"Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR), a satellite-based remote sensing technique, has application for monitoring subsidence with high resolution over short periods. DInSAR uses radar images to measure centimeter-level surface displacements. In the images, ground resolution can be relatively high, with each data point (pixel) representing the average displacement over an area of several square meters. The image data are acquired regularly which allows subsidence to be monitored sequentially over short periods; imaging periods typically range from weeks to months.Monitoring subsidence over short periods with high spatial resolution has potential to provide insight into the dynamics of subsidence and into relationships between mine advance and subsidence. In this study, for three longwall mines in the western United States, initial subsidence occurring at the start of longwall advance is quantified over short periods (12 to 72 days). C-band interferometric wide swath Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images from the Sentinel satellites are used to quantify the subsidence. Overall, the data show initial development of subsidence, expansion of the subsidence trough, and the advance of subsidence in the direction of mining.INTRODUCTIONApplied Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR)Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) is a satellite-based remote sensing technique that can be used to quantify small displacements of the Earth’s surface. Using data from the Seasat satellite, which was launched in 1978 (Jet Propulsion Laboratory, 2018), studies by Goldstein, Zebker, and Werner (1988) and by Gabriel, Goldstein, and Zebker (1989) applied Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometry to topographic mapping and displacement monitoring. These studies established the potential for broader applications of radar interferometry. Studies by Foxall, Sweeney, and Walter (1998), Wright and Stow (1999), and Carnec and Delacourt (2000) represent some of the earliest evaluations of DInSAR for mine subsidence monitoring. All three of the studies demonstrated the application of DInSAR for quantifying mine subsidence. They also demonstrated difficulty accurately measuring subsidence over long periods due to data decorrelation. DInSAR continues to be evaluated as a tool to quantify surface deformation related to active and historic mining. For example, see Vervoort and Declercq (2018), Wempen and McCarter (2017a), Chen et al. (2013), and Liu et al. (2013). Technologies associated with SAR interferometry continue to develop. Recently launched satellites have relatively high spatial and temporal resolutions, and data processing methods and data accessibility are improving."

The ventilation of a bituminous coal mine by means t of a Forced and, or, Exhaust system of ventilation is certainly not new to the mining industry, however, we know from experience that the ventilation of every coal mine presents a variety of problems which are in some instances approached by different methods or means, As in every such problem, there is some difference of opinion as to the advantages and disadvantages of s Exhaust versus Forced ventilation, particularly with regard to safe and effective ventilation of an active pillar area in a gaseous coal mine. We at Island Creek, certainly concede that it is possible to safely ventilate a coal mine by means of Forced ventilation, However, following many years experience in operating a coal mine in an extremely gaseous coal seam, we prefer using an Exhaust system, that is, to reduce the inside mine pressure to a minus atmospheric pressure by means of a mechanically operated fan. This method assures that the return air moving through established airways toward the fan will continue to move in that same direction for a limited time should the fan stop for any reason, also assuring that in the event of a large area fall, the air from the abandoned workings will move directly to the suction side or to the return airways.

Two pilot scale bioreactors designed to treat acid mine drainage primarily using sulfate reducing bacteria were constructed underground at the Eagle Mine Superfund site in Minturn Colorado. The project was designed to test th applicability of microbiological treatment on water with high metals concentration and to test the process in an underground environment. Objectives were, 1) to compare metal removal, pH increase, and sulfate reduction in a single stage reactor with a double stage reactor of equal volume at varying flow rates; 2) to determine where within the substrate treatment occurs· and 3) to examine volume versus surface ara as a design parameter for optimizing metal removal processes. Results from the reactors showed that the single stage reactor and double stage reactor performed equally well for the removal of Cd, Cu, Pb, Fe, Mn, and Zn. pH increased above 6.5 in both reactors. Greater than 97% of metals were removed within the first ten inches of substrate. Volume proved to be a more useful parameter for determining removal rates than area. Using volume as a design parameter rather than surface area enables PMDT systems to be constructed as packed columns rather than broad wetlands, Thus, space requirements are significantly reduced.

There are two basic problems when one attempts to separate a solution of metal ions utilizing a chelation-solvent extraction cascade (commonly called liquid ion exchange). First, it is impossible to produce any great degree of separation unless the separation factor (also called selectivity, which is the ratio of the distribution coefficients) is very large. Second, the richest possible extracted product, using an infinite number of equilibrium stages, is at best only in equilibrium with the feed solution. These factors combined with equipment design considerations have led to a situation where only the most selective chelating agents are applicable to economic industrial operations. The authors know that distillation techniques are used routinely to separate compounds with nearly identical relative volatilities and that there should be a way of operating solvent extraction cascades in an analogous manner to obtain separations of metal ions. The advantage of this approach would be that solutions of metal ions of any desired purity could be obtained even if the separation factor was close to unity. This paper presents this idea and suggests some possible applications.

The abstract discusses the importance of predicting the dewatering performance of industrial hydrocyclones from laboratory models. It highlights the challenge of scaling up design and operating parameters for efficiency estimation. The paper describes experiments with a 2-inch and 4-inch hydrocyclone using silica sand. It details the development of a model using the Nageswararao hydrocyclone model and a simulator to estimate model parameters. The model is validated with experimental data, and a new model is developed using 4-inch hydrocyclone data. The technique is then extended to predict dimensions for a full-scale dewatering cyclone operating at higher throughput and solid concentration.

In the late 1980s and into the 1990s, the Mountain Pass Mine in California produced about 40 percent of the world?s rare earth elements. At the height of this production, the facility produced up to 54 L/s (850 gpm) of saltwater that was piped to offshore holding ponds where the water was evaporated. In 1998, following a series of waste water pipeline breaches, separations activities were suspended, reducing the Mountain Pass site to just the openpit mine and mill. The environmental concerns were addressed and the affected areas have since been remediated. However, in the years following the breaches, 97 percent of the world?s production of rare earth elements moved to China. By 2011, Molycorp, and the Mountain Pass Mine, had rebounded from the difficult times and were once again in a position to become a significant player in the rare earth industry.

Compared to the traditional method of holding coal in railroad cars at the ports for dumping their contents into vessels, it provided for: a. Wet kata cooling power (WKCP) measured using a kata thermometer is a well-known heat stress index in mining industries. Although over the years several researchers have proposed different heat indices and indicated the limitations of the kata thermometer, it is still being used in many areas, especially in the South African gold mining industry, mainly because of its simplicity and rapidity of assessment. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the newly developed empirical expression for WKCP, and some of the more prevalent empirical expressions. The analysis presented based on a regression technique aims to assess the disagreement between model predictions and actual measurements. It is found that the WKCP expresses bioclimatic interaction quite well under the specific parameter of interaction that explains the harsh thermal environment and air condition, such as metabolic activity, the person’s clothing, and the velocity of the air in which the person is working. The statistical analysis shows that the WKCP exhibits significant estimates to thermal stress under lower air velocities, light clothing, and higher metabolic activity rates.

Soda ash is produced in over 39 countries by the Solvay ammonia-soda process or by mining natural sodium carbonate deposits. The total production of soda ash in 1980 is estimated at slightly over 29 million metric tons. Synthetic production accounted for over 75% of this amount with the balance of production originating from natural sources (either trona or sodium carbonate-rich brines) found primarily in the United States, Mexico, Kenya, and Chad.

The system produces better operation control than existing algorithms. Application of shallow seismic reflection to problems associated with mineral exploration, mine planning, abandoned-mine detection, and environmental evaluation has been successful in a variety of geologic settings. Increased dynamic range of recording equipment and decreased cost of processing hardware and software have made shallow seismic reflection a cost-effective means of imaging geologic targets significant to mining operations. Seismic data possess sufficient resolution in many areas to detect faulting with displacement of less than 3 m in coal seams as thin as 2 m at depths of 200 m. Subsurface voids associated with abandoned mines at depths of less than 20 m can be detected and mapped. Seismic reflection has been successful mapping disturbed subsurface associated with dissolution mining of salt Complex geologic features associated with deposition of various hydrothermal minerals have been effectively mapped with high resolution seismic reflection at depths from 80 to over 300 m. Faults in sulfur-bearing cap rock over salt domes have been accurately located, allowing improved efficiency of the dissolution mining process. Shallow high-resolution seismic reflection has the potential to significantly enhance the economics and safety of mine operations.

The environmental liabilities of coal waste disposal sites can have a major impact on a mining project's economic viability. Developing a waste disposal site is no longer simply an exercise in completing paperwork to obtain a permit, with the proliferation of environmental regulations in recent years, managing disposal sites now requires design creativity, short term and long term planning and detailed monitoring to maximize the benefits to the mining company. Operating costs and future capital costs for expansion of existing sites, new site development and regulatory compliance should be reviewed periodically and considered in the overall management plan. This paper discusses various management methods that are being employed in the industry to improve waste disposal operations both environmentally and profitably.

Granite Construction Company operates a rock quarry in the rugged Santa Cruz Mountains of central California indicated in Figure 1. Open pit methods are used to mine decomposed granite which is processed to produce sand, gravel, decorative rock and asphalt. The quarry is located near the village of Felton about five miles inland from the coast of the Pacific Ocean, and is near the campus of the University of California at Santa Cruz and several California State Parks. The area is heavily forested and is considered by residents to be environmentally sensitive. Because of the scenic beauty of the area and proximity to the San Francisco Bay area, a project such as a quarry receives the attention of regional residents and environmental organizations.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to boost domestic production of manganese. Virtually no mining exists in the low grade and/or small deposits that occur in this Country. One large, low-grade manganese deposit located in westcentral Arizona--The Artillery Peak district--was extensively studied and sporadically mined during the 1940's and 1950's. Although manganese mining in the district has been long dormant, recent studies indicate that the deposits may be amenable to economical production by heap and/or in situ leaching methods. A conceptual design for an in situ leaching system features undercutting and blasting a block of ore, leaching with SO2, and extracting the manganese as a sulfate or oxide. Possible applications to other manganese deposits depend upon formation permeability and specific manganese mineralogy.

The extraction behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions in the presence of bromine as an oxidant has been studied. The effect of concentration of ammonia, bromine, and pH of the solution on the rate of dissolution of gold was investigated. The dissolution behavior has been analyzed using electrochemical method, and its results were compared with direct leaching tests using gold powder. The overall dissolution of gold in ammoniacal solution containing bromine was found be affected significantly by pH of the solution and the concentration of bromine. Underground openings resulting from coal mining activities have been a serious cause of subsidence problems in the Warrior coalfield of Alabama, which is the 11th largest coal-producing state in the United States (National Coal Association, 1986). The problem will be even more serious in the future because 17 Gt (19 billion st) of Alabama's 22 Gt (24 billion st) of coal reserves are classified as an under- ground resource (Tolson et al., 1982). Subsidence data in this area has been scarce com- pared with other coalfields (Conroy, 1980; Dunrud and Osterwald, 1980; Gentry and Able, 1978; Hunt, 1979; King and Gentry, 1979). This paper discusses the results of a study of subsidence overlying two longwall mines that contrast each other. One of them (Mine #1) is a shallow longwall mine where the coal strength is very high, and the other mine (Mine #2) is extremely deep with a low strength of coal.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has tried many regional and laboratory efforts to develop measurement and monitoring techniques using environmental remote sensing technologies. In 1997, the agency established the Advanced Measurement Initiative (AMI): This is a eadquarters-level program, operating under the auspices of the EPA Office of Research and Development. The program is one result of the April 30,1996 White House Conference on Advanced Monitoring of the Environment. The EPA was encouraged to work with other federal agencies to leverage its remote sensing capabilities and use them to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness and flexibility of environmental measurement and monitoring for regulatory compliance and reinvention. During the fall of 1996, the EPA and the Department of Energy developed an interagency effort to broaden the use of governmental technologies for environmental measurement and monitoring. In addition, the EPA and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) conducted joint workshops on the use of NASA remote sensing and other technologies for water quality and pollution applications. In the meantime, the EPA proceeded with an industry-proposed workshop to explore ways to cooperatively examine new research and to develop commercial remote sensing systems. It also examined how these systems might become accepted by the EPA in the regulatory and compliance processes. In particular, industry was interested in where new remote sensing capabilities might fit in with EPA's efforts at regulatory reinvention. Historically, the mining and petroleum industries have been reluctant to experiment with or use environmental remote sensing. They were concerned with the unknown liability from potential discovery of previously unknown environmental problems. Moreover, resource industries have been reluctant to use remote sensing for environmental applications where the EPA did not accept such data or information as part of the compliance process. Acceptance by the EPA of these advanced measurement and monitoring technologies (AMMT) will be a major reason for industry's increasedd use of remote sensing in environmental "applications for regulatory compliance. In July 1997, the EPA Office of Research and Development hosted at the Colorado School of Mines a stakeholders workshop on the AMI program and industry-government collaboration. The workshop's aim was to demonstrate the usefulness of AMMT technologies for environmental applications. Stakeholders included the mining and petroleum industries; environmental services companies; state environmental agencies and local governments; remote-sensing, value-added companies and data suppliers. The workshop used specific technologies and applications as a way to develop collaborative demonstration projects for several AMMT technologies covering different environmental problems. The workshop focused on the use of highly sensitive hyperspectral (very narrow spectral bands), geographic information systems and surface mapping to identify active acid-producing mine dumps and wastes from benign wastes at Leadville, CO. NASA's advance infrared imaging spectrometer (AVIRIS) was the instrument used. It was developed at California Technology's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The EPA, the US Bureau of Land Managment (BLM), the US Geological Survey and several environmental service contractors sponsored the overflight and data evaluation. The AVIRIS study demonstrated reliability (95% correct surface mineral identification) and cost-effectiveness of this technology to accurately map and discriminate active acid-producing mine wastes from benign wastes. It could also predict which streams would be effected by acid and toxic mineral drainage. The BLM'said that the AVIRIS overflight could save it $500,000 a year in surface sampling costs at Leadville. The AMI workshop further outlined five 1997 funded AMI projects of potential interest to the mining industry. They were: ? This paper presents considerations in support of a U. S. oil import policy more restrictive than the present Government import program. A lower level of imports and greater long-range stability in the relationship between imports and domestic production are recommended. Reference is made to increasing world-wide surpluses of oil and wide disparities in foreign vs. domestic costs. Resulting economic forces are held responsible for the increase in imports (excluding residual fuel oil) of almost 300 percent and the change in ratio to domestic crude production from 5.4 percent to 13.9 percent during the period 1946-1956 prior to import restrictions. It is pointed out that these imports continued to increase during the years of import restrictions to a ratio of 17.3 percent of domestic production in 1961. Data are presented showing that increasing oil markets outside the United States provide an outlet' for more than 80 percent of total foreign production, with 90 percent of the increase in foreign production going to foreign markets. Attention is called to the fact that, if there had been no increase in United States oil imports during the past five years, foreign production would have increased by 45 percent in contrast to a static level of domestic crude oil production. The need for a less restrictive import policy in the interest of encouraging foreign oil development, therefore, is questioned. Declines since 1956 in the range of 30 percent in domestic exploratory crews, rotary rig activity and wildcat well completions in the United States are cited, together with a decrease of 9 percent in industry employment and increases of 9 to 18 percent in elements of cost. Recognizing that factors other than imports affect the domestic industry, it is concluded that continuing declines in the vigor, capabilities and competitive structure of the domestic industry can be expected unless further import restrictions are imposed. The public interest in assuring adequate domestic supplies is considered in the light of the role of oil and gas as a source of almost three-fourths of U. S. energy requirements and the economic benefits from petroleum production with a value exceeding the combined value of all other minerals in the United States.

"The times they are a changing, and, for the mining industry, the optimism is high. On Nov. 8, Donald Trump was elected as the 45th president of the United States, and the Republican Party won a majority of seats in the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, ushering in what many hope will be a positive change for the mining and extractive minerals industries.Trump has stated that one of his top priorities as president will be to increase spending on the nation’s infrastructure, which could help spark a boom for mining. He has also pledged to bring back coal jobs and reverse many of the environmental regulations that were put in place by the Obama administration. However, before the mining industry gets too far ahead of itself and plans for another Super Cycle, there are stark reminders that any work in the natural resources sector is complicated and challenging. On Dec. 4, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that it would not grant an easement that would allow the Dakota Access Pipeline to pass under a portion of the Missouri River in North Dakota. The proposed crossing of the oil pipeline is approximately a half a mile upstream from the Standing Rock Sioux’s Reservation, and for months, hundreds of protestors camped out at the site in an effort to halt the project, saying they feared how it would impact water supplies and sacred lands.Energy Transfer Partners, the company building the pipeline, said the pipeline is a $3.78-billion investment that will connect the Bakken and Three Forks production areas to major refining markets. The company signed voluntary easement agreements with landowners representing more than 85 percent of the properties along the four-state route but faced an organized protest from the Sioux Nation at Standing Rock. The protest gathered momentum and support through social and traditional media and became the focal point of global environmental and indigenous activism. The protestors claimed victory, at least temporarily, when the Corps of Engineers said it would look for alternative routes for the project. It’s a decision that could lead to a lengthy environmental review and one that has the potential to block the construction of the pipeline for months or even years."
