Macintosh use in mine-planning applications lags DOS machines since many users have made significant investments in hardware and training for other environments. Macintosh use is becoming more pronounced in many other industries, and com soft-ware is of at least the quality of that available for DOS machines and many workstations. This paper describes attributes of the Macintosh computer family as related to many mine-planning problems and solutions including software, memory considerations, workstations, DOS compatibility, and networking.

Flowsheet flexibility in new 750 TPH coal cleaning plant provides three unusual capabilities. Two compartment drum coarse H.M. washer can be adapted to provide two stage separation. Coarse section of plant can be operated without fine section when washing surface mined coal. Fine section can operate with flotation cells bypassed if strip coal oxidation kills the froth. Plant can be fed by belt from bulk storage, front end loader from storage piles and truck from the mines. Raw coal and each of four washed products can be fed by belts to three separate loading points on two separate railroads.

The paper contains a subsidence measurement taken over a room and pillar panel of a mine located in northern West Virginia. A total of 72 monuments were used to determine a three dimensional view of mine subsidence. In addition, the results of measurements were used to compute ground strains with the use of a numerical model.

While this conference is dedicated to the examination of "Challenges in Mineral Processing," the broader aspect of the pursuit of this subject is Research and Development in the Mining Industry. When I was asked to speak at this symposium, I hesitated to accept. While my early schooling, training and professional occupation were in the field of this symposium, it was so long ago that I no longer feel competent to contribute anything of interest to you except perhaps for a limited historical perspective, which most of you probably already know. However, it might be worthwhile to explore the more general aspect of research and development from the viewpoint of management, as this is the stance from which I dealt with the subject for the last 30 years or so. While most managements generally have a positive view of research and development, few of the leaders in the mineral industry have actually had the personal experience of doing research for a long enough time to have obtained a full understanding and the feel for its place in the long-term technological innovation that our industry must foster. I graduated from the University of California in Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science degree and a major in metallurgy. It was during the great depression of the thirties, and it was difficult to obtain a practical job in the industry. I got a scholarship at the Montana School of Mines and received a Master of Science degree in ore dressing under Professor A. M. Gaudin, followed by another year with him pursuing research. Anyone who studied under him, or knew him well, would assert that this was a unique experience. Gaudin had a brilliant mind and a profound respect for science and the scientific method. The Little Rocky Mountains host epithermal gold-silver bearing vein and stockwork deposits in a syenite intrusive complex. Pegasus Gold Ltd. is currently mining the oxidized deposits by open-pit methods and recovering gold and silver by heap-leach processes. A geologic program has been designed to effectively determine the basic ore characteristics; 1)mineralization; 2)oxidation; 3)structural setting; 4)lithology; 5)alteration; and ultimately, 6)the leachability of the ore. Geologic mapping, sampling, drilling, assaying, and testing are routinely used in exploration, development, production control, mine planning, and ore reserve estimations. Timely and accurate assay results are essential for the program's success.

Currently, around 100 million tons of construction materials and aggregates are shipped annually by rail. And recently, producers are looking much more carefully at rail not only to reduce fixed costs through increased volume, but also to eliminate operating headaches, such as increasing community pressures about trucks on the road, noise and dust. Many producers are uncertain as to how to enter the rail shipping business since railroads have historically been reluctant to ship small quantities short distances. This article provides strategies to help producers examine and pursue moving their rock by rail.

Blasting is commonly viewed separately from mechanical handling and crushing. This view is misleading because the degree of fragmentation achieved by blasting can have a significant effect on the efficiency of these processes and, hence, on the overall cost of the mining operation. The structure and occurrence of nickeliferous laterite profiles are described and explained in terms of mineral solubility and drainage conditions. Complete profiles, from top to bottom, include: limonite zone; nontronite or silica zone; and saprolite zone. The middle zone is present only where drainage is sufficiently slow to allow saturation conditions to build up with resulting quartz or smectite precipitation. This precipitation may occur in any climate at a water table or in tropical climates with a long dry season. The degree of serpentinization of the laterite parent rock is important in determining the nature of the saprolite zone. Unserpentinized peridotite produces saprolite ores with hard residual rock cores, nontronitic or amorphous saprolitic rims, and fracture fillings of garnierite and quartz. Ser-pentinites yield relatively homogeneous serpentine saprolite, with minimal quartz or garnierite.

After a brief consideration of the properties of zinc sulfide minerals, their flotation characteristics, and their reactions with thiol collectors, the literature on the activation of the minerals by cupric ion, their deactivation by cyanide, and their depression is reviewed in detail. The distinction between deactivation and depression is stressed. The contradictions in the published results and theories are discussed and attempts are made to resolve them. It is concluded that, whereas all aspects of the subject require further investigation, the study of depression is most likely to yield benefits in practice.

This paper describes the development of a Windows-based interactive mine ventilation simulation software program at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). To enhance the operation of the underground ventilation system, Westinghouse Electric Corp. developed a program called WIPPVENT. While WIPPVENT includes most of the functions of the commercially available simulation program VNETPC from Mine Ventilation Services Inc. and uses the same subroutine to calculate airflow distributions, the user interface was completely rewritten as a Windows application with screen graphics. WIPPVENT is designed to interact with WIPP ventilation-monitoring systems through the sitewide central monitoring system. Data (e.g., air quantity and differential pressure) can be continuously collected from the underground ventilation remote-monitoring and control system and from the mine's weather stations (psychrometric data). Furthermore, WIPPVENT incorporates regulator characteristic curves specific to the site. The program utilizes this data to create and continuously update a real-time ventilation model. This paper discusses the design, the key features and the interactive capabilities of WIPPVENT.

"Underground refuge alternatives (RAs) require an air source to supply breathable air to the occupants. This requires pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent unsafe pressures from building up within the RA. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandates that PRVs prevent pressure from exceeding 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi or 5 in H2O), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure when a fan or compressor is used for the air supply. Research to date by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) suggests that the design and implementation of PRVs used in RAs has not yet had sufficient performance analysis or technical development. In response to this need, NIOSH tested a variety of PRVs using an instrumented test fixture consisting of data acquisition equipment, a centrifugal blower, ductwork, and various sensors to determine if subject PRVs meet the MSHA requirement. Relief pressures and flow characteristics including opening pressure and flow rate were measured for five different PRVs under a variety of conditions. Subject PRVs included two off-the-shelf modified check valves, two check valves used in MSHA-approved built-in-place (BIP) RAs, and a commercially available valve that was designed for a steel RA and is currently being used in some BIP RAs. The test results showed relief pressures ranging from 0.20 to 1.53 kPa (0.8 to 6.1 in H2O) and flow rates up to 19.3 m3/min (683 SCFM). INTRODUCTION The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) was enacted in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement [1]. Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed NIOSH to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives (RAs) for underground coal mines. This mandate culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to 30 CFR mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency RAs and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either self-contained mobile units or built-in-place (BIP) facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approval of RAs and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the RAs. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe RA atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi or 5.0 in. H2O), or at a pressure above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA as specified by the manufacturer when the breathable air is supplied by a fan or compressor [2]."

Centrifugal modeling was used to evaluate reclamation schemes of; (a) flocculants, (b) sand/clay mixes, (c) flocculants/sand addition and (d) capping with sand or sand/clay mix. Results suggest the hierarchy of effectiveness is: (d) capping, (b) s/c mixes, (c) flocculants/sand addition and (a) flocculants. Comparisions between currently used large strain consolidation computer programs reveal no difference between piecewise linear or finite strain calculations. Correlations between numerical and centrifugal model predictions reveal excellent agreement on magnitudes; however, rate predictions require improvement in laboratory input data and centrifugal scaling relationships.

Pig iron nuggets were produced in a laboratory scale furnace at Michigan Technological University. These nuggets are produced from pellets consisting of a mixture of iron oxide, coal, flux, and a binder, which are heated to 1450°C.These pellets then self-reduce to produce a solid, high-density, highly metallized (96.5% Fe) pig iron. During the nugget production process, a separate slag phase forms that cleanly separates from the metal. The physical and chemical properties of the pig iron nuggets are similar to pig iron produced by blast furnaces, which is distinct from Direct Reduced Iron (DRI).

The Copper Flat Property is located approximately 6 miles NE of the small town of Hillsboro in Sierra County, N. M. (Fig. 1). Hillsboro was the center of considerable mining activity in the late 1800's and early 1900's following the discover, of gold bearing vein deposits and later discovery of, placer gold along the east slopes of the Animas Hills. The Copper Flat orebody is a porphyry type deposit occurring in a small quartz monzonite porphyry stock that has intruded the center of a circular andesite plug (Fig. 2). The primary ore mineral is chalcopyrite. By-product values are contained in gold, silver and molybdenum.

The Haile Gold Mine is one of the earliest gold discoveries in the eastern United States as well as one of the largest gold producers from that region. Gold was first discovered in the gravels of what is now known as Haile Gold Mine Branch in 1828 on lands then owned by Colonel Benjamin Hale (spelling not the same). Small placer workings were immediately started and it was not long before the surrounding residual soils and saprolites were also found to contain gold. Following the presence of gold in the residuum eventually lead to the discovery of the underlying gold-bearing lodes that actually outcropped in saprolite form where not masked by heavy vegetation or a thin veneer of Coastal Plain sand. The earliest attempts at production, immediately after discovery, utilized slave labor, washing gravel and residuum from leased tracts that were 15m (50 ft) square. Several at- tempts at small milling operations were made during the en- suing decades, but there was really no substantial or successful production until the 1880s.

The European industrial minerals industry and its markets are largely self-sufficient. The companies who are members of the Industrial Minerals Association (IMA-Europe) number around 150 contributing 5 billion Euros to the EU?s GDP and range in size from global publicly quoted corporations to small family owned private companies. Their means and capability to implement sustainable development vary considerably. However the leading companies provide an excellent set of best practices, which IMA as a trade association with recognised core competencies in the field of sustainable development is ideally placed to promulgate throughout its membership. As an active participant in the EU Voluntary Scheme for SDI reporting IMA is not only working to increase the level of response to the SDI questionnaire but is also developing with its members a new sustainable development charter which its members will voluntarily adopt as a guiding principle for their implementation of sustainable development This work will be a consultative process involving all IMA?s section members as well as other trade associations, NGOs and MEPs. Public awareness of the benefits of minerals and their contribution to sustainable development has been raised by IMA?s awareness campaign now being followed by a more targeted programme aimed at MEPs. Further work in the future will consider product stewardship and life-cycle analysis. IMA is already positioning itself with the help of its members to assimilate the minerals industry of the accession territories in the sustainable development process.
