grade, near the soil / bedrock interface (see Figure 2). Soon after, the roadway distress worsened, causing ODOT to close 3 of the 4 lanes to traffic and reroute traffic onto the remaining single lane and shoulder. Terracon was asked to develop a stabilization design under emergency repair conditions. However, both limited budget and time-related constraints necessitated a direction by ODOT that the solution be at least “pseudo” short-term (3 to 5 years)."

Silica reacts with cryolite at 1010°C in two stages. The first stage is the formation of a sodium aluminosilicate of composition consistent with the mineral jadeite (Na20.AI20s.4Si02). The formation proceeds by atleast two different reactions. Formation of alumina or an aluminosilicate proceeds to its limiting value in the first 30 min while the formation of jadeite proceeds at a steady rate until quantitative conversion is achieved after 150 min. The net overall reaction can be expressed by the equation 6 Si02+2 Na3AlF6? (Na20.AI20s.4Si02) +2 SiF4 +4NaF.The second stage involves a slow reaction that proceeds with the evolution of a little SiF4, The net result is the formation of sodium aluminosilicates that are soluble in 30 per cent AlCIs-HCI solutions. While this could be explained by disproportionation of jadeite to form albite (Na20.Al203.6Si02) and nepheline (Na20. AI203.2Si02), it is more likely that it is due to further but limited reaction between the oxides and fiuoroaluminates.

The primary water supply system for the City of San Francisco and adjacent peninsula areas consists of aging and deteriorated pipelines crossing under the San Francisco Bay (the Bay). This system is highly vulnerable to seismic damage from the nearby San Andreas and Hayward fault zones. The Bay Tunnel Project will replace the existing system with a 8-km-long (5-mi-long) tunnel underneath the Bay. The tunnel will be constructed using earth pressure balance methods and will have a two-pass lining system of precast concrete bolted, gasketed segments for initial support, and a welded steel pipe final lining. The project challenges include tunneling through both soft ground and rock conditions without any intermediate shaft access over the entire alignment. Seismic performance criteria include maintaining service flows after a large earthquake.

On 25 August 1971, the U.S. Bureau of Mines contracted with the Aerojet Liquid Rocket Company to perform an engineering research program to be completed on 25 May 1972. The program objective was to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the underground use of several power sources including but not limited to a closed cycle diesel, electric cable/motor, rechargeable battery/ motor and exhausting diesel for mine shuttle cars, with emphasis on health and safety. This report, Research in Advanced Power Systems for Mining Health and Safety consists of four (4) main parts: (1) Hazards and Safety Analysis of Mine Power Systems, (2) Evaluation of Closed Cycle Diesel Power System for Mine Applications, (3) Closed Cycle Diesel Power System Consumables Compatibility, and (4) Concluding Remarks and Recommendations. The hazards introduced to a mine by shuttle car power system failure modes were evaluated and reported. A "fault tree" analysis was generated for each power system and the probability of death or injury during an eight (8) hour shift and for a week of operation (105 hours) were estimated. Advantages and disadvantages were also reported for each system studied. Aerojet's assessment, based on a "forced decisions analysis," of the four shuttle car power systems as to their relative health and safety is that the exhausting or open cycle diesel is preferred, followed by the closed cycle diesel, the electric cable/motor and the rechargeable battery/motor. The assessment was based on ten parameters pertinent to the health and safety aspects of shuttle cars. Drawing layouts of two typical mine shuttle cars incorporating closed cycle diesel powerplant concepts are included in this report. The performance parameters established for the two concepts are tabulated. A study was made of the logistics involved in transporting and replenishing the consumables needed to operate a shuttle car equipped with a closed cycle diesel. The closed cycle diesel powerplant consumables -oxygen, potassium hydroxide, and diesel fuel - were analyzed as to their compatibility with materials found normally in a gassy coal mine. Spill tests simulating inadvertent leakage of liquid oxygen in a coal mine were performed. A critical evaluation of existing oxygen sensitivity data and the relationship to the use of oxygen on a shuttle car in a coal mine environment is presented.

Mine seals can he remotely constructed in underground coal mines through vertical boreholes when direct access to a fire is impossible or considered to he too dangerous. This method has great merit because the boreholes can be drilled to specific mine areas, and the seals can be positioned close to a fire zone. The technology however can be largely ineffective if the constructed seals do not provide of effective barriers to airflow or if they cannot he used to impound water and other inert materials. Unfortunately, no viable alternatives exists to sealing the entire mine to the ground surface. Full-scale remote mine seal construction research is being conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL). Under this effort. Howard Concrete Pumping Company and GAI Consultants Inc. have joined forces to evaluate a potentially significant improvement to the current state of the art. This paper covers the development o f novel technology or rewrote mine seal construction, the evaluation of rite materials used, the construction practice and the Fellow-up testing.

An increase in concentration of a Zn-containing volatile complex for synthesis of ZnO films was investigated when processing their target by ultraviolet radiation emitted by mercury lamp. The experiments were carried out using a flow-type quartz reactor. ZnO tableted target was preliminarily irradiated during 2 to 7 hours. H2O2 (98%) vapor at 25Pa passed through the reactor with ZnO target at 373K. As substrate material, five subsequent quartz cylinders were used at 423K. The experiment lasts 4 hours. H2O2 decomposition on ZnO surface was accompanied by formation of a Zn-containing volatile complex which passed in gas phase and decomposed on the substrates with isolation of final ZnO. The concentration of the Zn-containing volatile complex (N) in gas phase increases with UV pre-irradiation time (t) (without irradiation N = 1.05 1011 particles/cm3; after t=2 hours, N = 5.19 1011 particles/cm3, after t=4 hours, N = 9.95 1011 particles/cm3; after t=7 hours, N = 1.86 1012 particles/cm3.
