Currently the most widely used formula in pillar design is the power formula, which implicitly assumes a volume effect. This assumption is critically examined, and it is proposed .that a limiting strength value, the critical rock mass strength, be used for pillar design instead. A methodology is provided to determine this value. It is suggested that the effects of geometry on pillar strength are well described by a linear function and the power formula, for w/h ratios less than or equal to about 5. This approach together with the use of the critical rock mass strength, removes the volume effect. Various factors that affect pillar strength are examined. The concept of explicitly determining the stability of each component in the pillar system is briefly discussed. It is proposed that pillar design be expanded to a pillar system design procedure that incorporates the interaction of the pillar, roof and floor strata, and the loading system.

The use of dilute sulphur dioxide (SO2) gas mixtures for the oxidation/precipitation of manganese has been explored widely in recent years. The technical merit of the concept is well proven and implementation of the technology on commercial scale is imminent. This paper reviews the technology of manganese removal by means of dilute SO2 gas mixtures and highlights some of the challenges associated with its implementation on industrial scale. A brief review of the technology is presented; the review considers both the mechanism and chemistry of manganese oxidation/precipitation with dilute SO2 gas mixtures. The impact of variables such as temperature, pH and SO2 concentrations on the manganese removal process is assessed. Challenges associated with implementation of the technology on industrial scale are discussed. Gas dispersion is highlighted as a critical design consideration.

This paper reviews the major deposits of lower-grade chromite in the world, and a wide variety of methods used for the recovery of chromium from them. Gangue materials in more coarsely sized ores can be separated by gravity means, whereas flotation techniques are required for finer-grained materials. However, unless there is considerable Iron In the ores, physical means cannot increase the Cr/Fe ratios. Chemical techniques such as hydrometallurgical methods, chlorination, roasting and leaching, and smelting are required for this purpose. A greater understanding of the physical properties of chromites and the chemical reactions that take place in the recovery operations is required before. the recoveries from lower-grade chromites can be maximized. More efficient recovery operations can be realized If It can be shown definitively that the reduction of chromites occurs via either a gas-solld or solid-solid mechanism, for example. The effects of specific impurities on the chromite reduction reactions need to be better understood, as do reagent and pH control in the flotation of chromite.

The Hydraulic Institute has completed the task of developing a new ANSI/HI standard 12.1-12.6 (2005) for rotodynamic (centrifugal) slurry pumps covering nomenclature, definitions, applications, and operation. The standard provides examples of the different slurry pump types and contains an extensive section on pump and slurry definitions. The effect of slurry on pump performance is covered along with the pumping of froth. Reference is also made to ANSI/HI standard 9.6.7 (2004), which contains a new method for pump performance correction when handling viscous fluids. Classification of slurry services is established and then is used to determine limitations on velocities and total head per pump in order to obtain acceptable wear performance. The new service class, head per stage and other limits are directly related to capital and other cost considerations that will affect solids transport system economics. The writers review the contents of the new standard, highlight the main points, and discuss the reason for the slurry classification, corresponding limits and expected implications, particularly with respect to operating costs of the pumps in solids transport systems.

The investment decision under uncertainty by H. M. WELLS, Pr. Eng., M.Se. (Fellow) The future outcome of a proposed investment is uncertain at the time the decision must be made to accept it or reject it. This uncertainty can be expressed in the form of a probability distribution. An attempt is made to rationalize the investment decision under these circumstances, especially when the range of possible outcomes extends into both the acceptable and unacceptable domains. A rigorous definition of risk is proposed, and a criterion of risk aversion is developed that forms the boundary between acceptable risk and unacceptable risk (called the loss limitation line). It is shown that this decision criterion can also serve as a quantitative yardstick in the evaluation of various possibilities for 'tailoring' the proposal to mlke it more compatible with the particular financial circumstances of the company concerned.

Ingot casting and wire drawing In Iron Age Southern Africa by R. H. STEEL (Visitor) This paper describes the experiments that were conducted in 1974/1975 on two related aspects of Iron Age copper technology in Southern Africa: ingot casting and wire drawing. Three types of ingot were successfully cast: the St Andrew's Cross ingot, the marale ingot, and the musuku. It is suggested that the 'studs' on the musuku are not the remains of broken-off rods as previously proposed by other investigators, but that the ridged pattern is an ornamental feature. Copper wire was successfully drawn with similar tools and according to the procedures described in the literature on African Iron Age wire drawing. It is concluded that these accounts are generally accurate and that the pre-European metal workers are worthy of respect for the results they achieved with primitive methods.

A 36-year-old A-S-H pump, manufactured to designs dating back to 1936, was recently presented to the Gold Mine Museum by Envirotech. The pump, a B-frame three-piece rubber-lined Hydroseal unit, was supplied by Envirotech's predecessor company, Denver Machinery, and was installed by South Roodepoort Main Reef Areas Limited on 22nd March, 1948. Steel rolling Conferences on steel rolling, sponsored by The Iron and Steel Institute of Japan (ISH), and supported by iron and steel institutes in many countries of the world, have been held since 1980. A generalization of Gy?s 1979 model for the variance of the fundamental sampling error has been proposed at WCSB2?2005 by Geelhoed. This generalized model can potentially lead to a better correspondence with actual sampling processes. However, a new parameter is required by the new model: ?the parameter for the dependent selection of particles?(Cij). It is important that this new parameter, which is at the basis of the new theory, is well understood in the sampling and blending community. In order to clarify the meaning of Cijand to prevent potential misinterpretation of Cij, we discuss the difference between Cij and an intuitively associated, but different, parameter: ?the parameter for the dependent selection of particle types?(Mij). In this contribution, the theoretical difference between both parameters is clarified. Simulations demonstrate that, numerically, the difference between Cij and Mij can be large. Some additional advantages of the approach which uses Cij are discussed: (i) the approach based on Cijis more general; (ii) in all cases where Mij is known, Cij can be determined as well, while the reverse is not true; (iii) an equation already exists that relates the sample variance to the value of Cij.

A method is described for the determination of cyanide in gold slurries, based on amperometry. The measured current is proportional to the concentration of cyanide, and is not effected by pH or by the concentration of oxygen in solution. It is also unaffected by other ions that may be present in gold-leaching solutions, including sulphide, thiocyanate, and thiosulphate. The current depends on the temperature, and an activation energy of 17,9 kJ/mol was determined Since the current is controlled by the mass transfer of cyanide to the anode, it depends on the conditions of agitation. In tests on an operational gold plant, slurry was pumped directly from the top of the leaching tank, through the measuring cell and back into the tank. The results indicate that the instrument is a promising alternative to the instruments currently available. The readings from the instrument remained in calibration for at least two days, showing that the instrument would need to be re-calibrated by the operating staff at regular periods.

After the presentation of the paper the President said: "Thank you, Professor Howat, for so ably introducing the paper prepared by yourself, Dr Jochens and Mr Wolhuter. Once again we are deeply indebted to you for bringing to our attention a new development in the metallurgical field, this time a technique for assessing the suitability of slags for the production of slag cement, and thereby providing a means of turning a waste material into a valuable asset. May we hope that this will lead to an end to unsightly slag dumps and, at the same time, to some conservation of our local limestone resources. Discussion within this Institute on the problems of cement manufacture, has of recent years been all too infrequent, and we thank you for bringing this interesting and important subject again to our notice. We are doubly grateful to you and your co-authors. May I now call on Dr Stutterheim, Deputy Director of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, to contribute to your paper, and to tell us something about the Conference on the Chemistry of Cement which he attended in Tokyo towards the end of last year." The influence of two weeks of microclimate cooling on the state of heat acclimatization by N. B. STRYDOM, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Illinois) (Fellow), A. J. S. BENADE, M.Sc. (Potch.) (Visitor), and W. H. VAN DER WALT, B.Sc. (Potch.) (Visitor) Five volunteer Black subjects were acclimatized according to the climatic-room acclimatization procedure, and their states of heat acclimatization were determined by the usual heat-stress test. The subjects thereafter wore pre-frozen jackets in a somewhat higher environmental temperature (33,9/35,6 °C). stepping at the same rate as before for four hours a day for fourteen days. The heat-stress test was repeated and followed by a similar test at the higher environmental temperature. It was found that fourteen days of microclimate cooling in a very hot environment had no adverse effect on the degree of heat acclimatization. The sweat rates during microclimate cooling remained high, even though no sweating is possible beneath the pre-frozen ice-jacket. which indicates that there is an increase in sweat rate from the areas of exposed skin.

It is a great honour to officiate at the celebration of the centenary of the South African Institute of Mining and Metalurgy. Tonight's festivities bring back happy memories of my association with South Africa's mining industry during my tenure of office as Minister of Mineral and Energy Affairs. They also remind me of the illustrious personalities who have preceded me on this podium. The Pioneers They include Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, who spoke in 1909 on the eve of the Union, General Smuts, and, on many occasions during the 1920s and 1930, Jan H. Hofmeyr. The basic issues addressed by them continue to enjoy the Institute's attention today, namely the optimal and safe exploitation of our country's mineral resources and cost-effective extraction of minerals from their ores. Translated into the Institute's key objective it reads: To initiate and give effect to the means whereby the requirements for technology and scientific knowledge if the minerals and metals section if the South African economy is satisfied.

Selmer-Olsen, Consulting Metallurgist, Amcor Limited, on 'Trends in Ferro Alloy Production' was published in the May issue of the Journal and comprised information and data relating to new developments in ferro alloy production in various parts of the world. This was followed by a paper-'Conductivity and Viscosity Properties of Slags produced in ferro-alloy manufacture' by D. 1. Ossin et al. This was a record of laboratory test work on slags containing both lime and magnesia, corresponding with the composition of slags encountered in the production of ferro chrome alloys when a dolomite flux is employed. The third paper-'Review of the work of the Pyrometallurgical Research Group of N.I.M. and Metallurgy Department, Wits.' presented by Dr P. R. Jochens, leader of the Research Group, outlined the progress made on ten different research projects presently under way in the Department of Metallurgy. These projects range from studies of the kinetics and mechanism of the reduction of chromite ores through the determination of the activities of MnO in slags to phase studies and melting point determinations in the alloy systems Cr-Fe-Si-C and Cr-Fe-Si. A new feature of this Colloquium was the introduction of the discussion panel composed of four or five individuals known to have special knowledge or interest in the subject under duscussion. Mr J. J. Coetzee was chairman of the first panel, Professor D. D. Howat of the second and Dr R. E. Robinson of the third. During the discussion of Mr Selmer-Olsen's paper an interesting contribution was made by Mr Jack Hayley of Transalloys (Pty.) Limited who pointed out that the lowest power cost in the U.S.A. was that from the TV A at 6 mils per unit (0,43 cents S.A.) while costs from other sources were 7 to 8 mils per unit (0,50 to 0,57 cents S.A.) He also referred to the use of 'pile sintering' of ore fines plus coke at certain ferro alloy plants in the V.S. and to the recent practice of 'graphitising' the paste used for Soderberg electrodes. The last session in the afternoon was devoted to a group discussion on 'Practical problems in Arc Furnace Operation', Mr H. R. Reid of Middelburg Steel Alloys (Pty) Limited occupying the chair, members of the panel being Mr J. Meintjies (Rand Carbide Limited), Mr J. Benn (Amcor) and Mr E. J. Jackson (Transalloys (Pty.) Limited). Mr Reid initiated the discussion by talking of the design and composition of electrode shoes, mentioning the use of the 85/15 Cu/Zn alloy and the comparison of hollow shoes and shoes cooled by tubes. Mr Meintjies discussed electrode management with particular reference to breakages, and dealt with casing and fin design and the welding of fins. Mr Benn dealt with aspects of closed top furnace operation with particular reference to the control of eruptions in the furnace and indicated that preheating of the raw materials might be well worth considering together with the development of a system for the detection of the water vapour present. Mr J ackson was concerned with shells, linings, refractories and tap holes. He deprecated the use of oxygen for opening the tap hole emphasising how uncontrolled use of oxygen led to loss of shape of the tap hole and quite severe burning out of the front hole resulting in time and labour in repairs. A notable feature of the Colloquium was the free discussion 'from the floor' of the hall. Many valuable and highly pertinent contributions were made spontaneously and usually in reply to some controversial topic raised by the discussion group.

"In an environment like the mining industry, which is characterized by different stakeholders with multiple objectives, multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) is a useful approach for optimal decision-making. The application of MCDA techniques in the mining industry has predominantly been in mine planning and related problems, although no comprehensive survey has previously been undertaken to establish the application trends. A survey of the use of MCDA techniques was therefore conducted using case studies from the literature. It was noted that often two or more methods are applied to the same problem in order to increase confidence in the solution derived. As the number of criteria and alternatives increases, some methods become inefficient. A combination of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method with other MCDA techniques was the most frequently used approach, indicating the efficiency of the AHP method, especially when evaluating problems with more criteria and fewer alternatives. A combination of fuzzy theory with AHP or other methods incorporates uncertainty. The findings from the survey will benefit users applying MCDA techniques to solve mine planning and related problems.IntroductionA country’s natural resources serve the needs of different groups of people within the country. These different groups are collectively known as stakeholders (Herath and Prato, 2006). Stakeholders have different needs, preferences, and expectations, which describe and define the criteria to be considered in decision-making. The options available as solutions describe the alternatives in decisionmaking theory. The criteria and alternatives have to be evaluated simultaneously when making decisions, and this is when multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) techniques become invaluable (Herath and Prato, 2006) because the human mind is considered to be limited when solving complex and intangible problems with several criteria and alternatives (Saaty, 2007). MCDA techniques belong to a broad group of techniques called multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) techniques. The other group of techniques within MCDM comprises the multi-objective decision-making (MODM) techniques. MODM techniques are generally used to solve problems with an infinite number of alternatives, while MCDA techniques are generally used to solve problems with a finite number of alternatives (Musingwini, 2010)."

On 23rd November, 1982, a party of 80 members of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy left the Wanderers Club grounds at 07hOO, and were driven in two luxury coaches to the stainless-steel mill of Southern Cross at Middelburg. Southern Cross is a trade name adopted by MS & A (Middelburg Steel and Alloys), who operate two Alloy Divisions (at Middelburg and Krugersdorp) and one Steel Division (at Middelburg). METAL '83 The International Precious Metals Institute has scheduled a seminar on the platinum -group metals for Williamsburg, DB.A., on 10th to 13th April, 1983, and has announced its keynote speakers for each of the seminar's five sessions. Metee '83 METEC - the International Exhibition for Metallurgical Technology and Equipment with Congress - which was to have been held in Dusseldorf from 14th to 20th May, 1983, has been cancelled, and will probably take place in June 1984. Sampling Sampling and sample preparation are crucial activities in many areas of chemical engineering, in the energy and food industries, in metallurgical processes, and in mining and mineral engineering.
