In May 2009 a test work programme was carried out at the sorting laboratory of CommodasUltrasort in Germany which was aimed at establishing the efficiency of X- ray transmission sorting for the recovery of unliberated diamonds in a size range of +8mm. A PRO Tertiary XRT belt sorter with a working width of 600mm and a belt speed of -3mJs was used for the test work. Dual energy X-ray transmission sorting is a type of sensor-based sorting which uses an X-ray scanning system, The attenuation of the transmitting X-rays is measured at two different energy levels, Thereby it is possible to eliminate the effect of the particle thickness on the measurement result. The effective measurement results in a classification by elemental order based on the periodic table.

"The solid-state reduction of ilmenite concentrate with graphite was studied under argon atmosphere at temperatures between 1050°C and 1350°C. The rate of reduction increased with increasing temperature and decreasing particle size, with the maximum extent of reduction found to be 80% at 1350oC with a particle size in the range of -106 +90 µm. The activation energy for the reduction reaction was calculated to be 257 kJ/mole. The trivalent iron oxide was reduced first to divalent iron oxide and then to metallic iron. An annular ring of a partially reduced oxide phase containing metallic nuclei was formed around the core of ilmenite, which grew in size as the original ilmenite core shrank with progressive reduction. The reduction of titanium dioxide also took place during this stage, which produced the Magneli oxides in the form of TinO2n-1. The metallic phase had very high Fe and low Ti contents throughout the reduction, whereas the partially reduced oxide phase adjacent to the metallic phase was high in Ti and depleted in Fe. The metallic phase globules formed during this stage were small and are considered suitable only for leaching and not for other concentration processes. The core of the particle generally retained the composition of the original ilmenite. The purpose of this work was to remove iron and increase the titanium oxide content of the ilmenite to produce a high-titanium containing charge for subsequent smelting.IntroductionThe titanium-bearing minerals ilmenite (FeTiO3) and rutile (TiO2) are the primary natural raw materials used in industry to produce titanium metal and titanium-based products. The common titanium-bearing minerals are ilmenite, rutile, anatase, brookite, leucoxene, arizonite, and perovskite. Although the formula of ilmenite is commonly expressed as FeTiO3, the mineral can accommodate Mn and Mg, which are chemically bound in the form of (Fe,Mn,Mg)TiO3. Ilmenite concentrate can also contain Fe2O3 and Al2O3 in addition to the physically separable oxides such as SiO2 and CaO. The crystal structure of ilmenite is an ordered derivative of the corundum structure with a trigonal-rhombohedral symmetry. Fe2+ and Ti4+ ions occupy the octahedral sites, leaving the tetrahedral sites unoccupied. In each FeTiO3 unit, there are three O2- ions creating three octahedral sites, two of which are occupied by Fe2+ and Ti4+ (Wilson et al., 2005)."

This paper details an assessment of stemming practices at a South African opencast coal mine and their influence on ground vibration and air blast. Quantitative and qualitative analysis methods were used for the study. The parameters assessed for the quantitative analyses included stemming length, stemming material type, blast-hole depth, burden, and spacing. Pre-blast data from the mine was analysed to determine the deviation between actual and mine design stemming parameters. Mine design stemming length was also compared to the rule-of-thumb stemming lengths. Peak particle velocity (ground vibration) and air blast data from seismograph stations around the mine was analysed to determine the correlation between stemming length and excessive ground vibration and air blast. The qualitative analysis involved observations of blasting procedures at the mine to determine compliance with mine procedures. Some level of non-compliance of actual stemming parameters to design stemming parameters was found, which initially suggested that non-compliance may have contributed to excessive air blast. However, further analysis of the seismograph results indicated no direct correlation between stemming length and excessive air blast and ground vibration. Since stemming parameters are interrelated, it is crucial that all blasting procedures, including stemming, are executed in accordance with best practice, and recorded accurately. There is a need for digital systems for capturing on-bench blasting parameters, as the currently used manual data recording and reporting systems are inefficient and prone to error. Improvements to blast designs are possible through efficient and accurate data recording and reporting systems.

The Kriel Colliery is an Anglo Coal mine which is contracted with Eskom to produce No. 4 seam for Kriel power station. The mine previously found it uneconomical to mine No. 5 seam due to the low qualities and tonnages of the seam, both at the opencast and underground sections. An area has been encountered for the first time at Kriel Colliery opencast pit 5, where the tonnage and qualities of No. 5 seam warrant further investigation. The primary reason for the investi¬gation of No. 5 seam by Kriel Colliery is because of the advantage of the high selling price (R450/t) that the market is currently prepared to pay for the No. 5 seam. The aim of this project is to mine No. 5 seam economically without interrupting No. 4 seam mining operations. The problem is that the equipments that are currently being used at the mine belong to Eskom and are dedicated to mining No. 4 seam only, not No. 5 seam. Through geology investigation, it is found that the whole No. 5 seam (No. 5 seam upper and lower) has an average thickness of 1.8 m. It also contains a parting of carbonaceous shale which divides the seam into two parts. No. 5 seam upper contains less tonnage compared to No. 5 seam lower. The calorific value and ash content of No. 5 seam lower is far better than No. 5 seam upper, but would still require washing the coal. This makes No. 5 seam lower the preferred seam to mine because it meets the requirements of the customer which is Highveld Steel. It is a coincidence that the area containing No. 5 seam under investigation encounters high overburden problems. The problem of drilling to No. 4 seam was going to be encountered because the thickness of the overburden ranges from 35 to 39 m. The Gardner Denver at the mine can drill blastholes only to a depth of 34.5 m, meaning the full overburden will not be drilled at once. This means the mining of No. 5 seam will do favours for Eskom because the overburden thickness will be minimized. This then led to an agreement between Anglo Coal and Eskom to mine No. 5 seam because both companies benefit from the project. In order to identify a suitable mining method for No. 5 seam lower, literature studies took place. It is found that San Juan mine from the USA has similar geological features to Kriel Colliery's No. 5 seam. Through comparisons, it is found that truck and shovel mining would suit the geology of Kriel Colliery's No. 5 seam since San Juan mine is using it. The sequence of mining No. 5 seam lower allows for a clearance of two cuts between the truck and shovel operation and the dragline. The mining sequence of No. 5 and 4 seam will be in the order of top soil removal; soft overburden pre-stripping; pre-strip drilling; pre-strip hard overburden; No. 5 seam lower coaling; interburden drilling and blasting; interburden stripping and No. 4 seam coaling. Financial evaluation of the project shows that a contractor will charge Kriel Colliery (Anglo Coal) approximately R 102.2 million to mine No. 5 seam successfully. The sales of No. 5 seam lower will provide a profit of R99.4 million at a yield of 70% from the washing plant. The project is beneficial to both Eskom and Anglo Coal because Eskom will have eliminated the problem of pre-stripping and Anglo Coal will generate additional profit. Through investigation and analyses of the project, it is proven to be viable and should take place. This is after looking at the advantages that the project has for Anglo Coal and Eskom. The objective of this study was to develop, install, and test a small underground mobile refrigeration plant (MRP) to deal with some of the real problems associated with mine cooling in an operating mine. The requirement for cooling the underground environment is discussed with particular emphasis on the need for this method of cooling, with the concomitant benefits. The research investigated current methods of cooling and reasons for previous failures in MRP. Both static and dynamic simulations were conducted to increase the confidence level under operating conditions. Implementation and testing, resulted in ?lessons learnt? requiring modifications, which are documented. Actual results have been recorded. These results have proved that significant cooling via MRP is feasible. Main benefits include positional efficiency, cost per kilowatt of cooling and cooling opportunities for remote hot areas of a mine. Finally, a proven technology is now available for large-scale implementation in the mining industry. Now the ventilation engineer has another system of cooling, which can be utilized in the quest to create an occupational environment, which meets the physical and mental health requirements of the worker.

The mining industry remains the backbone of many economies in the developing world. Its resurgence in Ghana since 1989 was driven by the global paradigm which emphasizes private sector-led development as the engine of economic growth in developing countries. The historical importance of mining in the economic development of Ghana is evident in the country?s colonial name, Gold Coast (Akabzaa T. and Darimani A., 2001). Ghana earned $2.5 billion from mineral exports in 2007. 20,000 people are employed in large-scale mining whilst 500,000 are employed in the small-scale sector. Mining contributes about 7% of Ghana?s total corporate tax earnings, 41% of total exports, 12% of revenue collected by the Internal Revenue Service and 5% of Gross Domestic Product (Ghana Chamber of Mines, 2008). Gold dominates the mining sector and the country is Africa?s second largest gold producer after South Africa. Surface Mining, which refers to a method of extracting minerals from the earth by their removal from an open pit or borrows, requires a large tract of land for its operations (Wikipedia, 2008). There is therefore a continuous divergence of interest between land required for surface mining and other land uses such as farming and housing, among others. In recent years, surface mining has been promoted in many mining countries because of the following reasons: ?Cost considerations compared to underground mining; ?Safety considerations, compared to underground mining; ?Low grade ore which requires processing huge quantities; ?Location of the ore bodies; and ?Competition among gold producing countries for investors. This paper looks at the socio-economic impacts and challenges of surface mining by using Gold Fields Ghana Ltd. Tarkwa, Ghana as a case study. The company has a concession of about 208 sq km located in the heart of the Wassa communities in the Western Region of Ghana and undertakes surface mining like most of the other mining companies in the country. Gold Fields, Tarkwa mine produces 700,000 ounces of gold a year with the potential of increasing this output to 800,000 ounces after its current expansion programme. Some of the effects of surface mining identified were: 1. Relocation/Resettlement of host communities and its negative effects; 2. Disturbance to Flora and Fauna; 3. Disturbance to Sacred Places; 4. Land Degradation; 5. Noise and Air Pollution; and 6. Water Pollution. This paper sought to investigate the measures put in place by the government and the Gold Fields Ghana Ltd. to mitigate the above effects in order to ensure peaceful coexistence between the mining company and its host communities. It concludes that most mining companies presume the provision of socio-economic development in mining communities will lead to the company securing a social license to operate. This however is not true but rather effective community relations combined with socio-economic development. According to Gold Fields Ghana Ltds. model, this involves continuous community engagement, conflict resolution and comprehensive environmental monitoring programme which will all lead to effective community relations. The strategies to ensure socio-economic development involves community development programme, livelihood restoration programme and community training and employment. All these will then lead to sustainable development which will ensure the company?s social license to operate. Gold Fields? model is in line with the principles of responsible mining. With this model, the community feels they are part of the company and the social license of the company is guaranteed. Gold Fields? model, which has been tried and tested for the past five years, could serve as a template with suitable modification for local conditions for other mining countries where surface mines operate.

A series of parametric studies were carried out for a flotation cell using computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling to determine the local response of hydrodynamic performance measures to change in operating conditions. As an example, an Outotec cell was used to carry out the response analysis. The hydrodynamics of the flotation cell has been previously investigated by laboratory measurements presented by Schwarz et al (2019), and a CFD model of the cell was developed and validated using these measurement data (Schwarz et al., 2019). In this work, parametric studies have been performed by modelling the flotation cell at different stirring speeds and gas flowrates, varying above and below standard conditions. Predictions of void fraction, bubble size, bubble surface area flux and particle–bubble collision rate are presented showing the effects of increasing and decreasing stirring speed and gas flowrate around the base case. Generally, the total gas holdup in the flotation cell was found to increase with increasing gas flowrate. The bubble diameter was found to decrease with increasing stirring speed and increase with increasing gas flowrate. The collision rate increased with both stirring speed and gas flowrate. The parametric results show that there is a correlation between the bubble surface area flux Sb which is affected by stirring speed and gas flowrate, and the particle–bubble collision rate. With the collision rate as an indication of flotation collection, it is also possible to show that cell performance can improve more by increasing stirring speed than by increasing gas flowrate in a situation where everything else remains constant. The CFD results can form the basis for a Response Surface Method (RSM) analysis which can then be used for automated optimization of cell performance. A study on slag dispersion in a model of bottom-blown bath smelting converter was undertaken at room temperature. The aim was to investigate the behaviour of the dispersed slag phase at various operating conditions with very high gas flow rates in low slag volume (10%) systems. For simulation purposes water, paraffin-oil, and air were used to represent the bulk steel, molten slag, and gases respectively in a one-fifth cold model of the commercial 100 t Creusot-Loire-Uddeholm (CLU) converter used in the manufacture of stainless steel in South Africa. Dimensional analysis was done to correlate mathematically the dispersed phase holdup with the operating conditions and the modified Froude number. The overall expression of the holdup revealed that the dispersed slag phase decreased with the vertical distance from the original interface between the liquid phases. The dispersed phase also decreased with the radial distance in the water plume zone toward the sidewall. The holdup was apparently much higher on the side of the reactor where there were no tuyeres. The modified Froude number ensured the correlation between the model and the prototype.

This paper examines manning best practice in the Australian mining industry, comparing the mining of gold with mining of other commodities. In particular, the paper considers a range of mining operations and their manning levels as measured by operational benchmarking. The benchmarking results presented cover 7 open pit and 14 underground studies of gold mines in Australia from a database of over 50 studies. The data were collected as part of AMC?s benchmarking and operational improvement studies conducted between 1999 and 2009. The results examine overall manning levels in mining, processing and administration functions. Manning levels for a range of mining methods, including open pit and underground methods, are segmented. Productivity measures such as ore tonnes per man day and metres developed per man day are presented and where direct relationships can be established, the relationships are described. The proportion of supervisory to operations personnel and labour costs as a percentage of total operating costs is highlighted. Minimum manning requirements for the range of mining methods are indicated, irrespective of the size of the operation. The benchmarking results provide guidance by indicating a range of manning numbers and trends which are likely to be appropriate for the scale and type for a range of mining operations. When combined with benchmarked productivity and cost data, manning results help identify potential areas for business improvement, driving gains in the efficiency of labour. Finally, the paper considers perspectives on best practice for manning and the limitations in application of this type of analysis in a global context.

"The computer methods used by the French Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique, which are applicable to any type of ore deposits, are:(i) Ore reserve estimation. The data are either the core analyses or gamma leggings. To determine the spatial distribution of the ore, three different methods of interpolation are used. Two of these are based on the least-squares theory and the third one is an application of the regionalized variable theory. The interpretations of the orebody by the geologists are introduced in the computer program as often as possible.(ii) Optimal open pit design. From the spatial distribution of ore, the three-dimensional outlines of the optimal pit are determined by a geometrical algorithm which allows different slopes varying with the azimuth.Finally, the optimization of annual successive plans arc discussed."

The comparison study on adsorption of potassium normal butyl xanthate (PNBX) and sodium (nbutyl) dithiocarbamate (SNBDTC) on sperrylite mineral forms a basis in understanding the floatability improvement and paves a way for the design of collectors that may impact on a wide range of arsenide minerals. This study used a computational density functional theory (DFT) and experimental microcalorimetry approach to determine the adsorption energies of PNBX and SNBDTC collectors onto a sperrylite mineral surface. From a computational aspect, we considered the most stable surface plane of (100) surface, which had been found to give the lowest surface energy, compared to the other surface planes. It was observed that the PNBX and SNBDTC preferred to bridge on the As and Pt atoms through the S atoms. These findings showed that the collector adsorbed on the surface through both Pt and As atoms and indicated that the As atoms were significantly active in the adsorptions. We found that the adsorption energies were in the order: SNBDTC (–278.38 kJ/mol) > PNBX (–270.92 kJ/mol), indicating that the dithiocarbamate had stronger exothermic adsorption than the xanthate. From the microcalorimetry test it was also found that the SNBDTC was more exothermic than the PNBX and the adsorption energies were: SNBDTC (–473.50 kJ/mol) > PNBX (–331.13 kJ/mol). These results showed that the nitrogen atom in the SNBDTC collector had a great influence on the adsorption strength of the collector on the mineral surface. This is due to the electron deposition behaviour of nitrogen atoms compared to the electron withdrawing character of oxygen and as such the SNBDTC showed better collecting ability than the PNBX. These results paved the way for the design of collectors for sperrylite and other arsenide minerals and suggested that nitrogen in a collector may significantly improve the ability of the collector for improved recovery. An analysis of the state-observability characteristics of a dynamic tank-to-tank model of a flotation bank indicates that the concentrate-flow rate of each tank can be estimated from accurate measurements of the pulp height in each tank and the final tailings flow-rate exiting the final tank. Therefore, there is an opportunity to construct an observer (model-based soft-sensor) which can estimate the concentrate flow-rate of tanks in a flotation bank. The concentrate flow-rate, i.e. mass pull, is generally measured by means of froth image analysers on industrial plants. A model-based soft-sensor will not only provide a means to validate froth image analyser results, but could potentially substitute them as they are less expensive to implement and maintain. BHPBilliton is a large (US$32bn market capitalization) diversified mining group. Significant organic growth is planned through the development of a number of mining, processing and oil and gas projects, totalling some US$5.2bn over the next three years. The investment standards underpin the capital approval process, and incorporate the requirements for range and risk analysis of key input variables, including mineral resources. Public reporting codes for mineral resources and ore reserves (such as JORC) stipulate deterministic reporting of estimates, but are generally silent on any requirement for range or risk assessment, although they acknowledge the risk and uncertainty in the production of resource estimates. In contrast, public reporting of petroleum reserves allow for the use of either deterministic or probabilistic estimation, and for the latter, mandate the level of confidence required for proven versus probable reserves. Conditional simulation techniques, popular in the petroleum industry, provide an ideal tool forrange and risk assessment of the range of outcomes of key resource parameters, such as tonnagesand grades. Examples of a diamond deposit and of a porphyry copper deposit are presented. The understanding and quantification of mineral resource risk through a technique such as conditional simulation provides quantified information on the potential upside or downside. Computational modelling methods and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) were employed to investigate the interaction of a pyrite surface with thiol collectors. Modelling work was conducted in the presence and absence of water. Microcalorimetry was employed to investigate the resultant energy of interaction pyrite as a result of mineral-collector interactions. Sodium ethyl xanthate (SEX), diethyldithiocarbamate (DTC) and diethyl dithiophosphate (DTP) were investigated in this study. The results showed that the calculated surface energies and morphologies for FeS2 showed that (100) and (111) are the most stable surfaces. The morphology also indicated the appearance of the (100) and (111) surface facets and no presence of others. The calculated adsorption energies between thiol collectors and the pyrite surface were always more exothermic than the experimentally determined ones. When comparing different ligand types with the same alkyl chain length, the heat of adsorption of diethyl-DTC was greater than that of ethyl xanthate and diethyl-DTP for pyrite. Experimentally, the diethyl DTP barely adsorbed onto the pyrite surface and this may be due to a different mechanism of action. In computational calculations, water adsorption was found to reduce the reactivity of the Fe atom for the interaction with thiol collectors, and bring the adsorption energies closer to the magnitude of the experimental values. "This study evaluates the efficiency of using mechanochemical reduction to assist the extraction of zinc from zinc ferrites by alkaline leaching. The transition of zinc ferrite into a metastable state after mechanochemical reduction with metallic iron contributes to the ready dissolution of zinc from the activated zinc ferrites in alkaline solution. Zinc ferrites were mechanochemically reduced under conditions of Fe:ZnFe2O4 mole ratio of 2:1, using 5 mm diameter stainless steel balls as the activation medium at a mass ratio of balls to raw materials of 25:1. Subsequent leaching in 6 mol/L NaOH solution at 90°C resulted in more than 70% Zn extraction. These results may be used to further develop a hydrometallurgical process for recovering zinc from zinc ferrites in alkaline solution.IntroductionZinc is an important nonferrous metal required for various applications in batteries, solder, dielectric materials, and piezoelectric materials. High-grade, easily concentrated ores are becoming scarcer: to meet world demands for zinc, it is necessary to develop economical and environmentally safe metallurgical technologies that use secondary materials such as leach residues of roasted zinc concentrates and electric arc furnace dusts. The zinc in the majority of these wastes occurs in the form of zinc ferrite (franklinite, ZnFe2O4), which is very stable and insoluble in most acidic and alkaline solutions (Langova and Matysek, 2009; Youcai and Stanforth, 2000).Several pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes (Jankovi et al., 2014; Langova and Matysek, 2010; Morcali et al., 2012; Shawabkeh, 2010) have been proposed for the treatment of zinc ferrites. Pyrometallurgical methods are costly owing to high energy consumption and their emissions of toxic gases are considered an environmental problem; hydrometallurgical methods are preferred for process economy and environmental reasons (Copur et al., 2004)."

"The working environment for ground support installation in mines has improved during the last 20–30 years, with more mechanized equipment for installation of ground support elements such as bolts, cable bolts, and screens. Ground support installation productivity has, however, not followed the same development curve, remaining more or less constant. In some cases, for example the mechanized installation of bolts, productivity has even dropped. One reason for this is that modern mechanized bolt rigs are complex. In this paper we evaluate manual and mechanized ground support systems, propose a way to measure the productivity of bolt rigs, and make relevant comparisons between different mines and equipment. Some productivity measures for rock reinforcement are suggested, using productivity results from eight case study mines.IntroductionTo improve safety for operators and equipment underground, ground support systems (bolts, screens, etc.) are installed in mines to stabilize the rock mass (Hoek, Kaiser, and Bawden, 1995). Important questions to ask when selecting a ground support system include where ground stability problems are located, why they have occurred, how problems should be addressed, and when and how the ground support system should be installed (Hadjigeorgiou and Potvin, 2011). The performance of bolting and screening operations in underground mines is important for both safety and productivity reasons. With greater mine depths and an increasing focus on safety, ground support has become a significant bottleneck in the production process of many mines.Many factors play a role in establishing safe and stable underground structures. Equally, there are several factors to consider in productivity, including the mining method, organization, logistics, mechanization level, and procedures. Today, most mines in Scandinavia have changed from manual to mechanized bolting, as this improves operator safety and arguably boosts net capacity. Internationally, however, manual installation of bolts remains common, with some claiming that manual installation is more productive (Bawden, 2011)."

Scandium can be recovered from waste streams of other metallurgical processes such as red mud from the Bayer process and titanium dioxide acid waste. This is accomplished by an integrated process comprising leaching using acidic media, solvent extraction using organic solvents and stripping of Sc from the organic phase using NH4F solutions. The precipitation of scandium as (NH4)3ScF6 from NH4F strip liquors has been demonstrated at lab-scale with recoveries and purities greater than 98% and 98.3%, respectively. It is desired to assess the possibility of recovering the solvents for re-use in the process to improve its economy and environmental friendliness. Investigations have been conducted to recover alcohol by simple distillation from strip liquor-alcohol mixtures containing about 50 v/v% alcohol. The mixtures were obtained after anti-solvent precipitation of (NH4)3ScF6 using an alcohol to strip liquor volumetric ratio of 1:1. The starting strip liquor contained about 2000 mg/L scandium in 3 mol/L NH4F solution. In the recovery of methanol, the first distillate product collected had a purity of about 87 v/v% and this decreased slightly with time over two hours. The methanol distillate collected in the first 30 minutes with a purity of ca. 85 v/v% was re-used in anti-solvent crystallisation of (NH4)3ScF6 from the initial strip liquor, and the scandium recovery attained was about 98.6 w/w%, almost similar to that of 99.2 w/w% obtained using 100 v/v% methanol. For ethanol recovery, the first distillate product collected was approx. 84 v/v% pure and the distillate collected in the first 30 minutes with a purity of about 75 v/v% achieved a scandium recovery of about 97.2 w/w% in comparison to 98.5 w/w% obtained using 100 v/v% ethanol during anti-solvent crystallisation. This paper presents the vibrating mill technology and summarizes the grinding principle of ultra fine grinding. In addition, a variety of operations is described and the benefits of these different operating modes? product size and efficiency are specified. A case study of an industrial application is presented to show the integration of vibrating mills into grinding circuits. The primary focus is the overall process scheme of this technology, the installation and operating costs, as well as the design parameters required for best performance. There are a couple of dozen junior platinum mining companies coming into existence in Southern African and most intend to mine, concentrate the PGM?s in a flotation product and sell the concentrate to one of the major producers in South Africa. The price they will receive for their product and hence the return they achieve for their investment will depend upon the large number of factors that influence the market for such a product. Unfortunately the number of buyers is severely limited as it is dominated by the two major local producers, Impala Platinum and Anglo Platinum. Furthermore the current smelting technology has limited capacity for UG2 concentrates and high nickel concentrates will quickly fill any available base metal refining capacity. Few if any overseas buyers can compete for the bulky flotation concentrate produced. This paper will explore those factors such as metal recoveries, metal prices, operating costs, capacity constraints, deleterious elements, transport issues, metal premiums and discounts that are in play, types of flotation concentrates, processing capital costs, PGM grades, etc and their impact up on what smelters and refiners might be prepared to pay for such PGM concentrates. Ultimately simple graphs and equations can be developed for probably payment terms for such concentrates. Those who negotiate well will move to the higher return section of the envelope and those who use the concentrator facilities to produce the most saleable combination of flotation concentrates will enhance their returns. A deep and firm understanding of the issues surrounding this market is necessary in order to negotiate the best possible price for the seller.

The microbial leaching of metal sulfides is now an established biotechnological technology. Over the past 25 years, refinements in the engineering design of bioleaching processes have paralleled advances in our understanding of the diversity and role of the micro-organisms driving the process and the mechanisms by which micro-organisms enhance metal sulfide oxidation. Commercial success started with the treatment of refractory gold concentrates using mesophilic micro-organisms, followed by the development of tank bioleaching processes for the treatment of base metal concentrates. This was, initially, a mesophilic process with limited potential for recovery of copper from chalcopyrite concentrates due to slow rates and low copper extractions. The exploitation of thermophiles represents a major breakthrough in the development of bioleaching technology for the treatment of chalcopyrite-containing ores and concentrates. This development also opened the route to heap bioleaching of chalcopyrite ores, which is now a major focus of research programmes and piloting campaigns. This paper reviews the historical development of minerals bioleaching processes and gives an update on the current status of commercial tank and heap bioleach operations around the world.
