Much effort over the years has been put into the task of devising parameters which adequately assess the metallurgical efficiency of mineral processmg operations. One of the most celebrated of these methods is the so-called "release analysis" method of Dell (1953) which tackles the problem in terms of an ideal separation based on sequential retreatment of the products and tails of a given separation process. Other methods have also been proposed by Jowett (1969) and by Holland-Batt (1971 ). While these procedures are appropriate to multi-component mineralogical separations, they perhaps do not lend themselves to the much more simple two-component systems encountered in coal preparation. However Dell (1962) has suggested the use of the term "specific profit" in coal preparation in order to assess the conditions that give maximum economic gain. Specific profit is derived from data relating washability data with equipment performance and operating costs. The procedure for using this criterion for comparative purposes is therefore somewhat cumbersome as is illustrated by its lack of widespread acceptance in the coal preparation literature.In contrast, an efficiency index, E, which is both simple and meaningful from the utilitarian standpoint, has been proposed by Tsiperovich and Evtushenko (1959a). This index is defined by the relation, E = Yield X Tailings ash/Product ash (1) A cursory examination of this parameter shows that it increases when yield and tailings ash increase and also when product ash decreases; all of which are desirable circumstances in coal cleaning operations.Further, it will be shown that slight variations in operation are amplified by this function which makes comparisons simple and direct.While the use of this index is quite extensive in the Soviet coal preparation literature for some reason it has not received wide usag~ elsewhere.

The design of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill based comminution circuits for the treatment of competent ores, similar to those at Geita and Boddington, involves the same process of sample selection, test work, data analysis and data modelling/interpretation as that used for 'average' competency ores. However, over the past couple of years a number of issues have arisen that are common to the design of circuits for the comminution of 'highly' competent ores. The impact of these issues on project viability is generally more pronounced when treating hard ores than average to soft ores due to the greater impact on capital and operating costs. The issues encountered have included: standard test procedures have been modified; test equipment has worn or been damaged; different procedures yield different data and varying interpretation; and modelling and empirical calculations have been based on poor benchmarks, or used incorrectly in the case of JKSimMet, yielding misleading outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to present, discuss and clarify some of the issues associated with conducting test work and designing comminution circuits for the treatment of 'highly' competent ores in order to reduce thelevel of conflict arising from interpretation and application of test work data. Specifically, the issues associated with the bond crushing (impact) and rod work indices measurement, the various SAG mill specific energy tests, and the interpretation of the resulting data will be discussed in the context of case studies.

Detailed investigations have been conducted into 21 rockbursts which caused damage to excavations in deep South African gold mines, in many instances resulting in the death or serious injury of workers. The objective of this study is to determine the principal factors controlling the severity and distribution of damage, so that strategies to reduce the hazard of rockbursts may be developed. It was found that the source mechanism is often controlled by the mine layout, and regional structures such as faults and dykes; while local rock conditions and support systems strongly influence the location and severity of damage. In the short term the most important lever for reducing the rockburst hazard is the effective implementation of existing rock engineering knowledge and technology.

"INTRODUCTIONThe renaissance in gold and silver recovery technology has continued to unfold and it is appropriate to review some of the useful new technologies as well as try to identify some of the industry's future needs and frontiers.The remarkable strengthening in the US dollar has resulted in a relatively low gold price in US Dollars of around $310/oz at the time of writing and silver at $6.25/oz. This general softening in the dollar prices and the recent confusion as to environmental compatibility of cyanidation tailings and effluents, has led to a slowdown in announcements of new operations. Another reason for the slackening off in the USA is that in the past few years a large part of the capital has come from oi I and gas companies that now seem to be losing interest in mineral ventures, and foreign investors for whom the dollar is becoming out of reach. In the author's opinion this represents an unprecedented window of opportunity.Elsewhere in the world where local currencies have weakened, the price of gold is at or close to its all time high.For example, in South African Rands, the gold price was R571.00/oz when the rand was US$1.47 and the gold price reached US$800. Now at US $309/oz and with the Rand at US$0.51 = Rl .00, the local gold price is R600. The price of si Iver in Mexican pesos is not much less than it was when silver reached US$50/oz. Gold, and silver prices in local currencies outside North America are still buovant and at levels where additional investment in new projects is more encouraging.Even in Canada where the dollar is worth about US$0. 75, this provides a smaller but significant cushion compared with US operations. Considering the present strength of the US dollar and even the Canadian dollar relative to many other gold producing countries, there should be significant investment opportunities at today's prices. Mining companies have started to descend on Brazil, for example, where in a matter of just a few years annual gold production has increased from 10 to 70 tons. In South Africa, a Canadian company backed by Swiss financing has been able to take over a Witwatersrand gold mining operation and is installing a huge new tailin9s retreatment plant to process about 1 million tons per month of tailings."

"The exploration of seamounts south of the Azores during the EMEPC/Açores/G3/2007 campaign allowed for the collection of 30 Fe-Mn crusts from the Atlantis, Great Meteor, Small Hyeres, Irving and Plato seamounts, as well as from the East Azores Fracture Zone. These were the first samples of Fe-Mn crusts studied from these seamounts. The Fe-Mn crusts were analyzed using multiple analytical methods.The crusts are fairly homogeneous, showing typical textures for this type of occurrences. The Fe/Mn ratio, patterns and concentrations in rare earth elements, and the great homogeneity of the crusts lead to the conclusion that they have a hydrogenetic origin, precipitating directly from seawater. Although the content in Fe and Mn of the crusts is consistent with data available for the Atlantic, the mean concentration of Co is comparable to the average values for the Pacific. Cu and Ni show lower values than the ones known for the Pacific."

The San Vicente Pipeline Tunnel Project involves the construction of an 8.5-foot-diameter water pipeline in an 11 mile tunnel in San Diego, California. The tunnel is located in extremely variable geologic conditions of strong granitic and volcanic rocks, weak sedimentary rocks, abrasive conglomerates, and mixed face conditions. One reach of the tunnel is a 5,200-foot mixed face reach that includes Friars Formation Conglomerate overlying granitic rock. Due to the variable ground conditions in this reach, the use of a TBM was deemed too risky and the contract documents required drill-and-blast and hand mining methods. Although it was not required, the contractor elected to construct this reach using NATM methods. This paper describes the geology of the 5,200-foot mixed-face reach, the design evaluation, and the construction challenges faced on this project.

It was three years ago when the “storm of the century” had taken a firm grip over the Pacific West Coast and inland areas. At the Big Sky ski resort in Montana on Christmas morning two ski patrollers set out to perform an explosives “hand charge” avalanche control mission that would see only one return. It has been difficult to determine exactly what happened. Investigators do know that there were three separate and consecutive attempts to light a safety fuse, when it had apparently been burning since the first attempt. Time ran out after the third attempt. Although this accident has had a profound impact on North American avalanche control programs, I am sure it pales in contrast to the shock and grief experienced by family members who lost a loved one.

THE title of this paper, I understand, was suggested by professional mining engineers as an opportunity for someone to pose problems rather than to offer solutions for them, but the paper will merely attempt to pose some of the production problems of the mineral aggregates industry in such manner as to create professional interest in their solution by the mining engineer, geologist, geochemist and the metallurgical engineer versed in mineral-dressing technique. DEFINITION OF MINERAL AGGREGATES "Mineral aggregates" may be defined as fragments of any rock or mineral used to supply bulk or volume or substance for a given purpose. For example, mineral aggregates are used in portland-cement concrete to provide bulk with the expenditure of the least feasible amount of cement binder. Mineral aggregates are used without portland cement or bituminous binder in highway and railway roadbeds to provide substance, to carry loads. Mineral aggregates are used in filters for water and sewage, to provide substance for the liquid to trickle through. These are only a few typical uses of mineral aggregates. For all these uses, strength, toughness, resistance to abrasion, and durability are usually prime requisites; so, while theoretically mineral aggregates may be of any mineral composition, what really is desired is a mineral composition as nearly inert under the conditions of use as anything of earthly origin can be. EXPLORATION AND POSSIBILITIES OF DEVELOPMENT The distribution of deposits of mineral aggregate is universal, since almost any part of the earth's crust can be used; even the top soil is sometimes used in stabilized surfacing for highways or airport runways. Nevertheless there is ample opportunity for exercise of the talents of the mining engineer and the geologist in finding the particular deposit that will be most economical to develop, keeping in mind such considerations as: (1) quality and mineralogical characteristics of the material; (2) size and permanency of the market; (3) final cost of opening and development of the deposit; (4) selection of location of plant; (5) methods and costs of distribution of the product in comparison with both present and possible future competition; (6) selection of the proper type of operating equipment; (7) estimation of probable waste products and their disposal. These are typical but there are other considerations also. Because profit margins are far smaller than in any comparable mining operation, it is all the more logical to assume that a higher degree of expert knowledge is desirable to make a success of a mineral-aggregates business. Solvent extraction of Cu from acidic leach, using an oxime extractant, e.g. LIX 984 or Acorga is a well-known and establishedprocess. As the process advances, Cu is extracted to the solvent and is replaced by H+in the aqueous phase. At high acidity the distribution coefficient of Cu between the solvent and the aqueous phase decreases, and eventually a relatively high concentration of Cu remains in the raffinate, regardless of the number of equilibrium stages. In many processes this phenomenon is immaterial, as the raffinate returns to the leaching and no copper is lost. But when the copper raffinate is used for processing of additional metals, minimal concentration of Cu in the raffinate is essential for an effective process. The recommended process includes three steps: SX-1?standard extraction of Cu with oxime. The resulting raffinate contains about 6?8 g/lCu and 50 g/lH2SO4. SX-N?Extraction of most of the acid into an amine-based solvent, and stripping it with a base, e.g. aqueous ammonia, caustic, Na2CO3etc. The extraction removes no metals, but decreases the concentration of acid from 50 to10 g/l. SX-2?Extraction of the neutralized solution once more with oxime, to remove the residual copper. Such a process enables one to get down to 100?150 ppm Cu in the final raffinate. This process was developed and tested in the R&D facility at Chambishi Metals plc, by a joint team of Chambishi & Bateman, using Cognis LIX 984N and real solutions from the plant. In the laboratory the equilibrium isotherms for SX-1, SX-2 and the neutralization were developed. Computer simulation of the results showed that the optimal configuration is two stages for both extraction and stripping for SX-1. For SX2, 2?3 stages of extraction and two stages of stripping are needed. The stripping stages may be common to both SX-1 and SX-2. The neutralization of SX1 raffinate was tested both by conventional precipitation with lime and by extraction with alamine-based solvent extraction and stripping with a solution of 10% NaOH. For the SX-N only one stage was needed for both the extraction and stripping. The bench scale pilot plant was run for both SX-1 and SX-2. The results were very similar to the simulated ones, and the configuration of 2E2S for SX-1 and 3E2S for SX 2 delivered the required raffinate with less than 150 ppm Cu.

Reflected light microscopy was used to study the mineralogy and textures of experimental reactions of a nickel concentrate with a slag. Such an interaction is an important step in the bath smelting of nickel sulfide concentrate. Concentrate particles in the central portions of the pellets are rounded and develop vermicular SO2 gas porosity. In the outer portions of the pellets, the original minerals of the concentrate, pyrrhotite, pentlandite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and violarite have agglomerated and reacted to form two intergrown phases: 1) pyrrhotite solid solution (Fe0.75Ni0.18Cu0.01S) and pentlandite solid solution (Fe0.58Ni0.51Cu0.03S). Magnetite formed euhedral crystals, skeletal crystals, and dendrites at the margins of the matte. Prismatic ferrohypersthene and octahedral Mg-Al-Fe spinel crystals and dendrites are present in the glassy slag.

The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) amended the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 to improve the safety of mines. The MINER Act established a Technical Study Panel (the Panel) to provide independent scientific and engineering review and recommendations with respect to the utilization of belt air and the composition and fire retardant materials in underground coal mining (1). Because frictional heating is a common cause of belt fires, the Panel recommended that the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) evaluate the drum friction test to determine if such a test would contribute to conveyor belt safety beyond that provided by the Belt Evaluation Laboratory Test (BELT). This paper compares the results of the drum friction test to results from the BELT and large-scale tests for six different conveyor belts. The results are used to evaluate the drum friction test as a method to determine the fire resistance of conveyor belts.

Finite element models were generated of two submerged arc furnaces of different geometries. A 48MW circular furnace and a 68MW 6-in-line rectangular furnace were studied. The electrodes, raw material, slag and molten metal were included in the model. ANSYS/Multiphysics was used to predict the current density distribution in the electrodes, raw material, slag and molten metal as a result of the three phase AC current. The effect of the electrode immersion on the current path was studied. The ?proximity effect? caused a pronounced asymmetry in the electrode currents in the circular furnace, whilst the electrode currents in the rectangular furnace exhibited radial symmetry. The current distribution in the melt in both furnaces indicated that the bulk of the current flows between phases. The current density is greatest between electrodes. Results were compared to qualitatively similar published work, operating experience and results of furnace dig-outs.

The author contends that geoscience is presently under-utilised in the rock fragmentation by blasting process. Before we can set standards in this area, the following is required: mine geologists need to gain a better understanding of the blasting process and the blasting team needs to obtain a better appreciation of geology. Both groups need to be informed of what can be done to improve blasting outcomes, why it is necessary and how it can be achieved. By working closely together, both the geoscience toolkits and blasting expertise can be applied and focused on priority blast sensitive issues, with potential to improve mine economics and safety. Finally, and ideally, mine geologists need to take a leadership role in raw rock mass data collection and data management, and invited to take an active role in rock mass related behaviour data collection, integration and presentation.This paper attempts to provide insight into all these prerequisites for setting a new standard for collaboration and mutual learning in this strategic opportunity area. The potential for blasting to leverage downstream processes is highlighted. Blasting objectives and blast design principles are introduced along with the required rock mass related inputs. Some hazardous geological materials and environmental conditions are described, along with how they can affect operational complexity.Four case examples are used to illustrate the need for closer liaison between geology and blasting professionals. The first related to grade control blasting, aims to demonstrate how a blasting geology approach can add significant value. Case example two demonstrates how geological models and bench face analysis can assist with fragment control. The third and fourth case examples involve an overview of two case studies where timely geological and geotechnical knowledge input and intervention into blasting activities may have reduced losses due to blast initiated open pit slope collapses.CITATION:Little, T N, 2017. The Minataur? Process (Mintek Alternative Technology for Au Refining) is a novel route for the production of high-purity gold using solvent extraction. Following the successful demonstration of the process on a pilot-plant scale, a full-scale 24 t/a production plant has been commissioned at Harmony Gold Mine in Virginia, Free State. The commercial implementation of this process represents not only a significant advance in gold-refining technology, but may be instrumental in initiating important changes in the legislation regulating the marketing of gold in South Africa. Gold of either 99.99% or 99.999% purity can be produced from intermediate process products having a wide range of gold contents. The process comprises oxidative leaching of the solid feed, followed by selective solvent extraction of the gold from the leach liquor to reject impurities, and precipitation of high-purity gold powder. This paper outlines the process, presents selected results of two pilot-plant trials in which 5 kg/d of high-purity gold was produced from silver-refining anode slime and gold-electrowinning cathode sludge, and provides some details of the cost benefits.

The extension of the commuter railway system (S-Bahn) in Leipzig, Germany willrequire the construction of an underground line crossing the downtown area of thecity to tie the Bavarian Station in the South to the Main-Station in the North. The City-Tunnel-Leipzig is currently one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe. This system extension will have a length of approximately five kilometers. 3.9 kilometers of that length are currently being constructed using either cut & cover construction or tunnelingmethods. The design and construction of this project currently is and will continue facing very significant challenging urban and demanding geotechnical conditions.

Australia is the world's leading producer and exporter of mineral sands. Despite increased production from some other countries in recent years, Australia maintained its No.1 position in 1988 among world producers of mineral sands concentrates. Production of the titanium minerals -- ruffle, ilmenite and leucoxene, as well as synthetic ruffle -- by the seven companies currently comprising the Australian industry increased in 1988 in response to continuing strong demand for feedstock by the pigment industry. Production of co-product zircon remained at the 1987 level, reflecting declining zircon grades. Exports of mineral sands concentrates increased in 1988; export earnings exceeded $300million. Prices for mineral sands concentrates are now at a historical high and, assuming that the world economy remains strong, real prices should continue to trend upwards in the short term. Exploration in the Eneabba-Cooljarloo region and the Scott River area, both in WA, the Murray Basin, Vic, and the central Queensland coast area, has identified substantial resources of heavy mineral sands. These discoveries have reversed the trend of the early 1980s of falling resources of mineral sands. In 1988, BMR estimated that economic demonstrated resources (EDR) of ilmenite, rutile, zircon and monazite combined was about 72.8 million tonnes. However, a substantial portion of the resources on the east coast are frozen as a result of environmental considerations. The proportion of mineral sands concentrates processed in Australia increased with the commissioning of two new synthetic rutile plants; Australia is now the world's leading producer of synthetic rutile (total capacity 272000 tonnes), most of it for export. Australia's two TiO2 pigment producers have both increased capacity, lifting national capacity by some 70p ercent to over 120000 tonnes/yr. As part of the expansion one producer converted from the sulphate to the chloride process. Other new pigment plants are being proposed for the future.

The modulus of elasticity of rock material (Ei) is an important rock property that is used as an input parameter in the design stage of engineering projects such as dam and tunnel constructions, mining excavations, and so forth. However, determination of the modulus of elasticity is sometimes difficult to obtain by laboratory tests because high-quality cores are required. For this reason, empirical methods for predicting the modulus of elasticity of rock material have been popular research topics in recently published literature. In this study, the relationships between the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), unit weight (?) and modulus of elasticity for different types of rocks were analysed by using 177 data obtained from laboratory tests carried out on cores obtained from drill holes within the area of the Kadiköy-Kartal Metro line (Istanbul, Turkey). One of the least known geologic regions in the U.S. is the area now called the Basin and Range Province. It is paradoxical that so little geologic information has been compiled for a province that has yielded billions of dollars worth of metals and is currently producing a small amount of oil. Regional stratigraphic studies of parts of this large territory have been published only recently, and regional structural interpretations of even parts of the province are rare in the literature. This, of course, does great injustice to the earliest workers: Gilbert,1,2 Russell,9 Le Conte,4 Spurr,5 Louderback,8 and others, who recognized the area as distinctively different from the rest of North America. Their simplified picture of the structure of the ranges and the province as a whole is the groundwork for present understanding and has never been superseded. Since their early works, however, geologic data from the province has consisted largely of detailed reports of widely scattered mining districts. Each district has been described as though it were an island in an unknown sea. More recent syntheses of the geologic history have been prepared by Lindgren,7 Ransome,8 Nolan,9 Bill-ingsley and Locke,30 Longwell,11 and Eardley.12 The tentative nature of the present interpretation, which treats the structural evolution of the Utah and Nevada area, must be considered in light of the scarcity of geologic information from the province as a whole. The methods of interpreting tectonic history from stratigraphy are based largely on the concepts of Marshal Kay.23 Discussions with Hoover Mackin also have aided in organizing the Tertiary history. TECTONIC AND STRATIGRAPHIC SETTING Two approaches to the subject of the tectonic history are possible; they correspond to looking through opposite ends of a pair of binoculars. One involves an expansion and extension of detailed work and the other an interpretation based on regional geological relationships. It is believed that the second approach, used here, is not in disagreement with detailed observations. The area of the Basin and Range Province is shown in Fig. 1. Within this area middle Tertiary to Recent high-angle faulting has controlled development of mountain ranges and valleys. Only the part of the area north of Las Vegas, Nev., and south of the Snake River in Idaho will be considered in this article. Within this part of the province most of the ranges trend north-south. Approximately two thirds of the area is covered by late Tertiary to Recent valley fill and lake deposits.

Since the term "abandoned hazardous sites" was first coined in the 1978 environmental report of the Council of Environmental Specialists, a number of different types of technology has been developed in the Federal Republic of Germany for the remediation of contaminated soils /l/. At former sites of the mining industry, such as metallurgical and coking plants whose soil has been contaminated by organic and inorganic pollutants over decades of industrial activity, there is an exceeding necessity for soil remediation. Also, many former locations of metal processing works, battery factories or scrap yards have been contaminated in particular by heavy metals. Wet mechanical soil decontamination has proven successful over the past 10-15 years in the purification of these soils The process goal is the enrichment of the pollutants in certain plant products and the separation of a pollutant concentrate from the decontaminated soil. Table 1 lists the steps of the highly advanced wet mechanical soil decontamination process to achieve this process goal. Table 1 lists both the name of each process step and its goal in terms of a direct separation of the pollutant or the preparation of the soil for subsequent separation steps. For the separation of heavy metals, density sorting and separation techniques utilising flotation were specifically used. The use of chemical auxiliaries such as acids and lye is limited to special cases because these in themselves produce additional environmental impact and the economical effficiency of these techniques compared to conventional methods is lowered by supplementary process steps for water purification. The subject of this presentation is to consider how soil decontamination processes can be effectively improved through a description of the material properties of soils contaminated by heavy metals, and through carrying out basic investigations about the adsorption of heavy metals. Soils of different origins, especially those from former mining and metallurgical sites, were used for the experiments.
