The title of the paper which I have been asked to present is somewhat misleading it infers in fact that there is a definite coalbed height below which raps or canopies cannot be applied to electric face equipment. Although this may be so with regard to certain pieces of existing equipment under certain conditions, to date we do not have enough experience to determine this magic number. Therefore MESA is continuing to hold the line on the time frames stipulated in Section 75.1710-1 of the Mandatory Safety Standards - Underground Coal Mines, which at this point in time requires these protective structures in mining heights of 60 inches or more. In order to give you an idea why we are taking such a firm stand on this matter, I believe it is necessary to describe some of the background work that was done prior to promulgation of the regulations and to give a resume of our experience since the requirements have become effective. Initially MESA made field investigations of all underground mines to determine what the state of the art was in the use of cabs and canopies for protecting equip¬ment operators from falls of roof. These studies revealed that the application was basically in its infancy and what progress had been made was due to the impetus of the mine operators themselves. Manufacturers of electric face equip¬ment provided these structures only on the direct order from the mining company and built them to their specifications. In talking to the operators and the miners in mines where cabs or canopies were in use, it was the consensus that these structures did improve safety and that although originally there was some reluctance on the part; of the miners to work in the confines of a cab or canopy, mast would not work without them once they had been adapted to the equipment.

A decanter centrifuge of novel design was developed for the dewatering of fine-solids slurries having micrometer-range particles that form pastelike, flowable, hard-to-dewater cakes. The design combines a compound beach with a cake flow control structure that allows expressed liquid, from the cake in the dry beach region to be returned to the liquid pool while maintaining a high-solids throughput. To provide optimal performance with various operating parameters (i.e., feed rate, centrifugal gravity, pool, differential speed, concentration of feed solids and slurry type), the cake flow control is adjustable. The second part of the beach is preferably at a zero angle. Tests showed that the new design allows increases in solids dryness and solids throughput. Mining law is essentially a branch of the law of real property. It concerns acquisition of property for extracting contained minerals, and the rights, privileges and duties that fall upon the holder thereof once the rights are acquired Accordingly, this section focuses on the procedures to be followed in acquiring state. federal and private lands, and defines briefly the nature of the rights obtained. The mining laws of Canada and Mexico are summarized, and the related subjects of minerals taxation and governmental regulation are discussed briefly. This section is not intended to be the basis for legal decisions. Rather, its purpose is to provide the engineer with an understanding of basic principles and procedures. For a detailed treatise of mining law, reference can be made to The American Law o] Mining, a five-volume set edited by the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation. The law changes constantly, especially that based on federal and state statutes, and the reader is cautioned to be alert for subsequent modifications of statutes, regulations and case law. 2.1-PRELIMINARY LAND-STATUS CHECK Often, after completion of area reconnaissance, or perhaps after receipt of a submittal, a specific more localized target area will become of interest. Usually, an intensive exploration program comprising detailed surface mapping, sampling, geophysical prospecting and drilling will be required before the mineral potential of the ground can be properly evaluated. Before an investment of this magnitude is made, however, it is advisable to obtain rights to mine ore from the property. Otherwise, knowledge of the exploration activity might greatly inflate land values, or speculators or competing mining concerns might step in. Hence, as a general rule, a land-acquisition program should be undertaken before an intensive exploration project is begun. The first step in such a program is to make a land-status check to determine whether the subject lands are available and, if so, from whom they can be obtained and by what means. 2.1.1-BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT RECORDS In those states which contain large areas of federal land, basically (he western states, the primary informational source is the records of the Bureau of Land Management. These may t)e examined at the land office having jurisdiction over federal lands in the area of interest. The records for Montana and North and South Dakota are kept at the Billings (Mont ) land office; Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas, Cliejenne, Wyo.; New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, Santa Fe, N M ; northern Alaska, Fairbanks, and southern, Anchorage; Utah, Salt Lake City; Nevada, Reno; Arizona, Phoenix; Colorado, Denver. There are two land offices in California, at Sacramento and Los Angeles Records for other states are kept in Washington, D C. at the office of the Director, Bureau of Land Management.

"Phosphorite, or phosphate rock, is the most significant secondary rare-earth resource. It contains high amounts of phosphate-bearing minerals along with low contents of rare earth elements (REEs). In Florida, about 19 Mt of phosphate rock are mined annually and most are used to manufacture fertilizers using a wet process, in which sulfuric acid reacts with phosphates to produce phosphoric acid and phosphogypsum. In the wet process, REEs are also leached out into solution and eventually get lost in the leaching residue and phosphate fertilizer. Recovering REEs from Florida phosphate rock in the wet process will be beneficial to broadening rare-earth availability, improving the quality of phosphoric acid product and protecting the environment.This study focuses on the influences of wet-process operating conditions on REE leaching efficiency. The results indicate that REE leaching efficiency increases with phosphoric acid addition in the initial pulp. At a temperature of 75 °C, a stoichiometric ratio of sulfuric acid (H2 SO4 ) to calcium oxide (CaO) of 1.05 and a weight ratio of liquid to solid of 3.5, REE leaching efficiency reached a relatively high value of 52.82 percent. The trends of REE leaching efficiency were similar to those for phosphoric acid (P2O5 ). Extensive tests on the leaching residue showed that during leaching, about 90 percent of the REEs were released from the phosphate rock but only 52.82 percent ended up in the leaching solution. This phenomenon can be attributed to two factors: (1) the effect of phosphate ions (PO4 3-) in the solution, which caused REE ions to form REE phosphates and be precipitated into the leaching residue, and (2) the influence of large amounts of anions such as sulfate (SO4 2-), dihydrogen phosphate (H2 PO4 -) and hydrogen phosphate (HPO4 2-) anions as well as the polar molecule H3 PO4 , which surrounded the REE cations and formed an ion atmosphere that prevented the PO4 3- from contacting and combining with REE cations. Interaction of these two opposite effects determined the REE distribution between leaching solution and residue."

Geological, hydrological, and geochemical information synthesized in a Geographical Information System (GIS) for water and rock surrounding South and Middle Forks of Mineral Creek, northwest of Silverton Colorado, was analyzed to distinguish between the natural and the mining-related sources of metals to dace waters in the watershed An important natural source of metals to surface water emanates from a porphyry molybdenum deposit south and upslope from the Middle Fork of Mineral Creek. Interaction of surface and ground water with fractured, altered rocks and permeable, Quatemay-age surficial deposits produces downstream water quality that does not meet current State of Colorado water quality standards for metals and pH. GIS site characterization and three-dimensional modeling distinguish surficial deposits as volumetrically substantial, significant sources of naturally occurring metals that strongly influence water quality and complicate ongoing mine-site mitigation efforts. Our findings indicate that regional hydrologic and geologic information needs to be evaluated before realistic water quality guidelines are established and mitigation recommendations are confidently implemented.

The Cannon mine, located in north-central Washington is mining gold hosted in silicified Eocene-age arkosic sediments arrayed along a regional strike-slip fault system. Branches of the Eagle Creek fault have broken the Chumstick Formation into blocks and wedges, and have caused intense deformation of stratigraphy in the mine. Mineralization at the Cannon mine (B-Reef) and O-Reef (L-O mine) is a bulk silicification with high grade cross-cutting veins containing principally electrum, silver sulfosalts and pyrite in a gangue of quartz, adularia and calcite. Orebodies have very irregular shapes, but tend to follow stratigraphy and high-angle pre-mineral fault breccias and splays developed adjacent to the major faults. Both B-Reef and O-Reef occur at significant bends in the regional trend of major fault strands. Mean gold grades decrease upward from near sea level to the 300 m elevation at the Cannon mine. A new discovery, the A-Reef is hosted by a moderately dipping structure which is at a low angle to bedding. Fluid inclusion studies of B-Reef ore zones indicate dilute ore-bearing fluids boiled at temperatures between 185 and 2850 C at a depth of 1 km. Many ore zones are bounded by sheared mudstone and claystone and a much broader halo of argillic alteration comprising illite, smectite and sericite. Trace and major element analysis by ICP-ES for 33 elements, LECO for S, Hg by CVAA and gold by AA-FA shows dispersion patterns hundreds of meters outward from the known orebodies in the Cannon mine. Geometric mean comparisons, hierarchical R-mode cluster analysis and single element spatial plots show that Hg, As, Sb, S and K/Al compose a suite of elements which are significantly dispersed away from, and increase toward mineralization. Ba, Ca, Na, Mn, V and Zr decrease toward mineralization. The suite is more selective than gold with respect to known mineralization within the exploration area.

Water is increasingly recognized as a critical issue for sustainable development, becoming as important as carbon to corporate responsibility and reputation. Although the cement industry’s overall ‘water footprint’ is relatively small compared to other sectors, the Cement Sustainability Initiative of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD/CSI) has recognized the importance of water and the need to take actions towards efficient water management, with developing standardizing practices and employing a risk-based assessment approach, mostly at local level where individual facilities and activities can have implications for other water users in the area. Sharrcem, a member of the Titan Cement Group, has made significant investments to upgrade its production facilities, the technological process and apply environmentally friendly technologies. Under this frame, Sharrcem implemented a project for the construction of a Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) in the Cement Plant facilities, which has been successfully operating since early 2016. This paper discusses the technology applied at the new WWTP and the results achieved already, with significant improvement in the quality of the treated water, as compared to the previous situation where untreated wastewater was directly discharged to the nearby Dimce Stream. The WWTP project is a major investment of Sharrcem that aims to improve the quality of the discharged water effluents and thus prevent potential river pollution and overall protect the environment and the health of Sharrcem employees and local community. The WWTP operates with the Sequencing Batch Reactors (SBR) technology, is fully automated and has been also connected with few households of the neighboring community to treat also their sewage water. The plant can be expanded in the future – to connect with additional households - without increasing the size of the treatment tanks. One of the benefits of this project is that by removing a variety of contaminants from water it becomes usable again, depending on the nature of the contaminants and the end use of the water treated. According to the monitoring results the treated water that comes out of the WWTP fully meets quality requirements according to the EU and local limit values standards

A subsequent spin off of the energy shortage is the new life for barite. Over 90% of the barite produced in the world is used as a weighting material in oil well drilling muds. Business is booming; the price of barite has risen; scarcity is imminent, and exploration is going full steam ahead. New barite-producing companies are being formed and many of the barite consumers are considering becoming producers. Prospectors have found a new "love," smaller deposits are being explored, and old deposits, previously rejected, are getting a reappraisal. Even barite tailing piles are being resampled.

Fracture under low velocity free-fall and double impact, and under slow compression have been-investigated. The pattern of breakage and the size distribution of resulting fragments for sand-cement and glass spheres have been determined. Photoelasticity methods were used to simulate the stress distributions in free-fall impact in order to explain the observed patterns of breakage. Oblique fracture planes, occurring only in free-fall impact, develop along lines which coincide with the trajectories of principal compression as determined by mathematical analysis Breakage efficiencies for different modes of fracture were compared for both types of spheres. For the same specimen and loading system, static loading and low velocity dynamic loading induce geometrically similar stress fields resulting in reasonably similar fracture patterns and shapes of fragments.

In 2003, a high-temperature pressure leaching circuit to treat copper sulfide concentrates was commissioned at the copper/molybdenum operation at Bagdad, AZ. In late 2007, a medium-temperature pressure leaching circuit was commissioned at the Morenci mine in Arizona. The Morenci circuit was shut down in mid-2008, following a fire in the autoclave circuit. The onset of the global financial crisis in late 2008 resulted in significant changes to the operating profile in the Southwestern United States with respect to concentrates production, concentrates treatment, acid production and acid consumption. As a result of these changes, the Morenci concentrator was shut down, and the pressure leaching circuit remained offline. In late 2014, the increasing acid requirements in the Southwestern United States prompted a reevaluation of the Morenci concentrate leaching facilities. As a result, the pressure leaching circuit was restarted in high-temperature (200 °C) mode in May 2015 and has operated successfully for three years since recommissioning. This paper describes the current pressure leaching circuit configuration and the factors leading to the successful application of copper sulfide concentrate leaching at this location.

"The South Hartford Conveyance and Storage Tunnel (SHCST) project is a significant component of the Hartford Metropolitan District’s (MDC) long-term control plan (LTCP), which is overseen by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CTDEEP). This project will address a portion of the MDC’s Clean Water Project (CWP), which will reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs), eliminate sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), and reduce nitrogen released into the Connecticut River. The purpose of the SHCST project is to eliminate West Hartford and Newington SSOs, eliminate Franklin area CSOs discharging to Wethersfield Cove and minimize CSO discharges to the South Branch Park River. The locations of each overflow are shown in Fig. 1. In 2010, the district prepared a preliminary design report (PDR) for the SHCST project, which included relief of the Folly Brook trunk sewer and proposed to keep the tunnel boring machine (TBM) retrieval shaft within the city limits of Hartford. Figure 1 shows the 2010 PDR recommended tunnel route. Subsequent to the PDR, the objectives of the SHCST have slightly shifted. In accordance with ongoing revisions to the LTCP, relief of the Folly Brook Trunk Sewer is no longer necessary. Additionally, the MDC has decided to perform less sewer separation in the Franklin Avenue drainage area. To replace the sewer separation, new relief points are proposed within the Franklin area and will be diverted to the SHCST. Figure 1 also shows the current recommended tunnel route (Alignment F). During 2012, the MDC conducted an evaluation of the potential of connecting the proposed North Tunnel (originally proposed as an independent tunnel with its own pump station) into the South Hartford Conveyance and Storage Tunnel. This evaluation concluded that the two proposed tunnels could reasonably be connected together and operated as a single tunnel system utilizing the tunnel pump station at the eastern terminus of the South Hartford Tunnel (Fig. 2). It also was concluded that this alternative was less costly than two independent tunnel systems."

The original patent for the gyratory crusher was granted to Philetus W. Gates in 1881. This first crusher was used by the Buffalo Cement Co. At the time these early gyratory crushers were developed all mining and quarrying, either underground or open pit, was done by hand; tonnages generally were small and product specifications simple and liberal. Likewise plants were small and demands for small product sizes practically nonexistent. In addition to substantial amounts of hand labor, the available material handling equipment was small, simple, and not suited to handling large run of mine ore. Mine can, cable ways, or belt conveyon transporting crushed material to the mill had limited capacity per hour. At the turn of the century the largest Gates crusher, the No. 9, had a receiving opening of 21 x 48 in. with a three-arm spider and a 21 x 80-in. opening with a two-arm spider. The steam shovel began to change the entire picture of open pit quarrying. As a result of the use of steam shovels around 1910 crushers with 48-in. receiving openings were built; thus it can be seen that the basic gyratory crusher was developed prior to World War I. The improvement of the internal combustion engine and the use of pneumatic tires created a new set of operating conditions. Early mines were small, using shrinkage stoping and small mine can. The capacity of material handling was small, limiting the size of the largest piece and the feed rate. Improved material handling resulted in more and more large open pit mines with large shovels and a tremendous increase in the size of off road or mine haul trucks or rail can. Primary gyratory crushers also increased with receiving openings as large as 60 in. and connected hp of 1,000.

This paper presents the challenges of the Homestead Avenue Interceptor Extension (HAIE) project in downtown Hartford, Connecticut. The new 72-inch (1,830 mm) sewer pipeline project consists of installing approximately 3,010 linear feet (920 m) of PVC lined reinforced concrete pipe using pressurized face microtunneling. The entire alignment is located within soft to very soft, varved silt and clay. To the extent possible, the alignment was selected to avoid bedrock, glacial till, miscellaneous fill,buried steel piles, and utilities. Challenges for this project include low ground cover, crossing major transportation routes, and limiting settlement to prevent damage to historical buildings and critical utilities. The machine was selected for the ground conditions. Design calculations were performed for selecting the reinforced concrete pipe class and for evaluating settlement. The potential for settlement damage was evaluated using both conventional analysis and finite element analysis

As virgin coal reserves dwindle, more and more mines are being opened in areas with previous mining. As addressed in this conference before, there are solutions available for designing mines extracting coal from reserves with known underground workings above or below the target seam. Often times, however, mining begins with limited knowledge of the underground workings. Even with careful planning, the proposed design has limited success because the ?facts? as presented during planning turn out not to be as accurate as one would like. At National Coal?s Mine #14, mining the Walnut Mountain seam, after driving the main entries in some 34 crosscuts, it was found during routine mine examinations that the pillars had separated from the roof in a few areas of the mains. Immediate roof conditions proved to be sound but questions arose concerning the stability of the main roof and floor. Core tests were done to better determine the rock strengths and characteristics. The paper presents the ideology used to tackle the effects of mining over old works in an operating coal mine. This paper discusses the analysis of the symptoms observed and the steps taken to ensure that this pillar separation was caused by the underlying old workings and that the separation was expected and controllable.

The discovery of tungsten-bearing quartz outcroppings in Vance County, N. C., by the Hamme brothers in 1942, made international news in the mining industry and was, in fact, one of the major ore discoveries made in the U.S. during the last 25 years. Operations began at the Hamme mine in 1942, but after 16 years of successful operation, the mine was closed down in 1958 under adverse market conditions. By that time, it had produced nearly 20 million lbs of metallic tungsten. Because of the square-set timber mining method then in use, mine operating expenses were high, actually representing 78% of the total operating expenses at the property. In timber work alone, 160 men were employed. Approximately 500,000 bd ft of timber were placed monthly at a direct supply cost of $1.00 per ton of ore mined. Late in 1959, following a slightly improved position in the tungsten market, company management decided that, by changing the mining method, the operation could be economically feasible. The major premise in this decision was that a reduction of from 25 to 30% of the mining costs could be achieved by the conversion of the mining method from square-sets to horizontal cut and fill. Reopening of the mine began in February 1960, Full production has now been reached and overall mine productivity has been doubled.

For many years, the combined efforts of machinery manufacturers and mine operators have endeavored to achieve greater productivity from the men involved and the machinery and capital invested, by developing methods to drill blast holes more effectively. Obviously, this means much more than simply developing a drill that will drill a single hole faster. Considerable attention over these years has also been given to methods of carrying and positioning the drilling machine on versatile jumbos, whereby the man's time can he better utilized by the faster drilling machines. Likewise, the art of blasting to utilize the holes that were drilled to achieve the maximum amount of fragmented ore and the methods of moving the broken ore have also progressed. But each phase of the production cycle just described must be made to balance with the other phases of the work. Obviously, major breakthroughs in only one phase don't always generate more "rock in the box" per manshift. Yet, through the persistent effort of the machinery developers and the researchers, the progressive attitudes of mine managers, backed by corporate capital investments, and battle after battle at the operating level, progress is made. Then, if the innovated system is good enough to "stick", in a few years it becomes the system that the newer method must replace, after the same repeated struggle. This is the situation that many mine operators find themselves in today, Looking at their production cycle, which is assumed to be efficient and balanced between drilling, blasting and materials moving capabilities, they tend to guard any visable disruption of the balance of that day's production, and many would prefer to maintain the status quo indefinitely. Based on the limiting-equilibrium analysis of roof processive caving in hanging wall caving method and the critical medium column theory, a new model of subsidence prediction caused by sublevel caving mining method was proposed in this study, considering the drawing influence and the dynamic process of filling granular media. Meanwhile, the distribution rules for lateral pressure with different orebody dip were studied under drawing ore, and subsequently complemented the model. This model indicated that the surface subsidence scope decreased as the unit weight of crack rock and the orebody dip increased. In addition, the height of critical medium column showed a decreasing trend as cohesion of rock mass, the internal friction angle and the unit weight of rock mass. Also, the method of predicting the scope of surface subsidence in the Dabeishan Iron Mine was applied. The results showed that the relative errors are less than 9% and the prediction method could be used in practical application.

"This study explores froth flotation and selective flocculation methods to recycle waste phosphors containing several rare earth elements, namely, yttrium (Y), europium (Eu), cerium (Ce) and terbium (Tb). The effects of the presence or absence of collector and of flocculant and their dosages, as well as the pH, were investigated. Reverse flotation resulted in concentrates with grade of 27.03 percent and recovery rate of 71.36 percent, while flocculation resulted in concentrates with grade of 31.43 percent and recovery rate of 91.28 percent. The flotation and flocculation behaviors were further analyzed by X-ray diffraction analysis, zeta potential measurements, particle size distribution and other methods. The successful separation of rare earth minerals by flotation was attributed to the selective adsorption of the collector onto quartz, making it particularly recoverable by reverse flotation so as to be separated from the valuable materials. The analysis of the particle aggregation process indicated that its better flocculation performance was due to the selective adsorption of flocculants onto the unwanted materials, enlarging the flocculant sizes by forming aggregations and facilitating the separation of rare earth minerals from waste materials based on different settling rates. IntroductionBecause waste phosphors pose the problems of heavy environmental burden and high risk to human health (Hu and Cheng, 2012) as a result of containing heavy metals such as mercury and manganese (He et al., 2006; Lucas and Emery, 2006), they have received added attention as urban mining resources for extracting rare earth elements (REEs) like yttrium (Y), europium (Eu), cerium (Ce) and terbium (Tb).At present, chemical processes such as acid leaching, alkali fusion, roasting and extraction are the primary methods for recovering REEs from waste phosphors (De Michelis et al., 2011; Li et al., 2012; Li, 2010). With these strategies, phosphors can be effectively decomposed and their REEs extracted. After the removal of impurities, the REEs can be efficiently precipitated by adding an H2C2O4 solution (Porob et al., 2012). Although relatively high recovery rates are achieved, those processes entail high energy consumption and can cause severe environmental pollution."

Physicochemical properties of copper electrolytes are a strong fundamental consideration in electrodeposition processes during electro-purification and recovery of copper. Their influence extends to mass transfer as well as energy consumption during the electrodeposition process. In this study, the influence of electrolyte composition on electrolyte physicochemical properties was investigated to review the existing literature data. This review of data is considered necessary as more and more electrowinning models are being developed for process prediction and optimisation and a need of such data is required for accurate prediction of physicochemical properties. The major components of importance to the formation of smooth high-quality and high-purity copper cathodes at optimum current efficiency are considered the species in solution. These include Cu ions, Fe ions (major impurity), H2SO4, and a smoothing agent additive. A 5-factor, 2- and 3-level experimental design was employed to determine the effect of copper (35 and 45 g/l), sulphuric acid (160 and 180 g/l), iron (1, 3, and 6 g/l), polyacrylamide additive (2, 5, and 10 mg/ l), and temperature (45 and 55 °C) on electrolyte density, conductivity, and the diffusion coefficient in synthetic copper electrowinning electrolytes. The major species in a copper electrowinning electrolyte are found to be the most relevant for prediction of physicochemical properties. These results indicate that relatively simple empirical models are sufficient for modelling of the electrolyte domain in electrowinning, without the need for the generation of vast amounts of complex experimental data.

Many underground instabilities, such as excessive shield loading and roof falls, occur at longwall faces causing safety problems and production losses. Such instability problems are directly related to roof conditions which can be categorized using geological information. . However, most geologic information describing anomalies and variations of immediate and main roofs are not available before mining resulting in unexpected problems in a longwall face. It is apparent that the evaluation of these geologic anomalies provides a great benefit for longwall stability. The purpose of this study is to evaluate roof categories associated with geological anomalies employing fuzzy set theory. The evaluation is based on real-time monitoring information, such as shield leg pressure, developing load on shields, intervals of periodic weighting, and the ratio of developing loads during periodic to normal times. This paper introduces the application of fuzzy set theory for characterizing roof conditions and evaluating of roof similarities.
