"Laboratory-scale hydrochloric acid leach tests were conducted on an Elliot Lake uranium ore. Hydrochloric acid leaches without an oxidant or with molecular oxygen (i.e., air or pure oxygen gas) as an oxidant favoured uranium and radium extractions. Conditions for maximum uranium, thorium and radium extractions with hydrochloric acid in the presence of sodium chlorate were determined. The highest extractions of uranium (96%), thorium (81%) and radium (91%) were obtained using a mixture of 44.0 kg HCI and 2.5 kg NaCIOJ per tonne of ore at 75°C with 18 hours ' retention.Flowsheets for two-stage leaching are proposed. The residues obtained from the second-stage leach contain uranium (0.002%), thorium (0.006%) and radium (15 to 20 pCi/g). Tailings of this nature are considered suitable for mine backfill, and, if pyrite is removed, suitable for surface disposal.IntroductionThe nuclear energy industry forecasts an increasing demand for uranium. Since 1928, nearly 64 km (40 mi) of tunnel have been excavated within the relatively soft Cooper Group, more commonly known as the “Cooper Marl,” for water supply and transporting wastewater in the Charleston area. The majority of these tunnels are unlined and still in operation, while others collapsed shortly after excavating. Tunnel behavior and support requirements vary considerably in this material due to differences in geotechnical properties. The 4.8 km (3 mi) long, 2.4 m (8 ft) diameter Bushy Park Water Tunnel, completed in 1997 for Charleston’s Commissioners of Public Works(CPW), required no ground support. By comparison, the 1.6 km (1 mi) long, 2.4 m (8 ft)diameter Harbor Wastewater Replacement Tunnel now under construction needs continuous support close to the advancing face, despite being located in the same geological formation. Case histories and general guidelines for designing tunnels in the Cooper Marl are presented.

Before we look at what the challenges and opportunities for future coal mining will be, it is appropriate to have a look at whether there will be a coal industry in the future. There is much talk about the damage caused by the burning of fossil fuels and the need to replace coal and oil with more environmentally friendly energy sources. Yes, there is evidence that the current practice in burning of fossil fuel has certain negative environmental effects, however, the adverse effects for global economic development from inappropriate measures to control greenhouse gas emissions would be severe.

When the opportunity to revisit the region was offered in 1929, as a result of a cooperative agreement between the State Mining Board of Oregon and the United States Geological Survey, it seemed advisable to pay particular attention to this feature of the lodes, in the hope that if the idea of zonal relations was confirmed it might serve as a guide in exploitation.

Lacustrine sediments, hydrothermal explosion breccias and spring precipitates deposited 5200 - 1800 years BP as a result of geothermal activity at Lake Rotokaua, contain New Zealand's largest known sulphur reserves. Current drill indicated reserves are 2 600 000 tonnes of elemental sulphur, assuming a ten per cent (dry basis) cut-off, contained in some 17 000 000 tonnes of ore with an average grade of 214.0 per cent (dry basis) sulphur. Additional inferred ore containing 500 000 - 900 000 tonnes of sulphur has yet to be prospected by drilling. Geological factors will be important in exploitation of the deposit, particularly the extent and disposition of the orebody, sulphur grades and distribution, physical characteristics of the ore, permeability and stability of the overburden and the nature and extent of geothermal activity in the area. Trials to date indicate that Frasch mining and possibly opencutting are unlikely to be successful mining methods. Further mining feasibility studies will be required to ascertain the most likely mining system for the deposit.

My selection of the Australian coal industry as the theme of this Presidential Address arose from the fact that it is one of our most important mineral industries. The industry is presently prospering.M.ore coal, mostly of better quality (except for certarn power-house types), is being produced more cheaply in terms of real money than at any time in the past, and exports overseas are currently at a highlevel.In. spite of this, concern has been expressed in certam quarters about the future of some phases of the industry; for example, there has been some public comment on the selling price of our coking coal to Japan, the possible over-export of our coking coals from New South Wales, the introduction of foreign capital to develop large-scale mining ventures in Queensland, and the proposed export of substantial quantities of coking coal from the same State.Furthermore, proposals for the introduction of atomic power plants into several States well endowed with reserves of coal have given rise to comment, and recently the Department of National Development(1968) warned that insufficient attention is being paid to "orderly development and careful husbanding of the nation's coal.To reach a balanced judgment on whether these views are well founded it is essential to make a broad survey of the present position of the coal industry in the Australian economy. I therefore propose to deal briefly with several aspects, and to comment, in particular, on the important subjects of exploration and research in progress at present on Australian coals.Detailed descriptions of the Australian coalfields are to be found in existing technical publications (e.g.. Andrew, 1965; McLeod, 1965) and the data on coal reserves have been progressively revised as more accurate information has become available. Keywords: Pd-Ni alloys, Pd-Fe alloys, Pd-Co alloys, Magnetostriction, Magnetic Properties The presence of congruent melting minima, the occurrence of ferromagnetic transition over a large composition range, and FCC type crystal structure make Pd-Ni, Pd-Co, and Pd-Fe based systems attractive candidates in our search for materials with no rare-earths, large low-field magnetostriction, and good mechanical properties. The presence of paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition over a broad range of composition also provides opportunity for fundamental studies. In this work, we have examined the magnetic and magnetostrictive behavior of Pd-Ni, Pd-Co, and Pd-Fe alloys over the entire composition range. Alloy sample rods were prepared by arc melting and casting. X-ray diffractometer was used to obtain lattice parameter data. Magnetostriction was measured along the rod axis using strain gages. Magnetic properties were measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer.

The catalytic effect of ferrous ion in the industrial biohydrometallurgical heap and dump leaching processes is explained. During the bacterial leaching of metal sulfides, ferric ion will partly be hydrolyzed and a variety of sols, gels, amorphous and/ or crystalline mono- and polynuc- lear hydroxo- and sulfato complex species formed, especially by olation and aggregation reactions. There are many problems associated with these iron precipitates especially in the purification of leach solutions. The present study will discuss the iron precipitation reactions; gives kinetic and thermodynamic evaluations of the effect of temperature on pyrite and ferrous iron oxidation; and reports on the tolerance of heavy metal ion concentrations by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans.

The Outokumpu Steel Belt Sintering (SBS) Technology is used for manufacturing chromite pellets that are charged into a smelting furnace for ferrochromium production. One of the main elements in successful furnace operation is the control of gas flows inside the furnace, giving improved temperature distribution in the bed during the process. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) gives excellent opportunities for studying these phenomena. An investigation using CFD can be performed relatively fast. For example, implications of different configurations can be studied within a day and an optimum design chosen. Therefore, Outokumpu Technology has developed a Steel Belt Sintering Model (SBSM), which takes advantage of a commercial CFD code. Each main physicochemical event occurring in a steel belt sintering furnace is incorporated independently in the SBS model as a sub-model, enabling every event to be studied separately. The commercial CFD code solves mass, momentum, species and energy equations for determination of the gas flow, composition and temperature. In addition, the Outokumpu SBSM takes into account the moving pellet bed, drying of pellets interms of water content, coke combustion, oxidation and reduction of chromite and the decomposition of carbonates and silicates. During the development of the model, numerous laboratory-scale tests were performed. The sub-models were validated against the laboratory tests. The reliability of the Outokumpu Steel Belt Sintering Model was validated against a pilot-scale batch-sintering furnace by comparing the modelling results against measurements. The aim of this paper is to give a brief presentation of the Outokumpu steel belt sintering model by showing some general modelling examples. Emphasis has been placed on demonstrating some of the main features of the model.

The study described in this paper is first centered on the determination of the physical properties (gravimetric, magnetic, electrical, and electromagnetic) o f metamorphosed iron ores of the Carol Lake-Labrador City District. Different geophysical surveys available in the Carol Lake-Wabush area were interpreted quantitatively and the dimensions, attitude, and tonnage of the ore bodies investigated were determined. A geophysical-statistical study was undertaken which permitted the determination of the grade of iron, magnetite, and, subsequently, specularite in the ore bodies. A discussion of the theory and logical progression of the study and the application of the results to actual geophysical data is presented. The conclusions, which are of real significance from the economic standpoint, may be predicted from the data obtained from geophysical surveys before any diamond drilling is undertaken. An integrated interpretation of this type is useful in planning future exploration work and selecting the most favorable geological structures. It also serves as a guide to minimize and determine tonnage drilling patterns. The general conclusion that a restricted range of residual gravity and magnetic anomalies are a key to exploration is valid. Indeed large depths to the top of deposits are absent since all the ore bodies are overturned synclinal structures with tops located close to the surface. Certain irregular geometries do occur but they are not common and the alignment of the iron ore bodies is sub parallel so that magnetic anomalies are evenly reduced in the earth's magnetic field vector.

Airblast overpressure levels can commonly be increased by up to 20 decibels (dBL) by the effects of meteorology, due to inversions and wind shear. Existing atmospheric refraction models can provide a good evaluation of the effects of meteorology, but have been limited in the accuracy of their outputs by the accuracy of the meteorological data that is available for input. This paper uses case histories from open-pit coal mine blasting in the Hunter Valley area of Australia to provide examples of increases in airblast due to inversions, wind shear, and a combination of both. It gives details of our experience of the accuracy with which predictions and assessments can be made using meteorological data of various levels of accuracy, and on the design buffer that is required to prevent the exceedence of airblast limits. The accuracy of meteorological prediction and assessment will shortly be improved by the use of sounding equipment that gives continuous measurements of temperature and wind velocity at significant levels above the ground. The paper also gives details of an industry funded research project that aims to permit the effective use of this data at distances many kilometres (km) (miles) from the location of the sounding equipment, and to develop a short term predictive model that will permit the amount of meteorological reinforcement that will occur at firing time to be determined before a decision is made to tie up a shot.

Synthesis report on a project carried out under the EC-funded BRITE-EURAM programme. A large deposit in Spain and several smaller ones in Greece and Sweden were investigated. Beneficiation testwork, including the development of an innovative wet circuit, was undertaken in Italy. The Spanish Ilustracion deposit lies occurs in thin, white layers throughout a zone 35-40 m thick and 1.5 km long, in laminated calcsilicates. Total resources of more than 100 000 000 t include proven open-pittable reserves of 4 500 000 t averaging 35% wollastonite. The beneficiated product is suitable for various applications, including ceramics. The Swedish and Greek marble-hosted skarn deposits include Albatross, with 2 500 000 t of reserves at 30% wollastonite, and Panorama, with reserves estimated at more than 700 000 t

Grinding Mill Operation and Maintenance - Central to Asset Management Since 2005, RME has pursued a vision for a new grinding plant operational paradigm, made possible by RME's latest Mill Relining Systems. At some sites, new liners degrade SAG mill performance. The variables include mill volume loss, rotational speed limitations (ball strike) and liner designs developed for longer and longer life but without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences of whole plant performance. Freshly relined mills can initially deliver as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the liners' wear life. RME's proposition is to see new liners designed for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent mill relines but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance, not maximum life. In other words, mill liner profiles and relining speed become key profitability contributors and not simply 'must do' maintenance functions and costs. This paper includes a short history of RME's Mill Relining System development (Appendix A). These are the enabling technologies which permit more frequent liner exchange without incurring additional downtime imposts. The body of this paper outlines RME's vision of a 'liner profile vs. profitability' commercial model, underpinned by the rigour of PAS 55-1:2008 Asset Management Part 1: Specification for the optimised management of physical assets. The technical elements can be developed either intuitively (based on plant experience) or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum technical solution for the maximum commercial outcome. Much of this can be modelled off-line, in the virtual world, before asking senior management to commit to an expensive liner experiment. The potential benefits are compelling.

Transportation system structures have come under very close scrutiny in the last couple of years, largely due to the damaging effects of disasters, both natural and man-made. In the Pacific northwest and California, earthquake risk is a major concern. In the central and eastern states barge impacts on bridge piers and docks are a big worry. In all cases of bridges over water and waterside structures, scour is a primary concern. Some of the results of this scrutiny have been changes in design and construction methods, and the introduction of more testing to supplement field inspection during construction, and throughout the service life of the structure. Future construction of bridges and docks will almost certainly see a continuing growth in these practices. Where foundations are concerned, particularly for bridges and waterside structures, many state and local authorities have started specifying drilled shafts rather than driven piles. Where the shafts must be constructed under water or slurry, visual inspection of most of the work is impossible, and one of several different Nondestructive Tests (NDT) is often specified. Contractors' experiences with these methods have varied considerably, and there is a great deal of controversy in the deep foundation industry over the reliability of NDT methods for assessing the integrity of foundation shafts or piles. The author has had more than 15 years of practice with the various NDT methods for deep foundations, on projects all over the US, particularly foundations for bridges and dock structures, and has developed an understanding of the "NDT controversy" as it has become known. In particular, experiences in the Pacific Northwest, California, and Alabama have illustrated the reasons for the controversy. This paper reviews these experiences, and suggests some steps that owners and contractors can take to reduce the risk of inconclusive or downright inaccurate test results.

Keywords: Recycling, Aluminum Metal Matrix Composite, Ionic Liquids, BMIC Recycling of aluminum metal matrix composites (MMC) via electrolysis in ionic liquids at near room temperature was investigated. The electrolytic melt comprised of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIC) and anhydrous AlCl3. Impure aluminum composite (Duralcan MMC Al-380, 20 vol % SiC) was electrochemically dissolved at the anode and pure aluminum (>98%) was deposited on a copper cathode. The deposits were characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffractrometer, and mass spectrometer. The influence of various process parameters such as concentration of electrolyte, and applied cell voltage on the recycling process was studied. The recycling process yielded current densities in the range of 200-500 A/m2, and cathode current efficiency of about 85%. The results indicated that impurities such as Cu, Si, Ni, Fe, Mg, Mn, and SiC particles were removed as anode residue. Energy consumption of about 3.7-6.3 kWh/kg-Al was obtained at a cell voltage of 1.0-2.0 V and cell temperature of 100 ± 5°C. Low energy consumption and no emission of pollutants are the two main advantages of this process compared to present recycling processes.

Keyboard patterns of hundreds of minor faults with vertical displacements of 3 mm to 2 m occur within the Greta coal seam and cause serious mining problems in collieries. Many of the faults are concentrated in linear zones termed swarms. One swarm is 600 m wide and more than 800 m long and others are of comparable size.The minor faults between the swarms are normal and are relatively widely spaced and show dip-slip movements, but the faults within a swarm are clustered and show strike-slip and oblique-slip movements. Fault swarms ofthis size and frequency have not previously been described from the Sydney Basin or on a comparable scale elsewhere but appear to be a widespread phenomenon in Australian coalfields. The faults are assigned to classes onthe basis of orientation which are then assigned to sequential phases I to IV on the basis of offsetting relations between representatives of each class. Phase I faults are minor thrusts. Phase IT, Ill, and IV faults are concentratedin the swarms and show sinistral strike-slip and normal dip-slip movements. The interference of slickenlines indicates that multiple movements have occurred within a single phase; their order is (i) strike slip (ii) dip slip and (iii) oblique slip. All faults truncate and post-date both cleat and sedimentary "stone" dykes.Phase I minor thrusts trend at a high angle to the Hunter Thrust and are considered to predate the Late Permian movements on the Hunter Thrust. Phase II and III minor faults are younger and may be any age between the latePermian and Tertiary.

Up to 1914 almost all of the world's supply of potash came from Germany and Alsace. With the cessation of shipments from Germany during the World War the importance of a domestic suppler was evident. During the past 15 years the United States has been working toward the establishment of a domestic potash industry which would end foreign dominance in this commodity. The Federal government has taken an active part in this program. As its share in the work, the Bureau of Lines has ascertained the potash resources in certain district's through core drilling and has engaged in a comprehensive program of research on the extraction of potash from its various minerals. Until the passage of the Winter bill (H. R. 496) by Congress in 1928 the Bureau of Mines had not been able to give any consideration to the western ores, wyomingite (leucite) and alunite. With the massage of this bill, however, the ray was opened for the extension of the potash studies to cover these materials.
