When deciding to deploy rescue teams underground the decision makers need to be able to determine that there won?t be an explosion whilst the rescue teams are underground. Previously general body concentrations in areas likely to be travelled were compared to explosive limits on a one off basis with no formal process looking at trends or other areas. A new approach is being adopted that takes into account the rate of change of gas concentrations with triggers set to enable a withdrawal of personnel prior to a possible explosion and influences such a barometric pressure changes. This paper explains the rationale behind the changes made and the advantages and implications of adopting such an approach.

The Andacollo gold mine is located near the town of Andacollo (population 14,000 people) in Chile’s region four. It is about 56km (35 miles) by paved road from the coastal city of La Serena. Santiago is about480 km (300 miles) south. Site elevation varies between 1,000 and 1,280 m(3,300 and 4,200 ft). The climate at the Andacollo site is moderate but arid. Average annual rainfall is only 130mm (5 in.). Because there is little rain and the temperature varies only a few degrees (14 to 24 C or 57 to 75F), there are no problems with freezing, solution dilution or pad saturation. The climatic conditions are ideal for heap leaching.

"The profile of the respondents was that of a professional responsible for communications, community relations or corporate social responsibility programs. By targeting a consistent professional profile it was possible to ensure that most respondents had a similar degree of responsibility and/or decision-making ability related to the application of communication technologies. The research attempted to be inclusive and attention was paid to interview respondents from both genders and from indigenous groups.4, 5 A codebook of 80 themes was developed that highlighted recurring topics; for example, codes were created to identify risks, benefits, policies and learning process of using social media and included topics that were repeatedly emphasized by respondents (i.e. age, efficiency and language). Both manifest coding (i.e. coding of the visible content, such as specific words) and latent coding (i.e. coding of underlying meanings) was undertaken (Creswell [13]). The codes were used in the qualitative analysis using ATLAS.ti software and network views were created to illustrate the relationship between major themes of this research. There are limitations to this research, largely related to the changing nature of the Internet and communication technologies. There is also a geographic limitation to the application of this research because most of the data was gathered primarily from Canadian sources.6 Different levels of Internet penetration, or limited access to computers or mobile devices, and low literacy rates may reduce the applicability of the research in countries with low Internet penetration. A more systematic process to selecting candidates may have helped bring balance to the final list of interview respondents. For example, most of the corporate respondents were from medium and large companies and there was not adequate representation of small mineral exploration companies. The research did not probe into social media applications by different business groups within the mining sector, such as smelting and processing."

The 26th international APCOM symposium, hosted by The Pennsylvania State University, was held Sept. 16 to 20, 1996 in University Park, PA. Conducted about every 18 months throughout the world, APCOM symposia focus on the Application of Computers and Operations Research in the Mineral Industry. The APCOM International Council is the governing body of the symposia and determines the symposium’s locations and sponsorships. This group is composed of the nine permanent (voting) members. They include the University of Arizona, Colorado School of Mines, Pennsylvania State University, Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration, Inc., Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Technical University of Berlin, Institution of Mining and Metallurgy and Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The three nonvoting members are Moscow Mining Institute, China Institute of Mining and Rudarski Mining Institute of Slovenia.

In the mineral industry, the objective of a mining venture is to extract, process, and market a mineral commodity in such a manner that the profit of the venture is maximized. In a mining venture, a company normally has control over mine production scheduling, the selection and location of processing facilities (mineral beneficiation plants, smelting plants, refineries, or blending facilities), processed ore blending, and the selection of markets. The flexibility of the above factors provides many alternatives to satisfy the needs of each market with regard to quantity and quality of ore. The purpose of this paper is to present a mathematical model for determining the alternative that yields the maximum profit. Production planning is generally concerned with the best utilization of fixed resources, more specifically, with the determination of production and inventory levels to meet fluctuating demand requirements. A mine can be any source of ore such as an entire mine, a production unit within a mine, or an independent supplier. The objective of production scheduling is to determine the times at which each mine will be used and to allocate a required level of production. Production planning and scheduling problems are intimately associated with the location of new and existing mines and processing facilities. Although the location of the mines is usually fixed, there can be considerable flexibility in locating new processing facilities, in the selection of the processing plant, and in blending the ore before and after processing.

One of the challenges in the development of mineral processing simulators is the modelling of liberation characteristics of particles produced by comminution circuits. Understanding the mineral characteristics of these particles is one of the keys to predicting their behaviour in separation circuits. While more fundamental research seeks to model the non-random breakage of ores this work examines whether we can move forward now by using observed characteristics of ores to model the composition of particles generated in comminution processes. The current work examines a range of ores and identifies which of these exhibit the pattern of similarity of composition for particles in a given size class that has been produced as the result of a variety of breakage conditions. The impact of mineralogy and texture on the evolution of liberation characteristics for both valuable and gangue minerals is discussed.

The status and outlook for mining, in your view. Minerals remain a major part of the world’s economic foundation. The fortunes of the mining industry rise and fall with general economic trends, but mining is no less important today on a global basis than it has been historically. Certainly, portions of the industry are critically depressed — domestic copper to name one area —but other sectors are prospering. Mineral consumption, both worldwide and in the United States, has increased steadily since the Great Depression, hitting all-time highs in 2000, the last year for which I have seen data. The highly developed economy in the United States tends to obscure the continuing importance of minerals here. But in less developed nations the critical nature of minerals is obvious and well accepted. In short, although there is no shortage of problems or challenges facing mining — there never has been — mining remains an essential business with great global opportunity.

Golden Sunlight Mines Inc. operates an open-pit gold mine and cyanidation plant about 11km (7 miles) northeast of Whitehall, MT. Golden Sunlight is a subsidiary of Placer Dome US Inc. Mining is accomplished with conventional open pit drilling, blasting and hauling methods. The mining rate is about 102 kt/d (113,000 stpd). Gold occurs as fine-grained disseminations in a pipe-shaped breccia and in immediately adjacent country rock. The ore body is low grade, averaging 2 g/t (0.059 oz per st) of gold. The metallurgical plant uses conventional carbon-in-pulp (CIP) technology. Daily throughput averages 6.5 kt (7000 st). Recoveries are enhanced through a sand tailing retreatment facility while a preaeration process reduces operating costs. The low grade ore dictates that maximum mill throughput at the desired grind size be maintained. Therefore, in October 1988, an Armco Autometrics (now Denver Autometrics) particle size monitor (PSM) 400 was commissioned. The PSM 400 is an on-line instrument. It measures particle size and percent solids in a slurry stream. The PSM pulls its own sample, deareates the sample and passes it through diametrically opposed ultrasonic sensors. The unit uses ultrasonic sound to measure the deareated slurry stream's particle size and percent solids.

Free cyanide has been successfully determined in ground and surface water by isolation using a microdiffusion technique followed by a pyridine-barbituric acid photometric finish. The determinable free cyanide includes hydrocyanic acid, ionic cyanide, and the cyanide of weak complexes such as cadmium, lead, manganese, and zinc cyanide. Complexes of copper, iron, nickel, and silver are sufficiently strong so the dissociation into free cyanide does not occur at the microdiffusion pH 7. Cyanate, sulfide, and thiocyanate do not interfere. Samples containing as little as 0.005 mg/L are successfully analyzed. The relative standard deviation is <10%. Samples stored at pH >I2 in the dark are stable at least three weeks.

Education in the mineral engineering professions is in the same flux and turmoil as is the entire minerals industry. Overcapacity in some areas, undercapacity in others, and the constant fear of substitution plague education as well as industry. The exercise in long-range planning that The Society of Mining Engineers has undertaken gives an excellent opportunity to examine the problems and the opportunities in minerals engineering education. Charge to the Committee The Educational Activities Committee was asked by the Long-Range Planning Commission (LRPC) to examine SME&apos;s future role with respect to "education policy, role and organization, education department, education board, continuing education, short courses, and extension courses." This examination is timely. It follows a reorganization of SME&apos;s Education Board designed to make the Board more efficient in its operation, more responsive to the needs of education, and more active in the setting of Society policy on education. In addition, the roller-coaster cycle of boom and bust experienced by the mineral industry in the last decade has been shared by the minerals schools and has created enrollment problems that need to be addressed promptly. Within SME there is much experience on educational issues to draw from and many problems to solve. Major Premise The committee is emphatic in espousing the philosophy that SME should support, in word and in deed, the highest possible standards that can be maintained by the minerals schools. As guardians of the various mineral engineering and scientific professions (geological engineering, geophysical engineering, mineral engineering, mineral processing engineering, and mining engineering), it is appropriate for the Society to be a watchdog for academic standards. One member of the committee put it succinctly, "We need to educate engineers and technologists, not muckers." A vital and profitable minerals industry needs professionals educated by good teachers, equipped with the most modern available methods, techniques, and knowledge, and challenged by their education to be innovative contributors to their chosen profession. Such education occurs only if it takes place in an institution that is vital and challenging. SME can enhance the quality of its membership if it works to maintain the standards of the schools that graduate new members. Education does not end with the award of a degree. It is appropriate for SME to strive for continued technical quality of its membership. To this goal, SME should maintain its attention to the process of licensing professional engineers, and it must continue and expand its efforts in continuing education for the membership. Recommendations for Action The following recommendations were submitted by the committee and then amended slightly by the full commission. The recommendations have support from the SME Board. • SME Education Coordinator and Staff Department of Education - Staff support for education should be provided by someone with experience in engineering education who would be appointed as SME Education Coordinator for all educational activities: accreditation, continuing education, student affairs, and liaison with mineral schools. The Board has approved an Education Coordinator and the position has been filled. • Advisory Committee on Education - SME should recognize, by amending its committee structure, that functions important to education are filled by SME-appointed representatives to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), its Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC), and Technology Accreditation Commission (TAC). It is suggested that these persons, plus the chairman of the Education Council, plus two other persons appointed by the SME Board, form an advisory committee on education. An intelligent supervisor using expert system tools and applied to a crushing plant has been developed with a structure based on a model of a human operator. It consists of a knowledge base containing a qualitative model of the process and a rules base with the heuristic logic used by an operator when supervising a plant. The simulation results obtained show the potential of this type of system to supervise the automatic operation of a plant. There has been very significant development in artificial intelligence over the last two decades. Within this development, two approaches can be distinguished, (Winston, 1984). The "model approach," in which the main objective is to understand and model the be¬havior of living systems. The second approach is the "engineering approach." Here, systems capable of performing tasks usually requiring human intelligence are created. As part of this latter approach, knowledge engineering and its main achievement, expert systems, have been developed. Expert systems arose from the need to incorporate the abilities of a human expert in solving realistic problems in which the conventional approach has great difficulties. The first successful applications of expert systems were in medical diagnosis, geophysics, and fault detection. However, since 1971, when Fu (1971; defined intelligent control as the inter action of artificial intelligence and automatic control, some significant developments in the use of artificial intelligence tools for process control have been achieved (Astrom, 1986; Pinto 1988; Fahrenkrog, 1988; and Porter 1987). The modern control theory has made important advances. And, although successful in some applications, it has failed to cope with the practicalities of many industrial processes. As a result, the automatic operation of a plant has been confined to a small region around a normal operating point and to periods without any great disturbance. One of the main reasons for this is the lack of accurate and structured knowledge of the processes involved. Despite this, operators applying their knowledge, experience, and a little intuition, often obtain good results controlling the plant in such situations. Considering the above, the next obvious step is to include similar reasoning capacities in a computational system. The development of such an expert supervisory system prototype applied to a mineral crushing plant is presented. Carbonate-hosted massive sulfide (60%) ores of the western Cordillera compose a distinct class of deposits although they vary widely in detail and perhaps genesis. They have been important sources of lead, zinc, copper, silver, gold, and more rarely, molybdenum, tin, and tungsten in complex mineral assemblages usually dominated by pyrite. They occur as concordant stratiform bodies, as discordant mantos, and as chimneys crossing tens of meters of section; many are associated with faults and breccia bodies. Environments of formation of carbonate hosts range from craton basin to shelf with ages from Proterozoic to Cretaceous; in many instances, dating has shown mineralization to be significantly younger than hosts. Temperatures of formation determined for many deposits are high (200°-400°) and many districts are centers of igneous activity manifested by dikes, sills, and stocks. However, direct cause and effect relationships have been difficult to establish. Many important problems attend the renewed interest and study of these deposits and include questions of metal-sulfur sources, metallization processes and histories, geological controls at all scales, and relationships to broader patterns of metallogeny.

Ammonium thiosulphate is a non-cyanide lixiviant for gold leaching. The major problem is the high reagent consumption. A combination of 0.3M (NH4)2S2O3, 0.03M CuSO4, 3M NH3 was used to leach a copper-bearing gold ore at pH 10.2 for 24 hours. 30 kg/t of thiosulphate was consumed. Oxygen and copper species were found to be responsible for thiosulphate decomposition. The thiosulphate consumption could be reduced to around 17 kg/t by adding chelating agent, reducing copper sulphate concentration to 0.001 M and replacing CuSO4 by NiSO4. The increase of pulp density might reduce the thiosulphate consumption to around 17 kg/t. By regulating the oxygen supply, the thiosulphate consumption could be reduced to 10 kg/t.

Since its development, the functional performance equation for ball milling (McIvor, 1988) has facilitated a new understanding of industrial circuit cause and effect relationships, leading to significant strides in operational performance. Success stories of this approach to plant circuit performance improvement are now too numerous to list. Finch and McIvor (circa 1986) also discovered that the functional performance mill grinding rate at the size of interest was the same cumulative grinding rate that is calculated from mill feed and discharge size distributions using a first-order rate equation. By calculating these cumulative grinding rates for all screen sizes, a complete ball mill model is generated (as used by Finch and Ramirez, 1981). Others in industry, Hinde and Kalala (2009), for example, have noted the same. Lacking the complexity needed to maintain their interest, most researchers have ignored this model, broadly opting instead for Epstein’s (1948) characterization of grinding as a chemical reaction, combining selection rate and breakage size distribution functions. The much simpler ball mill model has previously been incorporated into a proprietary circuit modeling program (McIvor, 2005) and used for plant improvement work (for example, see McIvor and Finch, 2007, and McIvor, 2014). Now, by combining this business-friendly ball mill model with optimization criteria from functional performance analysis, a circuit modeling system (including the needed supplementary steps to assure successful plant implementation of circuit design changes) is at the disposal of every plant metallurgist, grinding equipment/ material provider and circuit designer.

Many underground projects now include preparation of a Risk Register through planning and design as a tool for project and risk management. There is still significant discussion within the industry as to whether and how to best present the Risk Register through the bidding process and the construction phase of a project. While the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works recommends this approach of continuity in risk management procedures, it is silent on the specifics of how this should be achieved. This paper will explore the perceived benefits and disbenefit of including the project Risk Register with bid documents; format and content that should be transferred and lessons learned using the case history of bidding and early construction phase of the Bi-County Water Tunnel in Montgomery County, MD

Mine planners must select a single pit for design with the knowledge that the grades on which this selection is made are uncertain. This uncertainty is often ignored through the use of deterministic models of grade. This makes the mine planner?s job simpler but does not necessarily lead to the ?correct? or ?best? selection. Grade uncertainty is typically modelled with conditional simulation which generates multiple possible realisations of grade that are equally probable (or improbable) to occur. Methods for incorporating grade uncertainty into mine planning to date have either been perceived as being too complicated, not accessible or too time consuming. This paper proposes a simple and efficient modelling approach to incorporating conditional simulation into pit optimisation, which would be able to be applied in currently commercially software. An example for Resolute Mining Ltd?s Syama Gold Project in Mali shows the range of ore, grade and value outcomes associated with generating pits through a variety of methods.

Granitic Pegmatite deposits are the chief source of commercial feldspar, micas, lithium minerals, tantalum-columbium, beryl, and certain types of kaolin. The output from pegmatite mines in the United States is small compared to other mineral products in terms of bulk or value, and much of it comprises only minor metals and nonmetals. Nevertheless, pegmatite minerals play a vital part in our domestic industrial economy, particularly in the ceramic and electrical industries. Numerous special purpose uses also are important, even though they require small quantities of raw materials. In recent years, realizing the potential importance of the pegmatite minerals, the U.S. Geological Survey, the United States Bureau of Mines, several state Bureaus of Mines, and a few private companies have carried on extensive programs of pegmatite studies in the New England and southeastern states, in the Black Hills area of South Dakota, in the Rocky Mountain region of Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico, and in various parts of Washington, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and California. Currently, some of the pegmatite minerals such as micas and spodumene are selectively separated by the flotation process. To a lesser extent a few plants are selectively floating feldspar and quartz. Much of the credit for the above progress goes to the fine work done by U.S. Bureau of Mines (1), and companies such as Foote Minerals (2). Additional research efforts by the New Mexico Bureau of Mines (3) has successfully demonstrated selective separation of micas, beryl, spodumene, lepidolite, microlite, quartz and feldspar from a complex Pegmatite containing all these minerals. Since the nature of the mineralization of various valuable components of a pegmatite deposit is such that selective separation of some of these can be carried out at a coarse size using the Heavy Media Separation technique, it was felt that such a system should be investigated for selective preconcentration of their minerals. It was also felt that of all the :MS systems available, the DYNA WHIRLPOOL (DWP) device which allows a close control and adjustment of specific gravity should provide a means of achieving the above goal. Once the desired preconcentration of one or more of the pegmatite mineral assemblage is achieved, the available selective flotation techniques should provide effective recovery of various minerals into marketable products. This paper presents technical and economic aspects of selective preconcentration of some of the pegmatite minerals followed by selective flotation to produce marketable products.

ISO 9000 is a system of quality standards that originated in Europe in the 1980s and has since been widely adopted by manufacturing companies throughout the world. The ISO 9000 standards have received less attention in the minerals industry. But, in part as a result of customer pressure, a trend is beginning to emerge for minerals producers to seek ISO certification. This is especially true among producers of industrial minerals. In early October 1994, SME&apos;s Industrial Minerals Division held a conference "ISO 9000 - uniting industrial mineral producers and consumers into quality partnerships," in Nashville, TN to bring people from the industry together to talk about their experiences with ISO 9000. William J. Miles, of Bentonite Corp. Inc., and A. Frank Alsobrook, of Alsobrook and Co., were cochairmen of the meeting. In his introductory remarks, Miles noted, "ISO 9000 is more than a quality program. It is a quality philosophy. Appropriately imple-mented, it is a contract between the supplier and the customer. It leads to continuous quality improvement and reduced manufacturing costs."

INTRODUCTION A program to insure adequate talent for development and management of our mineral resources entails two equally important and interrelated aspects: 1) attracting and retaining promising student talent, and 2) providing a first-rate education for those entering careers in mineral science and engineering. Manpower shortages have eased in many areas of engineering, particularly in those areas dependent directly or indirectly upon government contracts in space and war programs. However, in the minerals industry the needs still remain critical. As increasing concern over preservation of the environment has developed, the political and social reaction was to seek out major offenders, to look for "whipping boys" -- and the mineral industry was, and had been, an offender. It was there for everyone to take pictures, it couldn&apos;t be covered up, and the Department of the Interior lashed away in the beautiful and popular brochures: Quest for Quality, The Third Wave, The Population Challenge, and Surface Mining and Our Environment (Ravaged Land). The Sierra Club, the Field and Stream magazine, TV, and daily news media added their lashes. In the minds of our social-conscious youth the mineral industry took on the image of "exploiters" of natural resources; "polluters" of streams, lakes, and the atmosphere; "despoilers" of wilderness areas and scenic beauty -- a plague to combat, rather than an exciting challenge that entailed exploration of the remote, conquering of the primitive, and developing of the undeveloped. Enrollments declined and many traditional mineral engineering curricula were abolished or Integrated into other stronger engineering departments to meet student-faculty ratio requirements.

Potential improvements in equipment and methods on the near-term horizon are discussed. The problems and potentials that lie in the long-term future of oil shale mining are examined in light of the demands which must be met by this developing technology.
