ASARCO Incorporated has upgraded or is in the process of upgrading the Galena mine electrical, pumping, refrigeration, compressed air, ventilation, hoisting and rockburst monitoring systems to allow continued mining and development work on the 1 589-m (5,200-ft.) level and to provide services for projected deeper mining and development. Additionally, a separate lead-silver milling circuit has been added to the silver-copper mill to process lead-silver ore reserves. This paper describes completed and planned improvements made to date on these systems.

A Denver Autometrics Particle Size Monitor, PSM-400, was installed at Golden Sunlight Mines, Inc. in October 1988. The PSM-400 measures the grind product's particle size and percent solids. The particle size is used to control grind size by automatically adjusting mill feed rate. The PSM's continuous response to ore changes has improved grind product uniformity and mill throughput. Metallurgical testing has shown the PSM's accuracy to be +/-1 % + 150 µm (100 mesh).

In this paper, the logic and the capabilities of a long term production planning method for open pit mining are presented. The method is the first attempt in obtaining simultaneous solutions to the four interrelated parameters of open pit mining; 1) the mine life, 2) the specific blocks to be mined each year, 3) the amount of ore and waste to be mined each year, and 4) the ultimate pit limits. An efficient cutoff grade can also be obtained through a sensitivity analysis. None of the existing methods can bring such a comprehensive solution to the problem. A production plan for a real life gold deposit is given to illustrate the logic and the capabilities of the method.

Utah Power and Light Company's Deer Creek Mine had been developed to a point where mine ventilation efficiency had declined to an unacceptable level. Problems identified were ventilation of inactive areas, excessive leakage, and restrictions in the return and intake air ways. Mine management implemented an intensive mine ventilation improvement program to alleviate future problems with respirable dust in the working sections and diesel equipment emissions. Program objectives included sealing of inactive areas of the mine, rehabilitation of high resistance areas, and construction of additional intake and return aircourses. Applications of computer modeling techniques are used to predict the effects of ventilation changes and improvements. Improvements are then prioritized to achieve the largest efficiency increases first. Actual real time assessment of the mine environment and ventilation changes are accomplished with a mine wide monitoring computer system. The Deer Creek ventilation improvement program has more than doubled the ventilating efficiency of the mine.

Rhenium is a valuable and extremely rare chemical element with unique chemical properties. It is extracted commercially as a byproduct from the processing of molybdenite associated with porphyry copper ores. There is a present interest in recovering rhenium from copper pregnant leach solutions (PLS) produced by copper heap and stockpile leaching. These solutions contain rhenium at very dilute concentrations, typically in the 1 mg/L concentration range. This paper describes laboratory column ion exchange experiments to extract rhenium from these solutions using weakly basic anion exchange resins and actual plant PLS from two operating mines. The dynamic loading and elution behavior of Re on Purolite® A170 and A172 is discussed.

With the recent technological advances; Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) have become a viable economic alternative to drill and blast in hard rock excavation. These machines are finding increasing use in underground mine development due to the potential benefits they offer. The successful application of TBM technology to mining depends on the selection of the most suitable equipment and cutting tools for the rock and ground conditions to be encountered. In addition to required testing and geotechnical investigations, cutterhead design optimization is an integral part of the machine selection to assure a successful application of the machines in a specific project. This paper presents and discusses the back-ground of TBM application in a mining environment and the lessons learned, the process of conducting site investigation and the necessary laboratory testing together with machine selection and performance estimation for TBM use III mine development.

This paper reports measurement results for radio frequency (RF) propagation around 90° corners in tunnels and underground mines, for vertically, horizontally and longitudinally polarized signals. Measurements of signal power attenuation from a main entry into a crosscut were performed at four frequencies — 455, 915, 2450 and 5800 MHz — that are common to underground radio communication systems. From the measurement data, signal power loss was determined as a function of signal coupling from the main entry into the crosscut. The resultant power loss data show there are many factors that contribute to power attenuation from a main entry into a crosscut, including frequency, antenna polarization and crosssectional entry dimensions.

Definition of glass sand prospects may be modified by constraints which range from demography to critically important product-control. Characteristics of usable raw materials, physical and chemical, are discussed; an ideal raw material is defined. Following field investigations and preliminary sampling, evaluation of selected prospects includes use of modern drilling techniques, viz.: core, percussion (air-hammer), auger, jet, rotary jet, split-spoon and other. Nearly complete core (sample) return is mandatory. Land-use regulations, availability of water and transportation continue to direct exploration in a major sense. But fitting a prospect to burdensome politics nay be considered a decidedly negative factor.

This paper deals with the occurrence of basic and ultrabasic rocks and their relationship in space and time to major structures of the earth. In order to introduce the paper properly, I must go back a little and try to put the subject in perspective. In the brief time that geology has been a scientific occupation, ore deposits have been grouped and classified in various ways depending on the theories that happened to be popular at the time. Some of the early scientists said that ore came from fire, other schools argued that ore originated from water. Then came the lateral secretionists and in later years the hydrothermalists led by the Lindgren school and the latter has largely been accepted as the modern concept of ore deposits. It now seems apparent that the hydrothermal school is being seriously challenged by other schools of thought. It also seems that we have reached the point where we should be willing to admit that we do not really know in most cases how the ore got to its present position. However, for practical purposes, we can classify ore deposits as to the environment in which they do occur. This is not difficult and gives the field geologist and the mining engineer something to work with and to believe in, and it gives them a basis for carrying out their field work. Mine-to-mill improvements can be initiated at any stage, but it is our assertion that drilling accuracy is a practical anchor in any operating mine or quarry for a structured continuous improvement process. This paper will: 1. Define deviations from plan and provide some best practices for maintaining drilling accuracy. 2. Introduce tools and methods to monitor and calculate consequences of accurate versus inaccurate drilling. 3. Demonstrate the use of these tools and methods and their impact on one cost item, the mitigation of oversized material by a hydraulic hammer. 4. Provide recommendations for implementing improvements.

The near-infrared (NIR) (12,000-4,000 cm-1) region of the electromagnetic spectrum, between the mid-infrared and visible, has often been viewed by spectroscopists to be of limited utility. This is unfortunate, and recently the use of the NIR has increased greatly, primarily for the quantitative analysis of food and agricultural products. However, many other areas of application of NIR spectroscopy remain unexamined. In this paper a novel use of NIR in the area of flotation chemistry is demonstrated. Specifically, it is shown that NIR/Internal Reflection Spectroscopy (IRS) can be used to quantify collector adsorption reactions in-situ.

Flotation columns and their variations are increasingly replacing conventional cells in mineral processing circuitry. While the operational characteristics of columns differ from those of conventional cells, the same scale-up methodologies are being employed in design. This practice may be attributed to poor understanding of the factors controlling throughput. The use of tall flotation columns is frequently justified on the requirement for increased particle residence time. It is shown that longer particle residence times in the column cell alone do not translate into increased recoveries. Throughput data from several industrial flotation column installations is presented. An attempt at using dimensional analysis to provide scale-up methodology for the factors controlling column throughput is made.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated new methods for increasing the selectivity in flotation by creating and regulating reagent concentration gradients within flotation columns at steady-state operation. Gradients were generated and traced in a water-only system with the use of fluorescent dyes, and the effects of various operating parameters on these gradients were investigated. From this investigation, it was found that both gradual and steep gradients could be generated in the froth cleaning zone, and that these gradients could be changed through the manipulation of both physical and chemical operating parameters. The application of reagent-gradient control to mineral systems could improve both flotation grade and recovery in commercial flotation operations without the use of additional flotation circuitry.

INTRODUCTION The National Park Service (NPS) conducted a research program from mid-1975 to early 1978 to measure alpha radiation levels in natural caves which it administers. Subsequently, a long-term management program was developed which has conducted routine monitoring of radiation levels and has computed employee exposure accumulations in certain NPS caves. The overall program: research and management; was undertaken to evaluate the possible health hazard to cave visitors, interpreters, researchers, maintenance personnel, concessions employees and other workers and to protect their health. The results of this work have been reported extensively elsewhere (see References 1 through 3, 5, 6, 9 through 13, and 14 through 26). This paper deals with the relation of radon gas and daughter produced radiation levels to the cave air flows which mobilize them. These flows are a function of interior cave and exterior ambient air temperatures and pressures and of the cave's geophysical configuration. The low-level, ionizing radiation is produced by minute concentrations of radon and thoron gases which emanate from within caves. Because of confinement, the radiation levels are often appreciably higher than in surface atmospheres. Subsequent radioactive disintegration of the gases into their ionized "daughter" products, which are particulates, permits distribution of the alpha radiation throughout a cave system. The extent and character of this distribution depends upon the particular cave and the air flows which it produces. Thus, the alpha radiation serves as a "tracer" to describe the flows. The flow analysis is divided into two parts: 1) A qualitative description with respect to the two basic geophysical cave types over both long-term (annual) and short-term (diurnal to weekly) periods. 2) A quantitative description of the unsteady, uniform and non-uniform, one-dimensional, incompressible motions for both influent and effluent air flow situations in both basic geophysical cave types. A part of the qualitative description presents "Special Measurement" data: Tsivoglou [vs.] Kusnetz working levels, Tsivoglou individual daughter levels and free ion concentrations, radon gas concentrations, and equilibrium ratios. A great deal of important work has been carried out by Mr. Bobby C. Carson, Cave Radiation Technician at Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky. He reports these findings later in this conference (Ref. 6). Some of his results have been used here to establish the cave air flow analysis. Other National Park Service personnel have made measurements at others of the caves for which data are reported here. All of this work and cooperation has been vital to the success of this research program. It is very much appreciated. THEORETICAL FLOW DESCRIPTION Previously reported research (See Ref's. 20, 21, 23 and 25) has established the qualitative relationship between the alpha radiation in caves and their natural air flows. The radiation serves as a representation of these air flows. Changes in radiation with time represent changes in the main forces which produce the air flows. The quantitative data have substantiated that [all caves in which the primary cause of air flow is due to temperature produced gravity (density) gradients and also having minimal man-made disturbances, experience seasonal variations in airborne alpha radiation. The radiation levels increase in summer but decrease in winter], based upon seasonal air movements through each cave system which occur naturally. Two general types of physical cave configurations which control the air flows have been identified as: 1. Those which go up into a hillside or mountainside: Type I ("Upside-down" = USD). 2. Those which go down into the earth; Type II ("Right-side-up" = RSU). These act to control the air flows seasonally. The summer increase in Type I caves is due to increased air flows, whereas in Type II caves it results from stagnation or reduced air flows. This seeming paradox is explained by the physics of the air flow regime in each cave type and has been detailed elsewhere [Ref's. (20), (22) through (25)]. It[ i] true, in general, that air flow decreases airborne radiation in the [immediate vicinity] in which it occurs. Any paradox results from subsequent distribution throughout the case as to [ how] the air moves through a cave [system] with respect to time and space. Exceptions to the cave air flow "rule" are: 1. Caves in which pressure gradients and pressure fluctuations [predominate] in producing the air flows. 2. Caves in which man-made effects and management practices are superimposed on the natural air flow regime. Man-made disturbances which can alter the natural cave air flows are tunnels, elevator shafts, bore holes, sealed and closed portals, etc. If these are not properly sealed, the natural air flows which they change will totally alter the distribution and seasonal variations of the alpha radiation levels. These exceptions may act separately or in combination.

The state of Arizona produced 253,276.2 metric tons (279,000 st) of crude gypsum during 1986. This represents approximately 1.7% of the total U.S. production. Four mines provided Arizona's gypsum, three of these mines are in the San Pedro Valley. The uses of the gypsum produced in Arizona are for manufacture of cement, agricultural uses, and wallboard manufacture. The gypsum is used as a retarder in the manufacture of Portland cement. The use in agriculture is treatment of alkali soils to allow water penetration. Other deposits in the San Pedro Valley have production potential, providing there is sufficient market for additional wallboard. The author completed an evaluation of one property earlier this year.

The mining methods used at many opencast brown coal mines in Poland and the German Democratic Republic are not used in the US to any extent. Using bucketwheel excavators, bucket chain excavators, and mobile conveyor bridges, the mining techniques may offer efficient, economic alternatives for operators in the US. These mining methods were observed during visits to several open-cast brown coal mines in Eastern Europe over the past two years. Some of them may be particularly attractive for the large lignite mines being planned in North Dakota and Texas.

The purpose of this paper is to outline briefly some basic principles of ground-water hydrology that have application in mine hydrology and to suggest that an understanding of these principles can help to forestall problems that are internal as regards mining operations and external as regards damage or harm to surrounding areas. The development of a mine below the water table pleads for accurate values to answers of hydrologic problems. Such internal problems involve both an inflow of water without adequate drainage facilities and a deficiency of water for the required mining or milling use. Methods which give acceptable quantitative values for the solution of many ground-water problems depend on rather simple geologic structures, characterized chiefly by homogeneous rocks of considerable areal extent. Unfortunately, mining operations are likely to be centered where rocks are not homogeneous. Consequently, methods that attempt to show values of the storage and transmitting capacity of rocks in mining areas must be applied with caution. In spite of complex geology and apparent uniqueness of individual mines and quarries, adherence to some concepts of ground-water occurrence and movement should be helpful to mine operators. Mining operations that extend below the water table disturb the natural hydrologic regimen. Prior to development, the water table slopes away from the site of a mine in at least one direction, but as soon as development begins and water is removed from the mine, the mine becomes the apex of a depressed cone in the water table, causing a convergence in the flow of water toward the mine, The behavior of the cone of depression, as it tends to deepen and to increase in areal extent when the mine is deepened, is related to the rate of withdrawal of water necessary to keep the mine dry. The significance and nature of the cone of depression in the vicinity of pumped wells has been studied by ground-water hydrologists for years, but the cone caused by pumping water from mines has generally been less systematically appraised. The concentration of low grade iron ores to pellets or sinter fines suitable for blast furnace feed or direct reduction is highly energy intensive and costly in terns of both size reduction and separatory processes. Large equipment with high throughputs are required to make the fine grinds and multi-stage separations economical. Control of these circuits is essential to producing a high grade product. As a result, iron ore concentrators possess some of the more sophisticated instrumentation for process control in the mineral dressing industry. These instruments must characterize flowstreams of up to 8,000 gpm where 80% of the particles are less than 50 µm. The past decade has been one where enormous strides have been made in automated control of iron ore plants. This paper reviews state-of- the-art control systems for crushing, grinding, magnetic separation, froth flotation and sizing/classifying circuits. Trends toward computerization and plant automation in response to a dismal outlook for North American steel production are also examined.

"The Scale-Distance formula is one of the primary means of determining the maximum amount of explosives that can be safely detonated at one time by a single delay. This paper describes a method of applying the Scale-Distance formula to the entire mining area using gridded surfaces. Using this technique, the operator can better determine the economic impact of nearby structures on the mine plan. INTRODUCTION As the surface mining of coal and stone encroaches near populated areas, precautions must be taken to minimize blast vibration damage to protected structures. The common method employed to minimize vibration damage is not to reduce the total amount of explosive in the hole (which would negatively affect fragmentation), but rather to introduce delays to reduce the amount of explosive detonated at any point in time. The Scale-Distance formula, an industry-accepted standard, may be used to calculate the maximum weight of explosive that can be detonated at one time without damaging the structure. This information may then be used to determine the number of delays required for each hole. Detonators make up a large part of the cost of blasting. At roughly $15 per detonator an additional detonator in the hole can be significant. It is normal to set off hundreds of holes at in one shot. An additional detonator in each hole can cost additional thousands of dollars per shot. The number of detonators is also a function of the depth of the holes and the hole spacing. Being able to accurately forecast the economic impact of blasting near structures improves a company’s ability to make informed decisions on how to approach property owners. Operators basically have three options when dealing with property owners: 1. Buy the property and blast without restriction 2. Negotiate with property owner for a waiver to allow unrestricted blasting 3. Comply with the legal blasting restrictions This paper proposes a method for the engineer to forecast for all points in the proposed mining area the impact of nearby structures upon the blast design. Being able to create a contour map and ultimately estimate the number of delays required for the entire forecasted mining area, the engineer can create accurate economic forecasts of the cost of blasting. The objective is to reduce the level of uncertainty in the forecast of the blast component portion of the forecast."

The eighties are likely to witness the first commercial-size coal-to-gasoline plant(s) in the U.S., although uncertainty regarding crude prices and cautious involvement of the Federal Government in the synfuels development are evident. The formation of The U.S. Synthetic Fuels Corporation with passage of the Energy Security Act is projected to pave the way for some of the projects on a moderate scale. The corporate objectives (1) are to provide funds for supporting a number of feasibility studies and loan guarantees for the construction of at least some commercial-size plants and the possibility of product price supports or purchase commitments. There are a number of coal conversion processes (2) currently under evaluation for producing either gaseous or liquid plus gaseous fuels, the other processes such as SRC I are for producing desulfurized deashed clean solid fuel for commercial use.
