Analysis of the energy resources available in the United States confirms that coal will be needed to satisfy the future energy needs. The trends in the market place, particularly economic and political, suggest that the bulk of the coal will be consumed for generation of electricity. The utilization of coal to produce electricity will require technical solutions to the variable characteristics of coal and ash, development of methods to improve coal quality, and public acceptance of the cost of compliance with environmental standards.

A critical component of implementing autonomous systems is the ability to use information from a robust sensory and information system to make sound, predictable, and repeatable decisions to assure safety. This means that any such system would need to evaluate what objects (people, equipment, boulders, etc.) of interest exist in that environment (with relevant data about identity, trajectory, characteristics, etc.), project a future continuum of those objects (including considerations for variabilities), and make control intervention choices to minimize risk due to exposures in the present operational area. The components of an overall system would include: a) sensor and data fusion, b) probability projection of future states, c) generation and evaluation of alternate futures, and d) implementation of best course of action to reduce risk. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is studying this framework for applications for autonomous mining equipment. This paper focuses on using information from the sensor fusion engine to generate a continuous projection of future and alternate states (b and c above) incorporating the factors of confidence, accuracy, tolerance, and other variabilities. We refer to this as Machine Situational Awareness (MSA).

The Saskatchewan industry has the advantages of an ore body of a size and consistency unmatched anywhere else in the world, and large, efficient mines with production costs that compare favourably with those in other countries. On the minus side, Saskatchewan is remote from most major markets, and producers face a distribution challenge to reach the offshore markets which is the main focus of this presentation. One of the characteristics of the world potash business is that all of the major sources of production are located in the developed areas of the world, while there is no significant production in any of the highly populated developing countries. The major potash producers are located in Canada and the United States, in West Germany, France, Spain and the U.K., in Russia and East Germany, and in Israel and Jordan. There is currently no significant production in any of the countries in Asia (with the exception of Jordan where a plant is currently in the start-up phase), Africa, Latin America or Oceania, and all of these areas must, therefore, import a11 of their potash requirements from the producing countries.

The environmental impact assessment (EIA) is the accepted method for evaluating proposed mining and other industrial projects to obtain regulatory approval and to help companies plan for responsible development. Another increasingly common evaluation system for proposed projects is the environmental, social and health impact assessment (ESHIA). An ESHIA differs from an EIA for its generally more comprehensive and inclusive approach to evaluating potential impacts, such as on public health, and other features such as an ecosystem services approach to assessing biophysical and community impacts. An ESHIA may also be required by certain lenders for financing major projects. In this paper, EIA standards for the province of Alberta, Canada are discussed and compared to ESHIA. It concludes with several recommendations for consideration.

The current process is dangerous and subjective, relying on human operators near the cutting interface. This paper summarizes the results of the development of a Directory of Computer Programs Applicable to U.S. Mining Practices and Problems. The Directory is funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and includes a sampling of computer usage in operating and manufacturing companies, consulting firms, computer companies, research organizations, universities, and various U.S. government agencies. General references to computer applications throughout the mining industry are discussed as well as the availability of programs to interested organizations or individuals.

Frozen soil shoring has been used for decades in the tunneling industry to provide temporary support of excavation for shafts and cross-passage excavations. However, horizontal penetrations through the frozen soil can prove to be challenging. The key to creating a stable portal through frozen ground is managing and mitigating groundwater flow into the excavation through the annular space surrounding the drill stem or casing. This paper will review different approaches that have been successfully used to penetrate frozen soil shoring on multiple projects.

"Mine monitoring through various sensors is a vital component of successful miner safety and health programs. Data from environmental, geotechnical, infrastructure, and other types of sensors are increasingly being used to discover and mitigate health and safety concerns in underground mines. In many smaller underground mines, as well as in new development headings of larger underground mines, leaky feeder communication systems may be the only available means to transport crucial monitoring data. In addition, data transport is increasingly being delivered using Internet Protocol (IP) while older forms of serial communication are being retired. This paper presents the selection, configuration, and testing methodologies that were employed by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to integrate commercially available land mobile data radios into an existing leaky feeder communication system to provide Internet Protocol data transport. INTRODUCTION To enhance the health and safety of their mining workforce, mine owners and operators are increasingly installing environmental monitoring and control systems in underground mines. Real-time, mine-wide monitoring is becoming a reality with the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) into the underground mining industry [1]. However, not all underground mines, especially smaller mines and new development headings in larger mines, have the information technology (IT) infrastructure in place to handle the data transport requirements for the newer IP-based technologies that are part of IIoT. This was the case with a mine in the Western United States; it lacked the infrastructure to perform critical monitoring in remote headings. The mine partnered with the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH’s) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) to develop and evaluate a cost-effective solution for real-time monitoring of geotechnical conditions in relatively remote sections of the mine. This paper describes SMRD’s solution to leverage the mine’s existing leaky feeder system to achieve IP data transport using commercially available land mobile data radios. DATA RADIO SELECTION The primary selection criteria for the data radios were network data format, modulation type, and radio channel spacing. The network data format decided upon was Internet Protocol. This format allowed for straightforward integration between the IP-enabled data acquisition system located in a remote heading and the network switch located in the control room. It also eliminated the added complexity of additional network hardware such as Ethernet to Serial converters. IP additionally provided a direct path to integration into higher bandwidth networks, such as fiber optic, should they become available."

Although industrial size reduction methods have an energy efficiency of only about 1 percent, methods of size reduction have not changed much for many years. One reason for slow progress has been the oversimple viewpoint that a single law should exist to relate size reduction to energy input. Modern simulation methods decompose the grinding process into a grinding rate function (selection function) and a breakage function. The breakage function is difficult to measure, and it usually requires tracers if it is determined from milling experiments. Prediction of breakage functions from basic principles is one objective of this paper. In this study we focus attention not on the gross energy input to the experiment, but on the spatial distribution of stress energy within the particle. We are led to this viewpoint by experimental observations of a few previous investigators (Bergstrom2, Rumpf3, Axelson4) and our own observations. Oka and Hiramatsu recently used their calculations of stress within particles for prediction of breakage, but again they tried to correlate the size of the fragments with the total stress energy, rather than the approach we propose. We assume that the stress energy is stored in the interior of the particle as the load is increased, until the particle breaks. We assume that each element of the particle breaks into fragments of a mean size that depends on the locally-stored stress energy. "It is not surprising that the most popular key takeaway from the Developing Diversity in Mining workshop (see box) held on the first day of the SME Arizona Conference in December was, “Have more parties!”The adage that mining professionals work hard and play hard was clearly demonstrated at the two-day conference in the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa in Tucson, AZ. Nearly 550 participants, some of whom had left behind frigid temperatures and thick parkas in their hometowns, attended a full slate of technical sessions, shared industry experiences and knowledge, reconnected with buddies in the industry, and made strategic new contacts in the conference’s collegial environment, aided by the mild Arizona winter.To start off the technical sessions, John Mansanti, president and chief executive officer of Crystal Peak Minerals and 2017 SME president, entertained a packed lecture room with his keynote lecture on “Tariffs, Embargos, and Cartels ... Oh My! A Perspective on Potash.” Mansanti gave the audience the benefit of his more than 35 years of experience at companies including Barrick Gold, Newmont Mining Corp., Placer Dome, Freeport-McMoRan and Intrepid Potash, where he was senior vice president for operations, technology and strategy. At the luncheon, Justin Cross, general manager of Freeport-Mc- MoRan’s Bagdad operations, spoke on how the role of a leader in mining is transforming from one based on technical expertise to one based on the ability to collaborate, to lead and to adapt to changes in technologies and skill sets, in his talk on “Knowing When to Learn, When to Lead and When to Manage.”"

Tunnels and underground infrastructures assets, like all assets, deteriorate with time. At some point, they reach the end of their useful life. Therefore, frequent inspections, higher levels of maintenance, and rehabilitation are needed to address loss of life and safety concerns. The repair cost of tunnels will increase if maintenance of tunnels is not satisfactory and timely. Historically, tunnel inspections have primarily relied on visual and manual procedures. Due to their time-consuming nature and susceptibility to human error, there is a demand for alternative automated techniques that can enhance efficiency and reliability in tunnel inspection. By utilizing a tunnel scanning system, such as laser scanner and thermography, or photogrammetry system, tunnel inspection cost, time, and personnel can be reduced. The goal of this study is to utilize deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for automated identification of defects in tunnel lining inspection. This paper presents a framework to classify two types of defects in tunnel lining (water leakages and cracks) using CNNs. The CNNs were trained and tested using 4,608 images. The Precision, Recall, and F1 Score were each 99.6%, confirming the viability of this approach in the automated defect identification in tunnel lining.

Last year in the US alone, about 425 Mt (468 million st) of minerals and coal were beneficiated by froth flotation. This number indicates that from 1983 there was a 10% increase in tonnage of min¬erals and coal beneficiated by the indus¬try. A significant improvement was seen in the tonnage processed by the nonferrous minerals and coal industries. BP Minerals America installed 85 m; (3000 cu ft) flotation cells at the Bing¬ham Canyon mine and concentrator. The new flotation circuit has fewer than 100 cells compared to 2000 flotation cells used in the old plant (Mining Engi¬neering, November 1988). Column flotation use on a commer¬cial scale continues to expand as seen from the interest expressed at the Col¬umn Flotation Symposium (Column Flotation '88). The Magma Copper Co., San Manuel Division replaced all con¬ventional cells with 1.8 x 12 m (6 x 40 ft) column flotation cells for copper con¬centrate cleaning. Also, 1220 mm and 760 mm-diam (48 in. and 30 in.-diam) column cells are operating at the plant in the molybdenum circuit. A commercial Diester Flotaire col¬umn cell for fine coal recovery was installed at the United Coal Wellmore No. 20 plant. The 36.8 m3 (1300 cu ft) cell recovers 13.6 to 18 t/h (15 to 20 stph) of -590 gm (-28 mesh) coal. A similar unit has been installed at Tanoma Mining Co. in Pennsylvania. Various modifications of the column cells are being designed around the world. Jameson (Mining and Metal¬lurgy, 1988) described a new concept whereby the feed and air stream mixture is discharged into a cylindrical column of about 1.2 m (4 ft) height. Recovery and grade of nonferrous minerals have been reported to be better than that in a four-stage conventional flotation clean¬ing circuit. Flotation reagents American Cyanamid and Dow Chemical continued development of a new generation of sulfide collectors. A general feeling is development of new sulfide collectors has not kept up with flotation technology. Additionally, joint efforts between industry and chemical suppliers will likely be necessary to realize the economic benefits of the new technologies, since new chemistries respond differently compared to the conventional collectors. Flocculant development in recent years has been evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Rothenborg reported on development of a new flocculant family (a hydroxymated polyacrylamide desig¬nated S-6703) that has shown consider¬able promise in red mud clarification. Plant testing showed that this new floc¬culant could replace starch and poly¬acrylate and provide significantly higher overflow clarity. Barol Kami (Siirak) and Cleveland¬Cliffs (Hancock) reported development of an amphoteric apatite collector (ATRAC 873) that was used in Tilden's silica flotation process to increase apatite rejection. The collector was engineered for the particular flotation conditions in the complex Tilden process. Significant plant testing with ATRAC 873 showed that this reagent gave significantly in¬creased apatite rejection without any effect on silica flotation effectiveness or selectivity. Electrostatic separation Electrostatic separation is now em¬ployed in the precious metals mining industry to recover gold and silver grills from crushed slag. The installation at Paradise Peak has prompted other op¬erators to consider this application. In another development, attractive potentials for treating very fine minerals (-45 µm or -325 mesh) are being devel¬oped by Advanced Energy Dynamics and by the Department of Energy. Demonstration tests using triboelectric charging/electrostatic separation have been successful on a variety of minerals as well as coal. Magnetic separation Developments in magnetic separa¬tion have transpired on a production scale. Superconducting, high gradient magnetic separation has gained accep¬tance with the successful startup of a second unit treating kaolin at J.M. Huber Corp. This liquid-helium-cooled mag¬net generates 2.0 tesla in a 3-m-diam (120-in.-diam) bore with no power con¬sumption. Wet, high-intensity magnetic separation has been applied to sulfide mineral separations both domestically and abroad. These continuous type of separators are effective in removing residual chalcopyrite and sphalerite from other base metal sulfide concentrates. Separators using high energy rare earth permanent magnets are continu¬ally increasing. Now offered as both drum and roll type, these units are be¬coming a staple in the processing of industrial minerals. Tests using rare earth magnets strategically placed on a spiral concentrator have demonstrated the enhanced recovery of heavy miner¬als such as ilmenite. Classification Although no major technology break¬throughs in classification appear immi¬nent, there is an increasing need for more efficient and cost-effective meth¬ods to make size separations. An investigation is made into the applicability of queueing theory to simulating the operation of a large open pit copper mine in the southwestern United States. Actual data from a working mine was used to construct curves for truck loading time, haulage and return time, and dumping times. Known results of investigations of queueing models (Koenigsberg - 1958, Gordon and Newell - 1967, Cabera and Maher - 1973) were used to simulate the actual operation. These did not give acceptable results so commonly used probability distributions were fitted to the actual data. A large computer program known as Q-GERT was used with the various parameters obtained from fitting the curves. Kolmogorov- Smirnov tests were run that showed that this was not satisfactory either. Finally, Q-GERT was used with the actual data from the mine. An appropriate correction factor is then found to apply to the exponential probability distributions tested previously and satisfactory results are obtained.

"Although global mineral resources are considered to be adequate to meet the needs of a rapidly growing world population, the United States is becoming increasingly dependent on imports. This could have implications for both the economy and national security. The US is a country with a strong tradition of leadership in science and technology. Impressive advances in autonomous underground mining systems reduce the adverse effects of heat and humidity in deep mines and focus renewed attention on ground control. Developments in computing power open opportunities to develop improved understanding of the important role of discontinuities (faults and fracture systems) and more effective design of deep excavations. Establishment of mining R&D Centers at leading US research universities, jointly funded by industry and US federal agencies is recommended as an effective step for the nation to remain an influential partner in world mining. INTRODUCTION. “None of the arts is older than agriculture, but that of metals is no less ancient.. . for no mortal man ever tilled a field without implements. If we remove metals from the service of man, all methods of protecting and sustaining health and more carefully preserving the course of life are done away with.” Agricola (1558)i Homo sapiens, generally acknowledged as the species from which modern Man has evolved, is considered to have originated in Swaziland some 100,000-200,000 years ago. Evidence of use of minerals in that region has been dated to earlier than 40,000 BC.ii Today, a large fraction of the elements of the Periodic Table are derived from minerals, and finding new applications in development of innovative technologies. Agricola’s comments are as applicable today as ever.iii Metals such as copper, tin, lead, iron and aluminum were mined and smelted several thousands of years BC. It was not until the Industrial Revolution, started in the latter half of the 17th Century in Northern England, where coal was available as an energy source, and iron as the basis for fabricating machinery, that dramatic change to society began to occur. Human toil was replaced by far more powerful machines. Rural communities migrated to work in factories in urban areas. Rapid transportation over long distances became possible, leading eventually to the world of today. The change spread to other parts of the world, bringing wealth and power. Although now well established in some regions, the Revolution has still to arrive in many other parts of the world. This can be seen in Figure 1, which shows the relative wealth, or ‘Standard of Living’ as measured by the GDP/capita, of regions around the world. Regions such as North America, Europe, and Australasia iv are seen to have the highest standard. Thanks to today’s global communications systems, regions with relatively low GDP/capita are well aware of ‘how others live’ – and eager to emulate them."

The earliest recorded history in the use of belt conveyors in the United States is in O. Evans' "Miller's Guide" published in Philadelphia in 1795. Evans defines a conveyor as a "broad endless strap of thin pliant leather or canvas revolving over two pulleys in a case or trough." (Ref. 1) In this definition, pulleys are being used in a bulk material belt conveyor application. Pulleys used in belt drives can trace their origin back to 1200 A.D. In fact, Engineers had considerable experience designing them into drives transmitting greater horsepower than those used in the early belt conveyors. In belt conveyor application, a pulley's purpose is primarily three-fold, 1) support the belt in directional changes, as designed in the conveyor, 2) transmit driving power to the belt, and 3) guide or train the belt. There are various types of pulleys used in belt conveyor systems and these are thoroughly covered in "Belt Conveyors For Bulk Materials" prepared by CEMA, 1966. For our discussion, however, the most common used in belt conveyors are drive pulleys, snub pulleys, head pulleys, tail pulleys, takeup pulleys and bend pulleys. The drive pulley imparts the driving force to the belt and may be located at the head or discharge end of the conveyor, in return strand, or at the tailor loading end of the conveyor. "Point cloud technology is now an indispensable tool in geological and geotechnical data collection, interpretation and analysis. Open pit and underground mines of all sizes are regularly collecting point cloud data as Laser Scanning (LiDAR) and Photogrammetry surveying devices have finally become affordable and the workflows fast and efficient. Past challenges of large data processing and manipulation are gone with recent technological advancements in computer hardware and software. These innovations reduce file sizes, ease rendering requirements and allow for the implementation of real-time 3D viewers and surface meshing tools. With its ability to remotely (safely), rapidly and accurately extract large quantities of georeferenced and 3D-oriented data, point cloud technology provides numerous applications to the geomechanical field. The list of uses is continuously growing, so this paper specifically focuses on digital outcrop modeling and digital terrain engineering. INTRODUCTION Point Clouds The high-resolution and increasing availability of point cloud technology is rapidly improving open pit and underground mines’ investigation, interpretation and characterization of site geology and rock mass properties (Kemeny et al., 2015; Lyons-Baral, 2012). LiDAR and photogrammetry are common remote sensing methods employed to measure the coordinates of surfaces in three dimensions (3D), providing the X, Y and Z locations, and typically the reflective intensity and/or the visible three-band color of each point (Figure 1). LiDAR uses either a time-of-flight or phase-shift measurement of a laser beam reflected off targeted surfaces and received back into the device. Photogrammetry generates point clouds by merging multiple overlapping photographs and uses stereographic plotting to define the locations of object points in 3-D space. These methods can be deployed from airplanes, unpiloted aerial systems (UAS or drones), tripods, land vehicles, and even in a mobile backpack shown in Figure 2. RADAR, Total Station-Prism and other remote sensing systems also offer very precise “point clouds”, but this paper does not address these due to their higher cost and lower versatility and mobility. Technology In the past few years point cloud acquisition device prices have dropped significantly, devices have become lighter, smaller and easier to operate, and processing and utilizing the data has also become faster and easier. Device size improvements include mobile backpacks (Figure 2) and handheld mobile LiDAR (CISRO, 2014), allowing mobile scanning in tight spaces both above and below ground or inside and outside of man-made structures. Airborne data acquisition options have expanded dramatically with the spread of UAS technology as seen in Figure 3 (Hexagon Geosystems, 2015). Once UAS usage regulations are sorted out, these versatile machines will be everywhere, offering high resolution coordinate scans, imagery and other remote sensing. While backpacks and handhelds allow access to tight quarters, UAS permit rapid data capture from narrow to broad areas with multiple perspectives reducing data “shadows.”"

Introduction In the decades since silica gel was first identified in material exuding from cracked concrete, a great deal of research has been conducted regarding the chemical reactions between the alkalies found in portland cement and silica found in aggregates. The reaction is complex and one that is not yet completely predictable, especially from the point of view of developing specifications that are appropriate to all situations. This paper is not intended to be a rigorous review of the research findings but is an attempt to provide a simplified review of the mechanisms of the alkali-silica reaction (ASR), so that one can better understand the implications of the specifications, test results and effects on structures. In addition, the contractual relationships between the aggregate supplier and one of their major clients, the concrete supplier, will be examined with regard to the ASR. ASR basics Silica. Silica (silicon oxide) may exist in naturally occurring aggregates in various forms and in combination with a number of other elements. When the silica is completely crystalline, such as in quartz, it is chemically and mechanically stable. Quartz silica is impermeable and reacts only on the surface of the crystal, where the silicon and oxygen bonds are broken. Because the surface area per unit volume of most quartz is low, the reactivity is also low. Completely amorphous (noncrystalline) silica is, on the other hand, more porous and very reactive. The less "crystalline" the silica is in the aggregate, the more reactive. Silica that has melted and cooled quickly without recrystallizing, creating a glassy material (such as in certain volcanic aggregates), has a very low state of crystallization and will be much more reactive in an alkaline solution. Crystalline silica that has been transformed by heat and pressure may have a large quantity of strain energy stored in the crystal lattice. The presence of this higher energy will make the silica more likely to react. The "strained quartz" found in many metamorphic aggregates means that these aggregates are potentially susceptible to deleterious alkali silica reactivity, although the rate of reaction is typically much slower than with aggregates composed of or containing glassy or amorphous silicas. Another problem may exist with aggregates in which the silica is primarily crystalline. In aggregates such as chert, in which the silica exists as very fine crystals (i.e., crypto- or microcrystalline), the very high surface energies between the crystals contribute to alkali sensitivity. Therefore, the potential reactivity of an aggregate is seen to be a function of both the degree of crystallization of the silica in the aggregate and the amount of energy stored in the crystal structure, whether due to a large quantity of microcrystalline silica, a high strain energy stored in the crystals or some combination of these factors. The surface area per unit volume of the reactive silica will also affect the rate of reaction, because a larger surface area of reactive silica will have more opportunity to react. Obviously, the reactivity of the aggregate is also affected by the silica content. However, in this case, the results are not quite so obvious. A discussion of the effect of silica content will be postponed until after a discussion of the contribution of the cement paste. Paste characteristics. Hydrated portland cement is a very alkaline material with a pore solution pH typically in excess of 12. The alkaline environment of moist concrete provides an ideal place for noncrystalline or cryptocrystalline silica to react. However, not all alkalies are equal in their effects. Calcium compounds react with glassy silica to form calcium silicate hydrate, commonly abbreviated C-S-H a poorly crystalline material that can occur in several forms and chemical compositions. C-S-H was at one time called tobermorite gel, because it was chemically similar to the naturally occurring crystalline mineral tobermorite and because it had a gel-like (noncrystalline) structure when viewed under an optical microscope. The formation of C-S-H is the basis for both portland cement hydration and reaction with, for example, fly ash. C-S-H is relatively stable. Although drying will cause some shrinkage and rewetting will cause some expansion, the volume stability of the C-S-H is very good compared to the volume stability of most alkali silica gels. Alkali silica gels with high sodium contents, for example, are nonstable compared to C-S-H.

Flow models are used to predict the extraction efficiency of metals in rock piles. These models typically use hydraulic parameters obtained through column studies, which assume that the material in the column wholly represents the entire pile and the parameters can be upscaled several orders of magnitude for model evaluation. This assumption fails for parameters that are spatially variable or scale dependent. To overcome these issues, measurements made directly on the heap at the appropriate model scale can be made with the electrical resistivity method. The method aims to map the variations in the electrical resistivity, which can be associated with moisture content, degree of fines, metal content, and leachate concentration. We present an example of calibrating the resistivity with borehole measurements of moisture using geostatistics to show how the resistivity method can be used to obtain a spatial moisture distribution. It was shown that cokriging the resistivity and moisture together gives a more reliable distribution.

The Highland Uranium Operations of Exxon Company, U.S.A. is a large uranium mining and processing complex situated in the Powder River Basin of East-central Wyoming. Surface mining and chemical processing of a large relatively low-grade ore body began in late 1972. An underground mine was later developed and began production in November of 1977. Figure 1 shows the location of our operations. During the planning stages of the project, it was recognized that hiring and retaining quality employees would be a significant problem. Other operations in similarly isolated locations were experiencing high turnover rates and were forced to employ inexperienced and poorly trained operators. In an attempt to attract employees, many of the companies provided mobile home or bunk- house facilities, but these costly peripheral ventures did not prove to be noticeably successful.
