INTRODUCTION The Premise Not much time has to be spent in a tunneling project to realize the tremendous interdependence that exists among the various unit operations. The research that is to be described attempts to examine one set of these linked operations, namely, the effect of cutters on muck handling properties. All too often research focuses on too minute an aspect of a problem for the results to be of much immediate, practical use. The goal of this research is to avoid this specificity. Apologies are tendered if this goal is missed. It is known that the mode of flow of bulk solids under the influence of gravity -- emptying a bin or hopper -- is dependent on several basic parameters. The size of the particles and the distribution of sizes (consist) determine whether the solids will first flow out of a given aperture; the cohesion of the solids will determine if flow will continue after the bin is opened; and the angle of internal friction determines the size of the flow regime (1,2,3). It is well understood that the latter two parameters affect the behavior of bulk material on a conveyor belt. Cohesion of material to a belt is always an undesired problem. Heaping of material on a belt depends on the material's internal friction. It is also known that varying the particle size, and the packing density of the material can affect the material's angle of internal friction (4,5). The question was posed whether sufficient variation in a mechanical tunneling machine's (mole) cutting function could be arranged to affect materially the handling properties of the muck

South Africa had a late start with rapid prototyping (RP), with the first system being available in 1991. Up to 1994 only three systems were available in SA. Through active research participation from the CSIR and a number of universities, supported by technology transfer programmes and industry awareness workshops, adoption of RP technologies started to grow. Internationally, RP grew to the extent that several country-based member organizations were formed, and an initiation meeting of the Global Alliance of RP Associations (GARPA) took place during the SME Rapid Conference in Dearborn, USA in 1998. South Africa (SA) was invited under the auspices of the Time Compression Technologies Centre (TCTC) launched by the CSIR, and received an invitation to become a member of GARPA through the launch of a national, inclusive organization. The latter gave rise to a RAPDASA planning/launch meeting held at the University of Stellenbosch, which culminated in the first RAPDASA international conference held in November 2000 at the CSIR, and the election of a first RAPDASA management committee, also at the 1st AGM held during the conference. RAPDASA has been a pillar of strength since then, with an annual international conference being presented. As South Africa?s RP awareness grew through the RAPDASA and independent activities, so did the availability of RP platforms in SA.SA also became a benchmark for other countries/late adopters to follow, as slowly a position of following became a position of leading through innovative applications. The paper highlights SA?s development approach and history, together with the discussion of case studies in various fields. Contribution to the light metals industry will also be discussed. This paper describes a design-build project for the construction of a tanker wharf for 150,000 dwt vessels. The tankers deliver oil from offshore oil fields to a Transshipment terminal on the south coast of Newfoundland. The project described is an expansion to a previously constructed facility, adding an additional berth. The first berth was designed conventionally as concrete structures supported on groups of independent, single piles. The second berth was awarded to Peter Kiewit Sons' Co. Ltd. based on an alternate design which utilized a "jacket" concept whereby prefabricated steel frames are placed on the seabed and serve as permanent templates and also give lateral support to the piles, thereby increasing their load capacity. This led to economies and time savings. Discussed herein is the design process and the field installation, covering the jackets, driven pipe piles, and the rock anchors.

Following the blasting fatality on 17 December 2009, Landau Colliery was forced to change from the blasting practices that had been utilized since the start-up of the mine. Since then, attempts have been made to optimize blasting results. The challenge is rooted to the mining environment - during the early life of the mine, mining took place in virgin areas, whereas currently mining is taking place in areas overlying old underground bord and pillar workings. The underground bord and pillar workings aggravate phenomena such as spontaneous combustion, hot holes, and sinkholes. The 2009 fatality was attributed to hot holes causing premature detonation. Landau has been struggling with poor results from their overburden and coal blasts; leading to poor fragmentation of overburden and the PI parting that lies between the No.1 and No.2 coal seams. An extensive literature survey was completed in order to identify possible alternative solutions that could be evaluated for this unique mining environment, which demands a high degree of caution during mining to ensure factors such as dragline stability and personnel safety. The literature survey confirmed that the previous blasting technique, which was mainly characterized by air decking, was indeed the more efficient, although it was deemed unsafe because of the possibility of hot holes and the high sensitivity of detonators. Potential modifications to the blasting technique were modelled in a Microsoft Excel simulation that was available from the mine, and pit visits were conducted in order to determine whether implementation would be a problem. From the model it is evident that results can be improved by changing the current burden and spacing ratio. Visiting the pit revealed that the tie-in pattern and drilling inaccuracies are contributing to problem areas.

Dennis Millgard introduced the Session by hoping that participants to the Conference would also share their piling problems. He then invited the first speaker to present his paper. Paper 5.1. Pat Kelleher commenced by saying that he belonged to a one hundred year old firm that had experience in the New York Harbour area. They were often asked to assess the integrity of many waterside structures such as piers, walls, and docks which were deteriorating whilst still in use. The earliest structures, built in the 1800's, were on timber piles. These have now changed to Steel H and tube piles and concrete piles. Usually they were called in when the structure was showing signs of distress, or had reached the end of its life but could not be closed. In particular, they had found that marine borers had returned to New York Harbour because of the improved quality of the water. There is now a far greater incidence of attack on the timber piles than when the water was polluted. Repair is usually carried out by encapsulating the pile within the tidal range of about -2ft to +8ft (-0.6 to +2.4m). Reinforced concrete forms, reinforced fibre jackets, or nylon bags are used. Reinforced fibre jackets are used with a protective coat on the pile, while nylon bags prove the cheapest method.

A common problem recently encountered with the increase in the rate of input feed at Enrichment Plant 2 of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex is the loss of value to the tails, translating to lower recoveries. The feasibility of the direct transfer of part of the high-grade concentrate from rougher stages to an appropriate position along the circuit was studied, and two positions were proposed for direct transfer of the concentrate. One position was the feed flow into cleaner cells, and the other was the feed flow into the recleaner cell. The results indicated that transferring the concentrate from the first unit of the rougher stage to the feed flow into the cleaner cells was feasible, with no limitations, while the second position required the installation of a set of hydrocyclones. It was found that the transfer of concentrate to the proposed positions not only addressed the problem of limited cell capacity, resulting in debottlenecking of the circuit, but also improved metallurgical separation efficiency up to 1.4%.

During the late 1990s Anglo American PLC was evaluating the Gamsberg zinc deposit in the Northern Cape Province. As the primary South African metallurgical technology provider, Mintek became involved in the evaluation of a pyrometallurgical process for the recovery of zinc from the Gamsberg deposit. eloping DC arc furnace technology for the metallurgical industry. This includes the patented Enviroplas® process for the treatment of zinc bearing waste materials. As a consequence Mintek has developed extensive expertise in the pyrometallurgical processing of zinc bearing materials. However, Mintek?s technologies stopped with the production of Prime Western Grade (PWG) zinc. Early on in the evaluation of the Gamsberg project, it became evident that the refining of PWG zinc would play an important part in the economic viability of the project. At the time the only pyrometallurgical technology available for the refining of PWG zinc to Special High Grade (SHG) zinc was the New Jersey process. This process represents 50-year-old technology and has not undergone significant refinement since the technology was developed. In order to provide a complete pyrometallurgical flow sheet for possible implementation at Gamsberg, Mintek assessed the New Jersey process with a view to either improving the technology or developing a new technology appropriate to the 21 century. In 1998 Mintek convened a consortium consisting of Mintek, the University of Cape Town, Eskom Enterprises, Bateman Metals and Anglo American PLC. The consortium successfully applied to the Innovation Fund for funding to develop a new process for the pyrometallurgical refining of PWG zinc to SHG zinc. The main aims of the project were to develop a new technology for pyrometallurgical zinc refining that conformed to the following: ?Decrease the production cost of SHG zinc metal to stimulate the development of the Gamsberg deposit. ?Be compatible with the current Enviroplas® process, preferably as an add-on to that process. ?Should use electrical energy to benefit from local price tariffs. The project commenced at the beginning of 2000 and consisted of three phases: ?an initial technology search and assessment of the fundamental aspects of zinc distillation. ?the design of a pilot plant for zinc refining. ?the manufacture, commissioning and operation of the pilot plant. A new technology based on a DC arc boiler feeding a packed distillation column was developed and during 2003 the project culminated in the successful operation of a 200 kg/h pilot plant. Ultimately, all of the aims of the project were met and the main outcome is that an advanced process for the pyrometallurgical refining of zinc (the Zincref process) has been developed. The main innovation of the technology was the switch from an energy transfer limited process to a mass transfer limited process (for which a patent has been registered).

Where the equipment, technique and materials are available for the construction of large diameter rock socketted piles, this is frequently the most economical and environmentally acceptable method of supporting very large concentrated foundation loads in geoglogically appropriate areas. This paper outlines the current approaches in Australia to design and installation of large diameter rock socketted piles. The equipment and procedures described generally reflect those developed or used by Vibro-Pile (Aust.), a company which, while installing the usual range of driven and bored piles, specializes in the design and construction of large diameter rock socketted piles and possesses special expertise in drilling in high strength rock. A high capacity crane attached drill for large diameter drilling in rock is briefly described. Discussed in detail are the construction techniques employed and structural and geomechanical design methods adopted.

NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory is currently involved in research to identify silica dust generation in underground metal/nonmetal mines. The ultimate goal of this research is to develop control technologies to reduce worker exposure to respirable silica dust. Commodities and job classifications with the highest silica dust exposure have been identified through analysis of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) compliance dust sampling database. Dust surveys were conducted in an underground limestone and gold mine to investigate silica dust sources, generation levels, and controls being used. A summary of the mining operations, sampling procedures, resulting data, and suggested methods to improve the dust control will be provided.

Push backs used in the production planning of open pit mines play an integral role in generating annual cash flow. Although several algorithms for push back designs have been proposed, none have studied the optimum number of push backs. In this paper, different algorithms have been implemented for the push back design of a cross section of a copper deposit and the results discussed. Moreover, the optimum number of push backs has been determined using analytical and multiple attribute decision making (MADM) methods based on minimizing the risk associated with grade uncertainty, and minimizing stripping ratio, while maximizing net present value (NPV). According to the findings, the optimum number of push backs has been proposed to be between three and six, as lower quantities of push backs are more likely to achieve the calculated net present value, and have smoother stripping ratios for different pushbacks. This approach was examined in an operating mine and the optimum number of push backs determined to be four.

A chlorination pilot plant having capacity to produce 5?10 kg/hr of titanium tetrachloride is in operation at the chlorination facility in Mintek. The bubbling fluid bed chlorination plant can be operated in batch and/or continuous process to study the chlorination kinetics of various feedstocks. The chlorination of titaniferrous ores to produce titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) was carried out during the commissioning of the pilot plant and also as part of the titanium programme carried out at Mintek. TiCl4 is a basic raw material for producing commercial titanium dioxide pigment and titanium metal. This paper discusses the challenges faced during the commissioning and operation of the chlorination pilot plant. It also discusses the effect on the auxiliary facilities and instrumentation as a result of the harsh operating conditions of +1000°C and use of corrosive gases like chlorine and titanium tetrachloride. It discusses the effect of physico-chemical properties of the titanium tetrachloride and iron chlorides. The effect on the chlorinator refractory lining due to heating and cooling of the chlorinator is also discussed. Besides the special provisions made during the design of the chlorinator, this paper also discusses the operational experience and possible solutions to be implemented in future. Most efforts to mechanize low seam (narrow reef) mining of platinum ore are presently based on board-and-pillar methods with1.6?1.8 m in reef excavation. This paper attempts to substantiate the benefits of low profile mining: primarily improved head grade with resulting reduced tailings losses. Board-and-pillar equipment supplied by DBT, facilitating1.1?1.2m mining height has been in operation in an Anglo Platinum mine since September 2001. Major aspects of the equipment, battery scoops (LHDs) and rotary bolting rigs, are described and presently achieved results reported. The medium term industry goal is rock breaking without the use of explosives. An outline of present DBT developments is presented.

A new lead refinery with a capacity of 230,000 tons per year commenced operation at Port Pirie in October, 1959. This plant superseded the refinery which had operated from 1933 with the advent of the continuous lead refining process. The incorporation of new equipment following local metallurgical developments, together with the overseas demand for lead of extremely low antimony content createddifficulties in operating the original plant. The new refinery project was undertaken to cover this disability and to gain the full advantage of the new processes.Desilverising and softening are carried out in units identical in size to those used previously. Metallic zinc is recovered from the entire output of desilverised bullion by vacuum distillation. Final refining is carried out by batch treatment with caustic soda yielding lead of purity previously unattainable at Port Pirie.These two processes replace continuous dezincing by oxidation, a high temperature process which caused large quantities of lead and antimony to be recirculated. The final stage is a batch process; therefore the product composition can be checked before casting. Individual batches can be adjusted to produce special alloys to consumer's specification.Improved casting equipment allows the quantity production of pigs of good physical characteristics either as 56 lb bars or 2000 lb pigs.This, together with the high purity of the lead, assures the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (RH.A.S.) position in world markets.Automatic control systems are extensively employed, particularly on the vacuum dezincing unit.The anticipated financial benefits have been achieved mainly by a reduction in the tonnage of recirculated materials, a smaller labour force, and reduced maintenance requirements.INTRODUCTIONIn December 1956 a decision was made to build at Port Pirie a lead refinery on a completely new site, and in October 1959 the new refinery was brought into operation. THE PROCESSING OF A TANTALITE ORE(a) The OreThe minerals in which tantalum and columbium most commonly occur are tantalite and columbite. These two minerals are the end members of an isomorphous series of tantalates and columbates of iron and manganese, but in nature the series grade into each other.Some of the best deposits of tantalum and columbium ores in the world occur in the north-west of Australia. Until recently tantalite low in columbium was the only mine~al in demand but discoveries of extended uses for columbium, e.g., addition of ferro-columbium to high chromium I steels inhibits intergranular corrosion (weld decay), have created a demand for columbite low in tantalum as weB. Both of these types of' ore occur in the Pilbara district in Western Australia and most of the ore mined is exported to America after a preliminary grinding and concentration by gravity.A sample from the Bynoe Harbour locality, west of Darwin, was used in this investigation. "Pneumatic flotation was introduced to the Chilean Copper Mining Industry in 1993 by Ingeniería de Minerales S.A. (IDM). The technology is based on the designs of Dr. Rainer Imhof from Germany, who is the designer of several different types of pneumatic flotation cells, already sold through his Company Maelgwyn Mineral Service Limited (MMH). The company is represented by Ingenieria de Minerales S.A. (IDM) in South America.Pneumatic flotation, has been used in tough industrial applications .It has been successfully used for metallic ores such as copper sulphide and oxide minerals, copper slag, silica and silicates from iron magnetic preconcentrate (reverse flotation) and gold. It has also provided promising results when applied to molybdenum flotation. The latest applications, with ultrafine molybdenum particles in operating plants, is showing the V and G Cell (end model designed) as a real technological alternative to conventional flotation., The G Cell is an extremely high speed flotation machine with high selectivity which introduces the possibility of producing a final molybdenum concentrate with only one stage of cleaning. This is a completely new development in molybdenum flotation in the industrial circuit which has the potential to dramatically reduce the circulating load in the cleaning circuit. As a consequence the capital costs of future Molybdenum plants may also be reduced. The suitability of the G Cell will have to be determined on a case by case basis but it provides the metallurgist with an alternate flowsheet for consideration.The good performance of the G Cell can be explained by the high gas hold-up and very effective micro-turbulence which helps improve the attachment of solid particles to the bubbles. This technology may change our traditional concept of residence time in flotation. Additionally, the rotation phenomena introduced in the vessel of the G Cell ,creates radial separation forces which are critical to achieving a more rapid separation of the target minerals from the tailing. This results in a much reduced residence time requirement in the flotation machine. Some benefits associated with the use of the new G Cell are: less energy consumption, less maintenance costs, simple and reliable circuit to operate and a small area required for installing the circuits.As a result of the industrial experience in the Chile, the pneumatic flotation type G Cell can be regarded as a technology which must be considered as a replacement technology for the rougher and cleaner stages for fine particle flotation."

Umicore acquired the Pirdop Smelter in a privatization offering by the Bulgarian government in September 1997. Since that time, an investment program has been conducted to increase capacity to 225 000 tons per year of anode copper, while improving the environmental performance to meet Bulgarian and European standards. A significant part of this investment program involved reconstruction of the three Peirce-Smith converters and the associated gas handling system. During the period June, 2000 through April, 2002, converter capacity was increased, the existing water-cooled hoods were replaced, the waste heat boiler was replaced by two evaporative coolers, the dry ESP's were rebuilt and extended, and a Converter Control System (CCS) installed. From 2002 until the present, a continuous improvement of operating and environmental performance has been achieved. This paper will describe the converter reconstruction project, the operational, maintenance, and environmental improvements achieved since then and additional projects presently under consideration.

Terramin Australia LimitedÆs Angas Lead and Zinc Mine operates in the unique and picturesque environment of Adelaide Hills, 60 km South East of the Adelaide city centre itself. The mine was granted approval for construction by the South Australian Government in April 2007 and the Process Plant was constructed and commissioned in July 2008. This paper outlines the background to the plant design and the approval process given the close proximity to the local town of Strathalbyn, with a major focus on the commissioning learnings from the Concentrator startup for future reference and a review of the operational performance of the Concentrator throughout the first year of successful production versus design and expectations.

Discussion held at the sessions of the Canal Zone meeting, November, 1910. [SECRETARY'S NOTE.-As a result of this discussion, an expression of opinion covering all points of unanimous agreement was adopted and signed by members of the Institute party as individuals. This statement, which was printed in the Bulletin of December, 1910, is reprinted below, as an introduction to ,the detailed report of the discussion. It should be clearly understood that it does not constitute an official declaration by the Institute, the rules of which forbid any such action. At the New Haven meeting of February, 1909, a free discussion of the plan of the canal took place, in which the critics of the present scheme had full opportunity to state their views. That discussion was continued at considerable length in the newspapers ; but the Institute was never committed to either side. In this latter instance, the situation is precisely similar. Certain members and guests of the Institute, having had the advantage of later developments and of personal inspection, have expressed the conclusions at which they have arrived on their own responsibility ; and these conclusions are published by the Institute, subject to further discussion, like any other part of its proceedings. The general statement referred to contained a promise that the full discussion, of which it was a result, would be subsequently printed ; and this promise is fulfilled, so far as practicable, in the subjoined report, concerning which I beg to offer the following explanations: 1. It is made up of the remarks of the members of our party, as subsequently written out and mailed to the Secretary. 2. The public is asking for more aesthetic designs if they can be proven cost-effective at providing an appealing element to new dams. Lake Lenexa was designed and built around the idea of providing for basic dam functions such as flood control, enhanced water quality, recreation but also to provide an inviting community focal point for the residents to visit and enjoy; truly interact with the dam. The architecturally unique dam and ?one of a kind? spillway were designed to symbolize the water cycle as water moves from nature into the urban environment and the back to nature. A pedestrian bridge that spans the spillway offers visitors a good view of cascading pools and a fountain. The original Lake Lenexa dam layout incorporated relatively high, cast-in-place concrete retaining walls to form the spillway structure. The Black & Veatch project team performed a Value Engineering (VE) study to determine cost-effective means for implementing architectural features within the spillway, which resulted in innovative uses of construction materials not typically used in dam and reservoir construction. The VE study concluded that mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls that are normally used for transportation projects would be a cost-effective alternative to the originally planned cast-in-place wall systems for the main spillway and stilling basins. The Black & Veatch study added value by mixing cement-kiln dust (CKD) with on-site clay soils to produce a stabilized material for use under the spillway. The CKD stabilized material properties include low compressibility, high strength and low permeability, which reduced seepage and uplift pressures under the spillway slabs. The cost savings provided by the VE alternatives reduced total costs and enabled architectural elements. The award winning dam design also used drilled caissons, expanded polystyrene (EPS) block forms, customized steel forms and external concrete vibrators to build the pedestrian bridge and upper spillway structures.
