Although more than 100 thorium-rare earth minerals are known, only a few have any commercial significance. Monazite, thorite, bastnasite, and some exotic thorium rare earth ores are reviewed Commercial interest is presently centered on monazite from the Union of South Africa, and thorite from this country. Thorium became commercially important with the development of the incandescent gas mantle about 75 years ago, Gas mantles consist of thorium oxide with small amounts of cerium oxide. The thorium nitrate used to make gas mantles was first obtained from rare thorium minerals, As a matter of fact, this use of thorium is still important and is one of the largest commercial uses for thorium materials. The discovery of monazite sand placer deposits along the coasts of Travancore, India, and in some Brazilian beach s .s, and the development of the old North and South Carolina monazite stream placers gave the mantle industry of 30 to 40 years ago a comfortable inventory of thorium ore. Even today, the thorium industry depends largely upon monazite ores for its source of thorium. This paper will briefly describe some of the major thorium ores and their principal deposits insofar as they relate to the thorium industry in this country. Because of similar chemical and physical properties, thorium always occurs with the rare earth elements and with varying amounts of yttrium. Thorium may predominate over rare earths, as in thorite-type minerals, or may represent only a fraction of the rare earth content. Typical ratios of thorium to rare earths in various minerals are given in Table 1, The average thorium content of the earth's crust is about 12 grams per ton, and in this respect thorium approximates lead, molybdenum, and some of the rare earths in abundance. The ore minerals of greatest importance to the-thorium-rare earth industry are monazite, thorite-type minerals, bastnasite-type- ores, and the family of minerals which is characterized by a preponderance of the heavy rare earths and yttrium. The latter classification includes xenotime, gadolinite, samarskite, euxenite, etc, The first two, monazite and thorite, are of greatest significance.

The large volume of water used in coal preparation plants makes water recycling a necessity. Economical cleaning of dirty water usually requires flocculation with an efficient organic polyelectrolyte. This paper discusses identification of optimum flocculant systems. Supporting laboratory data with on-site tests and full scale field trials supplies information necessary for matching the polymer to the plant.

Improving upon the past understanding of the interaction between installed rock bolts, the immediate roof and sidewalls is vital for the implementation of sound support system design, as this has a direct impact on rock-related safety. This is the primary goal in rock-bolt-related research. The earliest research in this field concentrated on limited laboratory and in situ measurements accompanied by theoretical analyses, based on the Kirsch equations. This represented the initial insight into understanding relative ground movements and their impact on primary support. However, these studies were far from complete. More recently, major technological advances in computing power within the mining industry has changed the scope from theoretical analysis to computer simulation. Even with these advancements our understanding of rock bolts in situ and in the laboratory has not progressed, particularly concerning bending and shear. To measure the behavior of rock bolts, the widely accepted practice is to populate the bolts with an array of strain gauges. Historically, resistive foil strain gauges or long displacement sensors have been used. Additionally, all instrumented rock bolts have used only two diametrically opposed slots. Rock bolts instrumented with these methods have significant shortcomings, one of which is the inability to capture shear and bending. The shearing and bending of rock bolts are particularly common in tabular soft rock mining, such as coal mining. This paper discusses the use of three slotted rock bolts, cut diametrically 120º apart, and two new optical fiber technologies populated along the entire rock-bolt length.

"Longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique is one of the important methods for underground thick seam extraction in China. The coal seam in LTCC panel is divided into two parts: bottom-coal and top-coal. The bottom-coal is mined by conventional longwall method while the top-coal is mined by caving method. The top-coal caving process in LTCC and block caving process in metal mine are both gravity flow of loose ore/coal blocks. However, the presence of caving shield in LTCC makes the characteristics of drawing body shape in the two caving processes differ a lot. This paper discusses the influence of caving shields on the characteristics of drawing body shapes in light of recent studies of the top-coal drawing process. The theoretical model for describing the drawing body shape in LTCC is proposed both along the seam strike and seam inclination. Then, the experimental data are used to validate the correctness of the theoretical model. Furthermore, two examples of how the theoretical findings assist LTCC mining are given and discussed.INTRODUCTIONLongwall top-coal caving (LTCC) mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique have been widely used for extracting thick coal seams in China. About 0.6–0.7 billion metric tons of coal come from longwall top-coal caving panels every year. The maximum annual production is 15 million metric tons per panel _The mining method employed in such panel is a combination of top-coal caving mining technique and large-cutting-height mining technique, which is suitable for seam height between 12–20 m, as shown in Figure 1. Introduction An engineer is a builder and a problem solver. He uses knowledge of the properties of matter and energy to furnish the needs of society. Engineers form the bridge between scientific researchers and the general public, most of whom are technologically illiterate. Mining, metallurgical, and petroleum engineers extract minerals from the ground and process them into usable forms. Then, other engineers further process them into society's needs. Minerals engineers deal with more uncertainty than other engineers. Each ore deposit has its own personality and each ore is metallurgically unique. Minerals engineers, therefore, must be flexible, often applying larger safety factors and contingencies than other engineers, and frequently functioning as a jack of all trades. A minerals engineer can work in coal, oil, oil shale, base metals, ferrous metals, precious metals, industrial minerals, strategic minerals, or in exploration. Other mining jobs include banking and financing, education and research, marketing and sales, and government. As a minerals engineer, you may be among the first to work on the ocean floor or the moon. College Preparation A difference between college and industry is the type of problems to be solved. A typical college problem has an exact answer derived from given information. An industry problem is more apt to have a solution chosen from a number of alternatives. Information required for the solution is not given. It must be measured, calculated, looked-up, estimated, or otherwise derived. Solutions involve trade-offs, economics, and human factors, as well as application of physical laws and theory. When a college problem is answered, you move on to the next one. In industry, however, the headaches may just be starting with the implementation of the solution. Students often complain that they see little use for the theory they are learning. This is valid. A good professor will link theory and practice. Another difference between college and industry is the price of failure. In college, you can make a half-hearted effort in an assignment and take your C or D. On the job, however, poor engineering results in potentially effective projects being rejected and unsound projects being undertaken. Poor performance results in cost overruns, schedule holdups, oversights, disgruntled employees, irate bosses, unsafe structures, and unreliable systems. The costs are time, money, and possibly lives. The student pays the university for his work - not the other way around. So the rewards for good schoolwork often seem nebulous. But education must be viewed as an investment. Working for good grades will help you think better, learn more, receive better job offers, and perform more effectively on the job. There is no substitute for hard work. Avoid taking the easiest electives. If you desire a more liberal education or dislike rigorous physical sciences, mathematics, or engineering courses, change majors. Remember, you are training to be an engineer, not a computer programmer or market analyst. At least one summer of industry employment is necessary for minerals engineering students. The sooner you gain actual experience, the sooner you will know whether to change majors. Most large companies hire students during summer. It is best to send out applications around Christmas break. First and second year students usually work as laborers. Upper-classmen may work as engineering technicians. Students must sometimes choose between returning to a company at a higher position or trying a different company at a lower position, for more varied experience. Both alternatives have advantages. Do your best on these summer jobs. The company is watching. If you do well, the chances are good you will get a job offer when you graduate. Good references are important when you begin job hunting. Interviewing occurs near the end of your school career. The standard procedure is to send your resume with a cover letter to each company you are interested in. The resume for a graduating engineer with little experience need not exceed one page. The cover letter must be written for the individual company.

Once mining compromises the stability of a rock mass, the dangerous task of roof bolting begins. Many attempts have been made to automate this process, but there are still many refinements that need to be made. In the past, roof bolting modules were designed around the abilities of a human operator. Currently, researchers are taking a new approach that focuses on designing modules that can utilize bolting methods that are easily automated. A non-rotating anchor that is locked into position by a linear force (as opposed to a rotational force) was designed by researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Once the bolt is secured in the bolt-hole by the anchor, the bolt is tensioned and a collet is used to secure the other end of the bolt. This process replaces the traditional bolt-nut fastening method. This program is part of an effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to automate the coal mining process.

Now in the midst of a full-on cultural shift, they are also key players in the continual effort to re-examine and calibrate practices to meet dynamic and increasingly complex objectives.SME’s technical position statementAs a home for so many technical experts and practitioners, SME has long recognized the importance of a commitment to sustainable development by the mining and minerals industries. This report describes a computer program for the solution of material balances in complex mineral processing flowsheets. The program, which is entitled MBS Metallurgical Balance System), evolved as the culmination of a series of material balance programs whose development began in 1967 at the Institute of Mineral Research, Michigan Technological University. The need for such a program became evident when the Institute became heavily involved in a large number of short-term pilot plant projects. Calculating material flows from analytical data by means of the standard two-product formulas grew increasingly difficult and time-consuming as the complexity of the flowsheets increased and as choices between conflicting analytical values had to be made. It was recognized that what was needed was a program that would assimilate all of the available data and calculate mass flow rates so that steady-state inputs and outputs would balance at each point in the flowsheet. Such a program should be capable of handling underdetermined, overdetermined and mixed systems, and when the given data are inconsistent, the program should adjust the data in such a manner that the adjustments are minimized. Missing analyses should also be calculated whenever possible. In addition to solving material balances, the program should be convenient to use and print out the results in a useful form. Thus, the inputting of data should be simple enough to be handled by relatively untrained personnel with diagnostic messages being printed out to identify errors and anamolous data when they occur. Most importantly, the program should produce well-formatted output which can be directly included into a report without the necessity of retyping. The proper spacing of table titles, column headings and the ability to control the columns being printed are important features in this respect.

Increasingly, geologists use geostatistical methods to evaluate drilling programs. The complexity of the methods varies with the nature of the available sample information, the objective of the statistical analysis and the geologist's experience. Occasionally, estimating the average sample grade is all that is required. In other instances a semivariogram calculation may be considered. If sufficient data is available, the geologist may wish to estimate blocks or panels of complex shape, using the kriging method of evaluation. Historically, the use of geostatistics by geologists has been limited by a number of factors, most significant being the difficulty in accessing and using computer programs needed to complete the necessary studies. Geologists are often working in remote areas from which electronic communication is unreliable, if not impossible. Even when access to computer programs is technically possible, the costs incurred in accessing and using these programs are often considered prohibitive. In many instances using the programs requires an understanding of computer systems far beyond that which a field geologist can justifiably be interested in acquiring and maintaining.

Gypsum is the crystalline chemical compound CaS04?2H20. A close chemical relation - and frequently occurring with Gypsum ? is Anhydrite which is Cask. Gypsun has wide commercial use because relatively simple heat processing reduces it to Plaster of Paris. While Anhydrite can be converted to Gypsum and thence to Plaster of Paris, the procedure is not simple and is quite costly. Anhydrite, however does have use in the agricultural field and in the Portland Cement industry. Occurrence of Gypsum in the earth structure is usually near or at the surface. Most underground mining is at 60 to 100 feet although one mine in southwest Virginia reaches a depth of 1300 feet. Gypsum is one of our softest minerals, rating only 2.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Specific gravity is 2.3 to 2.4. It is soluble in water but only slightly so. Interestingly, it is more soluble in cold water than in hot. For example, one part Gypsum dissolves in 370 parts water at 106° Fahrenheit while at 212°F. the water requirement is 452 parts. Compressive strength of massive Gypsum runs about 3000 lbs. per square inch. Color ranges from grey and brownish-grey to white.

"Keep calm and carry on mining. That has long been the conventional wisdom in the mining industry, a largely cyclical one that has weathered roller-coaster booms and busts. But in the years from 2002 to 2016, an unprecedented steep rise in commodities prices that lasted a decade and then took a sharp turn downward had made it hard for gold and silver miners to stay the course.“The last 15 years highlighted some of the structural and inherent challenges that our industry has, from product price uncertainty to long lead times to the capital intensity of our business,” said Mitchell Krebs, president and chief executive officer of Coeur Mining, who was the luncheon speaker at the American Exploration & Mining Association’s 122nd Annual Meeting held Dec. 5-9, 2016, in Reno, NV.Looking back, Krebs said, “We were given this enormous gift of a commodities super cycle, and the industry kind of blew the opportunity.” While gold prices rose 319 percent and silver prices rose more than 200 percent over the 2002 to 2016 period, the XAU index of 30 gold and silver mining companies’ stock prices went up by only 20 percent.Entering 2016, precious-metals prices have made a comeback, with gold rallying strongly from a six-year low at the start of the year. This time, the industry is ready. Companies are leaner and meaner, with lower costs, reduced debt and an increased focus on higher grades and quality ounces. Although opportunities were missed in the past, the industry has got its act together and is now well positioned to take advantage of a price upswing and even to show profits when prices fall, as they did in August 2016, pushed down by a strong dollar."

The Folsom Area Stormwater Improvement Project is part of SFPUC’s flood resilience efforts under the Sewer System Improvement Program. This 4,000-foot-long, 12-footinside- diameter tunnel will help reduce the risk of flooding in San Francisco’s low-lying Inner Mission neighborhood. The project is in a high seismic hazard zone and extends through a complex geologic corridor that includes full-face soft, compressible Bay Mud, Colma Sands, and full-face rock with several stretches of mixed-face conditions. Additional challenges include removal of 99 piles beneath an existing box sewer, tunneling under commuter rail tracks, and an underground tie-in. This paper examines these challenges and how they are being addressed.

The LA Effluent Outfall tunnel is a 7-mile long, 18' internal diameter, secondary treated effluent discharge tunnel currently under construction by Dragados USA for the Los Angeles County Sanitation District No. 2 (LACSD). The purpose of this tunnel is to add redundancy and increased capacity for discharge of secondary treated effluent from the LACSD’s Joint Water Pollution Control Plant, located in Wilmington, California within Southern Los Angeles County. Current discharge from this facility flows through two existing tunnels of 8' and 12' horseshoe profile, constructed in 1937 and 1958, respectively. When the new tunnel is complete, it will add an additional capacity of 670MGD in peak wet weather flow conditions. Geology of the roughly 7 mile long tunnel was divided into six reaches by the contract documents. Tunnel Reaches (TR) 1 to 3, comprising 19,550' will be excavated in alluvial sands of the San Pedro and Lakewood formations, with cover ranging from 45 to 90 feet. In this reach the tunnel intersects the seismically active Palos Verdes fault Zone. TR 4 is a 1,600' transitional zone between alluvium and the rock formations of the Palos Verdes (PV) Hills, comprised mostly of Malaga Mudstone. TR’s 5 and 6 total 15,591', and are within the rock formations of the PV Hills with overburden ranging from 315' to 475'. The primary constituent of the PV Hills is Altamira

In 1977, an article in World Mining (1) reported a total of 2726 rotary blast hole drills in service. This figure included only those machines produced by three of the manufacturers building drills of this type. The total, therefore, is much higher: Rotary drilling in the mining industry is big business to the manufacturers and suppliers involved, and a significant cost item, to mine operators. The time has come to take a hard look at rotary drilling technology with an eye to re¬ducing costs by increasing drilling efficiency. The efficiency of any rotary drilling operation is measured in terms of the rate of penetration achieved by the bit. In blast hole drilling, five factors affect the rate of penetration. They are: 1. Bit selection 2. Weight on the bit 3. Rotary speed 4. Hole cleaning 5. Formation properties Of these factors, all but one may be control¬led by the operator. Looking at any one in detail may reveal possible improvements in the system. Cleaning the hole is a good place to start. In order for a bit to perform at its maximum capability, each tooth or insert should strike fresh, clean rock as it falls into its drilling position. If the tooth or insert lands on previously drilled cuttings, a major portion of the energy delivered to the bit is absorbed in re drilling this broken material. A major portion of the interest, therefore, should be directed to the proper cleaning of the bottom of the hole.

Bessac's presence in Singapore started in 2014 with the construction of the Thomson metro line, which includes 18 miles of twin-bore tunnels and 22 stations split into 17 construction packages. Bessac joint venture was allotted the T219 lot. The works include the construction of a new 660-foot (200-meter) long transfer station, two parallel 19-foot (5.8 m) ID tunnels and a pedestrian underpass. The urban context and the very soft ground stratum imposed to utilize unusual tunneling techniques, from upgrading a slurry TBM to a high-density slurry TBM to launch with very low cover and canopy pipe roofing completed with a MTBM without retrieval shaft.

The 86th Annual Meeting of the SME Minnesota section/74th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium partnered with the Canadian Institute of Mining Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM)?s Iron Ore Symposium for a historic joint conference, held this year in Duluth, MN, April 15- 17. One of a flurry of recent collaborations between SME and CIM, the joint conference was a natural fit for the conference held in the heart of the Iron Range. As CIM National President Terence Bowles said in his joint keynote with SME President Jessica Kogel, ?The U.S. imports $51 billion from Canada and Canada imports $38 billion the U.S.; that?s 50 percent of Canada?s exports and 51 percent of its imports.? The two countries? economies are linked, and nowhere more closely than in their iron ore mining activities. Kogel opened the conference with a plenary speech identifying the top 10 issues facing mining and how these issues present opportunities for mining companies. She said that it is important that the mining industry stay flexible and adapt to changing conditions, or it will go the way of the dinosaur. However, she said that these challenges can lead to new opportunities. For example, one of the major challenges facing mining is the current state of risk aversion among investors, which makes for ?less money in the pipeline.? However, this situation creates a better climate for mergers and acquisitions, which is another, less risky way to get funding. Likewise, another challenge globally is geopolitical risk; this challenge is likely to drive growth toward stable countries, which was good news for an audience composed mostly of Minnesota and Canadian mining industry personnel. One of the highlights of Kogel?s address was a triangle illustrating the interdependent nature of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility (Fig. 1). This triangle consists of four equal components: the social environment, transparency, local and global impact and future generations. The most important takeaway, Kogel said, was that sustainable development and environmental and social responsibility, while they do add to the cost of doing business, are no longer optional.

To protect the water supply for the Metropolitan Chicago area, the Illinois legislature, in 1889, created the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. To insure the quality of the water supply, the Sanitary District collected and diverted the wastes of 750,000 people away from Lake Michigan. Today, the Sanitary District collects and treats the wastes from a domestic population of 5 ¼ million people and an industrial waste load equivalent to 4 ¼ million people. The District serves Chicago and 120 other cities and suburbs in an 858 square mile area. An average of 1300 million gallons of wastewater is treated each day, producing as a by- product about 700 dry tons of solids which contains more than $10,000 worth of plant nutrients when equated to the value of commercial fertilizer purchased in the retail market. The Sanitary District considered several alternatives to past methods for disposing of these solids, and chose land application as a technique to utilize the solids produced by the wastewater treatment process in a beneficial manner.

The United States began exporting coal in the late 1800'5, at first in very small quantities to Canada and beginning in 1897 and 1896, to the east coast of South America. Shipments to European countries began on a very limited basis in 1902 and these shipments increased gradually until World War One when shipments overseas increased from the 8 million tons per year level to 22 million tons. After the war exports dropped as fast as they had increased and, with the exception of exports to Canada, remained at very low levels until just after World War 11 when the United States again emerged as a major coal exporter. World War II left the coal industries of Europe in ruin. As the United States was the only country able to supply the large quantities of coal at reasonable prices needed for reconstruction of the European economy, the U. S. coal exports overseas expanded rapidly to 42.5 million tons in 1947. Additionally, we shipped 25 -2 million tons of coal to Canada In that year for a total export of 68.7 million tons. Unfortunately, that level was not reached again until 1957 when exports reached an all-time high of 76 .4 million tons- -a high I might add that has not been reached since.

Traditionally, cost effective gains in the capacity of material handling systems were a result of increases in equipment size. In general, the use of maximum capacity components in a system optimizes the production "costs per ton." The trend-"Bigger is Better" will continue in material handling equipment. Since it is rare for plant operators to lament an over abundance of screening capacity, one can safely predict that vibrating screens will follow this trend. Large Vibrating Screens - The Challenge Large vibrating screens represent a unique challenge for Manufacturers, Plant Designers, and Plant Operators. The inherent mode of operation for vibrating screens is self-destructive. More often than Manufacturers admit, Designers plan for, or Operators staff for, a vibrating screen succeeds and self-destructs. This is a problem. It can magnify with larger vibrating screens.

Hydrometallurgical processes for copper flotation concentrates avoid the S02 emission problems associated with smelting, but they require oxidation of copper to obtain solubilization during leaching. The resulting copper ions must be reduced to metal, which normally requires large amounts of energy or energy equivalent reagents such as hydrogen or iron. The conventional reduction method is electrowinning which is labor intensive and involves 35 to 40% of both the en-tire operating and capital cost of the better hydrometallurgical processes. Smeltermen are correct in criticizing the available hydrometallurgical processes for being more energy intensive than modern smelting processes. Clearly, there is considerable incentive to reduce the cost and energy required for reducing copper ions from solution. Furthermore, it is thermodynamically possible to do this using sulfur contained in the concentrate itself. In fact, the thermodynamic potential of oxidizing sulfur from S+4 to the S+6 state is greater than required to reduce cupric ion to metallic copper. (1) Realization of this potential in a practical process would significantly reduce the cost of hydrometallurgical processing of sulfide concentrates because sulfur would become a cost-free reducing agent. An apparently practical method is to use SO3 and HSO3 ions, obtained by ammonia scrubbing of SO2 from a concentrate roaster gas, to reduce leached copper to metal in an autoclave. This reduction step is the Jumau 1907 patent. (2) A series of steps including sulfite reduction constituting a crude flowsheet was suggested by Parker in 1976(3), but apparently little development work has been done by him, since he has been interested in new routes of refining the resulting copper powder. The purposes of the present paper are to elaborate on the Jumau-Parker thrust. Describe a detailed complete sulfite process flowsheet based on materials and energy balances, discuss the chemistry, and discuss further work that is required to develop this process. The results of the present paper are largely based on a synthesis of the steps using handbook chemistry. Process materials, utilities costs, and energy requirements are projected to be unusually low.
