"The number of investigations reported during the past year indicates that control of the health hazard due to abnormal air conditions is still a matter of serious consideration in the mining, metallurgical, and allied industries.Australia. - In an investigation into the health and working conditions of employees in the mining industry of Tasmania and Victoria3, it was found that although pulmonary tuberculosis may occur early in life, silicosis is e disease of slow evolution and does not appear frequently under the ace of 40. A period of at least ten years in the industry was found necessary to produce silicosis, and in no case was the disease found in those who had not worked underground. A very high incidence of silicosis was found in all fields among those who had worked underground 20 years and longer. There was some evidence that silicosis complicated by tuberculosis may occur earlier than uncomplicated silicosis.England. - In a paper presented before the Section on Occupational Diseases of the British Medical Association, Dr. E. L. Middleton, the medical inspector of factories, called attention4 to the occurrence of silicosis in various industries throughout the country.punitive on some quite harmless industries. Thus Middleton says: ""Where the amount of dust is small the action of the phagocytes is likely to be effective, but where it is great . . ."" What dosage is indicated by ""small"" and ""great"" in this connexion? If the meaning of ""small"" were known, would it be correct to go on to say, as he does, ""each successive dose of silica produces a summation of effects""? Then, again, would it be fair to say ""a comparatively brief period of exposure may be the only determining factor""? What, in minutes, hours, or days per week, per month,' or year, is intended by ""a comparatively brief period""? ""Intermittency of the process"" is another expression used in summing up the reasons for and against a standardization of air purity by a gravimetric process or enumeration of the particles; the arguments against such a standardization are, by Middleton, considered strong, but they are by no means convincing to us. A standard has been accepted in respect of the amount of lead in milligrams per 10 cubic metres of air; Dr. Ronald Lane showed in another paper read that adherence to this makes the occurrence of poisoning highly improbable. Mavrogordato has placed on record figures of silica dust at different stages of the improvements in the workings of the Rand mines, and such a control is in constant operation in them today.We emphasize these points because apparently the Government has taken the unusual course of legislating first and postponing inquiry to a later date, as in the ""Various Industries (Silicosis) Scheme, 1939."" The insurance companies also have a considerable interest in the matter of compensation for the silicosis risk. It has been established that significant time-dependent stope convergence may occur over time periods of hours and days in certain hard-rock gold and platinum mines. The source of this time-dependent behaviour appears to be associated with both pre-existing discontinuities and with mining-induced fractures that form near the stope face. These induced fractures may be associated with blasting processes and may also be formed in response to high stress concentrations in the unmined regions immediately ahead of the stope face. In shallower platinum mining operations, time-dependent behaviour is, however, observed to be much less marked unless some form of specific mining-induced fracturing occurs. One particular case of considerable interest is the time-dependent behaviour that is found to be associated with the formation and deployment of crush pillars. The purpose of the paper is to present a simple limit-equilibrium computational model of this behaviour that is sensitive to both the formation sequence and the size of planned crush pillars in a mine layout. This model provides a useful means to optimize the sizing of crush pillars, and at the same time may be used to identify potentially hazardous circumstances in which pillars may not crush in a stable manner.

The ability to optimise a concentrator from mill feed to final products requires a simulator which integrates comminution, classification and separation modelling. In order to model this range of processes, such a simulator must handle a variety of information about the ore. The AMIRA P9 project has developed a whole-of-concentrator simulation capability which brings together a texture-based model of mineral liberation, quantitative X-ray micro-tomography analysis to measure the inputs required by this model, and a multi-component simulator software framework. In the context of this approach, the term ?multi-component? implies the ability of the simulation to handle many particle properties simultaneously; for example size, composition, density, floatability etc. The simulation software framework provides the means to manage the flow of data around a circuit flowsheet, allowing each process model to access the information relevant to that particular model. A case study based on plant data from a gold-bearing pyrite concentrator is used to demonstrate the capabilities of the multi-component approach in simulating circuits which contain comminution and separation processes.

"Mine planning is a multidisciplinary procedure that aims to guarantee the profitability of a mining operation in changing and uncertain conditions. Mine plans are normally classified as long-term, intermediate-term, and short-term plans, and many factors affect the preciseness of these plans and cause deviations in reaching the objectives. Commodity price is the heart of mine planning, but it has a changing and uncertain nature. Therefore, the determination of mine plans in the presence of uncertain mineral price is a challenge. A robust mine plan reduces the risk of early mine closure. A procedure is presented to determine the value at risk (VaR) in any possible mine planning alternative. VaR is considered together with downside risk and upside potential in order to select the most profitable and least risky plan. The model is tested on a small iron ore deposit. IntroductionMining projects are normally evaluated with the objective of maximizing economic value, as measured by the net present value (NPV). The aim of mine planning is to develop a yearly extraction plan that guides the mining operation to the highest NPV (Dagdelen, 2007; Yarmuch and Ortiz, 2011). This plan considers the technical constraints such as blending requirements, block sequencing, and pit slope (Caccetta and Hill 2003). Thus, the mine plan affects the economics and the payback period of mining operations.Mine planning is a procedure based on which the profitability of the mining operation is guaranteed in changing and uncertain conditions (McCarter, 1992). However, conventional mine planning ignores the volatility and uncertainty of future commodity prices and does not allow for managerial flexibility. It is common practice to assume a deterministic and constant commodity price through the mine life. The problem with this approach is that the commodity price is the heart of the mine planning procedure and governs the profitability and feasibility of the operation; thus ignoring price volatility will result in a sub-optimal mine plan."

A longwall mining operation went under a tall, self-supporting and free-standing wireless communication transmission tower. In anticipation of that the ground subsidence process might affect the transmission tower, the mining company took a proactive approach to mitigate the expected subsidence influences. The efforts include prediction of surface subsidence process at the location of the tower, assessment of stability, structural integrity and functionality of the tower structures, and design and implementation of mitigation measures. The intension of this paper is to demonstrate the techniques that can be used to assess and mitigate the subsidence effects on tall self-supporting and free standing tower structures.

Tapira Mine (Tapira, MG, Brazil) is the largest phosphate ore and concentrate producer in Brazil. The mine is an open pit, which until recently operated with a large equipment fleet and now uses a smaller fleet operated by contractors. The annual production reaches 17 Mt of ore plus 14 Mt of waste at a stripping ratio of 0.82. Defining the geological boundaries and forecasting the annual production can be a difficult task if not performed on a reliable model. The geological model has been totally reviewed as well as the estimation process. Ordinary Kriging has been used to build the new block model with P2O5 and contaminant grades. After estimation, block model validation and classification criteria definition to assess resources and reserves, the result is given by the life-of-mine plan is defined after pit optimisation and design. The Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm implemented in the NPV Scheduler was used to define the long-term production targets based on the main parameters P2O5 and the contaminants that are just important to the beneficiation process.

A dynamic testing program was performed to evaluate installation procedures, assess capacity of 610-mm (24-inch) diameter open ended steel pipe to evaluate set-up and provide minimum pile tip elevation based on the dynamic testing results. The program was performed for a marine terminal project consisting of a 570-meter (1900-foot) long, overwater railroad trestle. The project location is Santa Marta, Colombia, South America. The subsurface profile generally consisted of 4m (12 ft.) of water and soft to hard silty clays. The piles were installed to an approximate tip elevation of -22 meters (MSL). Three piles were initially dynamically monitored during installation and then later monitored during restrike driving to evaluate pile drivability and bearing capacity including time related capacity increases due to soil "set-up". Knowledge of change in pile capacity with time after end of initial driving is important for design of pile foundations.

"In recent years, FFE Minerals has designed, installed and commissioned several large grinding mill circuits. This paper discusses the issues related to the erection and commissioning of large grinding mill circuits. The three circuits discussed are Collahuasi in Chile, Minera Los Pelambres in Chile, and Century Zinc in Australia. These circuits include large SAG and ball mills with both gear and gearless drive arrangements, as well as, both trunnion and shell supported mills. Aspects of these features are discussed with respect to their impact on installation and commissioning. While the normal challenges of mill erection and start-up were experienced, there were also a few unexpected challenges encountered partly due to the large scale of the equipment. An overview of the equipment and design ratings of these circuits is also provided.COLLAHUASIOverviewThe Collahuasi mills were started-up in November of 1998. The site is located in the Andes Mountains at an elevation of 4300 meters. The grinding circuit includes two lines featuring one SAG mill and one ball mill for each line. The circuit features a recycle conveyor around the SAG mills with provision for adding a pebble crusher in the future. The design tonnage of the grinding plant is 60,000 MTPD with an ore BWI of 10.5 kWh/MT.The SAG mills are 32’ x 15’ (1 3’ EGL) with 10,800 HP drives. The drive arrangements are dual pinion through pneumatic clutches. The mills are driven by low speed synchronous motors with CCV variable speed drives. The SAG mills are trunnion supported and use hydrostatic lubrication. Feed to the SAG mills is via a rock-box type feed chute on a cart. The mills discharge on to trommel screens with a bucket wheel to remove the oversize.The ball mills are 22’ x 36.5’ (36’ EGL) with 12,500 HP drives. The drive arrangements are dual pinion through pneumatic clutches. The fixed speed mills are driven by low speed synchronous motors with GE Quadramatic load sharing drives. The ball mills are shell-supported and feature multi-pad bearings with hydrodynamic lubrication. The mills are fed via a rubber lined sump box with feed spout on a cart. The ball mills also discharge on to trommel screens. Twenty-six inch (26”) diameter hydrocyclones are in closed circuit with the ball mills."

Pumpable roof supports provide an alternative approach to secondary support in underground mining. Unlike all other supports that are either partially or fully prefabricated prior to being transported into the mine, the pumpable support is fabricated in place in the mine entry. This reduces the underground material handling efforts and thus the injuries historically associated with in-mine support construction. On-site fabrication also facilitates application of the support in areas that are inaccessible to transportation equipment such as scoops or rail cars, making it ideal for many bleeder applications. One of the main advantages of the pumpable support is that it fully bridges from the mine floor to the roof, thereby eliminating the requirement of ?topping off? the support with wooden wedges or crib blocks that soften most other support responses. This report examines the development of modern pumpable roof support technology and provides a full description of the performance capabilities of each of the support products now on the market.

"1.1 Location and Transportation ServicesNanisivik Mines Ltd. is located at latitude 73°, 3,200 km north of Montreal and 700 km north of the Arctic circle, on the south side of Strathcona Sound, which is an arm of Admiralty Inlet, in Northern Baffin Island. The orebody and mill site are 4 km distant from Strathcona Sound which provides deep water anchorage for ocean transportation of concentrate to Europe during the short northern shipping season from mid-July to mid-October.The operations and the resident community have direct jet aircraft service from Montreal two days per week, and local nights connect with other Arctic communities in the northern Baffin region. Bulk supplies and general cargo are delivered in the summer shipping season.1.2 HistoryThe Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, now Kidd Creek Mines Limited, staked claims in the Nanisivik area in 1957 and carried out exploration through to 1968. After the Kidd Creek orebody was found, Texas Gulf optioned the property in 1972 to Mineral Resources International Inc. (MRI), which undertook further exploration and completed a feasibility study.Nanisivik Mines Ltd. was formed in 1975, with MRI as the majority shareholder and minority shareholdings held by Metallgesellschaft, Billiton and Texas Gulf. Strathcona Mineral Services Limited was retained to manage the project during both the construction and operational phases."

The mechanical behaviour of schistose sedimentary rocks such as slate show a great amount of anisotropy. Hence, the schistocity plane is essential when investigating the mechanical behaviour of such rocks. The presence of such rocks in civil projects causes non-symmetric deformation and their behaviour is unpredictable. In this research, the anisotropic strength behaviour of slates is studied. Uniaxial and triaxial tests were conducted on specimens having orientation angles (ß) of 0, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 degrees. The triaxial tests were done at confining pressures of 3, 5 and 10 MPa. The effect of anisotropy on uniaxial and triaxial strength, cohesion, angle of internal friction and Hoek and Brown's m and s constants were investigated. The results indicate that the strength of slates in uniaxial and triaxial compression exhibit a U-shaped anisotropic behaviour. In-order to evaluate the most suitable criterion for predicting the anisotropic strength of rocks in uniaxial and triaxial compression, an investigation was carried out on various criteria. In uniaxial compression, the Liao and Huong and Ramamurthy criteria had good agreements with the test results. In triaxial compression the Hoek and Brown and Mc Lamore criteria had better agreements with the test results. It should be noted that in-order to utilize these criteria, a large number of tests must be carried out. However, as the Ramamurthy criterion needs fewer test results, it can be the most suitable for investigating the behaviour of anisotropic rocks in triaxial compression. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data that were averaged by the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were received. After the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) initiated an overview of the Caltrans Bridge Design Specifications (BDS) and bridge seismic design practice in California. This overview is continuing under the direction of the Applied Technologies Council (ATC-32), to review and revise as necessary existing standards, performance criteria, specifications, and practices for design and construction of new bridge structures within California. The ATC-32 project began in August 1991 and is expected to be completed in 1995. Since 1990, Caltrans project-specific seismic criteria have been developed and implemented on the I-280 and I-480 projects in San Francisco. Caltrans and an independent seismic safety review panel continue to develop and implement these criteria on other projects. In 1991 and 1992, project-specific seismic criteria were used on the I-880 reconstruction project in Oakland. The seismic safety review panel considered the I-880 seismic design criteria a state-of-the-art methodology to ensure seismic safety against collapse of bridge structures subjected to a maximum credible seismic event. This paper highlights the 1992 "I-880 Reconstruction Project Seismic Design Criteria Review" report prepared by the Seismic Safety Review Panel and Caltrans Division of Structures and will compare pre-1989 BDS and AASHTO methodologies to the I-880 criteria.

This paper forms the second of a series, in which it is proposed to communicate the results of an extensive research into the influence of alloying elements on the physical properties of lead, now being carried out in the Metallurgy School of the University of Melbourne.Some general comments on this research were made by the present writer as an introduction to the first contribution by R. S. Russell*: It was there pointed out that it was the intention to prepare lead as pure as possible, to determine its properties and then to make alloys with the various elements added singly, and in various combinations, in order to determine the effect of each. This line of action is still being pursued.It occurred to the writer, however, that this fundamental attack might, with advantage, be accompanied by a parallel investigation in which lead of commercial purity would form the basis material. An integrated palynological and sedimentological investigation of four wells from the eastern margin of the Gippsland Basin has resulted in a scheme for classification of palynofacies in this area. Thirteen different palynofacies assemblages are recognised and assigned to particular environments based on the enclosing sediments, which range from alluvial, through coastal barrier to continental shelf environments. Close correlation is observed between the interpreted energy regime of the palynofacies assemblage, and that of the enclosing sediments. Assemblages characterised as reworking surfaces can be correlated with unconformity producing events (ie tectonic activity associated with the opening of the Tasman Sea), and some of the minor eustatic sea level Changes.

THE object of this paper is to review certain features in connection with the mining of narrow lodes, say up to 20 ft. or so wide. The types of ore-body to which it is intended to refer are those which occur. chiefly as fissure or shear-Iodes-that is, those lodes which are to be found in belts of country which have been subjected to dynamic stresses, resulting in the formation of cracks and fissures, into some of which has been concentrated sufficient metal-bearing material to form ores. Very frequently one of the walls of such a lode is found to be a fault, or plane of differential movement.The first point which comes up for consideration is the shaft and its position. From the information afforded by the prospecting which has been done on a lode relative to the dip, nature of country, &c., the position of the main hauling shaft can be determined. For purposes of general utility the hangingwall is generally chosen, if a vertical shaft, though, on account of freedom from creeps, the foot-wall would be safer. Vertical shafts are preferable to underlie shafts in many ways; but wherethe lode maintains a flat dip the cost of cross-cutting at the various levels becomes very heavy'. Water quality standards for some of the substances likely to be discharged to natural waters by the mining industry are discussed. After briefly examining how uses of water can be affected by discharges, standards for suspended solids and turbidity, pH, and toxic materials are considered. Heavy metals are examined in some detail because of recent public concern regarding their discharge. Caution is given in connection with their analysis at the very low concentrations required for management of natural waters. Finally, the issues of what constitutes a water right concentration compliance breach, and the appropriateness of biological monitoring as a condition on a water right are raised.

"Quinsam coal mine is located about 25 km west of Campbell River on the east coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Using continuous miners in a fully mechanized retreat room-and-pillar operation, it produces low sulphur, “super compliance” thermal coal for domestic and international markets at a rate of about 2600 t/d. Currently, 65 people work at the site, including some corporate employees.Opened in 1993, the Quinsam mine had a dismal safety record until 1997. Lost time injuries and medical aids were unacceptably high. In 1998, a change in corporate structure brought a change in safety attitudes; a total and unequivocal commitment to safety as job No.1 by corporate and site management. This commitment was clearly spelled out in a new mission statement, circulated to all employees by the new President and CEO, David Slater: “Safety is job No. 1; Production flows from safety; and Think safety at all times.” As well as re-defining workplace safety practices, QCC tightened engineering controls and enforced strict adherence to mine plans.This paper provides a general background to the mining operation, and describes the safety practices that have resulted in an enviable safety record in recent years, reflected by provincial and national recognition."
