The Otago and Southland lignite deposits represent by far the largest known fossil energy resources in New Zealand. Despite their size they have remained virtually untouched since exploration in the 1970s and 1980s defined their extent. In total there is an estimated 10.9 billion tonnes of lignite in 13 defined fields in Otago and Southland. Much of the exploration work only targeted seams at shallow depth and it is highly probable that there are further resources at depth in the fields that have been explored to date.   L&M Lignite Limited (L&M) holds exploration permits over a number of lignite deposits and is currently engaged in pre-feasibility studies to investigate the potential of the lignites for gasification. L&M is focussing its studies on the Hawkdun and Ashers-Waituna deposits. Coal quality in these deposits, particularly Ashers-Waituna, is highly suitable for gasification. In total the two deposits contain 1647 Mt of potentially recoverable lignite. L&M has engaged a variety of consultants to progress this project. The Hawkdun and Ashers-Waituna deposit databases have been re-evaluated and the resources remodelled. Further drilling has been carried out and the coal quality database has been expanded. The baseline project is to develop a mine to feed a plant that will produce liquids, specifically low-sulphur diesel and naptha, using the Fischer-Tropsch process. The project anticipates a staged development of 10 000 barrel per day units, each requiring mining at the rate of 12 700 tonnes of lignite per day. The production of other products including ammonia-urea, methanol, hydrogen and electric power is also under study.

Expert control of grinding and flotation plants has been successfully used in the minerals industry since the 1970?s. The earliest of these systems were written in a hard-coded fashion in FORTRAN, BASIC or Pascal. Second generation systems were built using the first experimental expert system shells that were being developed in the artificial intelligence community. Later systems were deployed in expert system shells designed for real-time processing plants that also included the ability to model the process with neural network models and optimize setpoint selection through the use of genetic algorithms. Significant performance increases have been achieved using these systems, but in general, they suffer from the static nature of their rules and to a degree the process models also. Typical improvements quoted in the literature suggest throughput rate increases of 4 to 8 percent and recovery increases of 1 to 4 percentage points. In over 30 years of designing and installing expert systems we have never seen performance numbers less that these but have often seen numbers in excess of the high values. However, once the system has been installed and tuned up the performance usually does not improve much thereafter. Granted, the initial increases in throughput rate and recovery are significant but a question always lingers, that is, can the expert strategies be modified further to squeeze a little more improvement out of the system. The answer to this question is a resounding yes, however a complete understanding of what we do well as designers and operators of expert control systems is required as well as how we can improve upon our best practices is required to move us from the performance plateau we have been on for a number of years to a new higher level of performance.

Estimation techniques such as polygonal, triangular prism, trapezoid, isopach maps, and inverse distance methods are often used in ore or industrial minerals deposit evaluation. These techniques do not express the variability of the deposit and do not allow a determination of the reliability of the estimates. However, geostatistical methods can express a measure of the error associated with the estimates, by finding weighting coefficients for a given mining block, and can also help with data configuration that minimizes the error. This work addresses an application study on the quality and reserve characteristics of the cement raw materials of the Adana Cement Factory in Adana, Turkey, based on the spatial distribution and variability of the chemical components (Si02, CaO, A1203, Fe203). The study has been carried out using a geostatistical procedure that is useful for site assessment, characterization, and monitoring situations where data are collected spatially. Directional and omnidirectional experimental variograms of the cement raw material variables showed that neither strong geometric nor severe zonal anisotropy exists in the data. The most evident spatial dependence structure expressing the continuity for omnidirectional experimental variograms were characterized by exponential and spherical variogram models. These models have been used in cross¬-validation analysis, which proved that these models, their parameters, and kriging parameters are applicable for the study area. Quality contour maps of the deposits at given levels underground were estimated using a kriging interpolation technique. Anomalies such as bullseyes and drift were not observed in the maps that were generated. Kriged maps showed the spatial distribution of quality continuity and variability of the deposits. Grade-tonnage curves and total tonnage estimates in the particular grade were determined using ordinary kriging in order to improve the mining operation and planning. Consequently, local uncertainty and the probability of extreme values occurring are tools of prime importance for the mine planning, the optimum mix of raw materials coming from different quarry stopes.

The classical definition of a beneficiation engineer as one who treats an ore in order to separate and discard worthless fractions by essentially physical means is obsolete. Technology in the profession has advanced so rapidly during the last two or three years that educators have not been able to coin definitions to keep up with the pace. In the past some people have hesitated to include leaching or even agglomeration as minerals beneficiation, because of the major chemical changes involved. This view has fallen by the wayside, especially because a majority in the profession have become actively involved in extraction and pyro processes that go far beyond the original definition of mineral dressing. To say that there is a great revival of interest in leaching is putting it mildly, for the uranium business, like the gold business, now depends almost entirely on leaching. This revival of leaching, long overdue in mineral engineering, has been stimulated this year, especially as a result of the relaxation of security restrictions surrounding the recovery of uranium from its ores. It has brought new unit operations to minerals beneficiation, namely ion exchange and solvent extraction. These operations have appeared as resin-in-pulp, solvent-in-pulp, and liquid-liquid systems. In many cases these leaching and separation procedures, now reaching the production stage, have been engineered by minerals beneficiators. The trend toward leaching has also had impact on the technology of beneficiating other nonferrous minerals, especially copper, manganese, columbium, tantalum, nickel, cobalt, titanium, and the rare earths.

AS a result of drilling operations during 1943, West Texas again added sufficient new oil reserves to replace the oil produced during the year, but failed to maintain its position in currently available reserves because the deeper discoveries will require years for development. Drilling failed to provide the additional oil necessary to meet the increase in current and anticipated market demand. Although 13.3 per cent of the total footage drilled was in wildcat exploration, the ratio of oil discoveries to total wildcats was less in 1943 than in 1942, but comparable to that in 1941. Of the 732 field wells completed, 270 were at Slaughter, 55 at Wasson, 45 at Mascho and 31 at North Cowden. As of Dec. 31, 1943, there were 361 drilling wells including 71 wildcat and 290 field wells; 19.7 per cent were wildcats. It is anticipated that the percentage of wildcats of the total wells will be higher during 1944 than in either 1942 or 1943. Tables 3 and 4 present a three-year comparison of drilling activity and illustrate the downward trend of development that has been in effect during that time. Because of development lag in the deeper Ordovician fields, several years elapse before 2 sufficient number of wells is completed to give a substantial producing rate. As these new oil reserves cost more to find, and will cost more to produce on a barrel basis than the oil marketed during the year, their reserve replacement value to the industry is less in money. Costs While complete costs for deeper drilling are not yet available for analysis, it is evi- dent from the data on drilling rates to comparable depths, contract prices, and general increases in costs, that the cost of drilling has risen approximately 20 per cent during the year. One representative drilling contractor estimates that the average drilling time on a 5000-ft. field well has increased nearly one third and that out-of-pocket costs have increased a dollar per foot. Three major factors contribute to this increased cost: (I) less experienced labor, (2) deterioration in mechanical equipment and expendable material, and (3) increased contract prices. In the past, when there were more drilling rigs than wells to be drilled, some contractors would cut their drilling profit to keep their personnel and rigs working. As this practice is no longer necessary, the contract prices are adjusted upward to assure a profit. On deep and difficult drilling, contracts are let on a cost plus basis. A number of mechanical difficulties have become evident. Inferior quality of steel used in drill pipe and rock bits has added appreciably to drilling time and cost. Contractors are experiencing delay in obtaining repair work and repair parts for prime movers. As the length of drilling time required an shallow-field wells has not increased in proportion to that on deeper wells, it seems that the medium-sized drilling rig is better adapted mechanically than the heavy one to the work imposed. One of the main deficiencies in the heavy rig equipment is inadequate pump capacity. The central question concerning the health risks associated with mining and processing of taconite ores in the Eastern Mesabi Range is ??does asbestos, of any variety, occur within the gangue mineral population?? Free silica in the form of quartz does exist in the taconite, but silicosis has been relegated to a secondary issue. The focus has shifted to the asbestos minerals and the malignancies that might occur following low-level exposure to dust. Although mineral fibers do exist in the Mesabi taconite ores, Ross, Nolan and Nord conclude ??no asbestos?, as explained in their contribution ??The Search for Asbestos within the Peter Mitchell Taconite Iron Ore Mine, near Babbitt, Minnesota?. Their area of study is located in the eastern Mesabi Range. It is here that the tectonic and metamorphic effects associated with the intrusion of the Duluth Gabbro have been profound. A variety of amphibole minerals have developed as a result of these geological events, some with names recognized within the US Asbestos Standard. The issue tackled by the authors is whether or not these amphiboles are present in the mine and if so whether or not they are asbestiform in habit.

The new AIRDEK (tm) technique for pre-splitting in surface coal mines produces highwall conditions that have greater safety with lower costs for explosives, labor, and drilling. Successful applications have been made in highwalls ranging from 20 to 100 feet or more and in blasthole diameters from 3-1/2 inches to 12 inches.

"In 2011, a site study indicated that the application of Honeywell’s Multivariable Predictive Control Technology (MPC) to the Goldex processing facility would provide significant opportunities for improvement. Grinding MPC was implemented in the SAG Mill in June 2015. This pilot application, called Phase 1, featured one of the first Multivariable Predictive Controllers to be installed in a Canadian mineral processing plant. Since the implementation of MPC, gold recovery from the gravity circuit has increased. MPC contributed to a decrease in flotation feed particle size (120 to 112 µm) and an increase in the SAG feed tonnage (8.5% increase). MPC also increased and stabilized the % solids of the SAG feed, which can have an impact on cost reduction (mechanical maintenance). Additionally, MPC increased productivity, providing grinding operators with more time to perform other tasks. Further anticipated benefits include the standardization of the grinding circuit operation from one team to the next, thereby minimizing circuit disturbances resulting from different operating philosophies. This paper will discuss the advanced control project development and justification, the technology and rapid implementation process, the performance results and the benefits obtained.IntroductionGoldex is an underground mine located near Val-d’Or that is owned and operated by Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (AEM). Between 2008 and 2011, mining focused on the Goldex Extension Zone (GEZ). In 2011, the project was halted due to geotechnical problems; operations ceased until late 2013. Goldex operations resumed in September 2013 with the M and E zones, for which there were 0.7M gold ounces of proven and probable reserves, 2.1M ounces of measured and indicated resources and 1.2M ounces of inferred resources, totalizing 4M ounces. Life expectancy was extended until 2024."

Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) project C25073 was proposed by industry stakeholders seeking a potential solution that improves underground air quality and reduces operational costs associated with technology used to control diesel particulate emissions in the underground coal mining environment.The need to protect workers from diesel particulate matter (DPM) has lead the underground coal mining industry to install disposable filter systems on their vehicles. While the disposable filters are efficient at removing significant amounts of DPM, the following major issues have arisen:- high cost of operations; disposable filters cost $A250–300 each and need to be changed at least once per shift resulting in an estimated cost of up to $A164 M/a, in filters alone, to the NSW underground coal mining industry- improper installation, damaged seals and lack of installing a new filter when the old filter is removed; workers are still being exposed to excessive amounts of DPM.The ACARP project successfully demonstrated significant DPM emissions reduction comparable to the incumbent disposable technology on a proof-of-concept wall-flow diesel particulate filter (DPF) system, as well as satisfactory system robustness when assessed using an industry representative test cycle representing operations of a load haul dump (LHD) vehicle typical of that used by the Australian underground coal industry. It was noted in testing that the technology increased modal NO2 formation, but was compliant over typical operational duty cycles.One of the key benefits with the use of a wall-flow DPF system is its tamper-proof design, mitigating the risk of operating unfiltered diesel plant in poorly ventilated areas. Elimination of the need for continual replacement of disposable filters provides significant operational savings estimated to be up to 80 per cent of the incumbent technology.In addition to the above, the project also delivered a number of significant contributions to the knowledgebase of the Australian and international coal industry with regard to the characterisation of operations and control of emissions.CITATION:Coplin, N, 2017. As one of the four basic sciences, the study of geology is intrinsically worthy as a means of increasing fundamental knowledge of the behaviour and evolution of the universe. Geological knowledge can also be translated into practical outcomes for society such as resource discovery and protection of the environment. Australia has a long tradition of providing very high quality geoscience programs to prepare graduates for a range of occupations. We are, however, reaching a nexus in the way universities should or can deliver engaging programs. This has been triggered by the rapid evolution of the digital world (the Internet of Things), new technologies, unprecedented access to information, better understanding of the processes by which we learn and adapt our thinking, growing complexity in the problems we must face or opportunities to grasp, and university funding models. Designing education programs for the next generation of geologists extends far beyond tinkering with syllabuses. We must develop skills sets that will allow graduates to work in rapidly changing landscapes, but in doing so may have to sacrifice content to build capability in our graduates. Whereas universities must respond to changing demands on graduates by ensuring degree programs contain an appropriate balance of material and high quality of delivery, industry and government must also fulfil their responsibilities to provide additional training programs for graduates to assist their rapid transition into independent professionals. This paper examines various educational issues being considered in developing the new Decadal Plan for the Earth Sciences, and reflects on directions that education is heading in many of our universities.CITATION:Cohen, D R, 2017. Magnetic separation is an age-old technique for mineral beneficiation operations. The existing mathematical models for magnetic separators are quite complicated, and it is very difficult to measure the theoretical separation efficiency. The connectionist approach of modeling, to establish the relationships of the inputs and outputs, is preferred for this kind of problem. Experiments were carried out on a high-intensity roll magnetic separator to develop a database using four input variables (magnetic flux intensity, particle size, splitter position and roll speed) and two output variables (weight recovery and Fe recovery). The artificial neural network (ANN) and statistical methods (MLRG) were used to model the magnetic separation process. For the ANN, the regression coefficient (R2) values between the predicted and measured results were 0.89 and 0.94 for Fe recovery and weight recovery, respectively. Compared to ANN, the multivariable linear regression analysis showed inferior performance in predicting the weight recovery and the Fe recovery. The ANN models for the roll magnetic separator can predict the separation efficiency up to an acceptable limit. These models can be used to modify the operational parameters at mineral beneficiation plants to minimize the effects of variations in the raw material characteristics.

The Porgera gold deposit is an epithermal gold base-metal deposit located in the Enga Province of Papua New Guinea. Gold-silver-sphalerite-galena-pyrite mineralisation is related to stocks and dykes of dioritic composition which have intruded a series of folded marine sediments, mainly shales and siltstones, often with calcareous and carbonaceous horizons, of middle Jurassic to middle Eocene age. The most intensely mineralised zone is at Waruwari Hill, where the mineralisation occurs predominantly as massive mixed sulphide veins, and less frequently as quartz-chlorite veins and as disseminations. Mineralisation occurs in all rock types and several phases of mineralisation have been recognised.

More than 70 km of main line and service tunnels have been excavated to date for crossing the Apennines between Bologna and Florence. A new design and construction approach, known as Analysis of the Controlled Deformation in Rock and Soils, (ADECO-RS), was adopted to tackle the extreme heterogeneity of the ground and the particular stress-strain conditions. The goal of this system is to obtain constant and predictable full section advance rates, even in very poor geology, with the highest possible level of safety and reliability. The execution of this gigantic project required the mobilization of 21 job-sites, with the concurrent operation of 30 excavation headings. The global production rates confirm the high quality of the design and the high level of industrialization reached during the construction stage, levels not previously obtained in similar conditions, using other approaches such as NATM.

This paper is in two parts. The first covers the evolution of dredging leading to the development of the æNZ typeÆ large dredge and the second, current alluvial gold recovery practice in NZ. NZ was the first country in the world to adapt the bucket-ladder dredge to alluvial gold recovery. Between 1857 and 1907, gold worth (at today's NZ price of about NZ$600/ounce*) over $11 billion was exported û from a country with well under one million people at that time. Over 200 small dredges operated, mostly on the Clutha River, around the turn of the century, however by 1940, only 20 or so large machines remained, and the last of these, the 4000 ton 'Kanieri' ceased operations three years ago. Recently recognition of the superior digging power of the hydraulic backhoe and reintroduction of the simple 'trommel and riffleÆ plant with about 80 m3 /hour capacity has led to a proliferation of static and floating plants, there being at least 50 currently in operation on the West Coast and in Otago. There are signs however, that the process of evolution of such small unsophisticated plants into larger, more efficient units has begun again. * At the time of writing (October 1984) NZ$l. 00 = US 50ó. A special type of shotcrete is used to improve the performance of open-type TBM in difficult situations. The Hakamagoshi and Johana tunnels are expressway evacuation tunnels of 3.2 km and 5.1 km in length, respectively (total 9.1 km) that were excavated by one open-type TBM. The geological conditions at the sites were estimated to be good before excavation. However, 95% of the rock turned out to be two ranking orders worse than the estimated classes. Therefore, we used a special shotcrete for bad rock conditions, and succeeded in excavating the tunnel at an average rate of 270 m/month.

The runout of dry blocky rock avalanches produced by planar rockslides affecting a limestone formation with clayey interbeds is analysed by means of distinct element modelling. Numerical analyses are validated by means of the back analysis of a historical rockslide occurred in the investigated area and physical aspects of the phenomenon evidenced by modelling are discussed. Die Steinlawinen werden erzeugt von Rutschungen in einer Kalkstein-Formation mit tonhaltige Schichten betreffen. Die numerischen Berechnungen wurden anhand einer Simulation einer historischen Bergsturzen verifiziert, der sich auf den untersuchten Gebiet ereignete. Auf der Basis der erhaltenen Ergebnisse wurden die physikalischen Aspekte der untersuchten Steinlawinen analysiert.

The new South African Mineral Policy has major implications on the way mineral rent will be collected and shared between the stakeholders in future. Although the policy does not supply details on how this will be done, drastic departures from practices under the previous dispensation require a new approach. For example, there introduction of the ?right to mine? principle implies that the repealed lease consideration concept will be expanded to all minerals. The new policy also makes provision for predetermined standard terms and conditions for all prospecting and mining permissions. It also states that, regardless of whether the mineral rights are state or privately-owned, all prospecting fees and mineral royalties will be determined by state officials after consultation with the registered holder of the mineral rights. This paper proposes a standard mineral royalty formula that complies with the principles mentioned in the White Paper and has been shown to be internationally competitive.

High titania slag is produced from the smelting of ilmenite. These slags contain approximately 85 per cent TiO2 and consist mainly of a M3O5 solid-solution phase. During cooling the slag can decrepitate to a fine particulate material, which decreases the value of the product. Based on X-ray diffraction analyses of the decrepitated slag after cooling, it was found that the M3O5 phase had almost disappeared. The disappearance of the M3O5 phase was linked to oxidation of the slag. A M6O11 phase formed in the decrepitated slag. It is postulated that decrepitation of high titania slag is caused by volume changes due to the oxidation of the M3O5 phase in the slag.
