WISH to call the attention of the Institute to a curious subject, brought to my notice last summer by Mr. Begger, the accomplished metallurgist of the smelting-works of the Boston and Colorado Company at Black Hawk, near Central City, Colorado. At these works, the richest auriferous sulphhrets of Colorado (particularly copper pyrites) are smelted in reverberatories, together with roasted tailings (iron pyrites), and the gold and silver are concentrated into a new, artificial sulphide, or copper matte, containing $1500 and upwards of the precious metals per ton, and this is shipped to Swansea. I will say in passing, that this shipment of an unrefined product, like the similar shipments from Utah and Nevada to San Francisco, Chi¬cago, St. Louis, Newark, New York, and Europe, of crude argentiferous lead or "base bullion," is not a sign of incomplete metallurgy here, but has a sound business reason. The separation of the precious metals in the West would be more expensive, to begin with ; and then it would necessitate the movement of these metals by express, at high rates and risk, to commercial centres or coining mints, while the base metals having no home market, must be shipped and sold at little or no profit. At present, the gold and silver, safely packed, as it were, in the base metals, are transported with safety as ordinary freight; and the base metals probably more than pay cost of shipment and separation. Prominent among the ore minerals at Mt. Ellison, in the Brock's Creek district, Northern Territory, are a number of copper-bismuth sulphides wittichenite, aikinite, emplectite, in association with nativebismuth, chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite, sphalerite and linnaeite.Linnaeite and aikinite formed first and were followed by native bismuth. Wittichenite was later and substantially replaces earlier minerals. Replacement of aikinite by wittichenite has produced secondaryor reaction bismuth.INTRODUCTIONThe Brock's Creek district of the Northern Territory lies to the south east of Darwin and has been the locale of intermittent mining of small but rich deposits of diverse ore type. Gold, tin, and copper ores were recovered especially between 1890 and 1910 with minor exploitation up to the present time. Copper ores were of prior importance, the main production coming from supergene enriched deposits of chalcocite.The mines are situated in strongly folded Precambrian strata comprising slates, sandstones, volcanics and amphibolites with replaced haematitic rocks (Sullivan, 1953). The strata in the Brock's Creek area immediately north of the Darwin-Birdum railway line are domed around a roughly circular granitic mass some 5 miles in diameter. The Mount Ellison mine is located near the N.E. margin of the granite in metamorphosed basic country rock.Study of a series of polished sections from Mt. Ellison revealed the presence of linnaeite, chalcopyrite, bornite, aikinite, wittichenite, emplectite, bismuth, sphalerite, and chalcocite. With the exception of sphalerite and emplectite each of these minerals is prominently developed and intimately intergrown with the other constituents.

At the end of the first decade of digital computing in the minerals industry, geostatistics in North America was still in its infancy. This was in contrast with the rest of the world where the technique of kriging was already widely practiced. By the end of the 1970s, there was increasing awareness among practitioners of its potential. But it was not until the late 1980s that geostatistics was universally applied and accepted. This was due, in large measure, to contributors at Applications of Computers and Operations Research in the Minerals Industry (APCOM) symposia. Such an evolution in new computer methods could again be observed at APCOM 26.

Mining is increasingly occurring near or below the water table. This has led to a higher rate of handling problems associated with increased moisture and increased adhesion, which lead to a higher rate of blockage events within the materials handling chain. Typically, these ores and minerals are known as ‘wet and sticky materials’.Currently there is very limited knowledge and/or methodologies for effective design of efficient materials handling systems when it comes to handling wet and sticky materials. However, there is one major parameter that significantly affects handleability of a wet and sticky ore; namely, its moisture content. Flow property testing has shown that when moisture is reduced, the adhesive properties of the ore are also significantly reduced, thereby increasing ore flowability.The research embodied in this paper investigates the moisture reduction rate through a loose packed bed of iron ore using dry, ambient temperature airflow. A comparison of the predictive capabilities of a proposed drying model to data obtained from on-site experiments using iron ore fines is made. Building on an assumption made by Hukill (1954), a second term has been proposed to account for rewetting effects in the drying process. Controlled graphitization has become known as a practical method for improvement of wear resistance and machining properties in steels. In this paper, the effect of heat treatment on microstructure of CK45 steel has been investigated. Austenitising was carried out at 920°C for 5 hours. Besides, isothermal transformation was conducted at 750°C in the time range of 1-20 hours. The microstructure of the steel considerably changes by this heat treatment process which exhibits the effects of temperature, appropriate austenitising duration and isothermal transformation. Conducted experiments show a suitable distribution of semi-spherical graphite particles especially on the surface of the steel. Also, analyses demonstrate that the amount of formed graphite in the austenitising temperature 920°C is more than graphite in single heat treatment temperature of 750°C.

Optimizing production scheduling in open pit mines is important for managing cash flows of mining operations. This paper describes a new, probabilistic, mixed integer programming (MIP) formulation which has been developed to minimize the risk of not achieving planned production targets, in terms of metal production and ore tonnage feed for the mill during production, while considering maximization of total discounted economic value. The new MIP model also recognizes that to minimize movement of excavators over long distances and accommodate equipment access, the blocks scheduled for mining within a period cannot be spread too widely. The model is applied to a laterite nickel-cobalt deposit, as an example of multi-element deposits that have complex ore quality constraints. The results show that the proposed model generates feasible schedules. When compared with traditional optimization techniques, the new model is superior in terms of minimizing the risk of not meeting production targets, especially at the early stages of production, and in terms of generating practical scheduling patterns.

"The McClean Lake operation is located in the Eastern Shore of the Athabasca Basin in northern Saskatchewan some 700-air kilometers north of Saskatoon. It is operated by Cogema Resources Inc., the major share holder of the joint venture consisting of Cogema Resources Inc., Denison Mines Limited and OURD, a consortium of Japanese utilities.The JEB mill is the first uranium mill to be constructed and licensed in North America within the last 15 years. The mill uses conventional uranium unit process but employs innovative techniques unique to the JEB mill.This paper presents brief descriptions of the various unit processes, the innovations and the commissioning strategies developed to achieve the designed production capacity in the shortest possible time.INTRODUCTIONThe McClean Lake ore body was discovered in 1979, followed by the discovery of the JEB ore body in 1982. From 1985 to 1990, a cluster of deposits named Sue A, Sue B and Sue C were discovered. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIS) of the McClean Lake project began in 1990 under a joint federal-provincial process. Following the public hearings in 1993, the governments gave approval to proceed with the construction of the project, subject to fulfilling licensing requirements.The McClean Lake ores are located in the uranium-rich geological region of Saskatchewan known as the Athabasca Basin, 700 air kilometers north of Saskatoon. The JEB mill is located near the mined out JEB open pit that is now used as the tailing depository.The approved mill has a production capacity of 6,000,000 pounds of U3O8 annually and is capable and licensed to process JEB, Sue A, Sue B, Sue C, McClean Lake, and Midwest Lake deposits. Although the EIS has been approved, Mining of the Midwest Lake deposit has not been approved at this time."

Underwind and overwind protection system concepts for mine hoist shafts were developed in conjunction with and for the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC). End-of-wind operation of mine hoists is the most hazardous aspect of mine hoisting, carrying the highest risk of loss of life, injuries to workers and loss of production. Systems operating mechanically and with local actuation were developed. This was done in order to remove the increased risk associated with dependency on remote or external energy and information supply associated with most existing protection systems. The proposed underwind protection system concept absorbs the energy of motion of a conveyance overrunning the design lower limit of travel by drawing a metal strip through a set of rollers. This action causes dynamic cyclic plastic bending of the strip material that converts the kinetic and potential energy of the conveyance into strain energy of the metal. In the concept design a pair of steel wire rope slings attached to the strips catch the overrunning conveyance and transfer the retardation force. The proposed overwind protection system concept absorbs the energy of motion of a conveyance overrunning the design upper limit of travel by early detaching of the conveyance from the hoist rope. This detaching is carried out via an additional detaching hook activation mechanism fitted at a sufficient height below the spectacle plate to allow the conveyance to retard to standstill under gravity before it would crash into the spectacle plate. The conveyance so brought to rest is prevented from falling by means of jack catches on the conveyance interacting with a rack (toothed profile) fitted on the guide rails in the retardation zone. Scale models (1:10 scale) of both protection systems were designed to conform to established retardation standards. The retardation standards were limited by the requirement of passenger safety in retarding cages. The models were then built and tested in a1:10 scale shaft model. Retardation performance close to the required levels was achieved. The retardation distance required should allow such systems to be retrofitted in most existing shafts. Given the simplicity and robustness of the designs, further development was recommended because of their enhanced self-sufficiency and reduced risk of malfunction. The storage capacity of any given tailings storage facility (TSF) is a function of the volume available for the tailings, for which the geometry of the final upper surface of the tailings is most important. One of the advantages that can be obtained from thickening tailings prior to discharge is that the tailings can be stacked at a steeper beach angle than is obtainable with conventional low-density slurries. However, there is at present no universally accepted method available for the accurate prediction of tailings beach slopes. This paper examines the current situation with the objective of putting the quest for a method for the accurate prediction of beach slopes into perspective. The paper references published reviews of the best-known beach slope prediction methods. However, there do not appear to be any independently verified projects or published references to projects on which a Class A prediction has been validated for any of these approaches, and in those instances where projects have been implemented correlation of actual with predicted slopes has been poor - often due to differences between the properties of the tailings assumed in the design and those actually achieved in the field. The author also concludes that flume-scale testing cannot be taken as a reliable indicator of full-scale performance, and suggests that the outcome of any current predictive method should be used by experienced practitioners as only one of a range of indicators in order to suggest a range of slope angles likely to result for any given operation. Practice has shown that it is possible to manipulate beach slopes by changes to the disposal technique, such as limiting the rate of discharge per discharge point and by increasing or decreasing yield stress, but the impact of these changes cannot readily be predicted. There are also newly emerging technologies, such as the injection of a polymer into the tailings at discharge, that will enhance the dewatering of tailings and hence expedite the consolidation of the tailings, that could well facilitate the development of steeper beach slopes. The overall conclusion is that with the current state of knowledge, the accurate prediction of beach slopes is not possible. Furthermore, in view of the inherent variability of the tailings parameters from any operation, it may well be of more value to concentrate on developing an understanding of the means by which the tailings parameters may be manipulated by the operators to achieve a given beach slope than to concentrate wholly on developing a generic beach slope prediction model.

A cooperative study was conducted with Emerald Coal Resources, L.P., an affiliate of Foundation Coal Corporation, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to evaluate the effectiveness of (partially) pre-driven longwall recovery rooms supported with pumpable roof supports. This paper evaluates the load transfer mechanics associated with the advancement of the longwall face into the pre-driven recovery room and the widening of the room to recover the longwall shields. The results show that the yielding of the panel fender produced uncontrollable convergence that caused yielding of the shields and stiff pumpable roof supports when the face was approximately 10 ft from the recovery room. The shields continued to yield until the face advanced into the recovery room. Convergence in the pre-driven recovery room typically reached 6-8 in once the pumpable supports yielded and shed load through a declining residual load capacity prior to being cut out by the longwall shearer. Roof deformations occurred beyond the 32-ft horizon with total deformation ranging from 2 to 4 in, indicating that standing support was necessary to help control the span as the longwall face advanced into the pre-driven recovery room. Stability improved as the pumpable supports were cut out, thereby reducing the span between the shields and the outby pillars. In the end, the shields were successfully recovered under stable ground conditions. However, a disconcerting discovery was the load shedding of the outby pillars as the recovery room was mined into. It is postulated that this may be due to the progression of the rear “abutment” moving toward the recovery room as the panel fender and standing support in the recovery room yield and shed load. This behavior was not expected with a relatively narrow room that is fully supported with standing support. If this mechanism is indeed occurring, the width of the room and performance of the standing support becomes even more critical. Premature failure of the support can lead to excessive convergence on the shield line that cannot be controlled even with modern shields, resulting in roof instabilities that can lead to catastrophic results.

Binders have been suggested as an aid for agglomeration to improve copper recovery in heap leaching operations. However, it has not been established if the use of binders would negatively affect the solvent extraction process, which is used to purify the pregnant leach solution from the heaps and remove any contaminants. Such negative effects would lead to an increase in processing costs or a decreased in copper production. The controlled studies reported here have shown that some binders (a polyacrylamide and a waste treatment additive) did not interfere with the solvent extraction process. Other binders (a polyvinyl acetate emulsion and tall oil pitch) negatively impacted copper solvent extraction and, therefore, should not be used in copper heap leaching plants.

EVERY year it becomes more difficult to find new mining districts and new ore deposits. Nearly all of the important discoveries so far can be attributed to surface manifestations overlying the ore deposit. In the future greater skill will be necessary to find ore deposits that give little or no indication of their presence. Mining geology is making progress by broadening its attack upon mineralized regions, by including in its investigations studies of the relation of physical-chemical processes to ore precipitation and various phenomena that heretofore have not always been looked upon as major factors in the problems. Such, for example, are petrographic peculiarities that will help determine structure, aspects of strata or formations favorable or unfavorable to structural deformation or mineralization, and renewed studies of chert and dolomite. This broadening attack is not necessarily being directed to the study of large areas, but rather by doing extremely detailed work in three dimensions in relatively small critical areas to find the key to the structure, reasons for the manner of rock deformation, composition and texture of the rock, and other con¬trolling factors in the larger areas.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an environmental noise survey to determine the noise levels to which underground coal mine employees are exposed, to evaluate noise survey techniques and equipment, and to compare noise exposures using two criteria, Walsh-Healey and CHABA, for determining allowable exposures that were under consideration for the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969- Time study techniques and Bureau-approved standard sound level meters were employed. The shift exposures of 20 percent of the miners studied were in excess of the safe standards established by both criteria. The shift exposures calculated using the Walsh-Healey criteria were greater than those calculated using the CHABA criteria owing to the intermittent nature of the exposure. Ultimately the CHABA criteria were rejected, and the Walsh-Healey criteria were adopted.

"The Australasian Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC Code) has been operating successfully for 14 years, and has an ancestry dating back over 30 years. Together with complementary developments in stock exchange listing rules, the Code has brought about substantially improved standards of public reporting by Australasian mining and exploration companies. The Code is regarded as a world leader in its field, and has been used as a basis for the development of resource/reserve reporting standards in other countries. The reasons for its success are varied, foremost among them being its adoption in full by the Australian and New Zealand stock exchanges, and the ability and willingness of mining industry organizations to bring Competent Persons to account when necessary.The latest revision of the JORC Code was undertaken in 2002-2003, based in part on releases of upgraded reporting standards in Canada, the United Kingdom/Western Europe, and South Africa, and the 2003 edition is expected to be released mid-year. Two of the more significant changes are: the introduction of a requirement for a Competent Person to be responsible for the documentation upon which Exploration Results are reported; and inclusion in the definition of a Competent Person of a reference to “Recognized Overseas Professional Organizations” being overseas professional organizations to which Competent Persons may belong for the purpose of preparing documentation for the submission of reports to the Australian Stock Exchange."

A two-year study focused on current noise exposure levels in the South African mining industry, aimed at helping the Mine Health and Safety Council of South Africa meet its milestones for eliminating noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Methods A multi-task methodology was adapted from international baseline studies to determine the exposure to noise in both large-scale and small- to medium-scale mines. Results On average, 66.7 per cent of the employees sampled in year 1 and 78.4 per cent in year 2 were exposed to noise levels of above the 85 dB A legislated occupational exposure level. Conclusions Information obtained through the study could be developed into a national personal noise exposure database, including audiometric results, equipment noise emission levels and initiatives for noise engineering control by mines and equipment manufacturers to facilitate targets of eliminating NIHL. Thiosulfate offers a non-toxic alternative to cyanide for processing gold ores. The mechanism of leaching gold using ammoniacal thiosulfate solution is driven by the Cu(II)-Cu(I) redox couple and is complicated by competing ligands such as NH3 and S2O32-. It is shown that an understanding of the copper speciation and sulfur speciation is required to optimise this system. This paper presents Eh-pH and speciation diagrams for varying concentrations of Cu(II), S2O32- and NH3 and discusses the conditions under which various copper and sulfur species are stable.

1967 will be remembered as the year the world realized it was running out of silver. In May of this year a new era in tin the history of the white metal was begun as the power of the U.S. Treasury to regulate world .silver markets was staggered by one of the most intense speculative flurries in recent times. In the past few months the price of silver has risen from $1, 29 to over $1.80 per troy ounce and with it have spiraled the prices of a host of silver-bearing consumer items. Legislation has, been enacted to conserve our coinage and meager silver stocks and today large quantities of non-existent silver are trading hands at a fast pace on the commodity exchanges throughout the world. Now that the price of silver has been set loose, forces are in motion to dull the world's appetite for silver. At the same time there is strong incentive to provide greater quantities of silver to satisfy the world's hunger' for the metal.

Contract No. H0110929 was awarded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in February, 1971, to DeTer Company, Incorporated, of Mountain Lakes, N. J. The contract provided for the modification of the contractor's Model 5000 Pressure Foam Generator to fit it for the suppression of coal dust in mines, a detailed testing program in a working coal mine, and for additional modifications and testing for the suppression of fires in coal mines. The contractual program was completed in April, 1972. The results of the dust suppression tests showed conclusively that the modified DeTer equipment effectively reduced the level of respirable dust in a working coal mine well below the present and future acceptable levels set by the Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. The fire tests, carried out in a simulated mine entryway erected on the surface, demonstrated the ability of the DeTer equipment in suppressing fires of varying degrees of severity within an acceptably short time.

In recent years, many individuals looking into the future of the blasting industry have predicted that the most likely next technological breakthrough would be the use of high precision, digitally controlled detonators. This seemed logical since not only was there much room for improvement in this area, but any significant improvement in delay timing could yield great benefits in productivity and control of adverse effects. And in fact, within the past two or three years, such electronic detonators have been introduced in the field by a number of different manufacturers. These systems are currently being used in many routine blasting operations around the world which are being closely watched and evaluated.

Residual stresses observed in rocks often result from non-compatible initial strains. These stresses can be determined when the incompatibility tensor associated with the initial strain tensor is known. The residual stresses in a cylindrical rock sample can be computed the sample is considered small enough for its incompatibility tensor to be constant. Les contraintes résiduelles, dont on observe couramment les manifestations dans les roches, résultent souvent de l’existence de déformations initiales non-compatibles.
