During the period 1979 thru 1982, Multi Mineral Corporation conducted a mining I research program at the United States Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Facility in the Central Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and, the results are described in this report.

"INTRODUCTION Mica is found in Georgia from the Fall Line in the central part of the State to the Valley and Ridge Province in the northwest. During the past 3 years, Georgia has been one of the chief producers of dielectric mica in the United States. Since January 1945, when prices were reduced, mining has decreased until practically no sheet mica is being recovered at present.The main mica-bearing regions in the State may be classified into three districts: The Thomaston district comprising Upson, Lamar, and Monroe Counties; the Ball Ground district, comprising Cherokee and Pickens Counties; and the Hartwell district, comprising Hart and Elbert Counties. There are numerous mines and prospects in all of these districts. All have been visited from time to time by engineers of the Bureau of Mines and by members of the Federal Geological Survey. The Federal Survey has made detailed maps and reports on all of the most important ones.This report will deal with five of these properties on which the Bureau of Mines has diamond-drilled.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Early in 1912, from information received by the Bureau of Mines, it became evident that quantities of valuable radium-bearing ore from Colorado were being exported for manufacture in foreign countries and that at least part of the manufactured product was being returned to this country and sold at a price entirely incommensurate with that received by the miner and the prospector. Consequently, in line with its efforts to increase efficiency in the mining and treatment of mineral resources, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of conditions. Results of this preliminary investigation were published, in the summer of 1913, as Bulletin 70,a which gave an outline of the radium deposits of the West, the conditions of mining, the wastes involved, and the status of the production of radium from its ores. At about this time newspapers and medical journals were publishing statements regarding the value of radium in cancer therapy. These reports, although many of them were exaggerated, brought out clearly the remarkable virtue of the gamma rays for the treatment of cancer and other malignant growths. In view of the fact that the largest known supplies of radium ore in the world are in the States of Colorado and Utah and on the public lands of the United States, it was deemed highly important for the Bureau of Mines to study the production of radium in detail. Such study, it was hoped, would enable the prospector and miner to obtain a fairer price for the ores and would furnish information necessary in case Congress appropriated funds to develop methods for extracting radium from ore on the public lands under Government supervision, to be supplied at cost to the hospitals of the Army, Navy, and Public Health Service.

For several years the Northwest Electrodevelopment Laboratory of the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Air Materiel Command, U. S. Air Force, has been studying zirconium alloys. A preliminary survey of these alloys has been completed and reported as a Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations. 4/ Originally the purpose was to determine the suitability of zirconium alloys in medium-temperature applications. However, data also were obtained on other properties of these alloys, and later the scope was broadened to include amore detailed investigation of a selected group. The zirconium-titanium system was one of those chosen. The Bureau of Mines has been instrumental in the commercial development of both of these metals and has constructed pilot plants for the production of titanium at Boulder City, Nev., and for zirconium at Albany, Oreg. Both elements are in subgroup A, fourth series of the periodic table, and therefore have many properties in common. Since both have similar atomic structures and lattice dimensions the possibility of extended mutual solubility seemed likely. Inc transition-point diagram of Fast indicated that the two metals are completely miscible in all proportions in both the alpha and beta forms.

This report describes work performed and results obtained for the technical and economic feasibility study of oil production by mining methods. The characteristics of oil fields which would make them amenable to mining techniques were identified. An inventory of known U.S. oil fields that offer this potential was collated. This was further divided into fields having potential for underground and surface mining systems development. Several candidate fields that fit particular underground and surface mining system types were then selected. Conceptual mining systems were designed for the selected fields. Five underground and four surface methods were chosen. Costs of oil production were estimated for these selections. The impact of oil mining an the environment was also considered.

The lack of comparable and accurate statistics of coal-mine accidents in the United States as a whole led the Bureau of Mines in 1911 to undertake the collection of such data. The importance of such statistics as a basis for remedial legislation can not be overestimated, moreover they serve to indicate the results of the efforts made by the Federal Government, State mining departments, and mine operators throughout the country to lessen the hazard of coal mining. The mining departments of the leading foreign coal-producing countries have long taken cognizance of the importance of such statistics. In Great Britain, official statistics of coal-mine accidents have been collected and published since 1851, in France since 1853, in Austria since 1875, in Germany since 1852, and in Belgium since 1831. The United States not only leads these countries in the production of coal but the output of its coal mines is greater than those of Great Britain, France, Belgium, Austria, India, Japan, and New South Wales combined. Accordingly, it is proper that there should be some official record of the accidents in this, the greatest mining industry not only in the United States but in the world. It is especially appropriate that this work should have been undertaken by the Bureau of Mines, as, through its investigations of mine accidents in the field, it is constantly in close touch with coalmining conditions throughout the country. Its engineers are not only able to obtain first-hand information as to a great many accidents, but, through their special training and experience, are able to appreciate the significance of the figures reported by the coal-mine operators, thus aiding an intelligent and uniform classification 01 the accidents for the country as a whole. Further, the State mining dnpartments and State mine inspectors of every State in the country having a system of coal-mine inspection are cooperating with the bureau by sending it monthly reports of accidents in the coal mines of their respective States. The receipt of such reports places the bureau in a most advantageous position to publish promptly statistics of these accidents. Although a few years ago accurate statistics of c~al-mine accidents in the United States as a whole were entirely lacking this bureau was able to pubjiish the 1912 statistics within three n:onths after the close of the year and long before corresponding statistics had been issued by the mining departments of the leading foreign coal-producing countries. The cooperative agreement with the State coal-mine inspectors has not only made possible the prompt publication of the statistics, but it has also enabled the bureau to classify the fatalities by months and according to cause, showing the months in which the greatest and the least number of men were killed and from what causessomething that has never before been accomplished for this country.

"INTRODUCTION Geological examination of the Iron Mountain beryllium deposits was begun by a field part 3/ of the Federal Geological Survey in May 1942. Later in that month the occurrence was examined by the author and C. H. Johnson, of the Bureau of Mines, and a preliminary exploratory program was outlined. Trenching and sampling began about June 15 and were completed in July 1942. A large tonnage of beryllium-bearing material was indicate by this preliminary survey, so that additional funds wore allotted for further trenching and sampling, underground exploratory work, and diamond drilling. This later program was initiated in July 1942 and was completed in May 1943. 4/ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilisation of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Epoxy and polyester-type resins were injected into coal-mine roof strata of the thick Freeport coal seam in Allegheny County, Pa., at test sites in roof that had been exposed several weeks, in newly exposed roof, and in strata over solid coal. Test results indicate that the method of strengthening bituminous-coal-mine roof by injecting a bonding material into the roof strata can be developed into a safe, efficient support system. If roof bonding will become a standardized method of roof support and reinforcement or if it can be effective when used with other types of roof support can be determined only by extensive experimentation in various coal beds. Observations and conclusions are shown at the end of this report.

This survey report, the first for this type of fuel, is issued to provide information on the characteristics of the burner-fuel oils now manufactured for sale. Reports of surveys of diesel fuel, conducted under a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines, United States Deportment of the Interior, have been published annually since 1950.2/ This survey of burner-fuel oils is similar to the diesel-fuel surveys In pattern and has been conducted under an extension of the same agreement at the request of the Oil-Heat Institute of America and the petroleum industry. It is not intended to conflict with the diesel-fuel survey but rather to supplement it. Burner-fuel oils, also specifically referred to as heating oil, range oil, furnace oil, "Bunker C," and fuel oil, are sold in increasing volumes for use in this country and for export. Sales of all grades of fuel oil in the United States have increased from 340 million barrels in 1926Y to over a billion barrels per year. 4/ Distillate fuel oil sales, in proportion to total fuel-oil volume sold, increased from 42 percent in 1950 to 50 percent in 1954. Sales of distillate and the heavier residual oils during recent years are shown: [ ] It must be realized that the data given are not accurate indications of the use of these materials as burner fuels. Some burner fuel, used as range oil, is kerosine, which is not included above. During the past year a special study was made of shrinkage stoping A large number of mines in the United States and Canada which employ this method were visited and their practices were discussed with the operating staffs. The operating data obtained are appended hereto. Data were also abstracted from the literature on other mines and are combined in tables with data personally secured by the author. References are made to these published articles, some of which have appeared as information circulars of the United States Bureau of Mines, in the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, and the Engineering and Mining Journal. Several of the mines referred to which have not been described in individual papers will be described in detail in information circulars to be issued by the bureau. Eventually it is planned to combine and condense the information in these circulars and present the data in bulletin form.

The Magruder and Chambers copper deposits in the Little River gold district, on the border line of Lincoln and Wilkes Counties, Georgia, have been known for a number of years (fig. 1). The Magruder deposit was first opened as a gold mine but has produced mostly copper and load. Records show that about 50 cars of concentrates were shipped from this property. No record of any production at the Chambers deposit is available. The Bureau of Mines, in its program of investigation of strategic minerals deposits, diamond drilled 10 holes, totaling 3,784 feet, on the two properties between December 3, 1948, and June 23, 1949. Eighty-eight core samples were analyzed, and the analyses and drill-hole data are presented in this report.

"Many of the iron ore deposits on the western end of the Mesabi Range Minnesota consist of the so-called ''wash ores."" Because of their high silica content these ores must be washed or concentrated to make them merchantable. Washing plants have been in operation for 20 years, during this period large quantities of tailings have accumulated in tailings ponds. These tailings contain the aggregate millions of tons of iron oxides which, if recovered, would greatly to the available tonnages and to the revenues of the mining companies. It the purpose of this paper to outline give results of concentration tests on tailings.In order that the reader may understand more clearly the type of material under consideration, a short description of the characteristics of the wash ores of the Western Mesabi Range and a brief resume a washing methods that have been are now being employed will be given. Appleby and Newton4 In their description of the district and of the ores say:The Western Mesabi district embraces the territory west of the town of Nashwauk in Itasca County. The territory to the east of this dividing line is known as the Central and Eastern Mesabi district. This subdivision is rot wholly arbitrary. While the ore bodies in the two districts resemble each other in. shape, size, and general structure, there is a marked and very important difference in the character of the respective ores. For purposes of comparison, the western deposits have been called washable ore bodies, and the central and eastern, standard ore bodies. The latter ores are the result of natural concentration processes which have teen carried far enough to produce a large proportion of high-grade ore Wet can be marketed direct; the Western Mesabi ores present a lesser degree of natural concentration and are as a rule of too low grade to admit of marketing without preliminary treatment. In many cases the grade can be improved by washing, hence the material is called washable ore. Exceptions to thin general rule may be noted in both districts. Many of the Western Mesabi ore bodies contain quite a proportion of merchantable ore. There are also portions of central and eastern Mesabi ore deposits which are of low grade and which can be improved by washing."

In the preparation of this paper each subject has been presented by the engineer in charge. L. R. Dobbs wrote the part pertaining to tae technique of square-set mining, J. M. Snow the part on geology, and M. D. Paine, the part on ventilation. All of the drawings are the work of H. W. Waterfield of the engineering department. The statistics of the Tintic district ware prepared by A. G. MacKenzie. Each writer has attempted to show the difficulties that arise in operating and the practices used to overcome them.

This report is the second of a series describing methods and systems of mechanical mining; where operations are conducted on more than one shift. The first report, Information Circular 7014,4/ describes mining operations at 14 mines and the present paper describes operations at 11 additional mines. The purpose of this study is to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the various types of equipment and mining systems now used where more than one shift is worked per day. Physical conditions vary in different and in the same mining districts and determine, together with economical considerations, the systems of mining and the types of mechanical loading equipment to be used. The information presented in this paper may be helpful to operators or others who may contemplate installing a mechanical mining system. The equipment used in the mines described comprises conveyors, scrapers, mobile loaders, mobile conveyors, and combination of these types. The description of the mining systems and practices at the mines investigated is detailed only as they relate to and affect mechanization. In computing the operating data in mines that are not totally mechanized, employees not working directly on production have been charged to output from mechanized sections in proportion to the percentage of mechanization. The operating data for comparing various systems are for an average working dry, as the number of men working on idle days varies greatly in different mines.

This report documents the research efforts that were undertaken to design, install and test noise abatement devices for use on off-highway haul trucks operating in surface mines. The objective of the program was to reduce the environmental noise from haul trucks. The noise reduction devices that were developed utilized existing technology and were tested on a 50-ton haul truck. The efforts emphasized the reduction of noise emitted from the engine compartment which included the use of side shields, sound absorbing material, improved radiator shroud design, and a modulating clutch fan. Noise tests were conducted using modified SAE test procedures for measuring sound levels around a stationary and moving machine, and inside of the operators compartment. Test results showed a maximum of 4 dB(A) reduction measured 16 feet from the truck. Interior cab noise was reduced 6 dB(A) with the windows and vents closed.

The Bureau of Mines analyzed 626 crude oils from 546 oilfields in the United States that produced 2,500 BOPD or more during at least 1 of the last 3 years. Included also are crude oil analyses from eight fields that produced less but which were located in areas having few or no fields that produced 2,500 BOPD. The tables show the geographical and geological source, general characteristics. and determined and computed analytical data for each sample. The analyses were made according to the Bureau of Mines routine method and are directly comparable to other previously published analyses.

Flotation tests are described on samples of two lowgrade nickeliferous ores of Oregon and Washington. The sample from the Congress mine, Ferry County, Wash., contained 1.2 percent Ni, occurring chiefly as millerite. The sample from the Shamrock mine, Jackson County, Oreg., contained 2.20 percent Ni and 0.78 percent Cu occurring chiefly as pentlandite, nickeliferous pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite. The millerite in the Congress ore was concentrated by flotatioin with aulfydric collectors in a series of locked tests to recover 73 percent of the nickel as a 7 percent bulk concentrate. By successively regrinding and floating the bulk concentrate, it was further concentrated to 12.4 percent Ni at a recovery of 59 percent and 21.8 percent Ni at a recovery of 50 percent. Attempts at selective concentration of the copper-nickel Shamrock ore were only partly successful because of the intimate association of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. The nickel concentrate, which contained 86 percent of the nickel, had an analysis of 4.42 percent Ni and 1.03 percent Cu. The copper concentrate had an analysis of 18.8 percent Cu and 1.96 percent Ni and contained 48.5 percent of the copper. A bulk sulfide concentrate contained 92 percent of the copper and 01 per¬cent of the nickel and had an analysis of 4.17 percent Ni and 1.63 percent Cu.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the geology and physical properties of core samples at the Sunnyside coal mine No. 1, Sunnyside, Utah, and was written in conjunction with the Single-Entry Program conducted at the mine. The objective of this program was to test the hypothesis that the single-entry system in the Sunnyside mine, supported in the center by open cribs and divided by a fire-resistant partition, is equivalent to or better than a two-entry sys-tem. Drill cores, taken underground at 15 sites in the single-entry study area, facilitated the construction of geologic cross sections of the entries. Physical property data obtained from the drill cores was used in a three-dimensional finite element analysis program to evaluate the stability of the openings, the support requirements, and the de formation characteristics of the roof and floor material. Data on 10 physical property parameters for 5 rock types plus coal are also tabulated and discussed.

Energies of combustion of vanadium nitride (VN) and vanadium carbide (VC) were measured. Correcting to vanadium tetroxide (V204) as the final state, the heats of combustion were ?H298.15=-118,700±100 cal/mole of vanadium nitride and ?H298.15=-240,270±360 cal/mole of vanadium carbide. With vanadium pentoxide (V205) as the final state, the heats of combustion were ?H298.15= -133.440±100 cal/mole of vanadium nitride and ?H298.15=-255,020±360 cal/mole of vanadium carbide. Combining these results with vanadium oxide data, the heats of formation obtained were ?298.15=-51,880±200 cal/mole of vanadium nitride and ?H298.15=-24,350±400 cal/mole of vanadium carbide. Heats and free energies of formation of vanadium nitride and carbide were calculated to 2,000° K.

[Several processes for recovering manganese from low-grade ores have been proposed3/4/5/ in which an aqueous slurry of the ore is leached with gas containing nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur dioxide as obtained from burning sulfur or roasting sulfide ores. The manganese dioxide is dissolved, and most of the sulfur dioxide is oxidized to sulfate, but an appreciable quantity of dithionate is usually formed, together with acid from oxidation of the sulfur dioxide. The over-all reactions may be represented as follows: (1) Mn02 + S02 = Mn++ + S04--. (2) Mn02 + 2S02 = Mn++ +S206--. (3) H20 + So2 + 1/2 02 = 2H+ 5S4--. (4) H20 + 2S02 + 1/2 02 = 2H+ + S206---.]
