An overview of the history of mining technology, both past and present, shows that some of the new concepts being successfully applied have changed the reserve categorization and are having an overall impact on production. Past coal mining operations in the eastern coal fields, and especially in Appalachia, extensively utilized stripping with the predominately applied contour method. As a result, vast mountainous areas have abandoned benches left behind by past mining operations. While thicker seams previously stripped were usually mined by underground or mountain top removal methods, thin seams beyond technical or economical limits were left intact after contour mining had reached the ultimate height of the wall. These thin seams quite often contain high BTU, low ash and sulfur coal that makes them attractive for a secondary recovery due to the market requirements. Secondary highwall recovery has obvious potential and is economically attractive; however, with the present state of industrial experience and lack of analysis of site data, a trial and error approach is used by operators.

Linear cutting tests of a porous sandstone with a radial drag pick show that saturation of rock with water can increase the specific energy of fragmentation. This appears to be due, in this case, to a saturation-induced increase in the forces acting on the cutting tool without a concomitant increase of the fragmented volume. The mechanisms of this reaction are explored by examining various responses of the parameters controlled and induced during the linear cutting tests, such as cut spacing, cutter penetration, three-dimensional forces and muck production. A program of load-indentation testing is underway to evaluate the permeability threshold of this behavior. These findings are opposite from those made when the same rock is cut with a constant cross-section disc cutter reported elsewhere (Abu Bakar and Gertsch, 2011). Such results highlight the effects of different cutting tool designs, and indicate the need for a well-coordinated program of research to support effective excavator design and selection.

A site-specific blasting model has been developed for the Asarco Mission mine. The main inputs to the model are the in situ block size (F80), the post-blast fragmentation (P80) and the intact tensile strength (To). The output from the model is the specific blast energy (ESE). Modern techniques are being used to obtain the input parameters for the site-specific blast fragmentation model. In particular, image processing software is used to obtain both the in situ block size and the post-blast fragmentation, and the Schmidt hammer is used to obtain the tensile strength at numerous locations throughout the rock mass. An initial model was developed using five test shots in an area of the mine that contains argillite and is relatively homogeneous. This process also included calibrating Schmidt hammer readings against actual Brazilian tensile measurements. The model for argillite will be updated as more tests are conducted, and the model will be extended to the four other primary rock types at the Asarco Mission mine.

This article concludes a two-part series on the safety, technology, and economic impact of eliminating safety fuse from metal and nonmetal mines. Discussed are the consequences of fuse abolishment, the technical feasibility of changing to an alternative system, and an economic analysis of initiation systems. Last month, part one (ME, pages 31-35) described current use of initiation systems, incidence of accidents, and consumption values for safety fuse and other initiation systems. Consequences of Fuse Abolishment Cap and Fuse Manufacturers Two major safety fuse manufacturers, Ensign Bickford and Apache Powder Co., share the US fuse market. Marketing of Ensign Bickford safety fuse is done by Dupont. Dupont manufactures electric caps as a main product and recently introduced a new nonelectric initiation system (Detaline). Therefore, Dupont would be only slightly affected by the elimination of safety fuse from metal and nonmetal mining. Ensign Bickford, though a larger manufacturer of fuse, does not appear to emphasize the safety fuse market. In fact, safety fuse sales represent only about 10% of Ensign Bickford's total sales volume. Ensign Bickford is strongly pushing its Nonel product. It appears, therefore, that the elimination of safety fuse would have a limited effect on Ensign Bickford, and could ultimately be to the company's advantage. Apache Powder Co., however, would be seriously affected if safety fuse was eliminated. Safety fuse, although not its only product, constitutes a major source of revenue for the company. It currently does not manufacture a substitute product. Apache Powder Co.'s manager agrees that prohibiting the use of safety fuse would result in a greater market share of initiators for Ensign Bickford. Hercules could also benefit from the prohibition of safety fuse. Metal and Nonmetal Mining Industry According to an explosive company contact, elimination of safety fuse by a mandatory regulation would force some of the small, marginal mines out of business. Another powder company representative believes that eliminating safety fuse will result in uneasy situations for small operators not familiar with other techniques. These operators try to minimize the costs and traditionally like safety fuse. He believes that insufficient proof exists to substantiate the overall safety increase if the fuse is eliminated. Fuse manufacturers and distributors disagree, then, about the impact of safety fuse elimination. However, they tend to agree on some important points: • Safety fuse can be a safe method if applied properly. • Electric blasting can be dangerous due to stray currents, and may have higher misfire rates than safety fuse. • It is very difficult to compare the rate of misfires and partial round failures for different systems. This is due simply to the nonavailability of such data. In many cases, the misfires are not even reported to the shift boss, as required by regulations. • Safety fuse has high acceptance in certain applications, such as a face where Nonel or detonating cord are used, or in open-pit blasting. • The safety fuse industry appears to be phasing out on its own. It is expected that the fate of the safety fuse market will be similar to that of black powder. An investigation by Nitro Noble of Sweden "clearly states that the diminishing use of safety fuse has considerably reduced the accidents in Swedish mines." Mine Data Acquisition and Analysis As a part of the study effort, visits were arranged to 24 metal and nonmetal mines. In most cases, underground visits were accomplished. At least one drilling and loading operation was witnessed. The mines were grouped into four mining areas: Wyoming, Montana, Idaho; western Colorado and eastern Utah; Missouri; and southern Arizona. Of all mines visted, the safety fuse system was used in 11 mines, electrical system in seven, Nonel in five, and the Hercudet system in one surface mine. At each mine, the manager, foreman, and blasting crew were interviewed for information and opinions. Besides informal discussions with mine officials, a questionnaire was also filled out for each mine. Due to the extensive length of the information gathered, these data are not presented here.

Minnesota contains a major low- grade copper-nickel sulfide resource within the Duluth Gabbro Complex. Several companies have actively explored this resource. Open pit mining would be required to develop portions of the resource, and as a result, large quantities of sulfide-bearing lean ore and waste rock would be stockpiled. Although the problems associated with high-sulfide tailings and acid mine drainage are well documented, the leaching characteristics of low-grade mineralized stockpiles must be understood for environmental impact assessment, siting, and planning. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and AMAX have cooperated in a research program to study leaching and revegetation -of test stock- piles, Six small (1600 'tons) stockpiles were constructed at the MINNAMAX Project Site and they range in composition from 0.29 to 043 g % copper, 0.075 to 0.09% nickel, and 0.6 to 1.45% sulfur. Two of the stockpiles were covered with mineral soil, one was covered with topsoil, and three were not treated Revegetation plots were established on the piles which received a soil cover. Leachate samples and flow measurements were collected at the base of the piles. Initial results indicate that metal concentrations in leachate samples range from 10 to 10,000 times the concentrations found in the streams of the area. During the first growing season, the test pile covered with topsoil yielded 30% less water than untreated test piles. No reduction in yield was observed for the piles that were covered with the less fertile mineral soil. First-year vegetative growth, expressed as biomass, was four times greater on the-topsoil pile than on the mineral soil piles. The long-term effects of vegetation on leachate quantity and quality continue to be investigated.

"Sepiolite is a magnesium-rich, porous, and fibrous clay mineral with broad applications. These applications take advantage of sepiolite’s high specific surface area and unique nano-sized channel structure. Over the past years, numerous materials and techniques based on the structure and property of sepiolite have been developed. This article reviewed the recent achievements in developments and applications of sepiolite in environmental protection, catalysis area, and nanocomposites. The prospectives of sepiolite applications is also discussed. INTRODUCTION Sepiolite is a magnesium-rich, porous, and fibrous clay mineral. The typical chemical formula of sepiolite is Si12Mg8O30[OH]4[OH2]4·8H2O [1]. Sepiolite has a high specific surface area and nano-sized channels because of its special structure [2]. This unusual crystal structure projected onto the [001] plane is shown in Fig.1 [3]. As it can be seen, silicon and oxygen atoms make up for the tetrahedral structure and magnesium and oxygen atoms form octahedral structure, respectively. Those tetrahedral-octahedral-tetrahedral ribbons expand boundlessly in one direction, leading to the special fibrous structure of the sepiolite. Every tetrahedral-octahedral-tetrahedral ribbon is combined to the next by an inverted Si–O–Si bond, which causes an interlaced layer with a continuous tetrahedral sheet and a discontinuous octahedral sheet. Terminal MgO at the edges of the ribbons is coordinated with two structural water molecules, which can form hydrogen bonds with zeolitic water molecules that are located in the channels running parallel to the fiber axis [3,4]. The Mg2+ ions inside the channels can be exchanged with other cations in solution. Therefore, sepiolite can be used to remove metal cations from aqueous solutions [5,6].It can be seen from Figure. 1 and Table 1 [7], the unique structure endows sepiolite with a substantial surface area and nanoscale channels. Its specific surface area reaches 320 m2/g and channel dimensions up to 3.7×10.6 Å. There are three active adsorption sites on the surface of sepiolite: one is oxygen atoms of the Si-O tetrahedron. The second is the structural water molecules paired with magnesium ions at the edges of the ribbons, which can form hydrogen bond with adsorbent. The last one is the Si-OH groups due to the breaks of the Si-O-Si bonds on the surface of Si-O tetrahedron. Thus, sepiolite has strong adsorption ability which has been widely used in environmental protection. Moreover, sepiolite has many significant features such as good mechanical and thermal stability, rheological property, porous, and easily modification, making it be a hotspot in chemical and biological researches. However, with the development of technology, broader and more advanced applications of sepiolite have been carried out in recent years. In this study, the recent achievement in sepiolite applications is summarized, the further tendency is also discussed."

The Bureau of Mines investigated pegmatite and granite formations at Copper Mountain, Fremont County, Wyoming, for recovery of tantalum and niobium. Sampling of surface exposures identified about 1.27 mega tonne of pegmatite resource material ranging between 0.02 and 0.04% Ta20, and 0.007% Hb20,. Beneficiation studies were conducted involving coarse-grained and fine grained pegmatite samples. Over 80% recovery of the coarse-grained tantalite was achieved in a concentrate averaging over 45% combined tantalum-niobium oxide. Lower concentrate grades and recoveries resulted from the treatment of fine-grained pegmatite.

This article presents a customized genetic algorithms (GA) with new crossover and mutation operators to solve the short-term production scheduling problem of multi-mine mineral value chains (MVC). The preceding problem consists of determining the extraction sequence and destination allocation of blocks from all the mines collaboratively while closely meeting the quality and quantity requirements of the processing units subject to relevant technical and operational constraints. The short-term production scheduling is carried out at shorter scales wherein the operations are modeled in a great detail with large number of constraints. This makes the industry-scale instances of the problem computationally intractable for standard mixed-integer programming (MIP) solvers. Thus, a GA-based heuristic approach is developed to obtain nearoptimal solutions to the large-scale instances of the problem in a reasonable amount of computational time. Computational experiments show that the developed GA-based method is a promising way to handle industry-scale instances of the problem. Moreover, the sensitivity analysis on various parameter combinations of crossover and mutation operators indicates that the customized global mutation operator, when used in combination with the customized crossover operators, took on average 12.5% less time than the customized local mutation operator to converge to a solution.

The cleaning of coal by the use of jigs is one of the oldest methods of separating coal from its impurities. Although in many situations jigs have been replaced by other methods, by far the largest percentage of coal today is still being cleaned by some form of jigs. Some piston- or plunger-type jigs are still in use throughout the world; however, the greater number are air pulsated, generally called the Baum jig, named after the original inventor, Fritz Baum of Germany. This standard jig, with slight modifications, has been in use for over 75 years. Up until recently, however, it has had certain limitations in obtaining the high performance and efficiencies required in modern coal preparation practice. TO improve its performance, some radical modifications have been made in its design and operation SO that there is now a Baum-type jig giving much higher performance in terms of capacity, efficiency and sharpness of separation- This new jig is called the Batac, and the purpose of this paper is to describe its characteristics and present data giving its performance in treating coarse and fine sizes of coal.

Water conservation and compliance strategy can be cause for success or failure of a new or existing mining operation. Water accounting at outset, and pit and waste dump planning, may not fully consider total inflows, or sediment loads encountered during mine life. Environmental impact assessments, and permitting often dictates the rules, and these may change, to be more stringent, during course of mine development. This paper will identify techniques to control unprojected fresh water, or increased surface water flows in surface mine operations.

In-situ mining of hard rock deposits will only become successful as we understand the engineering parameters involved and the design limitations they impose. As recognized by Wadsworth1 the most critical area is the enhancement of permeability in a hard rock mass. Along with creating permeability, the appropriate flow and fragment size conditions must be generated to insure economic rates of mineral recovery. In this article our interest is confined to true in-situ processes in which boreholes are drilled from the ground surface or a mine drift to deeper strata. We assume that fractures and permeability enhancement will be due to explosives detonated in boreholes. Other techniques such as hydraulic fracturing do not produce the necessary size distribution to promote economic extract ion rates unless the medium is already highly fractured and interconnected. Notable exceptions where hydraulic fracturing is applicable are many oil, gas and salt deposits. For many in-situ processes, an array of explosive charges offers the opportunity of creating a distribution of many fractures not achievable by other techniques. Such a situation would be suitable, for example, to in-situ mine hard rock gold, uranium, copper or oil shale deposits and may enhance oil and gas recovery in certain situations. The purpose of our article is to review and extend the explosive permeability theory of McKee and Hanson 3,4,5 and to apply its results to derive design parameters suitable for in-situ mining.

Several factors contributed to continued declines in mineral-exploration activity in the US in 1985. Low metal prices and, what appears to be worldwide chronic excess capacity in copper, molybdenum, lead, and uranium, have resulted in mineral-exploration expenditures remaining anemic. Economic recovery could result in a healthier mining industry and more cash flow to fund exploration. This is because general economic activity and US mining industry activity have historically been closely linked. However, as the worldwide economic recovery has expanded, the mining sector has continued its downward slide. New cuts in industry exploration budgets in 1985 shocked those who thought the exploration situation could not become worse. Some personnel and equipment had been redirected from base metals exploration to precious metals in the past few years. Last year, continued reductions in exploration sent many professionals out of the mining industry. Recent staff reductions or consolidations of operations were made by Noranda, Chevron, Molycorp, and other exploration companies. The latest data from the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) summary of exploration statistics show that professional staff at year end in major US exploration companies (domestic and foreign operations) fell from 2355 in 1981 to 1868 in 1983 and 1277 in 1984. By the end of 1985, two economic trends were established that could improve the future profitability of mining and hence exploration. First, the price of crude oil began a decline. If sharply reduced energy prices increase worldwide economic expansion, the substantial excess capacity in some of the base metals industries could disappear, and prices could improve. Furthermore, if energy price declines reduce mining and processing costs significantly, metals may recapture some lost markets. The decline in oil revenues has already encouraged some oil-producing countries, such as Venezuela, to look toward development of mineral resources to earn foreign exchange for debt repayment. Second, the decline of the dollar by 21% during 1985 could also help US producers meet foreign competition. During 1985, industry restructuring continued as many oil companies sold off mining subsidiaries and minerals properties. Gold, silver in new discoveries Precious metals continued to dominate the announcement of new discoveries and exploration projects in 1985. A review of domestic exploration and development activities reported in several industry journals shows that 60% to 80% of these projects were directed primarily at precious metals, particularly gold. Base metals exploration activities frequently involved polymetallic deposits with gold or silver values. Because much of this exploration was done on identified targets (on-property exploration), the decrease in wildcat or grassroots (off-property) exploration may be more substantial than indicated by reductions in total exploration activity. Significant gold discoveries in 1985 included several in Nevada, among them the Genesis property of Newmont (near the Carlin mine), Goldfields' discovery of the Chimney deposit in Humboldt Co., and Freeport's discovery of two mineralized sites near Jerritt Canyon. Gold exploration continued to be focused in the western US and Alaska, but gold production starts at the Haile mine in South Carolina, and the Ropes mine in Michigan as well as Amselco's feasibility studies on deposits near Ridgeway, SC, are evidence that gold exploration is not limited to the West. The dominance of gold projects in exploration is not limited to the US, as demonstrated by gold dis¬coveries and exploration projects in Australia, Brazil, Canada, the Caribbean region, China, Guinea, Ivory Coast, South Africa, the South Pacific islands, and Thailand. From the standpoint of US metal miners, it is perplexing that worldwide exploration and development is also taking place in copper, zinc, tungsten, and other metals with depressed prices. During 1985, the US Geological Survey's efforts to map the sea floor of the Exclusive Economic Zone shifted from the Pacific Coast to the deep water areas of the Gulf of Mexico and to areas off the coast of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. An atlas containing sea-floor maps of the west coast area was published as US Geological Survey Miscellaneous Investigations Series Map 1-1792. Results of the 1985 surveys are expected to be published by January 1987. Exploration trends - Statistical evidence Data from the SEG showed continued decline in the US mining industry's exploration expenditures through 1984. The share of US companies' domestic exploration expenditures directed toward base and precious metals has increased from 51% to 84% from 1980 to 1983 and to 86% in 1984. US mining companies spent about $0.67 of each exploration dollar in 1984 in the US. However, this represents an increase from earlier years. The 1983 data also show that firms spending more than $5 million on exploration accounted for 77% of exploration expenditures. The authors have previously described a method of enhancing the magnetic susceptibility of pyrite by a mild alkaline oxidative pressure leach (Hall et al, 1985). This finding was successfully applied to enhance the magnetic desulfurization of an Eastern Canadian coal (Hall and Finch, 1984). This paper reports on enhancement of the magnetic susceptibilities of iron-containing sulfides (arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite and marcasite) upon similar treatment. It also explores the application of this pretreatment in the magnetic separation of fine sulfides from oxides and other sulfide minerals. In the latter case galvanic interference effects have a serious impact on the potential use of this method.

Gemcom PCBCTM is a software package which has been developed over the last 22 years for the planning and scheduling of block cave mines. This paper presents an update of the various research and development activities done to PCBC recently. It also provides an overview of the current capabilities of the software including tools for both feasibility type studies as well as tools for operating mines. PCBC is used extensively by prospective and operating block cave mines and some of the recent applications are described.

It is estimated that the volume of low -level and intermediate level contaminants present in the soil at different DOE sites is of the order of several million cubic feet. The existing remediation scheme is containerization followed by burial in Land Disposal Facilities (LDF's) which is economically unattractive warranting the need to develop alternate remediation routes. One such route is the physical separation based volume reduction approach to removing a MINIMUM AMOUNT OF CLEAN SOIL with the radioactive particles, reducing the amount of material that requires disposal. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and test the feasibility of using physical beneficiation techniques for removal of contaminants from soil. The performance criterion was to recover at least 80% of the activity in 20% or less of the original contaminated soil volume. Four different radioactively contaminated (primarily uranium and plutonium) soils from DoE sites namely LANL, INEL, Fernald Plant 1 Storage Pad (ID-B) and Mound soils were tested using gravity, magnetic, gravo-magnetic, hydrocyclonic and flotation devices. The paper is divided into the two sections. The first section presents the overview of the Heavy Metals in Contaminated Soil Treatability Project conducted at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) describing the salient features of a state-of-the art Soil Washing Laboratory and the technology equipments used in the test program. The second section describes the soil characterization and typical volume reduction results obtained from the UNR tests. Among the physical separation processes, only flotation processes passed the performance criterion. For the LANL and INEL soils where the contamination was contained in coarse particle size, it was possible to recover more than 80% of the activity in less than 10-20% of the original volume of the soil thus rendering 80-90% of the soil "clean". For Fernald and Mound soils where contamination was of colloidal nature, flotation based processes showed encouraging results and are recommended for further studies.

In a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Department of Energy, laboratory column-flotation tests were conducted to evaluate fluorosurfactants as selective fine coal flotation collectors. A Middle Kittaning seam coal responded to flotation with both anionic and nonionic fluorosurfactants. These fluorosurfactants were no more selective than MIBC alone. However, for increasing coal yields, nonionic fluorosurfactant systems did not increase total sulfur and ash contents as sharply as MIBC systems. Flotation selectivity also improved slightly when a combined anionic fluorosurfactant-MIBC system was used in acidic pulps (pH < 3.6). While the fluorosurfactants examined will not likely have direct application in current coal flotation practice, other fluorosurfactant systems could eventually prove beneficial for floating fine coals.

As part of an overall laboratory and plant test program to determine mixing and other techniques relating to the more economic use of bentonite as an iron ore pellet binder, a settling test was developed for measuring the bentonite content within a pellet or within a batch of pellets. Between pellet batches, each containing a different level of bentonite, the dry fracture load is directly proportional to the bentonite content between pellets of the same batch, however, the fracture load is inversely proportional to the bentonite level; this is explained by a negative correlation between a pellet&apos;s size and its bentonite content and the fact that larger pellets can withstand a higher fracture load than the smaller.

The Bureau of Mines investigated a simultaneous elutriation and flotation technique for separating polyethylene terephthalate (PET) from polyvinylchloride (PVC). The Tuscaloosa Research Center, through a cooperative agreement with a recycling company, devised an elutriation-flotation method for beneficiating the mixed heavy plastics portion of municipal solid wastes which is composed of polystyrene (PS), PET, and PVC. A sodium carbonate brine was used to remove the lighter PS from the heavier PET and PVC. Over 98 pct of the PS was recovered in a high purity PS concentrate containing 99.7 pct PS, The remaining PET and PVC mixture was washed to remove the brine salts that would be harmful to the flotation process. The clean PET and PVC mixture was conditioned in a solution of 45 g/t gelatine and floated in a short (l-m) column flotation cell in an upward flow of water. In a single flotation step, over 75 pct of the PET was recovered in a high purity product containing 99.8 pct PET. The bubbles attached to the PET lowered the effective density of the PET-bubble agglomerate and allowed successful separation of these agglomerates from the PVC plastic pieces. This method separated two-thirds of the mixed plastics fraction into high purity PS and PET products suitable for recycling and left only one-third of the plastics in the mixed plastics product.

Diasporic bauxite from the Mugla-Milas region was mechanically activated in a planetary mill for different activation times and the structural changes were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and specific surface area analysis (BET ? Burnauer, Emmett and Teller). Non-activated and activated bauxite samples were leached directly in alkaline (Na2O) solution at atmospheric conditions and the activation procedure led to the amorphization and structural disordering of the diasporic bauxite structure, which increased the dissolution efficiency. Effects of milling speed, liquid/bauxite ratio and leaching time on alumina extraction in direct alkaline leaching of diasporic bauxite were also studied. The carbothermic reduction of celestite is the first step in producing many strontium products. The way materials move in the rotary kiln has an essential effect on the carbothermic reduction efficiency as well as the temperature. In this study, the reduction of celestite ore and excess carbon blend in a laboratory-scale rotary kiln was investigated. In the experiments carried out at three different temperatures, the rotational speed and slope of the furnace tube were altered, and their effects on the reaction efficiency were examined. The leachability of the reduced powders and the content of the unburned coke indicated the optimal parameters for the reaction.When the speed was increased to 10 rpm, the powders weremoremobile in the stack and could react more easily with the furnace atmosphere. According to the results, celestite can be reduced by carbon at temperatures of 1000–1200 °C, at rates of between 5% and 75%.
