A method for measuring the spark-shower radiance of metals when abraded on a grinding wheel was developed by the Bureau of Mines for evaluating the sparking tendency of metals. The radiance was measured in units of emissive power per solid angle per area of the detector. Over 100 metals were tested and rated relative to commercially pure iron. The metals tested included elemental metals, iron binary and ternary alloys, iron-carbon ternary alloys, commercial steels, nonferrous alloys, and a few hard-metal compounds. Some alloys were synthesized; others were obtained commercially. Alloys that possessed good strength properties were emphasized for selection. The results indicate that the spark-shower radiance of plain carbon steels and carbon alloy steels was greater than that of pure iron. Certain elements, particularly vanadium and chromium, reduced the sparking tendency of iron. Stainless steels and particularly nickel alloys displayed low spark-shower radiance. Some metallic elements had much lower radiance than iron; others, much greater. Plain carbon steels, heat treated to a variety of hardnesses, gave radiance values that generally increased with increasing hardness. The effect on sparking tendency of an increase in hardness of an alloy steel was studied. The sparking tendency increased with an increase in hardness to a maximum, then decreased with a further increase in hardness.

The Stawell Goldfield, the westernmost of the main Victorian fields, has produced over a million and a quarter ounces of gold from one and three-quarter million tons of ore. The lodes are quartz reefs and sulphide bodies occurring in sediments of lower Ordovician or upper Cambrian age. The lodes are confined to a relatively narrow suite of weak rocks lying between stronger ones above and below and there is a definite relationship between fold structure, pitch and strength of folding and ore.LOCATION HISTORY AND PAST PRODUCTIONThe town of Stawell, situated 150 miles north-westerly from Melbourne on the main railway and road to Adelaide, is the most westerly of the main gold areas of Victoria. Alluvial gold was found at Pleasant Creek (now Stawell West) in 1853 and the usual "rush" followed. Numerous alluvial leads, some surface, others buried under up to 100 ft. of Tertiary sediments were worked. The alluvial gold was soon exhausted, but in 1857 gold-bearing reefs were found on the slopes of a prominent ridge on the northern edgeof the present town. Early reef mining was by small working parties mining to shallow depths only and treating their ore at public crushing plants. Some of the early returns were very high grade. The next stage was the amalgamation of claims and the formation of companies, with their own treatment plants. This stage continued till the last mine closed in 1921. These companies had, by present standards, small holdings and far too many shafts were sunk, resulting in less efficient prospecting and operation.Since 1921 there have been one or two small scale attempts to revive mining but without success. OXYFINESTM is an oxyfuel-based concept for in-plant recycling. It enables the possibility of fines, dust, sludge (without any drying step) and other by-products generated by the steel- and metal-producing industries to be recycled directly back into existing processes or a separate on-site unit. The results from a full-scale installation (20 000 t/a) and pilot-scale trials with dry and wet materials in the steel and ferroalloy industries are presented. The latter include materials arising from ferrosilicon, ferrochrome and silicon manganese production. The concept not only provides a solution to the problems associated with dust and sludge generated in metal production, it also turns these materials into a low-cost raw material which is useful for the same production process, thus replacing some of the raw material input. If required, it could also be used, possibly as an intermediate solution, to convert the dust or sludge into an inert material with a suitable shape. Under some conditions, a directly saleable product could also be obtained. The paper reviews this technology, its status and benefits as wells as its possibilities with regard to application in ferroalloy production. Keywords: recycling, fines, dust, sludge, ferroalloys

Deer Island is the site of the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) wastewater treatment plant which, when completed in 1999, will serve 43 cities and towns in central eastern Massachusetts. Deer Island is located in the Boston Harbor, as shown on Figure 1. The existing wastewater treatment plant on Deer Island is being upgraded to include secondary treatment to comply with Federal require­ments. The new treatment facilities will process an average of 455 million gallons of sewage per day; total capacity will be about one billion gallons per day. The new treatment facilities will cover virtually the entire island. [ ]

The variation of the spectral emissivity of osmium and ruthenium with temperature can be expressed by the following relations: DURING a study of the sintering characteristics of osmium and ruthenium, discrepancies in the previously accepted melting points of the metals were noted. The melting temperatures had not been measured at the time of the work, but were estimated in the literature as 2700°C for osmium and 2450°C for ruthenium.' A recent investigation by Baird2 has shown the melting temperatures of osmium and ruthenium are 3000" and 2250° C, respectively. In the present work, osmium bars sintered at temperatures as high as 2900° C showed no evidence of melting, whereas ruthenium showed definite evidence of melting at temperatures as low as 2250°C. In view of the apparent discrepancies, the melting temperatures of both metals were determined. The spectral emissivities of both metals were determined as an aid to studies of the sintering characteristics of these metals. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES The materials used in these studies were metal powders supplied by Englehard Industries, Inc., through the courtesy of The International Nickel Co. Analytical data from three laboratories, although not in complete agreement as to the purity of the material or the major impurity elements, indicated that the maximum impurity levels were 0.5 and 1.0 wt pct in osmium and ruthenium, respectively. The metal powders were pressed to 1/4 by 1/4 by 6-in. bars at 20Tsi using carbon tetrachloride as a lubricant. The pressed bars were presintered 1 hr at 1200°C after heating 1 hr at 400°C. The presintered densities of the several bars of the metals ranged from 65 to 80 pct of ideal density. Specimens were self-resistance heated in a vacuum sintering bell. Temperatures were measured with an L&N, disappearing filament optical pyrometer. True temperatures were read at the base of an 0.30-in.-diam, 0.150-in. deep hole drilled into the center of a presintered bar. Apparent temperatures were read from the surface of the bar adjacent to the hole. MELTING POINT DETERMINATION The melting temperature of the metals was determined as the temperature at which a slight additional increase in current through the specimen resulted in a reduced temperature at the base of the hole. The United States Geological Survey has estimated 1 that the State of Washington contains 11,412,000,000 tons of bituminous coal and 52,442,000,000 tons of subbituminous coal, in beds more than 14 inches thick. As the present rate of production is about 4,000,000 tons a year, Washington apparently contains coal enough to supply Pacific coast markets for many years. The character of the coal beds of Washington renders the production of clean coal very difficult, and a considerable proportion of the output is washed before it is marketed. In 1915 Washington ranked fifth among the States in the amount of coal washed, though only twentieth in total output. In that year 37.9 per cent of the coal produced in the State was treated in surface cleaning plants. On account of extensive folding and faulting of the coal measures, mining in Washington presents many difficulties; therefore a description of the methods employed at some of the mines may be useful in planning operations in other regions, and is presented in this bulletin. The coals of Washington differ in quality, ranging from true lignites in Cowlitz County in the southern part of the State to anthracites in the Mount Baker district of Whatcom County, in the north~ rn part. Most of the output consists of subbituminous and bituminous coals, the latter including both coking and noncoking varieties. Analyses of the coals of the State and descriptions of the beds from which the samples were taken have been printed in publications of the United States Bureau of Mines.2 Details of coal beds and analyses of the coals of King, Kittitas, and Pierce Counties have also been published by the Washington Geological Survey; 3 and most of the coal beds of the State are described in some detail in a bulletin of the United States Geological Survey.4 In 1918 mining was in progress at 72 mines in the State 4a; 46 of these mines each employed more than 10 men underground. These mines were distributed as follows: Thurston County, 1; Lewis County, 7; Kittitas County, 14; King County, 16; Pierce County, 6; Skagit County, 1; and Whatcom County, 1. During that year a total of 5,847 men were employed, 4,172 underground and 1,675 on the surface. The average number of days worked in the State was 275, and the average yearly output per man was 706 tons. Coke is made only in Pierce County by four companies, which have a total of 341 beehive ovens. In 1918 they produced 93,699 tons of coke. Up to 1919 mining machines were little used in the State. In 1917 only 6.61 per cent of the coal :produced was undercut by machines. In that year 58.95 per cent of the coal was mined by hand, and 34.44 per cent was shot off the solid. The explosives used were as follows: Black powder, 36.6 per cent; dynamite, 38.l per cent; and permissible, 25.3 per cent. The State of Washington is divided naturally into two parts by the Cascade Mountains which extend north and south somewhat west of the middle of the State. The coal areas east of the range will hereafter be referred to as eastern Washington-though nearly all of it is west of the middle of the State-and that on the west side as western Washington. The geographical distribution of the coal fields is shown in Plate I. Exploration of the State has not been exhaustive enough to preclude the possibility of discovering, besides the foregoing, other districts that contain deposits of coal in commercial quantities.

"The risk management objective of the AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has seldom been systematically investigated in the literature up to the authors’ knowledge. Risk is defined in the Australian Standard on Risk Management (AS/NZS 4360:2004), as “the chance of something happening that will have an impact on objectives”. The simplified economic analysis performed in this paper has lead to define “something happening” as measurement non-representativity and “impact on objectives” as NSR loss from the optimal NSR. This has pinpointed a missing link being the establishment of a relation between NSR in flotation plants and measurement representativity. The proposed framework, referred to as the total cost of representativity, answers the previously unanswered question of how much accuracy/reproducibility is fit for purpose in a given flotation plant. Authors readily acknowledge that it is way easier to assess the cost of accuracy/reproducibility than the cost of inaccuracy/irreproducibility. However, this exercise not only answers previously unanswered questions but also establishes an essential link with operational excellence. This paper exposes why such operational excellence could neither be attained nor proved without a state of the art metal accounting system. This should impact not only how metal accounting systems are audited/designed/refactored, but also how flotation plants are designed.IntroductionBecause representative metal accounting is a vital source of information for the financial accounts of a mining/metallurgical company, the need for a code on metal accounting was recognized in 2001 and a team was formed in 2003, under the sponsorship of several major mining houses, to produce such a code. Soil and Materials Engineers, Inc. (SME) has utilized drilled cast-in-place (D-CIP) piles on a number of projects in the midwest. These foundation systems have typically consisted of drilling an 8 to 9-inch diameter borehole with a rotary type drill rig or driving a casing with a small hammer. A structural steel member is installed in the center of the excavated space, and the borehole or casing is grouted to complete the installation of the D-CIP pile. This type of piling system has also been called: mini-pile, micro-pile, or drilled-in pier. The capacity of these piles varies depending upon subsurface conditions, as well as the structural capacity of the pile. The structural capacity can be modified based on the size and yield strength of the structural steel member. SME has used the D-CIP piles for underpinning of lightly-loaded structures for a number of years. Steel brackets can be welded to the structural steel member in the center of these piles, and the bracket extended underneath existing foundations to provide proper foundation support. D-CIP piles have also been used for new construction where access was limited. Recently, SME had the opportunity of providing design as well as construction monitoring services for a unique project where these piles were used, but at much higher capacity. The project involved adding seven additional floors on top of a five-story building (total of 12 stories). New columns were extended through the existing building to support the new floors. Access to construct foundations was available to one level of underground parking beneath the structure, as well as to a basement area. Access required equipment to travel through a 3-foot wide hallway. A special duplex drilling machine was used to access the foundation locations and to install the piles in a limited headroom condition. Eight-inch diameter D-CIP piles were extended to a depth of approximately 40 to 50 feet below grade and socketed into a dense clay till or sandstone, and No. 18 or No. 20 threaded bars were installed in the center of these piles. The design pile capacity was as high as 190 kips and were verified by a compression load test. The load test was performed with limited access and headroom. These piles were installed by Spencer White and Prentis Foundation Corporation (SWP). For conditions where rock or hard soils are encountered at reasonable depths, D-CIP piles can provide working load capacities comparable to larger driven steel piles. The ability of the equipment to access very restricted areas, combined with the high capacities results in a very attractive solution to a number of difficult foundation problems.

To accommodate larger double-stack rail cars through a tunnel, the existing active tracks were to be lowered. The tunnel is an elliptical, horseshoe-shape with concrete base support, removal of which would jeopardize the tunnel integrity, particularly since the soils beneath part of the tunnel floor included soft, saturated silt overlying rock. Grouted bar anchors combined with a SuperJet soilcrete strut replaced the existing support in situ prior to floor lowering. Close cooperation and detailed timely engineering support provided a quality project. Project design and construction, ground improvement methods, and the performance of the work are described.

The Haldane gas-analysis apparatus used by the Bureau of Mines is patterned after the device developed by Haldane 4/ and differs from it only in structural modifications that have been added to facilitate operation and simplify construction. The apparatus was developed to permit determination of carbon dioxide, combustible gases, and oxygen with a degree of accuracy not attainable with apparatus of the types ordinarily used for the analysis of fuel gases, flue gases, and similar mixtures. The Haldane apparatus is used by the Bureau of Mines chiefly in the analysis of air samples collected in coal and metal mines and other underground workings and is applied also in the analysis of many other types of gas mixtures when accurate determination of certain constituents is desired.

The development of the modern State and the growth of capitalism involves a complex process of interaction between cross-cutting structural dimension: first between politics and economics and, second, between market and hierarchy. Central to such developments are political economies of scale. Mineral specialization in the Third World developed within the framework of an international extension on oligopolistic structure of the advanced capitalist economies of Western Europe and North America. Up to the late 1960s, the world mineral and metallurgical industry was closely controlled by a handful of Western mining and industrial groups. To the extent that, foreign control of the mining sector was seen in the Third World producing countries both as the essence of foreign domination and as its major symbol. In some newly industrializing countries, the State took a more direct role in tying the economy and society together. Central to this process was the growth of large-scale finance capital. From early 1959to the mid-1970s, metal consumption in industrial countries expanded well beyond their domestic mineral endowments. And a free access to Third World minerals was a major element of the economic dynamism of these countries throughout that period. With the change in the characteristics of international investment, Africa has become less important as an outlet for capital exports of European countries. Actually, the African continent now receives only a very minor share of direct foreign investments of Western enterprises. International political economy is concerned first of all with the relationship between the economic and political domains across territorial boundaries. Second, attention should be drawn to the role of the State as the focus of decision-making in a system of competitive States, that is in turn, interdependent with a trans-national market economy in which mining and metallurgy are essential activities that affect the politics of the State, and how this in turn, rebounds on the politics of the international system. Understanding the role of the State must go beyond the glib pronouncements on the ?national interest?. How, and whose interest, the ?national interest? is determined, is precisely the problem. This implies a third theoretical problem that must be addressed: the linkage between the domestic and international domains (or levels of analysis), given that political-economic processes clearly cut across the lines of political decision-making constituted by the institutional structures of the State. Situating the State and economic interests within this vast ?state-society? complex that we call the global order will be a crucial problem for any theoretical approach that involves mining and metallurgy.

Mintek and BacTech have joined forces to provide the metallurgical industry with bacterial-oxidation processes for the treatment of sulphide ores. The processes are aimed at both refractory gold-bearing and base-metal concentrates. Previously, BacTech had commercially implemented the refractory gold process at the Youanmi Gold Mine in Western Australia. More recently, the process has been incorporated in the Sulphide Treatment Plant at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine in Tasmania, Australia. In addition, Mintek and BacTech have recently signed an agreement with the Laizhou Gold Metallurgy Plant in China?s Shandong Province, which will see the third commercial realization of the technology for refractory gold. Development of the base-metal technology is the subject of several papers in the proceedings of this colloquium. The implementation of the refractory gold technology at Beaconsfield is discussed in detail. Some important aspects that are covered include: ?Test work, and the choice of bacterial culture ?Process design choices, and the advantages of the Mintek-BacTech process ?Inoculum build-up ?Plant commissioning ?Plant performance. Besides the Laizhou project, Mintek and BacTech are currently investigating several other commercial prospects for the technology. These include the use of the technology for a gold-copper deposit, where the production of both gold and copper is envisaged.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health1 (NIOSH), together with employees from The Doe Run Company, are monitoring and evaluating the stability of a pillar retreat section at the Fletcher Mine, a lead/zinc, room-and-pillar mine near Bunker, MO. Cemented rockfill is being used to provide roof support as high-grade, remnant ore pillars are mined. Earth pressure cells and deformation meters placed in backfill panel pillars monitor stress change and vertical deformation, respectively, as nearby ore-bearing pillars are extracted. Similarly, biaxial stressmeters and borehole extensometers are used to monitor mining-induced stress change and deformation, respectively, in long-term support pillars. Data from these instruments indicate that when ore-bearing pillars were mined, stress was redistributed from support pillars to a backfill panel pillar. The data also indicate that the backfill and support pillars have remained stable for two years after pillar extraction was completed in the area. This research demonstrates the importance of using reliable instruments to document the geomechanical behavior of pillars and backfill. Gaining a better understanding of roof support and stress redistribution mechanisms is a fundamental part of NIOSH's goal to reduce and/or predict rockfalls, which are still among the leading causes of injuries in metal/nonmetal underground mines.

This report on the properties of aviation gasolines and aviation jet fuels produced in the United States during 1955 was made under a co-operative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. Analytical data are presented for 116 samples of aviation gasoline and for 38 samples of aviation jet fuel. The analyses were made on samples typical of the manufacturers' 1955 production in their laboratories and the results submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. The products of 20 manufacturers of aviation gasolines and of 16 producers of aviation jet fuels are represented.

During mining, crushing and handling the size of iron ore lumps decreases. Key factors in determining the amount and size of fines that are produced are the mechanical properties of the ore. In a continuation of earlier work on the same ores the mechanical properties of three Australian iron ores from Yandi, Koolan and Mt. Whaleback were determined. In particular, fracture toughness was investigated in greater detail by examining its relationship to crack length using the compact tension test. The elastic modulus and strength of the ores were also determined in flexure and compression. The results were interpreted using Weibull statistics, enabling the ores to be ranked according to strength and elastic modulus. These results, together with data on the mechanical response of the ores to stress and observations concerning the effect of mineralogy on cracking, provide a coherent understanding of the mechanisms involved when the ores fracture

Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use block cave mining method which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment and recover the ore. It was also the first hard rock mine to use hydraulic fracturing, in conjunction with CSIRO, to promote caving of E26 Lift 1. The technique was later used on E26 Lift 2 wedge and E48 prior to undercutting.Northparkes production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and E26SLC. The E48 block cave contains economic ore to the north and south of the current cave footprint. To recover this ore the footprint has been extended on the north and south with two extraction drives and one extraction drive, respectively. Modelling of cavability above the additional drives indicated that the cave would not readily propagate to a sufficient height of draw to mobilise the ore and tended to arch over into the existing cave. To address the modelling results and to reduce the risk of the project, rock mass preconditioning was adopted.This fracturing campaign was performed from surface drill holes adjacent the subsidence zone angled to intersect the higher grade and higher elevation ore zones.Optical televiewer surveys, run prior to fracturing, picked intervals and fault zones to be avoided. Holes were resurveyed post-fracturing to detect newly created fractures and as a measure of success of the program.During fracturing operations water and gel fractures were run at varying depths and pumping pressure was logged for each fracture. The mine seismic system monitored significant events and dye in the fluids utilised for tracking water inflow locations during underground inspections.Towards the end of the project, guar fibres from gel were detected within the mill circuit and required treatment to resume optimum processing.CITATION:Webster, S, Snyman, L and Samosir, J, 2016. The equilibrium nitrogen solubility in the CaO-SiO2system was studied by a slag-gas equilibration technique, in graphite crucibles at 1823K under a CO-N2 atmosphere. The nitrogen content of the slags was determined by the Kjeldahl method. A reliable technique was used to obtain an initial nitrogen content in the master slags, from the addition and pre-melting of silicon nitride. Reduction of silica by graphite was found to occur during the equilibration experiments, resulting in compositional changes of the slags. The results were extrapolated to equilibrium by kinetic evaluation of the data. The nitrogen solubility showed good agreement with the result of Suito and Sano, while Fruehan?s results were lower. However, the results of the present study do not support the maximum nitrogen solubility values found by Sano.
