"This paper examines the change in surface properties of the Polyurea used on spirals at different operational times: unused spiral, 28 months in operation and 58 months in operation. This is being done to investigate the alleged statement that spirals have a decrease in spiral separation efficiency after a certain period of operational time. Observing the surface characteristics under 1.5x and 36x magnification it can be concluded that the surface roughness decreases with increased operational time. This may be explained by a decrease in air inclusions and streak lines as the spiral surface wears. Decreased surface roughness should in theory have a beneficial effect on spiral separation performance. This leads to the conclusion that if a decrease in spiral separation performance is observed after a certain period of operation, it can’t be attributed to the change in surface properties. Uneven wear of the spiral surface, material creep or application of force to the spiral will change the profile of the spiral and could cause an adverse effect on spiral separation performance. The metallurgical test work showed that the best results are obtained at 30 - 35% solids by mass in the spiral feed. The iron recovery was significantly higher in the new spiral in comparison to the 2012 and 2010 spirals. The mass yield to concentrate in the new spiral was approximately three times more than for the older spirals. "Ironstone Resources Ltd. is developing the Clear Hills oolitic iron ore deposit in northwest Alberta, Canada. Sources of oolitic iron ore worldwide are abundant and ubiquitous, but there is currently no commercial technology to extract iron from oolitic iron ores. Mineral processing of the ore to generate a commercial iron ore concentrate is very challenging due to the nature of these ores. Accordingly, Hatch and Ironstone are developing a new pyrometallurgical process (Hatch Ironstone Chloride Segregation) to produce metallic iron from high silica and high phosphorus oolitic iron ores. Following the chloride segregation process, the treated ore is subjected to fine grinding. The iron is then separated by magnetic separation. The iron grade and phosphorus content of the final product shows a strong dependence on the separation methodology and the grind size. The pyrometallurgical process has been developed and tested at a lab-scale pilot plant. The commercialization of this technology could provide an opportunity for the development of a new alternate iron making technology. This paper presents the results of test work done on the raw iron ore to create a concentrate and also on the products of the pyrometallurgical process for the production of a high grade 90% metallic iron product.INTRODUCTION Oolite is a sedimentary rock formed from ooids – spherical particles with concentric layers. There are a number of large oolitic iron deposits where the mineralogical form features a low iron content and high concentration of impurities making them presently impossible to exploit on either a technical or economic basis. The fifteen largest oolitic iron ore deposits in the world are estimated to contain approximately 337 billion tonnes of iron ore, which would be a significant source of supply for worldwide steel production. A viable process that can economically recover iron from these oolitic iron ore deposits could become an important new technology to meet future demand in the steel industry. Hatch and Ironstone have demonstrated that oolitic iron ores can be exploited to produce direct reduced iron (DRI). Direct reduction ironmaking is a method for producing solid metallic iron using different techniques compared to the blast furnace process, which is the more conventional ironmaking route. The demand for the construction of direct reduction ironmaking plants has increased in response to the increasing demand for crude steel. It is viewed as a method of providing low-residual iron sources to scrap-based steelmaking in electric arc furnaces."

This paper describes the unusual hazardous conditions encountered in mining thick, inclined coal beds under heavy cover in Carbon County, Utah. This description includes heavy roof conditions, sloughing ribs, steep pitches, and severe bouncing experience. Emphasis is placed on the top bench system of mining and development in the top half of a 16-ft seam, under the roof rock, which is bolted, and the recovery of the bottom coal on retreat; success of bolted roof and ribs; and shuttle car haulage on pitches up to 25%. The use of protective cages for operators of face equipment, the guarding of belt conveyor systems to prevent injury associated with deliberate entry, and the positive lockout of electrical equipment is described and illustrated. Most coal mining areas of the Western United States are characterized either by thick beds, steep pitches or heavy cover. Individually, each of these may present inherent safety hazards that in- fluence mining. When all are met at one location, the combined effect is to make the safe operation of the mining property a challenge to management. These combined conditions are met in the coal mines of the Columbia-Geneva Steel Div. of the United States Steel Corp., in southeastern Utah. This coal bed measures up to 16 ft in thickness, the pitch is as much as 25% and mining is under a cover approaching 3000 ft. The Sunnyside coal bed is found in the Book Cliff Mountains, a great escarpment extending from west of Castle Gate, Utah, some 180 miles to Grand Junction, Colo. West of Green River, Utah, the Book Cliffs swing sharply to the north because of the domelike uplift of the San Rafael Swell to the southwest. It is in this northerly extension of the Book Cliffs that the Sunnyside coal in the Blackhawk Formation of the Mesa Verde Group, Upper Cretaceous Age is found. The strata are transected by numerous faults with from a few inches to as much as a hundred feet of displacement. All of these faults have had some effect on the mining operation, either in roof control or, in the case of major faulting, the pattern of mine development. The comparatively recent developments in the Wilberforce area, and the consequent arousal of public interest in radium, seemed to call for the publication of such a paper which would be intelligible to the layman. To satisfy this apparent need, the writers submit this paper which contains material derived from various sources, and for which the writers make no claim of originality. Presplit blasting in strip mines is aimed at creating a safer wall to work under during the coaling operations. Good quality presplits are also necessary for effective throw blasting and drainage of the blast block. A less obvious but important function is full coal recovery. Optimum Colliery has been experiencing rock freezing against the presplit highwalls. The rock formed in patches along the highwall and trapped coal beneath it. The material that was &ozen comprised the rock between the back row of holes and the presplit and was often up to 3 m thick (the stand off distance between the back line and the presplit). The cozen rock formed predominantly along the bottom halfor bottom two thirds of the highwall. Along the top portion of the highwall, the presplit crack was usually well formed with visible barrels. This problem, or similar variations of it, is common on many South African strip-mine operations. Investigative work was carried out at Optimum Colliery to correct the problem. This paper presents the information and measurements that were made and discusses the solutions that have been applied to solve the problem. It was found that there were two independent causes for the tiozen material, with each contributing more or less to the frozen rock along the highwall. It was found that the presplit was not forming properly in places, especially closer to the bottom of the highwalls. The reasons and the solutions are presented. The second cause was found to be associated with reduced detonation velocity in the back line holes coupled with low confinement from long delay periods. Emulsion explosive that is sensitised with air bubbles was found to be prone to this phenomenon near the back of high-energy blasts. A change in the explosive formulation in the back-line holes, together with reduced delays in the back line, has resulted in significant improvements. The details are presented in this paper.

These major topics are: (a) Nature of coal mine spoils, topsoils, and unmined soils; (b) influence of macro- and microclimate on (c) plant production on spoils and topsoils; (d) prediction of aboveground biomass from plant cover; (c) mineral composition of plants; (f) controlled environment studies on plant growth response; (g) microbial communities (h) water chemistry and organism diversity of catchbasins; (i) vegetation and soil development on abandoned, and (j) topsoiled sites; and (k) viability and diversity of seed bank. Based on these investigations, general conclusions and some recommendations are presented.

Manganese occurs as concretionary nodules ranging in size from 13 inches in their longest dimension to particles finer than 65-mesh. The nodules are embedded in soft, wet shale, which contains little manganese. The removal of nodules from the low-grade shale is a simple mechanical problem; the question is primarily to determine the lowest-cost method of separation. This report purposes to present data acquired by experimenting with samples of the ore, which form a basis for suggesting methods of concentrating manganese nodules.

Introduction The domestic copper industry has suffered for some time from declining ore grades; rising costs associated with conventional mining, milling, smelting and refining; tightening environmental restrictions; and shrinking markets due to materials substitution. Ore grade depletion is a major problem. It is illustrated by the decline in average copper yield shown in Fig. 1. From 1979, copper grade has dropped 60%, lowering yields from 1.2% to 0.49% (Sousa, 1981). The US copper industry is taking drastic measures to enhance its competitive posture and to guarantee its future worldwide position. In a sense, this involves a general restructuring of the processing philosophy of US copper producers. Judging from recent trends, this restructuring relates to the application of solution mining techniques to the treatment of copper ores and low grade waste material. Recovering copper by leaching techniques has been practiced for centuries. As early as the mid-16th century, some Hungarian copper mines were recycling copper bearing leach solutions through waste heaps (Nash, 1912). In the US, recovering copper from dilute mine waters has been carried out for more than 100 years. There are, however, certain technical innovations that have elevated the importance of solution mining as a process for copper recovery. These include: • Advances in solvent extract-electrowinning (SX-EW); • Developments in acid and acid ferric cure processes for oxide and mixed oxide sulfide ores; • Improvements in heap and dump construction; and • Advances in in situ leaching technology. Generally, solution mining enjoys certain intrinsic advantages over conventional mining and milling. Compared to conventional milling, the combined capital and operating costs of leaching facilities are normally lower, start-up times are faster, and the leaching operation usually has less impact on the environment. Furthermore, solution mining represents an expedient way of extracting metals from small shallow deposits, and is particularly suited to the treatment of low grade sources. And, in the case of waste dump leaching, there is a tremendous resource in-place that has the mining cost already off the books. This paper updates current US copper solution mining trends. Solution mining systems Schlitt (1980) summarized the characteristics of the principle leach systems in the US. He pointed out that the wide variations in copper deposits make solution mining a more site-specific activity than conventional mining and milling. Heap leaching is usually selected for moderate to high grade ores having a copper mineralization that is amenable to acid leaching (oxides, silicates and certain sulfides). Higher grade ores mined specifically for heap leaching are usually treated to optimize copper extraction, therefore, crushing and some pretreatment (acid curing) may be justified. On the other hand, dump leaching practice usually involves leaching low grade waste rock placed on large dumps as dictated by topography and haulage costs. Mine waste is therefore treated in an uncrushed run-of-mine condition. Finally, in situ leaching is appropriate for either very deep ore bodies or for recovering copper from low grade rock left behind in abandoned pit walls, stopes, and subsidence zones from earlier mining activities. True in-situ solution mining should be defined as the leaching of ore in its original geologic setting. Heap leaching Heap leaching has a long history as a hydrometallurgical process for copper recovery. Two of the largest industries in northern Michigan, pulp and paper manufacturing and iron mining, formed a mutually beneficial partnership and collaborative research program to utilize paper mill residuals for waste rock stockpile reclamation. Historically, the majority of the paper industry’s residuals have been disposed of in landfills. The beneficial use of paper mill residuals for mine reclamation provides an environmentally sound recycling solution for the solids generated at northern Michigan paper mills and eliminates the need to strip additional overburden (glacial till) for final mine reclamation. Residuals offer a cost-effective source of organics and nutrients necessary for successful reclamation and waste rock stockpiles offer an economical and environmentally sound solution for disposal of residuals. The goal is to successfully pioneer technical development of paper mill residuals to accomplish vegetation of steep waste rock stockpile slopes and benches to establish a self-sustaining plant community that meets final reclamation requirements. Of the various types of iron mining wastes, rock stockpiles pose the greatest reclamation challenge. Success depends on incorporating sufficient organic matter into the rock stockpiles to produce a growth medium that can sustain vegetation without the need of overburden. This is an ongoing research program that is evolutionary in nature with numerous field trials, greenhouse studies, data collection and monitoring over multiple growing seasons. The program is a combination of innovative ideas and accepted reclamation practices that is proving to be a beneficial and economic approach to paper mill residual management and mine reclamation that will eventually lead from research to standardized reclamation procedures.

From 19BS thru the present, Guy F. Atkinson Construction Company has been involved in several transportation construction projects in the Seattle area. Two of these contracts, the Mt. Baker Ridge Tunnel, and The Seattle Bus Tunnel, had unique foundation features. MT. BAKER RIDGE TUNNEL ACCESS PITS The Mt. Baker Ridge Tunnel is part of the general upgrading of the I-90 freeway between I-405 and I-5 (see Fig. 1). It is located on the western shore of Lake Washington and consists of a 1300 foot long large diameter tunnel thru Mt. Baker Ridge. The ridge consists of over consolidated silts and clays overlain by a loose to medium dense silty fine sand. The water table is perched in this upper layer of material. The clays of Seattle have a history of being very sensitive to excavation. The hills are marginally stable and numerous landslides have occurred recently in the area of the tunnel. [ ]

In mining simulation for fragmentation results prediction is of utmost importance to study feasibility, ensure safety, and estimate the correct use of resources in drilling an explosive to meet requirements and avoid excessive usage. One critical case is fragmentation prediction, developed through models. Developing a fragmentation model in a mining unit aims to control blasting results to align theoretical and real data and improve correlation. Therefore, it is essential to collect post-blast fragmentation data, organize it, and systematically process it to develop a suitable model that meets variable requirements. Using a robust system of equations, this model should generate the required results with minimal variability between simulation and actual results. Additionally, this model must be adaptive to reduce this variability. Studying the most known and used models in mining resulted in our work correlating Cunningham 2006, Swebrec, and CZM models. Thus, the Simfrag model was created, presenting a robust foundation and combining the most notable advantages of the aforementioned models.

"Serrana’s concentrator, in Araxii, has capacity of producing approximately 800,000 tomes of phosphate rock per year, with a P205 grade of 36%, from ores grading between 13% and 14% P205. The annual mining rate is around 3.5 Mt and the apatite is concentrated according to the following sequence: crushing, grinding, desliming, flotation and low and high intensity magnetic separations.Two industrial flotation columns (3.0 m x 4.5 m x 14.5 m) were commissioned in 1993 as a replacement for circuits of barite and apatite fines flotation. In 1994, four additional flotation columns of the same dimensions were put into operation, replacing 42 Wemco mechanical cells (300 ft3 each), in the barite pre-flotation, coarse apatite (two columns) and tailings regrind flotation Circuits. Overall, 66 mechanical cells (300 ft3 each) were replaced by only six flotation columns, designed by Cominco Engineering Services Ltd - CESL.The present paper describes the stages of process development, pilot plant testwork and implementation of the industrial project, highlighting the most relevant aspects of each of them. The results achieved are related to improvements in flotation selectivity, gains in P205 recovery and better process control, resulting in better quality products and lower production costs. Other benefits included a decrease in flotation reagents, electrical energy and maintenance materials consumption. These factors contributed to a significant decrease in the cost of phosphate rock production at Serrana, in Araxa - M G."

In carrying out the provisions as set forth by an Act of Congress (36 Stat. 369) approved May 16, 1910, effective July 1, 1910, and the amended Act of February 25, 1913, (37 Stat. 681), the Bureau of Mines, among other activities, conducts inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining with a view to improving health conditions and increasing safety and disseminates the general information gained by these studies. Through the medium of these publications, the causes as well as the methods that have been found most satisfactory in combating undesirable conditions are brought to the attention of the mining industry. This bulletin describes health and safety reports that have been published for the period July 1, 1955, through June 30, 1961. Technical Paper 705 issued in 1948 contains a listing of all Bureau of Mines publications dealing with health and safety in the mineral and allied industries from 1910 through 1946; Bulletin 558 contains a bibliography of such reports that were issued from January 1947 through June 1955.

THE Taranaki oil-field is situated on the western side of the North Island of New Zealand, at about its widest part, and may be said to be the most compact and fertile part of the Dominion, for, with the exception of the upper half of Mount Egmont and of the ranges adjoining, which absorb 36,000 acres, the whole of the area, minus what is taken up by the rivers and streams is suitable for settlement, and certainly two-thirds is good land. The gross area of the district is 2,417,299 acres. The principle rivers are the Wanganui, Mokau, Waitara, Patea and Waiwakaiho. Thallous chloride and cadmium metal were recovered from a thallium-cadmium concentrate by a method suited to the treatment of small batches. Differences in oxide solubility and control of pH were employed to separate the thallium and cadmium. The cadmium metal produced by zinc reduction analysed better than 99.95 per cent Cd and thallous chloride of high purity was precipitated from solution.

Over the past 25 years, the present author has written with several co-authors a series of papers beginning with the landmark paper in the 1st International Conference on Ground Control in Mining in 1981, in turn, based upon U. S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) funded contract research managed by the author with a final report issued in 1979, all concerning this paper?s title subject, Effect of Full-Extraction Underground Mining on Ground and Surface Waters. Initially the work was a summary of British, Russian, and Hungarian experience tailored to United States strata conditions, but has evolved into a consistent and well-documented model of the behavior of strata influenced by full-extraction underground mining such as longwall coal mining. The several strata zones recognized in these works, Surface Fracture Zone, Constrained or Aquiclude Zone, Dilated Zone, Fractured Zone, and Caved Zone, have been observed by several workers in the field. The concepts presented initially 25 years ago have been adopted, rightly or wrongly, by state regulators, ground and surface water researchers, and mining practitioners. The development and utility of these concepts and recent findings will be summarized.
