This manuscript aimed to examine the impact of operating parameters on the wet grinding of talc in a vertical-type stirred media mill. Within the scope of the research, the effects of operating parameters including media filling ratio, solid mass fraction, grinding media size, and grinding time were studied. The findings were assessed based on the product particle size (d50, d10), surface area (Sw), and energy consumption (Em). As a result of the present research, the following optimum grinding test conditions were determined: 65% media filling ratio, 40% solid mass fraction, 1 mm grinding media size, and 120 min grinding time. After determining the optimum grinding conditions, the Box–Behnken statistical design was used to determine the effect of parameter interactions on the d50 size. The media filling ratio was found to significantly affect the decrease in d50 compared to the other two parameters. Furthermore, the minimum d50 size was also achieved under optimum grinding conditions.

This paper documents the growth and projects the future of Green Diamond Sand Products. Since1954, Green Diamond, located in Riddle, Oregon, has been producing sand from granulated nickel slag for use in various markets. Through the years, the company has seen several changes from its ownership to its product lines. In 1991, Green Diamond was producing abrasive sand at a rate of about 30,000 tons per year. It was at this time that Green Diamond became part of Glenbrook Nickel Company. Over the next eight years, Green Diamond would quadruple its production to over 140,000 tons while moving into three new markets, as well. Green Diamond is now producing sand for use in the abrasive, foundry, construction, and roofing industries. In 1998, Green Diamond again found itself under new, private ownership. With plans on developing agricultural sand and spent abrasives recycling, the future of Green Diamond appears to be one of further expansion coupled with diversification of its product lines.

Zinc ferrite ( ZnFe2O4) is a by-product of non-ferrous metal production and is considered a promising source of raw zinc. The most efficient way to extract zinc from its ferrite is via acidic extraction, specifically leaching by hydrochloric acid. A comparative study of synthetic zinc ferrite hydrochloric acid leaching in isopropanol, aqueous, and the mixed solvent was performed. Zinc ferrite was obtained by sintering a zinc and iron (III) oxide mixture. Crushed samples were subjected to leaching in 1 M HCl at 323, 333, and 353 K and pulp density of 1 g/100 mL. The dissolution of zinc and iron into solution in organic media reached 77% at 353 K, while in an aqueous environment this value was 65%. The activation energy of 70.0 kJ/ mol was found for the leaching process in an isopropanol environment, which is lower than that in an aqueous solution by 15%. The more efficient leaching effect of isopropanol is attributed to the lower dielectric constant of the alcohol which increases the affinity of chloride anions for zinc and iron cations at leaching.

Based on laboratory structure analyses, a pilot plant investigation was undertaken to evaluate a Michigan conglomerate native copper ore. Comminution or sized feed was accomplished using wet, closed circuit autogenous grinding with and without crushing of the recirculating load. Coarse metallics were concentrated in two stages of jigging with fine metallic copper being recovered in a three-stage xanthate flotation circuit. With a feed averaging 2.09 % Cu, copper recovery ranged from 86-93 % Cu with an average grade of 55.5 % Ca. An evaluation of the processing flowsheet is made in terms of pertinent independent, dependent, and external variables and design factors. Rate equations are developed to describe the grinding and flotation circuits separately as well as the entire circuit as a whole. Performance equations for the overall operation and for the unit operation of autogenous grinding alone are developed in terms of suitable capacity, efficiency and energy consumption terms. Thus, the effects of feed rate, recirculating load and flowsheet design can be rationally evaluated. Energy consumption for various conditions in the pilot plant is compared to the laboratory value. Additionally, size and scale up factors are discussed. Recommendations are made for further studies to be undertaken to further quantify the ore characteristics and the nature of the autogenous grinding operation. However, the feasibilty of beneficiation of this type of native copper ore by means of an autogenous grinding/jigging/flotation circuit is clearly established.

Performance of tunnel boring machines - usually expressed in terms of penetration per revolution - is determined by relations between machine thrust and torque, head diameter and rock strength. It can be shown that for a given machine power and head diameter there is only one rock strength at which the machine performs optimally. In weaker rocks the available torque limits performance and in stronger rocks, the available thrust. Performance data shows that, historically, machines have been designed to cut weaker rocks. Optimization of thrust is required to improve performance in stronger rocks.

The National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum (NMHF&M) will celebrate its 25th anniversary on Sept. 22, 2012 when the 2012 class is inducted during a special ceremony in Las Vegas, NV in conjunction with MINExpo 2012. The NMHF&M will induct four men representing the equipment manufacturing, minerals exploration, copper and coal sectors of the mining industry. The diverse cross-section of mining industry giants joining the hall of fame include Glen A. Barton, J. David Lowell, Samuel Newhouse and John Cleveland Osgood. They will join 214 other mining industry pioneers when they are formally inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame at the 25th Silver Anniversary Induction Banquet & Ceremony. These men were selected for being visionaries, leaders and ambassadors within their own sectors and across the industry at large.

During its modem era, the southern Powder River Basin (PRB) in Wyoming has grown from meager origins in the early 1970s to become one of the most important coal-producing regions in the United States. In 1993, production and sales of southern Powder River Basin coal exceeded 190 Mt (209 million st), or about 20% of the US coal industry. Despite the remote location of the PRB relative to its potential markets, most coal industry observers anticipate continued strong growth to meet utility compliance plans for Phases I and II of the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA). This article is an overview of supply and demand issues concerning the marketing of southern PRB coal. It reviews the events leading up to the recent run on spot coal and offers a forecast of demand and prices.

In our work as health physicists*, we do a lot of public speaking and interaction with the public on issues related to development of uranium mining and milling (?uranium recovery?) in the US. Understandingly, the public has important concerns about this. Accordingly, this paper is presented in a ?question and answer? format in which we have tried to capture what are some of the most common concerns we hear from citizens and address them. We have attempted to do so based on the best scientific information we have, representing information well documented in peer-reviewed scientific literature and consensus positions from both national and international scientific standard setting bodies and related committees. We have included some of the more important of these scientifically-based references to support the information provided. "Industrial wasteland is a typical element of the landscape of all the industrialised regions in Europe. There are many examples from Poland as well as from other European countries that post-industrial sites have been undergone natural colonisation and succession to establish in some cases ecosystems of greater biological diversity than the original ecosystems. The post-industry sites regardless of any reclamation carried out, undergo natural successional processes. The respective biological diversity (number of species, and number of plant assemblages) reflects the micro-variety of the specific habitat. This paper summarizes the results of investigations, which have been carried out since 1989 on coal mine water sedimentation pools in the Upper Silesia Industry Region. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the diversity of spontaneous plant communities recorded on post-industrial waste sites. In the course of the long time fieldwork, plant assemblages representing nine phytosociological groups have been identified."

1.0 PROLOG Since the "end" of the Cold War, revolutionary new research and commercial remote sensing capabilities are being developed that will dramatically change the way we map the earth and address its environmental problems. The technology challenge is not the growth of new environmental remote sensing technologies themselves. It is, rather, how these new innovative observing systems can be accepted and used to the benefit of both the regulatory and the mining communities in the light of present concerns about unknown risks of discovery and liability. Introduction During the past 10 years, energy costs in mining have risen from about 4% to as much as 25% of total production cost. When combined with declining ore grades, these costs exert inordinate stress on mine productivity. Industrial engineering techniques have traditionally been aimed at improving manufacturing facilities productivity, but they have been applied to mining as pressure for productivity improvement has increased. These techniques can perform four useful functions for mining operations by improving methods, equipment selection procedures, energy use through scheduling, and managing energy costs rather than being managed by them. This article discusses some of the standard techniques for productivity improvement, and how they can be adapted to perform these four functions. Pre-Production The best time to seek high productivity is when a mine is being planned. During pre-production, when most options are still open, an optimum mine design is achievable. At this time, major equipment selections are made, the layout, material handling systems, and processes are designed, and critical energy source decisions are made. By including explicit energy cost projections, decisions can be made that will save significant amounts of money per ton of ore over the life of the mine. Attention can also be given to often overlooked details such as lighting. Some of the same tools used in new mine planning are applicable to productivity improvements at an existing plant. These tools are the charting and modeling methods that have been developed by industrial engineers over the past 75 years. Energy Consumption Before any analysis of energy consumption can be performed, preliminary work is necessary to find the kind of energy used, how much it costs the plant, and when electrical peaks occur. Past bills should be examined to determine the monthly consumption rate and the cost of each energy type. These data should be adjusted to remove effects caused by production fluctuations or weather. Knowing when electrical peak demands occur is necessary because these determine either the electrical capacity needed or the amount that must be bought. At $500-$800 per kW for construction or $5-$15 per kW per month for purchase, they represent a significant cost. By the time these data are collected, planners should be aware of the importance of energy in the total cost of mine operation, and should have the most crucial time data for electrical peak demand. Flow Process Chart Reducing costs can be accomplished by a thorough look at mine systems and how altering one system causes changes in others. By developing and exercising models of production processes outward to the transportation of the final product, otherwise obscured weaknesses may become apparent. There are tools available for analyzing the mine and its associated systems; one of the most useful is the flow process chart. The flow process chart gives a system analysis of a production procedure by classifying all actions into one of five types: operations, inspections, transportation, delays without paperwork, and delays with paperwork. Operation: In an operation, the nature of something is changed. Examples are blasting, washing coal, and processing matter. Denoted by 0. Inspection: Examining an object for identification or to measure some attribute. Examples are determining whether a drill hole is deep enough, deciding how far to cut under an unsupported roof when operating a continuous miner, or checking the lubricant level on a truck. Denoted bye. Transportation: Moving an object from one place to another. Examples are transporting overburden, moving coal on a conveyor belt, and pumping water. Denoted by =>. Delay without paperwork: A delay that is an inherent part of the system. Examples include idle time of a continuous miner while waiting for shuttle cars or for roof bolting, crushed ore in a storage area waiting for grinding and flotation, and people from one craft waiting for another craft to finish. Denoted by D. Delay with paperwork: A delay that can be terminated only by some written authorization. Examples are coal that cannot be removed until authorized by a bill of sale and transportation orders, personnel records, maintenance, or spare parts. Denoted by V. In practice, the flow process chart is completed after data collection and a detailed examination of the process. Data collection is needed to answer questions on distance, quantity, and time for each of the operations. As the analysis is being performed, each step of the process is subjected to these questions: • Why is the step necessary? • What is being moved? • When does the step take place, and why?

The introduction of computer technology to the mining industry has produced many benefits for the mining engineer. The most significant is the dramatic increase in productivity realized by the individual user. This is important during times of competitive market conditions. Software for the minerals and energy industries has evolved substantially over the past decade. But even today it remains difficult to find a system that features the flexibility and integration capabilities to effectively (and cost-effectively) handle the needs of professionals in each phase of the mining industry - from exploration to reclamation. Several national software developers are now addressing this challenge. One Denver-based company, MINEsoft Ltd., offers a software package that is currently being used in each phase of the mining industry. The basic technology used in MINEsoft's database management system was developed in the 1960s. But during these early years of the computer industry, most of the technology was available only on mainframe computers, and then only as separate entities. MINEsoft's system unifies these various systems in one package that can be used on most computers manufactured today. Database Management System TECHBASE is a flexible, integrated database management system designed specifically for technical applications. The system features a database manager with no practical limit to the amount of data it can store, retrieve, and manipulate, according to the company. TECHBASE in¬cludes Applications Packages (TAPs) designed to meet the needs of professionals in a host of industries. Clients use the TECH BASE system to prepare many reports, including important EPA information. The package reduces data to a manageable level and enables users to increase productivity with a smaller staff. Mining engineers no longer need to do things by hand. What used to be a day's work can be accomplished in an hour or two. Exploration "Using the TECHBASE system to generate maps has probably saved us the expense of three or four draftsmen," says Ralph Fitch, regional manager and senior staff geologist with Chevron Resources in Portland, ME. "The system has great flexibility. You can treat it much like a spreadsheet. If you are halfway through with a particular project, the system allows you to add fields and calculations with ease but without starting over." Fitch uses TECHBASE for the "straightforward" plotting of results and generation of geochemical and geophysical profiles. "In exploration," he says, "these are the two key elements ... the generation of maps and data profiles. The system allows you to plot as many elements and variables in these areas that you like." Other aspects are important, too, says Fitch, including drill hole sections. "We use all the basic capabilities the system provides in the complete package," he explains. The classifiers on the primary grinding circuit at Cyprus Sierrita have been upgraded from 0.66 m (26 in) diameter hydrocyclones to 0.84 m (33 in) diameter hydrocyclones. This has resulted in a 4.3 % (11 t/h) (12 standard tons/hour) increase in mill throughput while producing a flotation feed which contains 4.8% less +300 micron (48 mesh Tyler screen size) material. This reduction in flotation feed particle size has increased copper (CU) recovery by 0.8 %. Various grinding circuit relationships were evaluated. These relationships include circulating load versus throughput, horizontal versus vertical cyclone configuration, and the effect of cyclone components on performance. We conclude that the improvements achieved are due to a shift in the overflow size distribution created by a cyclone diameter more suited to our operation, and by eliminating the cyclone capacity constraint in the grinding circuit.

The Wyoming bentonite industry finished 2005 with strong growth. For most of the markets, demand exceeded supply. The industry continues to be heartened by the strength of its longtime markets, oilfield and iron ore pelletizing markets. But overall, all of the major markets enjoyed good to excellent commercial conditions. Growth at the macroscale was fueled by the continued strong domestic economy, by the exchange rate of the U.S. dollar in global markets and by strong worldwide global demand. As result, two new greenfield operations are in the early stage of development in the Wyoming region for the first time in more than two decades.

A Method to Calculate Hydrodynamic Loads on Underground Bulkheads Bulkheads are structures built in openings in underground mines to impound water, preventing the water from entering the active mine workings. These structures not only have to be designed to withstand the static, hydraulic pressure, but also the dynamic or seismic pressure, which would be generated by an earthquake. Bulkheads can be considered underground dams. Unlike dams on the surface, bulkheads are often subjected to hydraulic heads that exceed the heights of the bulkheads. Theodor von Karman in 1933, and Westergaard earlier, developed the equation by which the hydrodynamic pressures on surface dams could be calculated. Civil engineering handbooks of today contain this equation. In this paper, using the methodology developed by von Karman and Westergaard, the authors have developed an equation by which the hydrodynamic forces on bulkheads could be calculated when the hydraulic head exceeds the height of the bulkhead.

MINExpo International is billed as the largest exposition for the mining and mineral processing industry. And the 2012 edition, scheduled for Sept. 24-26 in Las Vegas, NV, is no exception. Put on by the National Mining Association (NMA), attendance at this year?s show is expected to be significantly more than the 38,500 who attended the last MINExpo in 2008. The exhibit will also be quite a bit larger in 2012 than it was at the previous MINExpo. More than 1,800 companies, representing more than 30 countries, will fill the Las Vegas Convention Center. The more than 850,000 sq ft of exhibit space will include the North and Central halls as well as South Halls Nos. 3 and 4. And the Silver Lot outside of the front door, under construction in 2008, will be filled with more exhibitors. The 2008 show attracted about 1,220 exhibitors occupying more than 600,000 sq ft of exhibit space.

Currently six economic heavy mineral deposits are known on the Penholoway Terrace. These are (from south to north) the Green Cove Springs Mine (GCS), Boulogne Mine, Folkston Mine, Mission, Lulaton, and Ludowici. The GCS deposit is located to the west of Highway 17 between the towns of Green Cove Springs and Palatka in the state of Florida and has been mined since 1972. To the north, the erosion created by Black Creek restricts the northern extension of the orebodies and to the south a karst depression and erosion by the St. Johns River restrict southern extensions. The deposit is 20 miles long and up to 4.5 miles wide. Deposit thickness is from 5 feet up to 45 feet. The deposit is a series of regressive barrier island sequences deposited during the Pleistocene along the ancient Penholoway and Wicomico shorelines. The initial transgression of the ocean up to the location of the western Henry orebody was an extensive sea-level still stand as evidenced by the unit thickness and stacked transgressive regressive sequences. This period was followed by sporadic regressing seas and still stands, progressing eastward and stranding the sand bodies which make up the East Extended, TE, and East TE Ridge orebodies. The orebodies are underlain by predominantly non-mineralized fluvial sands and occasional back barrier lagoonal deposited clays. There is a predominance of wetlands on the southern extents of the zone as the surface elevations decrease due to a large karst depression.

Introduction The growing role of Colombia as a major supplier of internationally traded steam coal has been widely discussed in the industry. Although Colombian coal has been produced and exported in small quantities for a number of years, the country's position as a major coal exporter began in earnest in 1985 with the first commercial exports from the Cerrejon North Block Project. The mine is located on the Guajira peninsula in northeast Colombia, about 145 km (90 miles) from the coast (Fig. 1). In addition to the mine itself, the project involves construction of a dedicated railroad and port. This forms a modern, efficient, and integrated system. The project is embodied in a 50-50 association contract between International Colombia Resources (Intercor), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Exxon, and Carbocol, the Colombian state coal company. Intercor and Carbocol share investment and operating expenses equally. Intercor has the additional responsibility of managing operations on behalf of the partners. Each partner is entitled to 50% of the coal produced, and each markets its share separately. The project is a multi-seam, truck and shovel operation, based on large reserves (2 to 3 Gt or 2.2 to 3.3 billion st) of high quality bituminous coal. Exports began in the first quarter of 1985, at modest levels through what is called Early Coal Facilities. The permanent coal handling system began operation in February 1986. Production will increase rapidly in each of the next few years, reaching the design capacity of 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy) in 1989. Based on available resources, however, the resource will support expansion, and continued growth in production into the 1990s is feasible. Importance of transportation The success of a new coal export venture, such as Cerrejon, depends heavily on efficient transportation. In the international coal industry, overland and ocean transport can in some cases account for 40% to 50% of the final value of the product. Many coals, such as western US subbituminous coals, cannot reach export markets at all because of their low heat content and great distance from export markets. By the same token, low-grade resources are often commercially attractive for local markets even in the face of competition with much higher quality coals from distant sources.
