The magnesia-carbon refractories used in the ConArc process experience severe wear as a result of the varying slag composition during the blowing phase. This work determines the basicity range in which minimum as well as maximum refractory wear was experienced by the magnesia-carbon refractories during service. In order to determine an optimum slag composition, the crucible test in an induction furnace was used. The magnesia-carbon refractory bricks were cut into cylindrical crucibles to which a synthetic slag in the form of pellets was added. The basicity (B2) of the slag was varied from 0.5 to 3. Tests were done at 1 600°C for one hour. Apart from the crucible test in an induction furnace, visual inspection and SEM analysis were also done to investigate the corrosion mechanism. FACTSage® predictions about the interaction between refractories and slag were also done. These predictions were compared to the actual results attained. It was found that the extent of corrosion by slag attack decreases as the basicity increases. The most severe corrosion of the MgO-C refractories occurred at a basicity of 0.5 whereas the optimum basicity is above 2.0. SEM analysis indicated severe slag attack at the lower basicities with no visible refractory-slag interaction at higher basicities. TheFACTSage® predictions supported most of the actual findings. PAPERS FOR PRESENTATION The President: "We have two papers today, and I am first going to call on Dr Stander the Head of the Water Division of the C.S.I.R., who IS well known to many of you for his work and talks on pollution, who has had more than a little to do with this industry, and who has been I would say, of the greatest possible assistance to the mining industry in overcoming the problems of pollution which are so prevalent in industry of this nature. He, Mr Henzen and Mr Funke have written this paper, 'The disposal of polluted effluents from mining, metallurgical and metal-finishing industries, their effects on receiving water and remedial measures.' This is the Water Year, as you know, and it is most appropriate that we should have such an authority to talk to us on this very important topic. I now have much pleasure in asking Dr Stander to introduce his paper." After the presentation of the paper the President said, "Gentlemen, I am sure that you would like me on your behalf, to thank Dr Stander very sincerely for a paper which I think has enabled us to get a completely new slant on the Water Year. There are many people who have put their finger on this campaign and said, it is all a gimmick. There are others-I suppose notably some of the bridge clubs which operate on week-day afternoons in Parkview-who seem to think that this is a quick way of getting early rain. Of course, it is not. This is a most important paper which we have had given to us this afternoon. You probably found it here when you arrived and have not read it-I was very lucky to be able to read it last night, and there is an awful lot of meat in it. For as long as I have been associated with mining in any way, there has been a problem of polluted effluent-of effluents carrying a mineral load from mining, and I think Dr Stander is absolutely right-and, of course, the Commission is right when they say that this is not merely the problem of mine management or mine owners-this is a problem which affects every single human being in this country.

"The synthesis of 3-hydroxy-2-naphthyl hydroxamic acid (H2O5) as a collector for bastnaesite is described. The flotation performance of H2O5 with respect to bastnaesite was investigated by flotation tests, measurements of the surface adsorption capacity, and polarizing microscopy. The results indicated that H2O5 exhibits superior collecting performance compared with direct flotation recovery of bastnaesite, with recoveries above 90% at pH 8–9. The adsorption mechanism of H2O5 on bastnaesite was studied by solution chemistry analysis and ?-potential tests. The results showed that the adsorption of H2O5 is associated with the types and concentrations of hydrolysis products of rare earth cations on the bastnaesite surface. At pH 8–9, the hydrolysis-dominant components RE(OH)2+ and RE(OH)2 + of the rare earth cations were adsorbed onto the bastnaesite surfaces, which were considered to be the major positive active points and were beneficial to chemical adsorption of the reagents. The pH range of 7–10 was optimum for bastnaesite floatability, and the adsorption of H205 on bastnaesite was by means of chemical adsorption through formation of a five-membered ring chelate. IntroductionThe rare earth elements (REEs) have long been known as ‘industrial gold’ and are widely used in the petroleum, chemical, ceramic, metallurgical, and permanent magnet material industries because of their special physicochemical properties (Chen, 2011; Krishnamurthy and Guptac, 2002; Esquivel, Bohe, and Pasquevich, 2002; Abrahami, Xiao, and Yang, 2015). Demand for REEs is growing in response to continuous advances in science and technology. Currently, most REEs are extracted from bastnaesite ((Ce,La)CO3F) (Chelgani et al., 2015; Yosry, 1990), which is recovered from rare earth ores by flotation. Typically, hydroxamic acids are used as bastnaesite collectors (Xu, 2015; Ren, 1997; Mousumi and Venugopal, 2016). Research into the mechanism of interaction between hydroxamic acids and bastnaesite is important for improving the recoveries of bastnaesite. However, there have been few studies that examine this mechanism."

The fines produced is not suitable as feed material for the subsequent rotary kiln and the electrical arc furnace. The need for briquetting the ferronickel ore is premised on the minimisation of fine particles in the rotary kiln as well as improving charge permeability in the furnace, and improving overall process safety. Briquetting may be defined as an agglomeration method in which fine particles are compressed under pressure. It consists of three different technologies: vibropressing, roller pressing and stiff extrusion. The current study focuses on evaluating the performance of ferronickel briquettes generated, using roller-pressing technology. Physical properties, chemical properties and metallurgical properties of the briquettes were used to evaluate their performance and quality. Standard ISO tests for iron ore pellets were used. Size degradation as a result of reduction was measured using the ISO 4696-1 test. The decrepitation of the briquettes at the point of entry into the rotary kiln was evaluated using the ISO 8371 test method at a temperature of 700oC. The degree of reduction was evaluated using the ISO 4695 test procedure. Average green briquette compressive strength of 559 N was reported at a moisture content of 16% with an average drop number of 19.1. Increasing the moisture content has a detrimental effect on both the compressive strength and the green briquette yield. The drop number is expressed as the number of drops until breakage, when a briquette is dropped from a 1 m height, decreased with an increase in moisture content. Yeast-derived bola-amphiphiles have attracted considerable attention for their applications in various industrial sectors in recent years. However, only a few studies on this class of surfactant were reported to be relevant to mineral processing applications. In this paper, one of the novel surfactants, acidic glucolipid obtained from Candida bombicola sophorolipids and modified by using Penicillium decumbens naringinase substrate has been evaluated for its interaction with chalcocite and calcite minerals because of a new Cu-ore Nussir deposit in Norway containing calcite impurity. The interaction of glucolipid biosurfactant with copper sulphide and carbonate minerals was investigated with zeta potential, adsorption and FTIR studies, and also by Hallimond tube and bench scale flotation tests using pure minerals and Nussir copper ore, respectively. The results illustrate collector adsorption and flotation of copper sulfides at neutral pH. The bench-scale flotation results demonstrate that copper sulphides can be selectively floated from carbonate and silicate gangue minerals. This study underlines the glycolipid’s high potential for its use as collector for flotation of valuable copper sulphide minerals. Keywords: Flotation, biosurfactants, adsorption

Due to environmental limitations and the scarcity of freshwater, flotation using seawater or desalinated seawater as process water becomes more common for mining operations. On the other hand, seawater has been reported to affect the flotation behavior of sulfide minerals. Few reports are available on influence of pyrite depression, recycled seawater and lime consumption on flotation by using seawater. In this study, the flotation tests were performed using ore sample to investigate the effect of pH with seawater and process water used in plant on the flotation behavior in a laboratory-scale flotation cell and a pilot plant-scale. The results of laboratory scale flotation indicated that copper and molybdenum flotation kinetics decreased with increasing pH. Furthermore, the iron (mainly pyrite) recovery decreased with increasing pH. The pilot plant-scale flotation test showed that water with a higher concentration of magnesium and calcium (plant processes water) consumed a higher amount of lime. Because of low lime consumption and high copper and molybdenum recovery and grade, pH 8 is suitable compared with pH 8.5 for flotation. The depletion of favourably located and higher-grade mineral deposits, combined with more favourable metal prices and higher capital costs, has stimulated research into heap leaching of lower grade ores and wastes. This has resulted in renewed interest in heap leaching of uranium ores, and in the development of processes for the bacterial heap leaching of low-grade chalcopyrite ores and the acid heap leaching of nickel laterites. A complete programme of heap leach testwork typically involves a sequence of bottle roll tests and column tests, followed by piloting on test heaps. The initial testwork is aimed at determining the amenability of the ore to heap leaching, which depends on the characteristic of the ore with respect to porosity and permeability to leach liquor, acid consumption, metal recovery and percolation. Subsequent phases of the testwork focus on the development of the process design criteria for the treatment of the ore. Basic techno-economic models have also been developed as a tool for the initial estimation of heap leach viability. Mintek has also developed in-heap monitoring probes, coupled to an operator guidance system, in order to assist the operator in achieving optimal conditions for bacterial growth and heat preservation during pilot-plant operation.

Chile is the main producer of copper in the world and lately the mining industry has suffered challenges due to the lack of water in the north of the country, along with the new policies of not using fresh water for the industry. This has prompted the use of seawater as an alternative source for mining. Several studies have been driven due to this new scenario, which have shown that seawater can be beneficial, if certain ions are removed from the process. This is the Mg that generates precipitates at high pH, that have been shown to make mining operations difficult. In particular, thickening operations are impaired by the presence of Mg ions, where aggregate formation and sedimentation decreases substantially. Our studies suggest the competence of the precipitates in adhering to the polyacrylamide (HPAM) flocculant and not towards the surface of the quartz minerals. This motivates the present work to use molecular dynamics to study the adsorption of a HPAM molecule on quartz surfaces and the surfaces formed by Mg precipitates. The surfaces are immersed in a saline solution or seawater that includes the HPAM molecule. Results are obtained by measure the adsorption frequency and duration. We obtained that the HPAM molecules are preferably absorbed on the surfaces of magnesium hydroxide. This gives us a good agreement with what is observed experimentally and strengthens the premise of the competition of hydroxide with the flocculant. A variety of backfills is presently being placed in different gold mines. The backfills are pumped as slurries to stopes where they are discharged into some form of retaining paddock. The effectiveness of fill as a support medium will depend on a number of factors. These can largely include (i) inherent properties of the material, e.g. particle size, shape, distribution and com- position, and (ii) conditions of placement. The terminology required for describing backfills is introduced, and the various laboratory-measured properties are presented for a variety of fills. Finally, the properties of the fills as they are placed underground are discussed.

"A method of optimizing the design of a processing plant has been developed which minimizes capital and operating costs for average stripping ratios and ore characteristics. Models were developed to describe the operating characteristics and costs involved in various operations such as up-grading, leaching and solid-liquid separation.The options available in up-grading policy and the relation between the cut-off grade and the costs incurred subsequently in the treatment of the ore formed the basis of the optimization. To arrive at an optimum plant configuration and a set of operating parameters, the interrelation between grinding size, leaching temperature, leaching time, and various plant recycle options was investigated."

"I have been involved in the refractory industry for many years and at some time or another I have designed materials, tested materials, manufactured materials, installed materials, in fact I have done everything except actually chemically analyzed a refractory material.So I would not even begin to tell you how to analyse a refractory material. I'm sure everyone here knows more about chemical analysis than I do.However you could regard me as a customer with and perhaps the insights I have developed may help in putting the role of chemical analysis in the Refractories into perspective.For a start, let's take a step back and ask why we test refractories. The refractories handbook of the American Foundry Association gives four reasons:1. To determine appropriate specification.2. For quality control, to ensure conformance to specifications.3. To provide special property information not available elsewhere.4. For postmortem analysis to determine property changes in service and provideinformation that can point the way to better service.I want to discuss these points with regard to the role of chemical analysis and in particular the abuse of in house chemical analysis facilities. Ten Council meetings were held during the year with an average attendance of seventeen and the standing committees held 45 meetings. FINANCE The annual accounts, which are attached to this report, show an excess of expenditure over income of R4,608 compared with R2,124 last year. This deterioration can be attributed largely to two important factors, namely an increase in secretarial fees of RI, 789 and an increase in the loss on the Journal from R2,343 to R3,508. In addition, our contribution to the expenses of the Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers increased by R607 from R549 to R1,156. The increase in secretarial fees is partly due to our increased demand for services and partly to increased salaries. In order to maintain its essential services it has been necessary for the A.S. & T.S. to increase salaries in order to keep pace with commerce and industry. With regard to the Journal, we did not expect immediate dramatic results from the changes that were effected as from the beginning of last year in the arrangements for publication. However, the improvement has been even slower in materialising than we expected. This situation is being watched carefully and we will not hesitate to make further changes if necessary. It became clear early in the year that the financial position was deteriorating and your Council decided that it was essential to meet the situation by raising subscriptions and entrance fees. At the same time it was decided that there are no grounds for a distinction between Town and Country members and that in future the scale for the compounding of subscriptions should be based on anticipated future membership, rather than past membership. These changes have had only a minor effect on the accounts under consideration. The MacArthur Forrest Memorial Fund shows an excess of income over expenditure of R132 and the total fund was, therefore, increased by this amount to R4,338. The balance sheet shows that the market value of quoted shares and debentures decreased during the year from R13,059 to R6,567, while accumulated funds now amount to R17,959 compared with R22,567 last year. It will also be noted that we are holding R25,844 on behalf of the Symposium on Opencast Mining. MEMBERSHIP Twenty-eight Fellows, twenty-four Members, seventeen Graduates, twenty-five Associates and twenty-seven Students were elected during the year. MEMBERSHIP DRIVE A committee was established to organise a drive for membership as it was felt that there are numbers of persons in our mining and metallurgical industries who are not yet members but who qualify for membership. Members of the committee were allocated responsibility for campaigning in sections of industry and for publicising the aims, objectives and advantages of belonging to the Institute.

OBITUARY The President: "It is my sad duty to announce the death of Henrik Johannes Van Eck, Honorary Life Member, who joined the Institute in 1929 and passed away on 18th February, 1970. Dr van Eck started life as a chemist and chemical engineer and, as we all know, he rose to become one of our most distinguished leaders of industry in the country. On many important occasions we, in this Institute, have been privileged to have him address us on subjects which were always of great importance and relevance to the developments in this country. He was a man of great vision and imagination and could put across his ideas in a most eloquent and convincing manner. In his important position as chairman of the Industrial Development Corporation and of Iscor, whatever he said carried great weight. Busy as he was he always found time to participate not only in the affairs of this Institute but in many other technical and public bodies. His passing is a great loss to South Africa and we in this Institute wish to associate ourselves with the many other tributes which have been paid to this great man. We extend our sympathy to his wife and family and as a mark of respect I would ask you to rise and observe a few moments silence." PAPERS FOR PRESENTATION The President: (i) "Mr Lee, may I call on you to deliver your paper entitled 'A new bubble pick-up technique as a rapid flotation test method'." After the presentation of the paper the President said: "The paper which Mr Lee introduced this afternoon was a short one but was nonetheless important in that it described a new tool for use in flotation test work. Those of us who have experienced the frustration of trying to solve flotation problems by trial and error methods know what this means. I well remember 25 years ago at T.G.M.E. trying to improve the recovery from the flotation plant there by trying various combinations of reagents and then having to wait a couple of days for the assay office to give results. Even then, on the small scale laboratory tests which had to precede full scale tests one could never be sure that the results obtained were reproducible on the full scale. Here it seems we have a relatively simple apparatus which can measure instantly the effectiveness of various reagents under different concentrations and pH values, etc. It is most important, I believe, that developments of this kind be reported in our journal for the benefit of all involved in such work, not only so that we know about it but also in order to provoke constructive discussion which might lead to further developments. The Impala Platinum Limited Base Metals Refinery in Springs, South Africa, refines convertor matte containing base metals and PGM?s (platinum group metals) using a hydrometallurgical process. In addition to a PGM-rich concentrate that is further refined, the Base Metals Refinery produces nickel (in powder or briquette form), copper cathodes and cobalt powder. Five leaching stages are utilized to remove the base metals and impurities from the PGM concentrate. The project described in this paper involves a radical redesign of the second stage leach autoclave with the aim of reducing maintenance costs and downtime, increasing throughput and ensuring a safer working environment. The second stage leach process at the Base Metals Refinery, produces a PGM-rich residue through the extraction of copper and any remaining base metals from the first stage leach solid residue material. Leaching is performed in an autoclave operating at a pressure of 600 kPaG and a temperature of 140°C to 150°C. Concentrated H2SO4 is added to the feed to produce a solution with a free acid content between 10 and 30 g/L and a pH of less than 2. Oxygen is passed into the 1st and 2nd compartments of the autoclave. As a result of the aggressive, highly oxidizing conditions within the autoclave, the original design utilized a heavy wall carbon steel shell with lead lining and two layers of acid bricks. The bricks acted as a wear resistant material and ensured a low surface temperature at the skin of the lead lining, whereas the lead lining acted as a corrosion barrier to protect the steel shell. These brick lined autoclaves were heavy, maintenance intensive and prone to catastrophic failure. A radical autoclave redesign was needed to reduce the high costs of manufacturing, installation and operation. Finite element modelling was used to optimize the design and various high alloy materials were investigated for the application. Based on extensive test work, the carbon steel shell was replaced with duplex SAF 2205 stainless steel in the new design. The use of this highly corrosion resistant material, eliminates the need for the lead and brick linings and reduces the wall thickness requirements substantially, resulting in an increase in the available volume for the same external shell dimensions. The vessel is welded in circular sections to form an elongated, impermeable, cylindrical body, with several agitator nozzles and compartments. The first new duplex stainless steel unit has been in continuous operation for more than 24 months and its performance has exceeded the highest expectations. The design was so successful that a patent has been registered. The major benefits of the new stainless steel design include increased throughput, improved performance, less downtime and a safer working environment. Lead has been eliminated and replaced with a more environmentally safe material, and the total lifespan of the vessel has been extended. In addition, the autoclave project has made significant developments in advancing the field of welding and optimizing the integrity of welding quality standards in South Africa.

South African technikons The six autonomous colleges for advanced technical education in South Africa were established in terms of the Advanced Technical Education Act (Act 40 of 1967). However, since the inception of these colleges, it has become clear that members of the public find the name difficult to use and to remember. Consequently, these colleges, which play such an important role in the community, were not always correctly identified. Die forging The 9th International Conference on Die Forging will be held from Monday, 4th to Saturday 9th May, 1981, in Diisseldorf, Federal Republic of Germany. It is being organized jointly by the Forging Committee of the Verein Deutscher Eisenhiittenleute and the Vereinigung Deutscher Freiformschmieden. High-temperature alloys An International Conference on the Behaviour of High Temperature Alloys in Aggressive Environments will be held in Petten (North-Holland) from 15th to 18th October, 1979. Strategic minerals The National symposium on the availability of strategic minerals, which is being organized by the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy in collaboration with the Fellowship of Engineering, will be held at the London Press Centre, New Street Square, London EC4, on 20th and 21st November, 1979. The symposium has as its main objective consideration of those minerals that may pose problems of availability in the United Kingdom. Underwater mining The 10th Annual Underwater Mining Institute is scheduled for 1st to 3rd October, 1979, at Galveston, Texas. The Institute will be cosponsored by the Sea Grant College Programs of the University of Wisconsin and Texas A & M University and by the Marine Science Institute of the University of Texas it is being held in co-operation with the Association for Marine Mining. The performance of the improved microclimate suit by N. B. STRYDOM M.Sc., Ph.D. (Illinois) (Fellow), A. J. S. BENADE, B.Sc. (Potch.) (Visitor), and W. H. VAN DERWALT, M.Sc. (Potch.) (Visitor) An assessment has been made of a new improved microclimate jacket when worn by men working for four hours in a hot environment (wet-bulb temperature of 33,9°C and an air speed of 0,4 m/s) and at work rates of 35 Wand 70W. At the lower rate of work in heat, the use of microclimate suits maintained the rectal temperatures of the men at almost the same level as when they worked without that protection at normal room temperature (20°C). At the greater rate of work without protection, the men's rectal temperatures rose to 40°C within two to three hours, so that they could not complete four hours of work. When they wore microclimate suits, they easily completed four hours of work, and their rectal temperatures were lower than when they worked at the lower rate without protection.

In my view, the establishment of the level at which South African gold output is at some kind of optimum is an interesting though somewhat academic exercise. Contribution by D. M. Hawkins* The thesis of the paper is a very interesting one, but, before it is used as the basis of any firm proposals to restructure the mining industry, which changes may be irreversible, one should be very sure that the basis of the calculations is sound. Niewenhuizen* The hypothesis advanced by Mr Monro that the demonetization of gold in August 1971 introduced a major new policy variable, namely the supply-pricejdemand-price relationships, into the decision making process touches on a matter that has never really been given serious thought by the industry.
