Calcium carbonate is one of the most widely used industrial minerals in applications like cement, lime, agriculture, power plant fluegas desulfurization (FGD) and construction aggregates. Most applications are generally high-volume and low value ($9/t or $10/st) or less free-on-board (f.o.b.) mine site) uses of this material. Specialty uses of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) are typically referred to as ?performance mineral? or ?extender and ?ller? applications. Primary specialty markets for GCC include paper and plastics as well as a number of construction applications including joint compounds, carpet backing, paint, and adhesives, caulks and sealants (ACS). Other important specialty applications for GCC include rubber, food and personal care products. A new and growing application for GCC is in nonwoven fabrics, where this mineral replaces a small percentage of the polymer. Typical specialty applications for GCC are color sensitive and require extremely white/bright materials. Although deposits of limestone are located in most states, high brightness resources are relatively rare and controlled by a limited group of suppliers.

During the 1970's geostatisticians were often accused of not paying sufficient attention to geologic features in the computerised generation of ore reserves. Unfortunately this charge was all -too-often justified and the results of such studies tended to be oversimplified and failed to reveal the full potential of computerised reserve estimation and geostatistical methods. There were some notable exceptions to this trend. Techniques were described that paid a great deal of respect to the geologic characteristics peculiar to certain deposits (Rendu J-M, 1984, Barnes T. E., 1982). At Gold Fields several techniques have been developed for handling the geologic characteristics of ore bodies for reserve estimation purposes. These have developed over time and the evolution of their adoption has been a reflection of our own learning experience from the practical application of computerised reserve estimation on many precious metal s deposits. Problems Typical problems that have been experienced by ourselves and which we have learned to guard against and watch for are: ? "smearing" at geologic contacts ? confusion caused by disparate "selective mining unit sizes" and block sizes ? conflicting estimates generated by field staff using various versions of the polygonal method ? problems in generating meaningful variograms

INTRODUCTION Zortman Mining Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pegasus Gold Corporation of Spokane, Washington. Pegasus has been producing gold and silver from the Zortman and Landusky mines since 1979. The Zortman and Landusky mines are two distinct open pit mines located approximately 6 kilometers apart in the Little Rockies Mining District of north central Montana. The two mines use large-tonnage, low- grade heap leaching techniques to efficiently process the gold and silver ore. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Little Rockies rise abruptly 914 metres from the surrounding plains to about 1829 metres above sea level. The topography is quite steep, making efficient leach pad construction a major challenge. The climate is semi-arid with moderate summers and occasionally severe winters. Freezing temperatures usually arrive in late October or early November, influencing the effectiveness of leaching operations. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY The geology of the Little Rocky Mountains consists of steeply dipping sedimentary ridges forming an elliptical dome surrounding a core of intruding syenite porphyry. Within the syenite porphyry are well fractured and mineralized shear zones where the existing reserves and open pits are located. The ore is presently divided into oxidized, mixed, and sulfide. Only the oxides and mixed zones that are of ore grade are placed on the leach pads. The syenite porphyry host rock enables effective leaching of gold and silver to depths of 61 metres, having a major impact on leach pad construction costs. MINING All mining since 1979 has been by contractor. This enabled initial mining to commence without capital investment in equipment. Through competitive negotiations, Pegasus has been able to keep contract mining costs at levels very close to what would be experienced if Pegasus had purchased equipment initially. Contracts are negotiated yearly and are based on a unit price and haul distance for ore and waste. Haul distances have ranged from as little as 457 metres to as much as 3,050 metres. At present, Pegasus is developing a 27,000,000-tonne leach pad at the Landusky project that is adjacent to the minine area. This design feature will reduce the mining cost by 20 percent over the life of the mine. In 1987, over 5,900,000 tonnes of ore and 3,200,000 tonnes of waste will be mined at the Landusky project. Through 1986, 13,763,000 tonnes of ore have been mined at a waste-to-ore strip ratio of 0.60:l at the Zortman project, and 13,005,000 tonnes of ore at a waste-to-ore strip ratio of 0.79:l have been mined at the Landusky project. Current mining reserves are 32,769,000 tonnes of ore at a waste- to-ore strip ratio of 0.59:l. Through efficiencies of large-scale heap leaching, Pegasus has been able to lower the mining cutoff from 0.34 grams per tonne gold to 0.27 grams per tonne gold. This has reduced the mining cost per tonne of ore h percent through a reduction in strip ratio of 14 percent. Beginning in 1984, all pits were designed based on computer-generated "floating cone" pits. The geologic models were developed by Pegasus staff with a series of economic models evaluated. The resulting computer-generated pits were used as a guideline in designing the mine plans, including haul roads for final calculation of tons and grade. Input to the floating cone models consisted of mining cost, processing cost, cutoff grade (0.34 grams gold per tonne), recovery (67 percent) and gold price. Due to the gold being deposited primarily on the fractures of the syenite host rock, no crushing of ore is needed prior to leaching. This characteristic of the ore is a key in being able to profitably mine and process gold ore at an average grade of 0.69 grams of gold per tonne. Strict blasting control is also a key in success of the leaching operation. A system of splitting ore and waste in blast patterns has been devised to reduce dilution. Unit Rig & Equipment Co., manufacturer of Lectra Haul Trucks, is continually studying methods of reducing the operating costs of large haulage trucks. Reduction of haulage system operating costs is an important goal that equipment operators and equipment manufacturers constantly try to improve on. One of the most variable and important factors affecting operating costs is actual truck operating practices. An examination was centered on methods to optimize truck utilizaion. It was found that a very effective method of accomplishing this goal would be an Automatic Truck Control (ATC) system to automatically control a fleet of haulage trucks in a predetermined pattern. Economic studies were conducted which showed a very favorable reduction in mine operating costs by use of an ATC system. In 1970, Unit Rig & Equipment Company, in conjunction with SAAB-SCANIA began preliminary development of adapting for truck use a proven automated control system previously used for train systems, small trucks, and military target vehicles.

Hydrophobic particles with diameters between 1 and 3 mm are poorly recovered by conventional flotation techniques. A novel reverse flotation technique is described whereby coarse particles with surfaces rendered highly hydrophobic, repel the bubble films in a froth and thus drop through the froth under gravity, to be recovered as a sink product. Conversely, gangue or hydrophilic particles are supported by the bubble films in the froth and are therefore recovered as a floating product. Tracer tests were conducted in the cell in order to study the dynamic behaviour of solid particles in the froth. The effects of hydrophobicity, density, particle size and particle shape were investigated experimentally. The higher the hydrophobicity of the particles, the lower the recovery of particles as a floating product, while the recovery of particles as a sink product increases with an increase in particle density. Furthermore, a decrease in particle size results in an increase recovery of hydrophobic particles as a floating product. When treating particles of the same mass-to-surface-area ratio in the froth, flat particles would be recovered as a floating product in preference to cubic, disc-shaped, cylindrical and spherical particles, in that order.

Waste treatment in the mining industry is by no means a new problem to this field. In a sense, the entire process from ore to finished product is one of waste treatment - the separation of a relatively minor quantity of desired component from valueless material. Where it has been necess-ary or economical to practice conventional waste treatment or pollution control methods, such as dust collection, water recovery from tailings, or impounding of residues for future treatment, this has been done. Generally the containment of hazardous pollutants such as arsenic and cyanide also has been followed in modern times. But it is only recently, with the public outcry for the elimination of all forms of pollution, "that the industry has been forced to solve what often appears to be a myriad of difficult and costly waste treatment problems, or be faced with the alternative of closing down the operation. It is the objective of this paper to describe new as well as conventional approaches to these problems, specifically as might be applicable to liquid-solids separation methods. Host wastes in the industry are present either as solutions or slurries, or can be most advantageously handled by conversion to this form, such as in scrubbing noxious gases and dusts with water. Separation of the solids and purification of the aqueous effluents are, therefore, often the principle problems.

The measurement principle of the Coulter Counter for particle size analyses is described. The application of the Coulter Counter to cement particle content and size analysis and to the size distribution of clinker from standard grindability tests are described. Methods of calibration, sample preparation and data reduction are presented. The results of the analyses obtained are compared with characteristics associated with performance showing both concordance and non-concordance of test data., Future uses of the Coulter Counter for particle size analysis in research and plant control adaptations are indicated.

"To meet the growing need for CO2 capture and storage technology, Michigan Technological University is studying CO2 capture using alkali-based solvents. The objective of the present study was to find a way to increase the absorption rate of CO2 into an alkali solution without reducing the absorption capacity of the solution. One approach to increasing absorption rate is to use a surfactant to chemically alter the gas bubble size. The surfactant chosen for the study was a neutral-charge polypropylene glycol methyl ether (PPGME) with a molecular weight of 200. Experiments were conducted to study the absorption rate of CO2 at varying surfactant concentrations. Results showed that as the concentration of PPGME increased in solution, the absorption rate also increased. The CO2 absorption rate increased from 3.45 x 10-3 mol/min CO2 at 0g/L PPGME to 3.92 x 10-3 mol/min CO2 at 0.48 g/L PPGME. This amounted to a 14% increase in the CO2 absorption rate with no decrease in the absorption capacity of the solution. IntroductionChemical absorption using an amine solvent is currently the most mature carbon capture and storage technology available. Amines are advantageous in that they have a fast CO2 absorption rate, which leads to a high CO2 removal efficiency. However, amine absorption has some considerable drawbacks, such as high energy requirements, high equipment corrosion rates, amine degradation in the presence of oxygen, high waste generation and a large increase in plant footprint if new equipment is constructed (Herzog and Golomb, 2004; D’Alessandro et al., 2010). Due to these drawbacks, Michigan Technological University (MTU) is studying CO2 absorption using alkali-based solvents, which address the above disadvantages of amine solvents."

For most geologists and miners the term "asbestos" refers to a group of highly fibrous silicate minerals that readily separate into long, thin, strong fibers of sufficient flexibility to be woven, are heat resistant and chemically inert, and possess a high electric insulation and therefore are suitable for? uses where incombustible, nonconductive or chemically resistant material is required. The United States Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA) specifically refers to the naturally occurring minerals chrysotile. amosite, crocidolite, termolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos as "asbestos" if the individual crystal fragments have the following dimensions; length -greater than 5 micrometers, maximum diameter -less than 5 micrometers, and a length to diameter ratio of 3 or greater. Since asbestos has been identified as one of the ten most carcinogenic substances (a cancer causing agent) it has become, for many government regulatory agencies, a major issue concerning banning emissions to the environment.

Agglomeration developments in the iron ore industry of North America are closely related to shifting patterns in commercially acceptable ore grades and even the definition of iron ores. These relationships have occurred mainly during the last 20 years. Many of these changes are an outgrowth of events which involved the history of the Mesabi Range. Although magnetic taconites had been discovered in the Lake Superior area about 1870, they remained unvrorked in part for lack of concentration methods and a generally unfavorable economic climate. Some 20 years later the rich Mesabi hematites were found beginning the era of direct shipping ores which continued through World War II. These Lake Superior iron ores included reserves of an estimated three billion tons. Following World War II, decreasing ore grades and rising costs began to force the closing of many underground iron mines. The early 50's saw the beginning of the decline in direct shipping ores and a spurt in produc- tion of natural iron concentrates. However, the market for unprocessed concentrates began to decline in the early 60's as agglomerated products and foreign ore s began to dominate the U. S. market.

During the past five years, mining operations have had access to press technology for piping and joint fittings that can save owners a significant amount of time when installing or replacing pipes by eliminating the need for welding or threading. Viega, with North American headquarters in Wichita, KA, entered the mining sector in 2009, adding to its already expanding industrial sector. Since then, the company?s global engineering department has paid considerable attention to its industrial division, bringing its expertise in plumbing solutions for residential and commercial buildings to the mining and mineral extraction industry. ?We have a lot of applications in the mining industry.?We have a lot of applications in the mining industry throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico and continue to expand in the mining industry,? Tom Shields, Viega?s director for industrial accounts explained. ?Since we made the decision to increase our presence in the industrial markets, we have been aggressive and more than 240 applications have been approved by our engineering department in Germany.? Getting approval from Viega?s engineering department is no small feat. During a tour of the manufacturing facilities in Ennest and Großheringen, Germany, Mining Engineering, as well as a select few other publications and clients, were shown Viega?s manufacturing process. At the Ennest facility, hundreds of millions of fittings are produced, and each one is inspected mechanically and with a laser at the end of the production line. With four production facilities in Germany and one in the United States, Viega is able to ship to anywhere in the world. The company distributes everything from fittings to stainless steel pipe.

This paper presents talc milling guided by a theme of "So You Want to Be In The Talc Business". Such a theme strikes a cautionary note to warn the uninitiated of potential pitfalls, and this paper will cover briefly some of the technical traps as well as one of the larger talc milling operations. It is important to our purpose to pre- sent some of the market and mineral complications that make the business of producing and selling industrial talcs much more intricate than an outsider would perceive. Metal markets by comparison are great worldwide pools into which production streams of generally identical metals can flow over a weir of market prices. Industrial talc markets are not as well defined and often must be developed by the producer working closely with a specific customer or groups of customers to prove out the attributes of the specific product from a new property. All the negatives of a new market seem to work against the introductory talc in the forms of industry or customer reluctance to change, sales prices, cost of delivery, mode of transportation, health considerations of the minerals and many more. Just locating the potential customers for a new industrial talc may be a substantial undertaking. Thus, an analogy of the worldwide metal market might compare starting a new talc operation to trying to gather up enough fallen rain drops to be able to start a production stream of a worthwhile size.

Attrition scrubbers may not be glamorous, but they are an important and sometimes neglected step in mineral processing. Optimal attritioning will significantly improve the results and efficiencies of subsequent processing steps and can lead to reduced costs and improved product yields. Why is attrition scrubbing used? Attrition means to wear away a surface, typically by friction or abrasion. An attrition scrubber does exactly this, using impellers to force particles against each other, causing intense scrubbing, grinding, abrasion and polishing. This process is not a new concept. It has long been used in the glass industry to remove surface contaminants from silica. But it is also widely used in many areas of mineral processing and other applications including soil remediation and plastics recycling. In mineral separation, for example, the scrubbers help improve yield and efficiencies by preparing feed materials for downstream processes such as flotation, magnetic or electrostatic separation. Inefficient scrubbing can lead to coatings remaining on valuable minerals and decreased yields, as the covered minerals cannot be processed efficiently or are mistaken as waste contaminates and removed. In the example of flotation separation, pre-flotation conditioning uses attrition scrubbers to provide better recovery of minerals while using fewer chemicals. If surface contaminants remain on the mineral, yield is reduced, as the unwanted coating acts as a barrier to the reactants, which make it unfloatable and, therefore, unrecoverable.

Today the standard method for grinding ore is the wet process. This is mainly due to the fact that the downstream process is wet and considering the total circuit dry grinding is not the most eco­nomical method for the comminution of the ore. Presently in gold ore processing dry grinding is only applied in cases where whole ore roasting is required downstream from the milling plant or if organic carbonaceous matters and sulfides are the primary reasons for the refractoriness. Since dry ore can be fed to the roaster, a dry grinding mill can advantageously be applied. In cases where d1y grinding could be applied advantageously for instance if the ore contains water soluble material and wet grinding is not possible there are serious concerns prevailing within the industty against this technology due to several reasons. Besides of the aspects as discussed later in this paper, there are several plants in operation with little success and considerable operational prob­lems. The reasons for this often lie in the fact that the several com­ponents of such a plant are bought from independent sources with­out considering the system requirements. It is essential that the dry grinding plants require accurate design between drying, pneumatic transport and grinding of the ore in the circuit. This paper will address some of these concerns raised in the industiy from a mill vendor's view along with discussing the development for the selection and configuration of the various dty grinding circuits.

Overexcavation and ground loss events during pressurized-face TBMadvance in soft ground can result in unplanned deformations above the tunnel and damage to existing infrastructure. Successfully managing the risk of this occurring is crucial for any project in an urban area to proceed. Common risk management approaches include a combination of establishing suitable ranges of TBM operational parameters and using geotechnical instrumentation for deformation monitoring. Another risk management tool is material flow reconciliation, which varies depending on the specified mining method and the equipment choices by the contractor. This paper compares recent and ongoing projects in the Pacific Northwest regarding overexcavation risk management.

The Granduc ore body is located beneath glacial terrain on the borders of British Columbia and Alaska, some 600 miles from Vancouver and 30 miles from Tidewater at Stewart, B. C. The concentrator and attendant facilities are located in wilderness country at an elevation of 2500 feet. The average annual snowfall is 65 feet. Surface facilities and ore body are linked by a 10 mile railroad haulage tunnel. This copper property has been developed by Granduc Operating Company on behalf of Newmont Mining Corporation and American Smelting and Refining Co. First production started in November, 1970. In August, 1966, Granduc Operating Company awarded an engineering and construction management contract to McKee-Swan Wooster, a joint venture of A. G. McKee of Canada and Swan Wooster Engineering Company Limited, to design a concentrator to treat approximately 7000 tons of ore per day. The isolated location of the Granduc ore body indicated comparatively high freight rates on consumable items of concentrator supplies such as reagents, grinding media, etc. A firm flowsheet for the flotation of the Granduc ores having been developed by the Danbury laboratory of Newmont Exploration Limited, attention was devoted to means of reducing operating costs. One obvious method was to reduce or eliminate the costs of steel grinding media by employing some form of autogenous grinding. two pilot plant operations were carried out at the facilities of Lakefield Research of Canada Limited, in which autogenous grinding of Granduc ores was investigated. This report summarizes the results of preliminary investigations concerning the influence of block caving mining upon adjacent mine openings and discusses possible methods for reducing critical rock pressures and damage to these openings. These investigations are one part of a general study of the rock mechanics of block caving by the Denver Mining Research Center of the Federal Bureau of Mines. The purpose of this part of the study Is to obtain an estimate of the stress concentrations around mine openings adjacent to block caving stopes for use in developing better designed openings and improving mining methods. When mine openings such as slusher drifts, grizzly drifts, and haulage drifts are damaged by rock pressures induced by block caving mining, the mining cost increases, mine production decreases, and ore recovery may be consider- ably lessened. Methods of mining that result in lower rock pressures and methods of design that enable mine openings to withstand these pressures are desirable. The development of these methods, in turn, requires a fuller understanding of the following: The stres concentrations around the mine openings and the changes in stress induced by adjacent mining; the physical properties, such as the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of the rock surrounding the openings; and the support supplied by the concrete lining, timber sets, or other types of supports used in the openings.

Olivine has been an accepted industrial mineral for the last 50 years. Its initial acceptance was based on the recognition of its refractory properties by European research workers in the middle to late 1920's. Initial U.S. olivine production began in the early 1930's in North Carolina and continues there today. Olivine also is produced in the State of Washington and in other countries.

In many cases the roof strata of a bedded deposit may be considered as a composite of rock beams of rectangular cross section, whose component layers differ in thickness and may or may not be separable from each other when they are subjected to loading by their own weight. An analytical study of the behavior of such multiple-layer beams is extremely difficult owing to the heterogeneity and anisotropy of rock materials. The complexity is revealed by the fringe photographs obtained from several series of barodynamic photostress experiments conducted on various types of multiple-layer model beams of a medium-grained Bedford limestone. Further discussion on the applicability of barodynamic photostress techniques to the model study of the behavior of mine roofs in stratified geologic media is presented by comparing the phenomenological observations recorded in this investigation.
