The mine fire at Wilberg Mine in 1984 reached the surface resulting in the failure of the vertical ledge forming the roof and entrance for three main intake portals. The fallen material was covered with a concrete cap to seal the air from the mine. As the mine was recovered and ventilation pressure was placed on seals on the perimeter of the fire area, the concrete capped rubble proved ineffective. Due to the steep and rugged terrain and the inaccessibility to the portals from underground, horizontal holes were drilled into the portal entries and three seals were placed remotely. The seals in conjunction with pressure balancing the seals around the perimeter of the fire area resulted -in the control of the mine fire.

Introduction With the increasing need to mine lower grade ores, high energy-related costs in comminution are of major concern. Very fine grinding is needed to liberate the fine mineral particles in these ores. Not only is this expensive, but it leads to greater losses in slimes. Gravity concentration techniques become unacceptably inefficient for particle treatment below 25 to 50 µm, and even flotation fails in the ultra-fine range. Ore from the South Crofty mine near Redruth, Cornwall, was subjected to thermal pretreatment in the hope that differential thermal expansion of the minerals would lead to intergranular cracking, and thus enhanced liberation. South Crofty ore contains about 1% tin as cassiterite associated with a complex assemblage of quartz, chlorite, tourmaline, and hema¬tite in granite and slate. Recovery of cassiterite can be as low as 70%, as overgrinding occurs during stage reduction of the material to 1 mm (primary grinding) and 180 µm (regrinding). Cassiterite is present in grain sizes ranging from submicroscopic to + 10 mm, the bulk being predominantly in the range of 50 µm to 3 mm. Experimental Flat polished sections of the ore were photographed in reflected light using a Vickers M17 microscope. The sections were then heated in a Carbolite LMF4 muffle furnace. The heating rate and temperature were monitored by a thermocouple immersed in the bed of particles. Previous work by Sherring (1981) on the same material showed that a 55% reduction in grinding resistance occurred when the material was rapidly heated and cooled through the quartz inversion tem¬perature (573°C), where a volumetric expansion of 0.86% occurs. The samples were therefore heated to 650°C at 26°/min, and were then water-quenched to room temperature. The effect of heat treatment on the mineralogy and fracture network was assessed by examining the same area after treatment. Results Most of the sections examined showed that extensive transgranular cracking occurred as a result of heat treatment. Such cracking, although weakening the rock and hence reducing the work index, would in no way enhance the liberation of the cassiterite from the host minerals. Intergranular cracking, which would lead to enhanced liberation, was difficult to discern under reflected light, but there was evidence of such cracking in some of the sections examined. Figures 1 and 2 are examples of typical sections before and after heat treatment. Figures la and lb - show cassiterite in hematite, Fig. lb, in normal incident illumination, illustrating clearly that after heat treatment, transgranular fracture is evident in the cassiterite. If any intergranular cracking has occurred, it is not evident in this photograph. Figures 2a and 2b show cassiterite in quartz before and after treatment. Fracturing in both minerals after treatment can clearly be seen, and there is evidence of intergranular fracturing. However, protruding "arms" of cassiterite are severed by transgranular fracture. Subgrains of quartz have also been isolated by trans¬granular fracture. There is major transgranular cracking across the wider sections of cassiterite. Discussion The effect of rapidly heating South Crofty tin ore to 650°C, followed by water-quenching to room temperature, has been studied by observing the fracture networks in mineral grains. The choice of 650°C as the heating temperature was influenced by the work of Sherring (1981), who found considerable reduction in grinding resistance after thermal pretreatment of the same ore. Scheding et al. (1981), however, have shown, by means of a crude calculation, that heat treatment cannot be justified solely on the basis of reduced grinding costs. The cost of heat treatment far out-weighs that of grinding, resulting in the combined costs for heat treatment being over six times that for grinding unheated material. The most economically attractive aspect of heat treatment is the possibility of enhanced liberation of the valuable mineral due to increased intergranular rather than transgranular fracture. Grinding costs would be greatly reduced by improved liberation at coarser sizes, and the costs of ancillary processes, such as dewatering and tailings disposal, would be reduced. The most significant economic effect, however, would be in improved metallurgical efficiency. Improved liberation would increase concentrate grades, and recoveries would be higher, particularly in the case of ores where high slime losses are produced due to the excessively fine grinding required to produce adequate liberation. Manser (1983) has shown that only a 1% increase in tin recovery, at the same concentrate grade, would be sufficient to offset heat treatment costs on South Crofty ore. Heavy liquid analysis and shaking table separation have been used to evaluate the effect of thermal treatment on processing (Binns, 1984; Scheding, 1981; Sherring, 1981). However, treatment of unheated and heated samples of South Crofty ore, ground to the same product size, by such methods have shown little evidence of improved metallurgical efficiency after thermal pretreatment. The large amount of transgranular fracturing revealed by reflected light studies helps to explain this lack of improvement. Direct-reduction processes for converting iron ores to metallic iron in the solid state have been available for some time; and whenever scrap becomes expensive, there is a new wave of interest in these processes. It is well established that direct reduction, coupled with electric-furnace steelmaking, is a technically viable method for making steel and in some circumstances is economically competitive with the conventional blast-furnace--basic-oxygen-process (BOP) route to steel. This raises a number of interesting questions, several of which could be of great interest to the coal and ore mining industries. For example, what are the quality requirements of the raw materials for direct-reduction--electric-furnace steelmaking? Would they be different from the present requirements for blast-furnace--BOP steelmaking? Other questions relate to how much steel will be made by the direct-reduction route in the future. The quality questions can be discussed with a fair degree of certainty, but a prediction of the amount of steel that will be produced by the direct-reduction--electric-furnace route is beyond the scope of this paper. However, an attempt will be made to identify some of the factors that will influence whether there is a swing to direct reduction and the rate at which it may occur.

Many coal beds in the State of Washington, pitching as much as 90°, offer unusual mining conditions. This paper describes methods and safe practices of mechanized mining in pitching bituminous-coal beds that have attracted the attention of mining people from most of the coal-producing countries of the world. The development and use of continuous miners as part of the mechanized program apply particularly to the Roslyn-Cle Elum coalfield, Kittitas County, Wash. All three mines now operating in the field use continuous miners and during 1957 furnished 72 percent of the State's total coal production. Mining operations are now conducted in three coal beds of the Roslyn-Cle Elum field. The coal measures range from 3-1/2 to 20 feet in thickness and vary in dip from 5° to 45° in the localities where the coal is mined. "During construction of a 9.5-ft. diameter sanitary sewer tunnel, the City of Edmonton encountered a large pocket of flowing sand that flooded their TBM and caused significant surface subsidence, stopping further tunneling by the TBM through this zone. A unique collaborative effort ensued between the authors representing the city, consulting engineers and academic researchers to develop the optimal strategy for grouting the problematic soils. The site has a layer of very find sand between 20 and 30 ft. in depth with fines contents ranging from 5% to more than 40%. The collaboration extended from requesting additional site investigation efforts to shipping samples to the UT-Austin laboratories for grout testing plus ground and grouting characterization tests resulting in field recommendations for a full scale ground improvement program. New research information on the grouting of fine sands along with a collaborative framework for the design of in-situ grouting projects are the key topics presented. INTRODUCTION Encountering a large unexpected pocket of flowing sand with an open-faced TBM while excavating a tunnel below the groundwater table is never a good thing. This was certainly true for the City of Edmonton when one of their Lovat TBM’s became inundated by flowing sand while excavating the 9.5-ft. diameter Millwoods Double Barrel Replacement Tunnel in September 2013. However, since the City of Edmonton self-performed this work, a rare situation existed where the site could be investigated objectively, without the prejudice of contending parties selectively influencing how information was gathered and presented, to accurately examine site conditions with a goal of identifying the best remediation measures."

Coal produced from surface mines in the Western United States is becoming a more important part of this nation's economy as other types of fuels become scarce. This paper reports the investigation of alternative methods of handling the parting between two coal seams. The results of this investigation are presented as the engineering-economic aspects of alternative parting handling methods involving stowing or back filling techniques. The coal and parting characteristics were selected as being representative of those under consideration or actively mined in the West. The basic philosophy of evaluation is to establish a mine-within-a-mine where equipment selected for minimal capital investment can remove the parting and second seam nearly independent of the ongoing, present production. With proper consideration of design, this parting-coal removal is evaluated as a second operation within the first and has its own profitability measure. The Fort Union Area of Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas contains large reserves of low sulfur sub-bituminous coal. In many locations, several coal seams are close to the surface and are separated by relatively thin layers of parting. The removal of overburden and the mining of the upper seam is accomplished effectively with conventional mining methods and equipment. Mining a second seam of coal and handling the parting in accord with economic and environmental controls presents a number of problems. Typically, mining companies have adapted the conventional strip mining techniques used in the East. However, the extreme thickness of the western coal seams offers alternative mining method possibilities for parting and second seam removal.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) initiated a program in 1976 to develop and demonstrate an instrument system for on-line continuous measurement of coal properties. The program has focused on the use of Prompt Neutron Activation Analysis (PNAA) for elemental determinations and microwave absorption for moisture determination. One of the major results of the EPRI program is the development of the CONAC (Continuous On-Line Analysis of Coal) instrument, with Science Applications, Inc. (SAI) as the prime contractor and Kennedy Van Saun Corporation as a subcontractor.

Analytical models for transient groundwater phenomena, such as those of Theis, Cooper, and Jacob, are important but often limited tools for aquifer evaluation and drawdown prediction. Most were developed using simplifying assumptions which compromise their treatment of complex boundaries and most also contain functions that are mathematically complex and difficult to solve explicitly. Examples of such functions are the Bessel functions, the exponential integral, and similar well functions for leaky confined and water table aquifers. This paper describes the joint use of simple numerical techniques and numerical approximations of these functions to extend many analytical models beyond their conventional applications. The enhanced analytical methods represent many hydrologic problems more easily and realistically, permit a wider range of application, and often provide insight into the response of pumped groundwater systems without the need to resort to more complex numerical flow models. Use of the enhanced analytical methods usually requires the use of microcomputers due to the large number of computations. Examples presented here are the development and extension of type curves and the determination of drawdown distributions.

"PROJECT OVERVIEWThe Sistema de Potabilización Área Norte project (Northern Area Purification System) was a major expansion of the potable water system in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The aim of the project was to transport and purify raw water from the Paraná River to provide potable water for five communities in the northern part of the province, benefitting up to two million inhabitants. The project was constructed by a joint venture of four South American contractors (“the JV”), and consisted of the following key components:• Treatment Plant: A 16 hectare area was cleared for the construction of a treatment plant to purify 900,000 m3/day of raw water from the Paraná River and distribute it to the surrounding communities.• Bored Tunnel: Nearly 15 km of 3.6 m inner diameter tunnel, ranging from 18 to 22 m below grade, was bored with two EPB tunnel boring machines to draw the raw water from the river. The TBMs started from a central launch shaft and proceeded in opposite directions: Cristina advanced northbound to the Paraná River Intake System, and Liliana advanced southbound to the new treatment plant.• Access & Ventilation Shafts: Five access shafts and eight ventilation shafts were installed along the length of the tunnel. The access shafts were designed to provide entry points for inspection and maintenance of the final tunnel. The five shafts consisted of: one central launch shaft in the middle of the tunnel alignment, one retrieval shaft at each end of the tunnel (Intake and Treatment Plant, respectively), and two intermediate shafts. The intermediate shafts were installed before the TBM passed, with a final liner to be installed afterwards. Access Shaft 3, the intermediate shaft located between the launch shaft and the treatment plant, experienced persistent leaks during initial excavation attempts."

Total world energy consumption is projected to continue its strong growth of recent years. Because coal is the most abundant fossil fuel, it will likely remain an important energy source, particularly for power generation, into at least the early years of the next millennium. Clean coal technologies are available today that can economically reduce air pollution, primarily SO2 NOx and particulates, and for the higher efficiency technologies, CO2, from power generation. U.S. Department of Energy analyses show that the adoption of clean coal technologies could decrease carbon emissions worldwide while creating a strong export market with attendant creation of jobs in the U.S.

Dynamic permeability is a significant hydrologic condition associated with in-situ leaching at the Cyprus Casa Grande operations. Several factors contribute to changes in the permeability conditions. They are: 1) hydraulically induced fracture development, 2) geochemical changes during leaching in the rock matrix, and 3) changes in the relative degree of saturation of the deposit. Dynamic permeability conditions were evaluated using available pressure and flow rates from the 58 injection and recovery wells obtained over one year period. A finite element, 2-D hydrologic model called INVERT which is designed to estimate aquifer parameters under transient and steady state flow conditions was used for the investigation. The permeability conditions during 7 different steady state intervals throughout the one year time frame were determined. The results confirm that big changes in permeability occur as a function of time as well as a function of injection pressure condition.

The basic goal of this investigation was to determine the degree of drying of high moisture lignite through the use of high temperature and pressure steam autoclaves. Specific items studied were: a) the effect of lignite particle size, b) steam temperature and pressure required, and c) the time of ahydration. Although removal of sodium, ash, sulfur and other ash-forming minerals was not the goal of this study, basic analysis of effluent water showed organic material and alkalai metal content. Removal of inherent moisture from run-of-mine lignite was tested by lock-feeding the lignite, which was previously sized by screening into 25 kg autoclaves. High pressure, up to 4.053 MPa (588 psi), saturated steam was then introduced into the pressure reactor. Reaction time, pressure, temperature, and depressurization rates were strictly controlled for each reactor test run. Results indicate that about 80% of lignite total moisture was removed, including some of the inherent moisture, yielding a non-oxidized, and thus stable, lignite product. As stated, a side benefit occurred as some reduction of non-combustible portions of the lignite also took place. The conclusion reached as a result of the tests is that the steam-drying process can be successfully applied to reducing moisture in lignite, and may be considered for additional studies on acceleration of the coalification process. On the basis of the data presented, the author believes that lignite can be economically upgraded in steam autoclaves by simultaneously reducing the moisture content by 80 percent and the sulfur content by at least 50 percent. Upgrading the lignite by this method will result in large energy and financial savings.

Despite its great potential utility, ion exchange has only achieved limited application in hydrometallurgy. To a significant extent this is due to the limitations of conventional ion exchange process design as well as the properties of the ion exchange resins themselves. Over the past decade several new ion exchange resins have been introduced with properties that make them potentially very useful for various hydrometallurgical separations. In addition, a novel ion exchange process called Reciprocating Flow Ion Exchange or Recoflo, which has been employed in the metal finishing industry for the last dozen or so years for chemical recovery and effluent treatment, has been shown to offer a number of unique and significant advantages over conventional I.X. technology.

Coal mines in the Illinois Basin have not engaged in pillar recovery for many decades. In large part, this is due to the exceptionally weak nature of much of the roof in the region. But, as room-and-pillar mining is conducted at greater depths, and larger pillars become necessary, recovering them becomes more attractive. Recently a western Kentucky coal mine became the first in recent times to successfully employ full pillar recovery. This paper describes the many challenges that were overcome during the process. From the beginning, the focus was on protecting the miners from roof instability, using cable bolts, mesh, mobile roof supports (MRS), and engineered final stumps. Two short test panels were extracted first, and the results were used to adjust the support pattern and mining sequence. Further adjustments were made based on subsequent experience. To date, seven panels have been recovered without a ground fall injury.

A composite material consists of two or more dissimilar components. These dissimilar components retain their identities when mixed together and contribute to the properties of the composite. A composite usually consists of two parts, the matrix and the reinforcing material, or extender that is added to the matrix. Typical materials used as the matrix in composites are metals, polymers, and ceramics. The reinforcing material can be added for any number of reasons. For instance, if the matrix is expensive, an inexpensive filler may be added to the matrix to lower the cost of the product without sacrificing properties. An example of this is calcite (CaC03) which is added to systems such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), to lower the cost. Reinforcements may also serve as a means to enhance the properties of the matrix material. For example, carbon fibers are frequently added to plastics to increase their strength, and glass spheres may be added to plastics to improve flexural strength. Mg(OH)z is added to polymers to give the property of fire retardancy. The latter is the focus of this paper.

As part of a much larger research project, factor analysis was employed to help interpret and compare the geochemical signatures produced by two different sample media; a traditional -80# soil fraction, and a coarse float. Both sample types were collected by hand auger from the extension zone of the Redmoor sheeted-vein complex and analyzed -for 19 major and trace elements. The rationale behind the study infers that the geochemical anomalies produced by wallrock alteration around such targets can be better detected in the lithogeochemical rather than the soil environment, sometimes at considerable distance from their source.

Mechanical sorting of "poor" rock accumulated from past native copper mining operations has been under study at the Michigan Tech's Institute of Mineral Research for several years. Prior to this work, the poor rock dumps totaling approximately 9 million tons containing an estimated 35-70 million pounds of copper (1) have been considered mainly as a local source of road aggregate used from time to time and consequently of minor value. An electro¬mechanical sorting machine developed by International Sorting Systems Corporation of Santa Barbara, California has been tested for preconcentration of the waste rock before conventional milling (2,3). The ISSC machine has possibilities for underground preconcentration of crushed mine-run native copper ores. The objective of the study described here was to provide information about limi¬tations on sortability due to characteristics of the ore and present crushing practices. When the native copper mines were in operation prior to termination in 1969, two types of ore were produced, amygdaloidal and conglomeritic. In the first type copper occurs in vesicles left by gas bubbles entrapped during rapid cooling of the tops of lava flows. The conglomeritic ore beds consist of rounded pebbles and fragments cemented together by calcite, epidote, chlorite, and feldspar; the copper occurs around pebbles, in cracks, and sometimes as partial or total re¬placements of pebbles. The copper in the conglomeritic ore usually is in finer grain sizes than that in the amygdaloidal ore, and large (plus 4 inch) copper masses are virtually absent.

Relationships among mine and injured miner characteristics and HSAC's degrees of injury are examined for 91,404 injuries in under- ground bituminous coal mines in the United States from 1975 through 1982. Injury severity varies by the mining system, geographical region, circumstances surrounding the injury, the injured miner's age, whether the miner was using powered equipment, the year which the injury occurred, and the location in the mine where the injury happened. Injury severity is not related to the injured miner's total mining experience, job experience, and experience in the mine in which the injury occurred.

INTRODUCTION This paper traces the application of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) at industrial and pilot scale in Australia. The Argyle Diamond Mine installed the first of two smooth segmented HPGRs during 1990 in an open-circuit secondary-tertiary crushing application to increase throughput. In 2002 a third HPGR was added to improve liberation and so increase the recovery of smaller diamonds. The latest improvements in wear technology (tyre with tungsten carbide studs) were incorporated in the design of this machine. Extensive HPGR pilot-plant trials were undertaken during the 1990s at both the Kalgoorlie Consolidate Gold Mine and the Boddington Gold Mine. The purpose of these trials was to evaluate HPGR as a method to increase throughput, as an alternative to SAG milling, and also to ascertain if downstream benefits existed. One of the challenges for HPGR circuit designers is to translate what occurs at small laboratory and pilot scale into what is likely to happen in a full-scale circuit. Scale-up from pilot machine results is normally recommended by manufacturers. However, such tests need relatively large quantities of material, particularly if meaningful data on wear are to be obtained. Laboratory tests are preferable, as they need relatively small quantities of ore, but may be questioned in terms of how they relate to full-scale operation. Modelling and simulation have played a particularly important role in this respect in Australia. Models are available which have proven to be very accurate at being able to scale throughput and specific energy response from laboratory to industrial machines. More recently, work in Australia has also been done in developing a model which has the potential to scale laboratory wear data as well.
