For more than a decade the tunneling industry has explored the potential and benefits of macro synthetic fiber (MSF) reinforced concrete solutions for precast tunnel segments. Parallel to industry investigations, academic research is being undertaken to better understand this material when subjected to the typical loads expected during mechanized tunneling. This paper investigates the performance of MSF reinforced precast concrete tunnel segments by means of an experimental program comprising testing of full-scale tunnel segments. The presentation of the satisfactory results of the experimental testing regime will be complemented by a brief case history from a successfully executed project—an America’s First.

In 2004, management at Unimin’s Gleason, TN operation began implementing ergonomic interventions specifically targeted to reduce risk of musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs). Together with corporate and site management, Unimin identified work site hazards and began to modify work practices/equipment. Some interventions were relatively simple and were implemented immediately. Others, like improvements to a mobile shredder, were more complex but were eventually resolved through a participatory approach with employees, management, manufacturers and NIOSH. This paper discusses ergonomic interventions that were successfully implemented using a bottom-up approach to reducing the risk of injury.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA), and the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency (Alameda CMA) are involved in a unique partnership on the planning and design of the fourth bore of the Caldecott Tunnel, located on State Route 24 in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. The project will add a two-lane bore north of the existing three bores. The project will alleviate traffic congestion in the non-peak direction. This paper provides background on the existing facility, summarizes the need for the new fourth bore, describes the proposed improvements, sets forth the approach for project delivery, and lists some of the challenges that are expected during construction.

The dewatering of fine particles is energy intensive and often requires costly capital expenditures. To address these issues, a series of advanced dewatering technologies have been developed at Virginia Tech. These include novel dewatering aids that enhance the performance of existing filtration equipment and an innovative hyperbaric centrifuge that utilizes both air pressure and centrifugal force for dewatering. The moistures obtained using these processes are 30-50% lower than those obtained using conventional methods. Another dewatering technology, known as the hydrophobic displacement process, can reduce product moistures to a level previously attainable only through the use of thermal dryers. This article presents test results obtained with these various advanced dewatering technologies along with estimates of the power consumption for each process.

The Harts Range deposit, owned by Olympia Resources is located some 130 kms northeast of Alice Springs, in central Australia (part of Australia’s Northern Territory). The core economic minerals here are industrial grade garnet and alumino magnesio hornblende (AMH). The resource contains an estimated 2.3 million tonnes of recoverable garnet and 6.2 million tonnes of recoverable AMH, making Harts Range one of the most significant abrasive medium deposits in the world. Part of the general marketing axiom of Olympia Resources is to make high quality products from the garnet and also a special series of blended garnet/AMH products to match the needs for other sectors of industry. The deposit mineralization is of alluvial origin and thus, requires no significant liberation regimes. Over 50% of the head feed is in the form of SiO2/quartz and as much as 17% is –63micron clay slimes and mica. Original pilot scale testwork for flowsheet development centred around fairly conventional wet gravity systems, with spiral concentrators being the pre-eminent separating device. To a point, this type of flowsheet was going to achieve some of the aims albeit fairly predictably. The one area that this circuit would be very limited though is in the recovery of the very coarsest of the medium SG minerals. This was going to be a very important and longer-term costly flaw. Amongst the highest demand, greatest value of products to be produced will be the range of garnet & AMH in the +600 microns sector. A flowsheet dominated by spirals would be fated to forfeit a significant proportion of these coarse minerals to tails. At the Outokumpu Technology P/L test facilities in Perth, testwork was conducted using a pilot scale Floatex® Density Separator, the LPF-230 model. Using a twin stage approach, whereby a primary Floatex® underflow reports directly to a secondary Floatex®, recovery of the economically important +600 micron garnet was increased from 65% in the spirals-only flowsheet to 95% using the Floatex® based flowsheet. Finally, the other significant aspect of this approach is in substantial simplification of the circuit required and a huge reduction in plant footprint. Also, the nature of using hindered settling provides substantial opportunities for process control and automation.

Enclosed cabs have been used on surface mining equipment for many years to protect equipment operators from health and safety hazards. The surface mining and quarrying process is a highly mechanized process that generates large quantities of respirable dust. Due to economic factors, more older mining equipment is being used today than in years past. With this older equipment, it is common to observe deterioration of many components on the enclosed cabs which greatly reduce their protection effectiveness. NIOSH has performed a number of different field studies, as well as a comprehensive laboratory study evaluating various factors and parameters regarding enclosed cabs. NIOSH has recently completed a cooperative research effort with Sy-Klone International and Vulcan Materials Company to evaluate the effectiveness of a newly designed uni-directional filtration and pressurization system that brings all the clean filtered air in at the roof of the cab and extracts all recirculated air near the floor. This design provides the highest air quality to the equipment operator. Testing on this new system showed an almost 10-fold reduction in respirable dust inside the enclosed cab. The uni-directional design is easy to incorporate and should be considered for all new and retrofit systems in surface mining equipment.

John Marks said in his acceptance of the Hartman Award in 2008 ? ?I guess that without the occasional complaint, your mine is probably over-ventilated? (Marks, 2008). Miners are seldom in this situation and often spend much of the time trying to find enough air to keep the operation running. With examination there are some things that can be done to make the best use of ventilation systems. Should there be surplus air, in which some of these options may result - financial and other benefits can be obtained. Some of the issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and non-metal mines. Also, operations are faced with demands from reserves that are deeper, hotter and further away from fans and shafts, not to mention increased production demands. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal non-metal operations but some may be applicable to coal too. OPTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT Some of the areas to be addressed are shop ventilation methods, auxiliary equipment areas, dedicated intakes and returns, optimizing development, examination of mine airway utilization and alternative ventilation methods. UNDERGROUND SHOPS First, examine what is being done with the underground shop air. If it is being coursed directly to the returns there may be some potential to better utilize this, in most cases, relatively contaminant free air. Research the legal options for ventilating mine shops. MSHA regulations in 30CFR 57.4761 (1) allow the following options: To confine or prevent the spread of toxic gases from a fire originating in an underground shop where maintenance work is routinely done on mobile equipment, one of the following measures shall be taken: use of control doors or bulkheads, routing of the mine shop air directly to an exhaust system, reversal of mechanical ventilation, or use of an automatic fire suppression system in conjunction with an alternate escape route. The alternative used shall at all times provide at least the same degree of safety as control doors or bulkheads. Discussion This regulation gives some operators flexibility in ventilating underground shop facilities. If shop air is to be coursed through the work area, and then directly to the mine return, the question should be asked ? is the quality of air good enough to be reused in the mine, and if so, what are the risks? Can the risks be accommodated and managed to accomplish the change? If so, a considerable increase in mine level airflow could be attained by reusing shop air. Clearly, regulations are a minimum standard, and can be exceeded. Metal non-metal mine regulations are not as specific as coal due to the multitude of different mining methods and conditions utilized. Risks must be thoroughly examined and addressed to assure a safe environment. Issues Determine what contaminants are being produced in the work area ? welding fumes, diesel exhaust, paint fumes, chemicals and solvents, etc. Survey the area and determine exposures. MSHA requires exposure monitoring in 30 CFR 57.5002 (1) of dust, gasses mists and fumes to assure air quality is being met. Perform surveys and examine existing data to quantify personal and area concentrations of contaminants. Often there is adequate circulation such that exposure levels in shop work areas are low. After sending shop air back into the system any contaminants would be further lowered by dilution with other mine intake air downstream. Look at the shop work schedule. If only on day shift, the other two shifts and possibly weekends have no activity or source of contamination to affect the ventilation system. The worst case planning scenario would be a shop fire. Study and simulate how this would affect the mine and shop area. MSHA regulations require an escape route and a fire suppression system be installed and maintained as follows in 30 CFR 57.4671 (1): (d) Automatic fire suppression system and escape route. If used as an alternative, the automatic fire suppression system and alternate escape route shall meet the following requirements: (1) The suppression system shall be? (d)(1)(i) Located in the shop area; (d)(1)(ii) The appropriate size and type for the particular fire hazards involved; and (d)(1)(iii) Inspected at weekly intervals and properly maintained. (2) The escape route shall bypass the shop area so that the route will not be affected by a fire in the shop area. Case Study In an underground room and pillar mine, active mine workings were advancing further away from the mine shaft with deteriorated returns and leakage having a negative effect on ventilation airflows to the face. Mine level airflows were 236 m3/s (500,000 cfm) and shop airflows were 24 m3/s (50,000 cfm) (see Figure 1A). No additional capacity was available at the main surface fan. A solution was to utilize the shop air then send it to the mine areas instead of directly to the return. Considerable information on shop air quality and exposures from many years of operation was examined and no negative data was discovered. A risk analysis determined that moving forward with a shop air reuse program was desirable. A plan was developed, analyzed and decision to proceed approved by mine management. The change was simulated on the computer with the USBM/MTU MFire program before being implemented. This included utilizing fire scenarios to examine potential exposures to inby mining sections and plan escape routes. There are two types of ore transportation systems in use at Newmont's Magma Copper Co. San Manuel mine in Arizona-rail-mounted, box-type rotary cars and the newer rail-mounted, bottom-dumping ASEA cars. Though the cost per car for the ASEA units greatly exceeds the cost per rotary car, the advantages of the ASEA units, including much faster dump times, have made the ASEA system a successful alternative at the San Manuel mine. The rotary system of ore transportation has been in use at San Manuel since production began in 1956. The system employs 7.9-m3 box-type cars to transport ore by rail to shaft pocket areas. A rotating dumping mechanism turns three cars at a time upside down to empty them, and returns them to an upright position. Trains of 15 cars each are dumped in about six minutes. Each 15-car train is pulled by an 18-t rated trolley locomotive. There are about 400 rotary cars in service at San Manuel and the system is used for the majority of ore haulage. This well-proven rotary method was instrumental in achieving the December 1977 world record of 272 Mt hoisted from an underground copper mine. Magma Copper Co. began using ASEA cars in late 1977. Designed by ASEA of Sweden, the cars are built for San Manuel by Kasper-Hall Manufacturing Co. in Tucson. The cars basic design feature is a hinged floor that opens at the side as the car is pulled through the dump. As it passes over the dump, a fifth wheel attached to the hinged floor (opposite the hinges) travels along a rail in the dump. This rail dips down into the pocket and then returns to track level. As the fifth wheel travels along the rail, the car floor opens, the car dumps, and the floor is then returned to track level. As the car is dumping, the body remains suspended over the pocket by wheel rollers attached to each side of the dump. Trains of 10 cars each are emptied in about 45-50 seconds. Each ASEA train is pulled by an 18-t rated trolley locomotive, adapted at San Manuel to allow it to pass through the ASEA dump. At minimal cost, "wings" are welded to each side of the locomotive. These wings suspend the locomotive over the pocket as the train passes through the dump. Advantages of the ASEA System Major design characteristics of the ASEA and rotary systems are shown in the accompanying table. The comparison points out some of the following advantages demonstrated by the ASEA system. • Faster dumping-An ASEA train dumps in 50 seconds, while a rotary train takes at least six minutes. There is no stopping or starting when dumping an ASEA train. The train enters the dump area, dumps, and leaves in one continuous motion-in contrast to rotary trains which must stop and start five times to dump. With the rotary system, three cars are spotted in the dump mechanism by remote control. When the cars are in place, the train operator activates the dump, the cars are turned over, and then returned to an upright position. This process is repeated until all 15 cars in the train are emptied.

The mixshield will excavate the 8,534 linear m × 6.7 m ID (28,000 linear ft × 22 ft ID) tunnel for the City of Portland Oregon?s, Bureau of Environmental Services (Owner) East Side CSO Tunnel Project. TBM selection was conducted under a preconstruction contract in which the Contractor, Owner, Construction Management Consultant and Designer collaborated on TBM selection prior to commencement of construction. The creation and maintenance of a healthy working environment in surface mining operations require sustained efforts in pursuing advanced research initiatives toward the development and deployment of powered haulage technologies. This paper contains progress summary on a frontier research in truck dynamic control, vision and collision avoidance. This research is required to provide solutions to challenging problems regarding operator visibility in truck haulage in a surface mining environment. The paper focuses on truck control kinematics and dynamics, truck-haul road interactions, intelligent truck sensing, intelligent truck collision avoidance system, integrated system for situational awareness, augmented visualization and operator interface, and field testing and error variance modeling of developed technologies. A sensor suite of four subsystems, including front-side stereo-camera, front-side Doppler radar, close range sonar proximity sensors, and rear-side camera system have been recommended for developing a 360° truck operator vision to allow safe operations. This research initiative is significant because it will provide a strong basis for developing technologies to improve truck haulage safety in surface mines and construction sites.

Introduction The Energy Metals Corporation (EMC) holds numerous mineral properties in the northern portion of the Great Divide Basin including the JAB Property, one of several potential properties being planned for development as a satellite facility to the greater Antelope Uranium Project. A National Instrument 43-101 Technical Report has been completed for the JAB property. This report estimates total measured and indicated mineral resources on the property totaling 3,555,022 pounds U3O8 contained in 2,400,875 tons at an average grade of 0.073 % U3O8 at a .25 GT cutoff in accordance with CIM Standards on Mineral Resources and Reserves. The JAB Property is located in Sections 13, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, and 23, Township 26 North, Range 94 West, approximately Latitude 42o 14’ North and Longitude 108o 00’ West (Figure 1, Location Map). This property consists of unpatented mining lode claims and Wyoming State mineral leases comprising approximately 2,100 acres.

"The Vietnamese economic growth of more than 5% per year leads this country to an enormous demand for raw materials. In the duration of ongoing expansion, the big challenge in the coming decades will be to make this process as sustainable as possible when it comes to economic, environmental and social objectives. Risk management especially in occupational safety and health (OSH) in enterprises is one of the most important tools to achieve this aim. But until now, this has not been taken into priority by Vietnamese coal mining enterprises. Main reasons for this situation can be found in deficient legislative conditions and in non-synchronized risk management systems. In contrast, Germany has implemented an adequate legal system and the German mining industry has gained lots of experiences in risk management, especially in occupational safety and health. This paper seeks to point out specific challenges how to improve occupational safety and health in Vietnam by transferring and applying German methods and standards."

Due to increased production of fine coal during mining during this century and inefficient fine coal recovery technologies, a vast reserve of high quality coal currently exists in refuse ponds. A novel fine coal circuit consisting of a hindered-bed classifier, an enhanced gravity concentrator and a flotation column has been evaluated for the recovery of fine coal from refuse ponds. The treatment of a pond derived from Pittsburgh No. 8 seam coal resulted in the production of a premium fuel containing less than 5% ash and a calorific value of about 30,173kJ/kg with 60% mass yield. The results from the treatment of two refuse pond materials will be presented in this publication.

Ventiflex is a flexible ventilation duct system with a global market within mine and tunnel ventilation. The system is distributed in a wide range of qualities and dimensions. It is very important that ventilation systems are designed correctly in mines and tunnels. An incorrectly dimensioned system might result in bad air quality and too high costs. The objective of this study has been to assess some important design parameters for ventiflex comprising the friction loss factor for the duct wall itself, as well as the shock loss factors and the leakage factors for the different couplings systems. This has been obtained by carrying out a large scale experimental program on ducts with all the three different couplings: Velcro, zip and steel-ring. Pressure profiles and air flow rates have been measured, and based on these data the different factors have been calculated. The following results have been obtained: A friction factor l = 0,012 (K = 10) for the duct wall, a shock loss factor z = 0,0125 for velcro- and zip couplings, a shock loss factor z = 0,005 for steel-ring couplings, and a leakage factor f* = 0 mm2/m2 for all three coupling types. The latter result proves that no leakage is possible for a correctly installed duct with proper alignment. The results also confirm that ventiflex complies with class S, or better, according to the SIA-norm. However, whether ventiflex should be designed as class S, A or B according to the SIA-norm, depends on the particular application.

Indigenous people are nearly always affected when projects enter their territory. Crop and other asset compensation can help or undermine a project’s progress depending on the approach. When compensation is handled poorly, a technically viable project can get indefinitely entangled by local unrest. Stake holders associated with compensation issues include; the state, the indigenous people, non-governmental organizations, and the developer. Appreciation for the unique perspective of indigenous peoples and the influences affecting them can avert problems and prevent delays. A review of the compensation issues encountered in Ghana during its recent gold boom can assist in avoiding problems associated with handling poor and uneducated people.

Developers of advanced mining projects face the challenge of how to craft a “Request for Proposal for a Feasibility Study” that will result in bids that are comparable and will lead to a successful execution of the study. Mining engineering consulting firms are challenged by “Request for Proposals” that may consist of a limited description of the Scope of Services and other items, which could present difficulties in the subsequent financing and/or development of the project. Changes in international disclosure requirements have also changed the landscape on how resources and reserves are reported by introducing new disclosure requirements and concepts such as qualified persons. This paper lays out a strategy for preparing a Feasibility Study “Request for Proposal” based on the experiences of a mining engineering consulting firm working on a diversity of projects around the world, and in light of the recent changes in international reporting standards for reserves.

The Pogo Mine, near Delta Junction, Alaska is a 2500 TPD gold operation employing processes including grinding, gravity, rougher flotation, leach, CIP, and E/W. An OCS(Optimizing Control System) expert control system has been implemented on rougher flotation in early 2008. The OCS system communicates with the Plant DCS(Distributed Control System) through OPC(OLE for Process Control) communication. The initial strategy was to control the flotation cell froth level set points to achieve target froth velocities. This strategy was enhanced by controlling both level and air flow setpoints. The flotation cell air and level are adjusted to reach cell pulling rates (froth velocities). The pulling rate setpoints for each cell are determined based on downstream capacity (concentrate surge tank level). The effect of pH and upstream disturbances is also taken into account in adjusting the air and level setpoints. Feed forward compensation is employed down the flotation row to minimize disturbances.

The ever increasing energy costs associated with mining at depth has become an important issue that needs to be addressed for future sustainable production. Vale Inco Limited?s Creighton Mine being the deepest has the highest energy cost per ton due to the ventilation system requirements. A review of the ventilation systems was undertaken with respect to current practices and identification of opportunities to the practical application of technology that would facilitate energy savings. Energy conservation initiatives such as time of day controls have been implemented; however there still remained some opportunity for further reduction. Based on previous studies that identified opportunities due to actual time spent in the workplace, our mining method and ventilation design, it was determined that Ventilation on Demand (VOD) could provide further additional energy reductions with respect to our auxiliary fans. A pilot project has recently been initiated to apply a Ventilation on Demand concept to two 112 kW auxiliary fans and their related workings located on the 2340m level of Creighton Mine. The project objective is to determine the practical methodology and application of this technology in the field. This project involves the installation of variable frequency drive (VFD) starters on the auxiliary fans to allow variable volume (through speed control) based on demand. The required flow is determined based on equipment and/or personnel via identification tags. The Fans adjust to the flow requirements as measured by flow sensors. Since the fans are sized for the final requirements the required flows can be achieved regardless of system length. Energy savings are realized by supplying only the volumes (power) as required and only when required. This paper discusses the rational and program being tested at the VALE Inco Limited, Creighton Mine.

The excavation-induced stresses transferred from the panels or pillars in upper coal seams play a key role in the occurrence of rockbursts in driving roadways during close-distance coal seam mining, which has become a common problem and threat to many underground mines. The authors established a 3D finite-difference numerical model via FLAC3D software using the closedistance coal seam mining conditions in the Zofiówka Mine as a case example to reveal the rockburst mechanism in such conditions. The excavation-induced vertical stresses are analyzed, which provides a basis to build a conceptual model to explain the possible source mechanism of the rockburst under such conditions. Nine typical rockburst indicators considering different contributing factors are then selected as the evaluation criteria to assess rockburst potential in the study site. The results suggest that the superposition of multiple excavation-induced stresses of the main drift and tailgate provides an environment for stress concentration and energy accumulation. The side abutment stress induced by mining in the upper coal seam has a “strengthening” effect to the rockburst occurrence. The great deviatoric stress induced by complex excavating situations is another important exterior cause. A strict calibration procedure should be implemented before using indicators to predict rockburst potential. A methodology was proposed to estimate the location and magnitude of rockbursts combined with numerical modeling, laboratory tests, and feedbacks from the field. The study could provide some references and guidelines for preventing and mitigating rockbursts in underground mines under similar engineering conditions.

Cross passageways between adjacent tunnels in passenger rail or transit systems may be used during train fire emergencies to evacuate passengers to points of safety in the non-incident tunnel. Rescue trains can be brought into the non-incident tunnel to remove passengers to expedite evacuation times as compared to walking along bench walls to the nearest egress stairs. In cases of multiple train emergencies, the required ventilation capacities can result in high pressure differences between the incident and non-incident tunnels. These pressure differences can make it difficult or impossible for a normal person to open doors of a cross passageway between adjacent tunnels. If opened, the velocity of the airflow through an open cross passageway can reach levels high enough to impede passenger evacuation. This paper describes the analysis of this problem for a sample rail tunnel. A ventilation concept that mitigates the problems of high cross passageway door opening forces and high velocities through open cross passageways is presented.
