The methodology used to obtain fly ash subsamples of different sizes is generally based on wet or dry sieving methods. However, the worth of such methods is not certain if the methodology applied is not mentioned in the analytical procedure. After performing a fly ash mechanical dry sieving, the authors compared those results with the ones obtained by laser diffraction on the same samples and found unacceptable discrepancies. A preliminary study of a wet sieving analysis carried out on an economizer fly ash sample showed that this method was more effective than the dry sieving. The importance of standardizing the way samples are handled, pretreated and presented to the instrument of analysis are suggested and interlaboratory reproducibility trials are needed to create a common standard methodology to obtain large amounts of fly ash size fraction subsamples.

Edmonton South LRT is the latest expansion of the Subway system in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada: Consisting of twin 5.8m segmental lined tunnels, 280m long, driven by a Lovat EPB machine. The key challenges were as follows. A 6% downhill grade. Tight radius curves of 250m.Overlying structures within 3m of the tunnel. Strata consisting of sand above the water table, glacial tills and bed rock below the water table. Located within The University of Alberta Campus and adjacent to a hospital. Northern Alberta climate with winter temperatures routinely falling below—minus 30 degrees Celsius. This paper provides a case history and outlines the challenges involved in completing this project.

Construction of the Boddington Mine 130 km (81 miles) southeast of Perth, is about 89 percent complete. When the $2.9-billion development is finished, it will be the largest gold mine in Australia, producing 31 t/a (1 million oz/year), according to project majority owner Newmont Mining. Newmont?s acting regional group executive for Asia Pacific, Philip Stephenson, told a gold conference in Australia that the project would be ?the biggest thing for Newmont this year.? The project has been in the works for more than 10 years, but because of a three-sided ownership and fluctuating gold prices, it struggled to get started. However, Newmont is set to become the full owner of the project and is moving ahead on the low-grade project. ?We are targeting annual production of 31 t/a (1 million oz/year) for each of Boddington?s first five years. When it is in full production, Boddington will be the largest gold mine in Australia,? Stephenson said. ?The mine?s costs applicable to sales will be around US$9.64/g (US$300/oz) and that puts Boddington into the bottom quartile of the global cost curve. ?Strategically for Newmont, Boddington coming on-line will improve Newmont?s overall global geopolitical risk profile as it delivers greater exposure to an AAA-rated country.? Boddington has a projected mine life of 20 plus years. It has current total reserves of 622 t (20 million oz) and rising. Stephenson said Boddington has the largest reserve base of all gold projects in production or those that are about to go into production in A-rated countries or better. And it will be an important asset for many years to come. Newmont will acquire the remaining 33 percent share held by AngloGold Ashanti in a deal that should be concluded in the next two months. In-situ Fourier transform infrared/internal reflection spectroscopy (FT ?IR/IRS) has been extended to study oleate adsorption at a calcite surface. The birefringent and transmission limitations of calcite were overcome by using an appropriately designed optical setup and a near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer. An adsorption isotherm was determined at pH 9.2 and room temperature. Comparison with the fluorite/oleate adsorption isotherm determined by the same technique indicates that oleate abstraction by calcite can be as much as one order of magnitude larger than that by fluorite. Nevertheless, the hydrophobicity of the fluorite/oleate surface is greater for equivalent adsorption densities as indicated by contact angle measurements and flotation results. The monolayer region has been confirmed to be chemisorbed oleate at both calcite and fluorite surfaces. Furthermore, multichannel laser Raman spectroscopy (MLRS) showed that chemisorbed oleate at the fluorite surface undergoes a double-bond reaction with oxygen to form an epoxide/polyether complex. Such a reaction, however, could not be detected at the calcite surface. These phenomena are discussed in terms of the intrinsic surface properties of the mineral systems as well as the adsorption density and the cross-linking/polymerization reaction of the adsorbed oleate film.

Over the past eight years, Phelps Dodge (a subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, Inc.) devoted a significant amount of effort to the development of a suite of processes for the effective hydrometallurgical treatment of copper sulfide concentrates. This effort resulted in the development of high-temperature (>200ºC) and medium-temperature (150° to 165ºC) pressure leaching processes. Specific configurations of both processes have been commercially demonstrated at Phelps Dodge?s facility in Bagdad, Arizona. This paper reviews in detail the chemistry of medium-temperature pressure leaching of copper concentrates and reports on the process development work conducted by Phelps Dodge and others for this technology. This paper is Part I of a four-part series on this technology. Part II covers the development of medium-temperature pressure leaching and direct electrowinning technology; Part III considers the large-scale demonstration of the MT-DEW-SX process at Bagdad, Arizona; and Part IV addresses the development and design of a full-scale commercial application at Morenci, Arizona.

The performance of the grinding circuit, from the initial stages of operation to the present, is discussed. The mill efficiency as measured by the Bond grindability data and the operating work index is presented. The objective has been to produce a sand cyclone overflow containing not more than 6% +65 mesh. However, this has never been attained even at low milling rates. On the other hand, significant improvements in throughput were achieved by instituting some equipment changes and process modifications within the grinding circuit. The latest approach to solving the coarse grind problem is also discussed.

Located on the Wabash River in the central portion of the state, the city of Lafayette, IN is relatively small compared to most cit-ies that incorporate tunnels into their combined sewer overflow (CSO) systems. The original CSO plan for the city was to replace two aging lift stations that were built in the 1950s. The original con-cept was to build a new sewer using conventional cut-and-cover construction to eliminate one of the lift stations ? the Parking Lot Lift Station ? and build a new regionalized one at the location of the Pearl River Lift Station. The initial sewer design was sized just to handle the flow that would eliminate the Parking Lot Lift Station. The planning for this project was being developed as part of the city?s CSO long-term control plan (LTCP) that focused on reducing the overflows from the city?s 14 overflow points. However, during the development of the CSO LTCP, a major industrial user indicated it would be increasing its flows to the system, which required additional conveyance capacity to meet the city?s CSO LTCP. After reviewing the design concepts with city representatives during the planning phase of the project, the mayor indicated that he wanted to minimize impacts to downtown businesses; therefore, trenchless alternatives were considered. The last piece of the puzzle that drove the project away from a small diameter pipeline was discovered during a flow monitoring program to collect flow data for the CSO LTCP project. This study revealed a major restriction in the 100-year-old Pearl River Trunk Sewer, located beneath four active railroad tracks. To eliminate this flow restriction, provide more overflow storage and reduce the impact to local businesses, a new 2.7- to 3.6-m- (9- to 12-ft-) diameter tunnel sewer became the most viable solution.

An Automated People Mover (APM) transit system is planned for the growing Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. The APM will improve passenger movements between the terminals, and provide a link to parking facilities, a new rental car facility, and the planned metro Light Rail. The underground works will include shallow twin bored tunnels, taxiway crossings, and underground stations constructed beneath critical airport facilities. Challenging soft ground conditions will require extensive underpinning and ground improvements. Design is underway, and construction is scheduled to begin in 2007 with project completion in 2015. The owner’s planned delivery method for the APM Project will be Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) with a Guaranteed Maximum Price.

Efficient separation of trace muscovite from the surface/interface of quartz grains was accomplished during oxidizing calcination and catalytic pressure leaching of the hydrothermal quartz. Experimental results suggest that 98.97% or more of the muscovite was separated when quartz sand was calcined at 900 °C for 5 h and then leached by hydrochloric acid and ammonium chloride solutions as substitutes for leaching agents containing fluorides. The chemical processing techniques show high selectivity in purifying quartz sand by transforming mineral muscovite into active structures during oxidizing calcination, and then dissolving the active substances during catalytic pressure leaching

This paper provides updates to the paper published by the lead author at RETC 2011 with a summary of developments in technologies, products, and approaches to corrosion analyses of gravity sewer tunnels and microtunnels. This paper presents approaches in evaluating degradation of reinforced concrete liners. Also, the carbon footprint of conventional concrete liners and alternative “green” liners are compared and their life cycle costs are considered. A few case histories from the past decade are provided indicating the latest and emerging trends in liner protection.

Although once fairly common as a method of coal preparation in the United States, dry cleaning has virtually disappeared. Low-rank coals used for power generation in the western U.S. are suited for dry cleaning because water has limited availability in the American west. Surface moisture added through wet cleaning offsets energy improvement achieved from mineral matter reduction. Information will be presented on the commercial application of dry cleaning in North America, the historic development and current status of the technology, and the introduction of modern processing theory and control technology to the design of dry cleaning equipment and plants.

This concept paper is presented in the hope of raising the awareness of mankind on the necessity for its peaceful coexistence with nature. It is a food for thought. It takes compromise and sacrifice of people, who will have to learn to curb their greed and move toward a more organic form of prosperity. A nature-friendly sustainability is first step toward the protection of nature that is critical to the mutual survival of mankind and nature. People need the resources from the finite earth to survive and nature needs the prevention of human destruction in order to continue to regenerate and provide. The contemporary notion of sustainability is self-serving. It serves the interest of industry by camouflaging itself to look like nature?s protector. The ?sustainability? concept presented in this paper aims to extend the longevity of the utilization of the limited natural resources for many generations to come. It is an important, responsible first step in creating a healthy sustainability concept that, when implemented, extends the longevity of mankind by the most efficient use of the finite resources on this limited Planet Earth, all the while taking into consideration the increase in anthropogenic activities due to exponential human population growth. This new definition of ?sustainability? has completely different characteristics than its contemporary versions. Nature has its own destiny, rules and principles. Being a part of nature, human society depends on it for survival and must play by its rules and never the other way round as in its initial pretensions. Society should not try to humanize nature, but rather to respect the rule of the nature in a peaceful way of co-existence. When implemented, this new concept of sustainability aims to affect the designs of engineered structures and revolutionize the recovery methods and processing of natural resources, such as mineral resources in the most efficient manner. Finally, this paper intends to stimulate critical thinking and initiate serious discussions aiming at producing a general consensus for the best definition for human society to not only enrich, but to extend its existence. The upgrading project for two hydropower plants in Slovenia, Europe, requires two new pressure tunnels: Plave II (5.9 km Flysch) and Doblar II (3.6 km Limestone). It is the worldwide largest application of the Double-Shield TBM technology combined with an extremely thin-walled monoshell honeycomb lining system. The first drive has been completed by end of June 2000 achieving best performances of 50m/d and almost 1,100m/mth. In September 2000 the TBM started the second tunnel without any required adjustments due to geological or other reasons. Another 52m/d have been bored already within one production day of two 8 h shifts achieving a maximum penetration rate of more than 6m/h. The completion of the Doblar drive can be expected by February 2001.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been classified as a carcinogen to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. As a result of its potential carcinogenic nature, DPM exposure is regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Currently, diesel emissions in the workplace are monitored by collecting the aerosol onto filters, which are then sent to a laboratory for thermal-optical analysis using the NIOSH method 5040. This process can take days or even weeks, and workers can potentially be exposed to excessive levels of DPM before the problem is identified. Moreover, the delay involved in getting the loaded filter to the lab inevitably means the loss of some of the more volatile organic carbon. To remedy this delay, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are seeking to develop a field-portable, real-time method for measuring elemental and organic carbons in DPM aerosols. In the current study, the use of mid-infrared spectrometry was investigated. It is believed that mid-infrared spectroscopy is more suitable for use in a real-time field-portable device than thermo-optical analysis methods. This article presents a method for measuring organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in DPM for a broad range of OC/EC ratios. The method has been successfully applied to laboratory-generated and mine samples.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are developing a coal pillar rib rating (CPRR) technique to measure the integrity of coal ribs. The CPRR characterizes the rib composition and evaluates its impact on the inherent stability of the coal ribs. The CPRR utilizes four parameters: rib homogeneity, bedding condition, face cleat orientation with respect to entry direction, and rib height. All these parameters are measurable in the field. A rib data collecting procedure and a simple sheet to calculate the CPRR were developed.

On August, 31, 2006, Tropical Storm Ernesto hit the City of Richmond, Virginia. The Battery Park area was hit particularly hard, as flooding forced an evacuation of the area. A large sinkhole collapsed a sewer line in the Battery Park area, blocking the pipe and causing more serious flooding. This case history describes the fast track design, bidding, and construction of an emergency tunnel to bypass the collapsed sewer. Innovative value engineering, tunneling and shaft sinking methods, and final lining design all contributed to the success of this project. The storm inundated Richmond, Virginia with up to twelve inches of rain in some areas causing widespread flooding and damage. One of the hardest hit areas of Richmond was Battery Park. A major trunk sewer in the Battery Park area collapsed causing local combined sewer and storm-water flooding. The collapsed sewer was an 8'-3" wide by 9'-6" high arch sewer that was constructed in the nineteen twenties and later filled over with municipal solid waste and a soil fill cap to current elevations. A sinkhole was created in the area of collapse approximately sixty feet deep and one hundred feet in diameter causing the existing arch sewer to become blocked. As a result of this blockage contaminated flood waters reached depths in low lying areas in excess of twenty five feet. [ ]

The development of information concerning mesothelioma in South Africa started with the 1959 finding of Dr. J. Christopher Wagner of cases of mesothelioma in persons living in the vicinity or working in crocidolite mines in Cape Province. After more than 40 years, the data from South Africa now provide important insights into the differences in mesothelioma risk associated with different asbestos fiber-types. Three case series reports and one analytical report were reviewed in this session. In total, information on 504 proven cases was presented. There were 28% of cases arising from occupational exposure in mining, 35% from non-mining occupations, 23% from environmental exposures; 14% where no exposure was established and 9% where the exposure was unknown. Among the 129 cases for which occupational exposure and asbestos fiber-type were established, 115 cases were associated with occupational exposure to Cape crocidolite; 1 case associated with occupational exposure to Transvaal crocidolite and 9 cases with occupational exposure to amosite (grunerite asbestos) and 4 cases with occupational exposure to mixed fiber-types. There were no cases associated with chrysotile asbestos. There were 33 cases of environmental mesothelioma linked to Cape crocidolite exposure and 2 to exposure to amosite and crocidolite but none to Transvaal amosite alone or to chrysotile. The evidence shows that amosite is capable of causing mesothelioma but that the major risk in South Africa is associated with Cape crocidolite.

Bob Woolsey was born in 1936 in the state of Georgia and grew up to be a man of great integrity, vitality, wisdom and charm, totally neutral on matters of race, gender, and religion. A true Southern Gentleman in every sense of the word. His passing on July 9, 2008, the victim of an automobile collision, left an empty space in the hearts of his family, and his many friends and colleagues throughout the globe. The posthumous award of the Moore Medal of the International Marine Minerals Society, to Dr. J. Robert Woolsey for Excellence in the Development of Marine Minerals, is a well deserved tribute to this man who spent the last 30 years of his professional career heavily involved in research and development of marine minerals on an international basis. He first came to my attention in Burma in 1979 where, as a newly appointed technical advisor to the United Nations Development Program Offshore Exploration for Tin, I had to fill the shoes of an almost legendary figure "Dr. Bob", who accompanied by his wife Maxine had spent the previous two years initiating the program. Bob had planned to completion the construction in Singapore of a unique drilling vessel the RV Sea Drill, a spud anchored, twin-hulled barge, mounted with a Becker Drill, and designed for sampling alluvial tin deposits in the coastal waters of the Mergui Archipelago in the Andaman Sea, off Tenasserim. He had also designed and built, with the help of his side -kick Bruce Jernigan, a barge mounted dressing plant for reducing and concentrating the drill samples. The adventures of Dr. Bob in transporting the equipment to the drilling site in monsoon weather and the transfer of the drill barge from the Malaysian port of Ranong across the strait to Victoria Point in Burma with a mutinous crew will remain in the hearts and minds of his Burmese colleagues for many a long year. On his return to the States he joined, in 1980, the faculty of the University of Mississippi (UM) as assistant Professor of Geology and Geological Engineering. His prior experience in private industry and the United Nations had focused on marine mineral resources and related environmental engineering projects in Africa, South America, the Mediterranean, the South Pacific as well as south east Asia, working with dredges, mining for alluvial tin, gold, diamonds and industrial minerals. He continued to work in the area of marine minerals at UM, making a name for himself as Director of the Mississippi Mineral Resources Institute (MMRI).

The use of phosphate depressants in the cationic flotation of silica from francolite in the Florida phosphate industry is rarely practiced. The occasional use of gelatinized starch derivatives and pH adjustments to assure a slightly alkaline flotation feed slurry pH have been used in some processing plants to improve selectivity. This paper presents a preliminary laboratory comparison of several potential phosphate depressants for use with the flotation of siliceous phosphates. It was found that starch is ideal for floating fine (-35 mesh) silica from phosphate, while sodium tripolyphosphate may be the best for coarser (+35 mesh) feeds.

Success of the Gold Line Eastside Ex-tension rail tunnels in Los Angeles, CA has prompted the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority?s (Metro) planning new rail lines to include underground alternatives. The Westside Extension Transit Corridor alternatives include up to 27 km (17 miles) of subway to be constructed in soft ground. The routes will require construction in Los Angeles? ?potential methane zone,? which was not considered for subway construction until recently. Slurry face tunnel boring machines (TBM) will likely be specified.
