This paper discusses how modern techniques of design and construction were used to create the deep stations for the Copenhagen Metro. The deep stations are located in small squares within the city adjacent to many old and sensitive buildings. The architectural design provides a large open atrium to allow natural light to reach the column free platforms to give the citizens of Copenhagen a feeling of safety and security and encourage them to use the Metro. The design and construction contract was undertaken using the relatively new and untried Eurocodes. The resulting stations set new standards of design for underground metros and have pushed forward the frontiers of what is appropriate construction practice to protect the existing and enhance the future environment.

Top-down construction (or cut and cover construction) is providing important advantages when comparing with conventional construction techniques for commercial developments with deep basements, underground car parks or near surface infrastructure and traffic tunnels. Main features are substantially reduced restrictions to surface usage, avoidance of intervention with adjacent property, provision of rigid substructures resulting in minimal deforma­tions and settlements and, last but not least, accelerated construction pro­gramme. The present contribution illustrates the construction method in general and elaborates in detail on the special foundation works for a major urban commercial high rise development requiring a six level basement structure.

South Africa?s re-entry into the fast moving and competitive global economy calls for some careful strategic planning and a good deal of co-operation between suppliers and end-users. The issues that need addressing are generally well known and include: ?South Africa was ranked 45th out of 46 i.r.o. productivity ?SMMEs contribute 1% to exports compared to 40-60% for the ?tigers? ?High unemployment ?Limited skills of the majority of workers ?Slow growth rate of the economy ?The vast majority of suppliers are not world-class ?The vast majority of suppliers are not export or marketing orientated. In order to survive, all parties, i.e. government, labour and business, will have to play their part.

Addressing community concerns in relation to an economic activity, particularly when it causes significant community impacts, is especially important for the development of extractive industry projects. Pipelines comprise an integral part of many hydrocarbon developments, which may cause different effects on local economic development, communities and the environment compared with open cast mines. This paper explores community impacts associated with a case study of the oil pipeline æEastern Siberia-Pacific OceanÆ in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia. Based on semi-structured interviews, conducted in 2006 - 2008 in Russia, the paper investigates claims of local communities about potential impacts of the pipeline development of their environments and economic activities as well as community claims for greater involvement in sharing the benefits from this major infrastructure project. A community of Indigenous people, Evenk, is likely to be most profoundly affected by the development due to impacts on their traditional activities such as hunting and reindeer herding. The paper examines in detail the regional economic, social, environmental and Indigenous peoples concerns over the construction of the oil pipeline and investigates actions and methods adopted by community organisations to voice their concerns about the pipeline development. Finally, the paper assesses the process of interaction between the pipeline developers and regional stakeholders.

Oriel Resources has with the support of SRK (Cardiff) and DRA and Mintek (South Africa) carried our a Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) to recover high grade chrome ore from its Voskhod deposit very close to Chromtau that is near to Aktobe in Kazakhstan. Voskhod is a large podiform ore body that contains nearly 20million tons of chromite grading about 48% Cr2O3 and with a Cr/Fe ratio of over 3/1. Selected bore hole core samples were obtained from the confirmation drilling programme during the DFS phase of the project in 2005 for pilot plant test work to design the mineral beneficiation plant. The chrome ore is characterised by four main types, namely high grade lumpy and chip sized ore, high-grade fine ore, lower grade (subordinate) lumpy ore and lower grade fine ore. Gravity separation tests carried out by Mintek showed that the large density difference between the high grade (at over 3.7t/m3) and lower grade ore (at less than 2.97t/m3 ) should ensure very good separation in the DMS drum and DMS cyclone stages resulting in high recoveries of Cr2O3 - rich chromite ore products. Very high chrome ore grades of up to 64% Cr2O3 and Cr/Fe ratios of 4 to 1 were obtained at an 80% mass yield from selected samples of lumpy and chip ore size fractions. The overall predicted recovery from the design work on the mine and plant is expected to be closer to about 70% of the ROM (Run of Mine) feed. DRA has completed the design of the mineral processing plant to recover about 900 kt/a of chrome ore from the 1.3 Mt/a of ROM feed. The plant has been sized to handle up to 1.5 Mt/a and will also be able to address the variability in ore feed as different regions in the deposit are mined. The lumpy high-grade product and the chips size fraction is expected to grade around 48% Cr2O3 and the fine concentrate between 56 and 58%Cr2O3 The ratio of products is expected to be about 70, 15 and 15 percent respectively but will vary to some extent during the expected 20 year life of the mining operation based on including the associated adjacent Karaagash deposit together with the Voskhod deposit. The prediction of the product split from the processing plant depends on many factors such as the geology, mineralogy, mining, handling and metallurgical processing. An overall process flow model has been developed that covers the ROM ore, the various types of chrome ore feed to the mineral beneficiation plant, the projected products and the subsequent smelting of the chromite ores to produce High Carbon Ferrochromium. The model allows the optimisation of the quality of the chrome ore in terms of Cr2O3 content, Cr/Fe ratio and recovery to be studied. This information can also be evaluated in terms of the economic requirements for smelting High Carbon Ferrochromium (HCFeCr) at a given location. Oriel is planning to supply chrome ore to Ferrochrome plants mostly in China and Russia. The use of the model will assist to maximise the value of the Voskhod project to its owners and also assist the users of the chrome ore in selecting the appropriate supply quality to meet their needs for a given smelter operation. The smelting of high grade Voskhod ore requires a limited addition of about 5 to 7% quartz to flux the MgO and Al2O3 and about 25% coke as a reducing agent to produce an alloy containing from about 65 to 74%chromium depending on the Cr/Fe ratio.

Numerous investigators have studied grinding. Each has contributed his bit to a literature that is difficult to correlate. Too many of the results have been transformed into curves with so many "inflection points" and "counterflexures" that they obscure the issue. Some of the investigators have neglected the very essence of the problem, namely the power and the amount of material to which a known amount of work was applied. The purpose of this paper is to show the ease with which results can be interpreted when these quantities are duly recognized. Some grinding tests will be given for illustration. Grinding studies are of two kinds: (1) Study of the character of the ore and (2) study of the performance of the machines. Several ores may be crushed by a given machine, or several machines may be used on a given ore. The illustrations given in this report cover both objectives.

Attractive geology does not guarantee mining investment if a region’s policies are bad, according to mining executives surveyed in the Fraser Institute’s seventh Annual Survey of Mining Companies. Companies responsible for a combined US$642.4 million in international exploration (during 2002) rated the policy attractiveness and mineral attractiveness of mining jurisdictions around the world. Jurisdictions like Chile, Australia, Quebec and Nevada bolster their attractive geology with mining-friendly policies, the report said. These locations do well on the overall investment attractiveness index. On the other hand, jurisdictions like British Columbia and Indonesia, each with excellent geology, are hurt by their policies, which have lowered their score.

To recover the coal resources of high-sulphur anthracite in Jincheng Mining Area, underground coal gasification (UCG) of No. 15 seam in Fenghuangshan Coal Mine was proposed. The feasibility of the project was confirmed by investigations of occurrence conditions, coal properties, and roof conditions, as well as experimental studies and theoretical analysis. It was found that UCG technology is appropriate to be adopted in the mining of the No. 15 seam, due to the stable rock conditions, simple geological structure and hydrogeology, the high carbon content of the coal, non-cohesiveness, medium-thermal stability, high ash fusion temperature, and weak reactivity with CO2. Further factors are the characteristics of the immediate roof, which consists of 9.11 m of limestone and mudstone with a compact structure and low permeability, and 4.27 m of dominantly mudstone with low permeability.

INTRODUCTION Construction of the 3,600,000 kilowatt Third Powerplant at Grand Coulee Dam started in late summer 1967 approximately one year after authorization by Congress. The project was made possible by a treaty with Canada providing for cooperative development of the Columbia River which was signed in 1961 and ratified in 1964. Description of the Work The existing Grand Coulee power complex consisted of a dam and two powerplants with a switchyard serving each plant, one on each bank of the river. See Fig. 1. The switching facilities were connected to transformers at the powerplants by overhead 230-kilovolt and 115-kilovolt tie circuit conductors. [ ]

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Eng) (Chemical) degree This paper details the formulation of a mathematical model for the simulation of a primary bioleach reactor, with specific reference to the leaching of pyrite. The model is based on the direct reaction mechanism, where the leaching of pyrite is said to occur via a two-step process. The process involves the formation of ferrous?iron through the chemical leaching of pyrite and subsequent bacterial oxidation of ferrous-iron back into ferric-iron. At steady state the rate of chemical leaching and bacterial oxidation are linked by the ratio of ferrous-iron to ferric-iron in solution. The extent of conversion of pyrite in the reactor system is described using the segregated flow model, with the exit age distribution of the solid phase being described by the Tanks-in-Series model. The final phase in model formulation involves the inclusion of steady state material balances on the bacteria and fluid phase components. The model is compared to pilot plant data and laboratory data for two different types of pyrite concentrates, with simulation results showing that the model is in good agreement with the data. Field measurements and theoretical studies have been made of pressure surges—momentary variations in fluid pressure—produced by movement of pipe in mud-filled boreholes. Pressure measurements were recorded by five pressure gauges located at various positions in the borehole. An important positive pressure peak was found to occur as the casing moved with maximum velocity. Important negative peaks were found as the casing was lifted from the slips and as brakes were applied to stop pipe movement. A rigorously formulated theory has successfully predicted the sequence and magnitudes of these positive and negative surges and has established a basis for understanding how they occur. Both the measurements and theory indicate that the most important pressure surge is usually due to viscous drag of the flowing mud. The theory of viscous-drag pressure surges has been approximated by simplified graphs and calculation procedures to facilitate ready use in field operations. Comparison of measured results with those predicted by the simplified theory shows that the magnitude of this surge can be predicted accurately. INTRODUCTION It is widely recognized that raising or lowering pipe in a fluid-filled borehole produces momentary variations in fluid pressure, commonly called pressure surges. Both negative (or "swabbing") surges and positive (or "fracturing") surges may occur. In 1934, Cannon1 measured the negative surges and showed that they could be large enough to cause flow of formation fluids into the well-bore and, in extreme cases, lead to blowout conditions. Later, Coins2 measured the positive surges associated with lowering pipe. His results and subsequent field operations strikingly demonstrated that pressure surges could be an important factor in some cases of lost returns. In addition, although the evidence is less clear than in the case of blowouts and lost returns, other investigators 3, 4 feel that pressure surges probably play a part in many instances of minor gas cutting, salt-water flow and other hole trouble. The importance of pressure surges in drilling operations led naturally to attempts to explain the physical causes, nature and magnitude of the surges. Cardwell5 was the first to publish a theory which allowed the quantitative prediction of momentary pressure variations. He assumed that the drilling fluid was a 300-cp Newtonian fluid in turbulent flow. Most field muds have a considerably lower viscosity and are generally believed to be Bingham plastic in nature.6 However, card-well's results were useful because they were presented in a form convenient for field use and, in some cases, gave a reasonably accurate predicted value for the maximum pressure surge. Subsequently, Ormsby7 published a more comprehensive theory of pressure surges. He discussed both laminar and turbulent flow and considered the theory of mud-bypass devices for reducing pressure surges. As a consequence of his more rigorous approach, his results were more accurate but more complex and difficult to use. Further, both Ormsby and Cardwell considered only the pressure surge arising from viscous drag of the moving mud. Clark later published idealized graphs of surges and presented equations for predicting their magnitudes. In addition to pressure variations arising from viscous drag, he considered those caused by inertial effects. His theory was in this respect more complete than those of Cardwell and Ormsby, although he did not discuss pressures due to breaking of the gel. Furthermore, his equations, while not exceptionally complicated, were too complex for ready use at a drilling location. One difficulty common to all three theories is that none was tested rigorously by direct comparison with measured pressure surges. Their accuracy, therefore, could, not be demonstrated. Further, the two theories based on most realistic assumptions (Ormsby and Clark) required the solution of one or more rather complex algebraic equations. The research described in this paper was undertaken to supplement that described and to overcome some of the difficulties noted. It seemed obvious that a fully satisfactory study of pressure surges should encompass three main phases. 1. A valid theory useful in all field situations must be developed. This theory must be based upon realistic assumptions, must be formulated rigorously and should lead to clear concepts whereby the nature of pressure surges can be easily understood. 2. The theory, however complex and involved, ultimately must be presented in simplified form for convenient field use. This may involve extensive machine computations and the use of figures and empirical equations. 3. The accuracy of the simplified equations must be established by comparing measured pressure surges with those predicted by the theory. These must agree both in their characteristic nature and in magnitude. 'This means that careful measurements of surges occurring in actual field operations must be made.

Minerals processing needs a step change in energy efficiency. While the search for new technology breakthroughs is important, huge gains are still available by better using existing research outcomes. This potential remains untapped due to a combination of organisational 'silos', inappropriate performance measurement, and poor science in some areas. It is time to see the elephant in the mill.

This report, the third in an annual series, outlines recent trends and developments in the minerals industry. Discussed are new methods, equipment, techniques, and systems used to more, effectively extract and process minerals and fuels. Environmental considerations, reduced ore grades, and the related increased quantities of material handled were the dominent concerns of the minerals industry in 1972. Productivity increased in most mineral commodities as equipment became more mobile, versatile, and sophisticated. Increasingly, equipment designs incorporated health and safety features. There was considerable interest in the field of energy and in pollution-free metallurgy processes.

Some 30 years ago exposure to dense-medium separation in South Africa, culminated in the adaptation of the process for the treatment of -0.5 mm fines. The first commercial plant at Greenside Colliery apparently operated for some 18 years. Three further plants followed, including one treating tin ore. It is gratifying to learn, therefore, that there is renewed interest. The objective of making the process easier to operate (?more practical??) is commendable but the cumbersome technical approach could be counter productive. Perhaps a brief outline of the original thinking might be helpful when analysing the problem.

This contribution describes rock mechanics features of the Davis Cavern at the former Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota, U.S.A. The mine is located in the northern Black Hills of South Dakota. In 2003 and again in 2008, the mine site was recommended for development as a national Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) in cooperation with the Sanford Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory under the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority (SDSTA). The original Davis Cavern was excavated about 9.1x16.8x9.7 m high (30x55x32 ft high) in 1965 (Mitchell 2009) at a depth of 1,478 m (4850 ft). The purpose of the cavern was to house apparatus for detecting solar neutrinos. The experiment ultimately proved successful and earned R. Davis a share of the 2002 Nobel Prize in physics. Recently, a new experiment (LUX=Large Underground Xenon detector for dark matter particles and WIMP's=weakly interacting massive particles) was proposed for the Davis Cavern that required an increase in height of 2.4 m (8 ft). For many years, the Homestake gold mine was the deepest operating mine in North America. Development extended to the 8000 Level (2,438 m). The mine closed in 2003. Pumps were shut off and the water level rose to the 4350 Level, about 150 m (500 ft) above the Davis Cavern. Some six years later after selection for DUSEL proposal development by the National Science Foundation (NSF), access to the 4850 Level and the Davis Cavern was regained. Pumping has lowered the water level to well below the cavern floor. Figure 1 shows the layout and location of the Davis Cavern (Cavity). Detector tank, supporting steel, and so forth were subsequently removed. The cavern was re-supported and new access was developed. By August, 2010, 13,000 ft3 had been removed during enlargement and renovation of the Davis Cavern. Figure 2 shows the detector tank under construction in 1965.

SPONGE IRON has been defined as the metallic product formed by the reduction (removal of combined oxygen) of iron ore or other iron oxides at temperatures below the fusion point of iron. This product probably derived the name "sponge iron" from its porous nature. When the reduction proceeds at slightly higher temperatures and the particles of metal weld together or finally even melt to yield pellets or balls that lack the porosity and low-density characteristic of sponge iron, the product might more correctly be called "direct iron."

The petroleum industry continued to be the most important mineral activity in Bahrain during 1978-79. Revenues generated by the petroleum sector increased from $378 million' in 1977 to an estimated $419 million in 1978 and approximately $522.5 million in 1979, despite decreasing production over the 2 year period. There were two oilfields that produced revenues for Bahrain, the Awali oilfield, the nation's only onshore producer, and the Abu Sa'fah oilfield, located in the Persian Gulf, north of Bahrain, The Await oilfield has been decreasing output from a high of 27,973,000 barrels in 1970 to 19,000,000 barrels in 1979. Bahrain shared the revenues from the Abu Sa'fah oilfield with Saudi Arabia, as settlement of an ownership dispute. For the first time, in 1978, revenues from the Abu Sa'fah oilfield represented over 50% of the total receipts from the petroleum sector. The years 1978-79 saw the gradual takeover of the Bahrain Petroleum Co. (Bapco), formerly a subsidiary of the California Texas Petroleum Co. (Caltex), by the Government-owned Bahrain National Oil Co. (Banoco). By yearend 1978, Banoco owned 60% of Bapco, and Caltex the remaining 40%. The Government-owned company controlled exploration concessions, managed domestic marketing of petroleum products, and controlled natural gas production and marketing. On December 15, 1979, the Bahrain Government completed full takeover of the Bapco operations. Bapco will continue to own and operate the 250,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery located near Sitrah, as well as handle foreign marketing of petroleum products.
