The metropolitan area of the Witwatersrand has grown up around the Witwatersrand gold mines. Most of the mines have now been abandoned, but deposits of waste material remain and have been surrounded, and in some instances covered, by urban and industrial sprawl. This paper describes the development of geotechnical measures for the abatement of air and water pollution from abandoned gold-residue dams in the Witwatersrand area. The measures include the stabilization of the surfaces of the dams to prevent wind and water erosion, the terracing of slopes to minimize erosion, and the construction of catchment walls and dams. The measures were developed in terms of the set of guidelines for environmental protection adopted by the Chamber of Mines of South Africa in 1979.

ABSTRACT We report the results of a model-testing program to evaluate the strength characteristics of non-persistent joints. We describe the conditions under which new tensile cracks generate and propagate to connect existing joints so that the rock mass becomes fractured into several blocks, leading to a low strength. The strength of some models was equal to that along a single joint through the full sample length. In models with two joint sets, failure took place along a composite plane, partly sliding along a discontinuous joint and shearing through the intervening intact block of rock, or else by rotation and sliding of the blocks. This last failure mode could also lead to very low model strength. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Dieser Bericht beschreibt die Ergebnisse von Versuchen mit Modellfelsmassen um den Einfluâ von unterbrochenen Rissen in ihrer Widerstandsfähigkeit zu untersuchen. Es werden die Umstände beschrieben unter denen neue Zugrisse entstehen, sich verbreiten, sich mit bestehenden Rissen verbinden und die Felsmasse in mehrere Felsblöcke zerlegen und zu einer kleinen Widerstandsfestigkeit führen. Der Widerstand einiger Versuchskörper entsprach der Festigkeit eines Risses der die ganze Länge des Versuchskörpers überquert.Versuchkörper mit zwei Rißfamilien versagten unter einer zusammegesetzten Ebene, zum Teil mit Verschiebungen nach unterbrochenen Rißebenen die sich durch Schnittversagen intakter Felsblöcke verbinden, und zum Teil durch Drehungen und Verschiebungen einzelner Felsblöcke. Die letzte Versagunsart kann zu einer stark verminderten Widerstansfähigkeit führen. RÉSUMÉ Nous présentons les résultats de quelques essais fait sur des modèles évaluant les caractéristiques de résistance des fractures discontinues. Nous décrivons les conditions sous lesquelles des nouvelles fissures de traction peuvent s’engendrer et se propager pour faire la connection avec des fractures existantes, de façon que le rocher se fracture en plusieurs blocs, menant à une résistance réduite. La résistance de quelques modèles fut égale a celle d’une fracture traversant toute la longueur du modèle. Pour les modèles ayant deux ensembles de fractures, la rupture a eu lieu sur une surface mixte, causée d’une part, par le glissement sur une fracture discontinue et d’autre part, par la rupture à travers le pont de matériel intact; ou bien par rotation et glissement des blocs. Cette dernière façon de rupture peut aussi aboutir à une très faible résistance des modèles.

Keywords: Submerged-arc furnace, plasma furnace, d.c. furnace, scale up, Søderberg electrodes, smart grid, demand side management, load shedding This paper argues that the scale up of furnaces and the supply of electricity are going to be two major issues that will affect the ferro-alloy industry in the near future, and that economic factors will drive this development. The most common type of furnace for producing ferro-alloys at present is the submerged-arc furnace with three electrodes, fed from a three-phase a.c. electrical supply. The scale up of this technology has now reached a fundamental constraint, which is caused by the electrical reactance of the secondary circuit. If the economy of any further scale up is to be achieved in the future then a different technology will have to be used. The supply of electrical power in future is likely to become a more complex issue than it is at present. Existing submerged-arc furnaces tend to run at fairly steady loads, but the ability to swing the load under demand-side management may offer advantages, and may allow a furnace to get cheaper power from the organisations that supply this power. This will have to be counterbalanced against the nuisance factors incurred by having a varying load in the operation of the furnace. Various options are therefore discussed in this paper. The possibility of scale up of Søderberg electrodes is discussed, as well as the use of d.c. power and multiple electrodes. Some of the issues with load swinging are also examined. A particular scenario is also briefly presented to show that considerable further scale up of ferro-alloy furnaces is still possible.

Keywords: Furnace, decommissioning, care and maintenance, re-start, funding, nickel Bindura Nickel Corporation (BNC) operates two nickel mines, and treats concentrates from these mines as well as toll concentrates from the region around its Bindura Smelter and Refinery (BSR) complex. At the smelter, concentrates of at least 5% nickel content are blended and dried to 4% moisture in a coal-fired rotary kiln. Matte smelting of concentrate is carried out in a six-in-line electric arc furnace, where the furnace slag is granulated and discarded. Furnace matte is transferred via ladles into Peirce-Smith converters, where, after granulation, a leach alloy containing 68%Ni, 20%Cu, and 6%S is produced. Converter slag is recycled via the matte-smelting furnace. The onset of the global economic recession towards the end of 2008 resulted in a collapse of metal prices, worsening the local situation that was already marred by unfavourable macro-economic conditions in Zimbabwe. As a result, BNC mines were put on care and maintenance in November 2008, followed by Bindura Smelter and Refinery in February and March 2009 respectively. The business environment has since changed, and BNC is getting ready to re-start the plant. This paper describes the decommissioning of the Bindura furnace, asset preservation during the care and maintenance programme in the past two years, and preparation for starting up of the Bindura smelter in the near future.

Chemical states of fluorine in CaO-SiO2-CaF2glasses in a composition range of CaO/SiO2=0.5?1.3 and 5?25 mol%CaF2have been investigated by 19F solid-state NMR with and without MAS. The isotropic chemical shifts of the glasses are close to those of cuspidine crystal (59.4 and64.3 ppm with respect to C6F6) and CaF2crystal (58.6 ppm). The fluoride ions are coordinated with four or less than four calcium ions in this composition range. The chemical shifts move to the lower frequency with an increase in the CaF2content, whereas those are not affected by theCaO/SiO2ratio. The ionic distance between calcium and fluoride ions increases with an increase in the CaF2content. The chemical state of fluorine is not disturbed by the degree of polymerization of the silicate network. Comparing the MAS and static NMR spectra, the second moment attributed to 19F-19F dipole-dipole interaction has been estimated. The values of the glasses range over 3.1?7.3107Hz2andthose are larger than the calculated value of cuspidine crystal. This indicates that fluoride ions form Ca-F clusters in the glasses and that the size of clusters increases with increasing the CaF2content. Discussed in the paper is the redesigned reserve/resource classification for solid minerals being put forth by the authors to replace the acting Russian classification of 19961. The new version is based on the traditional foundations of former Russian classifications and the principles of the ‘McKelvey box’, both categorizing mineral resources according to the degree of geological assurance and economic viability. Based on these approaches the classification deliberately deals with both reserve and resource categories very similar to those established by the Geneva Accords in terms of definitions implied. The authors proceed from the UN-ECE proposed concept of ‘reserves’ being a part of ‘total resources’ explored in great detail by geological and feasibility studies and economically mineable at the time of reporting. The draft classification distinguishes ‘proved’, ‘probable’ and ‘possible’ categories of reserves depending on the stage of feasibility assessment carried out, i.e. the degree of detail and accuracy with which modifying factors affecting mineability of an orebody are taken into account. The reserves are regarded as a product of feasibility assessment of ‘measured’, ‘indicated’ and ‘inferred’ resources. The portions of them not having been classified as ‘reserves’ are regarded as composed of two classes: ‘subeconomic’ and ‘potentially economic’ resources (or ‘resource base’). All the cells of the classification matrix are provided with traditional for Russia alphanumeric designations and appropriate UNFC codes. The classification scheme recommended is viewed as a step forward in improvement of the State inventory and reporting mineral resources in market conditions, conducive to cross-border professional collaboration in the field of providing reliable information on the mineral rawmaterials base of the world’s economy. Besides, it recommends an easy way to get rid of amethodological error in the UNFC classification scheme where consecutive stages of geologicalexploration are identified with a single inherent degree of geological assurance. Worldwide, the major Manganese ores can be separated into three different types: ?Oxidized ores (MnO2): in Australia, Gabon, Brazil,?. ?Semi-oxidized ores (Mn2O3): in South-Africa, Australia,?. ?Carbonated ore (MnCO3): in Ghana, South Africa, Kazhakstan?. The other Manganese ores are less rich but can be used locally or in the neighbour countries (China, Ukraina, India?). Since the beginning of the 20th Century, Manganese has played a big role in the steel industry process average usage ratio: 9,5 kg/mt of steel). The recent grow-up of this industry has led to an increase of Manganese ores demand. In parallel, several companies have increased their Manganese ore producing capacity. In this presentation, we explain the link between the main Manganese ores characteristics and the key different factors for an effective and low cost Mn alloys production (HCFeMn and SiMn): ?Chemistry ?Size ?Reactivity Then we will point out the advantages of Comilog ore and Sintec ® usages in various Manganese alloy metallurgical process compared with the other main ores and with the local ores. Some advised formulations for the different kinds of furnaces and alloys will be also discussed.

The smelter objective is to process wet concentrate to produce crushed, slow-cooled, sulphur-deficient nickel-copper matte rich in platinum group metals (PGMs), gold, and base metals for despatch to the Magnetic Concentration Plant at the Base Metals Refinery. Throughout its history, the smelter complex has been continuously upgraded in line with increasing production demand, changing feeds, environmental initiatives, and advances in available technology. The smelter receives filter cake and slurry from Anglo Platinum concentrators and joint ventures. Wet concentrate is fed through a flash drying process utilising coal-fired, fluidised bed hot-gas generators, to produce dry feed material for the electric furnaces and slag-cleaning furnace. For primary smelting, two electric furnaces are used, each with a rated capacity of 34MW. Furnace matte, containing the bulk of the base metal sulphides and PGMs, is tapped periodically into refractory-lined ladles and granulated using high-pressure water jets, then dried through electrically powered pneumo-driers to become the main feed to the Anglo platinum Converting Process (ACP). Slag is tapped semi-continuously, granulated, and treated through the slag mill. The ACP treats the combined matte output of Waterval, Polokwane, and Mortimer smelters. It is a top-blown furnace, with furnace matte, air, and oxygen being injected into the converter via a lance submerged in the slag. Converter matte is tapped and bottom cast into moulds, slow-cooled, crushed, and despatched to the refineries. Slag is granulated and dried for recycling to the slag-cleaning furnace. ACP slag is fed to the slag-cleaning furnace along with a reductant and a sulphur source. Slag-cleaning-furnace matte is granulated for processing by the ACP, while slag is granulated and processed in the slag mill. The slag mill and flotation circuit treats granulated slag from the electric furnaces and slag-cleaning furnace to recover entrained matte containing valuable PGMs and base metal sulphides.

The ferrite-pearlite microstructure is the most popular microstructure for alloys used in structural applications, including railway wagon wheels. These alloys have been designed through alloying and thermo-mechanical processing to have a refined microstructure. Ferrite-pearlite alloys are low cost, weldable, have good fabricability, and are reliable under extreme conditions. Given these performance attributes, it seems unlikely then that their dominant position as structural steels would ever be challenged by alternative microstructures. One major achievement in the development of ferrite-pearlite steels has been in the refinement of their interlamellar spacing to very fine distances of the order of < 0.3 um. A refined microstructure increases the hardness of the alloy, thus increasing its life under wear conditions. The interlamellar spacing in pearlitic steels has, however, been refined almost to its theoretical limit. The increasing demand for speed and increased axle loading on railway wagons requires the use of stronger, tougher, and more durable materials. This has opened the window for the development of novel bainitic steels. Bainitic alloys have a higher level of microstructural refinement than pearlitic ones. They have shown to have good wear resistance and rolling-contact fatigue resistance, and high toughness. This paper will discuss the progress to date on the development of bainitic railway wheel alloys. Four alloy chemistries have been chosen for possible further development.

"The predominant current processes for the treatment of oxidized copper–cobalt ores use a reductive acid leach to bring the desired metals into solution. However, the indiscriminate nature of acid leaching results in a solution, akin to a metal soup, containing not only the Cu and Co but also an extensive suite of other metals. These other metals, notably Fe, Mn, Al, Ca, Mg and Si, all have to be eliminated from solution before the copper and cobalt can be recovered. Generally precipitation processes are used, but these tend to result in significant losses of copper and/or more usually cobalt from solution, leading to reduced recoveries. The AmmLeach® process uses ammonia-based chemistry to selectively leach the target metals, leaving the rest behind in the leach residue. This approach eliminates any need to clean the solution of unwanted metals and the consequent metal losses. After solid–liquid separation, the leach solution is immediately subjected to separation and concentration of the copper and cobalt using solvent extraction and electrowinning. INTRODUCTION The Copper Belt extends through the northern part of Zambia and the southern province of Katanga in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and contains the richest and highest grade deposits of copper and cobalt remaining in the world. Whilst there are a number of mines that produce sulphide concentrates, using froth flotation, the largest deposits are those where near-surface sulphides have been weathered over time to form oxides. The oxides cannot be concentrated by conventional physical means to give high recoveries. Despite this, a number of dense medium separation plants have been installed and used to produce a higher grade concentrate which is typically exported (while the rejects, typically 2 to 3% Cu are stockpiled for treatment at a later date). These plants generally have low recoveries and can only be used on the dwindling supply of high grade materials. In exporting the concentrate, little value adding is undertaken within the country, thus greatly reducing the economic benefits to the country. Recent changes to the regulations in the DRC will effectively ban the export of low value ores, concentrates and intermediates in favour of high value metals. This will necessitate mines to install new processing circuits in order to comply with these regulations. The head grade of ores currently being treated in the DRC is slowly decreasing as the extremely high grade materials are being selectively mined out. In many cases, the removal of a small volume of high grade materials leaves a much larger volume of economically marginal ore behind. This is due to a desire for short-term profits overtaking long-term prosperity. The remaining ore, which in many cases is still of relatively high value by world class standards, is likely to be only treatable by low cost heap leaching. There are some initial trials of heap leaching within the DRC, but implementation at a large scale has yet to be adopted."

The increased tendency to use hydrometallurgy as an extraction step towards final refining following a pyrometallurgical smelting process requires melts which have to be cast and or comminuted which can then be taken up into solution or leached. To generate surface area for optimal leaching, a common process is to granulate and in many cases mill, which is a general practice with friable material with properties associated with higher sulphur, carbon and silicon levels. However, in the case of metallic melts milling can be unfeasible due to the ductility of the granulated particles. Water solidification is capable of producing either fine particles by means of granulation or atomisation. Atomisation however, can produce particles as fine as 40 microns without a milling circuit.

Silver tarnishes readily in common atmospheres and is accelerated in humid atmospheres. Tarnish is the formation of silver sulphide on the surface of silver when it is exposed to a wide range of sulphur-containing atmospheres. Tarnish is unattractive and highly undesirable, and can be removed either with a silver polish or a chemical dip. Dips are generally only recommended when heavy black tarnish cannot be removed with a polish, and care must be taken during cleaning because these can contain aggressive chemicals and give off hazardous and unpleasant smelling fumes. Polishes work best for large areas of plain undecorated silver, and form part of a regular cleaning programme. Some polishes contain chemicals that inhibit tarnishing, but these generally only have a short life. Several methods have been developed to reduce tarnish formation on Silver; these include alloying, surface treatment, and coatings. The authors evaluated a range of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) surface treatments and coatings in earlier research. Four treatments/coatings increased the time to noticeable tarnish by more than ten fold, and the results were reported at the International Corrosion Congress (ICC) in 2005, and at the Mint Directors Conference (MDC) in 2006. SAM treatment using 95% 1-hexadecanethiol (C16H34S) was found to give good anti-tarnish performance and showed potential for the commercial treatment of Sterling silver. Therefore research was performed to optimise the methods of application of this type of coating to provide an easier, faster, and more-user friendly technique to provide an anti-tarnish treatment. Hercules? is a low nickel austenitic stainless steel developed at Mintek that has a typical composition of 9 wt% Mn, 0.05 wt% C, 2wt% Ni, 0.25 wt% N and 16.5 wt% Cr. A more corrosion resistant version of Hercules? (Hercules? B) with 0.5 wt% Mo has also been developed. Potentiodynamic tests performed on Hercules? B in a 5wt% sulphuric acid solution showed it to have improved corrosion resistance comparable to that of AISI 304. The effect of a varying Mn content on the corrosion resistance of Hercules? B has also been investigated and the results discussed in this paper. From the corrosion test results, it is clear that decreasing the Mn content of Hercules? B increased the corrosion rate, while increasing it decreased the corrosion rate. Abstract The process of stress-induced fracturing around underground excavations in brittle rock is associated with dilation or volume increase of the failed, fractured rock. Different attempts to account analytically for this dilation have been made within the framework of plasticity theory. This theory has been developed mostly for metals, strain-hardening materials or soils, but brittle failure of rock-like materials is characterized by strain-softening behaviour and the volume change is dominated by geometric factors, which may violate stability principles of plasticity. In this work a semi-empirical Rock Mass Bulking Model (RMBM) was developed, using as starting concepts: dilation angle, plastic strain rates, effective deformation modulus, effective Poisson&apos;s ratio, Griffith locus, and the definition of a bulking factor BF introduced by Kaiser et al. (1996). The model was calibrated in order to obtain bulking factors that are consistent with experimental data and case studies of measured bulking around underground excavations. Résumé La fracturation provoquée par le stress autour des excavations souterraines dans le minéral friable est associée à la dilatation ou à l’augmentation du volume de la roche en rupture. Dans le cadre de la théorie de la plasticité, différents essais ont été faits dans le but de trouver une justification analytique pour cette dilatation. Cette théorie a d’abord été élaborée pour les métaux, les matériaux ou les sols d’écrouissage, mais la rupture fragile de matériaux d’aspect rocheux est caractérisée par un comportement d’amollissement et le changement de volume est dominé par des facteurs géométriques, ce qui pourrait ne pas être conforme aux principes de stabilité de la plasticité. Dans le présent ouvrage, un Modèle semi-empirique de masse rocheuse a été élaboré, dont les concepts initiaux sont les suivants : angle de dilatation, vitesse de fluage plastique, module effectif de déformation, coefficient effectif de Poisson, locus de Griffith, et la définition d’un facteur de foisonnement FF apportée par Kaiser et al. (1996). Le modèle a été calibré afin d’obtenir des facteurs de foisonnement qui soient conformes aux données expérimentales et aux études de cas sur le foisonnement mesuré autour des excavations souterraines. Kurzfassung Der Prozess von Brüchen in unterirdischen Abgrabungen in sprödem Gestein ist mit der Ausweitung oder der Volumenzunahme des gebrochenen Gesteins verbunden. Verschiedene Versuche im Rahmen der Verformbarkeitstheorie haben versucht, diese Ausweitung analytisch festzustellen. Die Verformbarkeitstheorie wurde hauptsächlich für Metalle, kalthärtende Werkstoffe oder Böden entwickelt, da sprödes Versagen von Gestein ähnlichen Werkstoffen von kaltenhärtendem Materialverhalten gekennzeichtnet ist, und die Volumenveränderung von geometrischen Faktoren beherrscht wird, die die Stabilitätsprinzipien der Plastizität übertreten. In dieser Arbeit wurde ein halbempirisches Rock Mass Bulking Model (RMBM) (Modell für das Aufgehen der Gesteinsmasse), entwickelt, für das die folgenden Anfangsprinzipien benutzt wurden: Ausweitungswinkel, plastische Fliessensätze, wirksames Verformungsmodul, leistungsfähiges Poissons Verhältnis, die Griffith Ortskurve und die Bestimmung eines Aufgehensfaktor BF1 der von Kaiser et al. (1996) eingefürt wurde. Das Modell wurde so kalibriert, dass es die Aufgehenfaktoren erzielte, die mit den Vesuchsangaben und den Fallstudien von Aufgehensmessungen in unterirdischen Abgrabungen übereinstimmen.

With the end of the official apartheid legislation in the early 1990s, South Africa was heralded as a non-racial country. However, racial awareness has been reintroduced into the country with the Affirmative Action and Black Economic Empowerment legislation. Gender and racial transformation are the current order of the day. All organizations are required to reflect in their make-up the demographics of the population as soon as possible. Scorecard shave been drawn up to measure the rate of transformation for gender and race in organizations. The mining industry in South Africa has been in the forefront of this transformation legislation and scorecards. This paper seeks to show the effect of gender and racial transformation on mining engineering education and professionalism by analysing the changing demographics of graduating mining students at both the South African universities offering a degree in mining engineering, the professional registration of mining engineers with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), and the membership of the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), the vocational institute for mining engineers. It also demonstrates the absurdity of gender and racial quotas based solely on the demographics of the current population of the country. This paper shows the degree to which mining engineering has transformed in both gender and race.

A paper was presented by Bateman Minerals and Metals at INFACONX (2004) describing a simplified Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Model for predicting the temperature and velocity distributions in all the fluid zones of a single electrode DC Furnace simultaneously with the temperature distributions in the refractory lining of the vessel. The boundary conditions imposed on the model consisted of the arc current, external surface film coefficients and ambient temperatures. The temperature and velocity distributions in the free-board, slag and metal were solved simultaneously by coupling across the interfaces between the fluids and transportation phenomena developing in the plasma arc. A simplified model was used to describe the ex-change of energy by radiation between the arc and surfaces enclosing the freeboard region. The strengths of this model were reported as being the ability to: ?Solve the different zones and transportation phenomena simultaneously without the need to transfer partial numerical results between different numerical analysis applications. ?Solve velocity and temperature distributions without assumptions regarding internal film coefficients and additional internal temperature boundary conditions. One of the disadvantages of the model was that the energy absorbed by the process was not modelled, resulting in vessel performance predictions under heat loss conditions only. Whilst this allowed potential problem areas such as localized refractory heating to be identified, the model was only capable of predicting how these could be improved by varying the overall geometry and materials of construction. This paper presents improvements in the application software and user defined subroutines of the model as follows: ?Incorporation of surface to gas, gas to gas and gas to surface radiation models to improve the accuracy of radiative heat transfer mechanisms within the freeboard. ?Incorporation of a process energy absorption model based on a theoretical temperature dependant enthalpy curve which incorporates melting, smelting and superheating in selected areas of the bath. This enables the effect of feed distribution and power to feed ratio changes to be estimated. The effects of a commercial arc at full power on the freeboard and slag can now be simulated with increased accuracy.

The target of the current metallurgical industry is to recycle and utilize all their by-products, so as to close the sustainable production loop. Slags are the important wastes and by-products of metallurgical industry, which have been treated, recycled and used worldwide. The present paper summarizes the current status of utilization of the various slags from ferrous and non-ferrous metal production, as well as waste incineration, and recycling of salt fluxes in secondary metal production. In addition, the environmental issues of the metallurgical slags are addressed. The metallurgical oxide slags have stone-like properties and, thus, their major applications are in civil engineering field. The slags should be recycled, modified and processed in a proper way, by taking the environmental impact into consideration. With the treatment of salt slags for melting aluminium scraps, as an example, the recycling and elution properties of the salt slags are discussed. Our research indicates that the viscosity of the salt flux is increased with addition of non-metallic components, that a certain percentage of fines remain in suspension, which determines the viscosity, affecting the settling of heavier materials. High slag viscosity will lead to more fine aluminium metal entrapped in the salt slag (may also be seen as a high temperature slurry), and thus increase the load of salt slag recycling. In-pit crusher location selection has had an important role recently, since increasing diesel prices. One way of reducing the haulage costs is to shorten the truck haulage distance by bringing the truck dump point into the pit. This study covers the work done on the optimum crusher location definition for a company that produces aggregate near Izmir, a city of Turkey located in the west. This paper will discuss the effects of pit geometry and mine access requirements on optimum crusher location selection that are mainly based on the establishment of minimum haulage distance. The method will be introduced first and then the computer algorithm developed for this study will be discussed later in the paper. Copper and cobalt are generally electro-won from their aqueous sulphate solutions. After optimised leaching of their ores, concentrates or calcine bearing minerals, the leachate is clarified and suitably purified prior to the electrolytic extraction of the metal of pursuit (Pearcy, 2006). Solvent extraction (SX) using appropriate organic solvents and ion exchange (IX) with relevant resins are known purification processes used for copper and cobalt recovery (Stanely, 1970).As zeolites in general and natural zeolites in particular, demonstrate ion exchange properties (Korkuna et al., 2005), an attempt has been made to use Southern African natural clinoptilolite in the recovery of copper and cobalt from their aqueous sulphate solutions. Initially, synthetic Co and Cu solutions were prepared. Preceded by laboratory ore leachate, plant solutions are to be used. AAS, XRF, XRD, Mossbauer spectroscopy and BET were characterization techniques used. Natural clinoptilolite was used as-received as well as acid activated; and cobalt and copper extractions were performed at room temperature.
