The dewatering of the large construction pits required for major infrastructure projects often has a significant impact on the environment. This is particularly so in urban areas and where groundwater resources are of interest. These environmental impacts are inter alia, groundwater lowering and the consequent effects such as settlement and deterioration of timber foundations, together with the impact of the dewatering on the groundwater quality. In order to minimise the environmental impact of the dewatering, the quantity of water to be abstracted and the amount of groundwater lowering in the surrounding area must be minimised. This paper describes the measures that have been taken on the Copenhagen metro project to achieve the objective of minimal environmental impact whilst still carrying out a major dewatering scheme.

In 2006, the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (?2006 MINER Act?), Pub. L. No. 109-236, 120 Stat. 493 (2006) was enacted in a bi-partisan move to strengthen the 1977 Mine Safety and Health Act. This action followed several underground coal mining accidents at the Sago and Aracoma Mines in West Virginia and the Darby Mine in Kentucky. The focus of that legislation was, in part, to force technological development and implementation. It involved the recomposition and training of rescue teams. Requirements for sealing worked out areas of mines were changed when MSHA invoked its Emergency Temporary Standard (?ETS?) authority for the first time in many years. Increased penalty amounts were established for certain types of violations for all types of mining, and minimums were set for unwarrantable failure violations issued under Section 104 (d)(1) and (d)(2); 30 U.S.C. Section 814 (d)(1),(2). The entire 30 C.F.R. Part 100 penalty criteria was revamped in a rulemaking, effective in April 2007. The visions were ambitious and noteworthy and those in industry and government have spent the last four years working through the aftermath of intended and unintended consequences of these changes. The penalty structure arrived at in 2007 has proven unwieldy and has contributed to the increase in contested caseload now before the Federal Mine Safety and Health Review Commission. In essence, litigation under the Mine Act ground to a virtual halt when the number of cases increased but the budget for Administrative Law Judges, who hear the cases, and the Solicitor?s office who represents MSHA, was not increased. Addressing the backlog effectively was one of the major challenges when Joe Main was confirmed as Assistant Secretary in early 2010.

Geometallurgical characterization of iron ore which is a raw material for Iron making as in the case of charcoal blast furnaces operating in Brazil or for production of agglomerates such as iron ore sinter which serves as burden material for blast furnces of high productivity or pellets extensively used in the direct reduction processes all over the world in the iron and steel industry. Selection of proper raw material after due characterization should lead to an improvement of the productivity of the respective processes The usual classification of quality of iron ore is uniquely based on chemical analysis, granulometric and physical parameters. However not much emphasis has been given to the structural characteristics which also are important in the processes. Different typological categories of Brazilian iron ores have been used in the characterization . For instance, several kinds of hematite crystals like specularite, martite and microgranular hematite, etc with variable crystal sizes are found in the different ore types. They are also composed of different of fabrics and types of accessorial mineralogical constituents and have different porosities, pore diameters, etc which influence the cold and the hot agglomeration stages of the ore fines, and also chracteristics such as reducibility, decrepitation etc, important for assessment of quality of iron ores. . The first step for attaining a good characterization of ores is to know in detail about the structure of the deposit, shape of the body, types of iron ores and their distribution. This requires a geological-structural study and the mapping of the bodies using mineralogical criteria for typological classification of ores. followed by structural characterization of materials in stages of mining, comminution, screening and concentration processes. In this contribution a geometallurgical approach for quality control of Brazilian iron ores for sintering and pelletizing processes is highligted.

"Economies of scale and the variable characteristics of many large ore deposits have resulted in grinding installations using very large SAG mills fitted with variable speed drives. Low-aspectratio single-stage SAG mills were introduced in South Africa to process the consistent gold bearing Witwatersrand quartzites. Elsewhere, circuits were patterned after the more conventional North American circuits with high-aspect-ratio SAG mills followed by ball mills. This paper provides information on two recent Gold Fields group installations covering both types of SAG mill in large, single-stage applications. While these operations process similar tonnages, the mills represent opposite ends of the aspect-ratio spectrum. The Tarkwa mine in Ghana employs a low-aspect 27’ x 42’ 14MW SAG mill. The St Ives mine in Australia operates a conventional 36’ x 18’ 13.4MW SAG mill.INTRODUCTIONGold Fields is one of the world’s largest gold producers with annual production of approximately 4.2 million ounces. The Gold Fields group has operations in South Africa, Ghana and Australia, along with numerous exploration sites and advanced projects in several other countries. Background Increasingly complex geological conditions, with the presence of high ash binders in the mining horizon were encountered at the A.C. I. Dugout Mine near Price, Utah. This led to the production of high ash coal from the Dugout Mine during 2003 and 2004. This material had poor marketability and posed operating issues for the utilities burning the coal. Ash levels increased from typical levels in the 9-12% range to between 15 and 25%. etween 15 and 25%. Reviews of the mine plan and expected geological conditions indicated that further periods of high ash production could be expected. Action Plan Detailed sampling of the mine high ash production was carried out. The majority of the coal from the Dugout Mine is trucked to the Savage Coal Terminal (SCT) at Wellington, Utah where it is stored in multiple piles by quality. Coal at the mine is segregated by a CoalScan 2600, on-line analyzer into high ash, low ash and rock chute (waste material). From these piles, the material is crushed prior to shipment to SCT. The samples obtained from the various high ash piles were subjected to detailed sizing and washability analysis. Once this information was obtained, alternative circuit configurations were evaluated to process this material into a salable product. Water supplies in the arid terrain where the plant is located are scarce. This factor played a part in the final circuit design.

"In flotation circuits, direct measurement of the volumetric flow rate delivered by electromagnetic flowmeters is often difficult to obtain particularly due to piping and flow constraints. However, on-line material balance calculation could offer a reliable alternative to flow rate sensing. This paper describes an on-line material balance software package as applied to a copper flotation circuit for mass flow rate estimation mainly based on the output of an x-ray fluorescence onstream analyser. Rule-based procedures for the management of the main calculation modules are designed and integrated to a Comdale expert system. Attempts to diagnose the flotation process from mass flow rate data are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe need for improved process diagnosis, control and optimisation has become more evident for the mineral processing industry in the last decade. Therefore, new process variables need to be inferred or measured particularly in highly multivariable processes such as flotation. This process is subject to a wide variety of disturbances mainly generated by frequent and sometimes abrupt changes in physical and chemical characteristics of the ore and due to some irregularities in manual process operating procedures.A flotation circuit scheme is always a complex network counting more than two dozens of slurry streams. Information about those streams (%solids, metal content analysis, and flow rates) are important for process diagnosis, performance evaluation control and optimization (1,3).On-line sensing instruments such as x-ray fluorescence (XRF) on-stream analysers (OSA), gamma density gauges and electromagnetic flowmeters have been developed for the measurement of those variables. The northern KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) coastal dune cordon, South Africa, extends from north of Durban into Mozambique. The Quaternary dune cordon, which can be up to 2 km wide, comprises a series of stacked, unconsolidated dunes that in places attain a height of over 100 m. Mining of the dunes produces much of the world’s supply of ilmenite, rutile and zircon. This paper documents the age of zircon grains separated from dune units, identifies likely source rocks and presents an evolutionary history for the dune cordon. Between 30 and 60 detrital zircon grains from three distinct units from the northern KZN coastal dunes were analysed for U/Pb isotopic ages using the SHRIMP II at the Australian National University. The samples represent units from the base (ca. 250 ka; luminescence age1),middle (ca. 190 ka2) and upper (ca. 20 ka2) portions of the coastal dune cordon. Zircon grain ages identify three source populations: (1) a 1 000 to 1 200 Ma group correlated to the Natal Metamorphic Province, (2) a 500 to 650 Ma group representing a Pan-African belt, which may correlate to the Mozambique Belt and (3) a ca. 650 to 800 Ma group of unknown provenance. Surprisingly, the presently exposed basement, comprising the Kaapvaal Craton and Archaean volcano-sedimentary sequences, has not supplied a significant amount of zircon grains (< 5%).This suggests that unroofing of basement rocks in the region has only occurred during the last 20ka. In addition, the absence of zircon grains younger than 500 Ma indicates that the bulk of zirconis not reworked from the Karoo Supergroup cover succession, but may be sourced by reworking of the Natal Group sandstones.

Two house trailers and a modem modular house, all pillar-supported with cantilevered perimeters, were monitored for structural response to vibrations from surface coal mine blasts. Due to the large blast site distances, peak particle velocities measured in the ground beside the houses did not exceed 0.32 ips, and airblasts did not exceed 106 dB. However, the structures responded significantly to the ground vibrations, with maximum high-comer amplification factors as high as 8.5 in the horizontal directions. Vertical structural responses were as high as 10 times the vertical peak particle velocities in the ground, but appeared to be driven more by horizontal ground motions. No measurable airblast responses were observed. The natural frequencies of the structures ranged from 5 to 10 Hz.

Real copper prices during the past several decades display two striking characteristics. First, they are highly volatile. Within a year or two, copper prices can rise or fall by 30% or more. Second, over the longer term, they are falling. Indeed, since 1970, the secular trend price for copper is down by more than 50%. Figure 1 highlights both of these characteristics. It shows the average annual US producer price for copper since 1970 measured in constant 2001 US dollars. While the London Metal Exchange (LME) copper price is not shown, it and the US producer price have for some time moved more or less together. So pronounced short-run fluctuations around a significant long-run decline describe copper prices, not only in the United States, but around the world.

Advances in inexpensive computer automation led to the development and use of a computerized ore control system at the Cyprus Copperstone Gold Mine near Parker, AZ. These new ore control practices improved accuracy, performance and productivity of the ore control effort. An automated system for data collection, including bar coding of blasthole samples, laboratory analysis, data management, grade estimation, cut delineation and ore zone stake out, plays a major role in ore control practices. This is of particular interest because of the large amount of blasthole information being processed, analyzed and reported daily. Copperstone Gold management has been progressive toward new, efficient methods regarding ore reserve estimation, long-term mine planning, short-term mine planning, ore control and surveying. Technological advances, including powerful personal computers, applicable mine planning software and surveying instrumentation, have become readily available and affordable. The computerized ore control procedures used at Copperstone include sample data collection, laboratory automation and computerized data management. These have reduced the time to complete ore control on a blast pattern by 50% to 75%. The final product - ore control - is generated in a more timely and accurate manner.

The Palabora Mining Company has successfully extended the life of its operation by developing a 30,000tpd block cave underground mine below the now closed open pit. The process of transitioning from surface to underground mining has been technically, operationally and managerially challenging. This has been due to a number of factors; in particular, the development of a block cave in a very competent rock mass. The competence of the rock mass is clearly demonstrated in the open pit that preceded the block cave, one of the steepest deep open pit excavations in the world. With cave breakthrough, however, the pit was ?instantaneously? deepened by 400m causing a major failure of the northwest wall involving close to 100Mt of waste material.

The Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation (PKM) is a large-scale open pit mine located in northern Laos. It was developed and is operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited (PBM) a Lao-registered subsidiary company of Australian incorporated, PanAust Limited. Production commenced at Phu Kham in 2008. Since the second half of 2016, there has been a significant increase in ore hardness and this has negatively impacted the PKM concentrator and resulted in lower SAG mill throughput rates. Over the remaining life of mine, the changing ore body and increase in ore hardness is forecast to continue as the pit deepens and the availability of softer blending ores reduce. To manage this risk, PKM initiated a Hard Ores Management Program to determine the most effective way to improve the mill throughput of harder ores. This involved conducting a number of innovative and process control driven blasting trials to optimize run-of-mine (ROM) fragmentation and other blasting outcomes. From 2016 to 2017, the performance of high powder factor blasting, electronic detonators and fast timing, high velocity of detonation (VOD) explosives, double-priming, and deck blasting, were individually and systematically assessed. The success of each blasting trial was then based on a ‘value for money’ criteria. This criteria is a cost / benefit analysis that weighed-up the additional cost to implement the trial against the measured improvement in mill throughput. Electronic and high VOD 90:10 emulsion:ANFO blasts were determined to have the best value for money, achieving an increase in mill throughput of 54% compared to baseline. This paper discusses how the implementation of an innovative and process control driven blasting trial methodology was able to successfully manage the hard ore challenges at PKM. In addition, this success was achieved without any major cost implications, safety incidents or process plant set-backs.

"This paper is the second of a series of progress reports4 on a study of the hydrometallurgy of manganese which is being conducted in an endeavor to make possible utilization of the large deposits of low-grade domestic manganese ores that occur in several States.There are at least four processes in which a knowledge of the action of SO2 gas on manganese oxides at elevated temperatures may prove of value.One of these involves dissolution of manganese from ores. The Bureau of Mines has investigated the hydrometallurgy of manganese by a process in which SO2 gas, a waste product at many smelters, is passed into water to form a solvent for manganese. Although several manganese minerals were readily dissolved, rhodochrosite (MnCO3) was attacked but superficially.5 Recent experiments have shown that a roast at 650 to 9000 C. converts the manganese of rhodochrosite to a form that is quickly dissolved by a weak SO2 solution.6 Introduction of smelter gases containing much as 5 per cent SO2 during such a roast would not add much to the cost of the operation, and might result in the formation of considerable water-soluble manganese sulpate.Another case involves a subsequent step in the hydrometallurgical process, namely, the formation of oxides of manganese with simultaneous evolution of SO2 by the heating of the MnSO4 produced by evaporating its solution.A third has to do with the roasting of zinc sulphide ores containing manganese as a preliminary to leaching. During purification of the solutions to be used for the electrolytic deposition of zinc the iron must be oxidized to make possible its removal. Manganese dioxide has been used for this purpose,7 and since manganese compounds are present in some zinc concentrates,8 it is of interest to learn what happens to the manganese in a zinc sulphide or on roasting, and what portion of the manganese in the roasted product might be available for oxidation."

A study(1) on the sulfuric acid extraction of alumina from some Pennsylvania ferruginous clays indicated that the published electrolytic method(2)(3) seems to be more efficient than the known chemical methods (4-9) for removing iron from the leach liquor. The main disadvantages of the chemical methods are the consumption of excessive amounts of reagents and/or the precipitation of prohibitive amounts of aluminum. In the electrolytic method, iron is deposited on the mercury cathode, while aluminum is not and remains in solution. This method, however, had been handicapped by the lack of an effective and economical way to purify the contaminated mercury cathode.(7)(l0). Described herein is a scheme for cleaning the mercury cathode, and for recycling the clean mercury back into the electrolytic cell. Armed with such an apparatus, the effects of applied potential, temperature, and operation time on the electrolytic separation of iron from aluminum sulfate solutions were determined. For the sake of comparing results, a term, removability, was coined to represent the percentage of iron amalgamated per unit height of electrolyte (cm.), per unit surface area of cathode (cm.2), per unit of operation time (second).

A.) : In congratulating Mr. Hooker upon his resume of Mr Parry&apos;s paper I have in mind the fact that he carried out the research into pipe pressures. Hydraulic filling as practised in Kalgoorlie has created world wide interest, with these pressures and percolation being vital points.Early in the 1950s, representatives of the Kolar field were conduGted over the local mines where stopes at depths below 2,000 ft were being filled. The problems of pipe pressures were their main consideration since depths of up to 10,000 ft were envisaged.Mr Krishnaiah and Mr Murthy from the same field are with us today and perhaps we may hear of their experiences with depths of 6,000 ft and long lateral lines.J. RESEARCH in the steel industry, as in other lines of manufacturing, has for its principal purpose the increasing of profits. That is what manufacturing companies are for, and all departments of the organization must be so coordinated as to lead to profitable operation. To divide a payroll into productive and non-productive labor is misleading. Productive labor, in fact, is necessary labor, and non- productive labor is the labor we can get along without. One might as well say that the steering wheel is not a part of an automobile as to say that the directing minds of an industry are non-productive. Legitimate manufacturing profits in a steel company or any other company are the reward that the public pays for service rendered or risk taken. The desire for profits is the impelling motive that leads investors .to take risks and build up industries that give employment to others. Every department of a company, be it executive, manufacturing, financial, sales, or research, must contribute to the one end which brings success-profits.

A campaign was undertaken during the greater part of 2001 at Noranda’s Brunswick mine concentrator to investigate the role of gas (air) superficial rate (Jg) distribution to the cells in the final Zn cleaning stage (bank of seven cells), i.e. the Jg profile. Three profiles were tested: “balanced” (each cell with same Jg), “increasing” (from cell 1 to 7 proportionally), and “decreasing,” along with an “as found” profile in a parallel control bank. The experimental design allowed for two confounding factors, changes in ore type and circulating load. The increasing profile consistently gave the best metallurgy (down-the-bank grade / recovery). The reason for improved performance was the response of the first cells in the bank where the increasing profile gave the highest selectivity of sphalerite against nonsulphide gangue (NSG). The other profiles gave lower selectivity and higher zinc recovery in the first cells, which combined to reduce overall bank performance. The higher selectivity with the Increasing profile is attributed to the low gas rate in the first cells reducing water recovery and hence limiting entrainment of NSG. The increasing profile was subsequently configured for all four stages in the zinc cleaner circuit.

An examination is made of some of the consequences of a magmatic gas phase developed during a late stage of differentiation of an acidic magma. Elements possessing halides with high partial pressures (Sn, Mo, W) may be removed from the magma by distillation into gas bubbles in the manner suggested by Fenner (1933). The common chalcophile elements are not affected by this mechanism, but form sulphides which may become attached to rising gas bubbles by one of three distinct mechanisms. The gas bubbles may then carry the sulphides upwards and concentrate them in some favourable locus, giving rise to an ore-forming fluid. The process would operate selectively upon different sulphides and is capable of providing an explanation of the paragenetic succession observed in ore deposits as well as other important geological criteria of ore genesis.INTRODUCTIONThere is a widespread belief among contemporary geologists that a large and important class of ore deposits is genetically related in some way&#183;to acidic igneous rocks. This class includes the tin-tungsten-molybdenum-bismuth type of mineralization as well as a variety of sulphide deposits.A basic problem confronting explanation of the genesis of these deposits is the manner in which trace elements which were originally widely dispersed in granitic magmas were segregated therefrom and concentrated into economic mineral deposits.The principles underlying the formation of one group of minerals deposits (pegmatites) related to granitic magmas ate reasonably well understood, largely due to the labours of Goldschmidt and his school.
