During the early part of World War II , it appeared likely that supplies of chromite for United States industry might become critically short . As a part of the ensuing search for new sources of domestic chromite supply , the chromite - bearing black sands along the coast of southern Oregon were hurriedly investigated by State and federal agencies and by private interests , These investigations led to a decision to begin exploitation of the deposits immediately . A government stock- piling program was put into effect , a concentrator was financed by the Defense Plant Corporation , two privately controlled companies were encouraged to start mining operations , and the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey were authorized to search. for additional reserves of minable ore .

This report describes the development of guidelines for design, inspection and maintenance of automatic couplers. In order to devise the guidelines, performance requirements for automatic couplers were carefully established. This was done through a comprehensive survey of coupler manufacturers and extensive observation of automatic couplers in service in a broad spectrum of mines. The capability of the couplers to withstand the demands of the mining environment in terms of strength characteristics, gathering range, curve negotiability, and other factors were all carefully evaluated. An analysis of coupler related accidents for the years 1972-1976 was carried out to provide information on the safety and reliability of existing automatic couplers. This formed an important input to the development of the guidelines. It is expected that these guidelines will be useful to coupler manufacturers for establishing designs for improved automatic couplers, and to mine operators for maintaining their couplers in a safe and good operating condition throughout their expected lifetime. The Bureau of Mines for a number of years has been conducting an investigation of crude petroleum from producing fields in the United States and the Western Hemisphere and has published a series of reports on these fields. Analyses of crude-oil samples from many oil fields of Oklahoma are given in Bulletin 2913. Analyses of 21 representative crude oils from various producing zones of the Oklahoma City field are given in this report. A close study of the analyses reveals very few differences in the general characteristics and chemical properties of these oils.

Respirable dust provisions of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 are designed to protect the most important resource of the coal mining industry--its workers. The Act imposes two respirable dust standards of 3.0 milligrams per cubic meter of air after June 30, 1970; and 2.0 milligrams per cubic meter of air after December 30, 1972. Under Federal regulations, each operator is required to carry out a dust sampling program established by the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare, This program features the sampling of "high risk" face workers to establish that the exposure of each miner is below the dust standard, Mining sect ions, continuously in compliance with the regulations, may sample at less frequent intervals. In addition to requiring the mining company to take respirable dust samples, the Bureau of Mines will perform in-depth dust inspections twice a year, as well as frequent "spot inspections." The Bureau has established a semiautomatic computerized operation capable of processing over 1 million samples per year. This facility will be linked to various Bureau offices by a telecommunications system to provide automatic data printouts within hours after samples have been weighed.

The Experimental Coal Mine of the Bureau of Mines has served principally as a valuable and unique testing laboratory for studies of the explosibility of coal dust and mine gas; studies of the numerous complex and interrelated chemical and physical factors that govern the ignition of coal dust and the propagation of mine explosions; and studies designed to develop measures for preventing explosions or reducing their destructive effects. These researches, coupled with educational efforts by the Bureau of Mines and enlightened safety consciousness in the mining industry, had fruitful results. This is evidenced by the remarkable reduction in the frequency of major coal-mine explosions and the number of fatalities from explosions since the Bureau of Mines was established. Despite this progress, further important unresolved problems arise; these are due in part to changes in mining conditions and methods, which have brought about increased production of fine coal dust in highly mechanized operations. To solve the new problems, research must be continued without interruption. The results of many very recent and current studies in the Experimental Coal Mine are summarized briefly, and pertinent studies by European mine-safety-research organizations are listed.

A gravimetric method for the determination of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, methane, and oxygen in blast furnace top gas is described. Nitrogen may be determined directly by volume measurement or by difference. The method is direct, permits continuous as sampling, and provides an averaged analysis over a selected range of sampling intervals from 1/2 to 24 hr or more. Neither expensive equipment nor specialized personnel are required. The method is suitable for routine analysis, and the results compare favorably with those obtained by established methods.

During investigations of the occurrence of manganese in the western United States in the early 1940?s, examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples from seven claims and mines in southern Arizona. For convenience in reporting the results, the work on the properties is grouped in three districts. As the ores were too low grade to be acceptable to producers of ferromanganese, beneficiation studies were made to determine the amenability of the ores to concentration. The San Fernando group is about 10.5 miles south of Patagonia in the Harshaw mining district. G. T. Humphries and D. Alonso held an option on the property, which was owned by H. Bender. Two samples were taken; 1 was a picked sample and the other a representative sample of ore as exposed in the mine.

With the surrender of the Japanese Imperial Government as a climax to the capitulation of the German High Command , the main objective of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Division pivoted from war assignments to its main normal functions . One of these functions is to give wide public distribution to valuable technical facts which the Division has obtained through research on petroleum , natural gas , helium , and related subjects . During the war years many engineering data and scientific facts could be released only on a restricted basis as reports to war agencies and others immediately concerned . Moreover , many of the wartime reports contained masses of detailed data that were prepared under stress to meet emergency schedules . For peacetime publication and application , these data must be reviewed , correlated , and rearranged so as to present the essentials in proper form . To illustrate , a wartime report of 50 pages might be resolved into one curve in a composite graph for a peacetime publication . Another factor affecting the orientation of the work of the Division is the broader horizon of research revealed by its war activities . Fundamental research and careful engineering analyses are just as important in time of peace as in time of war; in fact , they should be more important to the forward view , because under peace conditions disrupting influences that distract from the orderly acquisition of knowledge are minimized . Therefore , the concerted effort has been not to " salvage " the results of the war activities , but to evaluate them on the basis of their relative importance in the future economy of the country . Where wartime investigations have pointed to peacetime accomplishments , the effort has been to give the corresponding type of work additional emphasis . This adjustment can not be made hurriedly , but many of the necessary preliminary steps on the new course have been taken ..

"Accidents at coal mines in the United States in September 1926 resulted in the loss of 170 lives, according to information furnished to the Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, by State mine inspectors. Of this number 125 occurred at bituminous mines and 45 in the anthracite field. As the bituminous output of coal for September was 48,976,000 tons, and the production of anthracite was 8,444,000 tons, the fatalities reported represented a death rate of 2.55 per million tons for bituminous mines and 5.33 for anthracite mines. The industry as a whole showed a fatality rate of 2.6 per million tons of coal produced in September 1925 the rate for bituminous coal mines was 3.29; the anthracite mines were idle in September last year due to a strike.During the first nine months of the present year 1,759 men have been killed by accidents at the coal mines throughout the United States, resulting in a death rate, per million tons of coal produced, of 3.76 as compared with 3.95 for the same period in 1925. Reports for bituminous mines alone showed a nine-month fatality rate of 3.53 which was about the same as the corresponding rate from January to September in 1925. The anthracite rate for the present year, however, shows a decrease of about 17 per cent; that is, the rate has declined from 6.36 to 5.28.Records covering the first nine months of 1926 show that 12 ""major"" disasters, that is, disasters in which five or more men were killed at one time, have resulted in the loss of 271 lives as against 10 disasters and 199 deaths in the corresponding months in 1925. The fatality rates for these disaster: alone were 0.579 and 0.465, respectively. One major explosion occurred at Tahona, Oklahoma, on September 3, 1926, in which 16 men lost their lives.An analysis of the principal causes of the 1,759 fatalities for the first nine months of the present year shows a reduction in the death rate as a whole and for falls of roof and coal and for explosives, but an increase in haulage, gas and dust explosions, and electricity. The Bureau of Mines has investigated the recovery of alumina by hydrochloric acid leaching of calcined kaolinitic clay . Bench- scale studies indicated that horizontal belt filtration was a pprraaccttiiccaall method for separating the siliceous residue from aluminum chloride liquor generated in the leaching step . Miniplant -scale continuous testing was performed to evaluate the filter circuits and to compare filtration response of different calcined kaolin feed materials and of different agitatorbaffle designs in the leaching reactors . Soluble alumina recovery with a single filter ranged from 94 pct with minus 10 -mesh feed more than 96 pct with minus 35-mesh or misted feed . Process advantages were confirmed for the calcined misted kaolin feed material prepared by a Bureau-developed misting process . With two filters in series , an overall filtration rate of 100 lb solids /hr.ft - 2 of filter area was attained with a soluble alumina recovery of more than 99 pct . More than 99.5 pct alumina recovery was obtained with a thickener and a two - filter circuit for either the minus 35-mesh or the misted feed . Modifications in leaching reactor design made to decrease particle- toparticle attrition were successful and significantly increased filtration rates and decreased flocculant requirements .

This Bureau of Mines report describes the method of obtaining a strength index for rock drillability, particularly for percussion drills. The original Protodyakonov method has been slightly modified, essentially to eliminate uncertainties in the measurement of the volume of fines, and to avoid conjecture in selecting the representative value as the strength coefficient. A theoretical consideration of the relevant parameters in the method was extended from a comminution theory, and hence the meaningful value was obtained experimentally by plotting the ratio of the number of drops and the volume of fines against the number of drops. The minimum ratio of the number of drops to the volume of fines in the plot was selected as the coefficient of rock strength. The modified method of obtaining the strength coefficient preserves the original Protodyakonov test apparatus and the merit of simplicity of the test procedure. The modified coefficient of rock strength shows its usefulness in predicting penetration rates with greater reliability than other mechanical properties. Consequently, the drillability curves were drawn using the modified coefficient of rock strength as the parameter for penetration rate prediction in the field.

"INTRODUCTION )ne of the most important wartime activities of the Bureau of Mines was the search for new sources of minerals necessary to the prosecution of the war. As a part of the investigation of strategic mineral deposits in the United States under the Strategic Minerals Act (Public 117, 76th Cong., 1st Sess., Ch. 190), examining engineers of the Bureau of Mines investigated and sampled various deposits of chrome ore in California, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington, and those deposits that warranted further study were explored by diamond drilling, trenching, and drifting, as re¬quired. During these investigations, samples were submitted to the Ore Dressing Section of the Salt Lake City Station for metallurgical testing. This paper gives data summarizing results obtained from laboratory ore-dressing studies of the chrome ores submitted.Although the deposits range widely in geographical location, the mineral occurrence of all of them is strikingly similar. Chromium, in all of the ores tested, is present as impure chromite or chromium spinel. Although pure chromite (FeCr204 or FeO.Cr203) contains 68 percent chromic oxide, the iron may be replaced in varying amounts of magnesium, and the chromium may be replaced similarly by aluminum and ferric iron. In studying concentration methods as applied to chrome ores, the composition of the chrome mineral is of fundamental importance, because it is manifestly impossible to produce a high-chrome concentrate from a low-chrome chromite by any mechanical process.In all but one of the ores, the gangue material consists of olivine or altered olivine minerals such as serpentine, antigorite, and chrysotile. The exception, the Antelope or from Montana, has a gangue chiefly composed of actinolite, chlorite, and talc."

The method for determining the effective porosity of oil- and gas-bearing sands described in this report is a development of earlier methods (28)3/ devised by the Bureau of Mines. The apparatus bas been improved and made more convenient to use, but the procedure is essentially the same as that which has been in use for maw years. A tabulation at the end of the report gives the results of more than 4,800 porosity determinations for oil sands4/ in the fields of 13 States, A selected bibliography of references to articles containing descriptions and evaluations of various methods of' determining porosity is included in this report. The method was devised and developed at the Petroleum Experiment Station at Bartlesville, Okla., as part of the Bureau's research on fluid-energy relationships and on methods of improving the recovery of crude oil from underground reservoirs.

Evaluation of incinerated sewage sludge as a secondary resource for aluminum, phosphorus, and minor constituents such as copper and zinc was initiated as part of the Bureau of Mines secondary resource program. The elemental composition of sludge ash for 14 plants in 11 U.S. cities was determined. Comparing industrialized cities with cities where most of the sewage is domestic, significant differences in heavy metal content were noted. Various parameters were investigated affecting the extraction of metals and phosphorus from a typical industrial city sludge ash and from a Palo Alto, Calif., sludge ash with a high precious metal content. Three extraction-recovery procedures for metals and phosphorus using sulfuric acid leaching, ion exchange, and various precipitation techniques were investigated. The last procedure developed was a combination approach using a three-stage countercurrent sulfuric acid leach that recovered most of the economic values from the sludge ash and also removed the leachable fraction of elements of environmental concern.

This paper summarizes precent knowledge of the ignition qualities of pure hydrocarbons likely to be present in modern Diesel engine fuels, as shown by an extensive search of the technical literature. The report also discusses the possible significance of cetane number and hydrocarbon struc- ture. Cetane or cetene numbers, and other physical properties, are tabu- lated for about 100 hydrocarbons, and a bibliography is appended. In recent years the Diesel engine has enjoyed increasing popularity due to its dependability, inherent characteristics of fuel economy, and the fact that it operates on a fuel that hitherto has been available in comparatively large quantities at a low price. These qualities have en- abled the compression-ignition engine to compete very favorably with other types of prime movers in many fields and have led to predictions of fur- ther rapid expansion in the application of Diesel power. In a survey of the field of all petroleum fuels for combustion engines, Holaday et al (9) have predicted that by 1948 railroads will be using 10 times as much Diesel fuel as was used in 1939 and that over-all consumption will have doubled that of 1939. Other estimates of the yearly demand for Diesel fuels five years hence vary from 2,6 to 5 times the amount used in 1944. Into this picture has come the question of whether the greatly in- creased production to meet this estimated demand is compatible with the maintenance and possible improvement in quality of fuels necessary to satisfy future engines. Unfortunately perhaps for the Diesel engine, factors other than those of simple arithmetical multiplication must be considered. For example, the consumption of oil in central heating plants doubled from 1935 to 1943, and a further increase of 57 percent of the 1943 demand is expected by 1950. Jet propulsion has been developed to the stage where it is entirely practical for military aircraft. Catalytic cracking plants, many of which were constructed to meet the war- time accelerated demand for high-octane gasoline, are taking their place in the refining industry. All these developments, as well as the Diesel engine, require material of approximately the same boiling range. Virgin gas oils make excellent burner fuels, perform most satisfactorily in the gas-turbine units for aircraft according to present information, and are at a premium as catalytic cracking stock.

Studies were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine the influence of textural features on the beneficiation of phosphate minerals (pellets) from selected bed and composite samples representing different rock types of the Western Phosphoria Formation. The particle size of the samples was reduced by attrition grinding to minus 20-, 28-, or 48-mesh depending on ore grade and gangue matrix. Sizing of the ground material showed that the phosphate pellets would concentrate in the plus 200-, 270-, or 325-mesh size fractions sufficiently so that the phosphate content was above the 31.5 :cent P2O5 required for acidulation. The phosphate content of essentially pure phosphate pellets was shown to range from 33 to 39 percent P2O5. Microscopic identification of the particles in each size fraction showed that the phosphate was either in the pellet form and readily liberated or so intimately associated with the gangue matrix that size reduction necessary Co obtain liberation was impractical.

A method has been developed in the laboratory for successfully electro-refining titanium metal. Refining is accomplished in e fused-salt electrolyte using offgrade metal as the anode and collecting the purified metal at the cathode. The characteristics and requirements of the various alkali chlorides tested as electrolytes are discussed in relation to relative ease of purification and serviceability. The various types of cells designed and tested for electrorefining are illustrated and their method of operation discussed. The individual advantage of each cell and the purpose for which it was designed are reviewed. The magnitude of the cathode current density was found to depend largely upon the quantity of soluble titanium chloride in the electrolyte. The physical condition of the anode also greatly affected the cathode current density.

The Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the El Paso Natural Gas Co. investigated the effect of high temperature and pressure at short residence times on the hydrogenation of a New Mexico coal to gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons . The study was made in a bench - scale semicontinuous unit at pressures of 500 to 6,000 psig , 480 ° to 1,000 ° C , and residence times of less than 1 minute to 15 minutes . Ammonium heptamolybdate was impregnated on the coal to furnish 1 percent molybdenum based on maf coal . Coal could be rapidly hydrogenated at elevated temperatures and pressures to yield large quantities of gaseous hydrocarbons and small quantities of lowboiling oils , high in single - ring aromatics . At 800 ° C and 6,000 psig and a residence time of 1 minute , the yield of hydrocarbon gas was 43 percent and of liquid hydrocarbons 9 percent , based on maf coal . With a 15 - minute residence time , the yield of gaseous hydrocarbons increased to 68 percent with a decrease in yield of oil to 6 percent . At higher hydrogen velocities , the yields of oil were much greater but contained large quantities of asphaltene . Low concentrations of molybdenum (0.01 and 0.1 percent ) or a high concentration of iron ( 1 percent ) were ineffective at 800 ° C , 6,000 psig , and short residence time .

The consumption of slab zinc in the United States increased sevenfold in less than a half century since 1900. Therein is reflected the innate characteristics of this versatile and nearly indispensable nonferrous metal whose use has grown at more than twice the rate of industrial production. The total metal consumption was substantially stimulated during the two World War periods, which were likewise marked by notable changes in use pattern accompanied by shifts in geographic distribution. This information circular summarizes basic data collected for many years by the Bureau of Mines, but in particular presents for the 1940-45 period details derived from the comprehensive slab zinc consumption survey inaugurated in 1940. The total consumption of slab zinc has been broken down into four major categories galvanizing, brass products, rolled zinc, and zinc-base alloys -- with minor applications grouped under a fifth heading, other uses. Ex- cept for the inclusion of zinc-base alloys with other uses before 1926, the above-named segregation has been shown for the entire period 1900-45. 11- though a substantial tonnage was taken by all groups in all years, there were large shifts in the use pattern in both World War periods. In both, the Allied Powers depended heavily on the United States for zinc-bearing products, especially those required by war industrius. The departures from usual uses were, however, much more marked during the second than in the first period, mainly because the United States could not have met the tro- mendously expanded war-materiel demands had the greater slab zinc needs of a period of high industrial activity been supplied. The geography of consumption is known in detail only for 1940-45. Even in that short period, substantial shifts are observable, largely the reaction from conversion to war production in 1940-41 and reconversion to peacetime consumption in 1945. However, there is so evidence of other shifts in consumption centers that appear to reflect longer-term develop- ments.
