This paper, describing the mining operations at Mount Isa Mines, is one of a series covering mining methods and costs being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Mount Isa property has been in operation since June 1931; during this period operations have changed from the production and treatment of carbonate ores to the mining, milling, and smelting of sulphide ores. This change involved revision of ore-extraction methods. Stoping methods have been designed to apply to parallel lodes ranging from 10 to over 100 feet in width and dipping at 50° to 60°. The hardness and strength of the ore and enclosing wall rocks, together with the strength and thickness of the country rock between lodes, have permitted the selection of a sublevel stoping method for mining the sulphide ores.

Man has been engaged in the construction of tunnels in. rock for several thousand years. During that time, methods of tunneling have changed drastically. Hordes of men chipping away at the tunnel face have been replaced by mechanical drills and explosives and by tunnel boring machines. Spoil is no longer carried on the backs of humans, but is now removed by trains, trucks or conveyor systems. These and other changes have had the effect of greatly increasing the rate of tunneling, while at the same time, greatly decreasing the potential dangers to workmen. Although the techniques, equipment and material used for tunneling are being continually improved, rock tunneling is still a slow and expensive process. Significant improvements and innovations are needed to reduce the cost and time required for tunneling if we are to fully utilize the subsurface to aid in the solution of urban problems and in the conservation of resources. This report is intended to facilitate the orderly development of tunneling technology by focusing attention on the inadequacies of rock tunneling and the improvements that are needed. The data presented were derived from the results of a comprehensive questionnaire that was completed during the summer of 1969 by more than 600 individuals and organizations in 17 countries. Table 1 lists the countries and the number of replies from each. Appendix A contains a summary profile of the national responses, while the text presents the results and a brief analysis of the conclusions that might be derived from the data in the questionnaire. The data shown in Appendix A represent the consensus opinion of each of the 17 nations without regard to the number of individual replies or the amount of tunneling activity that is represented. The national consensus was determined for each country by a plurality of the individual responses, in some cases modified by the opinion of the rapporteur. Tire above procedures can lead to situations which are misleading. For example, experience and activity arc a rational basis for analysis; but, if national replies are weighted on this basis (i.e., number of responses), informed and valuable opinion of less active countries would probably be overwhelmed and lost. In analysing the data on the basis of national responses without weighting, it becomes apparent that many of the same problems exist under a given set of conditions regardless of the number of tunnels that have been driven.

The objective of these projects is to provide an ordered and sequenced series of advances toward the Bureau's overall goal of providing the system technology required to create a healthier and safer working environment for the Nation's mining and minerals processing workers.

"INTRODUCTION During the course of the investigation of the occurrence of manganese deposits in the western United States, examining 'engineers of the Bureau of Mines collected samples from seven manganese properties in Grand and beery Counties, Utah. These were supplemented by five samples submitted by property owners. Since all of the ores were too low-grade for use in producing ferromanganese for steel manufacture, some means of beneficiation was required to produce marketable concentrates, and metallurgical studies were made on each of the samples.Most of the ores Investigated are similar in one respect: At least part of the 'manganese oxide areas contains minute inclusions of gangue. This occurrence materially enhances the complexity of the ore, partly by .increasing the complexity of mineral association, but largely through making manganese-quartz liberation more difficult. In such ores, there is a marked tendency for the manganese minerals to be retained as shells or coatings on the surfaces of quartz particles when crushed. Particles of this type represent considerable loss of manganese in tailing, if gravity-concentration methods are employed, or tend to' float, thus carrying an appreciable quantity of gangue into the concentrate, if treated by flotation.Plus 48-percent manganese sinters were made from some of the ores tested, but, in general, intimate association of manganese minerals with silica limited the degree of beneficiation attainable."

This report represents the first comprehensive accounting of lode mining sites in the Sheep Mountain mining district, Custer County, Idaho. Twenty-one mine and prospect locations have been added to the Bureau's Mineral Industry Location Subsystem (MILS) data base as a result of initial phases of a mineral appraisal of the River of No Return Wilderness; previously known locations were checked and the updated information added to the data base. The district's deposits are mainly confined to metasedimentary xenoliths in granodiorite and quartz monzonite. Those deposits in the north and west parts of the district are lead-silver-zinc replacement veins in dominantly calcareous facies; those in the southern part of the district are polymetallic fissure-veins containing pyrite, chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, galena, and sphalerite hosted by micaceous schist and phyllite. The dominant structural trend in the southern part of the district is northwesterly and on strike with major deposits in the adjacent Seafoam mining district.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Coouncil (CRC) 4/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 5/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. 5/ reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. 5/The present report presents analytical data for samples, representing the products of approximately 100 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during December 1)55 and January 194o. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. The number of samples, items, and brands comprising each group is as follows:Regular-price, 1,958 samples, 317 items, and 96 brands; premium-price, 1, samples, 292 items, and 85 brands; third-grade, 58 samples, 22 items, and 14 brands. Late in 1974 at a meeting with the Cedar Coal Company in Chelyan, West Virginia, a very definite requirement for an automatic heat sensing fire suppression system for the type coal augers used in their mine was revealed. Several fires had been experienced, and while equipment loss was a consideration, operator safety was also a concern. As of that date no one had developed an automatic system specifically for fire suppression on coal augers. II. EQUIPMENT DEVELOPMENT As a result of the above meeting, an unsolicited proposal was made to the Bureau on March 1, 1975, and a contract was issued to provide the following services: A. Determine and define fire hazard problem on Compton Coal Auger. B. Modify or otherwise mike a Lease "AFEX" system suitable for protecting the fire hazard area developed in paragraph "A". C. Make installation of "AFEX" system. D. Monitor installation for reliability for a period of 90 days after installation. C. ConJurt a simulated fire test to determine effectiveness on system.

On the night of June 8, 1917, the flame of a carbide lamp accidentally set fire to the uncovered and frayed insulation of an armored power cable near the 2,400-foot level of the North Butte Mining CO.'s Granite Mountain shaft. How this, insulation accidentally became exposed is explained on page 15. The highly flammable oiled fabric set fire to the shaft timbers, and as this is a downcast shaft the fire spread with great rapidity, soon filling the mine workings with smoke and gas. At the time 410 men were working underground, 247 of whom escaped by various means, but most of the 163 remaining were probably overcome soon after the fire started, and perished. Only two men were actually burned. The cause of the disaster was purely accidental. The immediate effect was the unexpected reversal of normal conditions; the ultimate effect was great loss of life and the destruction of the main hoisting shaft, putting it temporarily out of service. The work of rescue and fire fighting continued eight days. The following pages present an attempt to draw some practical conclusions and suggestions from this disaster. The property of the North Butte Mining Co. consists of about 220 acres in the northeastern part of the Butte district, Montana. Next to the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. it is the largest producer of the district. In 1916, the year before the disaster, there were 1,160 men employed. The output was 560,947 tons of ore, which yielded 24,498,181 pounds of copper, 1,047,063 ounces of silver, 1,712 ounces of gold, and 412,953 pounds of zinc. The profit was $2,479,595. The total development work for that year was 21,694 feet. During the first half of 1917, the year of the accident, the daily tonnage of ore averaged 2,000, an increase of 400 tons over that of the year 1916.

The Miranda Pine Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) study area (No. 5114) comprises 12,600 acres (5,100 ha) in Los Padres National Forest in Santa Barbara County, California, about 15 mi (24 km) east of Santa Maria (fig. 1). Mineral investigations are made by personnel from the U.S. Bureau of Mines on National Forest lands identified as Further Planning Areas in the RARE II program. The Bureau of Mines reviewed literature, mining claim records, and production files; examined the study area; and sampled mineral properties where appropriate.

Case 1: A driller raised a drill rig mast into a 7200-volt overhead power line. Both he and his helper were killed. Case 2: A driller-helper was pulling a winch cable toward a stack of drill steel when the cable contacted a 12,000-volt power line. The Bureau of Mines has participated in the American Petroleum Institute Research Project 48A (API-RP48A) program on the Separation and Identification of Sulfur Compounds in Crude Petroleum. The lack of reference compounds or infrared spectral data has made difficult the identification of individual sulfur compounds boiling above 140° C. The recent acquisition of 24 alkylthiophnnes has made possible a limited study of this important class of sulfur compounds. The infrared spectra of 2-monoalkylthiophenes and 2,5-dialkylthiophenes for the 2 to 15p range are reported. Correlations for determining the 2-alkyl and 2,5-dialkyl substituted thiophenes are derived from this information. The 2-alkylthiophenes show a unique pattern in the 5.50 to 6.54 region, while the 2,5-dialkylthiophenes show a distinctive pattern in the 5.6µ to 6.7µ region. A skeletal vibration occurs in the 9.5 to 10.0µ region for all of the thiophenes investigated. These data will aid the infrared spectroscopist in the identification of compounds of the type reported.

Longwall mining of thin shallow coal seams utilizing open pits is technically feasible. The thinnest coal seam which can be mined using available technology is 34 inches. The capital expenditure for a 1,000,000 ton per year operation is $15,494,000, and the projected rate of return is 5 percent. Similar statistics for a conventional area surface mine are S18,937,000 capital and 14 percent rate of return. The longwall surface mining method disturbs 63 acres of land per 1,000,000 tons, and the conventional area surface mine disturbs 198 acres A significant bibliography of the technology involved is included.

United States newspapers of 25 or 30 Years ago ran headlines every few weeks telling of some mine disaster. Each disaster was a first-page attraction for a day or so then was forgotten until the next sensational event, frequently another mine disaster, a few weeks later. Interspersed with the large mine disasters were the so-called ?snipping? mine accidents that caused the death of one or two mine workers. The summation of mine fatalities of all types usually exceeded 3,000 a year, and nonfatal accidents to workers in mines of the country approximated 250,000 annually. From 1906 to 1910, inclusive, there were 84 major explosion disasters (about 17 per year) in. United States coal mines. The resulting fatalities totaled 2,388 for the 5-Year period. These frightful catastrophes helped the number of fatalities in coal mines of the country to reach the enormous total of 13,288 for the 5 years, or an average of 2,658 per year.

A comprehensive survey of mine seismicity and rock bursting during development of two sublevels at the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID, USA, was conducted to better define rock failure mechanisms and sources of ground control hazards. Survey data included rock burst damage reports, seismic event locations and magnitudes and, for the most energetic events, first-motion information. Several subsets of this database, including large seismic events, rock bursts, and microseismic activity near the face, were analyzed. Elements of the large-event and rock burst data sets were nearly independent. That is, there was no relationship between the risk posed by a seismic event and its energy, although such a relationship is well established for the mine as a whole. All data sets showed that certain geologic features appear to control the spatial distribution of events and the spatial distribution of rock burst risk. The data also suggest that, within the scope of this study. the greatest risk of injury occurs when a pocket of heightened rock burst risk is first encountered and that this risk is controlled when miners adapt their practices to these conditions. Recognition of the role of particular geologic features in the spatial distribution of rock burst hazards provides an opportunity for anticipating, rather than only reacting to, a changing level of rock burst hazard- However, much work will he required to make good on this promise.

The Bureau of Mines tested a prototype tapered-element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) dust monitor for measuring respirable coal mine dust. The monitor uses the inertial behavior of a vibrating element to measure the mass of sampled dust. Tests were performed to determine variability, drift, the effect of humidity, placement of collection filter, and element orientation during analysis, and comparability with gravimetric measurements of respirable coal dust. Variability was about 1.6 µg. Over about 26 h at 46 pct relative humidity, drift was very slightly negative. When the relative humidity was increased to 78 pct, all units showed a total positive change less then 40 µg over about 70h. Filter placement variation on the tapered element resulting from in- consistent sizing of the filter mounting bases caused significant error (up to 0.2 mg). In practice, calibration of the system for each new filter will eliminate that error. Orientation of the element during analysis did not introduce significant error, but care is necessary when mounting the canister that houses the element to avoid damping oscillation of the element. Dust tests were performed in an aerosol chamber using coal dust. Measurements made by the TEOM dust monitor agreed to within 10 pct of simultaneous measurements by gravimetric personal samplers.

A GaC12--B2 l-eachtng procedure and meEal-recovery method for treating an arsenical Cu-Co sulfide concentrate was developed by the Bureau of Mines as an alternative to smelting, which is no longer considered an environmentally acceptable method for treating arsenic-containing ores. The procedure involved leaching in a CaC12 solution with CaC03 for 96 h at 26 pct solids (concentrate and CaC03), 1150 C, and a pressure of 50 psig (345 kPa) with oxygen. More than 98 pct of the cobalt and 97 pct of the copper were extracted, and 99.98 pct of the arsenic and 99.9 pct of the iron remained in the leached residue. A filtration rate of 2.9 gal/(ft2.h) [118 L/(m2.h)] and a cake formation rate of 36 Ib/(ft2.h) [172 kg/(m2.h)] were obtained by filtering reacted pulp at 1000 C. More than 99 pct of the copper in the pregnant solution was extracted as CuCl2 by golvent extraction with a new copper extractant. Copper was stripped from the loaded organic with a sulfate-chloride solution, which was used as the anolyte for electrowinning of copper in a membrane cell. Copper plate produced was more than 99.99 pct pure and requi.red 0.81 (kW'h)/lb Cu [1.78 (kW·h)/kg Cu]. Cobalt sulfide was precipitated at pH 3 with Ca(HS)2.

Several evaluations were made by Modified Rhyme Test (MRT) word lists transmitted through various simulations of the Trapped-Miner Communication System being developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The tests were performed in a "single blind? situation so that the evaluators would not be biased by knowing the characteristics of the system being simulated. A computer program was developed to provide a simulation of the electrical aspects of the communication system and to provide an evaluation by calculation of the articulation index (AI). The study indicates that communication through the presently proposed system will be somewhat unreliable at depths as great as 300 metre even with the system operating at maximum effeciency.

According to Lindgren , the economic importance of pegmatites stems from the fact that they represent the principal natural storehouse of two classes of mineral products : (1 ) common minerals in exceptional size and purity and ( 2 ) several of the rarest minerals , which are not commercially available from other types of deposits . Most pegmatites can be described simply as coarse- to very coarsegrained granites . Pegmatite includes coarse -textured igneous rocks of any composition , such as syenitic , alkali syenitic , dioritic , or gabbroitic ; but basic pegmatites are far less common than those that are associated with acid rocks and correspond approximately to the mineral composition of ordinary granite . Moreover , only a very few basic pegmatites can be considered as economic sources of useful minerals . Whereas , in ordinary granitic rocks the individual minerals usually measure 1/8 to 1/4 inch across , in pegmatites they are characteristically over 1 inch and often more than 12 inches in diameter . Although some of the constituents of the pegmatite may be only a fraction of an inch in length , single crystals more than 10 feet long are by no means unusual , and some crystals are enormous . A whole quarry was operated in the Urals within a single crystal of feldspar . Huge quartz crystals are quite common although usually imperfect . Muscovite plates 10 feet in diameter have been mined in India , and the Purdy mica mine in Canada contained a mica crystal measuring 6.5 by 9.5 feet and weighing nearly 7 tons , which supplied more than $20,000 worth of trimmed mica sheet . A loglike crystal of spodumene in the Etta mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota was 42 feet long . Giant crystals of beryl weighing several tons apiece have been mined from several properties . Because so many rare minerals are found in substantial concentration only in pegmatites , it is a common fallacy to suppose that pegmatites are always enriched in rare elements . Traces of most of these elements , of course , are found in almost all igneous rocks , and they reappear in the sediments derived from igneous rocks . It does not follow , however , that all or even most pegmatites contain higher percentages of rare elements than other granitic rocks . Geological evidence points to the probability that notable concentrations of rarer minerals or elements in pegmatites are more or less fortuituous , such additions often being ascribed to events subsequent to the original emplacement of the main body of the pegmatite . Most pegmatites consist principally of potash , feldspar , and quartz . Even mica , although commonly present , is not an essential constituent . Probably

[The Sectional Committee on Classification of Coals, functioning under the sponsorship of the American Society for Testing Materials and the rules of the American Standards Association, in its 1934 report recommended to the American Society for Testing-Materials that Specifications for Classification of Coals by Rank be adopted as tentative. These specifications, slightly modified as recommended by the Sectional Committee, in its 1935 report,6 wore approved as tentative standards by the society in 1935. The specifications rover the classification of coals according; to their degree of metamorphism, or progressive alteration, in the natural eerie s from lignite to anthracite. The basic scheme of classification is according to fired carbon and calorific value (expressed in B.t.u.) calculated to the mineral-matter-free basis. The higher-rank coals are classified according to fixed carbon on the dry basis, and the lower-rank coals according to B.t.u. on the moist basis, that is, containing its natural bed moisture but free of visible surface moisture. Uranium mill tailings represent a potential threat to the human habitat by containing large amounts of radioactive and chemically toxic substances in high concentrations. These: undesired components enter the human habitat in various pathways such as by erosion and water or air transport. The main objective of this investigation was to evaluate the actual movement and model the potential movement of contaminants by seepage of water from the tailings into the subtailings soil. This report represents various models of the movement of contaminants using both theoretical approaches and empirical evaluation of data available from other investigations. The data consist of field measurements and laboratory determi¬nations of major and trace cations, the dominant anions, pH, and Eh of moist solids, extracts, and waters from the tailings and surroundings. Evaluation and interpre¬tation of data were accomplished by using Eh-pH diagrams, various statistical methods and the WATEQFC computer program. Data analyses show that the critical area of investigating movement- is the interfaces between tailings and the external environment. The chemical differences at interfaces seem to result in a sink system for contaminants. The tailings-soil¬-water system shows extreme complexities because of chemical and physical hetero¬geneity of the system preventing the use of a single comprehensive model to represent real conditions. The validity of the simplifying assumption used has been shown and increasing complexity has been built into the models. Analogs of these models can be used for evaluation of similar systems.
