"This paper presents results from the proposed cyanide detoxification circuit for Seabridge Gold’s KSM project. The proposed flowsheet uses a two-stage CCD (counter-current washing/decantation) circuit to transfer the flotation products CIL(carbon-in-leach) barren solution to a SART process (Sulphidization, Acidification, Recycling of precipitate, and Thickening of precipitate) to recover copper and free cyanide from the copper cyanide complex. The SART barren solution is then treated by an AVR process (Acidification, Volatilization of HCN gas, and Reneutralization) to concentrate the cyanide that was liberated in SART for recycling to leach. The washed CIL barren pulp (the CCD underflow) is treated with the SO2 /Air process to oxidize residual cyanide.The goal of this complex flowsheet is to recover and recycle as much cyanide as possible and produce a final effluent containing less than 0.5 mg/L copper and CNWAD at the lowest cost. The SO2/air process is capable of achieving low residual CNWAD (<1 mg/L) in the final product, but the persistence of aqueous copper above the target level has been detected in the treated solution in some instances. The expected high concentrations of copper and cyanide in the KSM CIL barren ( >200 mg/L each species) and the difficulties this might create for the SO2 /air process was a key factor in the decision to consider including the washing, SART and AVR steps in the project flowsheet.The target concentrations of CNWAD and Cu were readily achieved after aging the SO2 /air treated pulp, as would occur in a tailing or polishing pond. This suggests no additional treatment will be required to sustain low levels of these species in the final plant effluent."

In iron ore sintering, packing the granules onto the sintering strand to form a porous bed with optimum permeability is a complex dynamic process. The packed bed voidage is the key factor determining the flame front speed and the final sinter productivity and quality. Previous studies have found that granules are soft quasi-particles with a typical structure of nuclei with an adhering fines layer. The deformation of the adhering layer greatly affects the bed voidage during packing, which is related to the strength of the adhering layer and the force exerted on the granules. In this study, tablets simulating the particle size distribution in the adhering layer of granules were made for four single ore blends. Both the tensile strength and shear strength properties of these tablets were investigated as a function of water content by the uniaxial compression test and direct shear test respectively. The results of compression tests show that the adhering layer becomes weaker and more compliant with the increase of moisture. The most porous ore has a more rigid adhering layer than the other three tested iron ores at any given moisture content. In direct shear tests, the internal friction angle of the adhering layer ranged from 31&#176; to 37&#176; and varied little with the moisture content or ore type. The cohesion constant is around 1 kPa and is quite small compared to the stress applied to the granules during packing. Combined with the results of granulation and packing experiments, the influence of the adhering fines layer deformation on the degree of voidage loss is specifically discussed.CITATION:Zhou, M, Zhou, H and Honeyands, T, 2017. A general discussion of the structure of the junk automobile recycling system shows that the generation of stripped automobile hulks and scrapped automobiles is price inelastic. As a result, it is extremely difficult for the price mechanism to automatically achieve an equilibrium that will prevent the accumulation of excessive automobile wrecker inventories and vehicle abandonment by the last owners of scrapped cars. The new shredder processing technology and the new portable flattener technology have altered the structure of the junk automobile recycling system. The shredder technology has increased the demand for processed automobile scrap. This increased demand is reflected in higher prices paid for hulks by scrap processors. The portable flattener has reduced the transportation cost of shipping hulks to processors. The two new technologies have eliminated, at least potentially, the net cost of shipping stripped hulks so frequently incurred by wreckers in the past. The elimination of this cost eliminates the economic incentive for excessive wrecker inventories. Unfortunately, the incentive for last owners to abandon their cars does not appear to have been eliminated by the new technologies. The last owner of an automobile with no spare parts value is still likely to incur a cost by delivering his automobile to the recycling system. Although a subsidy payment is probably unnecessary to reduce excessive wrecker inventories, such a payment might be one solution to the problem of automobile abandonment. However, there are a wide variety of subsidy programs that could be introduced. Before any Federal subsidy program is introduced to reduce automobile abandonment, it is recommended that the program be tested on a limited basis in many different parts of the country.

The soils included 65 m of rock not exceeding an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 200 kgf/cm2, 130 meters of soft clay, silt, and sand not exceeding 30standard penetration test SPT blows per 300 mm, and 220 m of rock ranging between an UCS of 400-600 kgf/cm2. The river crossing, utilizing 1778 mm OD x 19 mm wall x600 mm steel casing pipe without intermediate jacking stations, was part of a seven kilometer liquefied natural gas (LNG) transmission line in South Korea. This 440-m, 1,442-ft, river crossing was microtunneled through three different ground conditions and completed in just over three months. The crossing was achieved with an average of 25 m of ground cover and 15 m of water cover. The Kwang Yang River Crossing was part of a 7 km liquefied natural gas pipeline project for POSCO, a Korean steel producer. The microtunneling machine was custom built for this project. The microtunneling machine selected for this project was tooled with 7 button bits and 2 roller bits. None of the cutter bits were replaced during the drive. Inside the machine, before the spoils laden slurry was pump back to the surface, it would pass through an independent cone crusher. The crusher is placed in the slurry flow to make sure that none of the spoils are so large as to stop the return flow of the slurry. An additional requirement was for the inclusion of a compressed air lock. The air lock was required in the event that the cutter tools required replacement. The cutters were back loaded so that the workers would have access to change the cutters in the event of cutter failure or wear out. No intermediate jacking stations were installed for the drive. The soils included 65 meters of rock not exceeding an unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 200 kgf/cm2 with production averaging between 7 and 20 mm/minute. The second zone contained 130 meters of soft clay, silt, and sand not exceeding 30 standard penetration test (SPT) blows per 300 mm with production averaging between 80 and 180 mm/minute. The third zone contained 220 m of rock ranging between an UCS of 400-600 kgf/cm2 with production averaging between 7 and20 mm/minute. The steel casing pipe was 1778 mm OD x 19 mm wall x 6000 mm long. The project profile, see Figure 1, shows the soil conditions. The hand written numbers locate just above the pipeline are the production dates. The circled numbers are the 10 pipe joint increments. Frontier/Traylor is presently completing construction of twin tunnels for the Tri-County Metropolitan Transit District of Oregon’s (Tri-Met) westside lightrail system. The tunnels are each 4,550 m (14,935 ft) in length and 6.48 m (21.29 ft) in diameter. The 1/3 of each tunnel was driven from the west portal using drill and blast methods and the remaining 2/3 was driven from the east portal using a TBM. The paper describes: The difficulties encountered by the TBM mining the weathered Columbia River Basalts. The execution of drill and blast work despite challenging ground conditions, stringent noise and vibrations specifications, and public relations problems. The excavation and lining of the Washington Park Station 79 m (260 ft) below the park zoo.

The Loma Prieta earthquake occurred on October 17, 1989 at 5:04 PM, Pacific Daylight Time. It measured 7.1 in magnitude and was felt from Los Angeles north to the Oregon state line and east to western Nevada. The epicenter of the earthquake was located along the San Andreas Fault, in the Southern Santa Cruz Mountains just north of the City of Watsonville, California. It was the largest earthquake to occur in the San Francisco Bay area since the 1906 earthquake. A total of 87 aftershocks of Magnitude 3.0 or larger were recorded within 21 days after the seismic event. As a result of this earthquake thirteen State-owned and five locally-owned bridges were closed to traffic. Three of the most publicized State-owned structures closed to traffic were Struve Slough Bridge, San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and Cypress Street Viaduct. Struve Slough Bridge was twin slab bridges that collapsed and were rebuilt and open to traffic three months after the earthquake. San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge experienced collapse of upper and lower spans at Pier 9 and was reopened to traffic one month after the earthquake. The Cypress Street Viaduct experienced collapse of 48 bents that resulted in the upper roadway falling onto the lower roadway.

"A method of sampling and presenting bubbles for imaging for use in full-size flotation cells is described. The device (bubble viewer) comprises a tube attached to a sealed glass viewing chamber. The assembly is first filled with frother-containing water (to prevent coalescence) and the tube immersed at the desired location below the froth. For a few minutes bubbles are collected in the viewer free from slurry and are readily imaged. To reduce bubble overlap and the problem of defining the plane of view, the viewing chamber has a sloped side. Bubbles rise, encounter this slope, spread into a single plane and slide up. This simple expedient virtually eliminates overlap and provides an unambiguous focus plane - the underside of the sloped glass. The bubble image is captured and processed to give size data. The bubble viewer has been employed at several concentrators on different types of flotation cells. Examples of the images are given. The impact of position in the cell and the effect of changing gas rate on bubble size are illustrated. This technique provides a sensitive measure of the effects of process variables on bubble size.INTRODUCTIONDespite the extensive use of flotation in the mineral processing industry, the methodology employed for cell design is largely based on empirical rules rather than on first principles. One of the main reasons for this state of affairs is that the local flow structures encountered in industrial-scale machines are very complex. These flow structures are difficult to simulate under the controlled conditions of the laboratory and the difficulty to solve the mathematical models that treat the randomness of such flows also mean theoretical treatment is limited. Understanding flotation cell hydrodynamics requires reliable data, which involves the implementation of measurement techniques capable of performing both at the laboratory- and the industrial-scale, In addition, it is desirable that such techniques are amenable to automation to reduce extensive manual intervention in the data collection process."

THE choice of a pumping plant for the drainage of a mine is a matter of such importance that it is obvious that in a short paper it is impossible to go fully into the reasons governing the adoption of any particular type. The author, therefore, proposes to briefly discuss the methods.in vogue, and, as far as possible, to point out the advantages and disadvantages of the numerous systems. The probiem is of extreme importance to the mining engineer, and it appears that in the past sufficient thought has not been given to this branch, as shown by the numerous failures which are encountered.When water is met with in large quantities, the development of the mine depends upon the pumping plant to such a great extent that the most careful consideration should be given before deciding on any particular scheme for drainage. The pumpingplant in a mine should be looked. upon in the light of an insurance policy, and should be treated as such, care being taken that the premium is as low as possibl~, and to ensure this it is necessary that the most efficient plant be secured. Local conditions play such an important part ill the design of a plant that no hard and fast rules can be laid down. The past decade has seen revolutionary advances in communications and information-handling techniques which have been stimulated by &quot;cold war&quot; military requirements and by current programmes for probing into outer space. The tools used in exploration for petroleum and minerals have been improved significantly as a result of this new space age technology and even greater improvements are on the way.Two areas of technical activity have been particularly fruitful in enhancing the effectiveness of exploration methods. These are1. the development of new approaches, based on information theory,for extracting signal from noise more efficiently than before, and2. the use of high-speed digital computers for storing and processing all kinds of exploration information, not only geophysical but geological as well.In seismic prospecting, use of information theory has led to new techniques such as time-domain filtering, wave-number filtering and correlation methods which have made it possible to obtain usable reflection data from areas which were previously considered non reflective. Complex playback and other data processing facilities have been developed to apply these approaches.Digitization of geophysical data for handling by high-speed electronic computers facilitates many of these techniques for signal-to-noise improvement. Direct digital recording of seismic data in the field is now being d&apos;one on an experimental basis in the United States, and this should become a standard procedure, at least for problem areas.The increased dynamic range, flexibility of filtering and other data processing, and convenience of information storage and retrieval make digital recording attractive in spite of its high cost compared to conventional analogue methods. Digital computers are being programmed to carry out many operations in data reduction and interpretation with substantial savings in time and cost over conventional procedures.INTROPUCTIONIn the years that have passed since the end of the Second World War, the western world has witnessed a technological revolution which may be as far reaching in its ultimate impqct as the Industrial Revolution of the last century.

Various seam conditions had been examined during longwall production at RAG German hard coal mines. Based on the field data a prediction method was developed considering separation planes as influencing factors for roof falls at the face. The characteristics, orientation, and density of separation are important factors on the occurrence of roof falls. In addition to geological influences, the performance parameters and geometry of support must be considered and optimized for the prediction and prevention of roof falls in a longwall face. Based on detailed macro- and microscopic investigations of e coal seams considering various ranks of carbonization, the origin and characteristics of separation planes are determined and a strata-specific influence on roof fall is interpreted. It was assessed that the coal face fracturing and displacement caused by the stress depend on the floor and roof strata conditions due to activation of the existing separation planes. Field studies are shown giving an idea of influences by advance rates of the longwall face, support delay and hydraulic pressure to the roof control in longwall faces in depth of more than 3000 ft. The analysis includes the application of specific software developed for longwall roof fall prediction as a result of a European research project. The software allows a laminar graphic display of roof fall probability, which is used for recognition of risk areas and risk management.

On October 1, 1993 the regulations for assessing and cleaning up contaminated soil and groundwater in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts were revised. These new regulations, known as the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) 310 CMR 40.0000, were developed to keep routine releases out of the regulatory system and rely on private parties to handle most releases without Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) oversight. An integral part of the new MCP is the Licensed Site Professional (LSP). An LSP is required to handle activities and render opinions once a site enters the MCP. These regulations must be adhered to where ever a release has occurred, including construction sites. A brief overview of the new MCP is given below; see attached MCP Flowchart for graphical summary. Entering the MCP Process A release of oil or hazardous material (OHM) to the soil or groundwater above applicable reportable quantities (RQ&apos;s) or reportable concentrations (RC&apos;s) will require notification to the DEP and compliance with applicable provisions of the MCP. RQ&apos;s and RC&apos;s are listed in the MCP (310 CMR 40.1600) for most compounds that are typically encountered. For each compound there are two RC&apos;s for soil (S-1 and S-2) and two for groundwater (GW-1 and GW-2). The S-1 and GW-1 RC&apos;s apply to sites that are environmentally more sensitive, as a result they are lower than the S-2 and GW-2 RC&apos;s.

Particle beneficiation tests are often conducted to determine how the recovery of a key component of a particle mixture varies with overall product yield, i.e., the separation curve. The results can be misleading when an attempt is made to determine the effect of feed grade by comparing separation curves representing different feed grades or key component concentrations. This is a shortcoming of the conventional recovery versus yield diagram, which may not appear to be affected by feed concentration. To overcome this shortcoming, a method is presented for transforming and normalizing the recovery and yield coordinates so that the separation curves representing dif-ferent feed concentrations are directly comparable.

Detection and assessment of severe geological anomalies ahead of a longwall face greatly benefits the mining operation. Electromagnetic-based Radio Imaging Method (RIM) is one of the most promising geophysical methods for this task. Based on two decades of development, the latest RIM instrumentation (RIM-IV) has expanded its operational range up to 1,800ft.A site demonstration of the RIM-IV technology was recently conducted within a longwall panel. An extensive ground truth study was performed to evaluate the accuracy of the RIM survey results. This study compared the generated RIM tomograms of attenuation rate with the mapped geological anomalies. Three different approaches have been employed to examine the accuracy of the RIM results and to correlate the measured signal attenuation rates with physical properties of the coal seam. The study shows that the RIM-IV technology is able to identify and delineate those geological features that would severely affect the longwall mining operation.

The Mini-DiscTM cutter drill bit is a radical design departure from the traditional tri-cone rockdrill bit. Miniature disc type cutting tools as small as 3.25 inches (82.5 mm) diameter are fitted to a bit body to cut individual concentric kerfs. The action is the same as that commonly used on large tunnel boring machines but miniaturized. The high performance rate and efficiency of a disc cutter are the result of producing a large proportion rock chips rather than sand or powder. The Mini-DiscTM drill bit, referred to as the “Disc Bit” has other unique features as well. It can be re-greased between runs. It can be rebuilt in the field in about 15 minutes, cutters can be replaced and the Disc-Bit appears to require less down hole hydraulic power than conventional bits. Thoroughly tested in the laboratory, the bit has recently been undergoing field trials in well drilling, blast hole drilling and shaft drilling. As any engineer knows, the laboratory can not shake out all the problems but it eliminates the more glaring weaknesses. Performance results have been exhilarating, and a few mechanical problems were discovered and largely overcome. This paper is a progress report.

Concentrations of bright green material in the &quot;Golden Mile&quot; of Kalgoorlie, which carry particularly high gold values, are known locally as &quot;green leader&quot;.This assemblage consists largely of quartz, sericitic muscovite, carbonates, and pyrite. Some of the sericitic muscovite contains vanadium, giving the rock its green colour. Vanadium oxides, including nolanite, are also present. Tellurides identified in this study are calaverite, altaite, petzite, melonite, and coloradoite. Native gold was found in most of the samples; some of the gold, at least, has been formed from the decomposition of gold tellurides.It is suggested that mineralizing solutions carrying gold and tellurium leached vanadium from the host rocks and subsequently deposited gold tellurides and vanadium-bearing minerals in the &quot;green leader&quot;.

In previous work the influence of the casting speed on the flow field and the shape of the solidification front in an industrial 0.82 x 0.25 x 0.8 m³ bronze caster had been investigated. Both numerical and experimental model represented 1:1 the real caster geometry. A comparison of the results of both numerical and experimental models for the flow during the casting process showed a good agreement in the qualitative velocity fields (flow direction and vortex formation). This work represents a parameter study of the numerical model with variations of the turbulence conditions at the inlet in order to clarify their influence on the flow field in the caster. In order to find the best boundary condition at the inlet, the numerical calculations for water have been compared with the measured flow fields in the water model. The new boundary conditions were then applied to the numerical model of the bronze casting process.

Northern Iron Ltd (NIL) is an Australian listed company that recently brought the historic Sydvaranger open pit Magnetite Mine (the Project) in Northern Norway successfully back into production. NIL made the decision to operate the Project on an owner mining basis, due to limited large scale mining expertise amongst Norwegian mining contractors, a long mine life, a limited range in planned mining rate and to minimise costs. As a new mine operator in a country where labour practices are strictly regulated, there was the desire to reduce the risk associated employing and managing skilled personnel. This was achieved by coupling the purchase of the required mining equipment from the original equipment manufacturer&apos;s (OEM) regional dealers with OEM supported Maintenance and Repair Contracts (MARC). This paper examines the process that was followed to implement an owner mining operation in a short time frame; approximately 12 months from the initial requests for quotation to actual delivery of mining equipment to site, and some of the challenges faced. By following a formal and well-tested process, not only was the implementation achieved in the set time frame, but significant value was added through the cost savings achieved in the equipment purchase price and MARC rates that were negotiated through this process.

Combustion processes, comminution and materials handling can generate airborne particulates. Regulation of these particulates by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) is becoming progressively more stringent, and regulations will soon include ?nanoparticulates,? which are particles finer than 100 nanometers (0.1 mm). Nanoparticulates are believed to have significant negative health effects due to their high surface area and reactivity. Although it was argued that nanoparticulate concerns were only important for combustion, studies at Michigan Technological University have shown that materials handling and comminution release significant quantities of nanoparticles into the air. Laboratory studies have shown that the use of sodium metasilicate reduced airborne particles finer than 10 mm (PM10) by 86% and particles finer than 2.5 mm (PM2.5) by 80% for iron ore. Additional studies were conducted that revealed that nanoparticulate emissions were present in the types of operations conducted at pyrometallurgical facilities.

This paper describes the sheet pile design for the Line C extension from Ládví station to the North of Prague. The first part of the paper describes the geological conditions and structural configuration of the project. Typical cross sections, the description of the construction stages, and monitoring are discussed. The second part of the paper focuses on the sheeting design method. It describes the method of dependent pressures, that is, how the pressures acting upon a structure depend on the deformation. The design process and verification methodology are described in detail with comparison of the results with in-situ monitoring.

In this paper, the authors present a review of data gathering programs and stress analyses for improving mine layout designs at BRL mines located near Paonia, Colorado. BRL and other companies have used both longwall and continuous miner methods for the extraction of the Upper D, Upper B, Lower B and C seams from the multiple-seam reserves in the North Fork Valley. Historic mining in the B and C seams has created stress footprints in the neighboring unmined seams compounded by stress transfer from recent longwall extraction in the Upper D Seam. Thus optimum positioning of workings in the remaining reserves requires careful collection of pertinent data and consideration of load transfer from previous workings through remnant abutment pillars. Based on long-term subsidence monitoring, underground mapping and stress analyses, we have confirmed initial load transfer analyses finding mild interactions between the UD and LB workings, and the mining conditions have proven to be good and manageable during the development stage of the LB Seam. This has been achieved through prudent mine planning, prudent positioning of the gateroads in multiple seam workings and support allocations.
