There are about 400 multi-storey buildings founded on wooden piles in the city centre of Turku in Finland. Soil conditions are variable from hard rock to very soft clay. Due to the soil conditions and ground water lowering there are basically four different types of underpinning projects. Under dimensioned cohesion piles in a deep clay layer, decaying cohesion piles, a combination of these two reasons and decaying end bearing piles in a thin clay layer area. Many different execution methods have been used such as impact driving, jacking and drilling and combinations of these.

Geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) is a kind of waterproofing material used widely in engineering. The waterproof mechanism is understood in terms of bentonite particles becoming a water-obstructcolloid layer after they absorb water and swell. The swell stress, however, has not been determined directly till now. In our experiment, the swell stresses of the GCL under saturated and water absorbing conditions are measured directly using a custom-made instrument. The results show that (1) the instrument designed by the authors performed satisfactorily and the test results are reproducible; and, (2) The trend line of swell stress variation with time can be divided into three segments. The first segment is characterized by a quick increase of the swell force in the first 0?50 hours. The swell stress increases by 7.00×10-4?1.00×10-3 Mpa / hour. The second segment shows a slow increase of the swell stress during the 50?1730 hours. The swell force increases by 7.54×10-6?2.02×10-5Mpa / hour. The third segment is characterized by little variation in the swell stress after 1730 hours. In this segment, the average value of the swell stress measurements is 0.0719Mpa and the maximum value is 0.0729Mpa. It is suggested that the swell stress is mainly raised by water entering the pores among montmorillonite particles and the interstitial layers in individual montmorillonite crystals, leading to an increase in volume and manifested as a stress on the surrounding materials.

The California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) evaluated several pile foundation schemes for supporting the structures along the realignment of Interstate 880. The project replaces the double-decked (Cypress) viaduct collapsed in Oakland, California during the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. Structural support demands led to the selection of steel pipe piles (16-, 24-, and 42-inch-(406-, 610- and 1067-mm-)diameter), filled with concrete and steel reinforcement. Deep penetrations required through layers of very dense/cemented sands in some locations, caused serious drivability and pile integrity concerns. The need for large pile driving hammers and large diameter steel pipe piles pushed the engineers well beyond local experience. Such questions as the feasibility of driving the pipes closed-ended through dense upper strata and quantifying the effects of installation on the long-term capacities of the piles led Caltrans to develop a comprehensive pile test program to address the design and construction issues effectively. The results were furnished to prospective bidders on the production stages of the ensuing contracts.

In multiphase ternary diffusion studies, plots of the variation bf the composition on the isotherm constitutes one of the most effective methods of presenting experimental results, especially if such plots are made in a manner which relates the composition path on the isotherm with the diffusion layer structure in the couple. Unfortunately, if different conventions for plotting are used serious misinterpretations occur readily, causing apparent disagreement between investigators who actually share the same viewpoint. A common convention for mapping these diffusion paths is needed at this time because with the increasing use of the electron-probe X-ray microanalyzer, a much greater number of ternary diffusion studies can be expected in the near future. In an effort to prevent unnecessary confusion in the future litera- ture, a convention for these plots is proposed, as outlined below. A hypothetical example of the use of these conventions is given in Fig. 1 where the path of composition through the diffusion structure of the 100 pct A/50 pct B, 50 pct C couple is plotted on the appropriate isotherm of the ABC system. The lower case letters relate the region in the diffusion layer structure to the appropriate composition on the ternary isotherm. 1) The diffusion path is plotted on the isothermal section corresponding to the diffusion temperature of the couple. 2) The terminal compositions of the plotted diffusion path are the initial compositions of the couple halves—provided infinite boundary conditions are maintained. If, in either couple half, infinite conditions are not maintained, then the path terminates at the composition of the exterior surface of the couple. If, at this surface, the composition varies with time or if the plotted path is time dependent, then the diffusion time should be noted beside the plotted path. 3) A solid line crossing a single phase field (e.g., line a-b in Fig. 1) denotes an existing layer of that phase in the diffused couple. 4) A dashed line crossing a two-phase field parallel to the tie lines (e.g., line g-h) represents an interface between the two phases with interfacial compositions designated by the ends of the tie-line. The line represents no spatial extent. 5) A solid line crossing a two-phase field so as to cut tie lines (e.g., line b-c or line j-k) represents a locally equilibrated columnar two-phase layer. The solid line should cut those tie lines which correspond to the lateral interfacial equilibria along the columnar

A new method of constructing retaining walls, in-situ, prior to excavation has been developed. This "Vertical Earth Reinforcement Technique" VERT, has been demonstrated at a full scale test wall at the National Geotechnical Experimentation Site at Texas A&M University. This 10 meter high wall, was constructed of elements of soil mixing in an array that forced composite behavior between the soil mixed elements and the in-situ soils. Inclinometers and extensometers were used to verify the performance of the wall. The construction and results of the testing are presented.

"SynopsisThe last commodities supercycle (2003 to 2011) was characterized by a belief in volume at any cost, where absolute output was deliberately prioritized over productivity considerations. This practice fuelled overoptimistic forecasting and planning, which in turn contributed to the economic crisis that followed. The sudden collapse of commodity prices has resulted in mining companies scrambling to find the right balance between optimizing current operations and preserving sufficient flexibility to grasp future opportunities. The runaway costs of building and operating mines have almost squeezed out profit margins, while lower ore grades are inflating production costs. Mining companies therefore need to look at the business with fresh eyes, and develop strategies to attract equity capital as traditional approaches are simply not working anymore. This is especially so in the context of a dwindling investor base that continues to demand greater returns, despite a significantly lower appetite for risk. This paper revisits the micro-economic concepts and demonstrates how pressure from shareholders to prioritize output contributed to spiralling costs and value destruction. Practical techniques are described to model cost curves to optimize a Mineral Resource endowment and address the need to rightbalance a business and preserve agility.IntroductionHenry Lazenby (2014) for the Mining Weekly writes, ‘Bruised and battered, the global mining industry today is undergoing a sea change. Practices and policies that might have worked wonders in the past are not as relevant today, and new approaches to running profitable mining operations need to be found.’ One significant practice the mining industry had during the last commodities supercycle (2003 to 2011) was chasing volume at any cost; absolute output was deliberately prioritized over productivity considerations (Goldsmith, 2013). In December, 1934, Mr. R. Sussex extruded some silver lead alloy wires in order to determine their electrical resistance. After the determinations had been made each wire was threaded through a sheet of paper on which the composition was noted. The wires were placed in a more or less tangled mass in a cupboard in March, 1935. It was not until September, 1936, that they were re-examined, and it was found that during the eighteen months some of the wires had corroded very badly. It was not until March, 1938, that the wires and the corrosion product could be examined, and the results are given in the following pages. It is of interest to note that none of the numerous silver-lead alloys which have been used for creep testing in the rolled condition have shown a similarphenomenon. The silver content of the rolled alloys was, however, never greater than 0·1%.GENERAL APPEARANCE OF THE CORRODED WIRESThe wires contained 0·1% up to 28% of silver, and a general examination showed that the corrosion had progressed farther the higher the silver content. This can be seen in Fig. 1, which is a photograph taken in March, 1938, of typical wires at a 'magnification of five diameters. In the early stages the corrosive action seems to be localized and an area of grey, yellow or reddish brown powder appears. The grey corrosion product is by far the one, most frequently seen, and in the later stages the only one visible from the outside. The reddish coloured product is sometimes seen on the residual metallic centre when the grey product has been broken away.The irregular extent of the corrosion can be seen in Fig. 2, which shows (natural size) the 5% silver wire after standing two years. The corroded parts are seen to be much thicker than the slightly corroded ones. The corrosion product, being non-metallic, is quite brittle and falls away from the wire on bending. In the extreme case the' whole wire has corroded and presents a cracked appearance as seen in Fig. 1 (281% silver).An approximate idea of the extent of corrosion can be obtained by measuring the diameter of the corroded part. "This paper describes the general layout of the environmental monitoring scheme at Devco 's No. 26 Colliery, including wall face ventilation, fan performance and methane drainage, and then goes on to discuss the sensors, the outstation layout, the surf ace control room and the protection of the system.IntroductionCape Breton coal mines have been pioneers in the use of the latest technology in mining coal on this continent. To mention just one example, continuous methane monitoring at the coal face was started in 1976 and the idea of automatically stopping the face conveyor during high gas levels using the face signalling system was conceived and developed by CBDC engineers.With the introduction of remote environmental monitoring, No. 26 Colliery will be the first underground coal mine in Canada and possibly in North America to have computer-based comprehensive environmental monitoring.Traditionally, surveillance of the mine environment has been based mainly on periodic checks by portable or hand-held monitors. Although this method proved adequate, it has some limitations, namely:1) restricted 'number of observations and samples;2) relatively long time between taking measurements and availability of results for assessment.With remote monitoring, the above limitations are overcome because (a) monitoring is continuous and (b) monitored data are updated quickly (typically 5-7 sec.). Remote monitoring also provides a centralized 'information center' at the surface from where the entire mine environment can be monitored. Details of modes in which data can be displayed and features available at the location will be discussed later in the paper."

Current practice in mining frozen, underground placers is to support the mine openings by leaving remnant pillars, which are kept frozen to maintain their stability. These pillars may be partially extracted depending on mining conditions, but this practice may be risky, and roof falls are common. Instead of allowing the mined-out areas to cave, the extracted entries could be filled with waste material, which would then be frozen, using cold ventilation air. A finite difference model for analyzing the effects of various parameters on the freezing of backfill in underground mines in the Arctic has been developed and tested. The model also accounts for properties unique to a frozen rock mass, including those that change with temperature. Examination of the characteristics of ice-cemented mining waste materials as backfill indicates that with proper engineering control, a backfill system can be designed for use in production mines. The system will allow increased extraction ratio while maintaining the stability of underground openings with minimum heat impact on the surroundings. These simulated results establish the relationships among the strength, the temperature, and the freezing characteristics of a given material. When coupled with site observations these relationships will facilitate the optimal design of ore pillar recovery methods.

Underground longwall mining of coal causes large scale disturbance of the surrounding rock mass. The disturbance can increase the rock mass permeability through a reduction on the stress as well as formation of new fractures in the rock. Methane gas contained in the disturbed rock mass can migrate towards the low pressure mine workings and present an explosion hazard. This paper describes the application of a finite difference program to develop a geomechanical model that predicts permeability changes within the rock mass. The calculated permeabilities are used as input to a reservoir simulator that models methane desorption from the coal matrix, methane release from the rock layers and flow towards the mine excavations. The model also considers the basic characteristics of the mine ventilation network. The geomechanical model uses empirical relationships between fracture permeability and stress to calculate permeability changes around a longwall face. The extent of rock failure is determined using a strain softening model that considers both rock matrix and bedding plane failure. The cave rock (gob) is modeled as a compressible, granulated material. The calculated horizontal and vertical permeabilities around the longwall face are averaged and used as one of the inputs to the reservoir model. The reservoir model was developed and calibrated against records of methane flow at a study mine in southwestern Pennsylvania. Good correlation between actual gas production and model outputs has been achieved. The modeling approach provides a basis for estimating methane inflow and optimizing control measures.

Coal samples taken from the No. 2 Seam and No. 4 Seam in a South African colliery were tested in a rotary triboelectrostatic separator. The two-stage triboelectrostatic separation results using the -177 µm size fraction reduced No. 2 Seam coal containing about 30.4 per cent ash to a clean product of 8.9 per cent and 13.1 per cent ash with combustible recoveries of 9.6 per cent and 30.7 per cent respectively. The same separation approach on No. 4 seam feed coal, which contained 36 per cent ash, produced a clean coal product with 10.8 per cent ash at a combustible recovery of 6.0 per cent. Petrographic tests show a significant improvement in the vitrinite content and a reduction in visible minerals encountered when using the triboelectrostatic separator, with about 53 per cent vitrinite reporting to the clean fraction for No. 2 Seam compared to the feed content of 21 per cent, and a 54 per cent vitrinite in the clean No. 4 Seam from a feed content of 21 per cent. Significant sulphur reductions were also observed after separation in both coal samples, with a better separation in the second-stage coal products.

Undisturbed minor sedimentary structures-cross-bedding, ripplemarking, scour-and-fill, slumping-are present in most of the rock types in the Willyama Series of the Broken Hill district and in the orebodies.This indicates that there has not been any significant movement of mineral matter within or into the rocks during or after metamorphism, that the rocks have not flowed during tectonic deformation or during metamorphism, and that the ore is an original sedimentary deposit in its sedimentary position.Sedimentary processes, depositional and mechanical, are indicated to explain the deposition of sedimentary metallic minerals and their concentration into large masses. The Broken Hill orebodies show evidence of these processes.INTRODUCTIONI visited Broken Hill for one week in May, 1958, at the invitation of Mr. Haddon F. King, Director of Consolidated Zinc Pty. Ltd. He asked me to examine the rocks and orebodies in the mines and outcrops at Broken Hill for:1. Sedimentary structures that might be used to determine the facing of the banding;2. Indications of the original nature of the rocks if I considered they may have been sedimentary; and3. This paper contains an account of some creep tests on electrolytic lead and some of its alloys. The stresses used in determining creep were 500, 350, and 200 lb. per sq.' in. The alloys contained silver, bismuth, tellurium, antimony and zinc respectively. All were castin vacuo, and tested "as rolled." Tests were done also on electrolytic lead which had been cast in air.The electrolytic lead contained 0.0005% total impurities.The preparation and vacuum casting of this lead have been described in a previous paper in this series. The preparation of the alloys, and the air casting of the electrolytic lead, are described in the next section.EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE.Every effort was made to keep the vacuum-cast specimens from contact with the atmosphere throughout their history.The ingots were stored eIther in a vacuum desiccator or immersed in heavy oil. The creep specimens were coated with vaseline except during rolling, etching and photography, which involved exposure to the atmosphere for about 45 minutes all told.It is not claimed that vaseline is a perfect shield against the intrusion of atmospheric gases. Horizontal stresses are caused by global plate tectonic forces. During 1995 alone, they were largely responsible for closing two U.S. longwall mines. This paper presents six case histories from Pennsylvania. West Virginia, Kentucky and Alabama. In each case history, a mine encountered roof falls or difficult ground conditions in the headgate, caused by horizontal stress concentrations. The problems are detailed and the control measures adopted are described. In most cases, nearby longwall panels without stress concentrations were trouble-free. The paper also discusses detailed measurements made at two adjacent Pennsylvania longwalls. One headgate was oriented to avoid a horizontal stress concentration, and the other was not. Eliminating the stress concentration dramatically reduced roof support loads and roof deformation. The paper concludes that proper panel orientation and sequence is the key to maintaining headgate ground control. The optimum orientation is not parallel with the maximum horizontal stress, as previously thought but rather 200 in the stress shadow of the gob. Other stress control techniques, including artificial support, are briefly discussed.

A shortage of technical skills in all areas of the mining industry is being experienced worldwide. This has significant consequences for design, operations, productivity and safety and, therefore, needs to be seriously addressed, both in the short and longer term. It is therefore both a strategic and a tactical issue. Importantly, however, since mining is a long-term business, the shortage of skills must be dealt with from a strategic point of view to ensure the supply of the necessary skills for future mining. This paper will deal specifically with the provision of high level technical skills, that is, university graduates in mining engineering, and the outlook for the institutions that are currently producing such graduates.

La evolución del método de minado se determinó por la búsqueda de mejores condiciones de seguridad y eficiencia en la operación. En ese sentido, los resultados logrados con cada una de las alternativas de minado por subniveles, indica que se ha logrado optimizar las diferentes variables mineras y cumplir con el plan estratégico de Empresa Minera Iscaycruz S.A. (EMISA). Para cumplir con el citado plan estratégico, se debe optimizar el método de minado de Chupa, a través de una mayor producción a un menor costo,así como del aprovecho de las labores de desarrollo y preparación ejecutadas según el planeamiento inicial del minado. Por ello, la secuencia del avance del minado y la reestructuración del sistema de relleno de la mina son los aspectos importantes para lograr este objetivo. "

The advent of the more efficient and effective rare-earth roll (RER) separator in the early 1980?s began a new era of dry magnetic separation. The RER units quickly became the separator of choice within the materials processing industry. Though RER separators are now commonplace throughout the world, only modest advancements have been made to the original design. This paper details recent, more significant, rare-earth magnetic separation developments. These developments maintain the best features of existing technology while minimizing shortcomings. The discussion includes discerning features that aid in better metallurgical performance. Also discussed are improved mechanical aspects that allow for both easier operation and maintenance. Performance details from various test programs are included.

Within the famous Harrods department store, a new lift shaft has been constructed, servicing a depth of 22m below ground level as well as the existing 6 storeys of the store. The shaft will connect with a new goods tunnel which is to be excavated beneath the shop, as well as new floor space above ground level which has resulted from the infilling of a previously existing lightwell within the store. The construction of the deep shaft while maintaining uninterrupted use of the store by the Client led to a number of innovative solutions being undertaken. Empirical assessments were made of settlements anticipated from the construction process, which took place within a congested environment of existing foundations. Various elements were designed and installed to mitigate the effects of the inevitable ground movement on the surrounding overlying structure, which supported sensitive high quality finishes and mechanical and electrical installations. The reinforced concrete lining of the shaft was contained within a cofferdam of minipiles. The minipile placement accuracy (1 in 150) was vital as it could not interfere with the subsequent tunnelling works. As the scheme progressed this became even more critical since the minipiles were needed as support for parts of the permanent works. This paper describes:- the high quality placement and control of the minipiled cofferdam, the methods employed in assessing ground movements and the techniques used to mitigate against the effects of these movements.

The contract initially involved specialty mechanical, electrical and instrumentation maintenance and has developed to encompass maintenance planning and plant control systems.The integrated partnership has delivered excellent results in the areas of improved availability, reliability and return on investment. The operation is now amongst the industry leaders in plant availability.The integrated maintenance service has delivered: An increase in plant availability from 93%, in the first year, to 96.5% today, generating approximately $50 million additional income per year, Quality work procedures, Process and equipment improvements, Major shutdown planning involving more than 700 personnel, 6000 parts and over 2 000 discrete activities.The ongoing success of the partnership requires a high level of understanding between both companies. A commitment to maintain a long term sustainable relationship, based on a ""win - win"" culture, is the key to this success.
