American Electric Power Company (AEP operates 31 coal mines in three states, and some 26 electric generating stations (19 coal-fired) located in the Ohio River Basin. Normally the system burns over 36,071,600 tonnes (40,000,000 tons) of coal and generates in excess of 3.6 X 1018 J (100 billion kwh) of electricity per year. In 1975, AEP, in response to the progressively more stringent air quality requirements of the clean air act, acquired large low-sulfur reserves in Carbon County, Utah (Figure 1. Location Map). Price River Coal Company (PRCC) is the operator OF this multi-seam complex, which is part of the Book Cliffs coalfield at an elevation exceeding 1,829 m (6,000 ft.). The topography is mountainous and divided by numerous canyons. Flat areas are at a premium (Figure 2. Castle Gate Area). Modern high production longwall mining takes in some top and bottom waste, and in this particular operation, it amounts to about 14% of the ROM tonnage.

Introduction ASARCO's Ray Operations include an open-pit copper mine in the Mineral Creek Mining District of Pinel County. The district is located in east central Arizona, 132 km (82 miles) southeast of Phoenix, AZ, and 126 km (78 miles) north of Tucson, AZ. The mine lies 8 km (5 miles) north of the Gila River in Mineral Creek Valley, between the Tortilla Mountains to the west and the Dripping Springs Range to the east. The rich copper deposits of the Mineral Creek mining district were first noted by a US Army Officer in 1847. The Ray Copper Company was the first major operation in the area. The company was named after the Ray mining claim, which was one of the earliest recorded claims. After decades of sporadic and unsuccessful mining ventures, the Ray Consolidated Mining Company was formed in 1910. The company introduced one of the first successful block caving operations in the world. In 1933, the Kennecott Copper Corporation acquired the Ray Consolidated Mining Company and continued operation of the mine under the same name until 1943, when the property was renamed the Ray Mines Division of Kennecott. Underground mining continued until 1955, when the mine was converted to an open pit operation. In November 1986, ASARCO Inc. purchased the Ray Mines Division and related facilities from Kennecott. The purchase also included the Hayden concentrator and the Ray Smelter, located approximately 32 km (20 miles) from the Ray Mine. This paper summarizes the 54,400 tpd (60,000 stpd) in-pit crusher and overland-conveying system and the 24,200 tpd (30.000 stpd) copper SAG concentrator and tailings disposal system constructed at ASARCO's Ray Complex - Ray Operations. General description of facilities The Ray concentrator includes a sulfide SAG concentrator, a "relocatable" in-pit primary-crushing plant and overland-conveyor system, a concentrator tailings-disposal system and plant ancillary facilities, The major elements of the project include: • A relocatable Fuller-Traylor in-pit 1524-mm (60-in) x 2261-mm (89-in) primary gyratory crusher at the 442 m (1450 ft) mine elevation. The crushing plant has a nominal capacity of 54,400 tpd (60,000 stpd) of sulfide ore. • A 1524-mm (60-in) wide x 1253-m (4110-ft) long overland belt conveyor, which runs from the in-pit crushing facility to a transfer station serving both the Ray Concentrator and the existing Hayden concentrator railroad load-out facility. • A 1524-mm (60-in) wide x 152-m (500-ft) long stackerbelt conveyor, which delivers a nominal 27,200 tpd (30,000 stpd) of ore from the transfer station to a 23,600 t (26,000 st) live-capacity coarse-ore stockpile serving the Ray Concentrator. • A nominal 27,200-tpd (30,000-stpd) concentrator, including semiautogenous grinding, flotation, copper concentrate filtration and associated plant ancillary facilities. • A tailings disposal system. Flotation tailings are pumped from the Ray Concentrator to a 122-m (400-ft) diam. thickener, located 4.8 km (3 miles) southeast of the Ray Concentrator site. The thickener overflow is pumped to two 76.2-m (250-ft.) diam. concrete process-water reservoirs. The thickener underflow, at 45% solids, is pumped to a new tailings disposal site located at Elder Gulch. • An HDPE-lined temporary-containment area to collect material from Ray Concentrator plant upsets and local storm-water run-off from a 100-year, 24-hour rain event. •A reclaim-water system from the Elder Gulch tailing pond area to the Ray Concentrator. • A 610-mm (24-in.) diam. x 31.9-km (19.2 mile) long fresh-water pipeline from the Hayden fresh-water-well field system to the Ray Concentrator. The overall process design criteria for the new Ray Concentrator is based on a nominal throughput of 27,200 tpd (30,000 stpd) of ore at 90% plant availability. However, based on the maximum performance capacity of the installed grinding equipment, it may be possible to achieve a sustained operating level in excess of 36,300 tpd (40,000 stpd) when processing soft ores. Reservoir properties including porosity and permeability distributions in longwall coal mine gobs have direct application to modeling the flow patterns and gas distributions in the gobs. Proper assessment of these distributions is required to assess gob gas hazards such as spontaneous combustion and explosive methane mixtures and to optimize gob gas venthole operation and nitrogen inertization. Determining the reservoir properties is difficult given that the gob is inaccessible and direct measurements cannot be easily taken. Several techniques have been used by previous researchers and will be discussed. This paper will present the methodology used to model the gob compaction by simulating the sequential extraction of coal. Two Western US coal mines were used for case studies. By determining volumetric strain, the porosity and permeability distributions in the gob can be calculated. The geo-mechanical model predicts an axisymmetric volumetric strain distribution with a steeper slope near the start-up room and a shallower slope near the active face.

Extracting lunar ice, to be processed into pure water or hydrolyzed into oxygen and hydrogen, faces many challenges. On the Moon icy-regolith deposits that contain up to 10% water are found within Permanently Shadowed Regions (PSR) at both lunar poles, where temperatures approach -220 ⁰C. NASA has identified several technology gaps that exist in developing these resources including: • Excavating large quantities of icy-regolith • Delivering large quantities of acquired resources • Hardware that is lightweight and energy efficient • Hardware that is reliable and durable. NASA uses public challenges to incentivize innovative approaches to closing these gaps. The Break the Ice Lunar Challenge provides over three million dollars in prize money to teams that compete in developing solution to mining the Moon. This paper describes the rules for this challenge and presents some of the proposed solution.

Regulatory pressure to mitigate the cement industry’s environmental impact has intensified recently, spurring innovation in low-carbon cement technologies. In the United States, cement production, consumption, and carbon emissions are accelerating. Despite this trend, the adoption of environmentally friendly dry clinker production technology with combined preheater-precalciner systems has surged from 53.3% in 2002 to 88.5% in 2019. Concurrently, reliance on wet technologies, known for their higher environmental impact, has dropped from 16.5% to 0.6% within the same period. This paper presents the results of our comprehensive study, utilizing over 100 years of industry data, to analyze these technological shifts and their environmental implications.

The potential use of prereduced pellets in the burden of the blast furnace continues to be a topic of interest. Several excellent papers have been written describing the theoretical and experimental rewards. (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) (9) Significant increases in iron output and substantial savings in coke consumption are major advantages over conventional iron oxide pellets. The savings are especially important in areas where good coking coal is at a premium. Lower handling and transportation costs may also be factors favoring prereduction. When considering the overall cost of making and smelting prereduced materials the optimum metallization level becomes significant. An analysis by Agarwal and Pratt of the thermodynamic aspects of blast furnace operation with all prereduced pellets shows that the criteria controlling coke consumption depends upon the degree of reduction and upon the percentage of oxygen (present as FeO) removed by solution loss.(8) The authors state that although the chances of obtaining large fuel savings are greatly improved when metallization is high, reduction to the highest degree, which is costly, may not result in the lowest energy requirement per ton of hot metal; thus, over reduction could possibly result in wasted energy in the blast furnace.

The problem of pollution of water by mine drainage is at least as old as the mining industry itself. However, research on the formation, composition, treatment, and abatement of mine water is a relatively recent historical event. At Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., acid mine drainage control has been an important area of work since 1944, at which time BCR began sponsorship of research at West Virginia University. The work at West Virginia University involved a detailed study of the acid mine drainage problem and led to the identification of iron oxidizing bacteria as important factors in the formation of acid mine water. The results of this research were summarized in 1954 by Temple and Koehler (1) who concluded that "no practical solution for the problem" of controlling acid mine drainage is yet known.?

Four underground respirable dust surveys were conducted to determine factors affecting belt entry dust levels and how using belt air to ventilate work areas affected dust exposures. Belt entry dust levels on the surveyed longwall and continuous miner section averaged 0.59 and 0.26 mg/m3, respectively. The stageloader/crusher contributed an additional 0.5 to 0.9 mg/m3 of dust to belt air, while the feederbreaker contributed 0 to 0.2 mg/m3 of dust. A 1000 ft (305 m) increase in belt entry length or a 200 to 500 tons/shift (181,000 to 454,000 kg/shift) increase in production resulted in roughly a 0.1 mg/m3 increase in dust. Using the belt entry as an intake entry on the continuous miner section appeared to reduce dust levels by 0.1 to 0.3 mg/m3 during cutting. Belt air was not used to ventilate the face on the longwall section.

In mechanized tunnelling operations performance, consumption and safety are main factors for jobsites. One of the most important components effecting these factors, especially in slurry TBM operations, are Slurry Treatment Plants (STPs). Inadequate/ suboptimally dimensioned and designed STPs create bottlenecks for tunnelling operation and jeopardize time schedules and performance. Inefficiently planned STPs could drastically increase consumption figures such as electrical power, bentonite, water and polymers, etc. Inaccurately selected and treated suspension properties can cause a high-risk potential for the whole job. This paper debates the relevant key parameters for STPs from start to finish of a project and its results in influencing factors from the manufacturer´s point of view.

Tailings transport system design is generally based on identifying the minimum and maximum process boundary conditions for pump selection and pipeline sizing. The approach is robust and well-proven. However, the approach has the potential to skew selections to operating scenarios that have a very low likelihood of occurring, such as the combination of high solids throughput and low tailings solids concentration. The approach can result in a tailings transport system design that is overly conservative. A probabilistic method-based approach captures the independent variability of design inputs and the combined likelihood of outcomes. This approach identifies the process conditions that have the highest likelihood of occurrence and are most applicable to equipment and pipeline selections. An outline of a probabilistic-based approach to tailings transport system design and the resulting selections is provided in this article. The probabilistic-based system design is compared to the outcomes from the traditional approach. The benefits and challenges to this approach are discussed and recommendations for utilizing this approach for tailings transport system design are provided.

A knowledge of airway friction factor (K-factor) is necessary to designing mine ventilation systems for least cost and optimum effectiveness. The friction factor used must be accurate and reliable to estimate correctly roadway resistances and pressure sources for required flows. Though the resistance to flow offered by mine airways has been an object of study over the last half century, no accurate relation has yet been established from which the prediction of the resistance of a projected airway can be made. In Kentucky, only limited and incomplete data on local K-factors are available. Therefore, there is a need for field investigations to determine these values in-situ for existing mining conditions. The author describes a study concerning K-factor that was carried out in ten coal mines, located in eastern and western Kentucky. The results of these investigations are presented in both tabular and graphical form.

The availability of accurate, timely information, coupled with predictive trend indicators, is a significant advance in narrowing the gap between claimed and planned production that is common to many mines, regardless of commodity. This paper provides an overview of a Mine Production Management System (MPMS) and explains how the system helps address the challenges listed above.

1, Introduction Location Kalengwa mine is located in the North Western Province of Zambia, 402 kilometre by unpaved road to the west of Kitwe, which is roughly in the centre of the Zambian Copperbelt, well known as one of the world's centres of copper mining. Its position is illustrated on the map of Africa in Figure 1 and on the map of Zambia in Figure 2. It is a mine of Roan Consolidated Mines Limited whose other properties, Mufulira, Luanshya, Chambishi and Chibuluma Mines, are all located on the Copperbelt. It is managed by the Chibuluma Division of the company. The rate of production from Kalengwa will vary from 12 000 to 17 000 tonnes of saleable copper a year over the next six years. Kalengwa did not exist as a place until the first prospecting parties and later the mine became established and the early working population was recruited entirely from small villages in the surrounding area as much as thirty miles away. The mining area consists of fourteen mining locations amounting to 3.35 square kilometres and the land may be used for any purpose connected with mining, including housing, wood cutting and other utilities. The whole area is, except for minor undulations, a fairly flat plateau with main rivers running from north to south and flood basins known as "dambos" located in a general east west direction. Vegetation is, with the exception of the grassy dambos, temperate forest with relatively light undergrowth. Game of great variety is prolific, as is the associated tsetse fly.

To facilitate effective land reclamation and comply with existing state regulations, surface coal mine operators have in recent years adopted new mining techniques and equipment utilization for steep-terrain mining. In contrast to direct spoiling with draglines or shovels, these new mining methods require some form of overburden haulage from the excavation face to the point of reclamation. Although current mining methodologies such as Block-Cut, Modified Block-Cut, and Mountaintop Removal with Head-of-Hollow Fills have proven effective in achieving reclamation objectives, some production problems have resulted from pit congestion and excessive equipment delays. Recognizing this problem, the United States Bureau of Mines contracted Skelly and Loy to design innovative mining concepts utilizing conveyor haulage in place of trucks, loaders, dozers and scrapers. Project objectives required definition of current bottlenecks and development of mining systems to: alleviate bottlenecks; increase production potential; facilitate additional resource recovery; enhance reclamation; reduce safety hazards; and improve mining economics. Successful completion of project goals within a four year program involves systematic implementation of the following separate work phases: 1) Develop Concepts for Block-Cut Mining Systems; 2) Determine the Economic and Technical Feasibility of Concepts; 3) Prepare Detailed Design and Specifications of Concepts; and 4) Prepare Specifications for Conducting Field Tests of the Most Promising Concepts. At the time of this publication, Phases 1 and 2 are finalized with Phase 3 efforts well underway.

The City of Santa Cruz Water Department is replacing the existing Newell Creek Dam inlet/outlet works at Loch Lomond Reservoir in the San Lorenzo Valley. The project will improve the City’s overall operational efficiency, improve system performance, and improve the safety and reliability of storage for the City’s drinking water supply. The project comprises new inlet works* (three new inlets that control and convey flows into and out of the reservoir, and an intake control building), an inlet/outlet tunnel with a 48-inch conduit to convey flows into and out of the reservoir, and a new outlet structure at the toe of the dam. The outlet structure includes a release point for energy dissipation of emergency drawdown flows, a connection to Newell Creek Pipeline, and beneficial releases into Newell Creek. The project also includes a new dam seepage collection and monitoring system and appurtenant structures such as a culvert bridge over the spillway plunge pool to improve access to the new outlet. Notable complex project components include in-water work to connect the new intake shaft pipes to the three new inlets. The project includes one major milestone with a work window regulated by environmental permits that could only be amended/ extended with approvals from those agencies. If not met, the milestone work would have caused significant delays (potentially up to one year) to the project.

Business development process. Throughout Cyprus Amax's early months in Russia, the company stayed focused on what was needed from a deposit for economic success. Cyprus Amax's reason for success in Russia is that all involved - its Russian partners, the workforce and expatriates - provided a focused effort that served the project as it worked through the tender process and the Russian regulations. The company developed an understanding of the regulatory process by working with solid, ethical partners. Infused into the Kubaka management structure were Russians with the knowledge to facilitate the process and a professional group of expatriates. Developing credibility and a solid rapport with the Russian mining authority was critical to the success of this venture. Identifying and gaining the trust of key Russian individuals was also critical during the early stages. Gaining their trust and building credibility was part of the process. These key Russians were brought to the United States to visit existing Cyprus Amax mines. These efforts proved valuable in building an understanding with the Russians about the kind of company Cyprus Amax is and the kind of efficient operations that it can run. This was a learning process for all parties. Fortunately, the company was dealing with intelligent and educated people.

A.C. Noble presents a clear and concise summary of the factors pertinent to a competent reserve evaluation of a mineral occurrence. However, I believe that he confuses the difference between a resource and a reserve. By definition, a reserve estimate includes all known economic, legal, mining, metallurgical and environmental factors impacting the recovery of the product(s) found in the deposit. A resource estimate, however, is an estimate of what is there - what is available for exploitation and should not include economic and other considerations. Only after defining the resource, its extent, location, physical and chemical properties, can an intelligent selection process begin of the extraction and processing technologies most appropriate to the circumstances encountered. The early and almost certainly inappropriate application of these often cookbook choices has probably lead many companies to walk away from good properties. (How many mines have been found in others rejects?) An example of the process is the early selection of metallurgical samples, after encouraging values are found in a few holes or surface samples, in an attempt to determine the economics of the prospect. Unfortunately, the sampler does not know how representative of the occurrence the sample is because he does not know what the deposit looks like. As a consequence, the property becomes saddled with a bad metallurgical sample that is often inappropriately used in evaluating the deposit which it does not represent.

Ground falls (roof and rib) have historically been responsible for nearly 50% of all fatalities in bituminous underground coal mines. In recent years, the number of some annual ground fall fatalities has approached zero, indicating that significant progress has been made. On the other hand, the twin disasters at Crandall Canyon in 2007, in which nine miners perished in violent coal bumps, provided a stark reminder that complacency is premature. One important success has been a great reduction in the number of miners killed inby roof supports. Throughout the 1990s, these accounted for nearly half of all roof fall fatalities, but there have just been two inby incidents since 2005. Progress has also been made in pillar recovery, where there has been just one fatal incident since 2005. On the other hand, more than 300 miners continue to be injured each year by rock falling from between supports and 100 more are injured by rib falls. Together, these two categories also account for a large percentage of recent ground fall fatalities available technologies such as roof screen, rib bolting and inside control roof bolters could reduce injury and fatality rates if they were used more widely. Further advances in these areas will likely be the next big advance in ground control safety.
