"INTRODUCTIONTwin bored tunnels are commonly used for a variety of road and tunnel projects throughout the world. A major component of these twin tunnel projects is the construction of connecting cross passages that provide emergency access between tunnels and space for tunnel service equipment. Cross passages can present significant geotechnical risk and technical challenges to a project – support systems must be considered for redistributing loads around the mainline tunnel openings and supporting new loading resulting from excavation activities. Additionally, cross passages pose risks to construction schedule and cost because of their sequencing at the end of construction, so mitigation of schedule overruns can be critical. By observing field instrumentation data records from completed projects, a betterunderstanding of the force development in each temporary structure can be achieved with indication of which structures are the most critical to support ground loads.This paper discusses the data obtained during the Brisbane Airport Link construction project, a road tunnel located in Brisbane, Australia. Strain gauge instrumentation data from the precast segmental lining and propped opening steel sets is presented with relation to the construction sequence and local geology. Interpretations and conclusions based on the observed trends are proposed, with several key mechanisms affecting the loading and unloading identified.Brisbane Airport Link Project OverviewThe Brisbane Airport Link project in Brisbane, Australia, connects central Brisbane to the airport located northeast of the downtown with over 7km of twin-bore road tunnels, two lanes each, with several caverns, interchanges, and access ramps constructed along the alignment to connect to other key routes in the city. The project was executed under a Public-Private Partnership (P3) scheme, funded and operated by the consortium BrisConnections. The main contractors were a joint venture of John Holland and Theiss, while the design was carried out by Arup and Parsons Brinckerhoff.Construction of the tunnels was conducted using a combination of 17 roadheaders and two 12.5m double-shield Herrenknecht TBMs [1]. The TBMs were used in EPB-type closed mode for the initial portion of their drive, starting at the northeast end of the alignment. Tunneling started in soft ground, weathered rock, and mixed face conditions initially, progressing to competent sedimentary rocks as the drive continued. Support was accomplished using a 12.1 m diameter steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) segmental lining installed behind the TBMs in a 9 segments + 1 key arrangement. The innovative design of these segments is detailed in the paper by Harding and Francis [2]. Ancillary roads and underground interchange caverns were constructed by sequential excavation techniques using roadheaders, accounting for nearly half of the total underground excavations."

A major process control system is in some ways like a complex organism. The extremities, (that is, field instruments) are exposed to many hazards and suffer malfunctions of relatively minor and repetitive nature. Here I equate a stuck valve or dead transmitter with a skin abrasion or cut. The maintenance and repair of the extremities can be done by technicians with basic but thorough knowledge of relatively few problems and their solutions. Here I equate with administering Band-Aids and aspirin. On the other extreme, when the master control device (such as a computer) fails, one does not attempt home remedies. A "brain" specialist is called in. It is, however, crucial that the patient be able to clearly describe his symptoms. Getting down to the case at hand, a complex system consisting of field instruments, instrument racks, interface equipment, and perhaps a computer, may require maintenance at all levels. At the field equipment end where physical damage, corrosive atmospheres, reconfiguration, and routine calibration checks are common, the customer has the opportunity to develop a competent staff of maintenance people. The relatively high maintenance activity assures competence through repetition.

Comminution, being the energy intensive part of a mining operation receives much scrutiny by cost controllers, CEO’s, investors and others as the mining industry goes “back to basics” to reverse the decline in productivity which occurred during the mining super cycle. Blasting is the first and lowest cost per ton stage in the comminution value chain. The basic principle that effective blast design can optimize fragmentation from the Run of Mine (ROM) ore muck pile to improve productivity through digging, loading and crushing to grinding and increase mine site profits has been well documented. Benefits of controlling fragmentation in the blast include reduced wear on equipment, faster loading, increased truck loads while detecting oversize rocks at the muck pile can reduce the frequency of a blocked primary crusher. A second basic principle is a measure of particle size distribution (PSD) at each unit operation in the comminution cycle allows engineers to manage blast design to produce fragmentation in the ROM ore most suitable to optimize downstream unit processes to improve mine site productivity and profits. Split-Online® systems have measured PSD of rocks on conveyors from the primary crusher to the SAG mill for over 20 years. Split-Engineering partnered with various mining companies to develop Split-ShovelCam® to automatically measure fragmentation from shovels and excavators working the ROM muck pile. This paper takes the reader “Back to Basics” by discussing the use of real time fragmentation analysis at the muck pile as an important parameter to optimize energy factors required for each blast. Case studies are given. INTRODUCTION The basics of mining are: • Explore for and find economic resources of valuable minerals • Mine rocks containing valuable minerals using blasting • Crush and grind rocks to liberate valuable minerals (comminution) • Recover valuable minerals for sale Comminution is an energy intensive process which accounts for a major proportion of mine site costs. Effective blasting can improve comminution and deliver significant reductions to mine site unit costs, (CEEC, 2016). Engineers, scientists, builders and even philosophers have long promoted the phrase “measure to manage”; the premise being “you can’t improve what you don’t measure”. Blast Engineers measure fragmentation in ROM ore for feedback to manage energy input in the design of blast patterns to optimize the ROM product size for downstream operations, whether they be for ROM Leach or feed into the primary crusher.

"The flotation behaviors of diaspore and three kinds of silicate minerals - kaolinite, illite and pyrophyllite - using an organosilicon cationic surfactant as collector were investigated as functions of reagent concentration and pulp pH. The results show that the organosilicon cationic collector QAS122 is a suitable collector for the flotation of aluminosilicate minerals but has weak collecting ability with regard to diaspore, enabling the flotation separation of diaspore from silicate minerals using QAS122 as collector. The flotation of a bauxite ore was then studied in detail. Finally, a reverse flotation separation process was used to process a low-grade bauxite ore. It was concluded that use of the organosilicon cationic collector is effective. A concentrate with aluminum oxide (Al2O3) to silicon dioxide (SiO2) mass ratio, or A/S, of 9.67 was obtained from natural bauxite ore with A/S of 6.07 at pH of around 11. The Al2O3 recovery rate was 81.72 percent. IntroductionChina has abundant bauxite ore resources, but more than 98 percent of the bauxite ores are the diasporic type, with the characteristics of complex mineral composition, low aluminum oxide (Al2O3) to silicon dioxide (SiO2) mass ratio, or A/S, and difficulty of processing. The gangue minerals in bauxite ores are mainly kaolinite, pyrophyllite and illite, containing titanium and iron impurities (Zong et al., 2008). It is known that high-grade bauxite ore, with A/S greater than 8, can be processed directly by the Bayer process (Papanastassiou et al., 2002; Ma et al., 1996). However, Chinese diasporic ores have been processed mainly by the sintering process, which is environmentally damaging and energy intensive. Increasing the A/S of the diasporic ores using a flotation method is needed (Xia et al., 2010).Froth flotation is one of the most widely used processes to concentrate valuable minerals in beneficiation ores. It is particularly useful for separating finely ground ores from their associated gangue minerals. For diasporic bauxite ores, flotation is applied to obtain high-quality material for the Bayer process by increasing the A/S. Direct flotation has been shown to be an efficient method for the desilicating of diasporic bauxite ore (Wang et al., 2004; Xu et al., 2004), but reverse flotation has more advantages for this purpose, including less collector consumption, less foaming product and less effect on metallurgy (Liu et al., 2007; Hu et al., 2003; Hu, 2003; Luo et al., 2001)."

Requirements for full extraction in underground coal mining call for inexpensive, safe, techniques to be competitive with conventional methods. Longwall and shortwall systems are to some extent employed for this purpose. Another method would be rib pillar extraction (and pillar extraction). These methods are compared with each other with respect to procedure, equipment, safety, roof control, investment, output, performance, costs The advantages of r.p.e. show this method very attractive. Number and cost of equipment are lowest. Safety and roof control becomes improved by a mobile roof support recently developed in Austria. Its successful use in the R.S.A. is being explained.

Ever since the industrial Revolution both major and small companies have put much emphasis on the use of incentives to compensate top management for extra effort and extra skill. For many years industries have also provided hourly rate employees with incentive plans. More recently incentive plans have been extended to include the "front line" supervisors. Many companies have what are called Christmas bonus or profit-sharing plans. The incentives for foremen in mining, which we shall discuss, differ from such bonus plans in that the incentives are paid on a definite measured performance for each individual, and thus directly reflect his effort and skill. What is the objective for paying incentives? The objective for any part of an industrial Engineering Program is to increase productivity and reduce unit cost. The unit cost must include the entire cost of the program. From what base do we start an incentive plan? One should think of art incentive program as the top rung of the Industrial Engineering ladder. Therefore, a company must take several steps before reaching this top rung. All grade control methods in use currently by the mining industry are imprecise. The methods suffer from being locally inaccurate, leading to are loss and contact dilution. An ore/waste indicator variable can be used to predict the probability of ore occurrence at a given location, Po. Then, an ore grade Zo for an ore location and a waste grade Zw for a waste location are obtained. The expected revenue is calculated at each location, based on its probability of being are or waste, the corresponding grade, and on the cost of mining and processing the ore or the waste. Finally, the decision of whether to recover the block is based on the expected revenue value for that block. The method is illustrated with an example taken from the Jerritt Canyon district in northeastern Nevada.

"During the past nine years the number of cellular phones connected to a network has increased from 34 percent of the world’s population in 2005 to 93 percent in 2014. These phones are powered by a combination of materials including elements such as gold, silver, copper and rare earths. And, as more parts of the world become connected to networks, the number of phones being produced, and the elements they will need, will continue to increase. The demand comes as prices for these commodities are slumping and access to the commodities is getting more difficult, technically and socially.These mobile devices have connected people around the world in ways that could not have been imagined two decades before, and, ironically, this communication has strengthened opposition to the development of the mines that produce the very materials they need to operate.In his keynote address to the 2014 SME Arizona Conference at the JW Starr Pass Resort in Tucson, AZ, on Dec. 8, 2014, John O. Marsden, SME President and president of Metallurgium, spoke to more than 500 attendees about the challenge to produce the materials that society needs while at the same time challenging the general public’s perception of mining that is often inaccurate and less than favorable.Marsden highlighted the amount of raw materials that will be needed not just for phones, but also for things such as automobiles, including electric cars, as a way to illustrate the importance of mining. Even so-called green products such as Tesla cars, which require about 317 kg (700 lbs) of aluminum, 13 kg (30 lbs) of copper and 36 kg (80 lbs) of cobalt for their eco-friendly batteries, will need materials mining provides.These are some of the numbers that the general public is often unaware of. They are part of the necessary things that mining provides for society but are rarely reported on. Instead, it is the accidents like the tailings spill at the Mount Polley Mine in British Columbia and at the Buena Vista Mine (Sonora, Mexico) that grab headlines and stick in the minds of the public, adding more challenges to an industry that already has its own complex technical challenges to deal with."

In efforts to improve ingress/egress from the existing subway platforms in PATH’s Exchange Place Station, a new 18-foot horseshoe cross-passage tunnel was constructed by Walsh Construction who retained Kilduff Underground Engineering for design of the initial support system and to install and maintain geotechnical instrumentation. The project presented some unique challenges as a result of the proximity to pedestrians on the platform. PATH service remained uninterrupted, limiting the Contractor to mechanical means of excavation to advance the heading. The logistics proved very challenging for the approximate 100-foot-long tunnel excavated in soft Manhattan Schist. This paper will present the design and construction challenges for the project.

The recession that began in late 1980 has proved to be not only prolonged and severe, but in certain ways unique in its effect on the mineral industries among the periods of economic slowdown experienced in the Western world since the end of World War II. This time almost all minerals have been affected. In previous business turndowns, by contrast, some mineral sectors have with-stood economic adversity well. They experienced little or no adverse effect-thanks either to a strong secular expansion in the markets for their particular product or to specific factors that caused demand to be well maintained. For example, aluminum, molybdenum, and nickel are three metals that enjoyed extraordinary growth in applications during the years 1946-1973. These metals were little affected during the recessions that occurred in that era. Similarly, coal did not suffer a pronounced drop in sales in the 1974-75 turndown because, with the price of oil rising sharply, a switch away from oil and back to coal was clearly indicated for some energy-intensive applications. Oil itself was largely impervious to the ups and downs of the business cycle until very recently. And the precious metals, gold and silver, have often been regarded as benefiting from reduced economic activity because labor becomes more available, productivity rises, and operating costs diminish. In the current recession, however, no major mineral has escaped the broad trend. The secular growth factors that were previously so evident for aluminum, molybdenum, and nickel have disappeared, at least temporarily. The stable pricing behavior that previously characterized all three of these commodities has been replaced by extreme price weakness and apparent inability of the major producers to continue their roles as market leaders. Coal and oil both have suffered from a sharp drop in energy requirements. There are those who now anticipate a collapse of the market control over oil prices so clearly exercised by OPEC since 1973. If oil prices are no longer effectively controlled by the governments of the exporting countries, then coal prices are also certain to be affected. And the combination of high interest rates, tight money, and a change in public perceptions of precious metals put the skid under gold and silver quotations in 1981 and early 1982. Although inflation has been viewed as the scourge of most Western countries ever since the oil crises of 1973-74, prices-in constant dollars-of most minerals have not risen. On the contrary, with the exception of the precious metals and oil, for most minerals the prices that prevailed at the end of 1982 were close to the levels of the Great Depression of the 1930s in constant dollar terms. Table 1 compares prices for copper, lead, zinc, and aluminum at the end of 1982 with the average prices in 1934, stated in constant 1967 dollars. This emphasis on prices for mineral commodities reflects the fact that profits of mining enterprises vary directly with the level of prices. Manufacturing and retailing enterprises march to a different tune. They establish sales prices based on costs. Their profits tend to vary with volume. Commodities are for all practical purposes fungible, that is the advantages of known brands in marketing manufactured goods have little application in a commodity market. Thus the individual seller of minerals is unable to establish his sales prices. Except where a monopoly is present, he must sell at the going market. His option is to abstain from selling if he finds the price unremunerative. In past recessions, some mineral producers chose to do precisely that-either accumulating a substantial share of their output in inventory or, in prolonged downturns, abstaining from production. During the current recession, however, private-sector mining companies did not have the option of accumulating inventories to any great extent. Capital costs for new mineral projects or for expansion of existing facilities have escalated at an alarming rate since the early 1970s. Added to this has been the heavy cost of installing pollution control or safety equipment to comply with the regulations adopted in most industrialized countries (and particularly the United States) since 1968. The consequence has been that the financial position of most major mineral enterprises in mid-1980 was already strained. To finance increased inventories meant incurring additional funded debt at high interest costs, thus impairing the concern's credit rating. Management Choices Private-sector managements have had to face up to the alternative of either continuing to produce at an unchanged rate and marketing output at unremunerative prices or reducing output. One of the most dramatic innovations in the materials handling industry has been the development of stacker cranes and automated material handling systems. The stacker crane with its many capabilities and the development of reliable industrial automation controls have combined to produce dramatic achievements in an area once characterized by inefficiency lack of management attention, and capital investment. In many areas of application however, stacker cranes and high rise storage systems have been designed and installed with insufficient thought given to their integration into the overall operations of the plant or distribution facility. This paper will look at some new and interesting breakthroughs in the integration of stacker cranes and high rise storage systems into the total manufacturing plant system. In this paper we will refer to both bridge type stacker cranes and aisle stackers. The bridge type stacker crane was developed first and was initially developed with forks or other handling devices hoisted up and down a rigid or telescopic mast. This mast system was suspended from a trolley mounted on an overhead crane bridge. Today, the primary application of the bridge type stacker is in warehousing systems for handling basic metal products such as coils, bars, sheets and plates. There is no question that the bridge type stacker has achieved notable results in storage and handling of these commodities. However, a new area for stacker crane application has been developing which in many cases over-shadows the accomplishments in the storage area. This is the application of the bridge stacker as an integral part of the manufacturing processes, or in other terms the production applications of stacker cranes. The stacker crane has a number of attributes which makes these applications very important. First, the crane bridge provides the stable platform for the mounting of machinery which can accommodate the hoisting and lateral movement of large capacity loads. Today stacker cranes are being built with capacities of up to 30 - 40 tons. The bridge cranes can easily accomplish accommodation Of these large tonnages. Secondly, the mast system provides a stable platform for the mounting of a wide variety of manipulating devices which can be used for the placement of material into manufacturing processes, the extraction of this material from these processes, and movement to other points in the process area. These attributes combined with excellent operator control and safety have led to development of the stacker crane as a production tool.

In the comparison and consideration of synthetic and natural materials, graphites represent a situation in which natural graphites amount to less than 10% of the total carbon and graphite production by weight, and less than 5% in dollar volume, There are few applications where it could not be re- placed by synthetic graphite. On the contrary, synthetic graphite materials can be engineered to cover an extremely wide range of applications. These include electrographite brushes for rotating machinery, pyrolytic graphite, graphite-impervious pipe, nuclear moderators, high purity spectrographic graphite, power tube anodes, graphite rotary shaft seals, and rocket nozzles. The special qualities of natural graphite and its limitations are delineated and the almost unlimited possibilities in artificial graphite materials are discussed.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion widens the existing I-64 four-lane bridge-tunnel corridor to eight lanes through construction of two parallel tunnels, interstate widening, and bridge expansions. The design-build contract was awarded to Hampton Roads Connector Partners with HDR and Mott MacDonald retained as lead designers in a Design Joint Venture. This paper will highlight some of the e challenges related to the design of the twin bored tunnels from spaceproong, tunnel enabling wors, segmental lining design and durability considerations.

In recent years in situ leach mining has emerged as a viable technology for the recovery of uranium from strata in South Texas which contain relatively low concentrations of uranium ore. Because the ore bodies lie within groundwater aquifers, a significant determinant in the economics is the requirement that such aquifers be protected from contaminantion. Since ammonia is one of the constituents of the leach solutions now being field tested, one environ- mental problem to be resolved is the removal of ammonia at the end of mining. A second related question is the fate of the ammonia which is not removed by the restoration procedure. This paper considers the displacement and migration of ammonium in a flowing electrolyte with concomitant ion exchange. The ion exchange is an important feature since, during the solution mining phase, ammonium saturates the mineral exchange sites and must be removed from these sites. A mathematical model is used to simulate this process and the model is tested against the results of laboratory experiments. It is found that the simulations are adequate if an appropriate selection of parameters is made. The model is then used to investigate the effect of cation composition and concentration of the restoration medium as well as dispersion on the overall effectiveness of the process. It is concluded that increasing the concentration of monovalent ions in a solution containing a mixture of both monovalent and divalent ions decreases the adsorption selectivity of the divalent ions with respect to all monovalent ions including ammonium. Thus increasing the ionic concentration of a restoration fluid by increasing the concentration of a nonselectively adsorbed (with respect to ammonium) ion may have a very limited benefit. Dispersion attending the flow of fluids in a porous medium is also shown to be an important factor. The effect of dispersion can greatly reduce the benefits of having a displacing cation which is adsorbed selectively with respect to ammonium. Since dispersion increases almost linearly with fluid velocity, an optimum displacement rate may exist.

To operate the Morris Fork Preparation Plant with a closed water circuit has been an elusive goal for Union Carbide. The benefits of a closed circuit have never been questioned. The removal of fine solids from washery water makes possible the recirculation and reuse of the water. Heavy media drag tanks and other separating machines perform better and more consistently with washery essentially free of fine solids. Finally, the production of a clarified effluent makes unnecessary the sludge ponds usually associated with a coal preparation plant. Why then do I say elusive? Because, since plant design was completed in 1970 we have been in hot pursuit of an ever-growing fine solids problem. In four years the minus 28 mesh material in the plant feed has nearly doubled. The replacement of conventional sections with continuous mining machines has led to a lowering in size and quality of product from the mine. In addition, increasing emphasis underground on roadway clean-up has contributed to the fines problem.

While not well established, there is evidence that the mining industry is encumbered by several work-related fatigue risk factors. Compared to other industries, mine workers are more likely to report inadequate sleep and work longer hours per day. Given these observations, there is a critical need to identify effective ways to intervene, manage, and mitigate mine worker fatigue and sleepiness when present. One barrier to this is confusion around the similarities and differences between fatigue and sleepiness, which can result in these terms being treated as interchangeable regardless of context and make it difficult to assess and mitigate safety risk.

This document describes the challenging task of mining through tiebacks using a 21'-8" diameter Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) as part of the Ship Canal Water Quality Project. The mining operation involves navigating through 17 tie-backs that are evenly spaced at 8-foot intervals, with many intersecting the full face of the cutterhead. Detailed analysis and review of TBM parameters specific to this area have been conducted to ensure operational efficiency and safety. Hyperbaric interventions have been planned and coordinated, encompassing pre-mining preparations, continuous monitoring and adjustments during the mining process, as well as post-mining measures. The document highlights the complexity and importance of strategic planning and execution to successfully overcome the tie-back intersections during the mining operation.

The renaissance in extractive metallurgical practices for gold and silver recovery is far from over. This is one conclusion of a three year investigation into innovations in Cold & Silver Recovery by Randol International Ltd. (1981, 1983). The six volume reference report reviews a host of new processes and innovative applications of older metallurgical practices. Some of these were summarized by von Michaelis (1982, 1982a). There are several reasons to expect this renaissance to continue. One reason is the nature of gold and silver deposits. The list of known occurrences of These metals is very extensive. There are literally tens of thousands of prospects but over 99% of these are too low grade, too small or too refractory for a viable operation employing conventional processing.

Several major impediments threaten the successful delivery of tunnel and under-ground construction projects. In addition to technical design and construction risks associated with tunnel projects, many of which are well understood, budgetary pressures, funding constraints and the complexity of procuring, administering and executing multiple concur-rent projects in a large program could also have a catastrophic impact on the program?s objectives. Contributing factors often include poorly managed design, procurement, construction, managerial, organizational, market and stake-holder risks, as well as nonconforming inputs or outputs to the costs and schedule, or any other potential inabilities to deliver the required or desired results. A strategy to prevent ?failure? of a project requires a proactive and holistic approach to risk management. Through planning, identification, analysis, management, monitoring and control of the project?s risks (both threats and opportunities), attention to management of risk will in-crease the probability and impact of positive events and decrease the probability and impact of events adverse to a project?s objectives.

A couple of miles southwest of the town of Saltville in the western tip of Virginia is a little village called Plasterco. Gypsum has been produced in this area since about the year 1815, being originally found as small outcrops at the surface. Production in the early days was very small, and the use of the mineral was limited to that of "land plaster" or ground gypsum which was spread on the land to sweeten the soil. In the late 1800's, a small calcining plant was constructed and the production of gypsum plaster began. About this same time, the surface rock was depleted and it became necessary to begin underground mining operations in order to maintain a continuous supply of raw material. The United States Gypsum Company became interested in this property in 1909, and has operated there ever since, having enlarged the calcining mill and built a plant for the manufacture of gypsum wall-board in the middle 1920's. Production of gypsum continues from underground' mining operations, and the present mine at Plasterco is now about 1,000 feet below the surface, making it the deepest gypsum mine' in the world.
