High purity MgO is widely used in various fields as an important magnesiumcompound. The separation of Mg and Ca is of great importance for the preparation of high purity MgO from dolomite. In this study, the key effects of carbonization temperature and nano-calcium carbonate agglomeration on the separation mechanism of calcium and magnesium have been investigated. The results indicated that the reaction in the carbonization process was stepwise. Precise control of the carbonization temperature was essential for the formation of Mg(HCO3)2 due to its low reaction efficiency at lower temperatures or decomposition markedly at higher temperatures. Meanwhile, there was a common-ion effect in solutions containing Mg2+ and Ca2+. Nano-CaCO3 particles were formed during carbonization and agglomerated with the prolongation of static time. A product with a purity of 99.56% MgO and 0.16% CaO was obtained under the optimized conditions: ratio of liquid–solid 30 L/g, carbonization temperature 22–25 °C, carbonization time 1 h, and refining time 4 h. This work has important guiding significance for the preparation of high purity magnesium oxide from dolomite.

As the 2016 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., I am pleased to present the 2016 issue of the Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration Inc., Vol. 340. A significant portion of the contribution that we make as a professional society is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable the transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, PA, that resulted in the founding of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME). Those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume fulfills that pledge. The 2016 Transactions contains some of the most interesting research and insights from the past year and features an international slate of authors spanning industry, academia and government. Papers include the latest findings from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and special-issue articles on process development testing. The 2016 Transactions consists of a total of 65 technical papers, encompassing all 21 papers published in 2016 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering (Vol. 68) and all 27 papers published in 2016 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 33). Additionally, this volume contains 17 papers that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All of the technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our publications staff. As the 2016 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

This paper will describe the copper concentrate slurry pipeline and pumping system between the concentrator and the port at Bougainville Copper Ltd. The operations of Bougainville Copper Ltd. are located on the island of Bougainville in the South Pacific. Geographically, it is the northernmost island of the Solomon Group but, politically, it is part of Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is a United Nations Trust territory administered by Australia, having recently been given self-government, with independence scheduled for December 1974. (Fig. 1). The island is approximately 130 miles long by 30 miles wide, with the Crown Prince mountain range forming a spine along its length. The mountains in place are over 8,000 feet high with the mine located on the western flank at an elevation of 2,200 feet. Exploration on Bougainville for copper by Conzinc Riotinto of Australia (CRA) began in 1963 and by 1968, through geophysical, geochemical and diamond drilling methods, an orebody containing nearly one billion tons of ore grading approximately 0.48% Cu. and sane gold had been outlined. Bougainville Copper Ltd., the company operating the mine, is 53.6% wined by CRA, 20% mined by the government of Papua New Guinea with the public Folding the remainder of the shares. Lynn lake, Manitoha, where Sherritt has operated a copper-nickel mine since 1954, is located north of the 56th parallel approximately SOO miles north of Winnipeg. Sherritt's new, 3,000 tpd, copper-zinc Fox Mine is situated 30 miles southwest of Lynn lake. This paper focuses on the Fox Mine concentrator, hut first some background information. Sherritt Gordon Mines Limited started mining operations as a copper-zinc producer in 1931 at Sherridon, Manitoba, 150 miles south of Lynn Lake. As Sherridon fizzled out development of a series of nickel-copper orebodies commenced at Lynn Lake. The Forward process was developed to treat the nickel concentrate from the Lynn concentrator. Sherritt's ammonia leaching process is now history and is expected to gain more prominence as pressure is applied to the mining industry for closer environmental control. But few are aware of the fact that the present Lynn Lake crushing plant and concentrator were dismantled in the autumn of 1951 and freighted from Sherridon by tractor train during the winters of 1952 and 1953. The copper-zinc orehody at Fox Mine was discovered early in 1961 by geophysical methods which included both airborne and ground surveys. It is part of a ,large body of massive and semi-massive sulphides consisting chiefly of pyrite; with chalcopyrite, sphalerite (containing 7-9% iron) and pyrrhotite in varying proportions which occur within a series of volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The total mineralized zone is a lenticular body with a minimum average length and width of 1,350 feet and 66 feet respectively, to the explored depth of 2,000 feet. The average sulphide content is 67%. Higher zinc zones are masses of pyrite grains cemented by sphalerite with lower than average copper content. Zones higher in copper and lower in zinc are slightly more quartzose. Gold and silver are present in small amounts roughly proportional to the copper content.

As a result of several recent methane/dust ignitions in surface auger and highwall mines, the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the occurrence of methane gas at these operations. Three mine sites were visited in western Kentucky and one in western Pennsylvania to collect run-of-mine coal samples for gas content determination using the modified-direct-method (MOM). Results indicate the samples emitted small quantities of methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. Either methane or nitrogen was the predominant gas released. The same gases were released after crushing the samples for residual gas content; however, nitrogen was the primary component of this fraction. Total ~as contents ranged from less than 0.01 cm /g to 0.54 cm3/g. The hydrocarbon gases probably originated during coalification. Other gases may have originated partially as a byproduct of coalification and partially as a result of other, near-surface processes. The data suggest that although methane quantities are small, desorption could occur at near surface conditions prior to mining. The desorbed methane could accumulate as a free gas in fractures in the coal bed or roof rock. When these fractures are penetrated by the auger, methane could rapidly enter the whole atmosphere possibly creating explosive conditions.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study undertaken to demonstrate the feasibility of using silica sand as a grinding media in stirred ball mills for ultra-fine coal grinding. Laboratory batch as well as bench scale continuous tests indicate that the use of silica sand can reduce the energy consumption by 50% and more over its steel media counter-part. Moreover, this approach has been found to eliminate the disadvantages observed with grinding using steel media such as high replacement cost, contamination of coal through media wear, greater degree of coal oxidation due to higher slurry temperature and greater level of noise dissipation. Additionally, coal-sand attrition system reduces the manpower time required which is often spent towards cleaning and storing of steel media in inert atmosphere to avoid rust and corrosion problems.

Gentlemen, my subject today is glass reinforced plastics. By definition, this encompasses a wide variety of materials: at least a half dozen basic varieties of polyester, epoxy, and phenolic; virtually infinite compounding variations within the basic groups: literally limitless variations in the amount and the nature of the glass reinforcing. Complicating all of this is the fact that different modes of application of the same material fall appreciably alter' the product's general strength and suitability. These many, many differing materials are what we conveniently call "glass reinforced plastics" or, more simply, fiberglass". This common name is actually a large part of the problem when dealing with fiberglass materials. Far too often a specification is written calling for simply "fiberglass reinforced polyester', based on successful prior use of a polyester laminate. Such a specification is very nearly worthless since such tremendous variation is possible under it. Success of a laminate furnished under such a specification is entirely dependent on good fortune

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Explosive Excavation Research Office (EERO) of Livermore, California, has been engaged in research and development of excavation techniques using both nuclear and conventional explosives since 1962. Prior to July 1971, this organization was designated the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Nuclear Cratering Group. The EERO mission is performed as part of the joint Atomic Energy Commission -Corps of Engineers nuclear excavation research pro-gram. During the period 1962-1969, the Corps executed many cratering explosions using spherical charges of up to 85 tons of nitromethane to model nuclear excavation concepts and to develop design criteria for the nuclear cratering explosions. The experience gained in these modeling tests suggested that explosive excavation using large chemical explosive charges could be applied to excavation projects as an economical substitute for traditional excavation techniques. Consequently, the Corps' research program was broadened in 1969 to include development of chemical explosive excavation as a construction tool. The term "explosive excavation" denotes the use of large buried explosive charges to produce an excavation by fracturing the material and casting it into a desired configuration. In its simplest form, this technology involves detonation of a single explosive charge buried at the proper depth to produce a crater which is roughly hyperbolic in cross section. The types of craters produced by various depths of burial are illustrated by Figure 1. Single or Multiple rows of charges are used to excavate linear cuts required for water conveyance or navigation channels. .More complex explosive excavations include small craft harbors, railroad and highway cuts, and removal of W1denvater rock barriers to navigation. "Horizontal stress can have a profound effect on the stability of an underground limestone mine. The presence of horizontal stress is usually determined once the mine has been developed and the orientation of headers and crosscuts are well established. Multiple attempts are typically made to control roof falls without re-orienting the mine. Once the decision has been made to change the orientation, pillar centers, mine opening widths, and the question of how to determine the correct orientation must be answered.A case history is presented to illustrate how geologic structure, ground conditions and roof falls in adjacent mines, the World Stress Map (Heidbach et al., 2016), in-mine measurement of “cutter” roof orientation, the orientation of strata offset (cats eyes) within borescope holes, and the diametral deviation method of determining horizontal strain from drill core were used to establish the most likely range of horizontal stress.The main headers were re-orientated in a direction parallel to the median of the range of horizontal stress. The crosscuts were angled 60° to the headers to avoid being perpendicular to the horizontal stress direction. Pillar centers and opening widths were increased in the favorable stress direction of the mains and decreased in the less favorable crosscut orientation. The major principal horizontal stress magnitude was estimated using the strain measurements from the diametral deviation method and elastic modulus obtained through testing.INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, there has been a significant increase in the number of underground stone mining operations in the United States. As stripping ratios at surface quarries become uneconomical and reach the extent of the mineral boundary, coupled with the encroachment of urban development on previously rural mining operations, the remaining mine reserves are best accessed through underground development.Although the majority of underground limestone mines in the Midwest are in relatively flat lying deposits with minimal geologic structure, many Appalachian mines are in folded and faulted environments. Tectonic horizontal stresses associated with multiple orogenic episodes are locked in the formation and are released as the underground mine is developed.A common misconception is that horizontal stress impacts are more prevalent at shallow depths where the ratio of horizontal to vertical stress may be high. However, field observations and academic research indicates that horizontal stress conditions may be encountered at any depth due to the tectonic compression of the limestone formation (Esterhuizen et al., 2007; Dolinar and Esterhuizen, 2007; Iannacchione et al., 2003; Slaker, Murphy, and Miller, 2017; Kuhnhein and Ramer, 2004). This paper outlines mine design and layout guidelines for the mitigation of horizontal stress impacts on underground stone mining operations through a case history example. This approach to mine planning and the ability to anticipate horizontal stress can significantly improve future production of multiple levels (Newman and Newman, 2019). As underground stone production continues at deeper depths and in more geologically and geometrically complex mining conditions, an emphasis on ground control and the anticipation of horizontal stress can provide safer and more productive single and multiple level mining operations."

Automation is a word whose meaning has been broadened by popular usage to include any labor saving device. We with restrict our usage to the replacement of human judgement by instrumental measurement and mathematical analysis in the control of industrial processes. Mineral concentration is an area which has resisted automation because of the great difficulty in developing measuring instruments which can exist in the rugged environment and can measure useful properties with acceptable accuracy. This is not the only factor limiting progress, but until recently it has been of over-whelming importance. The development of on-stream X-ray analysers, magnetic flowmeters and nuclear density meters for mineral slurries has eliminated this obvious barrier and is enabling us to locate and attack the less obvious problems which still limit our ability to automate concentrators. If we examine the history of automation in industries which are highly automated we find that it has usually gone through three distinct phases. The first phase has been regulation. This is the simplest form of control and involves manipulating some variable whose value is of no importance in order to maintain the value of some other variable which is important at a constant specified value in spite of disturbances which may occur in other variables which affect it. A simple example is the use of a control valve to maintain a constant flow of fluid in a line in spite of changes in pressure in the vessels at the ends of the line. The stress-relief method for the determination of the ground stress tensor is a common procedure in rock mechanics. In particular, the method of applying gauges to the end of a borehole is a well-established technique. Investigations, both experimental and theoretical, indicate that large discrepancies can exist in the determination of the ground stress tensor when the rock substance is not the ideal elastically isotropic material assumed for the reduction of data. The purpose of this paper is to extend the analysis of strain gauges applied to the end of a borehole to rock material more closely approximate to an orthotropic substance.

Dravo Lime Company has opened a new 290m (940 ft.) deep lime-stone mine near Maysville, Kentucky. As the mine was opened there were many unknowns as to the stress relationships within the rock, and their influence, if any, on the selected mining method. Therefore, a system of overlay geologic and structural maps, borehold extenso-meter measurements, and oriented photography was developed for the purposes of monitoring the internal structural relationships of the rock mass. This paper presents a description of the methods used, the observations made, and the conclusions and recommendations made as a result of the initial monitoring program.

Between 2005 and 2021, surface mining haul trucks were involved in 54 fatal incidents in the United States [1]. Collision warning and avoidance systems (CXS) can help haul truck operators navigate their route safely. The evaluation of CXS object detection performance for surface mining haul trucks relies on the positional accuracy of the ground truth instrument. As part of a holistic approach, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) characterized the accuracy of a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) that serves as the ground truth instrument to determine object position and velocity in CXS object detection performance testing. We used precision surveying equipment to establish ground truth points for comparison with GNSS data collected for static positional measurements and reduced-scale straightline vehicle dynamic tests. We conducted these tests with real-time kinematics (RTK) and then satellite-based augmentation systems (SBAS). For the dynamic tests, we measured a distance error of 1.34 m (4.40 ft) using RTK and 1.50 m (4.92 ft) using an SBAS. This research will provide CXS manufacturers and CXS researchers a basis for evaluating the positional accuracy of CXS. Note that we did not evaluate any CXS in this experiment.

In today’s challenging mining environment, everyone is focused on minimizing cost per ton. With haulage costs approaching up to 45% of the overall mining costs, and loader performance driving production, optimizing payload on the truck is a big opportunity. This paper will focus on technology’s role in loaders achieving the truck target payload. There are constantly new innovations in technology, but not everyone uses them correctly. Technology is intended to help achieve the next level of performance, but still requires the right people and processes to effectively utilize the benefits. In today’s mining business, miners, engineers, trainers, supervisors, and managers have ever increasing roles and responsibilities as never seen before in past decades. Technology can make these roles more efficient, but fully relying on the technology can detract from optimization. Sometimes the old-fashioned method of loading to a consistent pass match will provide a lower cost per ton. Before blindly trusting your technology feedback, know these three areas discussed in this paper: (1) Prerequisites to utilize technology in payload management; (2) Types of payload management technology; (3) How to use the data to manage operator behavior. The objective of this paper is to provide low-cost recommendations to efficiently increase production. INTRODUCTION Whether miners claim to have been around and experienced it all, or they are the data-driven new generation on the mine site, miners are expected to execute the mine plan at the lowest cost possible. So why is it so difficult to execute this task? Shouldn’t supervisors just have to staff the equipment, tell operators to have a safe day and tally up the numbers at the end of the shift? Let the technology system do the rest; what could go wrong? Lots. Having examined numerous mining operations that use the latest loading technologies over the past several years, one common denominator is the opportunity to improve loader operator performance. Mining companies seek help from consultants, training departments, performance reporting systems and an arsenal of resources. Armed with all this information, but the improvements don’t happen, what could have gone wrong? It comes down to people, not managing the resources to drive the right behavior and as a result, the mine’s performance is not where it should be. Understanding how to make “Great Miners” out of these people is critical to this constant struggle to move more with less and get the costs down. Extraction CPT (Cost-Per-Ton) is most sensitive to optimizing loader production which can be generalized into 3 categories of influence: machine specifications, cycle timing, and continuous management using technology. After establishing a basic production machine configuration, utilizing technology to manage cycle times, operator efficiency and payload can be advantageous. Prerequisites to Utilize Payload Management Technology It is important to begin with the primary considerations that enable the use of technology to continuously manage loading productivity. All systems are interdependent in mining, but these are divided into the simplest terms to remember. First, fix your timing and geometry.

Over the last fifty years, the treatment of enargite concentrates has not received much attention, primarily because of the availability of other clean concentrates suitable for processing with existing smelting and/or leaching technologies. As traditional copper ores have become scarcer, copper-arsenic ore deposits have garnered more interest. Arsenic release is a significant concern during the treatment of enargite concentrates by pyro or hydrometallurgical methods. Enargite is also very refractive in standard leaching procedures. Thus, economical treatment options for enargite concentrates are needed. Preliminary experiments have shown that the acid bake-leach process could be adapted and used for the treatment of enargite concentrates. In this study, low-temperature (100-400º C) sulfuric acid baking of an enargite concentrate followed by water leaching has been evaluated. The results indicate the thermal transformation of enargite to copper sulfate happens during sulfuric acid baking, with most of the arsenic being released from the concentrate into the gas phase when baking at 400º C. The condition for maximum copper extraction (~100%) from the concentrate was found to be 400º C, a sulfuric acid concentration of 0.5 mL/g and two hours baking time. Part of the arsenic was captured in the form of arsenopyrite (FeAsS). X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis proved the presence of some arsenic in the form of claudetite (As2O3) in the baked concentrate. Acid baking of pure enargite behaved in a similar fashion.

The Xinglongzhuang Coal preparation plant project was a joint effort by American and Chinese engineers and for the most part designed to American standards. The plant owner and operator is the Yanzhou Coal Mine Administration, a division of the Shandong Coal Corporation. These are state owned companies which ultimately fall under the Ministry of Coal in Beijing. The new 3.0 million ton per year Xinglongzhuang mine is located in southern Shandong province in east-central China about mid-way between Beijing and Shanghai. This is an agriculture area, flat terrain, relatively dry climate with temperatures similar to Western Kentucky. During Confucius time (551-479 B.C.) this area was known as the state of Lu. Confucius home town of Qufu is about 20 kilometers to the north-east of the mine site.

Political risk is an integral part of the mining business in Northern Andean countries. Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela all have a higher than average political risk compared with other South American countries. Successful operations in such contexts require: 1. Good political risk information; 2. A thoroughgoing political risk management plan; and 3. A strategy to deal with political risk perception on the part of the investing public. Obtaining quality political risk information, developing a political risk management plan, and addressing political risk perception are the foci of this work.

Deposits of metals in only slightly disturbed strata have been attributed to sedimentation processes contemporary with deposition of the strata. Recently this origin has been extended' to a greater variety' of deposits and local enrichment has been attributed to selective remobilization of metallic minerals in the host stratum. Effects attending metallization and deformation, and exact age' of the metallization are compiled to establish the sequence of events in ore deposit histories in order to clarify importance of remobilization within a formation relative to introduction from an outside source into an fav¬orable host. The pertinence respectively of deposit; origin and geometry to the work of the mining geologist is reviewed. Dwarf faunas in the Clinton iron ore, Tully pyrite bed and Rammelsberg deposit, indicate abnormal metal ions in the sedimentary environment. Slight¬ly disturbed strata are host rocks in the Swedish Kolm, Timna, Kupferschieffer, and White Pine deposit; the latter two have ore only in conjunction with tectonic structures.

The angular spiral lining system reduces energy consumption and grinding media consumption in grate discharge ball mills. This paper discusses the effect of this lining system on mill product size distribution. Performance comparisons of a grinding circuit outfitted with angular spiral liners in the ball mills are made with respect to standard double-wave liner installations. The angular spiral lining system was developed by Waagner-Biro of Austria. The installation of this lining system at Magma Copper Company, San Manuel, Arizona, is the first of its kind in a grate discharge ball mill used for wet grinding.

Open cast surface mining requires blast hole drilling with many interesting facets in order to achieve mine planning forecasts. Interestingly, no single method or combination of theoretical hypothesis of mining economics is right for all conditions. On occasion mine planners introduce a project with little or no regard to drilling and blasting. Generally, drilling and blasting costs are a significant percentage of total mine overhead. One such drilling and blasting method which can be utilized to reduce overall mine expenditure is inclined or angle hole drilling. One must bear in mind, that angle hole drilling per-se mill not reduce costs, unless a set of required circumstances is met. An attempt will be made to detail when conditions of the mine design criteria dictate the use of angle drilling.
