A study of coal pillar strength at the Beehive Mine in central Utah was done in the 1970s. This study was a cooperative effort by the University of Utah, RE/SPEC, Inc., and the American Coal Company and was funded by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Mine measurements of closure at 117 points and pillar stress using 119 vibrating wire stress gauges were made during retreat mining in this room-and-pillar operation. Laboratory testing for the strength and modulus of 372 coal cylinders up 0.3 m (1 ft) in diameter and 0.6 m (2 ft) in length was also done. Two-dimensional finite element model analyses complemented the study. However, the real world of mining is three-dimensional and in consideration of the significant advances in computing power since the time of the original study, a revisit of the data seemed warranted. In this regard, a novel finite element method was used that allows for the whole-mine analysis of tabular excavations on the kilometer scale and yet enables details to be obtained at pillar walls on the meter scale. The effects of material properties variability in situ and of joints can also be taken into account. Results that compare computed two- and three-dimensional seam-level closures with mine measurements show noticeable differences; three-dimensional results are reasonable, while two-dimensional results overestimate closure by nearly a factor of two.

Most of the projects summarized in this paper are funded under the Bureau's Advancing Metal-Nonmetal Mining Technology program and are part of the in situ mining subprogram coordinated at the Twin Cities Mining Research Center. The borehole mining equipment development, are funded under the Bureau's Advancing Coal Mining Technology program, is essential to accelerated progress in the in situ mining subprogram, and some background information on this concept is included. The initial in situ research projects started in 1971-72 evaluated some of the critical blast design parameters for in situ copper leaching. The present program totals about $1 million per year and includes in-house research projects, cooperative (cost-sharing) projects with the mining industry, and research and development contracts. Two different extraction schemes are under investigation: inplace leaching and borehole (or slurry) mining. The principal commodity targets for the Bureau's improved in situ mining technologies include copper, uranium, coal, and potash. The principal purpose of this paper is to inform the mining industry of the in situ mining research recently completed or being conducted by the Bureau of Mines. In addition the Bureau encourages companies to comment on the program accomplishments as well as offer suggestions on top priority research needs for improving the in situ mining methods described in this paper.

Within the framework of the adaptation of the South-East European Technicentre (Technicentre Sud-Est Européen TSEE), SNCF Voyageurs appointed Pini with the project management mission (MOE) for the design and construction monitoring of a road tunnel. This investment has a dual function: during the site transformation phase, it facilitates the work logistics (and shorten traffic flows); and in the operating phase, it is intended to ease all movements on the site over the long term. This is a limited-length gallery (50 meters) to be performed in conventional excavation below Poniatowski Avenue (Paris 12e). The excavation, crossing the entire width of the boulevard, constitutes a major challenge, given the very low coverage (less than 5.5 m), and the surrounding main infrastructures. The same project mis- sion includes the design of the tunnel accesses, via reinforced-concrete frame structures. The targeted design questions several aspects of its execution framework, and particularly, continuous operation must be guaranteed to the neighboring networks during the works. The installation of an umbrella- pipe all along the excavation profile, the progression in divided sub-sections, and the implementation of a complex monitoring system are hence key elements for limiting and controlling any deformation. An exhaustive 3D finite element modelling was performed, taking into account the detailed phasing of construction (pre-support, excavation in divided section, preliminary support and definitive lining), to dimen- sion the structures, and, overall, to analyze the impacts on the neighboring structures and facilities. During the execution phase (planned for mid-2024), monitoring activities with back-analyses as close as possible to the works are planned.

"It was possible to beneficiate a low-grade iron ore fines sample from Bellary-Hospet, Karnataka, India assaying 56% Fe, 9.1% SiO2 and 5.2% Al2O3 and produce two concentrates, namely, a sinter-grade fines concentrate (43.7% by weight), assaying 63.6% Fe, 2.6% SiO2 and 1.7% Al2O3, and a pellet-grade concentrate (30.7% by weight) assaying 64.7% Fe, 2.9% SiO2 and 1.7%Al2O3. Rejects (25.6% by weight) assayed 32.5% Fe, 27.9% SiO2 and 15.4% Al2O3. The mineralogical characterization indicated that the sample consisted of 69.5% ironbearing minerals (56% hematite, 7.5% martite and 6% goethite-limonite), 12.5% quartz and 15.2% clay, and the rest were minor minerals. Liberation size was found to be in the size range of 25 to 100 µm. The process flow sheet consists of jigs, spirals, grinding and low- and high-intensity magnetic separation of the deslimed feed. IntroductionJSW Steel Ltd is a 10-Mt/a integrated steel plant. To produce 10 Mt/a hot metal requires nearly 16 to 20 Mt/a iron ore fines. The fast depletion of highgrade iron ore fines, increased industrial demand and an increase in iron ore prices have necessitated the exploitation and use of low-grade iron ore fines in the steel-making process after beneficiation. Thus, the beneficiation of low-grade iron ores by removing the associated gangue minerals and enhancing their grade is essential. The use of these iron ore fines in sinter and pellet making has prompted the undertaking of systematic studies on low-grade iron ores.Finely disseminated low-grade iron ores with siliceous impurities have been upgraded by gravity, magnetic and flotation-based processes (Burt, 1994; Svoboda, 1987; Houot, 1983). The processing of low-grade Indian hematite ore containing high levels of alumina-bearing minerals as impurities present separation challenges and pose special problems in martite and magnetite, in association with quartz and clay as the gangue-forming minerals. Alumina is mainly contributed by clay (kaolinite, montmorillonite, illite, alunite), lateritic material and gibbsite; some alumina occurs as solids in iron oxide minerals, namely, goethite and limonite. "Virtually every article you read on safety has a statement to the effect: “It’s obvious that safety pays”. If it is so obvious, why is it so hard to answer these questions? • How does the Maintenance or Operations Manager convince the Plant Manager to spend money from the annual budget for safety improvements? • How does the Plant Manager influence Corporate to prioritize safety improvements? • How does an engineering firm persuade the owner to spend more on design and equipment up front to reduce risk? There are many cultural and structural reasons why it is so difficult to prove the obvious. In my opinion the main culprits are: the almost universally used ‘Low Bid’ process, variations in reporting incident statistics between industries and countries, and, the Generally Accepted Accounting procedures (GAAP) [or International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS)]. Conventional wisdom is it’s smart not to spend more than you need to meet the minimum regulations and maximize production. But buying on price alone often harms people, degrades the environment, and reduces the company’s bottom line. How can this be? You met the minimum safety requirements and saved money by buying on price. Don’t those savings go right to the bottom line? When you buy on price you get minimum quality, minimum compliance and are often backed corner with no reasonable options to rectify the problems that arise from buying on price instead of buying on long term life cycle cost. Culturally few companies actually ‘walk the talk’. It is trendy to have giant billboards at plant entrances proclaiming world class compliance with quality and safety standards. Annual reports are embellished with safety slogans and sustainability statements. Behind the front gates and the glossy annual reports the message is clear: produce or be replaced. Only a few companies go beyond the window dressing and actually endorse, from the top down, continuously improving their safety culture. Those that do embrace safety, show significant performance advantages over their competition that are reflected in their safety, productivity and environmental records and, ultimately their financial statements and share price. Current accounting (and reward) systems make it unlikely financial managers will accept non-conventional approaches to justifying expenditures on safety because they are driven to report “hard” numbers that can be documented and are within the “GAAP or IFRS Rules.” But in reality, accountants quantify soft or intangible costs all the time in their financial statements. Justifying safety investments is greatly enhanced by quantifying what most financial managers would call intangible costs. Government agencies have no problem assigning intangible costs to justify regulations to improve safety. How many times have you heard that the regulation is justified because the cost to industry is X while the benefit to the society is 2 or 3X? How can they say that without including intangible costs? We find it hard to believe these government claims of benefits to society because we have been trained to think about saving hard direct costs to justify investments."

A full-scale geotechnical model of a 15-foot (4.6 m) wide coal mine entry in correlation with computer finite-element analysis (FEA) is being employed at the Bureau of Mines Spokane Research Center for basic research on roof-bolt support systems. Physical and computer modeling of various coal mine roof-bolt reinforcement systems will increase our basic knowledge of how roof supports function. This information, in correlation with computer FEA and underground verification tests, will provide a basis for establishing safer, more cost- effective roof control plans and help establish guidelines for employing fully grouted and conventional bolting systems. The basic rationale for the research, research approach, methods and equipment employed, results to date, and future research plans are described in this paper.

A new suspension electrolysis method has been developed, which enables without any gas or dust pollutants a direct anodic extraction of zinc from zinc sulfide concentrates, while simultaneously oxidizing sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur. The investigations were performed in a laboratory scale electrolytic cell with suspended zinc sulfide concentrate particles with or without graphite powder additions in dilute sulfuric acid electrolyte. By regulating the redox potential of the electrolysis system in combination with some additions, for example [Fe3+/Fe2+, MnO 4/MnO2, MnO 2/Mn2+ or MnO 4/Mn2+], the anodic dissolution reaction of zinc sulfide has been accomplished effectively without evolution of hydrogen sulfide. Under optimum conditions the anodic current efficiency of zinc dissolution ammounted up to 95 %, while sulfide sulfur was converted nearly completly to the elemental form. Purification by removal of sulfur and other impurities gives a zinc sulfate solution suitable for electrolysis to cathode zinc.

Conveyor systems persist in being a source of injuries and fatalities in the mining industry. To reduce these incidents, better methods are needed to enhance the monitoring of probable hazards and improve situational awareness during the normal operation and maintenance of conveyor systems. To address these issues, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) continue to investigate emerging technologies that show the potential to improve miner safety around conveyors. This paper presents a feasibility assessment by NIOSH researchers of a fully integrated, commercially available wireless Internet of Things (IoT) system to improve situational awareness around conveyor systems. Included are discussions of a full-scale laboratory test bed that was designed to simulate a working conveyor system as well as the challenges and successes of integrating the IoT system with the test bed.

It is undoubtedly true. In preparation for this presentation, 193 organizations were asked to describe their mining research efforts. 60% responded, The meaning of "research" was taken in several different ways. The continual efforts of progressive companies to improve themselves were reported as research. We will call this and any effort to solve specific and immediate problems "practical research". The continuing investigation of subjects of long range interest will be called "basic research".

As a Rock Mechanics investigator, the author has, Over his career, attempted to use his best knowledge in developing better rock control fixtures. Based on the experience of nine years of development of friction rock stabilizers, in 1980 he decided to launch a new investigation to develop a unique roof support fixture which would fit the coal mining market. The largest single user of roof bolts in the world is the American coal mining industry, historically using up to 100 million fixtures per year. In 1989 they used approximately 82 million fixtures.

As indoor positioning provides particular challenges due to the unavailability of GPS signals, various systems such as ultrawideband (UWB), radio frequency identification (RFID), ultrasound, and wireless local area network (WLAN) have been proposed in recent years. Some of these technologies are currently being marketed and some are still being developed. UWB technology allows for higher precision while also reducing power consumption. Hence, the underground automation and localization systems can use this technology for more accuracy and robustness. This article discusses new robust UWB modules used for underground positioning and collision avoidance with regard to human safety in underground mining operations.

Grinding with steel media adversely affects the flotation response of galena. Electrochemical measurements, flotation tests, and AES, XPS, and STEM examinations were employed to identify interactions between galena and mild steel. Iron oxide, hydroxide, or sulfate species that formed on the galena surface upon contact with mild steel decreased its floatability, with the time of contact and aeration condition affecting the severity of the flotation depression.. Parallel tests performed with an active metal, magnesium, indicated that floatability was also affected by the presence of a surface coating involving lead species.

A roasting-leaching process has been developed for concentrating platinum group metals (PGM) from a PGM-containing ferroalloy. The optimized roasting conditions used a NaOH-to-ferroalloy mass ratio of 1.2 at 600 °C for 2 h. The roasted product mainly comprised Na4SiO4, NaFeO2 and Fe2O3. The iron oxide and sodium silicate associated with the roasted product were leached in water and dilute sulfuric acid solution, while the PGM was concentrated in the acid-leached residue. A PGM concentration of 23.4% was obtained with assaying, and the concentration factor of PGM from the ferroalloy to PGM concentration was greater than 9.

In 2008, the authors developed a methodology for identifying underground coal mines at high risk for major-hazard events. It focused on major hazard-related violations of safety standards associated with high-risk conditions. Later, using a sample of 103 mines with 2008 and 2009 data, injury measures and U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) citation data were combined into a safe performance index (SPI). The SPI was used to assess the relative safety-related risk of mines, including by mine-size category. In this paper, comparisons are made of SPI-associated, normalized safety performance measures across mine-size categories, with emphasis on small-mine safety performance as compared to large and medium-sized mines. An experimental hole-to-hole seismic probe system has been developed for use in coal measure geology as a means of determining the structural conditions of coal seams. The source probe produces a 500-joule electric arc discharge whose seismic wavelet has a spectrum in the 200 to 2,000 Hz frequency range. Low compliance hydrophones contained in the source probe as well as in a separate seismic detector probe are matched to the frequency range of the source. Both probes are constructed with 5-72 cm diameter housings. The transducers in the probes are equipped with fluid-inflatable boots to permit operation in either wet or dry boreholes. Preliminary tests in vertical boreholes drilled 213 m apart in sedimentary rock formations show reliable operation and useful seismic propagation measurements along horizontal and oblique paths up to 232 m in length. Because the seismic wave- let has an accurately repeatable waveshape, multiple shots and signal averaging techniques can be used to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio and extend the transmission distances.

"On January 9, 2014, a large chemical spill occurred on the bank of the Elk River near Charleston, WV. Within hours, the potable water supply for more than 300,000 people was contaminated, and the incident captured national headlines for weeks. Although the primary chemical, crude 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol, or MCHM, is deemed nonhazardous, the impacts of the spill are significant – with all stakeholders, including the public, members of industry, and relevant government agencies experiencing losses. This case highlights the need for a more proactive approach to environmental management, shifting from crisis control and remediation to crisis prevention and risk management. INTRODUCTION On the morning of January 9, 2014, approximately 10,000 gallons of crude 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol (MCHM) leaked from a 48,000-gallon storage tank sitting on the bank of the Elk River near Charleston, West Virginia (WVDEP, 2014; CSB, 2014). MCHM is a chemical commonly used in preparation of fine coal, and is deemed nonhazardous in terms of transportation and storage regulations and also toxicity (CDC, 2014a). Freedom Industries, Inc., a producer and vendor of specialty chemical products, had acquired the storage facility where the spill occurred from Etowah River Terminal, LLC just a few weeks prior in December 2013 (WVDEP, 2014; Freedom, 2005). The direct cause of the spill was ultimately determined to be two small holes in the base of the 76-year-old tank, which were created due to corrosion damage (Bauerlein & McWhirter, 2014). The spill site was located just over a mile upstream from the intake of a municipal water treatment facility operated by West Virginia American Water (WVAW), which serves a population of 300,000 across nine counties in central West Virginia (CDC, 2014a). In a matter of hours, the leaked MCHM made its way through the treatment facility and into the water of nearby homes and businesses, where its strong smell was noticed almost immediately. On the evening of the spill, WVAW concluded that its conventional treatment processes, which include carbon filters to remove a variety of contaminants from water, were not capable of fully removing the MCHM and a “Do Not Use” order was issued for all customers (WVAW, 2014a). With little information readily available regarding the potential human health effects of MCHM, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) quickly issued an advisory ruling that set a maximum screening level of 1 ppm for safe drinking water (CDC, 2014a). Based on this recommendation, the “Do Not Use” order remained in effect for a total of eight days, until January 17, when the WVAW distribution water was confirmed to have MCHM concentrations below this level (WVAW, 2014a). However, due to the pungent odor of the chemical, its presence was still recognizable in the WVAW facility and in consumers’ tap water after the order was lifted (Manuel, 2014). Recent studies have shown that the chemical can be detected in water at concentrations as low as 0.55 ppb by individuals experienced in odor identification (Rosen et al., 2014); and even individuals with no such training can detect pure MCHM at just 7 ppb (WVTAP, 2014). The fact that this chemical can be sensed at such low levels – indeed far below those considered safe – undoubtedly added to growing public concern. In response to numerous complaints and demands, WVAW continued flushing the treatment facility and pipes until February 25 when MCHM levels were measured below 2 ppb (WVAWb, 2014), and eventually replaced the affected filter media (WVAWc, 2014)."

This discussion will answer these questions by suggesting ways in which effective accident prediction techniques improve the ability to foresee and prevent accidents. Accident Prediction Process The secret to accident prediction is to utilize the tendency for history to repeat itself. The same circumstances and the same human behavior that produced accidents in the past tend to produce accidents in the present and the future. The ability to predict accident occurence in the future by projecting from the past is a statistical process. In a bookmaker's jargon this means "playing the odds" or "the percentages". A horse or a sports team may be beaten on any given day, but by skillfully assessing the factors of past performance and assigning odds, many clever bettors make money in the long run.

The imposition of non-market regulations, such as the proposed SO2 standards for coal combustion, will typically lead to less efficient (thus more costly) production in a free enterprise system. For the coal industry these increased costs will occur in several ways, among which are mining less accessible low sulfur reserves and transporting low sulfur coal to distant markets. There are, of course, social benefits of reducing the S02 emissions from the use of high sulfur coal. The social benefits include decreased health risks, reduced damages to property, and certain unmeasurable benefits associated with the aesthetic appeal of clean air. Proponents of Federal S02 standards argue that the benefits gained from reduced emissions will exceed the costs borne by the coal industry and society in general in meeting the regulations. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the degree to which costs of meeting future energy demands from coal will change under different sulfur standards. No attempt is made to estimate the benefits of imposing regulations. Specifically, the impact of SO2 standards on the private costs of meeting regional coal demands, the competitive positions of the nation's major coal producing regions, the degree to which strip mining as opposed to underground mining will be feasible, the amount of coal being processed, and the amount of coal transported over major rail routes will be analyzed.
