The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should be of sufficient high standard and contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Their publication should be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to mining and industry. Authors must realize that because a mine shaft is new or the mine itself is newly established, this in itself does not justify a paper unless significantly new techniques or processes were involved in the opening-up procedure. A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent than an amorphous mass of less well chosen material. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Papers should be submitted at least three months prior to the intended date of presentation. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only of foolscap paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 11/2 inches, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. Galley proofs are sent to the authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parenthesis ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991 and proof correction symbols in British Standard 1219c. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. ft for foot and feet, lb for pound and pounds. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. Likewise ft and in. should be used, x' y" only being permissible in diagrams and plans. Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 6 in. wide. Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: 1, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the margin of the typescript where drawings and diagrams, etc. are to appear in the text. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. SUMMARY ABSTRACT OR SYNOPSIS It is most important that the summary should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be resorted to only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus . . .1 . . . 2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal.

Ceramic filtration plates are used for dewatering slurries with high solid concentrations and particles in the size range of 30 μm to 150 μm. After extensive operating times, the ceramic filter plates at Minas Rio in Brazil begin to blind due to the precipitation of barium sulphate on the surface of the ceramic filter plate, which reduces the overall efficiency of the filtration process. Further research is needed to identify the barium precipitate phases on the blocked filter plates and its thermodynamic and kinetic behaviour in the system. A crystallography analysis was performed on the sample and the results showed that there are two different sets of precipitates formed on the filter plate: grey crystals which were large and scatted on the filter plate and red micro crystals that covered the entire surface of the filter plate. The red microcrystals on the sample were identified with XRD, which indicated that the sample contained barium sulphate in the mineral form barite. Experiments were conducted to determine the optimum conditions under which barium precipitation will occur. The conditions tested as a possible driving force for barium sulphate precipitation were the effect of temperature, pH and concentration. The pH and temperature ranges were pushed to both the lower and higher boundaries. The effect of temperatures as low as 15oC was studied and pH levels of 7 and upwards. The first nuclei started appearing at a pH of 7 but significant growth is promoted at higher pH levels. The X-Ray diffraction analysis confirmed the phase of the precipitates formed, and the orthorhombic crystallographic structure formed is a characteristic of barium sulphate. The use of SO2/air gas mixtures as an oxidant to precipitate Mn from Co(II) leach liquors was investigated. The effects of SO2/air ratio, pH and temperature on Mn precipitation were evaluated. It was found that the use of SO2/air gas mixtures resulted in significantly higher Mn precipitation kinetics compared to using air or pure O2 alone. The SO2/air ratio was varied from 0% to 6% SO2(v/v) in air and similar Mn removals were achieved at 0.75% to 3% SO2 at pH 3. The solution pH was varied from pH 2 to pH 4; Mn precipitation did not increase considerably from pH 2 to pH 3, but increased significantly at pH values higher than pH 3. Cobalt co-precipitation also increased as pH increased, with 1% Co co-precipitation at pH 3. An increase in temperature from 30°C to 60°C also increased Mn precipitation and 100% Mn precipitated at 50°C. Cobalt co-precipitation also increased significantly with an increase in temperature. An activation energy of 25 kJ/mol was calculated from the Arrhenius plot, which is an indication that the precipitation reactions were both chemically and diffusion controlled. XRD analysis showed that Mn precipitated in the form of Mn2O3 instead of MnO2 that was predicted from thermodynamic data. SEM and XRD analysis also revealed that the precipitate consisted mainly of gypsum or bassanite (99%), with the Mn containing phase (< 1%) distributed within the gypsum phase. This research study includes studies carried out on the recovery of unburned carbon in the ashes of Tuncbilek Thermal Power Plant. Bottom ashes have been identified by X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence. These samples are potentially of class F type and have significant amounts of unburned coal. According to the ash amount that units in the thermal power plant produce, and the analyses of the samples mixed, which used certain amounts in flotation tests, it was found that the bottom ash includes 91.47% ash in dry form and 8.53% combustible matter, and the lower calorific value is 491 kcal/kg. Optimum flotation conditions to get the unburned carbon were subsequently determined by examination of the optimum flotation grain size, pulp density, collector type and amount, depressant type and amount, frother type and amount, agitation speed, and froth-taking time. While the lower calorific value of the thermal power plant bottom ashes of the 3rd , 4th and 5th units and the mixed bottom ash sample was, respectively, 959, 469, 279 and 491 kcal/kg in dry form, it increased to 2490, 1312, 786 and 1348 kcal/kg in the product obtained as a result of flotation in optimum conditions. Modelling and scheduling for Grootegeluk coal mine, situated in the north- western Transvaal, is by means of a series of modular systems. Modelling of the multilayered body, which is part of the Waterberg coalfield, was based on a detailed study of the behaviour of coal and waste qualities and the sub- sequent use of standard geostatistical techniques. A notable improvement on previous methods was attained. Scheduling procedures and systems were developed to model a multibench pit producing coal for several metallurgical plants as well as a power-station. Scheduling was done by producing a series of longitudinal cuts, the cuts being subdivided into increments. By allocating cuts to certain periods, the resulting calculated product tonnages were com- pared with production targets, and by iteration a final scheduling sequence was determined.

When activated carbon is used for the recovery of gold and silver from Witwatersrand gold-plant solutions, severe fouling of the carbon by calcium carbonate is experienced. Also, difficulty is encountered in the retention of the adsorbed silver on the carbon because it is displaced by gold. The acidification of plant pregnant solutions before they are contacted with carbon was therefore investigated as a means of overcoming these shortcomings. The results from batch laboratory experiments on the effect of pH on gold adsorption from plant solutions and from synthetic solutions of high ionic strength indicated reaction rate optima in the region of pH 5 and below pH I. The effect of pH on the equilibrium capacity constant for gold adsorption onto activated carbon was also studied, using both a plant solution and a synthetic solution of high ionic strength. In the case of the plant solution, the results suggested only a marginal change in carbon capacity for gold in the pH range 12 to 6, with significant increases in capacity at lower pH values. In the case of the synthetic solution of high ionic strength, the capacity constant was found to increase steadily as the pH was lowered from 12 to I. It was also found that the gold adsorption capacity of the carbon was significantly better for the synthetic solution. No precipitation of gold from the pregnant solution (gold content approximately 6 g/t) was noted as the pH was decreased to values as low as ,. However, about 25 per cent of the 0,6 g/t silver content was found to have precipitated when a pH value of 3,0 was attained. Further substantial precipitation of silver took place as the pH was lowered further. The investigation was extended by the passing of suitably acidified gold-plant solutions through one or more columns containing activated carbon. Preliminary results showed that the particle size of the carbon had a significant effect on the rate of gold adsorption. No displacement of adsorbed silver by gold was observed to take place at an influent pH of 5. In a typical continuous &apos;merry-go-round&apos; operation involving three columns in which gold was eluted from the lead column every 48 hours, effluent values averaging 0,001 g/t gold could be consistently achieved under simulated plant-operating conditions. The results were obtained at relatively high velocities of influent solution, resulting in very little hold-up of gold in the carbon-recovery circuit. More than 99,9 per cent of the gold and more than 99,8 per cent of the silver was recovered in the adsorption circuit, while the elution data indicated an average elution recovery of 99,8 per cent of the adsorbed gold and 98,2 per cent of the adsorbed silver. Elution of the carbon was carried out at 91 QC. This involved pretreatment of the carbon with a sodium cyanide solution, followed by elution with deionized water. At a loading flowrate of 66 bed volumes per hour, the indicated take-up of metals on the carbon in the lead column was as follows; 53 k g/t gold, 6 k g/t silver, 57 k g/t copper, 14 k g/t nickel, and I k g/t zinc. Only a trace of cobalt was adsorbed. At an elution rate of 1,7 bed volumes per hour, the lead column was found to be completely stripped in under 5 hours, with concentrations of gold in the eluate reaching 6 to 7 g/l. Besides the excellent adsorption and elution results obtained when acidified pregnant solution was used, no fouling of the carbon was indicated, and the pressure drop across the three columns was considered to be well within practical limits. When compared with conventional zinc precipitation, the carbon process would appear to have considerable economic merit, with strong indications that significant savings would be possible both in capital and operating costs. Further pilot-plant experiments, preferably on a gold plant, would be required before a meaningful cost comparison could be made with the existing process.

"This article presents laboratory test work conducted on an African haematite ore to determine the influence of the flotation pulp pH on the final iron grade and recovery. Results show that a combination of an isodecyl ether propylene amine/amino acetate and 1,3-propanediamine, N-(3-(C10-C16-alkyloxy)propyl)-derivatives collector is suitable for separating haematite from quartz. Higher iron grades were obtained at pH levels between neutral and pH 9. This underlines the importance of the surface charge effect of the ore on its flotation characteristics. The results serve as good baseline conditions for further optimization. IntroductionBeneficiation of iron ore by flotation is widely used in Brazil, India and China. In Africa, however, this practice is not yet commercially developed.The aim of this test work is to serve as a starting point by establishing suitable pH conditions for the development of a practically implementable reagent suite, which will then be included in a larger beneficiation circuit for producing high-grade iron ore sinter feed.In the literature, African iron ore types are graded as low-grade (60.0–62.9% Fe; 8.6– 12.5% SiO2 and insolubles), high-grade (66.0– 69.9% Fe; 0.8–4.5% SiO2 and insolubles), and meduim-grade as the remaining portion (Astrup et al., 1998). The low-grade ore used in this work contains less than 60% Fe.For Brazilian ores consisting of a combination of haematite and quartz, it is common to use corn starch as a depressant and ether amine blends as collectors with additional frothing characteristic (Araujo et al., 2005). Work by Turrer and Peres (2010) shows the possibility of using other depressants successfully as well.The main mechanism of the reverse flotation of quartz from iron ore is based on the electrostatic theory of flotation. This is due to the strong pH dependence of the zeta potential of the mineral edge planes on silicate particles (Fuerstenau and Pradip. 2005)."

Pseudomonas spp was isolated from mine water and tailings samples collected from mining effluents and mine dumps in the Gauteng and Northern provinces of South Africa respectively. Adsorption properties of Pseudomonas spp were then tested for the removal of Cu and Co initially from their synthetic sulphate solutions, subsequently from effluents derived from metallurgical operations. The effects of experimental conditions such as pH, temperature, time, volume and metal concentration on the efficiency of the biosorption process were studied. Absorption of 45% Cu (pH 6, 37°C, 24 hours) and 40% Co (pH 6, 37°C, 24 hours) was observed from solutions with low concentrations (0.07 M). A maximum of 73% and 65% of Cu and Corespectively were recovered from the mine water samples derived from effluents.

The treatment of gold-plant tailings with ferrous sulphate to remove the cyanide is currently in use, on several gold plants. In some cases there is scope for optimization the process. The present work provides a detailed study of the reaction between cyanide and ferrous sulphate. Optimal conditions for the removal of total cyande required a ph of 5,.5 to 6,5 and an Fe:CN molar ratio of 0,5. Ferrocyanide ion is shown to be unstable In aqueous acidic solution, with rapid oxidation to ferricyanide, (Fe(CN) 6 ), and formation .of Fe(CN)5H2O3- at pH values below 4, The precipitate from the reaction between cyanide and ferrous sulphate consists mainly 01 Insoluble Prussian blue, Fe4[Fe(CNI&!.3,and IS shown to be unstable in the presence of alkaline solution, since it decomposes rapidly at pH values above 7 to form ferrocyanide, (Fe(CN)6 ), in solution and various insoluble iron oxides,

GENERAL Invitation to attend O.F.S. Branch Meeting: Members of the Witbank/Middelburg Branch were invited to attend a branch meeting of the O.F.S. Branch on the 15th November. The subject of the meeting would be a talk on the Hendrik Verwoerd Dam Project and up to 25 members could be accommodated on the nights of the 14th and 15th November by kind invitation of members of the O.F.S. Branch. A questionnaire would be issued at a later date, to obtain the names of those interested in attending the meeting. PAPER FOR PRESENTATION The Chairman called upon Mr G. H. J. Kitson to present his joint paper, entitled: &apos;Photoelectric readings; their significance for dust control on collieries.&apos; G. H. J. Kitson (Member) and Y. J. F. Haven (Visitor). After Mr Kitson had presented his paper, both he and Mr Haven answered questions from the floor. The Chairman then thanked Mr G. H. J. Kitson for presenting the paper, and the meeting closed at 6.15 p.m.

Held on the 22nd March 1972 at Kelvin House. Four papers were presented at this colloquium, which was attended by approximately 120 people. The first paper, &apos;Flotation Research Work at the N.I.M. research group, University of Natal on the modelling of a Flotation Process&apos; was presented by Dr R. P. King, the leader of the N.I.M. Research Group in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Natal. A discussion panel, under the chairmanship of Dr R. E. Robinson with Mr M. Dawson (PMC), Mr E. Roux (FOSKOR), and Dr B. K. Loveday (NIM), discussed the potential application of the theoretical work on flotation modelling to industrial processes, and alternative approaches to providing a way of control of flotation plants. The second paper, &apos;Fundamental Studies of the Flotation Process the Work of the National Institute) for Metallurgy&apos;, was presented by Dr N. P. Finkelstein. The discussion panel for this paper was under the chairmanship of Professor D. D. Howat,and had as its members Mr H. P. Carlisle (JCI), Professor D. le Roux (University of Pretoria), and Mr E. Rudolph (Anglo American Research Laboratories). A lively discussion on this paper ensued, with several contributions from the floor. After lunch, Mr S. K. de Kok, Assistant Consulting Metallurgist, Anglo Vaal, presented a paper on &apos;The Flotation of Copper and Zinc Sulphide from Prieska Ore&apos;. The paper was discussed by a panel comprising Dr V. C. Lovell (NIM), Mr A. Gilbert (General Mining), and Dr D. Legge (Anglo Vaal), under the chairmanship of Dr L. Bushell. This discussion, in which many members of the audience participated, revolved around the difficulties associated with the production of copper and zinc concentrates and the lack of fundamental information on the behaviour of copper and zinc sulphides in flotation. The final presentati0n was a paper, &apos;The Recovery by Flotation of Cassiterite contained in Gravity Concentration Plant Tailings&apos;, presented by Mr E. B. Viljoen (Metallurgy Department, Goldfields South Africa Limited). The discussion, led by a panel consisting of Mr O. Tant (Goldfields Laboratories), Mr J. Levin (NIM), and Mr R. I. Shanks (NIM), under the chairmanship of Mr H. Cross (Goldfields South Africa Limited) referred particularly to the use of new reagents for the flotation of tin, with particular emphasis on the fundamental relationship between reagent composition and its ability to float this type of mineral.
