"INTRODUCTION Knowledge of the Phase relations of fluids produced from combination wells 4/ at the pressures and temperatures characteristic of production from natural reservoirs is essential to efficient recovery and refining practice. An accurate sample of the fluid from such wells may be prepared by mixing (in the proportions of the measured gas:liquid ratio) gas and liquid taken from the separator conditions of steady flow; and physical properties of the sample, at significant pressures and temperatures, may be determined with suitable laboratory apparatus for use in the solution of engineering problems. The results of study of sample so obtained and of mixtures of gas and liquid from the separator combined in other proportions are presented in this report. Attention was given in the study to the relationship between the physical properties of what may be regarded as the constituent materials - the gas and liquid taken from the separator - and the properties of mixtures of these constituents. Data obtained for the complete range of mixture Proportions are expected to provide a reference scale for the study of other combination-well fluids produced at different liquid:gas ratios."

Operator efficiency and control capability along with cost effectiveness have been the quest of mining, industrial, and mobile hydraulic engineers for years. The majority of the functions in present day fluid power systems are controlled by on/off control valves. They are inexpensive and provide easy installation and operation, but they lack the quality of fine control of load flow or what is sometimes known as "feathering the load". An alternate approach to obtaining this capability is the use of electro-hydraulic servo-valves, but their implementation into a system is complex, and they are expensive. As a result, electrohydraulic systems are still used primarily in the aerospace industry. Of late, a compromise seems to have evolved between the on/ off control systems and the servo-technology is the so-called proportional flow control valves. A proportional flow control valve meters fluid to the load in proportion to the input command from the operator. In principle, it is similar to a conventional flow control valve and is tailored to meet the control requirements from the load point of view. The hydraulic system using this valve usually works in an open-loop mode with the operator closing the loop. Incorporating load-sensing mechanisms and adoption of electrical/electronic signalling into the valve make it the "ideal valve" which designers have been looking for from a techno-economic point of view.

In 1984, personnel from the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined 41,550 acres of the North Fork Owyhee River Wilderness Study Area for mineral resources. This study area, in southwestern Idaho, is underlain by tuffs and basalt of Tertiary age. There are no known mines, claims, or prospects in or near the area. The northeast and southwest corners of the area are covered by oil and gas leases or lease applications, but no known exploration has been conducted. On Nickel Creek and Pleasant Valley Tables, in the southern part of the area, thin flows of vesicular, moss-covered basalt occur that are suitable for use as decorative building stone. The stone available for exploitation crops out over several square miles. However, more suitable material, outside the study area, is closer to potential markets.

Includes a review of the state-of-the-art of explosives loading in the crushed stone and cement industries of South Florida and the development of a field test program for alternatives. Emphasis is on the loading of small diameter (2 1/4" or less) explosives. Test results ire evaluated for operational and economic feasibility. Details are described of an explosives loading method which involves placing cardboard tubes with external couplings through the hollow drill steel and then Loading explosives into the tube casings after the drill rig has moved off. This method eliminates the hazards peculiar to loading explosives Through the kelly bar. The alternative method can be performed by existing drill rigs with or without minor modification. With modification, improvement in yield per blasthole and/or primary crushing rate provides opportunity so offset some or all of the additional cost.

Bahrain's oil revenue increased from $337 million2 in 1916 to $378 million in 1977. Despite the increase in value, petroleum receipts made up only 584 of all Government income in 1877, compared with 74% in 1976 and 83% in 1975. Bahrain became an oil producer in 1932 with the discovery of the Awali oilfield, and since that time, the Awali oilfield has produced over 600 million barrels of crude oil. Awali production in 1977 was 21.2 million barrels. Bahrain shares the revenue from the Abu Safah oilfield, located in the Persian Gulf north of Bahrain, equally with Saudi Arabia. Revenue from the Abu Safah oilfield was approximately $179 million or 47% of oil revenues in 1977. Output from the Abu Safah oilfield was 48 million barrels, an increase of nearly 30% over 1976 output. The Bahrain Petroleum Company (BAPCO). the nation's only oil-producing company, was owned 40% by California Texas Oil Corp. (CALTEX and 60% by the Govern¬ment. The Government established Bahrain National Oil Co. (BANOCO) in 1976 to administer the Government's share of BAPCO, oversee exploration concessions, and manage domestic marketing of petroleum products. The Government announced its intention to acquire 100% control of crude oil and natural gas production. CALTEX was to retain complete control of the 250,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery near Sitrah.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey are responsible for the evaluation of the mineral resources and potential of further planning areas included in the U.S. Forest Service Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) program. The Bureau of Mines primarily evaluates mineral deposits and prospects within the areas. The Geological Survey naps the area's geology and conducts geochemical sampling. Evaluations are in conformance with the Forest and Rangeland Renewable Resources Planning Act of 1974 as amended by the National Forest Management Act of 1976. The Hauser RARE II area, which consists of 7,600 acres (3,100 ha) within the Cleveland National Forest, is in southern San Diego County, California. The area, which forms the north slope of Hauser Canyon, ranges between 1,600 and 3,919 ft (490 m) in elevation. It is sparsely to densely covered with desert shrubs. The area is underlain by granitic rocks of the Peninsular Ranges batholith.

"INTRODUCTION This is the fourth report of investigations dealing with the cooperative tests between the Bureau of Mines and industry on the use of electrolytic manganese in steelmaking. The first report dealt with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of stainless steel 3/ the second with its use in acid electric steel practice, 4/ and the third with its use in low-carbon basic open-hearth steelmaking. 2/ A résumé of those investigations E7 appeared in the magazine STEEL. 5/ The present report deals with the use of electrolytic manganese in the manufacture of four types of stainless steel and the new Timken 16-25-6 alloy. The Bureau of Mines supplied The Timken Roller Bearing Co. with 62,000 pounds of electrolytic manganese for use in the tests.The electrolytic manganese was produced at the Bureau of Mines pilot plant, Boulder City, Nev., by the process developed by the Bureau and described in Bulletin 463, Operation of Electrolytic Manganese Pilot Plant, Boulder City, Nev., by J. H. Jacobs. J. W. Hunter, W. H. Yarroll, P. E. Churchward, R. G. Knickerbocker, R. W. Lewis, H.A. Heller, and J. H. Linck. The workcarried out under the direction of R. S. Dean, formerly assistant director, Bureau of Mines, and R. G. Knickerbocker, formerly chief, metallurgical branch, as part of a long-range program involving the development, manufacture, and use of manganese from domestic ores. Under the Heavy Metals Program, investigations were conducted at the old Badger dill placer mini in Nevada County California to collect data and information regarding drilling and sampling methods and deposit characteristics. The studies contributed to a team effort by five Bureau of Mines research groups to develop new or improved placer mining technology in the Tertiary gold-bearing channel gravel of northern California. This report describes the techniques used and the results obtained in the sampling and drilling stage of deposit delineation studies that were conducted by the Denver Mine Systems Engineering Group. Sampling included the collection and processing of 400 tons of largo and small volume samples from drill holes, underground workings, surface pits, and blast hole rounds. A total of 355 samples averaging 2,296 pounds per sample provided reasonably accurate data for analysis of the gold distribution. These studies indicate that the bulk of the gold is within 40 foot of bedrock in stacked, lenticular zones of cemented gravel that are largely confined to the relatively narrow, meandering course of the deepest portion of the bedrock channel. Drilling studies involved the testing of three types of truck-mounted drills including rotary, bucket and vibratory, none of which proved to be a completely versatile tool for sampling quickly and reliably both consolidated and unconsolidated gravel.

The Bureau of Mines has undertaken investigations to examine selected deposits of beryllium throughout the United States. The beryllium deposit about 6 miles southeast of Lone Pine in the Owens Valley region of Inyo County, Calif., was among those selected for study. In 1960, field work was conducted on the Inyo Beryl claim to determine the extent and character of the beryl-bearing deposit. This report describes the work that was done. In the area investigated, the beryl occurs disseminated in granite and limestone and as stringers. Apparently, the stringers are related to nearby pegmatite dikes, inasmuch as some appear to contain fine-Grained pegmatite. Granitic rocks enclose most of the stringers, which occur as fracture fillings, ranging from thin seams to 4 inches in thickness. The stringers are of muscovite, quartz, albite, and beryl. Some also include epidote and fluorite. For the most part, they are widely spaced. Therefore, mining of substantial tonnages averaging better than 0.2 percent beryl does not appear feasible.

This report summarizes the work performed and results achieved on the above contract from October 18, 1971 through July 14, 1972 under Phase II, Task 1: Detailed Design of Prototype and Task 3: Supporting Experimental Investigation. Operation and Service Manuals resulting from Task 3 are submitted under separate cover as are detailed design drawings and specifications, prepared under Task 1. Both items accompany this report. This report also includes (A) an estimate of the cost of construction, (B) a description covering the use of the equipment, and (C) a proposed test plan to demonstrate performance of the equipment in both the laboratory and a mine.

This paper is the result of a comparative study of ultimate coal analyses made and published by the United States Geological Survey. This study, at first casually undertaken to devise an acceptable classification of coals based on chemical analyses, was continued in connection with a microscopic examination of a number of the coals. The initial comparisons, made from a relatively small number of analyses, not only confirmed a previous conviction that the elimina- tion of oxygen incident to the development of a coal is economically far more important than has been generally suspected, but also showed that oxygen is very nearly as harmful as ash in coal. The immediate purposes of the present study were: (a) To deter- mine more definitely, from a comparative examination of a large number of ultimate analyses, the relative importance of oxygen as an impurity in various coals; (b) to illustrate the transition between various grades of coal of similar origin-transition mainly due to progressive devolatilization, brought about more or less directly by dynamic influences; (c) to ascertain the relative proportions of oxygen, hydrogen, and carbon in coking coals, especially with refer- ence to a theory tentatively framed to explain the coking quality; and (d) to forecast the probabilities of successfully treating a large number of coals so as to render them amenable, in a softened condition, to satisfactory study under the microscope. Although the hypothesis as to coking quality finds but partial support in the chemical analyses, its consideration has led to a method of predicting from an analysis with a fair degree of certainty whether any given coal will coke by the ordinary process. The unbroken transition between coals originally similar but now classed in widely different groups, whether of the same age or of different ages, as a result of dynamochemical action, appears demonstrated by the analyses as well as by field observation. This report is volume 10 of an eleven-volume final report for a Grant completed by The Pennsylvania State University for the Bureau of Mines to develop a dynamic general purpose computer simulation model for underground coal mining. The simulator developed under the Grant has a wide range of possible applications in the design and evaluation of underground coal mining systems from the standpoints of health and safety, productivity, and mine environment. The Master Design Simulator consists of nine free-standing function-oriented subsystem models linked together into an integrated, comprehensive model of an entire mining system. The subsystems comprising the Master Design Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation, and ventilation. This volume of the final report describes the Ventilation subsystem of the Master Design Simulator. The Ventilation subsystem has the capabilities to handle: (1) branches in parallel or series, (2) fans in parallel or series, (3) multiple fans, (4) methane, compressed air, or other injections into the system, (5) leakages and fixed quantities, and (6) calculations of absolute pressure at nodes. The program uses the Kirchoff's Junction and mesh laws, and the Hardy-Cross iterative technique to converge to the desired accuracy in solving fox the head quantity. A case study is included in the report illustrating the use of the model. The appendices of the report constitute a user's manual for the Ventilation subsystem, and include a program listing.

This study assesses whether Narragansett Basin coal deposits could be developed commercially in the near future. To do this, we identify the potential market for the coal, assess the price these users would be willing to pay for Narragansett coal, and this price to the expected costs of producing Narragansett coal. The study concludes that the major market, New England utilities, could burn bituminous coal from Pennsylvania or West Virginia at a lower total cost than Narragansett Basin coal, assuming expected mining conditions and emission policies. Therefore, the study concludes that Narragansett Basin coal resources could not be developed economically in the next ten years.

The mining industry of Cameroon continued to be dominated by crude petroleum. Crude petroleum production has become the most important facet of Cameroon's economic development. Oil production was estimated to be 6.3 million tons in 1983 compared with 5.2 million tons in 1982 and 4.3 million tons in 1981. Over two-thirds of its export income was attributed to crude oil. The country's only refinery, dedicated in 1981, has a production capacity of 2 million tons. Cameroon has become self- sufficient in petroleum products since commissioning the refinery. The oil sector contributed approximately 13.5% to Cameroon's gross domestic product in 1982-83. Oil production was expected to rise from 125,000 barrels per day in 1983 to 156,000 barrels per day in 1985 when output peaks. Cameroon's ultimate recoverable reserves have been calculated at 100 million tons, or 750 million barrels of oil.

Much has been written of the changes undergone by coal in storage and the deterioration of coal through exposure to the weather. In order to obtain definite information for the benefit of the Government departments and of all who store coal in large quantities, a series of tests was begun in the fall of 1909 under the supervision of J. A. Holmes, then chief technologist of the United States Geological Survey, and was continued by the Bureau of Mines after its establishment in 1910. The tests were confined to determinations of the loss in heating value of the coals and did not include a study of other deterioration; for example, in coking quality or the yield of by-products in coking. The Bureau of Yards and Docks of the Navy Department cooperated in tests of New River (W. Va.) coal, a variety largely used by the Navy. A preliminary report presenting a brief account of the early results of these tests has been published by the Bureau of Mines as Technical Paper 16.a The detailed report is presented in this bulletin, which gives a full account of the tests and the analytical data covering a period of five years' storage. Data of somewhat similar experiments for shorter periods with gas coal from the Pittsburgh bed, with Pocahontas coal on the Isthmus of Panama, and with Sheridan, Wyo., subbituminous coal, which is used for railroad and other purposes in the West, are included.

A symposium was held on January 30 and 31, 1973, at Pittsburgh, Pa., to review the state-of-the-art in designing and utilizing diesel-powered equipment in underground mining. The Health and Safety Activity of the Bureau of Mines sponsored the symposium with major assistance from the following four participating organizations: The American Mining Congress J. McDowell, President The Bituminous Coal Operators' Association, Inc. Guy Farmer, President Seventeen papers were presented during four half-day sessions devoted to the general subjects of the diesel engine, the place of the diesel in underground mining, health protection using diesels underground, and maintaining safety of diesels underground. Eleven of the speakers were from industrial organizations here and abroad; one represented the Provincial Government of Nova Scotia; two were with the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare; and three reported on Bureau of Mines work related to diesels.

This document is a users manual intended as a reference for personnel interested in the analysis of coal-mine-electrical-power systems under either normal operating conditions or fault situations. The interactive procedures developed for this purpose are described and implementation considerations are discussed with respect to the mine-power system. Considerations for choosing a solution technique and a number of examples are included. Procedures available include Gauss-Seidel and Newton-Raphson iterative techniques for the analysis of normal operation or balanced faults as well as a non-iterative Z-bus technique for analysis of unbalanced or balanced faults.
