This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 390 natural gas samples from 22 States and five foreign countries. Of this total, 385 samples were collected during calendar year 1969. The remaining five analyses are of samples collected during previous years, but releases granting permission to publish the results were not received until 1969. All samples were collected as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Eleven previous publications have presented the results of 8,660 gas analyses made by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1969. Although the Bureau of Mines has thus far made no large-scale experiments with oil shales, and the feasibility of the commercial manufacture of shale-oil products suited to present market requirements has not been demonstrated, there is ample reason to believe that these products will eventually supplement the more commonly used petroleum products and give equally good service. In 1919 the bureau, in cooperation with the Department of Metallurgical Research, University of Utah, began investigating the oil shales of the United States to obtain detailed information on their value. The States of Colorado and Indiana also cooperated through their State universities, in which research laboratories were organized to assist in carrying on the oil-shale studies planned and directed by the bureau. As a result of these studies much information is now available concerning laboratory methods of producing the greatest yields of the best products from oil shale. In order to study the principles that govern the retorting of oil shales and to test the oils produced, it has been necessary to develop and standardize reliable apparatus and methods for distilling shale, and to adapt to the testing of shale oils some of the methods the Bureau of Mines uses for testing petroleum. The methods employed by the Scottish shale-oil manufacturers were also studied, but most of them have been superseded by those described in this bulletin, which give more comprehensive and accurate results and employ more convenient apparatus. This paper is presented, therefore, as a manual of apparatus and methods that the bureau has developed for work on oil shale and found satisfactory for routine tests and for research. Explanation and discussion of the principles underlying the methods of testing are included wherever necessary for a clearer understanding.

The monocarbide region of the ternary system U-C-O has been investigated at 1,700° C as the first phase of a more extensive study of a portion of the four-component system U-C-O-N. An area bounded by the following compositional limits in atomic percent was studied: U, 44 to 55; C, 30 to 60; 0, 0.2 to 20. Compacts composed of mixtures of uranium, graphite, and uranium dioxide powders were sintered at 1,700° C under an equilibrium pressure of carbon monoxide to produce uranium oxycarbide specimens having a variety of compositions. Sintered specimens were evaluated by X-ray, chemical analysis, and ceramographic techniques. Solid-solution boundaries and phase relations have been established, and the effects of composition on the lattice parameter as well as the decomposition pressure have been investigated. Oxygen can be substituted for carbon in stoichiometric uranium monocarbide to the extent of about 17 atomic percent at 1,700° C. The composition range of the oxycarbide solid solution extends from about 48 to 51 atomic percent uranium in the low oxygen region. Above 10 atomic percent oxygen the composition range narrows to less than 1 atomic percent uranium. Carbon monoxide exists as a gaseous phase in equilibrium with all compositions which contain oxygen. Five separate phase fields were found bounding the solid-solution area. Other phases within this portion of the system include uranium, uranium dioxide, uranium dicarbide, and uranium sesquicarbide. Decomposition pressures of oxycarbide compositions at 1,700° C have been found to vary from a few microns for stoichiometric and uranium-rich compositions to 35 torr for carbon-oxygen-rich specimens. Lattice parameters were found to depend upon the U to C + 0 ratio as well upon the extent of substitution of oxygen into the stoichiometric monocarbide lattice.

Over 1500 literature citations related to diesel exhaust sampling and analysis were obtained as a result of both computer and manual searches of nine data bases. Abstracts and hard copies of relevant citations were reviewed and those considered appropriate for evaluation were included in a bibliography. Based on the literature collected, available sampling and analysis methods for the following diesel exhaust contaminants were evaluated: CO, CO2, NO, NO2, Hydrocarbons, Particulates, PNA, S04, Oxygenates Emphasis was given to both laboratory and field methods for these species. Methods were evaluated on the basis of sensitivity, selectivity, accuracy and reliability and a selected list of preferred methods was developed for each compound/ class. The selected methods were additionally evaluated through communication with current investigators. Sampling and analysis methods for all compounds except CO and CO2 were observed to have some unreliability. Recommendations were made for future research to develop, improve, and validate methods.

Within the past three years numerous inquiries for information on oil shale have been received by the Bureau of Manes. These inquiries have been increasing to such an extent that it has seemed advisable to issue a short paper prior to the publication of a bulletin on the subject, giving a, general discussion of the subject and a comprehensive list of references, so that those interested in the details of obtaining oil from shale can find additional information without much difficulty. Some of those who desire information are interested only in a general discussion of the subject, or are not in a position to refer to books and' articles describing the industry. The material for this paper is largely derived from published information on oil shale. Much of the information is obtained-from the books and articles mentioned in the list of references, and has been compiled with the intent of furnishing information to those not interested in all the details.

The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gras association, has been studying actively for the past several years the problem of the flow of natural gas through high-pressure transmission lines. Numerous data on gas flow through pipe lines under many conditions of operation have been obtained by carefully conducted tests, and these data, together with all other available information, have been analyzed carefully to secure practical facts for the use of operators in designing pipe lines and determining the effects of different operating conditions on pipe-line capacities. The first procedure in initiating; this problem was to review, compile, and analyze all of the existing data on the flow of natural gas through pipe lines. Actual data applicable to pipe and operating conditions normally used in the transmission of natural gas were meager, and the several pipe line flow formulas developed by different investigators gave widely varying; results when applied to problems of pipe-line design. Therefore, further experimental work under conditions comparable to those found in transmitting natural gas was essential before any definite recommendations could be made.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an experimental study of conditions needed to produce flames of pulverized coal when the heat needed for ignition is sup-plied only from the flame and hot furnace refractory. An electrically heated furnace which burned about 1 pound of coal per hour was designed and fabricated. A sheath of air, surrounding the primary coal and air stream, was used to prevent entry of hot gases from recirculating combustion products. Furnace temperatures needed for ignition ranged from about 1,8300 F for an Illinois coal to 2,250° F for a Beckley seam coal. Apparent flame velocities were about 2 to 5 feet per second, increasing with volatile content of the coal and with distance from the burner mouth to the flame. The time required for ignition, approximately 0.02 to 0.07 sec, was a better measure of flame behavior than was velocity.

THE INJURY DATA and experience at coke ovens in the United States for 1952 are presented in this bulletin under the following general sections: (A) General injury experience: Tables 1 to 9: Contain current and comparable data on operating statistics, number and classification of injuries, frequency rates, and accident agencies involved in causing injuries. Data are given for the industry as a whole, for each type of oven, and for the States in which coke is manufactured. (B) Selected injury experience: Tables 10 to 15: Contain comparable injury data in the coking industry covering 5- and 10-year periods on the number of injuries, accident agencies, and severity of injuries. (C) Historic injury experience: Tables 16 to 19: Contain data on the number of injuries, frequency rates, and employment at coke ovens from the earliest records through 1952, Operating statistics from 1929 through 1952 are given in table 19.

Many of the existing thermodynamic values for the titanium halides are estimates, including all the entropies and high-temperature heat contents of their crystalline and liquid phases. This report contains the results of low-temperature heat capacity measurents (which lead to entropy values at 298.15° K,) and high-temperature heat-content measurements of four halides - trichloride, tribromide, tetrabromide, and tetraiodide. The new data are combined with selected heat-of-formation values at 298.15° K. to obtain improved values of the heats and free energies of formation of these halides at high temperatures, thus supplementing the previous data of Kelley and Mah.5/ ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This investigation was conducted under a cooperative arrangement between the Federal Bureau of Mines and the Department of the Navy, Office of Naval Research. The work was done by Bureau of Mines personnel using Bureau of Mines calorimetric equipment. The Office-of Naval Research supplied the supporting funds and arranged for procuring the samples of the titanium halides. Longwall mining in lower seam heights may necessitate the use of single-drum shearers to overcome size constraints associated with standard double-drum shearers. To avoid the operational problem of clearance in the tailgate entry with one single-drum shearer, two single-drum machines can be operated on the same face, with each shearer responsible for mining a predefined portion of the face. However, utilization of two shearers on the same face necessitates the positioning of one shearer operator and a jacksetter in the return air of the upwind shearer, thus complicating respirable dust control on the longwall. In an effort to evaluate the unique dust control problems associated with this type of mining, the U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted dust surveys on two multiple-machine longwall operations. Sampling was done to quantify major sources of respirable dust and to identify potential solutions to problem areas. Sampling results indicate that the cutting sequences utilized on multiple-machine faces may have to be designed to minimize dust exposure, as opposed to optimizing productivity or facilitating operational requirements. Also, state-of-the-art dust control techniques typically found on double-drum shearer longwalls must be employed to help minimize the exposure of all face personnel to traditional dust sources.

As recently as the late 1920's there Were few indications that a 15-million-dollar-a-year industry would ever grow out of the mineralogic curiosity vermiculite. Today, it is an important industrial commodity, used primarily as an insulating material and lightweight aggregate, but with a wide range of other applications. The quantity of crude vermiculite produced and used in the United States increased 14-fold in the 17 years between 1935 and 1951. The vermiculite minerals are of secondary origin, formed by hydrothermal alteration of an ultrabasic igneous rock, generally pyroxenite, or by alteration of phlogopite or biotite mica or possibly other similar minerals. According to different authorities, vermiculite may originate either by direct hydrothermel means, by the weathering of biotite or phlogopite, or by a combination of these two agencies. Vermiculites frequently occur at or near the contacts of an acid intrusive rock, especially a pegmatite dike, with a basic or ultrabasic country rock.

Behavior of hard-burned quicklime was compared with that of soft-burned quicklime in an oxygen converter utilizing oxygen blowing in a rotating cylindrical vessel, set at a 30° to 60° angle to the horizontal and operated at a predetermined speed of rotation. Four pairs of tests were made) each comparing hard lime with soft lime. Three of the pairs differed from one another in the quantity of lime employed) and the fourth differed in blowing time, All four pairs showed an increase in yield when soft lime was used. Three of the pairs revealed that the ratio of the oxygen consumed with soft lime to the oxygen consumed with hard lime was the same as the ratio of metal yield with soft lime to the metal yield with hard lime. The fourth pair contained an error and could not be included. Finally, a close inverse relation was found between the combined iron in the slag and the combined lime in the slag, which can be expressed by the equation pct Fe = 52.67 -0,906 (pct CaO).

The purpose of this investigation was to study the primary materials associated with the coal structure . Mass spectrometric techniques can be useful in studying the chemical structure of coal and various high- molecularweight materials derived from coal . Investigations of pyrolysis products and extracts of coal , and also whole coal , showed : 1. Aromatic hydrocarbons obtained by the vacuum pyrolysis of coal below 300 ° C possibly were sorbed material rather than decomposition products . 2 . 2 . Thirteen structural types having molecular weights from 78 to 400 were identified in pyridine extracts constituting one - quarter or more of the coal by weight . 3. Material extracted at room temperature with a methanol - benzene solvent and a vacuum pyrolysis condensate obtained at 450 ° C contain similar components . The extract and the condensate have approximately the same average molecular weights ( 200-300 ) . 4. Material extracted from coal at room temperature is altered even by mild thermal treatment . 5. Changes in various alkyl series occurring in thermally treated coal extracts can be followed quantitatively . 6. Similarities in the spectra of coal and graphite were indicated in an investigation using a mass spectrometer equipped with a spark source . Determinations on a coal - ash sample by this technique showed good agreement with data obtained by emission spectroscopy .

In the first paper of this series (R. 1. 4333) on the cooperative work with the Eagle-Pitcher Mining & Smelting Co., changes in the nature of the sinter feed were measured by corresponding changes in the retorting temperatures necessary to distill zinc at the best rates; the firing schedules summarized such changes. In this paper, third of the series, are noted same of the changes in practice that were brought about by the need to treat more fused, glassy, and "hard" sinter, as the operators qualify it. Losses of uncondensed zinc were increased by adding zinc-bearing materials from which? the zinc was readily distillable to hard sinter requiring higher-temperatures for zinc distillation. The rates of zinc distillation were increased by grinding the fuel finer; there were few benefits and loss of dust on grinding the sinter finer, unless the fine ?coal and fine sinter were brought into contact by pelletizing, and the pellets made but little dust.

METHODS for measuring relative permeability as a valid function of saturation were compared by the. Bureau of Mines, using core samples from representative oil-productive California formations, from the Bartlesville sand in Oklahoma, and from synthetic samples. Measurements for gas-oil systems were made by steady-state dynamic, unsteady-state displacement and two stationary-phase methods. Measurements for water-oil systems were made by the unsteady-state displacement method. As the ratio rather than individual relative permeabilities is measured by the last method, three methods for calculating individual relative permeabilites from their measured ratio were compared for gas-oil systems and two methods for water-oil systems. Errors arising from capillary discontinuities, such as the end effect and stabilized-zone flow, are discussed and evaluated; possible errors rocs arising from turbulant flow are also examined. The inapplicability of non-steady-state methods for water-oil systems that are not definitely oil-wet is discussed in detail. Measurements of relative permeability to both gas and oil can be made quickly and accurately by the steady-state dynamic method when rates of flow of the two phases are sufficient to minimize the capillary discontinuity at the outflow end of the sample. At such rates relative permeability-saturation measurements are essentially independent of the rate of flow. The steady-state method wits modified by a dispersion section at the inflow end of the sample acid designated tie dispersed-feed method.

SIGNIFICANT general developments took place in the Far East during 1964, with far-reaching repercussions on the mineral and industrial economies of individual countries and the region as a whole. Japan, during this, "the Year of the Open Door," ushered in the era of industrial maturity, greater independence in economic policy, and expanded technical assistance to less developed countries. Symbolic of its dynamic economic growth is the fact that Japan out-produced the Federal Republic of Germany in steel during 1964 to take over a third-ranking world position. Mainland China, recovering from the "Leap Forward" debacle, made significant gains in industrial output. Mainland Chinese trade with Japan was on the upswing, and discussions were held between the Chinese and the Soviets for possibly resuming Soviet aid in industrial and mineral development. Meanwhile, United States aid to Taiwan was being phased out because of progress achieved. Rapprochement between South Korea and Japan was imminent late in 1964, a factor which may well affect South Korean mineral development. The Indonesian-Malaysian confrontation created economic difficulties in both countries. The war in Viet-Nam seriously disrupted industrial activities, particularly in the south.

Since 1929, the Helium Activity of the Bureau of Mines has operated a helium-extraction plant at Amarillo, Tex. The natural gas that supplies this plant is obtained from the Cliffside geologic structure 12 miles to the northwest and over the years, has become known simply as "Cliffside gas," There is need for published data on the low-temperature phase equilibria of helium-bearing natural gases. To date, little information has been published on the equilibrium phase compositions, solution of helium in condensed natural gas, condensation characteristics, or equilibrium vaporization coefficients for methane, nitrogen, and helium in helium-containing systems. A windowed phase equilibrium apparatus (8)6 was used to obtain 105 equilibrium samples, representing 35 experimental conditions of condensed Cliffside gas at pressures of 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 p.s.i.a. and temperatures from 0° to -270° F. Data on equilibrium vapor-liquid composition for Cliffside gas are presented in both tabular and graphic form and are discussed in detail to show their relationship to certain criteria that must be met to effect an efficient separation of helium from natural gas by means of low-temperature processes. Facts about condensation characteristics and solution of helium in the liquid phases are included, The important relationship of these two factors in decreasing the percentage of total helium lost by solution in the liquid phase is discussed.

The Bureau of Mines obtained samples of oil - reservoir rock from wells in Ohio , Pennsylvania , and West Virginia as part of an investigation of the susceptibility of petroleum reservoirs to secondary - recovery techniques . Illustrations and tables showing the geographic and stratigraphic sequence of the cored reservoirs and 40 tables of detailed lithologic descriptions of the reservoirs are presented . Information relevant to geologic surroundings , oilfield history , coring and well logging operations , and reservoir core analyses are referenced throughout the report .

This paper is the second report of the results of the United States Bureau of Mines twenty-third semiannual survey of motor fuel marketed in the United States. The first paper, reporting data relating to gravity, vapor pressure, and distillation range of the samples, was published as Report of Investigations 31293. A third and concluding paper giving the results of other tests will be published as soon as these tests have been completed. The present paper deals with the data of the twenty-third semiannual survey presented in accordance with the revised specifications for United States Government motor gasoline. The sample numbers used are identical with those used in Report of Investigations 3129, with additional data included for copper strip corrosion (method 530.22).4 and sulphur content by the lamp method.5 Three hundred and twelve samples were collected and analyzed in this survey. Two hundred and seven samples were competitive-price gasolines and one hundred and five samples were premium-price motor fuels.6
