The standard Gibbs free energy of formation (ΔGo f, 298) of bastnasite, (Ce, La, Nd, Pr)FCO3, was estimated using four different methods. The obtained average values were − 1589.5 kJ/mol for CeFCO3, − 1599.5 kJ/mol for LaFCO3, − 1589.1 kJ/mol for NdFCO3, and − 1595.4 kJ/mol for PrFCO3. The value for cerium bastnasite, CeFCO3, was used to construct a potential vs. pH (Eh-pH) diagram to investigate the stability relations of cerium bastnasite. The diagram shows that CeFCO3 is stable in neutral to basic conditions (pH ~ 6.5–11).

While the COVID-19 pandemic has dominated the headlines, another epidemic in the United States has continued apace — the opioid epidemic. Half a million opioid overdose deaths have occurred in the United States since 1999, when the opioid epidemic began. The causes of the epidemic include the rise in prescriptions for opioid pain medications, including for work-related pain. Miners and other occupations identified as physically demanding and at higher injury risk have been found to be at increased risk for opioid overdose [1]. However, awareness of the risk factors that might lead to opioid use, the potential hazards associated with their use, and resources to prevent addiction and death can allow miners to make choices that can reduce these risks.

While the late 1960's are known as the years of the public recognition of impending environmental crises, the 1970's will be known as the decade of public concern for improving the quality of that environment. One of the present major environmental concerns is the temporary disturbance resulting from coal surface or open cast mining. To realize that this concern will continue in the future, one need only observe the daily news media. Increasing energy demands in the U.S., a doubling of electrical power consumption each decade during the present century, and the projected needs for the remainder of the century are indica¬tions that coal surface mining as a major extractive industry will continue. Coal and lignite, prime energy resources and extremely abundant in these United States, in the face of seemingly limited gas, oil and uranium reserves, are both destined for expanded future use. Presently some extremely serious techno-logical and environmental problems are associated with the develop¬ment and use of nuclear power. It is true that the extraction and use of coal as an energy fuel poses disruptive problems for the environment, but the solutions to many of the problems are known or can be solved within a reasonable time framework. Certainly our national well-being and continued survival, as a free nation within the world community, automatically dictate the continued use of the coal resource for energy. Concurrently, those engaged in coal surface mining, with the temporary disturbance of the land and water resources, must also realistically conclude that public concern for maintaining and improving the quality of the environment will not diminish. An ongoing problem for industry in Korea is effective removal of heavy metals from and safe disposal of spent power plant fly ash. This research endeavor attempts to develop selective separation of Ni from leach liquor using a selective chemical precipitation method. The research was conducted by changing two variables, the pH and the concentration of ions in solution. The effect of other ions present in the system on the separation efficiency of Ni species was also investigated by adjusting OH and NH3 concentrations. In the pH range of 7-9, the chemical precipitation method produced a high yield of Ni by precipitation from the fly ash leach liquor.

Each year more than 400 coal miners are injured (fatal and non-fatal) by rock falling from between or around roof supports. Many of these injuries could be prevented by the installation of roof screen (wire mesh). However, many coal mines may be reluctant to use roof screen because of the added cost. The goal of this study was to determine the potential saving in workers? compensation (WC) premiums that could be achieved due to a reduction in rock fall injuries after roof screening. The WC rate-setting methods utilized by IL and KY were investigated in this study. Using actual data obtained from MSHA, national and state WC bodies and individual insurance companies (e.g. average cost per injury, loss cost rate, number of injuries per year, number of injuries preventable each year with roof screening), hypothetical mines (representing two mine sizes: 67 and 150 employees) were constructed with realistic ranges for estimates of injuries and WC premium costs. Using each state?s actual WC rate-setting formulas, total savings in WC costs after a three-year period were determined. Across both states, savings in WC premiums ranged from 1.8% to 14.6% when injuries were reduced by 10% to 20%. Additionally, an economic analysis was performed for an existing mine consisting of 67 employees. For this mine, the annual cost of a roof screening program was estimated at $240,000. If the screening prevented 13 ?struck by? WC claims over a 3-year period at this mine, the reduction in WC premiums alone could pay for the entire screening program.

Steel-fiber-reinforced-shotcrete (SFRS) methods of testing and the wording of specifications vary from country to country. In the USA ASTM C1018 is widely used. The Canadians have taken a close look at C1018 and point out that exact determination of the first crack is very subjective, and they propose a method of design that eliminates this variable. The Europeans (EFNARC) have taken the principles of testing a step further than ASTM C1018, and have added a new step in measuring the effectiveness of SFRS. EFNARC uses an "energy absorption" of a plate loaded in its center, in addition to the principles of C1018. The principles of SFRS design are also used in Japan, Norway and elsewhere.

Without insulation we could not survive on this planet. This may sound like a self-serving statement but it is a fact. The blanket of air which surrounds us is a very effective insulating blanket, allowing some shortwave solar radiation to warm us during the day while retaining the longer infrared radiation at night. Our life on earth is very much dependent on materials performing an insulating function without being thought of as insulation, clothing, fur, window glass, the ice of an igloo etc. The mechanisms of heat transfer involved in these materials are analogous to those involved in engineered insulations - Engineered insulations are designed for maximum effectiveness for given conditions within the applicable retraints. Engineered insulations are very effective! As an illustration let us consider this graph (Figure 1). It represents: 1. The radiative heat transfer between two 1 foot2 (0.0932) radiantly black surfaces, one at 100F (38C) and the other at the temperature indicated on the bottom scale. This does not include the convective and conductive heat flow of the air, both of which are significant but small in comparison. 2. The heat transfer resulting from the placement of 1 inch (25.4 mm) of insulation [10 pcf (160 kg/m3) ceramic fiber] between these two plates.

The entire subject area of micro-seismic events due to stored strain energy, as distinct from gas-driven coal outbursts, can be readily sub-divided into firstly events with their energy source from within the coal seam (termed “bursts”) and secondly, event with their energy source outside of the coal seam in either the overburden and/or floor strata. The reason for sub-dividing micro-seismic events in this manner is that if the causation mechanisms and associated geotechnical conditions are materially different, then effective pre-mining predictions and subsequent operational controls may also differ. Attempting to explain a multitude of micro-seismic event types without consideration of varying source mechanisms will inevitably lead to inadequate causal explanations and effective controls.

The importance of "Mineral Pigments" can best be shown by noting that the world production is estimated to be in excess of 47 billion kilograms (52 million st). This quantity if pack- aged in the common 22.6 Kg (50 Lb.) bag and placed end to end would circle the world over 500 times. This world production figure is based on a broad concept that pigments, extenders, and fillers have essentially similar functions. In this paper mineral pigments are products produced synthetically or from selected minerals and through pulverization have characteristics of pigments.

Uranium associated with phosphate deposits has been the subject of numerous investigations (1-8). In the land-pebble phosphate deposits of central Florida, uranium is found in the phosphate matrix (ore) and in the leached zone between the over-burden and matrix (1). Between 0.01 to 0.02 percent uranium is found in the leached zone, which consists of apatite and aluminum phosphate minerals (crandallite, wavellite, millisite) (Z). The primary phosphate mineral in the matrix is apatite, and the 0.005 to 0.01 percent uranium typically found in the matrix is associated with this mineral (1). It is generally believed that uranium substitutes for calcium in the apatite structure (3-5). Clay and quartz phases associated with phosphate deposits contain little uranium (1, 6), and no descrete uranium minerals have been detected in these deposits (4). A typical phosphate matrix consists of quartz, slimes (-150 mesh material) and recoverable phosphate. When the matrix is beneficiated, partition of uranium and radium takes place (9, 10). Although considerable data exists on how uranium is distributed in the phosphate deposits, no systematic study has recently been reported on the distribution of uranium during phosphate rock beneficiation. The purpose of this study was to determine how uranium is distributed in the various strata which comprise the overall land-pebble phosphate deposits, as well as how the uranium is redistributed during beneficiation of phosphate matrix. To obtain this information studies were carried out on matrix samples obtained from three different mines in central Florida. Using pilot-plant scale beneficiation, an analysis was performed on how uranium in the matrix is distributed among the pebble fractions, flotation concentrates, flotation tails, and slimes. The uranium level profile for an active mining area was also obtained. Also, since thousands of acres of slime ponds may someday become a source of both phosphate and uranium, a depth versus uranium content profile was determined for an inactive slime pond.

The Montana Talc ore body was discovered in 1983 in Montana's Gravelly Range, about 40 km (25 miles) south of Ennis. Initial drilling indicated a 910-kt (1-million st) ore body of high purity talc. Preliminary analyses on ore cuttings included chemical analysis, brightness measurements, and microscopic evaluations of the structure of the talc. Results indicated it was similar to talc currently being marketed from Montana and it would probably have good commercial value. Based on the positive test results, a test pit was made and a 180-t (200-st) sample of ore was mined. A portion of the ore was ground to various particle sizes and evaluated to determine its strengths, weaknesses, and other characteristics. The deposit is located close to the Cyprus Yellowstone deposit. It was therefore believed that Montana Talc ore may possess many of the same characteristics. Testing and analyses showed the talc to have a high purity and an extremely large surface area, even for Montanatype tales. The ore was also situated in a massive deposit, indicating low cost mining. While the lab analyses were encouraging, the true evidence would be obtained from commercial tests in the marketplace. About 91 t (100 st) of ore were ground to product specifications for pitch control, paint filler, and plastics filler. Consumers were contacted and requested to evaluate the sample talc products. A major trial for the talc as a pitch control agent was arranged at a Northeast paper mill. The trial indicated the new Montana Talc product performed as well or better than the current standard in the industry. In fact, due to a minor modification in the compaction process to make the transport of the talc easier, the product had substantially less dust than the currently used product. The operating people at the paper mill requested that management purchase this talc. Trials were also run at paint plants for use as a pigment filler. And the talc was fabricated into a number of plastics compounds. The initial product tests were largely positive and provided encouragement to proceed with the project. Different grinding mills were used and their performance evaluated. Significant data were generated by the custom grinders. They indicated how the Montana Talc ore ground and the particle size distributions produced at different grinding settings. Encouraged by the positive marketing tests, a prefeasibility study was commissioned. A talc grinding plant and mine plans were designed and capital and operating costs estimated. Initial economics showed an attractive return. The operating costs were among the lowest in the industry. The positive economics, along with the excellent results by the products in the marketing tests to the paper, paint, and plastics industries, led to the recommendation to proceed with the project. Plant construction began in June of 1985. The Montana Talc Co. (MTC) analyzed the data from the commercial tests. Based on the product's outstanding performance and the uniqueness of its high purity and platy structure, a strategy was developed to position the company as a premium talc supplier.

Silver bearing bulk sulfide concentrates from several Peruvian mines were autoclaved in a 19 liter (five gallon) laboratory autoclave in Lima, Peru. Cyanidation of autoclaved concentrates following a hot lime jarosite destruction step extracted over 98 percent of the silver and over 95 percent of the gold. Autoclave operating parameters such as time, temperature, pulp density and autoclaved solids recycle were investigated and reaction rates determined. The problems of excessive heat generation, silver solubility during autoclaving, and formation of pellets containing unreacted sulfides were addressed. The data presented will be used to design a continuous autoclave pilot plant to pro-vide reliable scale up data for a 50 -100 ton per day facility.

INTRODUCTION Insofar as I am aware, the term rock mechanics was not in the English dictionary in 1930 when I started my graduate program at West Virginia University. Hence, I never thought that I was undertaking studies in rock mechanics when I undertook to write a thesis on the physical properties of West Virginia coal. In this case, the subject was primarily concerned with the compressive strength of coal, the elasticity of the coal, the physical weathering properties of the coal and its friability. These days investigations of rocks pertaining to such properties are included in the term "rock mechanics". Other than this aspect, the principle interest in this part of my program was that I became interested in the strength of coal from the standpoint of structural purposes, and also became cognizant of its elastic properties as well as its energy storing properties. This research also tied in with a remark that Professor Lawall made in a Mining Methods class in 1928 when he remarked that a peculiar thing was happening in the southern part of West Virginia, namely, in the Pocahontas coal field. His remarks were to the effect that pillars were blowing up in the mines and when asked why he replied the cause was not known. The failure of three-inch coal specimens, especially those in stronger coal, in non-hydraulic actuated testing machines was reminiscent of his description of those pillar bursts or bumps.

During the past several years, Raymond Kaiser Engineers has prepared numerous studies concerning the technical and economic feasibility of coal exporting facilities in the western United States. Perhaps the most striking conclusion to be drawn from these efforts is that many people underestimate the complexity of the highly competitive, dynamic coal marketing system which includes coal loading terminals as an essential but relatively low-cost link in the energy production and delivery chain. The title of this paper, "The Status of Western United States Coal Ports - An Economic Assessment," should not delude anyone into thinking that the future of western U.S. coal- exporting ports has now congealed into a well- defined economic plan. As this paper will demonstrate, the situation is complex and more dynamic than ever and promises to remain so into the late 1980's.

The dissolution behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions at 75°C has been investigated. The variables investigated include concentration of lixiviants, pH of the solution and various oxidants. The anodic dissolution of gold was studied in the absence of oxidants using the potentiodynamic polarization technique. The cathodic reaction of oxidants was studied on a platinum electrode. Tafel polarization tests were also performed to determine the dissolution rate. The overall dissolution of gold in ammoniacal solutions was examined using a mixed potential theory. A comparative study on the role of cupric am mine, oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, sodium hypochlorite as oxidants for the dissolution of gold in ammoniacal solutions has been carried out.

A major bauxite belt was discovered and evaluated from 1969 to 1974 by P. T. Alcoa Minerals of Indonesia in West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The proven reserves of beneficiated bauxite are 800 million tons averaging 38.6% AA1203 and 3.0% RSiO2. Inferred reserves of washed bauxite are in excess of 2 billion tons. The bauxite occurs as capping of low lying hills which were formed during the post Paleogene peneplaination stage. The overburden varies from 0.6 to 3.8 meters and the nodular bauxite horizon from 2.2 to 5.2 meters. The deposits were formed by the in situ weathering of predominantly acidic and basic intrusive rocks.

Next year, the ITA will be holding its annual World Tunnel Congress (WTC) in San Francisco, CA, April 22-28, 2016. The ITA’s mission is to be the leading international organization advancing the entire industry and promoting the use of tunnels and underground space through knowledge-sharing and application of technology. This article updates a series of articles about the ITA prepared in 2007 by Harvey Parker, former president of the ITA, in anticipation of the next WTC in San Francisco.ITA accomplishes its goals through a range of activities that includes organizing conferences, workshops and meetings, working group and committee studies, training, experiments and other activities. ITA is also involved in the publication of proceedings, reports, and guideline documents as well as facilitating interaction among its membership and with sister organizations and decision makers. ITA currently includes 73 member nations and several hundred affiliate members, including 15 prime sponsors and 63 supporters. Entrainment is a process by which fine and ultrafine particles are transferred to the flotation froth from the top of the flotation pulp, and eventually discharge to the concentrate product, evenwhen they are not attached to gas bubbles. Therefore, entrainment can be considered as a two-step process, one at the upper layer of the pulp to the flotation froth, and the other from froth to the concentrate. Entrainment is inevitable for both hydrophobic and hydrophilic minerals and is one of the significant factors affecting concentrate grade. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the entrainment mechanisms and entrainment models, as well as a summary of the main factors affecting entrainment and the techniques thatmay be used to lower or eliminate entrainment. Based on the review, we point out that selective aggregation of fine and ultrafine gangue minerals using appropriate process aids (polymeric depressants, inorganic salts, etc.) to increase their particle sizes appears to be a convenient and economical method. Directions of further research along this line are discussed.

The Regional Connector Transit Project is a 1.9-mile-long underground light rail system that will connect LA Metro’s A (Blue), E (Expo), and L (Gold) Lines in downtown Los Angeles. This $1.75-billion design-build project is scheduled for revenue service in Spring 2023. The project consists of 21-foot diameter twin-bored tunnels, a 300-footlong crossover SEM cavern, three new underground stations (at 1st Street/Central Avenue, 2nd Street/ Broadway Avenue, and 2nd/Hope Streets), and cut-and-cover tunnels along South Flower, Alameda, and 1st Streets. This paper, which is the continuation of our previous paper presented in RETC 2019—LA Metro Regional Connector Transit Project: Successful Halfway-Through Completion, will provide insight regarding the construction of major components, and the system integration and testing work undertaken for this complex transit project.
