The Rhodax inertial cone grinder, designed by France?s FCB Group Fives, is the result of three years, theoretical and mechanical research in the field of compression grinding by the research staff of FCB?s CRM minerals research centre. A number of potential uses have been assessed and will be discussed in the paper. The crusher is an inertial grinder that works on the pressurized bed fragmentation principle. The fragmentation force is caused by the rotation of unbalanced masses rather than by an eccentric mass, as is the case in a conventional crusher. This makes it possible to achieve very high reduction ratios. By controlling the speed of rotation of the unbalanced masses, the grinding force can be modified, thus changing the product size distribution. The paper describes the machine layout, operating principles, control parameters and will briefly describe the results obtained on reef, waste and ROM reject pebbles. Some comparisons are made with conventional crushing.

The estimation of the spatial variation of the b-value of the Gutenberg- Richter relationship is important for both the general interpretation of the mechanism of rock mass response and seismic hazard assessment. The interpretation of b-value as a parameter of rock mass response is discussed in this paper. The methods applied to evaluate the spatial variation of b-value and the algorithm for obtaining the magnitude of completeness and b-value for subsets of data are presented with some verification analyses. The algorithms presented enable the automation of a spatial evaluation of b-value.

Mineral resource evaluation and estimation process is not an exact science; however it depends on the knowledge and experience of the competent person and his ability to apply his mind, make reasonable assumptions, interpretations and exercise sound judgment in the mineral resource estimation process. The mineral resource evaluation results in a mineral resource statement are disclosed to investors. The minerals industry is presently undergoing rapid changes in legislation governing the public reporting of mineral assets. It has gone through different phases of development with respect to the reporting of mineral resources and mineral reserves (mineral assets). In the past no reporting was done and currently mineral assets are reported as a supplementary section that briefly describes the mineral asset termed ?the mineral reserve and mineral resource statement?. The current industry trend appears to be going towards recognition and disclosure of the mineral assets on to the balance sheet. This paper explores the salient issues behind the mineral resources and mineral reserve statement of vein and reef deposits published in the public domain. It also highlights the potential misleading consequences of these issues and which filter through to the valuation of these particular mineral assets. The creation of reporting standards in the minerals industry has made significant inroads in standardizing and consolidating the interpretation and understanding of the different classification categories in the industry in an effort to promote common interpretation towards these salient issues.

"SynopsisThe need to reduce weight while maintaining good mechanical properties in materials used in the automotive industry has over the years seen an increased exploitation of various steels to meet this new demand. In line with this development, the ferritic stainless steel family has seen a wide application in this industry, with the AISI 436 type increasingly being used for automotive trims and mufflers for exhaust systems, as well as a significant part of this steel’s application being for the manufacture of wheel nuts and wheel nut caps in trucks, mainly through the deep drawing process. However, there have been reports of some poor surface roughening of this material during deep drawing, with tearing and/or cracking also reported in some instances. This has been suspected to possibly be associated with some local differences in localized mechanical properties between grains and grain clusters of the rolled and annealed material.In order to investigate the poor surface roughness exhibited by AISI 436 ferritic stainless steel (FSS) during deep-drawing, Lankford values (R-mean and ?r), grain size, and microtextures of various sheet samples from this steel were studied. The chemical composition range for the samples was 0.013–0.017% C, 17–17.4% Cr, 0.9–1% Mo, and 0.4–0.5% Nb. The steels were subjected to various hot and cold rolling processing routes i.e. involving industrial direct rolling (DR) or intermediate annealing rolling (IR), and the drawability and final surface qualities of the steels were compared. It was found that the DR route gave an average R-mean and ?r value of 1.9 and -1.4 respectively, while the IR route yielded an average Rmean and ?r value of 1.6 and 0.52 respectively. The high ?r value for the DR processing route had a substantial adverse effect on the drawability. IR samples exhibited a smoother surface finish on visual inspection, while clear flow lines were visible on the DR samples, despite the fact that DR is the preferred industrial processing route due to the reduced production costs it offers. This observation was also confirmed through SEM examinations. The difference in the surface quality was attributed to microtexture. However, the mechanism responsible for this difference still needs to be identified."

Effective strata control is a prerequisite for maintaining an efficient mining operation. If the strata in the vicinity of an opening are not controlled effectively, it is impossible to perform a safe, efficient and economical operation. In this paper, the reasons and outcome of instability problems observed in roadways opened in clay and marl at the Bolu Colliery of Yeni Çeltek Establishment are investigated. Roadways under examination were located in a syncline causing high residual tectonic stresses. Factors affecting the instability have been studied thoroughly by examining geology and tectonics of the area, establishing convergence measuring stations to understand in situ behaviour of supports and laboratory tests to determine engineering properties of samples taken from nearby convergence measurement stations. As a conclusion, a new production strategy and a new support system are recommended to maintain stability.

"An investigation into pillar cutting was carried out at a platinum mine on the western limb of the Bushveld Complex. The focus was on crush pillar design and implementation in order to ultimately improve the compliance percentage for pillar cutting. The major findings from the investigation suggest that the pillar cutting problem lies with the implementation of the design rather than the design itself. Observations of the practical issues underground that prevent good pillar cutting were made. After these issues had been identified, recommendations to rectify these problems and a few other issues identified during the investigation were provided. The recommendations are aimed at improving the pillar cutting compliance and reducing the likelihood of pillar bursts or pillar runs, which will ultimately create a safer mining environment. The simple act of taking a sample implies that someone will use the information contained in the analytical result to make a decision about a course of action. In the mining industry, the decisions may involve huge capital commitments for opening or closing a mine, or marginal tactical costs that involve deciding if a truckload of mineralized rock should be sent to the mill for processing, or the waste dump. Sampling is among the most fundamental activities in a mining operation, and this paper aims to examine some of the technical issues that can assist in ensuring that samples are representative and correct. Insights into the scale of variability require that we disaggregate sampling variance into its component parts and evaluate each one individually. The work of Pierre Gy in understanding the different sampling errors is the first step in establishing an optimal protocol. This must be followed by the appropriate measures to ensure the protocol is implemented such that minimal bias is introduced in the sampling process. Even with these insights the possibility exists for large unseen and hidden costs can accumulate in a mineral development because of sampling errors. These hidden costs arise due to misunderstanding of the principle factors that affect the size of sampling errors, such as the mass of the sample, the effects of splitting a sample to reduce the mass, and the influence of the nominal particle size. The handling of sample material without due regard to the sampling characteristics of the material being sampled is also a major source of sampling errors. The most significant problem is due to the influence of the so-called volume-variance effect. This effect is a consequence of the support effect and the information effect both of which relate to the difference in size at which samples are collected and mining blocks are extracted. The information effect is a function of the availability of data at the time that decisions are made about the destinations of mineralized rock, namely the mill or the waste dump. Implementation of appropriate sampling protocols in the mineral value chain remains a challenge throughout the industry. The growing understanding and deepening appreciation of sampling theory and methods means we stand on the threshold of a new era for implementing and understanding appropriate sampling procedures and protocols. In the interests of optimal development of the national patrimony it is suggested that standardization through the identification of structural problems and continuous improvement of mining processes be instituted at a national level.

Elongates are commonly used as stope support in South African gold and platinum mines. To evaluate the effect of the inherent strength, stiffness and yield variability associated with elongates, a statistical method is presented which addresses and quantifies the support performance at various levels of certainty. The analysis, which is based on a normal distribution, makes use of force-deformation curves determined from multiple laboratory compression tests on the same support type. The applicability of the method is illustrated making use of actual performance capabilities of various types of elongates. In order to ensure a high probability that support units installed underground exceed the standard support performance curve established by means of laboratory tests, the statistical mean of a suite of tests based on the same support type is downgraded. The ?correction factor? is a function of the mean and standard deviation of the test data, as well as the sample size of units deemed to control the local rock mass stability. It is shown that downgraded performance curves based on a high probability (90 to 95percent) of support units exceeding this performance level are suitable to ensure that the design of support systems will in variably meet the design criteria. In the highly discontinuous hangingwall rock mass typically associated with intermediate- and deep-level mining operations, the interaction between adjacent support units is comparatively limited (at the support spacings commonly used). Therefore, the appropriate sample size (n) of the support units controlling the local rock mass stability should be n= 1. In shallow mining conditions, sample sizes of up to n=5 may be warranted, depending on the spacing of joints and other discontinuities in the hangingwall.

The extraction of copper(II) from sulphate solution was investigated using LIX®984N in kerosene. The parameters that could affect the extraction, such as equilibrium pH, extractant concentration, salt concentration, various diluents, and temperature, were separately investigated. On the basis of slope analysis, the complex formed in the organic phase is proposed to be CuR2, where R is the anionic part of LIX®984N. The extraction equilibrium constant and Gibbs free energy ( G) of the extraction process were determined. The positive value of H obtained from temperature variation studies showed that the extraction process is endothermic. The extraction of copper was lowest when chloroform was used as the diluent. Separation and recovery of copper from a synthetic copper-nickel solution containing 6.35 g/L Cu(II) and 0.58 g/L Ni(II) was carried out using 20%(v/v) LIX® 984N. The separation factor ( = DCu/DNi) was found to be pH-dependent. A two-stage batch countercurrent extraction was carried out at an O:A ratio of 3:4 at equilibrium pH 1.05 for extraction of copper from copper-nickel solution, followed by copper stripping from the loaded organic phase with 15% H2SO4 at an O:A ratio of 3:1.

The industry is buffeted by problems regarding retrenchments, unemployment, low productivity, rising costs, volatile exchange rates, commodity prices and government regulations. With these uncertainties facing the decision makers, what does applied technology offer the industry?s management? Modelling languages with risk analysis have been available for decades, but in the past their use has been very expensive, requiring large mainframe computers and lots of computer time. Today, PCs and laptops have incredible power, which makes interactive risk analysis affordable and viable for all enterprises, whether small or large. ?What is risk analysis? ?What is Monte Carlo simulation? ?What kinds of computer models need to be created to use risk analysis and Monte Carlo simulation effectively? This paper addresses these questions and illustrates, with a practical example in the mining industry, how risk analysis techniques can be used to support decisions in the climate of uncertainty.

Titania slag is used as feedstock in the production of titanium dioxide pigment. It (titania slag) is the product of ilmenite smelting,a process whereby ilmenite is reduced at high temperature utilizing anthracite as a reducing agent. Although various slag tapping configurations are employed throughout the ilmenite smelting industry, the method of tapping the slag from the furnace into bell shaped cast steel pots, was the subject of investigation in this study. The paper describes the formulation of a cooling model used to calculate and subsequently predict the temperature profile of a slagblock during its cooling within the various cooling environments of pot cooling, air cooling and water cooling. The model was calibrated against actual internal slag temperature measurements and verified with information obtained from both pilot and industrial scale blocks. The paper concludes with solidification results and their practical implication.

The most energy-intensive process in the mining industry is particle size reduction – comminution. The first phase of this process is blasting to fragment the rock from the initial Boussinesq’s halfspace size. Scientific literature demonstrates that the output of a blast in terms of fragment size distribution can be manipulated by varying the specific charge (powder factor) and charge distribution. This study focuses on the influence of blasting on the internal resistance of the blasted fragments; in particular the influence of the spatial distribution of charges. Small-scale blasts were performed on 14 marble blocks using different powder factors and charge distributions. Three control blocks were fragmented by mechanical means for comparison. The results show the correlations between charge distributions and the specific energy of mechanical comminution. Opportunities for adjusting charge diameter and distribution in opencast blasts to improve the performancet of comminution circuits are discussed.

"SynopsisAlmost 20 years have passed since the cutting-edge research by Thompson and Visser on the design and management of opencast mine haul roads was conducted in South Africa. This system is based on three principles, namely the structural ability to support the ultra-heavy truck loads, the selection of vehicle and environmentally friendly riding surface, and an appropriate level of maintenance to counteract wear and tear. Obviously, proper layout and geometry are essential.These principles have been implemented worldwide, and it is useful to review the lessons learned. The objectives of this paper are to present a critical review of the status of mine haul road design and management, and the impact that these principles have made on operations, particularly the cost-effectiveness. The paper briefly reviews the principles of the haul road design and management and the extent to which they are applicable. Case studies of a number of implementations are presented to demonstrate that the principles are sound and have been applied effectively. For example, at an international operation the transport cost of coal was 40% more expensive than anticipated in the feasibility stage, and this made the mining operation uneconomic. Correction of this problem resulted in a viable enterprise. Although designed for opencast operations, the principles are equally valid for underground operations, and initial development work will be discussed.The main conclusions are that the research approach is valid and its effectiveness has been demonstrated in a number of applications. The anticipated financial benefit has been derived, and has made the mining operations that used the principles more effective. Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, Pretoria University Substantial research in pyrometallurgy at the University of Pretoria started in 1980 with the appointment of Rian Dippenaar to the Iscor Chair, a position that he held until 1996, when Chris Pistorius became the leader of this pyrometallurgy group. This paper reviews the main research themes over the quarter-century from 1980 to 2005, as well as some of the industrial developments that have shaped the research approach. The main topics have been the use of electrochemical sensors for equilibrium measurements, ilmenite smelting, steel processing, and reduction.

A201 aluminium alloy is a high strength casting alloy with a nominal composition of Al-4.6Cu-0.3Mg-0.6Ag. It is strengthened by the O(Al2Cu) phase and the ??(Al2Cu) phase during heat treatment. Further strengthening of this alloy system can be obtained through the addition of transition elements, but care must be taken as other elements might have adverse effects on the mechanical properties. The objective of this study is to determine the influence of Mn on the tensile properties of rheo-processed Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy A201. ThermoCalc software was used to predict the different phases that can be expected in the alloys, and scanning electron microscopy(SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to investigate the actual phases that formed. The influence of these phases on tensile properties is quantified. SEM and ThermoCalc revealed that there is an increased amount of the Al20Cu2Mn3 with increasing Mn. The tensile properties showed that high amounts of Mn do have adverse effects on the tensile properties of alloy A201, especially the ductility. The research described in the paper was aimed at providing standardized information of cases of failed and intact coal pillars in the form of databases to researchers. It also offered the opportunity to take stock of the pillar stability situation in coalmining and to review the impact of the application of the safety factor formula for pillar design. It was found that the physical parameters of coalmining have not changed substantially over the last four decades. However, changes in the controllable parameters like pillar width, pillar width-to-height ratio and percentage extraction have all moved toward the more conservative side. Scrutiny of the database indicates that of all the failures recorded, only 23 occurred in panels that were mined after 1969, when one can assume that the safety factor formula was fully applied. If the pre-1969 practices had been continued, at least 144 collapses would have been expected. There has thus been a substantial reduction of pillar collapse cases, justifying the cost paid for the formula, which has shown to be in the region of 600 million tons of coal. It is evident that that are distinct differences in the natures of the failures among different coalfields. This justifies the attempts to derive seam or coal field specific strength formulae and is a topic that should be pursued.

The emergence of new steel grades is largely driven by the need to produce high quality steel at a competitive price. The principal aims are to attain ultra-high purity, (especially low interstitial elements) and ultra-cleanliness (by the control of the inclusion content and size). Whereas the steel used to build the Titanic contained 650 ppm sulphur, resulting in MnS stringer-inclusions 25 mm in length, modern quality requirements for arctic pipelines would only allow 10 ppm of sulphur and inclusions in ball-bearing steels must be smaller than 5µm. Most developments are aimed at hot-metal treatment before refining and ladle treatment after decarburisation. Because ferroalloys are added during or after the refining step, it is the secondary (ladle) refining production technologies that are of specific interest to the ferroalloy producer. Through ladle treatment, hydrogen and nitrogen contents are reduced, ultra-low levels of solute impurities are attained and the shapes as well as the composition of inclusions are modified. Steelmakers are concerned about the cost effectiveness of the use of ferroalloys such as consistent product analysis and delivery, improved financing arrangements and technical support. Minimal variation in product sizing is vital because it impacts on handling problems and because particle size determines the rate of particle dissolution. The required ferroalloy product quality depends on the specific use but in general sulphur, phosphorous and nitrogen contents are of concern. Apart from the presence of trace and impurity elements, ferroalloys also contain inclusions. For example, ferromanganese may contain MnO-MnS-SiO2 inclusions while high-carbon ferro-chrome may contain different kinds of Cr-Mn-spinels. The presence of these impurities and inclusions has a significant impact on steel production techniques and cost and hence, on the selection and use of ferroalloys. The interrelationship between ferroalloy quality and steel production technology is plant and product specific and hence, effective communication between ferroalloy suppliers and steel producers is essential.

Over several decades in Southern Africa the advance rates when sinking vertical shafts have declined significantly. The upside has been a substantial improvement in shaft bottom conditions and a commensurately improved safety performance, with an increasing number of shafts being sunk without fatalities and disabling injuries. This paper briefly reviews historical sinking rates and matches changed sinking productivity to the introduction of new sinking methods that have been adopted to eliminate/mitigate safety risks. Meeting the challenge of returning to historical advance rates whilst progressing in the quest for zero harm by utilizing three dimensional animated computer modelling is described. Making use of commercial modelling software makes it easier to evaluate different methods, sequencing, in shaft barrel ergonomics, and stage and shaft bottom layouts before procuring project plant and equipment. Benefits accrue not only in better communicating methods and configurations for detailed planning and design, but also during crew training. The traditional engineering ?as-built? drawing practice has been extended to the concept of an ?as executed? sinking model which seeks to capture operational experience and learning for future best practice. The paper concludes with some of the organizational culture challenges being overcome as this non traditional approach to shaft sinking optimization is being introduced.

The 2 360 t/h two module Phola coal preparation plant represents anew era of large plant in the Witbank coalfield designed to extend its life to 2020 and beyond. The plant uses the optimum processing model for Witbank coals, receiving a feed coal size of -50 mm, wet screening it into coarse and small coal fractions 50 x12 and 12 x0.63 mm before processing them in parallel through two primary DM cyclone sections, in order to make a 27.5 MJ/kg export floats product. The sinks are processed through a common high density DM cyclone section to produce a 21.5?23 MJ/kg thermal coal middlings product. The plant design incorporates the largest size DMS equipment used to date in South African coal preparation plants, i.e. 1 150 mm large diameter pump fed DM cyclones and 4.2 m width banana screens. The fine coal is conventionally processed by spirals, whereas the raw coal slimes are filtered using automated plate and frame filter presses and added to either the middlings or discards depending on its quality. The paper describes the database, innovative design concepts, construction, and commissioning.

Draglines are massive machines extensively utilized in opencast mines for overburden stripping. The demanding working environment induces fractures, wear and tear, and fatigue failures in dragline components and eventuates in extended maintenance, lengthy downtimes, and loss of production. The bucket is the main source of external loads on the machinery, since interactions with ground materials take place in this region. This study aims to develop a generic finite element model of the stress on an operating bucket. This entails (i) three-dimensional modelling of a dragline bucket, (ii) analytical estimation of resistive forces in the bucket movement, (iii) three-dimensional simulation of the moving bucket using finite element analysis (FEA), and (iv) sensitivity analysis to examine the effect of formation characteristics on stress variation. Simulation results imply that the drag hitch and digging teeth are the elements of the bucket that are most prone to failure. In addition, sensitivity analysis indicates that internal friction angle of the formation is the dominant parameter leading fluctuations in stress values. Changes in stress level are least influenced by formation density.
