"In a technologically advanced era, where process control is accurately maintained within the smallest error margins, and accuracy and precision are continuously improved, sampling is still left to the lowest paid employee in the company without training him or her properly to understand the relevance and importance of the task. In this paper the objectives of sampling in a process control environment is discussed and an attempt is made to link it to the theory of sampling. Some of the practical problems associated with implementing theoretical sampling principles in an industrial environment will be elucidated and some examples given on how compromises are made. Different methods of sampling will be discussed with real life examples from different manufacturing industries."

This investigation aimed to simulate the experiments performed by Nic Gay (Gay, N.C.1976. Fracture growth around openings in large blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression. International journal of Rock Mechanics and Minining Sciences and Geomechical Abstracts, vol. 13. pp. 231-243) on fracture growth around openings in blocks of rock subjected to uniaxial and biaxial compression, using the Elfen discrete element code. The results of the physical experiments indicated a number of trends that were successfully replicated in the numerical simulations, including crushing ahead of the face, the formation of a sub-vertical tensile fracture at centre-span, the formation of groups of fractures originating from the crushed face zone, the formation of large corner-to-corner fractures which precede sample failure, and linking of slot corner and sample corner fractures leading to sample failure. In addition, other features were apparent that were not reported by Gay. It is believed that these took the form of conjugate shear fractures (as reported by Gay in a previous paper) and other features that may have been altered or inhibited by the presence of pre-existing structure in the physical samples. It was found that the samples, though nominally made up of the same rock type, must have had significantly differing properties. The presence of pre-existing structures may have contributed to this discrepancy. Strain measurements from the physical experiments were reasonably well matched, except where the gauge lay directly in the path of advancing fractures.

The purpose of the project was to conduct a feasibility study to determine if the current operating bottom dump trucks that haul coal should be replaced with rear dump trucks. The engineering availability of the bottom dump trucks was lower than targeted while the operating costs are the highest of all coal haulers within the Anglo Coal opencasts. To determine if it is feasible to replace the current bottom dump trucks with rear dump trucks, a production profile simulation was conducted to determine the number of rear dump trucks that would be required to meet the annual coal hauling requirements. The total capital and operating costs of these rear dump trucks were also determined using a total cost of ownership model. These were compared with the current costs of the bottom dump trucks to determine if it is financially feasible to replace the bottom dump trucks with rear dump trucks. Having considered the capital outlay that would be required to replace the bottom dump trucks with rear dump trucks as well as their respective operating costs, it was concluded that the current bottom dump trucks should be replaced with rear dump trucks. Other factors were considered in coming to this conclusion.

Process and steel chemistry differences in hot rolled Al-killed low carbon strip steel between the hot charge route (HCR) as practised in a compact strip production (CSP) plant and the conventional cold charge route (CCR) have been studied. This was done with reference to differences in reheating practice, hot rolling practice and steel chemistry through emphasis on the effects of solubility and reprecipitation of AlN in the two process/product combinations and its effect on ferrite grain size development. An earlier modelling study on the evolution of the austenite grain size in both of the above hot rolling processes has also now been extended to include an estimate of the possible effects of retained strain after the last finishing pass on the ferrite grain size. As part of this study the equilibrium solubility trends of AlN in a number of boron-free low carbon Al-killed strip steels with low and high sulphur content from the two respective processes was investigated by the thermoelectric power (TEP) technique and differences in the effects through the derived solubility equation of Log[Al][N]=2.6?9710/T at typical slab reheating temperatures was demonstrated. Ferrite grain size modelling using the significantly lower Ar3 transformation temperatures generally found in hot rolled low carbon strip steel produced in the CSP plant using the HCR compared well to the larger grain size produced in the conventional CCR strip rolling plant. Metso Minerals Cisa have developed VisiofrothTM - a system which calculates parameters of the froth surface using vision from remote cameras mounted about individual flotation cells. The parameters calculated from this system can be utilised within process control strategies to achieve stabilisation or optimisation of the flotation process. As part of a JKMRC AMIRA P9 field campaign, froth vision was collected from various cells operated at different air rates and froth depths within Rio Tinto's Northparkes copper roughing and scavenging circuit. At the same time, samples were collected to determine the cell metallurgical performance at each operating condition. These froth images have been processed using the VisiofrothTM system with froth velocity, bubble size, froth collapse rate and various froth colour parameters calculated. These parameters have been compared to the measured concentrate flow and concentrate grade produced at each condition. This analysis shows that the concentrate tonnage flow is strongly correlated with froth velocity whereas the concentrate grade is best correlated using froth velocity in combination with a bubble stability parameter which affects the bubble size distribution on the top surface of the froth. This paper summarises the results from this analysis as well as an overview of the VisiofrothTM system and the parameters that are measured by the software.

Labour-intensive narrow reef stoping, as traditionally practised in South African gold and platinum mines, is almost unique in the modern first-world mechanized mining environment. Shortcomings of the system include the ever increasing cost of labour, a cap on achievable productivity and a poor safety record, particularly in the field of rock-related accidents. In the absence of sustainable alternative technologies, the South African mining industry has spent millions of rands improving the present system, focusing on improving workplace safety. This paper details the changes to stope support at Impala Platinum?s Rustenburg operations, and the impact on rock-related safety performance. The use of a dense hangingwal-support configuration extending right up to the face would enable greater levels of safety and productivity to be achieved in stopes, and becomes a practical proposition if water jets are used for stope cleaning. Such an arrangement opens the way for extending the use of water hydraulic power to the whole stoping operation. This, in turn, can provide further productivity benefits and significant savings in working costs. With al the necessary equipment being available, such a system could be introduced immediately, although the designs of props and rockdrills are not yet ideal.

Interface levels in flotation columns are generally measured with the aid of a pressure-sensitive Instrument, e.g. a differential-pressure cell. This paper criticizes the use of this type of measurement, and discusses other methods that are claimed to give more accurate measures of interface levels. The paper focuses on the development of methods based on the measurement of conductivity across the froth-slurry interface. These are often sabotaged by variations in the conductivity of the feed slurry, particularly when the pH of the slurry IS being controlled, e.g. In sulphide flotation. Methods of improving the accuracy and reliability of this technique are described. The result IS a robust, easy-to maintain level-control scheme that successfully rejects large disturbances in plant operation (including a 5:1 change in slurry conductivity) while controlling levels to an accuracy of I 4 cm.

This paper describes briefly a computerised model of the South African electricity system which has been developed jointly by the Atomic Energy Board and the Electricity Supply Commission. The results of an analysis of this system have been subjected to a fairly extensive sensitivity analysis which reveals that up to the year 1990 between 680 and 700 million tons of coal will be required for electric power generation, together with between 7 000 and 10 000 tons of uranium. This result is fairly insensitive to data variations, but the prediction of a cumulative requirement up to the year 2000, of between 1 300 and 1 800 million tons of coal and 25000 to 70000 tons of uranium, proves to be very data-sensitive.

Several aspects of the behaviour and properties of backfills consisting of cemented cyclone underflow tailings are illustrated by means of examples, and guidelines are given on the optimization of the performance of cemented fills. The stretch characteristics of the geofabric used to contain freshly placed backfill are described, as well as the relationship between these characteristics and the forces acting on retaining barricades. The properties required to achieve a self-supporting, stable free face in cemented backfill are explored, and a graphic relationship between stable height and shear strength is presented and compared with that for uncemented (classified) tailings. After a description of the characteristics of Witwatersrand quartzite gold-tailings backfill and commonly used cements, the process of drainage and air entry into backfill is outlined. Following this, the early-age gain in strength and the shear-strength characteristics, as well as the compressibility characteristics of cemented backfill, are described. Two phenomena that are potentially damaging to cemented backfill are seismic effects (or blasting acceleration) and the closure that takes place during the curing of cement. Investigations show that neither of these phenomena is actually significantly deleterious to gold-tailings backfill: liquefaction does not Occur as a result of seismicity, and hydration of cemented fill is not significantly impeded by closure.

Introduction The introduction of teleremote systems to underground mining can provide a significant improvement in the performance of a mine when compared with conventional mining techniques. This paper presents the concepts of teleremote mining in a case study showing how the systems work and the competitive advantage autonomation of mining techniques will provide for underground metal mining operations into the future. This paper is divided into two sections: the Mining Automation Program and What is next? On January 1st 1996 Inco Limited, Tamrock Oy, DYNO Explosives Group and CANMET formed a consortium for the development of teleremote mining equipment called the ‘Mining Automation Program’ or MAP. This program included a five-year research and development agreement that combines the talents of the above organizations to create mining equipment and systems for autonomating mining. The projects are based on the communication system currently sold and marketed by Automated Mining Systems Limited. The main components of the program investigated the development of a positioning and navigation module, autonomated systems using teleremote techniques for development and stoping, and software systems to support the use of this equipment. The program included the establishment of a test mine, at Inco’s 175 Orebody near Copper Cliff North Mine. This facility was unique allowing collaboration of companies and research organizations inthe design and testing of techniques and equipment used to apply autonomation to mining. Since the inception of the project other research alliances have been added to enhance the program. These include the application of ground support (Meyco/ Master Builders), muck pile recognition, the broadening of telecommunications links (PRECARN Associates Inc.-MALTA project) and the collection and processing of drilling core through the automated diamond drilling project (J.K.S. Boyles). MAP began as an idea a number of years ago with the fundamental question ‘Can an ore-body be profitably mined through autonomation?’ The concept was to design mining equipment and systems that would allow the teleremote operation of a mine. Automation was only one componentof this much larger teleremote mining issue. To start with, it was essential to prove or disprove the feasibility of this concept. The fundamental requirements are: • Telecommunications • Positioning • Navigation • Equipment • Software • Electronics • Mining Engineering • Organization. Each of these had to be considered. Technically, the feasibility of the project hinged on the successful development of a high capacity communication network, an accurate underground positioning system, a navigation system and finally the electronics and software that could integrate these. Mining equipment that could perform all the mining functions was the next requirement, along with explosive supplies that could be delivered to the holes teleremotely. Whatever the systems developed, they must be able to work in both bulk and selective mining situations and in varying conditions within a mine. Finally, the organizational issues of a change from our current method of operation to teleremote mining had to be understood. After five years of research and development the answer to the question ‘Can an orebody be profitably mined using autonomation techniques?’ is YES! There are still hurdles to overcome, however, the basic premise has been proven. The development and production of underground tunnels and stopes has been done. There have been interesting outcomes in terms of reduced effort to accomplish mining and the total time to mine. Definitions •Automationis the process by which a machine or system is run continuously including the ability for the system to self-correct. •Autonomationis the same as automation except that the process does not self-correct. •Teleremote operation is the operation of mining equipment over a network from any location out of line-of-sight of the machine. •Equipment Automationis the addition of technology to a machine that allows for unmanned operation of a machine and thus enhances the productivity of the operator. For example, a guidance system that allows a load-haul-dump to drive by itself, thus freeing the operator for other tasks. •Teleremote mining describes a mine process that combines the use of teleremote operation (potentially with some automation), positioning and process engineering, monitoring and control. •Tamrock DataSoloTMis a computerized drilling rig as shown in Figure 1. •Tamrock DataMini™ is a computerized development drill rig used for drifting and construction tunneling as shown in Figure 2.•Tamrock Toro 450™ is a LHD (Figure 3).

Gold mining has been undertaken in South Africa for more than a century. A great proportion of that mining has been from the Witwatersrand Basin; a geological phenomenon that has few parallels throughout the world. It has produced some 47 000 tonnes of gold mainly from underground mines, many of which have been truly world class gold mines. The gold mines of the Witwatersrand Basin have dominated world gold production from their inception and their production has been one of the cornerstones of the development of South Africa as a whole. The mines have some very specific characteristics; their sheer size, the depth of extraction, the nature of the orebodies, and their labour-intensive methods. The mines have also been part of the Mining House concept-a concept unique to South Africa. South African production has declined from a maximum of 1000 tonnes in 1970 to 470 tonnes in 1997. This, as a percentage of western world production, has declined from a maximum of 79 per cent (in 1970) to 21 per cent of world production (in 1997). The nineties' have seen South Africa and its mining companies move onto the world stage and face the harsh realities of having to compete in all spheres of business with their aggressive counterparts principally in Australia, Canada and the USA. The fight is for investment funds with the owners looking for the best returns on their money. In his address Roger Dixon will examine the current situation in the gold mining industry and examine the competitiveness of the mines of the Witwatersrand Basin compared with their peers worldwide. He will also discuss some of the fundamental challenges facing South African gold mines in the areas of legislation, technology, industrial relations, and health and safety. The environment in which the mines operate has changed radically in recent years and their ability to respond to these challenges will determine their future existence.

The mathematical models of semivariograms can be classified according to whether or not they correspond to situations where the second order stationarity conditions are satisfied (§ 3.3.4). If second order stationarity exists, the a priori variance s2 of x (z) also exists and is finite. For large distances h such that x (z) and x (z + h) are not correlated, the semi- variogram ? (h) will reach a value equal to s2 [this is a consequence of (3.27) above]. This limiting value is called the sill C of the semivariogram, and the distance at which ? (h) reaches the sill is called the range. The range of the semi- variogram obtained from a given type of sample corresponds to the distance of influence of these samples. If only the intrinsic hypothesis is satisfied, the sample variance is an increasing function of the size of the area or volume in which the samples are located, and the semivariogram ? (h) will be a continuously increasing function of h. Remark: It will be shown in Chapter 7 that the variance s2 of x (z) in the ore body O is equal to the average value of ? (h) in O. If ? (h) is a non-decreasing function with sill C, the average value of ? (h) in O will be less than C. s2 and C will be equal only if for some values of h in O, ? (h) exceeds C. In practice, if the range of the semivariogram is small with respect to the dimensions of the ore body, the difference between C and s2 will be negligible.

It is well known that the ability to influence project value reduces significantly as planning progresses and decisions regarding project parameters are made. However, at the prefeasibility stage in particular, where one of the main aims should be to evaluate a wide range of options in order to select the best for more detailed further study, there is often a reluctance to spend the time and money needed to do this rigorously. This paper demonstrates, by a number of case study examples, how significant increases in value may be obtained by fully evaluating the combinations of alternatives for various project design parameters, including (though not limited to) mining methods, haulage methods, mining rates, processing methods and rates, sequencing of mining, and cut-off grades, with changes and upgrades over time where applicable. The additional value unlocked is typically orders of magnitude greater than the additional cost of the more comprehensive study. The dangers of misuse of simplistic sensitivity analyses and failure to identify how strategies might change in response to changes in external factors are also illustrated, and the importance of selecting the best `grade descriptor' is discussed.

If one is to discuss sensibly and beneficially the whole spectrum of education, training, and employment of engineers, it is not possible to confine oneself to Professional Engineers because the profession of engineering embraces also technologists, technicians, and those people known in South Africa as certificated engineers. It would therefore be imprudent if this seminar were to be limited to certain sectors of the profession and industry. I hope that it will review the full situation from top to bottom and from side to side. New President of FAPA Mr Douglas H. Mills took office as President of the Federation of Societies of Professional Engineers on 1st July, 1985.
