Approximately 20% of current world copper cathode output is produced using a hydrometallurgical process route, generally referred to as the leach–solvent extraction–electrowinning flowsheet. Since its commercialization in the late 1960s, steady improvements in the performance and efficiency of the solvent-extraction reagents and equipment, combined with significant developments in leaching and electrowinning, have made an ever-widening range of ore types amenable to this technology. Following successful implementation on all major continents, a large proportion of growth in recent years derives from the re-emergence of copper solvent extraction in the Central African Copperbelt. This review provides a brief history of the development and evolution of copper solvent extractants and mixer-settler contactors, and the significance of the Copperbelt region in achieving commercialization and acceptance of the technology. The opportunities and challenges presented by the abundant high-grade oxide ores of the Copperbelt are contrasted with the processing of solutions derived from the low-grade mixed oxide–sulfide ore bodies that are prevalent in other geological regions. The current status of hydrometallurgical copper production in the African Copperbelt, within a global context, and a medium-term outlook for the technology are discussed.

Thus, the review is based to a great extent on how easily the information presented can be assimilated and understood, and how the book's format and content facilitate this. The meeting, organized jointly by The Institution of Mining and Metallurgy (London) and the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Morocco, was held in Rabat from 14th to 17th April, 1985, and generated considerable international interest. Exploration cam¬paigns and case studies of successful discoveries in the desert areas of more than 14 lands are described. The BCL furnace is scheduled to restart operations after being placed on care and maintenance in 2016 due to depressed nickel prices. The decision to start operations after such a stoppage ought to be led by a techno-economic evaluation of process options to make operations more resilient. For BCL, the decision lies between using the existing flash-smelting furnace (FSF) or a top-submerged lance (TSL) furnace. Available studies show that the FSF combined with other converting technologies is cheaper to operate; however, such studies are based on flowsheet simulation results of single copper concentrates and therefore do not provide a full scope of practical capabilities based on smelter operator skills. Using a t-test on normalized prior operational data from three Cu FSF and two Cu TSL, it was found that the only statistical differences between the operating costs of the FSF and TSL technologies are in the coal use for heating the feed blow and number of rebuilds: the FSF consumes coal to heat the feed blow and the TSL requires 2.4 rebuilds during a course of a single FSF campaign. A summative operating cost comparison over the existing BCL FSF 11-year life shows that BCL can decrease operational costs by some BWP 55.5 million if the operation were to change to the newer TSL technology. The savings derive from reduced coal use, which is normally associated with heating the blow when using the FSF. Despite the TSL carrying added costs of 2.4 rebuilds during a life time of one FSF furnace campaign, the cost associated with the TSL rebuilds of approximately BWP 1.3 million is minimal compared with the overall operational expenditure decrease that BCL will incur on using the TSL technology. In terms of the technology, BCL can have higher Ni–Cu recoveries at lower operational costs by elimination of Ni–Cu losses and eliminating the slag-cleaning furnace by converting to a TSL furnace.

Occupational noise-induced hearing loss (ONIHL) is associated with various risk factors in South African mines. We investigated the association between standard threshold shifts (STSs) and exposure to noise and platinum mine dust (PMD), using demographic data, five years of annual audiometry screening results, and noise and dust exposure data. Miners’ age, sex, percentage hearing loss (PLH), and dust and noise exposure data were gathered, and a linear mixed effects regression model used to predict STS. Average occupational exposure levels to noise and dust were calculated from recorded measurements. A total of 12 692 records were analysed. Most miners were male (89.6%) and more than 50% were younger than 41 years. More than 70% were exposed to > 85 dBA noise and 58% were exposed to 1.5–2.99 mg/m3 PMD. Changes in hearing levels ranged from 8.3 dBHL at baseline (2014/2015) to 10 dBHL in 2016 (STS), with no changes thereafter. The model showed that the estimated effect on STS for males was 27% and 21% higher than for females, for the left and right ear, respectively The estimated effect of age, PLH, noise exposure and years of exposure on STS was < 10% for each variable. There was no statistically significant association between PMD and STS. The combined effects of age, sex, years of exposure to noise, and noise exposure levels, and strength of associations can be used to predict STS for this group of miners. Our findings may be used to measure the efficacy of the mine’s hearing conservation programme.

Today’s mining operations require fast reporting and rapid rescheduling based on updated information. An automatic mine scheduling system could not only quickly reschedule but also propose alternative solutions. To avoid the financial and physical risks associated with testing such a system directly in operation, it could be first evaluated via discrete event simulation models. This would offer a safe environment to evaluate different operating rules and algorithms. In this study, this is achieved by integrating automatic scheduling software with a discrete event simulation model.

"BASF Mining Solutions have developed a new generation of copper solvent-extraction reagents that offer significant benefits over the existing reagents available to the industry today. Initial laboratory studies and pilot-plant trials have shown that these new reagents offer the benefits of a dramatic increase in resistance to degradation and are nitration-proof. This paper details a recent pilot-plant campaign at a commercial solvent-extraction plant. The main focus was to evaluate the copper/iron selectivity, copper recovery and net transfer of the new reagent compared with the conventional oxime reagents. The new reagent displays similar copper recovery and net transfer capabilities from typical agitation leach solutions. The pilot-plant results show a step change improvement in copper/iron selectivity in comparison with the existing modified and non-modified hydroxyoxime reagents used on the commercial plant. INTRODUCTION Copper solvent extraction (SX) from an acidic aqueous solution is typically accomplished using a hydroxyoxime extractant (Jergensen, 1999; Kordosky, 2000; Szymanowski, 1993). There are three hydroxyoximes from which all standard formulations are derived: 5-nonyl salicylaldoxime (NSAO), 5-dodecyl salicylaldoxime (DSAO) and 2-hydroxy-5-nonyl acetophenone oxime (HNAO). In the case of NSAO, it is necessary to use equilibrium modifiers in order to increase the copper stripped from the extractant (Kordosky & Virnig, 2003). Blends of DSAO, NSAO and HNAO are used to cover a wide spectrum of conditions (Kordosky, 2008). Use of modified aldoximes and reagent blends over the last 30 years has influenced the way copper producers and equipment manufacturers have approached the operation of copper plants. Existing solvent-extraction reagents cater for typical pregnant leach solutions (PLS) of copper mining systems which do not have significant effects on the reagent. Table I illustrates the range of copper concentration, pH values, temperature and iron concentrations for different leaching operations. As conditions become increasingly aggressive (i.e., higher PLS temperatures in primary sulfide leach or high iron content), current reagents become less capable of functioning according to expectations. One example is the effect of high iron (Fe3+) concentration in PLS and operating SX to achieve high copper recoveries. The ferric is partially chemically extracted and is transferred to elctrowinning (EW) during the stripping stage. To avoid a build-up of iron in electrolyte, which negatively affects current efficiency, a bleed of electrolyte is required. This bleed leads to excessive consumption of reagents, such as cobalt added to the EW process, and thus increases operational cost."
