The feedwell performance in gravity thickeners and clarifiers relies on the efficient mixing between solid particles and flocculant to achieve effective flocculation, as well as energy dissipation of the incoming feed stream. A population balance-computational fluid dynamics (PB-CFD) model has been developed and validated to provide new insights into the operation and performance of industrial feedwells. In particular, the PB-CFD model enables the efficacy of the main functions of a feedwell to be investigated for a wide range of feedwell designs and process conditions. This paper describes how PB-CFD was used in the design and development of a new feedwell concept for the flocculation of particles in a solid-liquid stream. The patented feedwell design includes an upwardly converging flow diverter to create two separate compartments for energy dissipation and flocculation. PB-CFD simulations of this simple and easy-to-retrofit feedwell design illustrate a superior performance in terms of flocculation and energy dissipation compared to typical feedwells over a wide range of flow conditions. The potential benefits include reduced flocculant consumption, better de-aeration, greater stability and the ability to cope with a wider variation in volumetric throughput, better flocculation and fines capture, and a more symmetrical discharge that may also offer improved overflow clarity in some applications. The new feedwell design has been installed in a full-scale thickener at an Anglo American Platinum site in South Africa. A number of operational factors complicate this application, but indications are that the new feedwell has led to improvements in stability and underflow properties.

The rock brittleness is one of the most important rock properties that affect the drill-ability of rocks. It is supposed that the increase in rock brittleness causes the increase in penetration rate. The drill-ability of rocks depends on many factors. These factors can be separated as two parts depending on a machine, bit type, rotational speed, thrust, blow frequency, flushing, and rock properties, brittleness, compressive strength, structure, hardness, etc. In this paper, the relationship between brittleness and drill-ability index, which is used in the prediction analysis of the penetration rate of rotary blast hole drills, were examined using regression analysis. It is also seen that significant correlations exist between brittleness and the drill-ability index.

Solving ventilation networks of natural splitting is a basic problem in mine ventilation. Several mathematical techniques are used to solve this problem. This paper proposes a new method which combines the advantages of both classical Hardy Cross method and unconstrained optimization techniques. The trials carried out on model networks have shown that the method offers some facilities in the analysis of mine ventilation networks. The hydrodynamics of a hydrocyclone present a complex internal flow structure, the numerical simulation of which remains a non-trivial task. We report on three-dimensional water-only computational fluid dynamics (CFD) hydrocyclone flow field predictions and highlight some of the issues concerned with the development of a CFD model incorporating an air core. The potential for the application of CFD as a hydrocyclone design tool is also discussed. Physically realistic velocity profile predictions were obtained, which challenge the classical account of the hydrocyclone radial particle classification mechanism. Bateman Engineering has a technology marketing agreement with NORAM Engineering Ltd of Canada to provide state-of-the-art, well-proven acid plant technology, and also has access to roaster technology from several sources, including Chinese technology. Utilising the Noram technology agreement, Bateman was awarded the Engineering and Procurement (EP) contract for the Ambatovy Nickel Project, Sulphuric Acid Facilities in 2007. This is the first Greenfield sulphuric acid plant Bateman has designed for many years, producing a combined 5,500tpd, and is one of the largest sulphur burning acid plants in the world. This paper gives an overview of the sulphuric acid plant for the Ambatovy Nickel Project, advantages of Noram?s unique technology on offer, an overview of work conducted on a recent study of an pyrite roasting acid plants as well as a new technology currently being developed by Bateman for the direct combustion of solid sulphur to form sulphur dioxide.

"A mineral resource royalty is payment to the holder of mineral rights for the utilization of the mineral resource. In South Africa, this payment is made to the State as holder of the mineral rights (The Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Act of 2008). The principle purpose of this research paper is to identify if the State is benefitting from the mineral resource royalty by considering its impact on seven individual Witwatersrand gold mines.For this study, a simple financial optimiser model was created in Microsoft Excel that links the ore flow, block listing and the cash flow (excluding or including the cost of the mineral resource royalty). Mixed integer linear programing (the Excel Solver function) is utilised to optimise either profit or NPV (at 9% and 12%) by adjusting the cut-off grade.The impact on each of the seven mines mine was different but overall R7.9 billion is estimated to be paid in mineral resource royalty over their expected remaining lives. Due to the cost of the mineral resource royalty and increasing the cut-off grades, the total revenue decreases by R10 billion. A significant portion of this lost revenue would have been paid to the State in the forms of other taxation including company income tax which decreases by R2.8 billion. It is recommended that an industry wide investigation be conducted to determine if the resource royalty is adding to the State’s revenue, or destroying value including premature job losses. IntroductionTaxation of mining companies has become a very topical subject in the context of the postapartheid South African economy. There have been increasing calls for equitable re-distribution of mineral asset wealth for the benefit of all South African citizens and not just to an elite few. As part of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MRDPA) of 2002, the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Royalty Act of 2008 was introduced and came into effect in 2010 (South African Revenue Services, 2008). A mineral royalty is payment to the holder of mineral rights for the utilization of the mineral resource. In the case where the holder of the mineral right is the State, then this payment is made to the State (Cawood, 1999). Studies on the potential impact of the mineral resource royalty on the minerals industry have been conducted during the formulation of the Act and subesquently. These include Cawood and Macfarlane (2003), who suggested a cap of no more than 3% (Cawood and Macfarlane, 2003), as well as Cawood (2011), who predicted rising cut-off grades and thus reducing mineral reserves. In 2013, Grobler completed a Masters in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the University of Pretoria and concluded that the impact of the mineral resource royalty on the economy is positive. She stated that the royalty has caused operating expenses to increase, but this does not appear to be significant. Furthermore, she stated that the royalty has not affected the way the mining industry operates (Grobler, 2014)."

This paper provides an overview of possible approaches for structuring the ventilation systems for mines that will become operational within the next decade. Features addressed in the paper include: aspects of airway design and layout in the absence of centralized vertical return shafts, the impact of using diesel-powered trackless equipment in conjunction with conveyor belts in the development and production phases of the project, and the need to balance increasing electrical power costs against the requirement for reduced capital expenditure. The paper provides brief descriptions of the strategies employed in real-life situations and presents an overview of various operational parameters affecting the design of ventilation systems that will be used as ?platforms? for much deeper mines in the future.

This paper reviews how uncertainty has been dealt with over the past 40 years using the decision making cycle as a frame of reference. The review of the phases of this cycle, as applied to rockmechanics and rock engineering, namely characterization, performance analysis, updating and decision making shows that in each, progress has been made over the past 40 years, although most of the basic concepts existed already in the 1960’s. Characterization is the area in which the greatest scientific steps were taken, this phase and performance analysis also gained from the tremendously expanded computational capabilities which allow one to use both more complex and more practically oriented models. The greatest practical advance is without using any doubt in risk based decision making although its acceptance shows interesting differences between different professions. Dans l’article suivant on utilise le cycle de décision pour illustrer le développement du traitement des incertitudes en mécanique des roches et en construction en roche dans les quarante années passées. La revue des phases du cycle de décision montre qu’on a fait du progrès dans chaque phase du cycle de décision, c’est à dire dans la caractérisation, dans l’analyse et la prédiction du comportement, dans l’actualisation et dans l’acte de décision, même si les concepts fondamentaux existaient déjà dans les années 1960. Les plus grands avancements scientifiques se trouvent dans le domaine de la caractérisation tandis que l’analyse prédictive profitait du développement de l’informatique qui a mené à des modèles plus complexes mais aussi plus pratiques. Le plus grand progrès est sans doute dans le domaine de l’acte de décision sur la base des risques. Ce procédé est devenu assez commun même s’il y a encore des différences d’acceptation entre différentes professions. Im vorliegenden Artikel wird der Entscheidungszyklus gebraucht, um darzustellen wie sich derUmgang mit Unsicherheiten im Felsbau während der letzen 40 Jahre entwickelt hat. DerÜberblick über die Phasen des Entscheidungsprozesses zeigt, dass bei der Anwendung in derFelsmechanik und im Felsbau, in allen Phasen d.h. bei der Charakterisierung, bei der analytischenVorhersage, beim Aktualisieren und bei der Entscheidungsfindung Fortschritte gemacht wurden,obwohl die grundlegenden Konzepte bereits in den 1960er Jahren existierten. Im Gebiet derCharakterisierung gab es wohl die grössten wissenschaftlichen Entwicklungen, während dieanalytische Vorhersage vor allem von den Fortschritten der Informatik profitierte, welchekomplexere wie auch praktischere Modelle möglich machte. Mechanization in low-stope panels situated in hard rock infers roof support by tensile bolting to allow free passage of trackless mining equipment in the production areas. This is in sharp contrast to conventional mining, where compressive roof supports?such as timber and grout packs?have traditionally been used, up to 1.5 metres from the production face. Bolting is a hazardous operation because material is dislodged from the roof during the drilling activity. Even with temporary roof support installed, small pieces of rock are dislodged by the percussive action of the drifter. Operations with the man situated directly under the drill, during the drilling activity, are hazardous. The only way to remove the hazard is to move the man away from the machine for as much as possible throughout the complete cycle Costs associated with safety cannot be quantified, but need to form part of the decision-making process. Machine selections based on purchase and running costs alone do not justify the investment cost of mechanized bolters. The equipment selection process needs to take into account the total cost of mining as well as the human safety impact and loss of production costs from having to re-bolt roofs in a production panel to prevent falls of ground. Labour costs in mechanized low-stope bolting are between one-quarter and half the labour costs of non-mechanized bolting. This paper reviews the mechanized bolting option versus handheld bolting from a mining process and cost perspective in a hard rock, low-stope room-and-pillar mining operation in the platinum and chrome industries.

The characterization of platinum group minerals (PGMs) from concentrator flotation circuits provides valuable information towards understanding PGM recovery under given milling and flotation conditions. Additional mineralogical characterization also provides information on ore variability, which may affect recovery. Considering the low grades involved, automated scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterization of PGMs has enabled relatively quick analyses, compared with older, time consuming and less accurate optical microscopy methods. Over the years, parameters, such as species, size distribution, liberation, gangue and base metal sulfide (BMS) associations, have been used to characterize the PGMs in a process mineralogical context, to aid metallurgical interpretation. This paper considers whether flotation indices determined for PGMs can be empirically validated, using initial results from analysis of PGMs in a concentrate bank from a South African concentrator treating UG2 ore from the western limb of the Bushveld Complex. The aim is to determine whether floatability is adequately described by these parameters, or whether other mineralogical factors must be considered when assessing PGM floatability, and hence accounting for recovery vs. losses to tails. The data obtained to date, show that flotation parameters (including liberation index, BMS/gangue relationships and size distribution) have merits where large changes in PGM concentration occur, as observed in the first four cells of the concentrate bank. Larger data sets, however, are required to assess floatability, particularly where concentrate cell grades are similar, as observed in the last six cells of the concentrate bank. Furthermore, the floatability indices could be enhanced by the incorporation of selected associated gangue mineral information, chief amongst these being the content and mode of occurrence of naturally floatable talc and associated orthopyroxene.

Remediation of the environmental (and social) disturbances caused by opencast brown coal mining in the past in north-west Bohemia isa priority for state environmental policy. In order to provide a concept for full restoration of land following disturbance by opencast mining, a special interdisciplinary project supported by a grant from the Czech Ministry of Environment was started in 2000. The initial stage of the project was intended to summarize and evaluate the findings and the works carried out in connection with various reclamation activities in the afflicted area over a period of more than 50 years. The main aims of the three-year project are to make use of the best available landscape environmental management knowledge in order to harmonize the ecological, aesthetic, productive and social functions of new valuable landscape, including the recovery of historical continuity and an understanding of ?landscape memory?. The basic landscape functions were assessed on two different scale levels. On a large scale, the relevant attributes were investigated over the whole area of the Sokolov brown coal basin (220 km2). The data and experience acquired were used to define large-scale guiding principles for the rehabilitation of a post-mining landscape. On a small scale, the basic characteristics and functions of the landscape were analysed in the Litov-Chlum model area (2 km2). The information derived from this analysis was used to formulate a small-scale approach for the rehabilitation of the model area and also to define general methodological principles. The separation of nickel and cobalt from calcium, magnesium and manganese by solvent extraction using synergistic mixtures of carboxylic acids was studied. Addition of certain viable synergists to commercially available tertiary branched carboxylic acids, such as Versatic 10 (Shell) or Neodecanoic acid (Exxon), produced large synergistic shifts (?pH50) in the pH50values for nickel, and small antagonistic shifts (negative ?pH50values) in the extraction of calcium. Under the initial test conditions used (0.50 M each of Neodecanoic acid and the Mintek synergist, in xylene) a large separation (pH50Ca? pH50Ni= 3.09 pH units) between nickel and calcium in their extraction from 1.00 M sodium nitrate solutions was obtained, compared with only 1.11 pH units in the absence of the synergist. The selectivity series for the extraction of divalent base metals from 0.333 M sodium sulphate solutions by 0.50 M Neodecanoic acid and 0.25 M of the Mintek synergist in C12-C13aliphatic diluent was found to lie in the order (with pH50values in parentheses): Cu(3.42) > Ni (5.08) > Zn (5.58) > Co (5.73) > Mn (6.62) > Ca (7.48) >Mg (8.25). In batch counter current experiments, a simulated leach liquor containing (in gL-1): Ni 5, Mg 5, Mn 2, Co 0.5, Ca 0.5, Cu 0.1and Zn 0.1 was contacted with the mixed extractant in three stages at unit phase ratio and an equilibrium pH of 5.9. The recovery of nickel was 99.9 per cent and that of cobalt was 84.7 per cent, whilst the co-extractions of manganese, calcium and magnesium were 2.7,1.5 and 0.04 per cent, respectively. The recovery of cobalt can be enhanced by employing a slightly higher pH, although this will also increase the extraction of manganese, calcium and magnesium somewhat. Nearly quantitative stripping (99 per cent) of nickel from the loaded organic phase was achieved in a single contact at an organic-to-aqueous phase ratio of 4 using a simulated spent electrolyte containing 39 gL-1sulphuric acid and 33 gL-1nickel,thereby producing an ?advance electrolyte? containing 57 gL-1nickelat pH 3.5. Loading of acid into the organic phase was very slight, amounting to only 0.002 M H+in contact with the above-mentioned spent electrolyte. In general, overall experience has shown that the approach to the appointment of a project manager is given much attention, but little specific attention is given first to the risk associated with the project conceptual design and its overall executability within either the new legislative framework or the sustainability of the outcome. The risk in project executability and sustainability within the ?new age? legislative framework of the Mining Charter, etc, is itself however, of far greater importance. The degree of importance being defined by the intended projects impact on the business going forward. This is particularly the case where the intention of the implementation is effectively to turn around or even enhance a loss-making strategic investment like a mine or process plant operation in an ?old-order rights? or Brownfield?s operation. This paper attempts to highlight the importance of a ?pre-project project? (PPP) to mitigate the risk in the ?new age?, with specific reference to operational due diligence (ODD) and project conceptual design.

The processes by which particles and bubbles interact capture many of the central concepts of colloid science and hydrodynamics. This area of research embraces hydrodynamics, interfacial(including capillary) forces, particle and bubble behaviour and solution chemistry. In this review, we discuss collision, attachment and stability efficiencies. We deal with the identification of a flotation ?domain?, the deformation of a bubble surface upon interaction with a solid surface, the kinetics of three phase contact line expansion and the determination of attachment efficiencies through to the direct measurement of bubble-particle interaction forces. We have recently carried out a test of collision theory where the latter embraces both inertial and centrifugal forces. The real challenge is now to quantitatively describe the behaviour of real systems and to incorporate a reliable description of the behaviour of particles in flotation froths. The approach described is very robust when applied to flotation, both from qualitative and quantitative points of view, providing an intellectual foundation for understanding this complex process in separation science and technology.

This article uses the case of the Royal Bafokeng Nation to argue that royalties and dividends from mineral resources, if managed well, can provide direct benefits to the surrounding community even while the state collects its share of mining revenues through taxation. The key to this model is the effective management of the resource income flowing into community coffers. Where some of this income may fund urgent interventions in the community, a portion of the income can also be used to establish an intergenerational wealth fund to meet the needs of future generations. As a depleting resource, minerals like gold and platinum are not a sustainable source of income, and must be replaced over time by more regenerative income streams. These strategies and dynamics are manifest in the Royal Bafokeng Nation?s status as both community and quasi-municipality, a labour hosting and a labour sending community, a mine operator and a mine owner. The Royal Bafokeng Nation also owns one of South Africa?s largest community-based investment companies, which channels revenue derived from platinum deposits into a broad investment portfolio that in turn funds an aggressive social development program for 150,000 people living in twenty-nine rural villages.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Chem. Eng.) This paper describes the development and use of a process simulator to optimize gypsum recovery at Afmine, a small plant near Yzerfontein on the South African West Coast. The simulator consisted of models of the major plant equipment, viz. hydrocyclones, surge bins, settling tanks, a primary sieve and a dewatering screen. Experimental data suggested that the equipment could be modelled satisfactorily from data published in the open literature. Simulation studies have indicated that gypsum losses on the plant could be reduced substantially by means of some relatively minor modifications to the plant layout. Moreover, sensitivity analyses of the plant have indicated that optimization of the settling tanks should receive priority over the other process units.

Since then, the smelter complex has undergone considerable changes. Mineral economics, UG2 exploitation, and changing environmental legislation have enforced numerous process upgrades, yet a common-sense approach has always been adopted. This document details the major changes in the smelter complex at Mineral Processes (Minpro) over the past 15 years, and provides the rationale for the changes.
